Abstract:
Background: The objective of the study was to find out the knowledge of career counselling among High School Students in Pakistan, their attitude towards attaining this knowledge and role of counsellors in order to get the right decision. Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted from October to November 2016in two private institutes of Karachi. It included 500 students enrolled in a single high school for A-level and intermediate study program for session year 2016-2017. A Structured questionnaire was developed and adapted from previous studies. Data entry and analysis was done using SPSS 20. Frequencies, percentages, and P-values were reported for the categorical variables, while mean and standard deviation for Age. The variables were cross tabulated against Knowledge to find out their associations. A P-value of 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: Out of 500 respondents, 54% were females. Most of the students were in the age group of 17-19 years. Most of the students took Science as a major subject, while many declared it was their first attempt for higher school examination. 32.6% students had an aim of becoming Engineer while 29.8% wanted to be doctors. Most of these made this choice based on their personal interest. 54.8% of students had knowledge of career counselling. On applying chi square tests, availability of career counsellor and seminar attendance was found to be significantly associated with knowledge. Many of the students found counselling to be very important and they believed that there is a need of counsellor in every school. Most of them found their parents to be the most helpful in choosing their career. Conclusions: It is concluded that most high school students possess appropriate knowledge, positive attitude but lack of proper practices. Students consider career counselling to be really important and they are really concerned in acquiring appropriate guidance. Parents seemed to play an influential role in their choices. It is evident that very few schools provide with career counselling session and there is no concept of presence of career counsellors in any school of Pakistan.

Abstract:
The study aimed to establish teacher counsellors’ views on the factors impacting the implementation of guidance and counselling services in the Ohangwena region of Namibia. The study was quantitative in nature and used a non experimental design that involved a survey. The population of the study comprised of teacher counsellors in all senior secondary schools in Ohangwena region. Data were collected using questionnaires which were administered to a sample of twenty six (26) teacher counsellors. Teacher counsellors were purposively sampled. The data was analysed by use of descriptive statistics using The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Based on the findings of this study teacher counsellors viewed inadequate training, high teaching loads and time constraints, lack of support given to teacher counsellors and lack of resources and facilities as key factors impacting the successful implementation ofschool guidance and counselling. It was thus recommended that the training of teacher counsellors in school guidance and counselling be improved, reduced workload for teacher counsellors, better resources and facilities for guidance and counselling, and for teacher counsellors to be supported in order for guidance and counselling to be successfully implemented in schools.

Abstract:
This paper reports findings from a qualitative study conducted with public high school students and guidance counsellors in the north eastern United States of America to examine how class cutting is understood and addressed. Our findings indicate that interactions between students and guidance counsellors are similar to negotiations. These negotiations, however, are implicit rather than explicit. Explicit negotiations offer guidance counsellors a valuable tool for collaboratively exploring cutting with all relevant parties, including students, teachers, administrators, and parents. Explicit negotiations can examine underlying issues and conflicts precipitating cutting, the social meaning that cutting has for this student, desired outcomes, impediments to these outcomes, and the negotiation process itself. Not only can explicit negotiations aid guidance counsellors learning about and responding to cutting more effectively, but they also can model effective, collaborative problem solving for students and the larger school community.

Abstract:
Having a deep multicultural perception is a must for school counsellors who serve students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Describing their perception of the importance of multicultural guidance and counselling is the main objective of this study. Fifty middle and high school counsellors participated in this study. Data of their perception were collected by administering a 10-item questionnaire in an online version which requires them to respond on a scale of 1-10, ranging from not important to important, encompassing cognitive, affective, and practice dimensions. The main findings of this study revealed that school counsellors have similar perceptions on the importance of multicultural guidance and counselling either in cognitive, affective, or practice dimensions, according to demographic data categories of gender, age, and years of experience. The significant difference is only found as they are categorized into middle and high school counsellors.

The Internet has revolutionised communication around the globe, and Australia is no exception (Goodheart & Crawford, 1995). At this stage, only a few school guidance counsellors are fortunate enough to be able to “surf the Net”, although this is rapidly changing, with some Australian schools already connected and others about to join up shortly. The pace of change is rapid indeed, with developments like EdNA and OpenNet offering further possibilities. Those who do “get wired” will know just how deep a source of riches this can be. The purpose of this article is to outline some of the relevant discussion groups of interest to counsellors.

Abstract:
The Guidance Teacher or counsellor is someone who is responsible for providing guidance and counselling in schools consciously towards the development of student's personalities and abilities both from physical and spiritual aspects so that students are able to live independently and fulfil their various developmental tasks as creatures of God in addition to individual beings and social, moral, religious, and cultural beings. Counselling is an effort to help individuals through a process of personal interaction between counsellors and counsellors so that counsellors are able to understand themselves and their environment, be able to make decisions, and determine goals based on the values they believe in so that counsellor feels happy and effective in his behaviour. Guidance Counselling is in a key position in an educational institution, namely a school institution, as a support for the progress or retreat of the quality of education. The role of guidance and counselling in improving the quality of education is not only limited to academic guidance but also personal, social, intellectual, and value-giving guidance.

Abstract:
The study examines career guidance services provided by school counsellors in secondary schools in Kano state. The study used 387 sample respondents drawn through purposive sampling from randomly selected schools. Questionnaire instrument with satisfactory psychometric properties was employed in data collection process. The results show that school counsellors assist students to identify their strength, abilities and learning style, help students to make appropriate career pathway selection, set educational and career goals, search for information about careers and work choices. However, school counsellors underperform in helping students to make future educational planning, college selection and placement. Moreover, no significant difference was found among gender excepts in educational Planning, college selection and placement with female students having better educational planning, college selection and placement. It is concluded that the school counsellors play greatly in the area of career decision making, goal setting and personal awareness. However, it is recommended that school counsellors should improve services involving future educational planning, college selection and placement.

Abstract:
School guidance counsellors worldwide seek ways of providing appropriate professional assistance to all students. While young people integrate online technology into their daily lives and go online for information and to communicate with each other, school counsellors in Australia are not offering online support to students. This cross-sectional study reported on the reluctance of school counsellors to offer online counselling and the reasons for this. A survey was developed focusing on the intention to offer online counselling based on indicative factors favouring the use of this initiative. 210 school guidance counsellors completed the survey online, which showed that there is conditional support for the introduction of online counselling into the school setting. Counsellors indicated that they would use online counselling if students accepted its use in the school setting though they question how genuine students would be in its use. Most respondents reported a lack of confidence in understanding the ethical and legal implications of online counselling. However, the majority of participants were prepared to undertake further professional development in this mode of counselling. Additionally, they sought confirmation of the effectiveness of counselling students online before committing themselves to it. The implications for school guidance practice are discussed.

Abstract:
The main objective of this study was to evaluate the counselling and appraisal services in the Colleges of Education in the Volta Region of Ghana. The research design used for the study was the survey approach. Four hundred research participants made up of 317 students, 80 tutors and three counsellors were selected from three Colleges of Education in the Volta Region through stratified and purposive sampling procedures. Stratified sampling technique was used to select the students and tutors while the counsellors were selected purposively. Data were collected with questionnaire and analysed using frequencies and percentages. The results revealed that teacher trainees were not benefiting fully from both the counselling and appraisal services. Some of the recommendations made were that counsellors should intensify guidance activities in the colleges so as to make guidance services, especially the counselling and appraisal services more attractive and accessible to students. In addition, college authorities should play a supervisory role to ensure that counsellors organise guidance activities in the key service areas on periodic bases, just like other co-curricular activities such as sports.

Abstract:
Unlike some other Western countries, most Scottish schools do not have full-time guidance teachers or school counsellors. In secondary schools, guidance teachers teach and provide educational, vocational and personal guidance, but are not trained as counsellors. Both the McCrone Report (Scottish Executive, 2001a) that focuses on teachers, workload and stress, and the McConnell Report (Scottish Executive, 2001b) that focuses on discipline and support for students, open up new possibilities for this wide-ranging role that has changed little since it was established in 1968. The article analyses these recent policies and some recent Scottish research to argue in favour of introducing full-time guidance teachers/school counsellors into Scottish schools to meet both student and teacher needs. A model of specialised and professionalised school counselling as exists in most New Zealand secondary schools is presented as a possible direction as Scotland reviews existing systems and addresses barriers to learning, social inclusion and student discipline.

Abstract:
AbstractThe increasing tendency of immigration and forced migration practices around the world has made countries’ populations culturally and linguistically diverse. Australia is considered one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Consequently, the proportion of school-aged children with different culture and language is also increasing. Thus, school psychologists and guidance counsellors face the challenge of designing fair assessment practices and sound interventions for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) students who experience difficulties with their learning. Although many multicultural countries have extensive research regarding the assessment of learning difficulties in CALD students, Australia lacks this research. This study explored the most common assessment strategies that school psychologists and guidance counsellors usually implement in their assessment of CALD students. These results were then compared to a best practice model from the literature. In order to understand the current practices of school psychologists and counsellors in Australia who have assessed CALD children, a survey was administered to 34 school psychologists and counsellors. It was found that the reported strategies and protocols were very close to the ones proposed by experts, which was an unexpected outcome of this study. Implications for school psychologists and counsellors are discussed.

Abstract:
The research was about the compassion fatigue and its contributing factors in guidance counsellors. The sample for the study was 92 guidance counsellors. This study explored factors of compassion fatigue, work-related factors, personality traits and demographic factors utilising the following instruments: professional quality of life scale (ProQOLs), NEO PI-R and demographic questionnaire. The context for the study was different schools in Central Luzon – Region 3, Philippines. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression stepwise method were utilised in the study. Findings indicated that participants had low levels of burnout and low levels of secondary trauma stress as elements of compassion fatigue. Personality traits of the participants identified include low levels of neuroticism, average levels of extraversion, average levels of openness to experience, high level of agreeableness and high levels of conscientiousness. Multiple regression stepwise method confirmed that the personality traits neuroticism, extraversion and agreeableness predict burnout with a variability of 40%. Likewise, salary as work-related factor also predicts burnout with a variability of 4.7%. Similarly, personality trait neuroticism is confirmed to predict secondary trauma stress with a variability of 21.9%. Based on the two elements of compassion fatigue, neuroticism was found out to be the best predictor among the personality traits. Keywords: burnout; compassion fatigue; guidance counsellors; secondary traumatic stress;

Abstract:
This study investigated the strategies for enhancing guidance and counselling services in an effort to mitigate psychosocial distress in Tanzanian Universities. The study adopted a qualitative approach. Multistage and purposive sampling techniques were used to select the study participants. Two universities, two counsellors and two Deans of Students were purposively selected while eighteen students, nine from each university were sampled on the willingness basis for group discussion across the faculties. Data was collected using focus group discussion and interview schedule. For content validity, the inter-raters established the viability of the instruments in view of the research question. Reliability was ensured through multiple data collection instruments. Data was analyzed thematically. The study established that peer counselling programs were not formalized in universities in Tanzania. It can also be concluded that students were not informed about the availability and benefits of guidance and counselling services available in universities and the guidance and counselling departments were underfunded by the universities. Moreover, the counsellors were not professionally trained in counselling. The study recommended that Universities should employ professional counsellors, adequately fund the guidance and counselling services for efficient services. Besides, orientation programs should include informing new students about available guidance and counselling services on campuses.

Abstract:
During consecutive terms as President of the Queensland Guidance and Counselling Association, the first author routinely made public addresses where the survival and promotion of the Counselling profession was explored. Following such speeches, Guidance Counsellors would typically tell stories about the poor regard with which their role was held within their system and asked what they could do to increase their identity, profile and status. The second author, in eighteen years as a Guidance Officer in a different state, also came to learn that embedded within such interactions and questions were anxieties about job security and concerns about the public perception of the relative professional value of our role. It would be possible to write a paper that reflected that gloom, but we decided it would be timely and more useful to consider what could be done to increase the likelihood of professional survival. In addition to the climate existing in the world of Guidance, we are aware of the advent of Nurse Counsellors, Behaviour Teachers, Pastoral Carers, Home-School Liaison Officers, School-based Police, Chaplains and Welfare Workers within the education context. It has been the placement of these additional personnel within schools which has added to the unease of Guidance Counsellors, with what many believe is usurping some of the their role.

The school counselling profession has challenges in pandemic or post-Covid-19 pandemic conditions for self-development and alleviation of student problems. Current conditions limit all access to learning as well as GC-S (GC-S). The social media utilization becomes an alternative supporting GC-S. The goal of this research is to evaluate the use of social media by school counsellors to support GC-S in schools. Mix-method research with sequential transformative design through quantitative data backed by qualitative data. The research targets were 90 students and three school counsellors with questionnaires and interviews. Analysis of questionnaire data was quantitative with standard deviation and percentage, and then interview data was descriptive qualitative. The result of the study is that school counsellors have used social media to support GC-S with good categories. School counsellors use two primary social media, namely WhatsApp and YouTube, because of the access and convenience for students, although not all students can interact, discuss, and participate actively. Counsellors need to be more active and creative during a pandemic or post-Covid-19 pandemic in GC-S with various technologies in GC-S.

Abstract:
This study aimed at determining the extent of traumatic incidents in schools in Queensland, the extent to which guidance counsellors and schools have been adequately trained to respond effectively to traumatic incidents, and if there were any differences in incidence and preparation on the basis of geographic region or school system. Of the 81 guidance counsellors (51 women, 30 men) who completed a questionnaire specifically designed for this study, only 14% reported having no experience with a traumatic incident. Group (urban, rural, private, and university) and experience in guidance also demonstrated significant effects on exposure to particular traumatic incidents. Respondents provided substantial qualitative information which may be used in establishing and/or reviewing a school's traumatic incident management plan including a guide to the training needs for guidance and other key personnel in a school.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected almost every area of our lives. It meant a break from our lifestyles, transforming everything from face-to-face to online. Among the places where this situation has become more evident are primary schools, secondary schools, and universities, which have had to adopt online teaching in its entirety. Faced with this situation, the work of the educational counsellors was essential to coordinate the centre with the families and to enable students to follow the classes in the best way possible. The objective of this study is to analyse the scientific literature about online educational guidance, with a focus on the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve this, a scoping review inspired by the PRISMA model was done. A total of 42 articles were studied. The main results show that many counsellors were at a disadvantage and in a very stressful situation, as they did not have the necessary digital training. On the other hand, this situation has been the first contact for many counsellors with the use of ICT within their profession and in an unexpected situation, without time for training or enough preparation.

Abstract:
This study sought to assess the effects of practice of guidance and counselling appraisal/assessment services on learners’ discipline in primary schools in Mbeere South Sub County, Kenya. Survey research design was employed in the study. The population was 162 headteachers, 162 teacher counsellors, 4563 class eight pupils. The sample was 48 headteachers, 48 teacher counsellors and 376 pupils. Data for the study was collected by use of questionnaires. Data was analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics which included frequencies and percentages and also means and standard deviation. Data was presented by use of frequency distribution tables (FDT). Findings revealed that teachers did not employ important guidance and counselling services such as assisting pupils minimize frustrations in life, assisting pupils balance academic work and recreation, assisting pupils realize their fullest potential in school, they also did not make referral cases on pupils with severe challenges. Findings also revealed that teacher counsellors did not provide appraisal/assessment services on learners. The study concluded that teacher counsellors did not employ the required guidance and counselling practices which could be a cause for indiscipline cases in the schools. It was also concluded that schools did not have appropriate appraisal/assessment services to enhance discipline among the pupils. Among the recommendations that the study came out with included a replication of a similar study in an urban setting. It was also recommended that a study on parental upbringing and its influence on learner discipline may be carried out. Lastly there was a recommendation of a study to establish how integration of guidance and counselling has influenced curriculum implementation in schools.

Abstract:
This study investigates how school counsellor’s demographics influence the provision of guidance services in senior high schools in Ghana. The study was underpinned by a positivist philosophical viewpoint where a quantitative approach and the descriptive survey was used to assess how school counsellor’s demographics influence their provision of guidance services. A self-developed questionnaire was used to collect data from respondents. A total of a hundred and thirty-six (136) respondents was selected on a purposive base. The study found out that there was a significant difference between the age, gender, experience and academic qualification of counsellors have an influence in the provision of guidance services in SHSs in Ghana. The study also revealed that orientation, information and counselling services were adequately performed in SHSs, but consultation and follow-up were the least provided services. The study recommended that the Ministry of Education should ensure that the employment criteria for school counsellors should be based mostly on academic qualification and experience. Finally, the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service should organise seminars for school counsellors frequently to have rudimentary knowledge and skills to help them in practice.

Abstract:
Sandplay therapy is a technique that is a potentially valuable tool for guidance counsellors working in the context of challenging school environments. It is particularly suited to work with children and adolescents as it provides unique and developmentally appropriate opportunities for them to engage in the therapeutic process. In fact, as it is play-based and developmentally appropriate, sandplay may be a useful adjunct for the mainly cognitive and behavioural techniques most commonly used by school guidance counsellors. It provides a multiple intelligences perspective and may meet the specific needs of children with particular cognitive and socioemotional difficulties more effectively than the traditional ‘talking’ therapies.

This paper reviews consultation between school guidance counsellors and teachers and parents from a self-system psychological perspective. From this perspective factors, such as self-serving bias, self-enhancement, self-verification, sense of control, and stress coping strategies all impact on the consultation process. The paper addresses the challenge of understanding and minimising the negative ramifications of the self-system factors and suggests strategies that can help build a positive professional relationship. The paper explores the interactions between the self-system variables and behaviour so that guidance and school counsellors are in a better position to monitor their interactions and work more effectively with a range of consultees.

Supervision is a mechanism for providing support for school counsellors, and peer group supervision has been found to be beneficial. Indeed, supervision is most often conducted in face-to-face interactions. However, advances in technology have opened up new possibilities for supervision via use of the Internet. The present study evaluates a structured peer group supervision program conducted for school counsellors using email. The findings indicate that email can be an effective medium through which to conduct supervision and that the use of a structured peer group supervision process is helpful.

The enormous amount of work carried out in their workplaces gives rise to many documents, materials or resources of great interest to other guidance counsellors and a range of other professionals. However, because of the lack of communication and exchange channels among professionals, these materials are underused. The Guidance and Vocational Counselling Wiki fills this gap in the form of a collaborative hypertext environment, accessible through the Internet, in which all guidance counsellors and vocational advisers can share ideas, find useful material and resources for their work, and actively participate by adding and editing present and future content.

Abstract:
The study investigated on the parental guidance skills and students' discipline management in secondary schools in Kapchorwa district. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to help us better understand the experiences of teacher counsellors on the guidance skills expected of parents in the management of students' discipline in secondary schools. Four informants were purposively selected from four out of the six government aided secondary schools in Kapchorwa District and data was collected via interviews and analysed based on the perspectives of the teacher counsellors on the parental guidance skills and their management of discipline of students. The following conclusions were derived; There was less teamwork between the school administrations and the parents in the management of students' discipline, the parents gave little audience to their children which made them not to express their issues freely and openly, there is a poor parent-child relationship on matters regarding indiscipline, the parents lack adequate knowledge on the growth and development changes that children go through at different stages of development, and the parents lack adequate guidance skills necessary for the management of students' discipline. It was recommended that; parents should work in collaboration with school counsellors and teachers so as to reduce on the number of indiscipline cases in secondary schools, they should improve on their relationships with their children through establishment of good rapport, and that the school administrators should organise workshops and seminars geared towards educating parents on various issues affecting students.

Abstract:
The dual role of teaching and professional counselling practice is a common trend in Nigerian school system. Much research has not been conducted on the impact of this dual role on school counsellors’ efficiency and performance. The study investigated the impact of dual role of teaching and practice on counsellors’ productivity in Ilorin, Nigeria. A mixed method approach was employed on a sample of 149 school counsellors in Ilorin metropolis, Nigeria using the snow ball sampling. A scale tagged “Impact of Dual Role on Counsellors’ Productivity” was used to gather quantitative data from 149 school counsellors while an interview was further conducted to gather qualitative data from 10 school counsellors. The quantitative data obtained were analyzed using percentage, mean and ranking order analysis, t-test and ANOVA while the qualitative data was coded and narrated thematically. The findings revealed that dual role negatively affects the counsellors’ effective communication with the client; competence in handling client issues; prompt follow- up of client cases and having time to study client cases among others. Counsellors also hold the opinion that dual role affects proper record keeping, efficient organisation of guidance programme, proper follow-up of client cases among others. The study also found that the perception of respondents on influence of dual role varies based on length of year in service but they share similar views based on gender. The study concluded that dual role affects counsellors’ efficient service delivery in the school system.

Abstract:
Background: Counselling services play a crucial role in catering clients of integrated counseling and testing centers (ICTCs). The counsellors provide information, education regarding HIV testing and treatment, guidance and support to the clients in taking informed decisions. The counsellors pose challenges due to the burden of client’s number and decreased self-satisfaction in the job. The objective was to assess the job satisfaction of counsellors providing HIV counseling services at ICTCs of Delhi. Methods: The study was cross sectional, conducted in Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers. The study was conducted in 20 selected ICTCs of Delhi. Selection of ICTCs was on the basis of population proportion to size of clients catered. All the counsellors in the selected ICTCs were invited to take part in the study. The interview of the counsellors was completed by maximum of 3 visits. A pretested, structured questionnaire with five point likert scale for satisfaction was used. Chi square test was applied. P value of<0.05 was significant. Results: In 20 ICTCs, a total of 32 counsellors participated in the study. Among 32 counsellors, 14 (43.8%) were males and 18 (56.2%) were females. Majority (93.7%) of counsellors said that refresher counselling training was very useful. Most of the counsellors, 22 (68.7%) suggested that strengthening the collaboration with non-government organizations would increase the number of direct walk-in clients. Majority of the counsellors, 26 (81.2%) said that they were satisfied with the job. However, 19 (59.3) counsellors said that they would change the profession if given a choice. Conclusions: Periodical salary revisions and further career growth in counselling domain, could improve the job satisfaction and would help the counsellors retain the job. This would cut down the additional expenses of the programme for imparting induction training often-times.

Abstract:
This article examines the implications of a new school counselling policy, namely, ‘one school social worker for each school’, for the professional identity of school counsellors and guidance and counselling services in Hong Kong primary schools. This paper reviews primary school counselling development since the 1970s with a focus on workforce planning. As a result, it identifies two themes: (1) counselling workforce planning has gradually shifted from purely government-led to more school-based planning, and (2) school counsellors with master’s-level counselling training qualifications are not adequately recognized in primary school settings. Making school counsellors visible to school principals, the Education Bureau and the public before the full implementation of the new policy in 2021/2022 is critical. The strategic positions of counsellor educators and counselling associations that are central to the advancement of the professional identity of school counsellors are discussed.

Clinical supervision of counsellors is linked to accountable practice and the quality of service to clients. Despite this, there is a gap between the rhetoric of the literature and the practice of clinical supervision. This study, set in the context of the Queensland Department of Education, examined the perceptions of guidance officers and senior guidance officers about the clinical supervision provided for guidance officers by senior guidance officers in relation to their counselling practices. The findings echo concerns expressed in the literature that supervisors have received little training in supervision, and the provision of supervision outside of training settings is less than adequate.

Abstract:
The role of Guidance and Counselling in making informed choices among learners cannot be overemphasized. Although institutional-based Guidance and Counselling was introduced in Kenya to equip learners with the skills of making informed decisions so as to reduce risky sexual behaviours and teenage pregnancies. The numbers of teenage pregnancies are on the rise in Siaya County especially Ugenya Sub County in Kenya. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of peer counselling in management of teenage pregnancy among girls. The study utilized a Concurrent Triangulation Design within the Mixed Method Approach. Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy theory informed the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample 15 Principals and 15 Teacher Counsellors. Kerlinger formula was employed to determine and select 347 teenage girls in Form 2 and 3 to participate in the study, while 50 Peer Counsellors were selected to participate in the study using stratified random sampling. Data for the study was collected using questionnaires, structured interview schedules and Focus Group Discussions. Data collected from the questionnaires was edited, coded and analyzed through descriptive statistics as well as Pearson Correlation analysis using SPSS version 23. Thematic Analysis was used to analyse qualitative data. The findings indicated that there was a strong and positive correlation (r = .675) between peer counselling and the management of teenage pregnancy at p < 0.05. The Ministry of Education should emphasize more diverse training of Guidance and Counselling teachers on varied therapies for them to be effective in schools. In addition, the policy makers in education should also come up with various training programs meant for peer counsellors to assist in therapy programmes in their respective secondary schools, since students preferred seeking counselling services from their peer counsellors.

Abstract:
Self-employment is an important employment option for people with disabilities. It provides flexibility, the ability to work non-traditional hours and to address issues associated with an illness or disability. It particularly addresses accessibility, communication, or transportation barriers for people with disabilities. It is especially useful in rural areas where there are few employers and consequently few employment opportunities. But self-employment is not for everyone, not every business idea is sensible, and not every proposed business is feasible. Rehabilitation agencies and counsellors that work with people with disabilities wishing to start a business usually are operating in unfamiliar territory. For the most part, rehabilitation counsellors are counsellors, not business developers. This article presents a process developed to assist rehabilitation agencies and counsellors to work with a client who wants to start a business. The process was developed after extensive research with rehabilitation agencies and counsellors who indicated they would be more willing to work with a client to start a business if they had guidance from their agency. The following process addresses that need by blending rehabilitation agency policies and procedures with best practice for developing a business.

Abstract:
The Australian construction industry is highly reliant on the local labour force and those employed within it undertake a wide variety of roles ranging from labouring to management. In the past 20 years construction has seen record levels of employment; however lack of skilled labour is becoming problematic. Australia, like most industrialised countries, has an ageing population due to falling birth rates, increased life expectancy and the ageing of the large post-World War II ‘baby boom’ generation. Deciding on a career is one of the most fundamental activities in a young person’s life and the role of the school career counsellor is crucial in this process. This research examined secondary school career counsellor’s knowledge of construction, their perceptions of it as a good career choice and how often they directed male and female students to investigate construction as a career. Comparisons using paired t-tests found career counsellors perceived construction to be a better career option for young men, and directed them more frequently than women, to explore construction careers. The findings also indicate that an educative model, where students and counsellors gain firsthand knowledge from people working in the industry, may counter negative gender stereotypes associated with this area of work and encourage more young people, both male and female, to consider a career in the construction industry.
