Abstract:
The aim of the public servicing is to draw a simple design of Ar Ridho kiosk at Klewer traditional market, Surakarta city. This simple design is hoped as a basic in designing the kiosk that supports kiosk revenue increasing. The public servicing method used is a stakeholder and contingency approach assistancy method. The stakeholder approach is used in order to gain effectiveness in assistancy, while the contingency approach is used in order to gain more than one simple designs. The result is three pleasant, attractive and informative simple designs. All of simple designs have a similarity in describing a pleasant and attractive kiosk, but different in describing an informative kiosk. The pleasant and attractive kiosk is described by the vastness of kiosk. The first simple design describes an informative kiosk because provides an information computer, the second simple design describes a more informative kiosk because provides an information computer and mirror, and the third simple design describes an informative kiosk because provides an information computer, mirror and dressing room. Consummers respond the simple designs. Some responds suggest improvement into 2 or 3 simple design dimension and cost calculation for each simple design, while other responds suggest to the kiost such as room widening, display grouping and on-line transaction.

Abstract:
A designer commits to a signal distribution that is informative about a payoff-relevant state. Conditional upon the privately observed signals, agents take actions that affect their payoffs as well as those of the designer. We show how to derive the (designer) optimal information structure in static finite environments. We fully characterize it in a symmetric binary setting for a parameterized game. In this environment, conditionally independent private signals are never strictly optimal. (JEL C72, D78, D82, D83)

Abstract:
As Stockholm grows, Region Stockholm have begun the extensive work on expanding the subway for increased opportunities to commute. The construction process will take several years to complete and will cause complications such as noise and vibration that are likely to affect people and businesses in the immediate area. Region Stockholm are therefore keen to reach out with relevant information to those affected using audience adapted communication. In this thesis in Information Design with Specialization in Informative Illustration at Mälardalen University, a design proposal in the form of an animated film has been produced to inform about the construction process for pre-schoolers at the age of four who are affected in their school environment. The purpose of the film is to use it with the support of a teacher or educator who can use the material as a basis for dialogue with the children. The study examines the approaches that can be used to visually guide and maintain the user's attention, as well as how sounds and vibrations can be visualized in an animated film. Based on theory and empirical data, the study results in several suggestions on how to improve visual guidance, such as the importance of reducing the number of competing visual elements. It was also shown that visual metaphors can be used to visualize things that are not otherwise visible, such as sound or time. Finally, the study resulted in a design proposal in the form of an animated film that benefits from these suggested approaches.

Abstract:
The following essay is a thesis in information design with orientation on informative illustration. The purpose of this study is to investigate, based on a given graphic assignment, how to shape an event that is a response to the great big and world-wide event, the bombing in Hiroshima. The purpose of the thesis is to explore how, in an ethical way, the way radiation can be seen on people who was on the scene. The aim of the work is to design a visualization that is ethical and at the same time easily understandable and interesting. This study is done after a graphic assignment assigned from the TT news agency. This graphic shows the effects of the radiation from the atomic bomb in Hiroshima on the population of the city and the magnitude of the consequential damage. The final design was formed by data collection and theories in visual rhetoric and cognition. Methods that have been used are a survey as well as a method for creating ethical visualization described by Katherine Hepworth, a professor of visual journalism. The results of the survey show that in order to create an ethical visualization, one must work close to one's target group. Find out what they have for past experiences and knowledge in the subject you are working on. The choice of manners also affects the feeling of images and how to interpret them.

Abstract:
The following essay is a thesis in Information Design with orientation in Informative illustration. The collaboration with the TT News Agency, which forms the basis of the work, presupposes that an information graphic about the history of smoking is produced, which occurs in connection with the new tobacco law coming into force on July 1, 2019. The purpose of the thesis is to examine how the formation of image manners can affect the historical connection to an illustration, and examine whether this can contribute to a perceived development of time. The aim of the enquiry is to explore whether it is possible to create a "timeline" without a line, using manners.   Through data collection and theories in semiotics, visual rhetoric, cognitive visualization and perception, as well as previous experiences throughout the education in Informative illustration, concept and design proposals were created. Methods used in the thesis are image analysis and testing, which took the form of an internet survey. The former was implemented to understand how the manners of the illustration should look like to create an affiliation to the stated time periods. The latter was carried out to investigate whether the target group experiences the connection between the illustrations and the time periods, and to investigate whether the illustrations together contribute to a historical development. The result of the study shows that manners can contribute with a historical connection, but the illustrations with a more distinctive appearance are considered easier to interpret. The result also concluded that object´s, such as clothes and jewelry, contributes to the understanding of the illustrations historical affiliation. Manners can also contribute to a perceived historical development, whereupon 96 percent of the survey participants perceived this.

Abstract:
Every year 1.6 billion tons of food is thrown away corresponding to one third of all the food that is roduced. It accounts for 8 % of the global greenhouse gas emission, meaning that it has a huge negative impact on the environment. In Sweden, households account for the largest amount of food waste. Therefore, this study focuses on reducing food waste on a household level in Swedish households. There is a growing interest in HCI for how design can be used for reducing food waste by changing unsustainable behaviour. In this work a working mobile prototype, FoodEd, was designed, implemented and studied. FoodEd contains information of how to handle and store different food items in an optimal way. The aim was to raise awareness of good food handling practices and edibility beyond expiry dates in order to prevent unnecessary food waste in households. In this study, FoodEd was used by 10 participants during a week’s time. Two qualitative interviews were held with each participant during the study. The findings of the study indicate that an informative design can be effective in providing relevant information for its users leading to more sustainable food waste behaviours.

Abstract:
We consider a regression model E[y(x)] = eta(theta, x) where x is a design point taken from a finite design space X. The covariance of observations is Cov[y(x), y(x*)] = C(x, x*, beta). Here, theta, beta are unknown vector parameters. The quality of the ML estimators of and is measured by optimality criteria applied on the Fisher information matrix taken at a fixed theta, beta (= local optimality). In this paper we give formulae to identify the design points which have little influence on this quality. We also propose a simple algorithm which is deleting such points and leads to a better (not necessarily optimum) design. (author's abstract)

Abstract:
All residents have an equal obligation to sort their waste correctly. Despite the fact that there are regulations regarding, for example, packaging, newspapers, etc. they end up in combustible waste anyway. Why is that so? This thesis will focus on how to design a sorting area in an efficient, informative and accessible way to make it easier for users to sort correctly. Based on methods and collected empirical data, a comprehensive picture was created of what problems exist and what solutions need to be addressed. With the help of studies and theories, a design proposal was created on how to facilitate the sorting area for users to sort correctly.

Abstract:
Today you can read a lot about Autism spectrum disorder, but most of the literature is for the people that already have the diagnosis or the people around them and some of the books come from people who have the diagnosis themselves. What we think is missing on the market today is a book for children who meet people with ASD in everyday life. Therefore we created a children’s book about ASD. We believe it’s important for children without knowledge to understand their classmates with ASD. In an educational way they should be able to read and understand what it means to have ASD. A background study was made to gain a better understanding of ASD and how to write a children’s book. A survey was also made to find out people’s general perception and knowledge about ASD. After the background study we designed a children’s book for children in the age of 7–9 years. To test our bookprototype we met class 3A and 3B of Hälsinggårdsskolan in Falun. They got to read the book and afterwards they answered questions about what they learned and thought about the book. The test of our bookprototype showed that the audience appreciated the book and that they learned and had a better understanding of people with ASD.

Abstract:
In line with the coronavirus pandemic, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) worked to develop information about the coronavirus. Some of the new information was published on krisinformation.se. The information found on krisinformation.se was generally text-based. In this essay I have worked on making parts of the text-based information multimodal with a qualitative approach, but with a special attention to those with dyslexia. The purpose is to visualize text-based information in a multimodal way with an information video. The goal was to create a design proposal that can inform and engages the viewer to slow down the spread of infection. In order to achieve the purpose, the following question was designed: How is information made available with illustrations and animations in an information video? The question was answered by collecting empirical data based on an iconological analysis of an existing explainer video. Furthermore, I created a design proposal that was tested on two occasions via interviews. On the first occasion, a storyboard was tested and on the second occasion an information video was tested. When designing the design proposal, cognition- and rhetoric-theory was of particular importance.  The main finding is that those with dyslexia do not seem to have any major problems in acquiring information that is communicated with illustrations, animations and sounds in an information video.

Abstract:
Abstract Designing products to encourage sustainable behavior during their use can have significant influence on their total environmental impact. Cognitive interventions can be used to inform users of the importance of sustainable behavior and make users aware of the resources they consume while evoking positive or negative emotions. The first part of this study investigated two methods of cognitive interventions, information (positively and negatively framed) and feedback, and their effectiveness in encouraging users to reduce their napkin consumption in cafés. The number of napkins per transaction illustrated a short-term behavior change for positive information, a longer-term behavior change for negative information, and no change for feedback. In the second phase of this study, a survey was conducted to understand environmental concerns around napkin consumption and emotions and perceived effectiveness of each intervention. Results from 295 valid survey responses showed that the positively framed informative design reminded users to use less napkins in order to save trees and was dominated by positive emotions such as feeling encouraged. The negative information message informed users to use fewer napkins due to the consequences on the environment and was related to negative emotions such as guilt and worry. The feedback intervention’s message was more informative, reminding users that napkins come from trees and the emotions evoked from the intervention closely resembled that of the control. These findings suggest that information and feedback interventions that evoke emotions can be used to promote sustainable behavior.

Abstract:
Abstract Swarm robotic search is concerned with searching targets in unknown environments (e.g., for search and rescue or hazard localization), using a large number of collaborating simple mobile robots. In such applications, decentralized swarm systems are touted for their task/coverage scalability, time efficiency, and fault tolerance. To guide the behavior of such swarm systems, two broad classes of approaches are available, namely nature-inspired swarm heuristics and multi-robotic search methods. However, simultaneously offering computationally-efficient scalability and fundamental insights into the exhibited behavior (instead of a black-box behavior model), remains challenging under either of these two class of approaches. In this paper, we develop an important extension of the batch Bayesian search method for application to embodied swarm systems, searching in a physical 2D space. Key contributions lie in: 1) designing an acquisition function that not only balances exploration and exploitation across the swarm, but also allows modeling knowledge extraction over trajectories; and 2) developing its distributed implementation to allow asynchronous task inference and path planning by the swarm robots. The resulting collective informative path planning approach is tested on target search case studies of varying complexity, where the target produces a spatially varying (measurable) signal. Significantly superior performance, in terms of mission completion efficiency, is observed compared to exhaustive search and random walk baselines, along with favorable performance scalability with increasing swarm size.

Abstract:
In recent years, the numerous advantages introduced by Building Information modelling (BIM) have led in its application on the heritage environment and giving birth to the concept of H-BIM (Heritage BIM). The resulting demand in heritage survey data processing has focused this research on the development of strategies and methods to improve the construction of three-dimensional and informative models starting from 3D point clouds. The implementation of an automated procedure is fundamental for easing and speeding up the survey data processing and one of the most challenging tasks to achieve this purpose is the problem of semantic segmentation. The research presented in this paper aims at testing already existing methods and exploring new strategies for 3D point cloud semantic segmentation on heritage scenarios focusing on deep learning and neural network techniques.

Abstract:
We present results from a large-scale experimental evaluation of an ambitious attempt to improve management quality in Indian schools (implemented in 1,774 randomly-selected schools). The intervention featured several global “best practices” including comprehensive assessments, detailed school ratings, and customized school improvement plans. It did not, however, change accountability or incentives. We find that the assessments were near-universally completed, and that the ratings were informative, but the intervention had no impact on either school functioning or student outcomes. Yet, the program was perceived to be successful and scaled up to cover over 600,000 schools nationally. We find using a matched-pair design that the scaled-up program continued to be ineffective at improving student learning in the state we study. We also conduct detailed qualitative interviews with frontline officials and find that the main impact of the program on the ground was to increase required reporting and paperwork. Our results illustrate how ostensibly well-designed programs, that appear effective based on administrative measures of compliance, may be ineffective in practice.

Full text
Abstract:
The literature that employs Regression Discontinuity Designs (RDD) typically stacks data across time periods and cutoff values. While practical, this procedure omits useful time heterogeneity. In this paper we decompose the RDD treatment effect into its weighted time-value parts. This analysis adds richness to the RDD estimand, where each time-specific component can be different and informative in a manner that is not expressed by the single cutoff or pooled regressions. To illustrate our methodology, we present two empirical examples: one using repeated cross-sectional data and another using time-series. Overall, we show a significant heterogeneity in both cutoff and time-specific effects. From a policy standpoint, this heterogeneity can pick up key differences in treatment across economically relevant episodes. Finally, we propose a new estimator that uses all observations from the original design and which captures the incremental effect of policy given a state variable. We show that this estimator is generally more precise compared to those that exclude observations exposed to other cutoffs or time periods. Our proposed framework is simple and easily replicable and can be applied to any RDD application that carries an explicitly traceable time dimension.

Bao, Jieyi, Xiaoqiang Hu, Cheng Peng, Yi Jiang, Shuo Li, and Tommy Nantung. Truck Traffic and Load Spectra of Indiana Roadways for the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide. Purdue University, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317227.

Full text
Abstract:
The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) has been employed for pavement design by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) since 2009 and has generated efficient pavement designs with a lower cost. It has been demonstrated that the success of MEPDG implementation depends largely on a high level of accuracy associated with the information supplied as design inputs. Vehicular traffic loading is one of the key factors that may cause not only pavement structural failures, such as fatigue cracking and rutting, but also functional surface distresses, including friction and smoothness. In particular, truck load spectra play a critical role in all aspects of the pavement structure design. Inaccurate traffic information will yield an incorrect estimate of pavement thickness, which can either make the pavement fail prematurely in the case of under-designed thickness or increase construction cost in the case of over-designed thickness. The primary objective of this study was to update the traffic design input module, and thus to improve the current INDOT pavement design procedures. Efforts were made to reclassify truck traffic categories to accurately account for the specific axle load spectra on two-lane roads with low truck traffic and interstate routes with very high truck traffic. The traffic input module was updated with the most recent data to better reflect the axle load spectra for pavement design. Vehicle platoons were analyzed to better understand the truck traffic characteristics. The unclassified vehicles by traffic recording devices were examined and analyzed to identify possible causes of the inaccurate data collection. Bus traffic in the Indiana urban areas was investigated to provide additional information for highway engineers with respect to city streets as well as highway sections passing through urban areas. New equivalent single axle load (ESAL) values were determined based on the updated traffic data. In addition, a truck traffic data repository and visualization model and a TABLEAU interactive visualization dashboard model were developed for easy access, view, storage, and analysis of MEPDG related traffic data.
