Abstract:
Nowadays people use social media in order to create, share or exchange information, pictures or videos in virtual communities and networks. Furthermore, followers can ‘like’, ‘share’ and ‘comment’ on other people’s content or posts. Obviously, social media sites have an influence on the decision-making process, especially in the tourism sector, which has economic benefits for the country; people utilize social media channels in tourism promotional activities in order to encourage and promote domestic tourism. Hence, this Study aims to investigate how to use social media technology in order to encourage and improve domestic tourism in Oman. Data were collected using a self-administrated questionnaire from individuals who are currently using social media sites and have an interest in domestic tourism in Oman. There are three main findings: 1) there are a large number of people who use social media technology to obtain information about different attractive places they wish to visit in Oman, 2) the majority of the respondents claim that negative experiences posted on social media about a particular destination influence their travel decisions, and 3) many of the respondents indicate that the Ministry of Tourism in Oman should utilize more social media tools such as Instagram, Twitter, etc. in order to encourage domestic tourism. This research has implications not only to the Ministry of Tourism to promote domestic tourism in Oman, but also to Omani people and tourists from other countries who visit or like to visit Oman.

Abstract:
Introduction: Social networking sites (SNSs) have become a popular method for students to share information and knowledge and to express emotions. They enable students to exchange video files, text messages, pictures and knowledge sharing. They provide an opportunity for students to improve social networking and learning processes, which promotes knowledge in society. Purposes: This paper intends to address the factors motivating students at colleges to use SNSs, to identify the factors that motivate them in using SNSs for educational purposes and to identify the most popular SNSs among students. Design/Methodology: The study uses a questionnaire in order to discover the reasons behind the use of SNSs by students at Shinas College of Technology (ShCT) in Oman. Findings: The study found that the major reasons for frequent use of SNSs are finding information and sharing news. The study also indicated that lack of experience as well as insufficient time and IT skills are effective factors of not using SNSs. Finally, the study discovered that Google Groups, Facebook and Yahoo! 360 are the most popular SNSs used by SHCT students. Research Limitation: The study was limited to ShCT students, which is considered a small community, and the focus group was relatively small. A larger focus group in a different environment may possibly yield different results. Additionally, the list of SNSs listed in the questionnaire was based on previous studies discussed in the literature review. Originality/value: This research will be valuable for those interested in the subject of social networks and e-learning. In this area, there is a dearth of research on reasons for student use of SNSs in Oman, giving this particular research great importance to understanding the way that students interact with SNSs.

Abstract:
This paper (SPE 50981) was revised for publication from paper SPE 37748, first presented at the 1997 SPE Middle East Oil Show held in Bahrain, 15-18 March. Original manuscript received for review 19 March 1997. Revised manuscript received 19 May 1998. Paper peer approved 26 May 1998. Summary The Athel silicilyte is a deep, tight formation containing light oil and dissolved sour gas. Because the potential volume is large, there is interest in early development. However, because individual wells are very expensive, every opportunity to gather information must be used. Well testing (production tests, pressure/volume/temperature (PVT) sampling, production logging runs, and pressure transient tests) has been used extensively to characterize the reservoir, to guide appraisal activities, and to shape the ultimate development. Key issues to be resolved before development are initial and sustained productivity and project costs. Production tests have demonstrated both challenges and opportunities in producing from this unique formation. Pressure transient tests have indicated that effective reservoir permeability is one-tenth of cleaned core plug permeability. The difference is likely caused by some combination of sealed fractures and the plugging effects of bitumen in the reservoir. Production logging has been used to measure the fraction of pay contributing to production. Reservoir simulation models, based on well test results, have been used to predict initial rates and ultimate recoveries for various well types (vertical, multiple drainhole, and multiple hydraulic fractures). Project costs (number of wells required) are based on these reservoir simulation results. P. 354

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing information and computing technology (ICT) adoption for Omani faculty members from a framework of Rogers' theory of diffusion of innovation. Three hundred Omani faculty members from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) participated in the study. The survey consisted of five parts: (a) an 18-item questionnaire on ICT uses and skills, (b) a 1-item questionnaire on adopter category, (c) a 44-item self-constructed questionnaire on perception of barriers to adopting ICT, (d) a 50-item questionnaire on ICT attributes adapted from Moore and Benbasat, and (e) a 15-item questionnaire on demographic and job-related variables. Descriptive statistics indicated that the faculty members overall used ICT at the "Sometimes" level and had ICT skills at the "Intermediate" level. The most frequently used and skillful ICT functional areas were Website browsing, Internet search engine, and word processing. One-way ANOVAs found significant group differences of ICT uses and skills, perception of barriers, and perception of ICT attributes in the category of adopter. Early adopters used ICT more, had higher ICT skills, perceived fewer barriers in the adopting process, and recognized higher values of ICT attributes than later adopters did. Multiple regression analysis showed the level of ICT uses could be predicted by ICT skills, adopter category, perception of barriers, ICT attributes, and the selected demographic and job-rated background variables, to a large magnitude with an adjusted R2 value of .70. The level of ICT skills was the most salient predictor. Perception of ICT attributes and the number of traditional classes taught appeared to be important as well. Results supported Rogers' theory at the macro level but not at the micro level.

Abstract:

The Oman government developed a vision to transform the nation into a sustainable knowledge society by supporting information and communication technologies to improve government services (ITA, n.d.). According to a United Nations (2012) report, Oman ranks 64th worldwide in e-government readiness, the lowest compared to other countries in the region. The goal of this qualitative grounded theory study was to explore processes associated with selected unsuccessful e-government projects in Oman, as well as the driver of failure, and generate a model with recommendations for the role of executives in government organization for successful execution of e-government initiatives. The main findings developed into a theoretical concept for a recommended leadership model for executives in Oman to use for the successful implementation of e-government initiatives. The research was guided by three research questions: “How do leadership roles in government organizations in Oman support the success of e-government projects?”, “What leadership skills do leaders need to possess to achieve successful implementation of e-government projects?”, and “What model of e-government projects in Oman could explain or account for the value of successful leadership?”. Study participants were 25 executives from five government organizations in Oman. Four themes emerged from analyzing research data (a) there is a need for e-government, (b) the e-government creates challenges, (c) challenges require a leader, and (d) a leader with particular skills mitigates challenges and influences the way to success. Four e-government essential leadership skills emerged from the study (a) determined, (b) knowledgeable, (c) communicator, and (d) social.

Abstract:
The evaluation of information technology (IT) solutions is a critical issue that needs to be paid a great deal of attention by all organizations to ensure that any adopted IT solution is executed in an efficacious manner; one that achieves the business objectives and enables the organization to transform its business operations. In today's globally competitive environment, coupled with the need to deliver services more effectively and efficiently, adopting IT solutions has become the main driver in transforming business operations and improving services. The primary aim of this research is to evaluate the adoption of IT solutions in public sector institutions, focusing on three public institutions in the Sultanate of Oman, as a developing country that uses IT in various business applications. This study is based on examining a set of success and impact factors linked to a conceptual model defined by the researcher and based on different factors and models utilized in the literature. The investigation into the context and circumstances surrounding the three adopted IT solutions follows the mixed-method approach, which combines qualitative (case study) and quantitative (survey) methods. This approach helped to clarify the situation in each institution and to identify the opinions of stakeholders across the public sector. The findings of both methods are compared and collated in order to identify the current status of IT adoption in Oman, and to provide recommendations for Omani public sector institutions. The findings of this research show that the adoption of IT solutions in Omani public sector institutions has achieved some benefits, which have helped those institutions to improve their business operations. However, many obstacles need to be addressed; some of these are strategic and are related to planning and management practices and others are technical and are related to the integration and operation of the adopted IT solutions. The researcher concludes that these barriers are preventing the public institutions from transforming their business operations and from being able to deliver the government's electronic services. This research has managed to provide an evaluation framework of success and impact factors, which can be used to further investigate IT solution adoption from various perspectives, whether on an organizational level or on a national level, in other developing countries.

Abstract:
This study investigates teachers' use of Information and Communication technology (ICT) in Basic Education schools in Oman. The introduction of ICT was a reform in the education system embarked upon in 1998 which aimed to transfer the schools from the traditional style to more progressive through the integration of technology into teaching and learning. The main focus of the present study is on exploring the influence of different factors on the use of ICT, such as the availability of different types of equipment, teacher training, learning resource centres, administration and attitudes toward the importance of the educational technology to the teaching-learning process. The study is based on both quantitative and qualitative data gathered using a variety of methods: questionnaires, interviews and classroom observations. The questionnaire sample consisted of 743 teachers. Interviews and observations were conducted with 23 teachers in all regions in Oman. Results indicate that teachers' use of ICT was low and most of them (around two thirds of the sample) still rely on traditional media tools; ICT use by Basic Education teachers was still confined primarily to laboratory settings; and teachers' technology experiences were not directly integrated into daily classroom instruction or lesson planning. Access to resources, time, training, home use and support were identified as factors that influence the integration of technology into daily instruction. Among the findings of the study are continuing weaknesses in ICT integration and the need for improved and more flexible in-service training. In addition, the study argues that the main concern of the Basic Education teachers was the lack of support, which could be improved by offering technical, administrative and suitable guides and knowledge to help them the achieve the higher levels of ICT integration.

Abstract:
In developing countries such as Oman, the introduction of information technologies is very recent and their use and effect have not been systematically assessed or evaluated. Despite the importance of this subject to researchers and practitioners, the issue of evaluating and assessing the benefits of intranet is still an area that requires further and vigorous research (Blanning & King, 1998). The main aim of this chapter is to evaluate and assess the impact of intranet on one large Omani organisation. The findings are based on an in-depth case study looking at the evolution and the progress of the use of an intranet. The case study basically examines the impact that the use of an intranet has had to date and is likely to have in the next few years on one of the earliest organisations to adopt it in Oman. The impact model presented is a theoretical contribution that can guide other Omani organisations in benefiting from an intranet. Furthermore, the impact model prescribes the factors that need to be considered when implementing an intranet system.

The banking industry in Oman is of major importance to Oman’s economy, yet Omani banks continue to conduct most of their transactions using traditional methods. A strong banking industry significantly supports economic development through efficient financial services, and their role in trying to achieve the objectives outlined by the Sultan of Oman will depend heavily on the industry’s capabilities. Omni banks will need to introduce change at both procedural and informational levels that includes moving from traditional distribution channel banking to electronic channel banking. This paper addresses the question: What are the enablers and the inhibitors of Internet technology adoption in the Omani banking industry compared with those in the Australian banking industry? Transformational e-government projects and large-scale Enterprise Information System (EIS) implementation projects have one thing in common: they both overrun their time and budget due to unclear vision and unrealistic expectations. The aim of this chapter is to report on a success story of implementing e-government in the Higher Education Admission Centre (HEAC) that is beneficial in providing an insight to both categories of projects. The case is unlike many other case studies that look at project failures; it is concerned with exploring and discussing the key critical factors that facilitate the success of the projects of both categories (Brady & Maylor, 2010). The research is a qualitative approach, and the investigation uses a single case study, with data collected by means of semi-structured interviews and organisational documents from the Ministry of Higher Education in Oman. The research findings suggest that there are three paradigms with a set of factors that impact the success of projects, namely organisational paradigm, technology paradigm, and end-user paradigm.

Abstract:
Information technology and communications have now become the main elements that move forward and help Oman in its national development process. Internet penetration in most developing countries like Oman is still low as oppose to mobiles dissemination, despite the government plans and strategies to enhance internet diffusion. Internet subscribers comprised about 2.5% of the general population of Oman. In contrast, the number of mobile holders increased substantially since the launch of these services in 1996. Prepaid mobile services and SMS were introduced in 2001 and both are currently popular with subscribers. Such fine appeal influenced many government organizations to go mobile with their services. This paper reviewed the ICT sector and the current m-government initiatives in Oman setting up the mobile services and aimed to understand the key factors to adoption and diffusion of these services.

Abstract:
Due to the huge significance of climatic changes in various fields, weather forecasting and monitoring play a big role in the day to day life. These atmospheric changes like temperature, pressure, and humidity are critical elements to be checked regularly as they can help to either plan activities like agriculture, the likelihood of rain, or they can warn and protect human life from the serious issues that can happen including floods and extreme heat. There are numerous instruments and online applications that can monitor and give weather forecasting information, yet these methods do not provide accurate weather readings at a local area but instead, they give readings of the nearby station where they receive the information. This paper gives an outstanding solution of monitoring weather conditions accurately at a local area, by utilization of electronic sensors and equipment like DHT11 [3] for sensing of the data and display those on the LCD screen.

Abstract:
As a growing global threat, cyber-attacks can cost millions of dollars or endanger national stability and human lives. While relatively well understood in most sectors, it is becoming clear that, although the maritime sector is becoming more digitally advanced (e.g., autonomy), it is not well protected against cyber or cyber-physical attacks and accidents. To help improve sector-wide safety and resiliency, the University of Plymouth (UoP) is creating a specialised maritime-cyber lab, which combines maritime technology and traditional cyber-security labs. This is in response to the lack of research and mitigation capabilities and will create a new resource capability for academia, government, and industry research into maritime cybersecurity risks and threats. These lab capabilities will also enhance existing maritime-cyber capabilities across the world, including risk assessment frameworks, cybersecurity ranges/labs, ship simulators, mariner training programmes, autonomous ships, etc. The goal of this paper is to explain the need for next generation maritime-cyber research capabilities, and demonstrate how something like the proposed Cyber-SHIP Lab (Hardware, Software, Information and Protections) will help industry, government, and academia understand and mitigate cyber threats in the maritime sector. The authors believe a next generation cyber-secure lab should host a range of real, non-simulated, maritime systems. With multiple configurations to mirror existing bridge system set-ups, the technology can be studied for individual system weakness as well as the system-of-systems vulnerabilities. Such as lab would support a range of research that cannot be achieved with simulators alone and help support the next generation of cyber-secure marine systems.
