Mouzakitis, Alexandros. "Innovative solutions for automotive embedded software development : innovation report." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2016. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/93362/.

Full text
Abstract:
Embedded software is shaping and influencing our world and it is unimaginable to realise day to day life without it. Since the introduction of the first Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in the 1970s, the automotive industry has seen a substantial increase of embedded software in vehicles. The use of embedded software in the automotive industry has led to a significant increase in the number and complexity of different vehicle systems, features and functions. This level of complexity drives premium vehicles with no fewer than 70 ECUs interconnected by more than five on-board network systems such as Controller Area Network (CAN), Local Interconnect Network (LIN), Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST), FlexRay and Ethernet. In a typical automotive development process, the main challenge for the engineers is to uncover as many failure modes and/or software defects as possible during the early stages of the vehicle programme. During the early phases of the development, failure modes and/or software defects are difficult to uncover but easy and inexpensive to fix. During the latter phases of the development, failure modes and/or software defects are easy to uncover since the final product has been built. At this stage, failure modes and/or software defects are hard and expensive to fix as changes required in the embedded software. The aim of this research was to develop and deploy innovative solutions in order to shift failure modes and/or software defects detection early in automotive product development. The initial research work was conducted through an analysis of failure modes and/or software defects found during a typical Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) vehicle programme development. This preliminary work also then focused on supplier base capability for automotive embedded software development. The research findings from the internal and external analysis, together with the literature review on best practice have driven the development of four solutions. A process called Model-based Product Engineering (MBPE) was created and deployed within JLR. The MBPE process brings together model-based development and other development processes in a standardised form. A new generic Design Verification Interface (DVI) for test exchange and traceability across all MBPE process levels was developed. The generic DVI eliminates or reduces redundant efforts of re-writing test cases and test scripts for automated testing. A semi-formal Standardised Design Verification Method (SDVM) was developed for defining test cases for all vehicle systems in a common template. The SDVM presents test cases as machine readable data and allows auto-generation of test scripts suitable for automated testing. An end-to-end solution called Platform Independent Test System was developed in order to integrate the MBPE, DVI and SDVM solutions. The proposed PITS supports all levels of system abstraction from the test case definition phase to the execution of automated scripts in both offline and real-time test environments. Evaluation results have demonstrated a significant shift in the detection of failure modes and/or software defects towards the early phases of the product development. An early detection of more than 50% of failure modes and/or software defects was achieved. This is a substantial change from the previous state where embedded software validation was conducted only after supplier software release. Furthermore, results have shown a 40% reduction in engineering effort for test scripts creation and a five to tenfold reduction in engineering time for automated testing.

Abstract:
Master of Landscape Architecture

Some cities target innovation to bolster their economy, because it drives economic growth. An emerging trend is to use urban regeneration to accomplish this desire. However, lack of understanding about land development effects on innovation is a major concern. Such uncertainty makes it difficult to create visions, plans, and designs for these environments. A major dilemma presents itself. In what way do urban designers develop innovation economies and what confidence can they have in those roles considering the lack of evidence about urban sites within larger innovation systems? In response to the dilemma, this research documents projects facilitating innovation in local economies. A catalog was the tool for exploring characteristics of these places and their connections to economic systems. The catalog acts as a decision framework by displaying these relationships through a goal, objective, and tactic hierarchy. This format illustrates how site-level decisions impact specific parts of the economy. By using the catalog, planners and designers may guide innovation through urban development. To accomplish this, developments must draw talented people with creative ideas and organizations willing to invest in those ideas. When synergies form between these groups, new goods and services become available. To build this innovative milieu, planners and designers EXPLORE regional and site-based opportunities to determine the tactics they utilize. Next, they DEVELOP plans for the places desired by and required for people who INNOVATE. These findings collectively instill confidence in the roles of planners and designers in their quest to cultivate innovative environments.

The real estate industry is very conservative and risk averse, yet innovation is critical to its long term viability. While innovation does occur in real estate development, it is often discouraged and not the standard approach. This thesis focuses on understanding the motivations and obstacles facing real estate developers who decide to pursue innovative products, processes and systems. The study explores the challenges of developing co-living, a recent innovative real estate product in order to understand why this product is taking off across the country, and how it has been implemented in Boston and New York City. Insight into the innovation processes are derived from site visits and multiple interviews with professionals from different sectors of real estate: developers, consultants and regulatory authorities. The thesis concludes by describing five principles of innovative real estate development, relating to: Market Demand, Vision, Adoption, External Forces and X-Factors. While these principles are derived from experience in creating co-living projects, they are illustrative and important for the innovation process in all types of real estate products.

Abstract:
In this dissertation we report on the design, prototyping, data collection and results of a research project aimed at identifying if and how trust affects the innovativeness of a partnership between two economic agents. The purpose of the research is to increase our understanding of trust and its impact on the outcome of cooperation. In particular, we have studied the effect of trust on partners’ creativity and willingness to invest financially in a joint development. The methodology combines an experiment and two questionnaires. After having analysed the existing literature on the role played by trust in partnerships, we describe the methodology adopted with the purpose of understanding how and under which conditions the conclusions obtained through an experiment can be generalized to contribute to existing theoretical models. We present the different sessions organized to collect data for the subsequent analysis and the conclusions that can be obtained. Our results show that more trustful partners invest higher amounts in the alliance, while there seems to be an optimum amount of mutual trust between partners to maximize their joint creativity and innovativeness; if the level of mutual trust is below or above this threshold, their joint innovativeness decreases. We discuss also some additional conclusions that can be derived from our data: in particular we were able to observe that conflicts, even task-oriented ones, are detrimental to joint innovation while an open and friendly working environment favours joint creativity

Abstract:
Developing sector-specific university degrees is a challenging process for universities and sectoral members. The development of these degrees needs to incorporate industry-specific resources whilst satisfying the universities' institutional degree requirements. The process is particularly problematic when there has not previously been a degree devoted to the sector and when there has not been sector-wide communication about the need for a degree. This study provides an empirical investigation of the development of Canada's first retail management degree and examines how discursive processes constituted an innovative practice of sector-specific degree development in a fragmented, occupational field. These processes were innovative because they involved a corporate-university partnership, multiple collaborations of institutional and corporate embedded actors, and particular forms of legitimating discursive work. Given the institutional nature of the university, this practice represents a process of institutionalisation, whereby the innovative practice becomes a legitimate means of degree development. By examining this unique case, this study develops an analytic framework to analyse discursive institutionalisation through archival documentation and qualitative interviews. The discursive work performed through the data is characterised by the prominence of generalised issues, and by the nature of its synchronicity, recursiveness and convergence. The resulting institutionalisation processes perform discursive institutional work that is purposive, synchronised, recursive and convergent. This study therefore provides an understanding of how discursive processes institutioalise an innovative practice of retail management degree development.

Photovoltaic processing is one of the processes that have significance in semiconductor process line. It is complicated due to the no. of elements involved that directly or indirectly affect the processing and final yield. So mathematically or empirically we can’t say assertively about the results specially related with diffusion, antireflective coating and impurity poisoning. Here I have experimented and collected data on the mono-crystal silicon wafers with varying properties and outputs. Then by using neural network with available experimental data output required can be estimated which is further tested by the test data for authenticity. One can say that it’s a kind of process simulation with varying input of raw wafers to get desired yield of photovoltaic mono-crystal cells.

Abstract:
Silicon radiation detectors fabricated at the IMB-CNM (CSIC) Clean Room facilities using the most innovative techniques in detector technology are presented in this thesis. TCAD simulation comprises an important part in this work as becomes an essential tool to achieve exhaustive performance information of modelled detectors prior their fabrication and subsequent electrical characterization. Radiation tolerance is also investigated in this work using TCAD simulations through the potential and electric field distributions, leakage current and capacitance characteristics and the response of the detectors to the pass of different particles for charge collection efficiencies. Silicon detectors investigated in this thesis were developed for specific projects but also for applications in experiments which can benefit from their improved characteristics, as described in Chapter 1. Double-sided double type columns 3D (3D-DDTC) detectors have been developed under the NEWATLASPIXEL project in the framework of the CERN RD50 collaboration for the ATLAS Inner Detector upgrades and the introduction of a new pixel layer called Insertable B-Layer. The radiation tolerance of slim-edge (“edgeless”) detectors, whose current terminating structure reduces the insensitive area of detectors to 50 μm, for close-to-beam experiments like the TOTEM experiment at HL-LHC, have been simulated under the EU TOSTER project. Ultra-thin 3D detectors, which combine 3D detector technology and thin membrane fabrication process, are also studied in this work. They provide an alternative to the present Neutral Particle Analyzers at the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in the ions detection for plasma diagnosis, and they are also being used in neutron detection experiments after being covered with any layer containing 10B whose high capture cross-section of thermal neutrons allows their detection through the emitted alpha. Finally, active-edge detectors have been studied for applications in X-ray beam positioning, X-ray sensors for beamstops and detectors with pad, microstrip and Medipix2 designs for research purposes.

Abstract:

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It has become evident that the knowledge-driven, innovation economy supercedes the industrial era at the beginning of the 21st century. Within this environment characterized by innovation and the emphasis on brand owning companies, successful organizations will be those that transform information into valuecreating knowledge and dynamically leverage the knowledge to innovate and capture additional customer value. In contrast to an emphasis on traditional tangible assets to explain organizational success, recent strategic management literature focuses on intangible resources, viz. intellectual capital. Knowledgeempowered customers are driving many innovations in this environment, and consequently, value innovation shifts relatively from the supply chain to the demand chain in business value systems, with focus on brand equity development. The encompassing challenge that companies face in this new environment is how to identify and leverage all sources of value. These important assets include, among other factors, brands and the knowledge residing within the consumers’ mind. Due to the significant shift towards knowledge-networking and outsourcing of many organizational activities, it is increasingly incumbent to incorporate and integrate knowledge residing outside the borders of an organization. However, the potential value of brand building efforts will not be realized unless proper knowledge management practices, systems, approaches and tools are put into place within the organization to capitalize on the concept of knowledge-enhanced brand equity. Accordingly, firms require a framework or model to illustrate the leveraging of knowledge for innovative brand development and management. This study provides an in-depth overview and synthesis of knowledge and brand management literature concerned with the symbiotic relationship between the utilization of knowledge and innovative brand development. A preliminary conceptual model to demonstrate the relationship between brand equity and knowledge-based is proposed.

Full text
Abstract:
This master thesis is a product development project conducted with Mammut Sports Group AGin Seon, Switzerland. The goal of this thesis was to reconsider the concept of quickdraws, which are used for lead climbing, and to come up with a new system. Mammut Sports Group AG founded in 1862 is today a leading supplier for alpine climbing and outdoor equipment, its products are well-known for their high quality, functionality and being innovative. Quickdraws follow mainly the same system since decades, two karabiners connected through a sling, one karabiner to clip to the protection on the wall, the other to clip in the rope. The two karabiners barely differ except sometimes the gate. A new concept should take safety, weight, price and usability into account. Extensive investigation of how quickdraws are used was conducted to spark ideas for the new concepts. Literature, standards and climbing organization reports of accidents and usage advices were studied. Market and patent research was conducted to investigate what has been already released and tried out on sell. Further, the approach of Netnography, Shadowing and Storyboard was applied to get user insights. The developed ring-karabiner side presents a safer gate against unintended gate-opening compare to traditional karabiners, and with this it should increase safety. Through the new shape a fixation to the sling is possible and even necessary, compare to traditional quickdraws where the sling requires being free movable around the karabiner protection side. This can make it possible to fulfill some climber’s additional need to reach protections from slightly further distance and increase safety. Production price and weight are estimated to keep equal with traditional karabiners. Some users recognize the new product with positive enthusiasm indicating that there is a potential market. To summarize, with help of different ideation and concept development methods, a totally new quickdraw ring karabiner-concept of clipping into the protection on the wall was developed. In loops the concept was validated and developed further to meet the requirements. Moreover, using method for concept-testing it was important to investigate how the potential user would consider the new model.

Abstract:
Children around the world are routinely being treated with medicines that have not been designed and developed for this specific patient population, putting them at risk of inaccurate dosing and side effects. In the view of these considerations, the PhD research project was addressed to the use of specific formulation strategies for the development of innovative paediatric dosage forms. The research has been structured in three case studies, concerning different oral formulations: mucoadhesive buccal films, dispersible granules and complex suspensions. The first part of the research investigated the use of polymeric films for systemic absorption of ondansetron hydrochloride through the buccal mucosa. Several mixtures of hydrophilic polymers were evaluated to optimize the hydration ability of such films, the residence time at the site of application and the drug permeation profile. The second approach was focused on the development of fast dispersible granules for oral administration of praziquantel. Granules represent a flexible dosage form for preschool-aged children that can be given as dispersion in beverages or administered with food, improving the palatability of the formulations and the adherence to therapy. The last part of the work was carried out at the University of Birmingham and faced one of the central challenge associated with paediatric treatment: the taste masking of molecules characterized by bitter taste. To achieve this purpose, polyelectrolyte complexes, composed of whey protein and pectin, and able to encapsulate active substances were developed. Caffeine was selected as model drug for its particularly bitter taste. Finally, the results presented in this thesis demonstrated that specific formulation strategies can be used to overcome the predominant issues related to paediatric administration of medicines, in order to guarantee the complete adherence of children to the therapy and thus the success of the treatment.

Abstract:
Preterm infants are sensitive to incorrect levels of oxygen in the blood. Thus, the oxygen levels need to be monitored continuously. The most commonly used method today has several limitations and therefore constant blood tests has to be taken. Neosense Technologies AB has developed an electrochemical sensor that measures blood oxygen tension continuously and in real time. This thesis aims to develop a prototype algorithm to derive cardiac output based on dynamic changes in inhaled fraction of oxygen and the corresponding change in arterial oxygen tension using the electrochemical sensor. Two measurements were done using the sensor to measure the step response of partial pressure of oxygen to obtain data to develop the algorithm. Using the obtained data, two algorithms were developed and from the validation analysis one of the algorithms were chosen due to significant better results.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate how project managers self estimates their leadership and project members perceive motivation in pre-development projects at the Karolinska University Hospital and Scania. Design/methodology/approach This study is quantitative and deductive. To investigate the presence of transformational leadership in project managers and internal motivation in project members we have chosen to use two questionnaires, Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire and Work Preference Inventory. Researchers have examined both forms in terms of validity and reliability. Findings The results of our study showed that a project manager at Karolinska had a higher incidence of transformational leadership than at Scania. In both organizations the transactional leadership was also fairly common while the occurrence of passive avoidance leadership was lower. In the analysis of our data the subfactors in the MLQ Leader Form (5x-Short) showed that idealized influence and intellectual stimulation were higher at Karolinska for transformational leadership. For the transactional leadership was contingent reward higher at Karolinska while leadership with active exception was higher at Scania. Our investigation showed that the project members in both organizations had a higher incidence of intrinsic motivation compared to extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation in project members was significantly higher at Scania than Karolinska but there was no difference regarding intrinsic motivation. When the data from the subfactors in WPI were analysed it showed that the factors of intrinsic motivation differed very little between the organisations. Extrinsic motivation factor compensation was higher at Scania in the projects but in general it was the same for the project members in both organizations. The second external motivation factor, orientation towards recognition and control of others was higher at Scania both in projects and in general. Research limitations/implications In our investigation we examined a selection of projects in two organizations. The selection was done based on Scanias definition of pre-development projects. Practical implications Previous research suggests that transformational leadership and internal motivation is particularly important in the early phase of radical innovation. Our investigation showed that both transformational leadership and internal motivation was more common than transactional leadership and extrinsic motivation at both Karolinska and Scania. A next step would be to expand the number of organizations and projects. It would also be interesting to examine if leadership and/or motivation has any correlation to the result of projects. It would show whether increased transformational leadership and internal motivation could have a positive effect on the results in pre-development projects. Originality/value We have not found any research that compares two organizations engaged in pre-development projects with regard to transformational leadership and intrinsic motivation. Keywords: pre-development project, transformational leadership, innovative behaviour and intrinsic motivation

Abstract:
Time is a highly significant element in the complex process of educational change. It bears on all the components of innovative projects. It influences decisions to embark on a particular change model or a strategy. And ultimately time affects adoption decisions. But in spite of such significance, world-wide experience of introducing innovative programmes shows frequent occurrence of time underestimation. This study attempts to explain the reasons behind the phenomenon of time underestimation in educational change. In the context of the Iraqi educational system, it appears that there are a number of reasons behind time underestimation in planning and implementing innovations. These can be grouped under two categories: economic and non-economic. The former explains the underestimation of time as a deliberate effort made by people in order to reduce the apparent cost of a lengthy process. The latter interprets the phenomenon by organizational, structural, or psychological factors. These include incomplete and weak situational analysis prior to introducing innovative projects, lack of coordination pertaining to prevalent work modes, predominance of a top-down change model the outcome of which is the absence of a feeling of ownership, lack of skilled and well-trained personnel, lack of clear-cut objectives and distinct features of projects, lack of dependable criteria for estimating the cost of projects, fear of accountability on the part of both the planners and the implementing bodies, lack of systematic and well-timed evaluation, and lack of interest or poor motivation. Currently, economic considerations of time in the education sector are gaining ascendency. The opportunity cost of time makes a strong case for an efficient utilization pattern of behaviour pertaining to time. And it appears imperative to base time estimation primarily on the cost that this entails.

Among the main issues we face today dynamics of changes and unpredictability of transformation trajectories should be definitely mentioned. As a result of even just these two our own lives are faster and working conditions are more and more demanding. From personal micro-level to socio-economic macro-level we can see human creativity and its innovative outcomes. And at all that levels different socio-economic systems obtain more and more self-organising potential. In addition, having much less material limits both intelligence and creativity are very promising in the context of sustainable development in times of our “information age” and “knowledge society”.

Abstract:
Innovation has been powering industrial development for 200 years. Today, in times of social and environmental pressures, it is even more needed to support the transition towards a more sustainable society. Multinational corporations are potential systemic change agents by their global presence and impact magnitude on economics. However, a combination of short-termism and technological inertia rather favours incremental innovation. Meanwhile, some smaller companies have quickly integrated the value of doing ‘better’ rather than doing ‘less bad’, making innovation go hand-in-hand with sustainable development. Therefore, acquisitions represent an opportunity to spread a solution to addressing sustainability challenges faster, but the corporate decision-makers need concise, constructive guidelines for selecting and integrating these external opportunities. This thesis describes how a Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) helps to identify the gaps in the current practices and supports the creation of guidelines for corporations acquiring innovative companies in order to move towards sustainability.

Abstract:
Breakthrough innovations are vital for the global economy and even our survival as a species. They appear as creative leaps and insights without obvious connection to existing knowledge and are extremely valuable to organisations, giving them significant competitive advantage. Historiometric and psychopathological evidence shows that breakthrough innovations are often associated with individuals and affective dysfunction; yet innovation today is widely held to be an organisational phenomenon operationalised though a model of creativity based on positive affective experiences and group activities which may be particularly unsuited to innovative thinkers. Research upon which the current paradigm for creativity and innovation are based is detached from real world outcomes and has been challenged as to its validity. Little data exists outside of experiments or indirect observation of naturally occurring affective experiences and the mood-creativity-innovation link has yet to be proven; we still know very little about how breakthrough innovations occur. This unique study addresses this significant gap in innovation research with a two-year longitudinal case study of a breakthrough innovation being developed for a multi-national Fast-Moving Consumer Goods company. It followed the journey of a lone innovator and attempts to answer the research question: “Can a fear of failure lead to breakthrough innovation?” The innovation space was investigated from three perspectives: technology, organisation and innovator, to build a picture of the highly immersive and emotionally charged experience of innovating. Many new insights were gained, and with extensive support from literature, new tools for the management of technology and the interface between innovators and organisations were developed, along with ground-breaking research into the mood-creativity innovation link. These are delivered through a series of four journal papers. The key finding from this research has been the discovery of the innovation-wave, a phenomenon which for the first time provides evidence for the mood-creativity-innovation link; intimately connecting real-world creative efficacy with emotion and specifically a ‘fear of failure’. From this finding a new theory and psycho-cognitive model for a distinct form of creativity called innovative thinking, driven by negative affect (mood) and specifically suited to achieving a breakthrough innovation through overcoming apparently insoluble problems, was posited and a hypothesis proposed and tested using a sophisticated innovation simulation developed especially for this purpose. Evidence from the case study and later experiment provide support for the research question and the lone innovator. This study makes a unique contribution to our understanding of creativity and innovation which could have a significant impact on how both are researched, taught and managed in the future. Being able to understand and possibly manipulate the innovation-wave, if proven correct, could be vitally important for maximising the potential for creating breakthrough innovations to the benefit of us all.

Innovation is a hot topic; innovation is happening everywhere. Innovation is "romantic", reaching for the stars, against all odds, solving the problem no one thought possible. Most CEOs would not characterize survival as "romantic". Innovate or perish; the mantra, the truth, plain, stark, cold and naked. It gets worse; the environment is rapidly changing. Sophisticated customers are demanding quick responses with low cost, high quality products. What once worked with brilliant success is now failing. If innovation is happening everywhere, it is increasingly not happening here. During the past two years, a multi-vendor government project consisting of two vendors geographically segregated across three regions has seen tremendous success followed by almost total collapse. Initial program status and progress indicate near exponential trajectory: ahead of schedule, under budget and all functionality present. However, collapse was not too far off. The integration effort was a complete failure. Key schedule milestone dates were continuously missed. The gap between functionality believed completed and really completed widened. The story reads like a classic runaway project. Worse, the budget was near exhaustion. The central contribution of the analysis is the identification of the innovation trap. The innovation trap identifies conflicting corporate objectives governing the innovation strategy for new business development and the product development strategy of existing programs in the product pipeline. This study examines the innovation trap by applying System Dynamics techniques to develop a set of heuristics not only to identify collapse conditions but also how to address the problem. The goal of this study is to develop a concept for an improved organization and structure for today's high technology product companies where innovation is crucial for corporate success.
