Abstract:
The research focuses on the relationship and interlinking between the different architectural domains within the enterprise architecture of an enterprise. The architectural domains are grouped together as business architecture, information architecture and technology architecture. First, a literature review of the definitions, history, role, functions and qualities, existing frameworks, models and domains of enterprise architecture was conducted. The definitions; role and benefits; models, frameworks, ontologies and descriptive languages of the different architectural domains were then studied as background and basis. New definitions were deduced. Second, the modelling methodology, process, elements and deliverables were investigated. An integration metamodel for enterprise architecture was developed, according to this modelling methodology. The metamodel is called the Relational Enterprise Architecture Metamodel or the REAM. Third, the research methodology for the empirical research section was investigated and determined. The proposed conceptual metamodel has been assessed through a case study within three different industries each. The feedback from the case studies was used to modify/enhance the metamodel. The possibilities for application of the modified model were then assessed at the University of Pretoria. The contribution of this research lies mainly in the development, empirical testing and refining of an integrated EA metamodel (REAM) as well as the development of new definitions for enterprise, business, information and technology architecture and relating them.

Murthy, Uma. "Digital Libraries with Superimposed Information: Supporting Scholarly Tasks that Involve Fine Grain Information." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26866.

Full text
Abstract:
Many scholarly tasks involve working with contextualized fine-grain information, such as a music professor creating a multimedia lecture on a musical style, while bringing together several snippets of compositions of that style. We refer to such contextualized parts of a larger unit of information (or whole documents), as subdocuments. Current approaches to work with subdocuments involve a mix of paper-based and digital techniques. With the increase in the volume and in the heterogeneity of information sources, the management, organization, access, retrieval, as well as reuse of subdocuments becomes challenging, leading to inefficient and ineffective task execution. A digital library (DL) facilitates management, access, retrieval, and use of collections of data and metadata through services. However, most DLs do not provide infrastructure or services to support working with subdocuments. Superimposed information (SI) refers to new information that is created to reference subdocuments in existing information resources. We combine this idea of SI with traditional DL services, to define and develop a DL with SI (an SI-DL). Our research questions are centered around one main question: how can we extend the notion of a DL to include SI, in order to support scholarly tasks that involve working with subdocuments? We pursued this question from a theoretical as well as a practical/user perspective. From a theoretical perspective, we developed a formal metamodel that precisely defines the components of an SI-DL, building upon related work in DLs, SI, annotations, and hypertext. From the practical/user perspective, we developed prototype superimposed applications and conducted user studies to explore the use of SI in scholarly tasks. We developed SuperIDR, a prototype SI-DL, which enables users to mark up subimages, annotate them, and retrieve information in multiple ways, including browsing, and text- and content-based image retrieval. We explored the use of subimages and evaluated the use of SuperIDR in fish species identification, a scholarly task that involves working with subimages. Findings from the user studies and other work in our research lead to theory- and experiment-based enhancements that can guide design of digital libraries with superimposed information.

Abstract:

The need for change of direction in Software Engineering has been suggested in severalresources [Power of Models]. In recent years many organizations have focused on ModelDriven Engineering (MDE) as an approach to application design and implementation.Model Driven Architecture (MDA) was introduced by Object Management Group (OMG) in2001 in support of MDE. Models are the basic elements in MDE. The focus on MDE is onthe concept of “Everything is a model”. So far several languages, tools and platforms havebeen created for MDE.In particular, models can be developed in a distributed environment, thus once they mergetogether, conflicts and inconsistencies should be detected in a convenient way to bereconciled (automatically by software or manually by developers). This project is based onprevious works that define difference and conflict metamodels of a source model. In thisreport, we introduce the benefits of versioning systems in MDE framework. A conflictmetamodel that is generated from the input metamodel and the architecture for detectingconflicts are represented. The proposed approach is metamodel independent that meansconflict metalmodel is created for any input model which conforms to Kernel Meta MetaModel (KM3). The concept of used conflict model can be also changed regardless ofmodels. The extended idea for conflicts detection, the presented architecture for modelcode management and the tools that can detect conflicts of concurrent models can help toimprove MDE in model code management. For this report, some implementation in Eclipseplatform has been rendered while some future works are suggested.

Abstract:
Nowadays the terms SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) and event driven systems are often used when talking about systems with large scalability, performance and interoperability. In fast changing business world it is vital to have systems that could be easily changed whenever new functionality is needed. Using service oriented architecture companies can easier adapt its business process to changed business rules. Even though there are a lot of articles and publications about event driven systems and their advantages, but the system architect who decides to build an event driven system is facing the problem: how to model and describe events of the system. Obviously, that there are no popular and widely accepted methodology for event driven system modelling. The goal of this work is to develop a methodology for modelling an event driven systems. This methodology describes the metamodel for event modelling and the usage of the event model in system development life cycle. The developed methodology for modelling and implementation of event-driven information systems was used for making a model of publications portal prototype. Usage of this methodology in system design process adds more clarity, because all the events, which can be generated in the system and their types, are described in one diagram – event model. The event model elements can be used in other model diagrams, such as sequence or state machine diagrams.

Abstract:
Implementation of Web applications is a complex task since it involves requirements not previously accounted for modelling conventional systems. The Web environment possesses characteristics such as ease of navigation, hyperdocument structuring, workflow, access and scale facilities, usability, compatibility and interoperability, safety and cultural aspects amongst others. The present work proposes that modelling of information systems in the Internet incorporate the existing characteristics of modelling workflow management systems to handle structured hyperdocuments. The notation used is an extension to the UML (Unified Modelling Language) notation, which consists in new stereotypes for hyperdocument modelling and incorporated workflow in information systems. The extension proposes use of the extended diagram of activities to model the activity workflow which will handle the hyperdocuments involved in the domain of a Web application. The hyperdocuments will be modelled using diagrams of document structure, which are derived from the UML class diagrams. The navigation of documents is designed using the surfing context diagrams and access restriction associated to the use cases. Modelling is finalised by adding to the document structure all the dynamic, static and link characteristics which are modelled though the extended diagrams, as far as the behaviour and static diagrams of the UML. The modelling procedure follows the UML notation, being suggested that, in a first step, the modelling of a preliminary document structuring. In sequence, using the diagram of use cases, the activity flow is modelled by using the extended diagram of activities. After the research procedures associated to documents and activities related to the application domain, the surfing contexts and access restrictions of the use cases are modelled to evince the link components necessary to the navigation amongst documents. The use of the proposed extension to the UML notation, which accounts for workflow aspects, hyperdocument structuring and its navigation, will lead to less changes of the project development and software implementation to account for the characteristics of the implementation tools for this new environment.

Informacijos sistemos kūrimas, pradedant nuo vartotojo reikalavimų surinkimo iki IS diegimo, palaikymo ir reinžinerijos vadinamas informacijos sistemų inžinerija. Pastaruoju metu šio mokslo vystymosi eigoje formuojasi naujas etapas – žiniomis grindžiama kompiuterizuota IS inžinerija. IS kūrimo aplinka CASE yra papildoma veiklos žinių kaupimo posistemiu, intelektualizuojančiu informacijos sistemos kūrimo procesą. Veiklos žinių posistemio paskirtis teoriškai yra užtikrinti galimybę saugomų dalykinės srities žinių pagrindu generuoti IS konceptualaus ir detalaus projektavimo etapų modelius ir programinį kodą. Veiklos modelio panaudojimas gerina sprendimų kokybę ir taupomas darbo laikas, kadangi veiklos modelyje jau yra sukauptos formalių kriterijų atžvilgiu patikrintos žinios. Priešingai negu tradicinėje kompiuterizuotoje IS inžinerijoje, kur informacijos sistema kuriama empiriškai, pradedant vartotojo poreikių išsiaiškinimu, analize ir specifikavimu.
The principles and major steps of enterprise Meta-Model (EMM) based development of Activity model in CASE system enviroment are presented in this paper. The Enterprise Meta-Model represents the key concepts of domain knowledge. The enterprise processes, management functions, and their interactions are concidered as a components of the domain knowledge accumulated as Enterprise model in the knowledge base of CASE system. The formal and practical background for generation of Activity diagram model is mapping rules of EMM constructs to constructs of Activity diagram meta-model. In this paper experimental Enterprise knowledge model is eveluated in order to find out with activity diagram elements we can‘t generate without adding aditional classes to Enterprise model.

Abstract:
Hadron Therapy (HT) exploits properties of ion radiation to gain therapeutic advantages over existing photon-based forms of external radiation therapy. However, its relative superiority and cost-effectiveness have not been proven for all clinical situations. Establishing a robust evidence base for the development of best treatment practices is one of the major challenges for the field. This thesis investigates two research infrastructures for building this essential evidence. First, the thesis develops main components of a metadata-driven software architecture for the collection of clinical information and its analysis. This architecture acknowledges the diversity in the domain and supports data interoperability by sharing information models. Their compliance to common metamodels guarantees that primary data and analysis results can be interpreted outside of the immediate production context. This is a fundamental necessity for all aspects of the evidence creation process. A metamodel of data capture forms is developed with unique properties to support data collection and documentation in this architecture. The architecture's potential to support complex analysis processes is demonstrated with the help of a novel metamodel for Markov model based simulations, as used for the synthesis of evidence in health-economic assessments. The application of both metamodels is illustrated on the example of HT. Since the biological effect of particle radiation is a major source of uncertainty in HT, in its second part, this thesis undertakes first investigations towards a new research facility for bio-medical experiments with ion beams. It examines the feasibility of upgrading LEIR, an existing accelerator at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), with a new slow extraction and investigates transport of the extracted beam to future experiments. Possible configurations for the slow-resonant extraction process are identified, and designs for horizontal and vertical beam transport lines developed. The results of these studies indicate future research directions towards a new ion beam facility for biomedical research.

Abstract:
In this paper, the method is proposed for transforming UML class diagrams with OCL constraints to relational database schemas, having advantages over “UML Profile for Databases” models. The proposed method consists of two phases supplementing each other: metamodel based transformations and pattern-based transformations. All transformations are based on OMG official standards or RFPs (Request for Proposals) and are prepared for use in MDA (Model Driven Architecture) context. This means, that resulting models, created using the described method, are long-lasting, independent from platform and abstract enough to be independent from technology. This work covers analysis of the field of object – relational transformations, analysis of support of OCL in currently used UML tools, transformation rule sets of metamodel transformations and pattern-based transformations, a lot of examples illustrating every transformation. Metamodel transformations are designed to transform object models written in UML language to corresponding relational models: types, classes, attributes, association classes, associations to tables, columns, foreign keys and other concepts. Pattern-based transformations are designed for generating static relational concepts such as check constraints, views, stored procedures and triggers. Using the two described transformation types and the whole method described, one can generate full-fledged relational database schemas, have precise UML models and keep much more... [to full text]

The aim of this project is to create a metamodel from a drilling tool with replaceable inserts from FEA of the machining process using MATLAB and ABAQUS. This report contains research in drilling and in metamodeling using neural networks and the work from the design of the CAD, through FEA and simulations, to the metamodeling, excluding the optimization. The work has resulted in a framework where a base FE model of the drill with two inserts that works, but due to time issues and given high cutting speed and feed the results of the FEA and the metamodeling are not very accurate. Therefore, the optimization analysis could not be done. However, it has been shown that feed has a major influence on the inserts temperature than the cutting speed, despite the higher range of this last one.

Abstract:
This research identifies a current and future need in the realm of information systems development which has surfaced as a result of layered architectures and software reuse. An analysis methodology based upon two three-dimensional metamodels which correspond to the principal aspects of system architecture, structure and communication, is developed. Each metamodel can be viewed as having three planes which represent increasing abstractions away from actual source code. For example, with regard to the structure metamodel, the lowest plane corresponds to actual source code structures written in a specific computer language, the middle plane represents the general form of the structure available in that language, and the top plane represents the general form of structures available in any language. An object-oriented viewpoint was adopted in order to allow the expression of the relationships between entities found on a single plane of a metamodel, as well as the expression of the relationships between entities found on different planes. The metamodels provide a framework and methodology for discerning the structure and communication mechanisms employed in software source code as well as a framework from within which behavioral models can be developed.

The interpretation and understanding of large quantities of data is a challenge for current information visualization methods. The visualization of information is important as it makes the appropriate acquisition of the information through the visualization possible. The choice of the most appropriate information visualization method before commencing with the resolution of a given visual problem is primordial to obtaining an efficient solution. This article has as its objective to describe an information visualization classification approach based on Treemap, which is able to identify the best information visualization model for a given problem. The implementation of the model involves choosing components and also the architecture that stands its necessary functions effectively. This is understood through the construction of an adequate information visualization meta-model. Firstly, the actual state of the visualization field is described, and then the rules and criteria used in our research are shown, with the aim of presenting a meta-model proposal based on treemap visualization methods. Besides this, the author present a case study with the information contained in the periodic table visualization meta-model along with an analysis of the information search time complexity in each of the two meta-models. Finally, an evaluation of the results is presented through the experiments conducted with users and a comparative analysis of the methods based on Treemap and the Periodic Table.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Descriptions of data, metadata, provide researchers with the contextual information they need to achieve research goals. Metadata enable data discovery, sharing and reuse, and are fundamental to managing data across the research data lifecycle. However, challenges associated with data discoverability negatively impact on the extent to which these data are known by the wider research community. This, when combined with a lack of quality assessment frameworks and limited awareness of the implications associated with poor quality metadata, are hampering the way in which epidemiological and public health research data are documented and repurposed. Furthermore, the absence of enduring metadata management models to capture consent for record linkage metadata in longitudinal studies can hinder researchers from establishing standardised descriptions of consent. AIM: To examine how metadata management models can be applied to ameliorate the use of research data within the context of epidemiological and public health research. METHODS: A combination of systematic literature reviews, online surveys and qualitative data analyses were used to investigate the current state of the art, identify current perceived challenges and inform creation and evaluation of the models. RESULTS: There are three components to this thesis: a) enhancing data discoverability; b) improving metadata quality assessment; and c) improving the capture of consent for record linkage metadata. First, three models were examined to enhance research data discoverability: data publications, linked data on the World Wide Web and development of an online public health portal. Second, a novel framework to assess epidemiological and public health metadata quality framework was created and evaluated. Third, a novel metadata management model to improve capture of consent for record linkage metadata was created and evaluated. CONCLUSIONS: Findings from these studies have contributed to a set of recommendations for change in research data management policy and practice to enhance stakeholders’ research environment.

Abstract:
Object-oriented metamodelling as defined by the Meta Object Facility (MOF) provide a means to describe the structure of models and the abstract syntax of modelling languages at various stages in a software development process. However, MOF lacks concepts for the definition of operational semantics and there is no support for dynamic model analysis based on the semantics and abstract states of a language definition. This thesis investigates on extending the metamodelling framework with an action semantics - the MActions - to support the definition of operational semantics in metamodels and enable simulation as well as verification of dynamic properties. For this purpose, runtime models are incorporated with semantics for states, time, and properties of parallelism that allow a generic analysis solely bound to a certain metamodel definition. Furthermore, we develop the Linear Temporal Object Constraint Language (LT-OCL) to perform a dynamic analysis of execution runs based on the executable models. The semantics of this temporal predicate logic is bound to state changes of (recorded) execution traces that are linearizations of parallel changes of the runtimes model. This establishes the link to the theory of bisimulation as a second application case of dynamic analysis. Abstract State Machines (ASM) have been used to formally define the action language in conjunction with metamodels and the temporal logic. As proof of concept of the whole approach, the framework has been implemented and applied to two languages as case studies (namely Timed Automata and C#).

Abstract:

Quality has always been an elusive concept in information system design, even more so when dealing with the online-sphere. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and dissect the concept of quality and present a practical way to apply it to the design process. To do this, a quality-driven design model has been developed, focused around four crucial aspects of overall quality: accessibility, usability, navigation and interactivity. By utilizing simple and practical techniques and measuring their success in achieving quality, this study attempts to prove that quality can be harnessed as a hands-on resource, guaranteed in any design project involving a Web-Based Information System, merely by applying this model.

The results obtained are explained through models created and synthesized with the SmartPLS tool. Finally, the ePfw framework was improved by incorporating the trust factors analyzed.

Abstract:
The application of methods and technologies of software engineering to environmental modeling and simulation (EMS) is common, since both areas share basic issues of software development and digital simulation. Recent developments within the context of "Model-driven Engineering" (MDE) aim at supporting the development of software systems at the base of relatively abstract models as opposed to programming language code. A basic ingredient of MDE is the development of methods that allow the efficient development of "domain-specific languages" (DSL), in particular at the base of language metamodels. This thesis shows how MDE and language metamodeling in particular, may support pragmatic aspects that reflect epistemic and cognitive aspects of scientific investigations. For this, DSLs and language metamodeling in particular are set into the context of "model-based science" and "model-based reasoning". It is shown that the specific properties of metamodel-based DSLs may be used to support those properties, in particular transparency, which are of particular relevance against the background of uncertainty, that is a characterizing property of EMS. The findings are the base for the formulation of an corresponding specific metamodel- based approach for the provision of modeling tools for EMS (Language-centered Approach, LCA), which has been implemented (modeling tool ECA-EMS), including a new DSL for CA modeling for EMS (ECAL). At the base of this implementation, the applicability of this approach is shown.

Darbe nagrinėjama programų sistemų palaikymo ir vystymo problema. Nustatyta, jog sąnaudos šiose programų sistemos gyvavimo ciklo fazėse siekia iki 80% visų sąnaudų, skiriamų programų sistemai kurti. Pagrindinis šio reiškinio veiksnys yra nuolatinis poreikis pritaikyti sistemų funkcionalumą prie besikeičiančių verslo reikalavimų, o tokios užduotys apima didžiąją dalį visų palaikymo veiklų. Nagrinėti tyrimai parodė, kad programų sistemose įgyvendintai verslo logikai suprasti sugaištama 40–60% pakeitimams atliki skirto laiko, kadangi atsakingi už sistemų palaikymą žmonės paprastai nėra jų projektuotai, todėl turi dėti dideles pastangas, kad išsiaiškintų sistemos veikimo principus. Be to, pakeitimai, atliekami palaikymo metu, yra retai dokumentuojami (ar net nedokumentuojami visai), o supratimas įgytas įgyvendinant pakeitimus lieka individualių programuotojų galvose. The dissertation addresses the problem of software maintenance and evolution. It identifies that spending within these software lifecycle phases may account for up to 80% of software’s total lifecycle cost, whereas the inability to adopt software quickly and reliably to meet ever-changing business requirements may lead to business opportunities being lost. The main reason of this phenomenon is the fact that the most of maintenance effort is devoted to understanding the software to be modified. On the other hand, related studies show that less than one-third of software source code contains business logic implemented within it, while the remaining part is intended for platform or infrastructure relevant activities. It follows that if the most of changes in software are made due to the need to adopt its functionality to changed business requirements, then facilitating software comprehension with automated business knowledge extraction methods may significantly reduce the cost of software maintenance and evolution. Therefore the main goal of this thesis is to improve business knowledge extraction process by proposing a method and supporting tool framework that would facilitate comprehension of existing software systems. The dissertation consists of the following parts: Introduction, 4 chapters, General Conclusions, References, and 6 Annexes. Chapter 1 presents a systematic literature review of related studies in order to summarize the state-of-the art in this research field... [to full text]

Abstract:
The telecommunication industry and their suppliers form a software intensive domain. In addition, a high percentage of the software is developed by the telecommunication enterprises themselves. A main contributing factor for this situation are specific requirements to telecommunication software systems which cannot be fulfilled by standard off-the-shelf products. These requirements result from particular properties of those software systems, e.g. distributed development and execution of their components, heterogeneity of execution and development environments and complex non-functional characteristics like scalability, reliability, security and manageability. The development of telecommunication software systems is a complex process and currently not satisfactory realized. Actual research topics in this arena are software development processes and development techniques as well as tools which support the creation and integration of reusable software components (component ware). The goal of this thesis work is the support of the industrial development and manufacturing of open distributed telecommunication software systems. For that purpose, the development technique object oriented modelling and the implementation technique usage of component architectures are combined. The available modelling concepts are precisely defined as a metamodel. Based on that metamodel, graphical and textual notations for the presentation of models are developed. To enable a smooth transition from object oriented models into executable components a component architecture based on CORBA was also developed as part of the thesis. This component architecture covers besides the interaction support for distributed components deployment and execution aspects. Again on the basis of the metamodel code generation rules are defined which allow to automate the transition from models to components. The development techniques described in this thesis have been implemented as a tool chain. This tool chain has been successfully used in several software development projects.

Abstract:
Master’s thesis deals with implementation of a European standard DATEX II. This standard specifies the data format for information transmission in road transport. The road traffic is flowing streams of current information. For the work was selected network of meteorological stations, which will publish the measured data, ie weather conditions of road transport. Measured data will be available to consumers in the format DATEX II. Implementation will be operational in its entirety meteorological station from design to the actual web service that will produce data information for consumers.

Abstract:
Data Warehouse support in terms of Requirements Engineering models and techniques has been extensively provided for operational level of decision making. However, it is increasingly being recognized that there are other forms of decision making that exist in an organization. These are strategic in nature and ‘above’ operational decision making. This thesis addresses the issue of providing decision making support to both strategic and operational decision making in the same DW system. The solution starts by defining two broad categories of decisions for which decision support is needed, one for policy enforcement rule (PER) formulation decisions and the other for operational decisions. Both kinds of decisions are structured based on a generic decision meta-model developed here. The process starts by developing two Data Warehouses, one for policy enforcement rules and the other for operational decisions. In order to identify the needed information for supporting decision making, a set of generic techniques for eliciting information is proposed. This information is stored in the DW. Again, the structure of information for the two DWs is based on a generic information meta-model developed here. The two DWs are integrated upstream in the requirements engineering phase using an integration life cycle proposed in this thesis. It is argued that there is a need for integration following the problems of inconsistency and loss of business control that can occur. This is due to common information and differing refresh times between the two Data Warehouses. Further, three tools were developed to provide computer support for arriving at information for (a) PER, (b) operational decisions and (c) integrating information. This process was validated using AYUSH policies.
