Nam, Hye Yeon. "Interactive installations as performance." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/52241.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis clarifies the interdisciplinary field of interactive installations in digital media and digital art. As an interdisciplinary field, interactive installations emphasize three dimension; bodily interaction beyond restricted mouse clicking; physical interfaces using digital technologies that can reconfigure a space; particular forms of participants' engagement. To investigate these interactive installation artifacts in greater detail, this thesis adapts a theoretical perspective from performance studies using epistemic, critical, and constitutive qualities to investigate interactive installations as performance. First, epistemic qualities explore how embodied interactions prompt participants' engagement. Second, critical qualities encourage participants to ask questions and explore issues. Lastly, constitutive qualities address how participants actuate new configurations by interacting with installations. This thesis applies the epistemic, critical, and constitutive aspects and its theoretical discourse to interactive installations. With two works, Please Smile (2012) and Hooray (2013), it probes these effects in an additional user study of both works. Using the quantitative and qualitative results of a questionnaire and participant interviews, it also analyzes how participants engage with Please Smile and Hooray and respond both emotionally and physically.

Full text
Abstract:
The Unsettled Object is an installational art project that considers the instability of objects in regards to their assembly, classification, and presentation, underpinned by the context of the museum and supported by Michel Foucault’s notion of the classificatory grids he discusses in The Order of Things: an archaeology of the Human Sciences. (Foucault,1970) The artefacts are being fabricated as a response to the corporeal body-on-display; its surfaces, spaces and volumes. An underlying notion of temporality and mutability is indicated in the processes of making, the objects, material responsiveness and the devices employed in the presentation of the work.

Shaffer, Michael J. "Dan Graham's Video-Installations of the 1970s." VCU Scholars Compass, 2010. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/56.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the video-installations created by American artist Dan Graham in the 1970s. It investigates the artist's relationship to Minimalism by analyzing themes Graham highlights in his own writings and in interviews. In particular, I explore how the artist's understanding of Herbert Marcuse, Walter Benjamin, and R.D. Laing informed his post-Minimalist work and how concepts gleaned from these sources are manifest in his video-installations. Also undertaken are discussions of the artist's interest in aestheticized play, the just-past present, the debate between Behaviourism and phenomenology, surveillance, and Modern architecture. In addition, I investigate Graham's position in Conceptual art, use of site-specificity, and the practice of institutional critique. At the outset, I provide an in-depth analysis of two of Graham's magazine pieces, Schema (March 1966) and Homes For America, that ties together the artist's reading of Marcuse and his rejection of Minimalist phenomenology. Next, I give an account of the artist's connection to early video art and his use of time-delay in works such as Present Continuous Past(s) and Two Viewing Rooms as a means to highlight the just-past present. Finally, I examine Graham's architectural video-installations Yesterday/Today, Video Piece for Showcase Windows in a Shopping Arcade, and Video Piece for Two Glass Office Buildings as instances of site-specific art and as part of the artist's practice of institutional critique. I also explore his references to the notions of art-as-window and art-as-mirror as an expansion of his engagement with Minimalism. Throughout, my discussion includes comparisons between Graham's work and that of other artists like Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman, and Hans Haacke. In sum, this study offers an expanded understanding of how Graham employed video and installation in his art as a means to move beyond Minimalism and to interrogate contemporary American society.

Skriver, Jan. "Emergency decision making on offshore installations." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.265383.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to examine the cognitive processes through which experienced Offshore Installation Managers (OIMs) make decisions during emergencies, and to determine whether they use a naturalistic or normative decision making strategy. That is, do they recognise the emergency as familiar and base decisions on condition-action rules serially generated (naturalistic), or do they need to concurrently compare and contrast options before selecting the best possible (normative). Emphasis was on the individual OIM's understanding of an emergency and the meaning he attached to the information or events taking place. The method employed to achieve this objective, was a Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) based on triangulation principles, i.e. using multiple methods to examine the same research question and so enhance reliability and validity. The main findings of this thesis were: • Decision making in Safety Case (1992) identified offshore installation emergencies is primarily based on condition-action rules, or rule-based according to Rasmussen's (1983) model, not Standard Operating Procedures. • Decisions are serially generated. There is no evidence of option comparison. • The environment severely limits the number of options available to the OIM. • Decisions are predominantly made when one element of the present status of the incident changes. • Tactical decisions account for approximately 54% and operational decisions for 46% of the decisions made. • Nearly 50% of the decisions taken are instigated by other team members. • The majority of the time (86.8%) is spent on situation assessment. • The OIMs' situation awareness is limited to a maximum of eight interdependent problem categories. • Situation awareness comprises approximately four categories at any one point. • Risk and time pressure are the two major factors contributing to incident assessment. • There are individual differences in decision making style and situation awareness.

Abstract:
In this report decommissioning of offshore petroleum platforms have been investigated. It treats decommissioning in general, the process of a typical project. A variety of suitable lifting vessels have been presented, and some concepts of removal have been evaluated. Decommissioning is important to go through with because of the environment and the use of the area after the petroleum activities ceases. Other ocean users benefit from the decommissioning because the area can be utilized when it is opened for ordinary traffic. The environment will benefit from the cessation of production because of fewer spills to sea or risk of it and being restored to a state as close to possible to original. Sometimes it is found acceptable to leave facilities behind, partially or wholly, and the marine life in the area can actually benefit from this in some cases. A decommissioning project consists of the elements planning and approval, topside and jacket preparatory work, topside removal, jacket removal, transport, and onshore dismantling and recycling. There are two main concepts of removal, reverse installation and single lift. The elements of the project are the same whichever of the concepts are used. The vessels to be used need large lifting capacities in either concept. Especially designs that lift topsides and jacket in single lifts can improve the efficiency in the projects. Several lifting vessels have been presented and a few concepts were reviewed regarding future requirements. The concepts were platform removal using only a traditional HLV, topside removal using HLV and jacket removal using buoyancy tanks, and removal using the new lifting vessel design Pieter Schelte. It is found that all the concepts can remove fixed platforms, but Pieter Schelte was especially well-suited. When Pieter Schelte is used, personnel will be exposed to less risk because more work is done onshore. Onshore work is in general more inexpensive, faster, cleaner, and safer. This gives a better HSE profile to the project as well as being more cost-efficient. On the downside, the vessel is not available before 2013. In the meantime the alternative with the HLV and buoyancy tanks can gain some more experience. This alternative scored the same as removal with reverse installation and is therefore not so successful in this comparison. There are however uncertainties involved and the solution with the buoyancy tanks are still interesting. The challenges in decommissioning are to make it less expensive, less time-consuming, and safer than today as well as keeping the environmental issues satisfactory. This can probably be reached by making the process more standardised to some extent, making use of new technologies like new vessels, doing less work at the offshore site, carrying out less lifts offshore, and do a lot of the dismantling work onshore. Pieter Schelte can to a great extent be the solution to these challenges.

Abstract:
Today Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB (SIT AB) installs operator-stations manually. This is a tedious and time consuming process. In this report several different approaches is researched and presented for an automated solution. Because automated installation is not a widely researched area, an exploration of different approaches and technical difficulties has  been made to use as a base when finally arriving at a recommendation for SIT AB. The result of this report shows that an approach using the Windows Registry is the best solution for implementation of an automated solution, and that other approaches either is too time consuming or technically challenging to be feasible. This report is meant as a decision basis for SIT AB in their automation of operator-station installations.

Abstract:
Utilization of photovoltaic (PV) cells to generate electricity from solar energy is becoming an increasingly popular source of renewable energy in this era of energy transitions. Adoption of ingenious techniques to increase PV systems’ performance and with the arrival of data analytics for efficient management of energy systems, an opportunity of using statistical models to develop mechanisms for performance evaluation of distributed Solar PV systems is present. Therefore, making use of available data and various statistical techniques, two models for performance evaluation of solar installations were developed. First model estimated PV Power outputs using neighboring PV panels whereas the second model estimated Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) using AC PV power outputs. The aim of these modules was to serve as the basis for fault detection and solar forecasting, respectively. With solar forecasting information available insight of future energy production and assistance in smart grid solutions could be carried out. Furthermore, with anomaly detection mechanism in place one can highlight energy reductions in the systems. Sensitivity analysis for PV nowcasting methodology was carried out to optimize characteristics of the model. Increase in the number of neighbors did not have any significant effect, whereas large radius was required for clear sky days and shorter radius were needed for cloudy conditions to cater the rapid change in weather conditions. Overall, nowcasting methodology resulted in Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of less than 5%. GHI Estimation model was benchmarked with Nespoli, et al. (2017) method and compared with satellite data also. Results for GHI Estimation Model were comparable to Nespoli et al. (2017) method and better than satellite data. Overall, for test sites under the supervision of CheckWatt AB, MAPE of less than 10% was observed and the results were significantly better than SMHI STRANG estimates which had MAPE of 46%. Sensitivity Analysis of number days for estimation of GHI was carried out and use of 120 days for estimation of GHI was found to give the minimum MAPE. GHI Estimation Model was also used to generate solar map where variation in GHI of 5 sites within Stockholm county was portrayed. These two modules combined serve towards performance monitoring of PV installations.

Moukoko, Serge Rock. "Le plein contentieux spécial des installations classées." Thesis, Metz, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009METZ003D/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The full special dispute on closed plants is qualified by the special doctrine. Indeed it is special, more than the mere idea, on accounts of particularisms that it shows up in relation to the common law's dispute. That special side is firstly due to the variety of deadlines about the dispute appeal, which change either according to the applicant, the plant's aspect in matter or the beginning of setting up. This special point is also due to the exceptionnal competences vested in the judge, whenever he pleads for the special dispute, whose implementationis first conditioned by a decree. Not only can he abrogate (annihilate / repeal) the decree, but he can also behave as an administrator. He can play the prefect's part and act in places taking the decrees into the jurisdictional setting. Out of sheen reason, this domain lies within the administrator's exclusive province. besides, the rules of the law implementable by the judge varies according to given aspects. He must incite to the procedure rules implementation which comes into effect the very day when the decree is treatened. As for the deep rules, the judge should appreciate their equality when the jurisdictional decision is drawn. Some of its particularisms are justified on particularly historical accounts. However these cannot be justified nowadays any longer, because of the public law's evolution and the recent principles of process law guaranteed to the justicees by an european and a community judge, such as the legal security principle, the equal opportunity principle, the right to the justice court, the right to a non-dependant (free) judge. All the aforementioned specificities enable the commont law's dispute to take over the full special dispute, which tends to come up forth as by a history reserve

Abstract:
Several major nuclear accidents have shown the dangerousness of the civilian nuclear industry. In law, the IAEA's efforts have been, since the beginning, to develop nuclear safety. The objective is to ensure the operation of the facilities in good conditions. Security which aims to protect facilities against malicious acts is more recent. Police and security forces in general are in charge of protecting the facilities against criminal threats. If fixed installations are the best identified part of the problem, the circulation of radioactive sources in the world is the weak point of the industrial device. Increasingly complex regulations must be assessed according to a simple reality: police forces are not better protected than the rest of the population in the event of a major accident. This observation requires to deploy significant resources in the area of prevention and planning. The massive effects of a radiological emergency do not recognize the borders of states. The international dimension of this threat is indisputable. Police forces prepare evacuation plans for the population. But deadly invisible radiation constitutes a challenge for their implementation. In fact, the evacuations carried out in recent years have all presented significant differences compared to the forecasts. It is not a theoretical reflection on the law and the facts. In the future prospect of a terrorist attack on a power station, the safety response means have become essential to the survival of modern societies

Abstract:
During the recent years the popularity of solar power have increased tremendously. With the increased interest in solar power comes a development of more efficient and different types of technology to harvest the sun rays. Monofacial panels have been on the market for a long time and have rather developed simulation models. The bifacial technology on the other hand have been researched for years but just recently found its way to the market. Simulation models for the bifacial panels are continuously being developed and they are a key aspect to increase the knowledge about the bifacial technology. Most of the research that has been conducted until today is mainly about the bifacial gain, not about the bifacial simulation models. The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate and validate simulation models of bifacial solar panels in PVsyst with comparisons to measured data from six different bifacial installations in Sweden. The installations had different system configurations and varied in: tilt, azimuth, pitch, elevation, number of rows and albedo. Furthermore, the installation configuration parameters were analyzed to see how they affect the bifacial system and what an optimal configuration would be for a bifacial installation in Sweden. The results show that the main difficulties for an accurate simulation model is to determine the proper input data. The irradiance and albedo proved to be the most difficult parameters to determine. The irradiance was accurate looking at yearly level but already during monthly distribution the error is taking effect. One of the reasons for the errors is the difficulties to determine the diffuse irradiance fraction of the light, especially during cloudy days. The albedo was found to have a linear dependency on the yield, which meant that it is possible that the inaccuracy of the model are solely dependent on albedo. For tilted installations without optimizers the yearly error of the simulation ranged between -5,2% to +3,9% where the lower limit value is suspected to be caused by a wrong albedo value. For a tilted installation with optimizers the error was +9,1%. This could be caused by two reasons; the optimizers are even more dependent on the irradiance or that the software exaggerates the benefits of optimizers. The simulations of vertical installations had an error between -5,4% to -3% and are more accurate than the tilted simulations.Different parameters effect on the specific yield were studied using a simplified simulation model and stepwise change of each parameter. The results were that four of the six studied parameters have no characteristic change on each other and the optimal conditions was to maximize the pitch, elevation and albedo and minimize the number of rows. The remaining two parameters tilt and azimuth showed a dependence on the other parameters, where the optimal azimuth only was affected by tilt while the optimum tilt was affected by all the other parameters. This revelation lead to the conclusion that tilt is the most suitable parameter for optimization of installations because of its dependence on ambient conditions. The optimum tilt was found for the studied cases and in five of the six cases it would have an increased specific yield if the tilt was optimized. Note that for four of those five would lead to an increase of less than 0,5% while for the fifth an increase by 14,2%.

Abstract:
I am a painter with a huge attachment to objects. In this painting project I aim to make objects whose objecthood is formed by the collision of the different languages of both painting and sculpture – objects that negotiate the boundary line between traditional genre divisions. These objects react to one another, where an aspect of one suggests the next, so that they develop like an epidemic. And therefore this project functions in an accumulative way, where each work or body of work acts as a stepping-stone for the next, so that the objects descend from a common ancestor and have a common origin. The project is primarily installational in nature – in the sense that, although emphasis is put on the individual objects, they are viewed together in installations, not as separate entities. I aim to consider installation in terms of the language of painting, which constitutes the formal underpinning of my practice.

Abstract:
In 2001 when this research commenced, there was little understanding in Saudi Arabia of the opportunities digital art could provide for artists, how it could be integrated with or used instead of painting, and the effects the enlarged vocabulary could have in communicating difficult social issues. As a result, this study aimed at filling a gap in knowledge through reviewing contemporary Saudi art. This, in turn, helped me to understand the position of my practice. The study also aimed at developing a means of expression in which traditional art can be combined with digital media and showing how this combination provides a new direction for Saudi art by raising awareness in Saudi Arabia about complex issues. In addition, the study aimed at determining the acceptability of this new form of art to artistically literate Saudi artists through gathering audience’s reactions to the developed artefacts. This study comprised of several stages: discovering the state of art in Saudi Arabia and where it fits into the global stage; documenting my journey as an artist and understanding my practice; the creation of the installation and its reception, all of which was documented in a reflective journal. Through reflecting on my practice, I transformed my work from simple traditional pieces of art to more complex installations concerning everyday gender politics. I interviewed 20 practicing artists, noting that the majority of their work used traditional forms of art rather than digital art. A week-long exhibition on gender differences in Saudi Arabia was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The feedback from the exhibition showed that, although there is not a strong appreciation of digital art in Saudi Arabia, the audience was able to understand the different components of the installations and the underlying issues being portrayed. They were able to bring their own experiences to the situation and reflected on the installations accordingly. The study contributes to knowledge by providing a review of contemporary Saudi Artists as there is no significant literature that documents this in Saudi Arabia. It also contributes to knowledge by exploring and developing artefacts that incorporate different technologies and by showing that digital media and traditional art can be used together to articulate complex social issues arising in everyday Saudi life. Finally, it fills a gap in knowledge of how Saudi audiences engage with works that use a combination of traditional and new art to express such issues.

Energy managers are faced with the challenge of upgrading their installation microgrids in a tight fiscal environment, while meeting the challenges of incorporating higher percentages of renewable energy sources and providing better energy assurance during commercial grid failures. Incorporating renewable sources of energy into a microgrid is challenging due to the intermittent nature of supply. Using historical solar data and simulated forecasts for wind data, we formulate and exercise a capital planning optimization model designed to choose the best subset of existing and potential energy sources to maximize microgrid islanding time. Islanding time is defined as the amount of time demands can be met without connection to the commercial power grid, and it is one measure of an installation’s power resiliency. Using sensitivity analysis, we show quantitatively how increases in the capital planning budget has a direct positive impact on islanding time. However, the model also identifies areas where large increases in budget yield proportionally smaller returns in islanding time. Additionally, energy storage can provide increases in islanding time, but there are diminishing returns as the storage capacity is increased. Finally, we quantitatively show that increasing reliance on renewable power decreases sensitivity to changes in the price of fuel.

The US Army has set a course to transition to a future force that is adaptive, modern, and at the forefront of change. This strategic vision lacks a refined installation strategy to meet the needs of the future force. In a period of troop reductions, declining budgets, and increased facility vacancy rates the Army is required to shrink its installations. This thesis explores how to shrink Army installations through change, policy, and design. A set of changes is proposed that focus on eliminating housing, revising security standards, increasing privatization, and growth in Enhanced Use Leasing. Current Army planning strategies based on New Urbanist principles do not address how to shrink installations. Four theories are analyzed to develop a framework for designing the future of Army installations. Parameters are established to test the results of the design. The framework is applied to develop a design proposal for Fort Belvoir, VA. The framework generated a successful design of Fort Belvoir, VA based on the establish parameters. The framework and design process is transferable to all Army installations in the United States. Army planners can apply the process and framework as a tool to generate solutions to shrink Army installations.

The purpose of this study is to investigate and design public light art installations. The investigation consisted of evaluating select examples of public light installations in order to develop a typology, and designing two site-specific light art installations: one in Wichita, Kansas, and the other, in Denver, Colorado. Though public light art is found in most cities, its potential is often lost or unrecognized. In certain cases, public light art can be ‘plop art,’ which is plopped senselessly without much regard to context or experiential qualities. This project seeks to explore the different types of public light art and to find what approach or qualities should be considered when designing public light art. My approach can be described as artistic research. The methods include an apprenticeship to an artist, a precedent study, development of a light typology, an analysis of site and context, establishing a design matrix for two design projects, and an iterative process of making. Each of these methods were undertaken in order to effectively address my research question: What type of public light art is most appropriate for a specific site and how does it relate to creative placemaking? This project overlaps with a collective project group entitled Creative Place-Making, which is comprised of other fifth-year master of landscape architecture students with an underlying interest in art and design as place-making tools. Each student in the group addressed the site in Wichita, Kansas in a unique way. I addressed this site as a temporary landscape, creating an interactive light installation intended to be in place up to five years. In contrast, I addressed the Denver, Colorado site as a long term landscape, and designed a sculptural illuminating gateway. Each of these light art installations were informed by a particular set of characteristics that make each design site-specific.

Abstract:
The PMU has been found to carry great deal of value for applications in the wide area monitoring of power systems. Historically, deployment of these devices has been limited by the prohibitive cost of the device itself. Therefore, the objective of the conventional optimal PMU placement problem is to find the minimum number devices, which if carefully placed throughout the network, either maximize observability or completely observe subject to different constraints. Now due to improved technology and digital relays serving a dual use as relay & PMU, the cost of the PMU device itself is not the largest portion of the deployment cost, but rather the substation installation. In a recently completed large-scale deployment of PMUs on the EHV network, Virginia Electric & Power Company (VEPCO) has found this to be so. The assumption then becomes that if construction work is done in a substation, enough PMU devices will be placed such that everything at that substation is measured. This thesis presents a technique proposed to minimize the number of substation installations thus indirectly minimizing the synchrophasor deployment costs. Also presented is a brief history of the PMU and its applications along with the conventional Optimal PMU placement problem and the scope for expanding this work.

Abstract:
As offshore installations in the North Sea near the end of their economically viable life they will be decommissioned. There is limited experience of decommissioning the structures in the Northern North Sea. When decommissioning is being considered studies are undertaken to assess each option on such criteria as: environmental impact, technical feasibility, cost, health and safety and public acceptability. This thesis aims to explore the contribution that economics can make to the debate surrounding decommissioning with the introduction of a cost benefit analysis framework within which to compare each decommissioning option. Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) considers the economic costs and benefits from any change in resource allocation within an economy. This would provide a structured assessment of all the impacts of decommissioning in monetary terms. CBA also allows social desirability to be considered. The CBA framework involves valuing costs and benefits. Whilst estimating costs raises important questions, the identification, measurement and valuation of (dis)benefits represents one the greatest challenges facing economists. This thesis will focus on how economics can be applied to this problem to obtain monetary valuations of the benefits of decommissioning. Two methods of valuing the (dis)benefits of decommissioning are considered - Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) and Discrete Choice Experiments (DCE). These are applied to valuing of one impact of decommissioning (drill cuttings) and the value of alternative decommissioning policies. As well as addressing the issue of decommissioning, these experiments also consider methodological issues in the application of CVM (dealing with Don't Know and Protest responses) and DCE (testing for compensatory decision making). Following this the costs of decommissioning are estimated using an existing financial simulation model developed for oil industry use. Recommendations are made for policy and future methodological work.

Abstract:
This thesis is a written commentary accompanying a portfolio of original compositions and interactive installations that are composed primarily of environmental sound. The portfolio confronts many themes that, together, work to recontextualise environmental sound. These themes include: varying context in sound by stimulating multiple listening modes simultaneously in the quest for a deeper understanding of environmental sound; personification of environmental sound musically, thus embodying performative aspects of environmental sounds through music; accentuating the connection between subjectivity in listening and memory association. suggesting that music has the ability to allow the listener to venture on a unique and personal journey, relative to associative memory. There are six fixed medium compositions in the portfolio. These are The Listening House, The Watering Hole, Passage of the Masses, Port of Call. Magnetoception: A Geomagnetic Flight and Filtered & Blended. There are also three interactive installations: Auragate, Zettajoules and Camera Obscura Quietus. The works in the portfolio constantly shift environmental context and consequently perception of such sounds. This changing of perception can lead either to the personification, objectification or expunction of certain soundscape relationships through composition. All of which help to reveal sound in new light, thus giving new context and a higher level of understanding of the soundscape and the sounds therein.

Dhimish, Mahmoud. "Fault detection and performance analysis of photovoltaic installations." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2018. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34576/.

Full text
Abstract:
The cumulative global photovoltaic (PV) capacity has been growing exponentially around the world, especially due to the installation of grid connected photovoltaic (GCPV) plants. Fault detection and analysis are important for the efficiency, reliability and safety of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Even This thesis reports the results of the research work conducted to invent novel fault detection algorithms and evaluate their deployment in multiple existing PV installation, and empirically validate their performance. A major contribution of this thesis is the development of PV fault detection algorithms based on two indicators named power ratio (PR) and voltage ratio (VR). Both ratios are used to identify the type of the fault that occurs in the PV modules, in PV string, and/or in maximum power point tracking (MPPT) unit. Three AI based algorithms were also used to detect faults in PV modules. The first algorithm uses six regions of the power and voltage ratio in order to detect faults in PV systems. The average detection accuracy for the algorithm is equal to 94.74%. However, Mamdani Fuzzy Logic system has been used to enhance the occurrence of fault detection in the PV installations which resulted in an increase to 99.12%. The second proposed PV fault detection algorithm detects defective bypass diodes in PV modules using Mamdani Fuzzy Logic. Whereas, a third PV detection algorithm is based on artificial neural networks (ANN) networks. Four different ANN models have been modelled, which can be classified as follows: - 2 inputs, 5 outputs using 1 hidden layer - 2 inputs, 5 outputs using 2 hidden layers - 2 inputs, 9 outputs using 1 hidden layer - 2 inputs, 9 outputs using 2 hidden layers The output results for the last ANN network had the highest overall fault detection accuracy of 92.1%. In this thesis, the development of two hot spot mitigation techniques used in PV modules will be discussed. These techniques are capable of enhancing the output power of PV modules which are affected by hot spots and partial shading conditions. The detection of hot spots was captured using i5 FLIR thermal imaging camera. Finally the thesis describes the impact of PV micro cracks on the output power of PV modules. A new statistical analysis approach using T-test and F-test was used to identify the significance impact of the cracks on the output power performance of the PV modules. This is developed using LabVIEW software.

Dsouza, Serena Karen. "Asset management of offshore oil and gas installations." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/49282/.

Full text
Abstract:
The UK sector of the North Sea is a mature oil and gas basin subjected to some of the harshest offshore environments with a majority of the oil and gas installations approaching or having exceeded their original design life, often specified as 25 years. It is likely that the operation of these installations will continue for a substantial period in the foreseeable future. However, the ageing nature of these installations present significant challenges to the delivery of high standards of health and safety required by the UK Health and Safety Executive. The issue of ageing installations has been shown to be an important factor in offshore incidents and accidents, leading to an increased risk of accidental loss of hydrocarbon and failures due to equipment deterioration. Two major hazards resulting from ignition of accidental hydrocarbon release are fires and explosions. Failure to minimise the effects of fires and explosions can bring about significant damage to the structural integrity of offshore installations and pose a risk to personnel safety as evidenced by the 1988 Piper Alpha Disaster and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Explosion and Oil Spill. This thesis presents a practical tool that can be used to predict the costs, risks and service reliability of any given asset management policy for an offshore oil and gas installation. The tool is implemented using a standard Petri Net technique with already adopted and newly proposed high level extensions, and fluid flow modelling technique. The tool is further divided into two sub models that work in conjunction with one another: (1) the Petri Net based Offshore Safety System Degradation and Maintenance Model and (2) the Offshore Fire and Explosion Model based on fluid flow modelling techniques. The aim of the Offshore Safety System Degradation and Maintenance Model is to concurrently simulate the degradation, failure, inspection and maintenance of four safety systems which includes the fire and gas detection system, process isolation, process blowdown, and the deluge system. Simulation of the model generates a variety of statistics such as the estimated operational costs and unavailability associated with implementing any given asset management policy. The Offshore Fire and Explosion Model is then used to model the occurrence of a hydrocarbon leak from a process vessel located within three enclosed modules; wellhead, separation and compression, of an offshore installation. The aim of this model is to predict the frequencies of fires and explosions in the event that the safety systems previously modelled in the Offshore Safety System Degradation and Maintenance Model fail to function on demand in the presence of an ignition source. The model utilises fluid flow modelling to calculate parameters such as the hydrocarbon discharge rate, gas cloud build-up and dispersion, oil-pool build-up and reduction. These parameters can then be used to predict the magnitude of the fires and explosions in terms of the flame length produced in the event of a fire and the overpressures generated in the event of an explosion. The results and statistics generated are highly beneficial to offshore asset operations managers as they can be used to predict the number of maintenance interventions necessary to ensure safety systems are in an acceptable condition. From this, associated costs can be determined enabling offshore managers to allocate resources and budget accordingly. Finally, an optimisation study is carried out using Genetic Algorithm to identify the optimum inspection, maintenance and repair strategy for the offshore safety systems with an acceptable risk level. The methodology presented in this research considers the offshore safety systems and the processes described above in more detail compared to previous literature associated with asset management offshore oil and gas installation. Additionally, the research demonstrates the suitability of Petri Nets for integrating fire and explosion modelling within the asset management framework which is first of its kind. The model can be successfully used to predict costs, risks and service reliability, and to support asset management decisions when the model is implemented in an optimisation framework.

Abstract:

Examensarbetet delades upp i fyra olika faser.

This project is a comparative analysis of the implementation process of Activity Based Cost Management of Marine Corps Logistics Base, (MCLB), Albany, and the implementation procedures used aboard MCB Camp Lejeune. Interviews and data gathering were conducted to identify how the respective Business Performance Offices (BPO), plan, implement, monitor, and measure performance of their process to introduce ABCM at the base installation level. We studied the means by which the two organizations allocated resources to this change process and their cost objects. An analysis of benchmarking goals as well as relative barriers to the implementation was conducted to find commonalities between the two, or to determine if those goals and barriers were unique to each organization. It should be highlighted that this project is not intended to identify which, if either, process is superior or if inherent problems or impediments are attributable to internal issues within the respective organizations. The project describes and discusses environmental differences that facilitate or hinder the implementation and offers recommendations to aid in ABCM implementation process procedures.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Interactive placemaking offers many new opportunities for the consideration and design of urban place, particularly through offering engagement with the creativity and experiences of local populations. This thesis explores the recent area of interactive placemaking from analytical and creative perspectives in developing a framework for both describing behaviours and producing design guidelines. The thesis begins by drawing together and building on existing work in HCI and Design to provide an initial framework for the analysis of interactive place. The framework combines theoretical and practical threads to look at two central questions: how do people behave in interactive places, and how do we design such interactive places? The assumption underlying the thesis is that users' behaviours in public spaces can be observed, abstracted, and formalised to the extent that designers can use in designing and evaluating interactive public installations. In observational studies of four interactive installations the thesis progressively develops the original framework so that it is usable, accessible and understandable by designers. The thesis then goes on to evaluate how twenty design students used the framework to realise a number of public interactive installations in the city of Chicago. The thesis concludes by combining insights from existing research and insights from the studies conducted to present a comprehensive and robust framework structure. The main contribution of the thesis is thus a new generative and evaluative framework for interactive placemaking.

Abstract:
Fem huvudproblem identifieras i processen.
This thesis is a project that is conducted at Infinera located at Stockholm, Sweden. The project uses service design methodology alongside with user-centered design. The aim of the project isto examine and improve every day work lives of implementers of fiber optic networks. The current service is following a system-driven perspective. This project will examine ways to change this into a user-centered design perspective. Service design methods were used to investigate the service process and to gather insights. The project started with an initial preparation phase, followed by loop 1 and 2. Preparation phase was used to get a deeper understanding on fiber optic networks. Loop 1 and loop 2 included methods such as shadowing, a day in life, interviews and customer journey maps. These loop phases included interactions with the customers, the analysis of these interactions, ideation from these analysis and conceptualization. Five main problems were identified in the process. These were grouped into two as process related problems and user experience related problems. It is found out that the main reason behind process problems was lack of communication between departments in the company. These problems were project manager designation, lack of statement of work and the handover between sales department and technicians. The handover between sales department and technicians were selected as a next step to go on. Web applications were shaped as a concept to solve the problem that was selected. The project was finalized with suggestions on webapplications regarding the solutions of selected problems. The problems were identified related to the process. Sales to service handover was selected for further improvements. The generated concept on this problem was improved and presented to the company.

Loughney, S. J. "Asset integrity case development for normally unattended offshore installations." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2018. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/7990/.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes the initial stages of the development of a NUI – Asset Integrity Case (Normally Unattended Installation). An NUI – Asset Integrity Case will enable the user to determine the impact of deficiencies in asset integrity and demonstrate that integrity is being managed. A key driver for improved asset integrity monitoring is centred on the level of accurate reporting of incidents. This stems from incidents to key offshore systems and areas. For example, gas turbine driven generators where 22% of fuel gas leaks were undetected with 60% of these 22% having been found to have ignited. Accordingly, there is a need for dynamic risk assessment and improved asset integrity monitoring. The immediate objective of this research is to investigate how a dynamic risk model can be developed for an offshore system. Subsequently, two dynamic risk assessment models were developed for an offshore gas turbine driven electrical power generation system. Bayesian Networks provided the base theory and algorithms to develop the models. The first model focuses on the consequences of one component failure. While the second model focuses on the consequences of a fuel gas release with escalated fire and explosion, based upon several initiating failures. This research also provides a Multiple Attribute Decision Analysis (MADA) to determine the most suitable Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) configuration for asset integrity monitoring. The WSN is applied to the same gas turbine system as in the dynamic risk assessment models. In the future, this work can be expanded to other systems and industries by applying the developed Asset Integrity Case framework and methodology. The framework outlines the steps to develop a dynamic risk assessment model along with MADA for the most suitable remote sensing and detection methods.

Abstract:
Uppsala municipality has ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by installing solar power. To do this, the municipality has set a goal to install 30 MWp of solar power by the year 2020, and today 25 MWp has yet to be installed. The objective of this study is to investigate if Uppsala municipality is able to install 25 MWp solar power on municipality owned buildings or if an additional solar park installation is required. This is done through simulations and calculations and results are visualized in QGIS, a geographical information system software. The conclusion of this study is that Uppsala municipality will need a solar park at a magnitude of 0.9 MWp and rooftop installations of 24.1 MWp to reach the goal of 30 MWp. The cost of this installation would be 296 MSEK. The GIS-layers illustrates municipality owned rooftops suitable for solar power installation and module installation proposals. A sensitivity analysis is performed were the type of module is changed, which in turn affects efficiency and module angles. The outcome of the sensitivity analysis is that the type of module and the module efficiency are important parameters that affect the result. Depending on how valuable the land area is, higher module efficiency could be advantageous. Future work could involve an investigation about which type of PV technology that best satisfies Uppsala municipality’s priorities.

Abstract:

Although South Africa has significant energy reserves, some 50-60% of the South African population is without access to electricity. Lack of infrastructure is one of the root courses of which energy supply forms an important component. The energy sector is an integral part of the whole economy, and energy planning requires analysis of the links between the energy sector and the national economy. Local economy can be developed, if energy provision and supporting services are made available to rural areas. South Africa has, so far, developed and implemented energy activities without a solid base in energy policy and macro-economic planning. This has resulted in the situation where energy planning has taken place on a sectoral basis without much regard for socio-economic development objectives or inter-energy considerations.

Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019BOR30010/document.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the contemporary communicational space on the basis of the installation form. The challenge is to consider how installation manages to create or renegotiate forms of visibilities in a media-orientated society in which exhibitions have become the norm of what is visible. These sensitive reformulations result from the scenography movement, defined as a process of creation and representation through which “communicational scenography” may be contained. The artistic installation is the archetypal space that will be used to undertake this reflection. Using a corpus of contemporary art installations, we will analyse the processes by which installation leads to a heterogeneous experience of space, which typically favours the immersion of the visitor and the reversal of frameworks which serve to make the real world intelligible. These processes make installation a space which allows for experimentation with the sensory experience in relation to spatial layouts which redefine its division. Installation may be appreciated as a form of scenography constituting of communicational processes and practices which tend to insert themselves in between the aesthetic experience and the social experiment of space. The “anthropological communication of the sensible”, promoted by all sorts of artistic devices, illustrates precisely the way in which installation, as a social stage, transforms both our perception and methods of communication. To grasp and put into perspective these issues, which criss-cross between the disciplines of communication and aesthetic, this reflection will focus upon space specifically within the museum. The museum, acting as both a set designed space and a stage of materialised exhibition, makes it possible to observe how the communicational paradigm intervenes in cultural practices through the role played by space, here defined as a “scene”. Initially considered in the typical environment of museum heterotopia, installation will be observed over the course of its derritorialisation in social space, but also through circular and reflexive processes that it may have on our perspective. In the end, it is a question of whether installation, a not only an artistic practice, can act as a medium or a template to analyse the contemporary communicational space and, further still, as a hypothetical “society of installation”
