The purpose of this paper is to introduce the book trailer as a phenomenon and method of marketing. Similarities between the book trailer, the book cover and the movie trailer are examined to show how a "typical" book trailer looks and what functions it possibly has. The paper also explores the book trailer’s prospects of reaching different audiences in different age groups. It also points to difficulties in defining an audience. Young adult literature and the fantasy genre are linked to the book trailer and examples are given on how authors and publishers can establish relationships with readers through the Internet. General guidelines are given for what should be considered to appeal to as many potential readers as possible when a book trailer is being used or designed. The book trailer's ability to reach young, reluctant readers, who have given up on reading to the benefit of image based storytelling like movies and computer games, are explored. The conclusion highlights the advantages of promoting books with audio and video.

Full textToday, there is a certain lack of knowledge on how sound can be utilized in systems to enhance the user experience among systems developers and many developers have a skeptical outlook on the usability of sound. Auditory display is an umbrella term for an array of different techniques that utilize sound as a medium to communicate different sorts of information and data from the system to the user. As much of the research revolving around auditory display has the development of accessibility tools for visually impaired as its sole focus, instead of more general systems intended for users without specific needs, we see that there is a need for a literature review focused on the latter. We asked ourselves the question "how can auditory display be utilized in the development of traditional IT-systems?" and carried out a literature review where 23 articles were analyzed to identify different use cases, with the purpose of presenting these use casers in a way that can be used by developers who are interested in implementing sound in their systems but are unsure where to start. Results indicate that auditory display can be used to good effect in, among others, systems for monitoring network traffic, user interfaces and widgets and in-vehicle technologies. Lastly, we propose promising potential use cases that are in need of further research.

Full textThe aim of this study was to investigate associations between typeface design of the Latin alphabet and the Japanese writing system and nonspeech sound stimulus. Moreover, the goal was to study if the associations are influenced by the native language and the culture of a person. Theories that this study was based on included the sound symbolism and the BoubaKiki phenomenon, which shows that certain sounds are associated with certain shapes, and the theory on the typeface personality. Two onlinesurveys were created, one in English and one in Japanese. The surveys were distributed to two groups, the Latin alphabet native users and the Japanese native speakers. The questions of the surveys were the same and were split in two parts depending on the language of typefaces. 10 typefaces were chosen for the Latin alphabet and 10 for the Japanese writing system. Sound files included tones, rhythms, and the Brownian noise. Respondents were asked to listen to a sound and then choose a typeface that felt “closest” to it. Result shows a somewhat weak pattern that people associate quicker rhythm with thinner typefaces and slower rhythm with heavier typefaces. Brownian noise was strongly associated with angular and thin typefaces. Tones that changed the pitch were somewhat weakly associated with rounder typefaces. High pitched tones were associated with thin and light typefaces. The differences in cross-sensory perception between the Japanese and the western respondents were not major. However, some minor differences could be noticed which might depend on the way the study was conducted or the other factors.
