Abstract:
The first legal texts to contain any rules relating forensic medicine expertises in Portugal date back to the 16th century. But the qualitative leap that actually allowed Portuguese Forensic Medicine to develop, bringing it to the stage where it is today, only occurred three centuries later, in the 19th century. Indeed, the first university teaching of forensic medicine appeared in 1836, with independent courses bearing this title, and in 1899 the first official forensic medical services were set up. A number of changes took place thereafter, and throughout the 20th century, always serving to improve the system. They culminated in a thorough reorganisation of the entire framework of forensic medicine in Portugal in the transition from the 20th to the 21st century, more exactly in 2000/1001. This consisted of unifying the Portuguese forensic medical services in a single National Institute of Legal (Forensic) Medicine (“Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal” - INML). In the following pages we shall concentrate particularly on the present situation of forensic medicine and other forensic sciences in Portugal and on the glimmering future prospects.

Abstract:
AbstractSunflower is an important oilseed crop grown throughout the year due to its short duration, day neutral, low photoperiod sensitivity and wider adoptability to agroclimatic conditions and soil types in Asian countries. Lower yields of sunflower in rainfed vertisols are attributed to lower soil moisture and nutrients availability. In this situation, we conducted field studies at research farm and farmers’ fields to know the response of sunflower to rainwater conservation and nutrient management in vertisols of India. Compartmental bunding and ridges and furrows conserved more rainwater in profile, thus producing greater sunflower seed yields varying from 22% to 28% compared to farmers’ practice of flat-bed sowing. Greater seed yield with resource conservation is attributed to higher head diameter with greater head weight and seed weight per plant over flat-bed sowing. Nutrient management as farmers practice INM1 (15 kg N ha−1 + 15 kg P2O5 ha−1 + 1.0 t farmyard manure ha−1) with Azospirillum seed treatment (INM2) produced 5–6% higher seed yield, whereas recommended rate of nutrients (40 kg N ha−1 + 40 kg P2O5 ha−1 + 2.0 t farmyard manure ha−1) with Azospirillum seed treatment (INM3) produced 13–16% greater seed yield both at research farm and farmers’ fields over INM1.

Abstract:
Abdominal hysterectomy, the procedure by which almost 90% of hysterectomies are currently being done. Laparoscopicassisted vaginal hysterectomy has been introduced as an alternative to abdominal hysterectomy, and is thought to allow a more rapid return tonormal activity. Laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy has less postoperative morbidity and quicker recovery than abdominalhysterectomy. Objective: To compare the laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy with total abdominal hysterectomy in term of operativetime, per operative blood loss and post-operative wound infection. Study Design: Randomized trial. Setting: This study was carried out in thedepartment of obstetrics and gynaecology, Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore. Period: Six months (15th September, 2008 to 15th March 2009).Patients and methods: Eighty patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected for this study. Patients were equally divided in two groups;group A (laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy) and group B (total abdominal hysterectomy). Operative time (in minutes), blood loss (inml) as estimated and post-operative wound infection was assessed by presence or absence of wound discharge, redness and edema aroundthe incision on 3rd, 5th and 7th post-operative day. Results: The mean ages of women in group A was 49.13+4.26 and 45.68+4.54 years ingroup B. The maximum number of parity between 3-4 was 19 in group A and 20 in group B. Mean weights of cases in group A was 65.60+10.45kilograms and 70.77+15.59 kilograms in groups B. The per-operative time in group A was 105.13+6.55 minutes and 83.38+14.82 minutes ingroup B. The mean blood loss in group A was 178.0+43.51 ml and 228.25+72.49 ml in group B. The wound discharge was not found in group A,while in group B, 4 cases (10%) on 3rd post-operative day, 6 cases (15%) on 5th post-operative day and 11 cases 27.5% on 7th post-operative.Conclusions: Laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy has a quicker post-operative recovery but at the expense of a bit long duration ofsurgery. Laparoscopic vaginal assisted hysterectomy is a feasible option in a selected group of patients who would otherwise require anabdominal hysterectomy. The drug requirement to control pain and level of pain experienced by patients were also significantly less.

Abstract:
SUMMARYMycobacterium aviumsp.avium(MAA),M. aviumsp.hominissuis(MAH), andM. aviumsp.paratuberculosis(MAP) are the main members of theM. aviumcomplex (MAC) causing diseases in several hosts. The aim of this study was to describe the genetic diversity of MAC isolated from different hosts. Twenty-six MAH and 61 MAP isolates were recovered from humans and cattle, respectively. GenoType CM®and IS1311-PCR were used to identifyMycobacteriumspecies. The IS901-PCR was used to differentiate between MAH and MAA, while IS900-PCR was used to identify MAP. Genotyping was performed using a mycobacterial interspersed repetitive-unit-variable-number tandem-repeat (MIRU-VNTR) scheme (loci: 292, X3, 25, 47, 3, 7, 10, 32) and patterns (INMV) were assigned according to the MAC-INMV database (http://mac-inmv.tours.inra.fr/). Twenty-two (22/26, 84·6%) MAH isolates were genotyped and 16 were grouped into the following, INMV 92, INMV 121, INMV 97, INMV 103, INMV 50, and INMV 40. The loci X3 and 25 showed the largest diversity (D: 0·5844), and the global discriminatory index (Hunter and Gaston discriminatory index, HGDI) was 0·9300. MAP (100%) isolates were grouped into INMV 1, INMV 2, INMV 11, INMV 8, and INMV 5. The HGDI was 0·6984 and loci 292 and 7 had the largestD(0·6980 and 0·5050). MAH presented a higherDwhen compared with MAP. The MIRU-VNTR was a useful tool to describe the genetic diversity of both MAH and MAP as well as to identify six new MAH patterns that were conveniently reported to the MAC-INMV database. It was also demonstrated that, in the geographical region studied, human MAC cases were produced by MAH as there was no MAA found among the human clinical samples.

Magba, Elizabeth Ann. "The INFL constituent in the Mundani language." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1995. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29535/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is a syntactic study of the Inflectional constituent (INFL) in Mundani, a Grassfields Bantu language of the Mbam-Nkam subgroup, spoken in the S.W. Province of the Republic of Cameroon. Chapter 1 briefly introduces the Mundani language and people; chapter 2 summarizes relevant aspects of the modular system of Universal Grammar known as Government and Binding (GB) theory that forms the basic theoretical framework of the study. In order to place the INFL constituent within its wider syntactic context, chapters 3 and A outline Mundani clause structure, including interrogatives, negation, and interesting deviations from basic SVO word order in Topic and Focus constructions. The INFL constituent itself is introduced in chapter 5, with two possibilities for syntactic analysis: (i) as a single split constituent; (ii) as two separate syntactic categories: TENSE projecting to TP, and AQR projecting to AgrP. The evidence favours the second approach, which is adopted as a basis for discussion. Chapters 6 and 7 detail the content and syntactic properties of the category TENSE, including the licensing of nodes in complex TENSE constituents composed of several elements; the content and syntax of the category AGP are dealt with in chapters 8 and 9. In the case of AGR, two distinct approaches can be adopted: one based on a GB account of Switch Reference (SR) languages; the other in terms of Control Theory. Although the latter offers a more satisfactory account of AGR in this instance, the fact that both approaches can be applied to the Mundani data provides insights into the parallelisms between SR and Control: notably, the binding relationships between two INFL components, the links existing between INFL, its Spec (subject) position and COMP, and the obligatory subject control resulting from these relationships. The concluding chapter 10 summarizes evidence to show that INFL is not a single functional category, but rather a complex of different kinds of functional category, each of which forms the head X of its own XP projection. Two problems remain partially unresolved. Firstly, there are difficulties in accounting satisfactorily for the "spread" of imperfective marking across "complex TENSE" and a following main verb. Secondly, the proposed analysis of Mundani INFL is an obstacle to a coherent account of realis/irrealis modal marking, which falls under either TENSE or AGR across three different construction types.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the framework of Government-Binding Theory, this thesis argues that the Germanic languages, including German and related languages, should be analyzed as having INFL-second underlying work order. Contrary to traditional generative treatments of the so-called "verb-second" (V2) phenomenon, it is claimed here, in light of certain subtle asymmetries, that the final target site of the moved verb is INFL (I$ sp0)$ in sentences with pre-verbal subjects and COMP (C$ sp0)$ in those with pre-verbal non-subjects.
It is further maintained that an analysis, as modified and extended in the thesis, in which verb movement is triggered by the Empty Category Principle (ECP) is superior, on both conceptual and empirical grounds, to other theories advanced by generativists to date. A wide variety of clause types in the modern Germanic languages, including in particular German V2 complements and Icelandic infinitival complements, are examined, the final chapter being devoted to a proposal concerning German "parentheticals".

Due to the worldwide trend of internationalization of higher education, in 2011 the Brazilian government launched Science Without Borders (SwB), a federal program that aimed to qualify national science through student mobility. As a result of the large number of students being sent abroad, foreign language training became essential to the success of the program. In order to ensure the training of English-speaking students and ensure that they could study in English-speaking universities, English without Borders (EwB) was created with three main actions: application of proficiency tests, online and face-to-face courses. It is known that the English language is understood as a lingua franca by participating in different discursive spheres, economy, politics, and business, therefore, the current English language courses should prepare students for the complexity of language and its usage. In this way, our objective is to investigate how the courses work and how the SwB candidates are trained to use the English language in a foreign study context. Since the advent of globalization and the emergence of a vast English teaching industry, language has gained a utilitarian connotation and has come to be understood as a consumer good submissive to the laws of the labor market. In light of these findings, we analyzed the official and proposed documents of the EwB to understand the governmental proposal, we applied a questionnaire to the coordinators of the on-site courses and we, discursively, analyzed the media publications about the programs. With the linking of the different methods used in the research, we sought to explain EwB's submission to the SwB agenda and interests and, as a result, the political-social place in which the program was inserted in the face of the challenges brought by the internationalization of higher education.
