Full textThe PhD thesis deals with the issue of information use in the public sector. Building on (bounded) rationality theories and (public) management studies focusing on mechanisms through which information is identified, gathered and used in decision making processes, the thesis analysed what happens in Italian Municipalities, in the field of social care policies. Three different situations are analysed: public presentation of social care policies; social care strategic plans; wicked problems resolutions and trade off discussion. The thesis shows that information is used to present public strategies through rationality or by building consensus towards innovation in contents, governance and context of social care policies. In the case of strategic plans, information is often only presented or used instrumentally. In the case of trade-offs and wicked situation information is used both in a managerial perspective and in a political fashion so to build consensus and motivation for action.

Full textDespite firm’s evaluation is still largely dominated by quantitative financial data, disclosing qualitative information about intangible assets is expected to enable a more precise evaluation of a company’s business thus reducing the information asymmetry between the firm and its stakeholders. The issue is particularly relevant when companies go public. In fact, IPOs provide a context in which information asymmetry is abnormally high: companies issuing IPOs are less known to investors and analysts because they are still new in the market, leading to greater uncertainty about their prospects. The disclosure of intellectual capital in an IPO prospectus thus provides an important opportunity to close this gap in information asymmetry, potentially lowering the cost of capital. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects produced by the intellectual capital information disclosed in the IPO prospectuses on the IPO performance. Content analysis is conducted on a sample of 74 IPO prospectuses of firms listed on Borsa Italiana between 2004 and 2014. The 87 evaluated variables are processed by principal component analysis, and the component revealed by the PCA are used as independent variables in two series of regressions, in order to study the effects of such elements on the IPO performance in both primary and secondary markets. Results indicate that the behavior of primary market investors is sensible to the information concerning human resources, while secondary market investors are sensitive to the information about research and development. Such empirical evidence provides reliable operative recommendation because the awareness about the IC information that are mostly interesting to investors could help firms to focus their efforts towards a specific disclosure. In fact, it is important for firms to understand that the disclosure of some of their non-financial information is a critical way to communicate their value to investors and often has a direct effect on their shares value. Future developments of this research might interest the long-run performance of the firms listed on the Italian stock exchange in order to examine whether the IC information disclosed actually rewards the interests of market investors in terms of good long-run performance of the shares they bought.

Full textWe conducted a national online survey about health care experiences associated with digital communication of prescription drugs. 46 percent of the sample (265 adults) found information about prescription drugs during their online search in the last 12 months. 40 percent of respondents agreed they didn’t find exhaustive information about risks and benefits while 52 percent agreed it helped in following their physician’s indications and advise. Among the respondents who had a physician visit during which health information found online was discussed, 84 percent received a drug prescription with only 17 percent being the same drug found on internet, 74 percent was sent to a specialist and 80 percent received a diagnostic test prescription. More than half also reported actions taken by their physician other than prescribing the drug brand found online. 20 percent respondents states that info found on the prescription drug in Internet reduced his/her trust in the physician while 41 percent states it helped in his/her communication with physician. Despite concerns about online health communication’s negative consequences, we found no differences in health effects between patients who took “advocated”/”mentioned” drugs and those who took other prescription drugs.

Full textBOSCO, DAVIDE. "ESSAYS IN COORDINATION WITH ENDOGENOUS INFORMATION." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/85461.
Full textThis dissertation consists of two essays, aimed at providing a sound theoretical investigation of the signaling role of (observed) collective behavior in environments characterized by incomplete information and strategic complementarity. The effects of both endogenous signaling and (the disclosure of) exogenous public information on the degree of coordination failure that arises from decentralized decision-making are analyzed in-depth. In the first chapter I analyze a regime-change game, where an authoritarian government can influence popular support via the implementation of costly policies. Citizens can challenge the government via a riot, whose chances to succeed increase with the unknown average popular discontent. In order to fine-tune its policy-making, the regime needs reliable information about popular consensus. Such information, however, improves the ability of citizens to coordinate their revolt. I show that public information is ex ante beneficial for those regimes which are more likely to build consensus via policy-making in equilibrium. Higher levels of media freedom should therefore be observed in regimes that are neither too weak, nor too strong. In the second chapter I study a bank run model, where the informational efficiency of a (secondary) financial market pushes into insolvency an a priori solvent institution after a temporary, non-fundamental liquidity shock. The most pessimistic investors of an open-ended fund are allowed to ask for the early liquidation of their share after receiving private information about the economic fundamentals of the fund’s portfolio of assets. Some of the assets in portfolio are sold in the secondary market to meet those investors’ requests. Higher volumes of early redemptions decrease both the current price, via a standard law-of-demand effect, and the future price, by signaling bad news to the market. Anticipating such effect, less pessimistic investors, too, opt for early liquidation, thus further exacerbating the price spiral. Strategic complementarity arises endogenously when investors’ private information is sufficiently poor. In this case, a spiral of fire sales is observed in equilibrium.

Full textEU regulations have favoured the development of certified quality schemes. Today the EC is driving the quality sector towards a new horizon; the evaluation of sustainability performance of product and organizations, and is doing it through the Environmental Footprint Methodology. At national level since 2009 the Italian Ministry for the Environment Land and Sea is promoting an intense programme for the evaluation of products’ environmental performances and for the reduction of Italian companies’ greenhouse gas emissions. One of the most successful initiative is the VIVA “Sustainability and Culture” project addressed to the wine sector. With the release of the IMELS decree n. 56 of march 2018 approving the Made Green in Italy Voluntary Scheme for PEF methodology application in Italy, and with the publication of the PEFCR for still and sparkling wine. Is clear that the direction taken at national and European level goes toward the EF methodology developed by the European Commission Assuming that the VIVA protocol may also be affected by EF evolution; possible implications linked to a future transition from VIVA to PEF were evaluated, also carrying out a PEF assessment of 27 VIVA certified products with a performance confrontation between the VIVA products and the European benchmarks.

Full textRetailing has undergone radical changes with the advent of online sales channels and the constant use of the digital technology. To face these changes, many retail companies have begun to develop new strategies and adapt their business models, in order to exploit opportunities of the new "digital world". They start to rethink their strategies in a multichannel view. The research focuses on the multichannel integration reached by a small and medium retailer; it also tries to understand which are the preliminary impacts on the overall performance. Particularly the effectiveness of a multi-channel strategy, has mainly maximized thanks to the IT competencies of the retailer (Lih-Bin, Hock-Hai, & Vallabh, 2012). The empirical analysis also highlights that IT competence is an important activator to start the information integration process, in order to share the same information through different channels (touchpoint) (Neslin et al. 2006), and to provide an integrated multichannel customer experience. So the small and medium retailers face a major competitive challenge, which requires specific skills in terms of innovation and management.
