Full textThe urgent need for changes in high school in Brazil led the researcher of this thesis to propose changes in the traditional way of working with the chemistry students. With the development of information and communication technologies, it is necessary that the public is included in the digital culture that may be part of the global society of today. Thus, it is also the school's task to find the inclusion of subjects in digital culture and use of new technologies is important and should be considered when planning activities for learning with students from the Basic School. The main object of this thesis research was to study the cognitive processes that involve aspects of the learning of chemistry with the use of these technologies. It is found as a pedagogical architecture oriented students, containing experimental activities, production of videos and digital models in the development of digital environment-Squeak Etoys, can contribute to the construction of chemical knowledge. The Pedagogical Architecture means as a set of strategies, group dynamics, educational software and tools to support cooperation to promote learning. The analysis of the processes experienced by the subjects of the research was motivated by the Genetic Epistemology of Jean Piaget. From the analysis of data from the research aims to propose guidelines for the teaching activities with the use of digital environments, where processes occur in which the subject may pose, extend and consolidate their knowledge.

Full textThe PhD research activities are focused on ground improvement application. The objective is to study the permeation grouting technique in granular soils and to understand the hydro-mechanical properties that can be obtained using non-conventional injection materials. During the project it has been developed an injection apparatus and a monitoring system of the grouting process that is used to study the permeation process and to develop a theoretical, and then analytical and numerical approach. Furthermore, the injection apparatus is used to simulate the permeation of different injection materials in soils and to generate specimen for hydraulic and mechanical evaluations. The experimental set-up comprises of a polycarbonate extruded clear tube, 50 mm in inner diameter and variable length (with a maximum of 1.6 m), and two floating caps at the extremities with a double sealing system. Once it has been filled with a selected soil it is inserted in a rigid steel chassis and the hole injection system can support 100 bar injection pressure. To simulate the soil micro-mechanical behavior has been created a loading system, composed by a screw that can apply a confining pressure on the soil sample. The column is then instrumented: • two load cells to control the confining pressure; • five pressure transducers to control the imposed pressure; • two pressure switches to impose pressure to the fluid; • laser ranging distance sensors to measure the flow rate; • vision camera to detect fluid front advancement. The data from the sensors are collected by employing Arduino processors and all the results are elaborated and displayed in real time with a Labview platform software. Some of the sensors were properly calibrated after being installed and all the measurements and the injection apparatus are validated before starting the test. The injection apparatus has been used to test different conventional and non-conventional grout with different rheological properties: sodium silicate, acrylic resin, colloidal silica, cement and micro-cement grout. For some of the previous injection materials have been defined a rheological time-dependent law. All these tests have been used to understand the permeation phenomena and to define an analytical and numerical predictive model that could be valid for all the soil in all conditions. By using this approach and by knowing the soil hydraulic properties, related to a new geotechnical project, it should be possible to indicate to designers the type of grout, the injection parameters and the injection geometry for this specific ground improvement application. Finally, a hydro-mechanical investigation of the different injection materials has been performed, consisting of the following test: permeability, unconfined compressive strength, triaxial test and brasilian test. For each injection test it has been evaluated the difference mechanical behavior from the bottom to the top part of the column, resulting from a variable soil saturation during the permeation process, that, in a ground with a grout spherical propagation, can be related to the radial distance from the injection point. Furthermore, a mechanical comparison, in term of friction angle and cohesion, is performed for the different grout types and, for some of them, at different curing time.

After a selective literature review of the main theoretical concepts used in the research (chapter 1), the work provides a general overview of the Italian TDs approved by MIUR at November 2007 (chapter 2). In the third chapter the work provides a statistical analysis of the regional innovation contexts using a wide set of indicators measuring: levels of regional specialization in the sectors chosen for TDs implementation; science and technology performances; features of the economic environment (entrepreneurship and venture capital funds). In the fourth chapter it is presented a system of four synthetic indices providing information on: 1) regional specializations; 2) scientific-technological performances; 3) economic environment. The fourth synthetic index, being the combination of the previous three, reflects simultaneously all the three dimensions. The analysis of statistical data is complemented, in chapter 4, by an evaluation of the institutional features of the TDs based on the information gathered in chapter 2. This has allowed to bring together the outcomes of chapter 2 and of chapter 3 in order to formulate some policy conclusions.

Full textIn the high competitive contemporary market, logistics plays a key role in determining which companies and countries will succeed in the supply of ethanol. The environmental appeals, due to the emission of greenhouse effect gases and the concern with the instability of oil prices contribute to the increased use of ethanol as a fuel to replace or reduce the use of petroleum. Currently in Brazil, renewable fuels account for 19% of the energy used in the transportation sector. Therefore, Brazil is the only case of successful technological transition to biofuel on a large scale. To meet the growing demand for ethanol, new planting areas of sugar cane and ethanol distilleries are popping up mainly in the central-southern Brazil, changing the product distribution profile. As so, the need for innovation in the logistics of ethanol becomes relevant. The theoretical theme of this thesis is innovation in logistics services and logistics. In this research, we analyze the contribution of technological innovation in the logistics of ethanol. And what organizational changes occur as a result of these technological innovations. The research methodology used in this thesis is the method of multiple case studies and four companies were chosen to participate in the research; being two companies that operate logistics: Stolthaven and Logum and two major companies producing ethanol: Copersucar and Raizen. Among other analyses, the results of the research show that technological changes have contributed significantly to innovation in logistics and logistics services of ethanol, beyond what the literature shows, which concentrates basically on the contribution of Information Technology and Communication (ITC) innovation in logistics. The research has showed that there are relevant technological innovations in transport, transshipment and warehouse. Besides innovation classification in incremental or radical, logistic innovation suggests a character of systemic innovation considering the form that its process is architected. The research also indicate that due to technological innovations that occurred in the last ten years, significant organizational changes occurred mainly in professional profiles of terminal operators on storage and transshipment of ethanol. Ten years ago there was not much need for qualified operators, so candidates with a background in elementary education were accepted. Nowadays, there is the need of at least technical education or even higher. And even with the higher education companies must implement proper training to enable the employees to new technologies. However, these organizational changes were more significant in the logistic operating companies than in companies producing ethanol. This research gives original contributions to knowledge in the area of innovation management in logistics, building new theories from case studies and proposes a conceptual model of innovation in logistics, as well as contributions to the executive practice of ethanol supply.

Full textNowadays, companies find themselves working in a market characterized by a climate of uncertainty: customer needs change quickly and the markets are becoming more and more competitive. It is therefore important for companies to find ways to adapt with a certain reactivity, in order not to be overcome by the competition. Parallel to the evolution of the markets, there is an explosion in the amount of information that can be found both inside and outside the boundaries of the company, which is facilitated by the spread of computer networks and distributed systems, the first among them being the Internet. The need to manage information in a rational and organic way and the prospect of having to supply increasingly personalized goods and services, has led the companies to review their processes and their way of operating by relying on information systems. These are no longer simple information management software programs, but real active tools, a source of competitive advantage. We are talking about ERP, Enterprise Resource Planning, IT packages capable of integrating all the operational and administrative processes on a corporate basis. Integrated functionality systems supporting not only planning, but the entire decision-making dimension: they support business management in all its areas, from accounting to personnel management, from customer relations to suppliers and warehouses. Integration is possible not only thanks to particular (certain se vuoi lasciare particular sotto) software architectures, but also thanks to the fact that ERPs incorporate the "best practices", i.e. the most common process practices found/employed in excellent companies. More precisely, most of the most widespread systems consist of a central software core and the possibility of adding optional peripheral software modules, each concerning the management of a particular specific business area of defined competences (e.g. accounting, materials management, planning, production, etc.). Implementing an ERP system means "rethinking and changing" a company's way of acting; as a matter of fact, a transformation of a company involves an operational, strategic and inter-company plan. Thanks to the prescriptive feature, ERPs impose on the company a set of procedures that become simple and linear routines, eliminating the barriers between functions, and make the organization more agile and reactive. The implementation activity is very critical and delicate and can take a very long time, sometimes even more than 20 months. Other aspects that express the criticality of the project are the high costs to be incurred, the inclusion of the people involved in the process/project and the possibility of failure. Bearing in mind the above-described factors, in the first and second part of the thesis the concept of the ERP system will be studied in depth, defining its structure, evolution, advantages, limits and implementation phases, with particular reference to the process Reengineering phase, i.e. the redesign of the business processes. Finally, in the third and last part of the thesis, the project carried out at the companies of the "Bronzini Group" during the research doctorate will be presented. The project was developed as follows: In the first year: in-depth study of the currently available techniques, in order to understand how to improve them or replace them with innovative techniques. In the second year: configuration of the information system necessary for the implementation of these techniques and/or new techniques designed ad hoc into the business. In the third year: the implementation and subsequent analysis of the results achieved. This case study describes a project aimed at introducing a new latest-generation computer system with high-performance hardware, software (ERP) from the Microsoft Dynamics Navision 2015 package, capable of synergistically integrating all business processes and interconnections with the online world, which provides for a complete implementation in 2019. The analysis of the paper proposes an in-depth study of the situation in which the company presents itself, both in terms of activity and information, thus obtaining a “map” of the existing processes (called AS-IS). Thus, the needs and criticalities of the current management of the activities are noted, in order to outline the objectives to be pursued through the implementation of the new ERP system (TO-BE analysis). Finally, the GAP ANALYSIS is presented, as a comparison of the difference between the starting situation with the old management and the future perspective with the new solution adopted by the company. By implementing/using a new management system, the "Bronzini Group" aims to extend the process control to all the business areas involved and improve the entire flow of order management, from budgeting to invoicing and subsequent archiving and historical data management. The ultimate goal is to be able to provide a new tool in which all information is available to the people involved in the process/project, in order to optimize time and results and guarantee safety at work. Adapting innovative processes allows to obtain. • Reduction of the resources consumed, therefore also a cost reduction; • Reduction of the time of necessary for the execution of maintenance processes; • Improvement of the operativity/effectiveness of specialized personnel, also from the point of view of operational safety; • Improvement of the customers’ assets undergoing maintenance, in terms of efficiency and environmental sustainability, productivity and safety at work; • Improvement of the overall service rendered to the customer, in terms of quality and professionalism, with consequent increase in competitiveness. Until a few years ago, companies were practically forced to create their information software like a tailored suit, commissioning software houses for that job, while today the case of purchasing “pre-packaged” ERP packages adaptable to the company’s needs through a process of "parameterization" is prevalent. The advantages offered by the latter are considerable, since the proposed solutions are the result of in-depth studies and advanced theories of information and management and, above all, have already been tested in other companies. The fixed costs of design and development are divided based on the number of packages produced and do not fall entirely on the ordering company. In the design and development of their products, the manufacturers of ERP consider the company as a whole and its processes, and not the individual functions, as was the case with the vast majority of software created ad hoc by smaller companies. Starting from these assumptions it is clear why it is noted that large companies are definitely moving towards the standard industrialized ERP systems. This is not the case with small companies, which prefer to purchase non-ERP systems and have tailor-made systems built by minor software houses at much lower costs than the “big” ERP. Small and medium-sized companies are therefore faced with the most difficult choice: having to decide whether to adopt a customized system or an ERP package. However, it is important for these companies to understand that, with the same functionality, a system custom-built by a software house certainly costs more than an equivalent pre-packaged one (meglio one se non è proprio necessario dire package, cioè se in questo caso sistema e pacchetto sono la stessa cosa). Starting from this consideration, it is clear that spending more money on an ERP system than on an ad hoc system means having a much higher number of features. These may seem superfluous at the time of purchase, but they are actually a guarantee of support for when the company has grown. Therefore, in the comparison between industrialized ERPs and specific tailor-made systems, it is necessary to take into account not only the cost, but also the opportunities represented and the investments that the company will have to sustain in the future to equate the functions of a specific system with those that an ERP system already contains. Some market researches certainly small and medium-sized companies in this direction and that is why all the major ERP manufacturers have already started to contend for this market sector. Having made the appropriate economic assessments and having taken the decision of which system to adopt, the real critical point, important to highlight in this work, is that, when choosing an ERP system to introduce into the company, it is not easy to immediately evaluate all the advantages because the results are not immediate either. My experience in the “Bronzini Group” goes precisely in this direction: having made the appropriate economic assessments, the decision was taken to adopt an ERP system designed to "adapt" to the needs of the company and therefore flexible and able to improve everything that revolves around each individual business process, including an increase in the company knowledge. However, with the non-immediate results and some problems that arose at the time of the introduction into the business, new needs not foreseen in the initial project arose continuously. This is because reproducing a company system on "paper" is one thing, but reproducing it in the new reality is another. Not all the problems can be foreseen and therefore the fundamental factor must be the ability to be able to manage the new critical issues, relying on reliable partners and trusting in a prepared and solid company structure. Regarding the choice of a reliable partner: the preliminary analysis carried out is adequate and with a very high degree of detail. The expected benefits reflect the mission, which, in fact, places the priority on transforming the need to respond to new market requirements into opportunities for renewal, and it is through the use of a new ERP that the “Bronzini Group” aims to improve its business and increase its competitive capacity in the long term despite the implementation difficulties that this ERP entails. Microsoft Dynamics, for example is a relatively simple system both in terms of installation and use because it maintains the operating logic of all Microsoft software that is distributed on a global scale and that everyone is already familiar with. On the other hand, however, even though the functions provided by Dynamics are numerous, it is not possible to model all the business processes through this ERP. All things considered, Microsoft Dynamics turns out to be a fairly stable system, light and easy to use, perfectly integrated with all Microsoft tools (e.g. Office) and does not require months of training for an operator to be able to use it. Installing an ERP system involves a number of factors that are to be considered at the time of purchase since it is not a simple software that is installed on the client side, the license is paid, and everything is solved. The installation of an ERP system requires an analysis of business processes in order to model them, and this implicates a big change in the work methodology of the company, which, however, is necessary to obtain a good competitive advantage in terms of profit margins. It is fundamental to understand first what is more convenient: a light system with less functionality or one that is complete but more complex to use – if this analysis is not done on time, there is a great risk of losing a lot of money. Another aspect that is not to be underestimated is the pre-implementation phase, where it is critical to identify the needs (analysis of business processes) that should be fulfilled. If from the beginning, during the planning phase, a careful analysis of one's own needs is carried out, involving the main corporate figures, one can be sure that the probability of successful introduction of the ERP will be high. The critical point of the project was in fact the involvement of the company staff in the analysis and the modification/improvement phase of the business processes because it had such an innovative and revolutionary impact on the existing operating structure that it was not always easy to involve the corporate figures responsible for the process in the right way. The implementation project for a new innovative integrated information system has involved performing a series of internal "research and development" activities in collaboration with external Logical System personnel aimed at: a) design and development of new innovative processes b) acquisition, combination, structuring and use of existing scientific, technological and commercial knowledge and skills in order to produce plans, projects or designs for new, modified or improved products, processes or services. The project was born from the company's need to computerize various processes, in order to automate and standardize information flows, save time, minimize errors and eliminate all the customization of documentation, descriptions and procedures inherent in manual management. When the project was started, and still, in the current state of the art, on the market, there is no system capable of covering all the activities that the “Bronzini Group” manages, which are different for each area of activity. Therefore, the only viable solution for computerization was, and remains, to develop a customized system. We are moving from an "information technology" characterized by a scarcity of data, to a new and innovative one that has an abundance of data, which can be increasingly acquired automatically, with speed of exchange and communication in exponential growth, and with globalized access to information. Furthermore, the type of information handled is also changing significantly. Today, the information is all multimedia and hypermedia – that is a composition of information elements of different types (text, images, videos, sounds, procedures, programs and so on) – and these information aggregates can be interconnected with each other by creating a semantic network with high complexity and without dimensional limits, which can also bring hidden aspects to the surface, in essence it can make knowledge emerge automatically. Finally, we cannot overlook the fact that the current automated systems are no longer limited to the task of preserving bits, which must however be interpreted by "humans" so that they are recognized as information. The current automated systems can now act on the basis of the information already present in the system and processed automatically, producing a direct impact on the reality of the "humans", without their aid. Today the project has led to the development of new, completely innovative technical solutions that are already having a very significant impact in the management process of the various branches of activity of the company, especially in the maintenance sector. The project involved: - Internal resources of all the various company areas, for the analysis of the flows and the design of the block diagrams of the various specific procedures; - Technical and project management sectors, for the software development; - External IT consultants, for the design of the software, platforms and interfaces. The project, started in 2015, is currently in full development phase. Given the enormous investment already made in this area and considering that there is no tool on the market able to satisfy all the needs of their business, the company has anyway deemed appropriate to invest additional resources in developing the system so that it works correctly and effectively and automates all business processes in the medium/long term.

Full textTraditional de novo drug discovery is a long, expensive process that is often hampered by high failure rates. A viable alternative strategy is drug repurposing (or drug repositioning), defined as the identification of novel therapeutic indications for already known drugs or drug candidates, as well as synthetic and natural products. Drug repurposing allows to reduce times, risks and costs associated with traditional de novo discovery pipelines, as most compounds have in many cases already passed safety and toxicity studies. Moreover, in recent times the increase in biological, clinical and chemical data has enabled the progress of novel attractive drug repurposing opportunities. Accordingly, the large-scale use of integrated in silico approaches has proven to be an efficient and cost-effective strategy. However, to date there is still a large need for rational protocols and new methodologies to help researchers in this field. Based on these premises, the aim of the PhD project was focused on two main areas of in silico drug repurposing: i) the application of tailored protocols for specific repositioning campaigns; and ii) the development of novel methods and general approaches. During the PhD course, several applications of integrated protocols using different computational approaches were developed for the repositioning of products of both natural and synthetic origin. Data mining from well-known public databases allowed to perform 2D and 3D similarity estimations, and to select appropriate targets to perform in-depth molecular docking studies. Each protocol was customized taking into account the specific characteristics of the molecules under study. Finally, in vitro testing on isolated proteins or cells allowed to experimentally validate the predictions. At the same time, the PhD project focused on the development of innovative protocols capable of providing new assets to researchers working with drug repurposing. For instance, a machine learning (ML) based platform was developed to predict selectivity profiles across different enzyme isoforms. Moreover, the development of the LigAdvisor website, an integrated platform for repurposing and polypharmacology, was also carried out. The implemented projects provided highly satisfactory results. Indeed, over the three years it was possible to: reposition a library of compounds of synthetic origin, by identifying a potent human Carbonic Anhydrase (hCA) II inhibitor, and then design derivatives with dual activity on hCA and the Estrogen Receptors (ER); to reposition natural products on ERβ; to identify candidates for the inhibition of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro). The machine learning hCA screening platform provided excellent predictive performances, which remarkably proved to be better than those obtained by other traditional approaches. Finally, the development of the freely accessible LigAdvisor website provides also non-experts in the field to retrieve a large amount of high quality data and perform a variety of different queries. In conclusion, the results reported in this dissertation demonstrate how the use of computational approaches, artificial intelligence and data mining techniques is indeed of great help in the rational design of repurposing campaigns and useful resources. One of the innovative aspects of the projects carried out is indeed represented by the integration of different established methods in new protocols and platforms, thus increasing their usability and improving the chances of developing successful repositioning campaigns. The data featured here were the subject of multiple publications in international journals, and the novel proposed platforms were made available to the public.

ABSTRACT: Communication design constantly seeks to innovate in the way of transmitting messages to an audience, passing through different processes to achieve what it wishes to communicate. The graphic expression that this message assumes has been evolving over time directly from the technologies applied to communication design, from its limitations and its potential. There has been always the desire to go beyond the borders of existing technology, but never was truly simple and affordable to do until the dawn of the digital age. The emergence of computer and desktop publishing techniques brought new possibilities and gave the designers an expressive freedom never felt before and seemingly limitless. Such freedom has led many areas, especially editorial design, to break with graphical structuring visual codes and a refusal of the grids and all that they mean, which many times leads to a unclear communication with ambiguous results. The concern with how the exploitation of the effects of digital technology affects the quality and effectiveness of the final object is one of the issues of our investigation. In this sense, one of the objectives of this study is to try to understand how it is that such exploitation of technological resources, today, is a project-oriented and conscious decision, or just an easy solution to respond to innovation that communication design should have. Adopting the perspective that the initial phase of any creative project requires rationality and formal knowledge about readability and visual composition, among others, resorted to the good practices of editorial design to isolate a set of parameters that serve to analyse the solutions contemplated in spreads magazine in its aspects of effective communication messages and relate them to the use of technology. Thus, we defined a framework of analysis focusing on the following topics: visual hierarchy, use of space, typography, use of technological resources and full reading the magazine. The case studies referred overtook three Portuguese cultural magazines, that were considered by their characteristics as a physical object and its contact time with the reader, allowing a more sustained analysis of how the use of technology affects the apprehension of the end result. Through direct observation and analysis of case studies, is tried-drawing conclusions and recommendations for future research. The results of the study developed can contribute to alert designers to the importance of the fundamentals of the design process, with its rational and methodological aspects that the communication design should have, so that the approach to available technology enhances effective communication of the message , be responsible and conscious and not an automatic response whose causes are only a superficial seduction by graphic effects that the current digital technology.

This Master's Final Work (MFW), in the form of an Internship Report, is based on a curricular internship held at the Science and Technology Park of Alentejo (PACT), in Évora, performed under the Master's degree in Business Sciences of the Lisbon School of Economics & Management (ISEG). Initially a theoretical framework is presented, starting with a literature review on Science and Technology Parks (STP), and then it is approached the theme of sustainability of organizations in general, concluding with STP in particular. STPs are considered an essential ingredient of the national innovation system in many countries of the world, having a great influence on the social and economic development of the regions where it operates and, consequently, in the country and in the world. However, not everyone can achieve success and there is no standardization on the factors that should evaluate their performance. The second chapter is about PACT, containing its objective, vision, mission and an approach to its sustainability. In the third chapter, the activities related to the internship are referred, as well as their relation with the academic training obtained in the Master's degree. Based on the actual experience of PACT and taking into account the critical spirit acquired, a sustainability model for STP was developed and proposed. Based on this model, a study was conducted on the sustainability of four Portuguese and one Spanish STP's, where the relevance of the sustainability key-variables was analyzed as well as the sustainability profile of the different STPs.

Full textThis study analyses the pedagogical practices of teachers who were students of a Faculty of Education in distance mode. The course propitiates digital inclusion of these students-teachers and, therefore, it is believed that they could have more property to make use of technologies in innovative ways. Pedagogical Innovation is a new concept that fits into a emerging paradigm perspective, where the joint actions of school and teachers are given with a break through the status quo. The focus of innovation is to change the intentional action, well-planned, deliberate, creative, critical and consciously assumed in creation of differentiated and new learning situations to improve educational practice in the school context. The main theoretical reference for this Study, as far as pedagogic innovation, are the authors Fullan, Fino, and Sebarroja. The question of this research is ‘How do teachers, who underwent training in a distance course mediated by network digital technology, use them in their educational practice?'. For the selection of research subjects, the criteria were be uni-instructor, teach in a public school in Porto Alegre and utilize network digital technologies in their educational practices. The methodological approach was performed through case studies through observations with three teachers. The dissertation aims to discuss if what happens in pedagogical practices is truly innovative. Four levels of pedagogic innovation were identified and they were distinguished by the way that technology network is proposed by the teacher in the classroom. Each level was analyzed from three dimensions to innovate.

[a cura dell'autore]
Keywords: Masonry structures, Genetic algorithm, Adaptive finite element model, Strengthening, Composite materials Abstract. Masonry buildings realized in the last centuries are a significant part of the international architectural heritage. The optimal design of the retrofit interventions of these buildings represents a priority and requires the evaluation of their mechanical behavior under static and dynamic loads. Several mechanical models capable to study masonry structures are available in literature and are based on Heyman limit analysis approach. These models cannot be easily adopted within FEM codes. Within this context, a Genetic Algorithm is implemented within a refinement adaptive finite element model to computational mesh of shell surfaces. The proposed model researches a ‘safe’ thrust surface of a masonry vault within a design domain, by minimizing the mean value of the principal tensile stresses carried by the unreinforced portion of the material (fitness function). The design domain coincides with either the vault volume, in the case of unreinforced masonry members, or an external region of the vault in correspondence with the reinforced areas, in the case of the vault strengthened with either Fiber Reinforced Polymer or Fabric Reinforced Cementitious composites. The proposed methodology allows evaluating the structural safety of masonry vault and defining an optimal design of reinforcement pattern. [edited by author]
