Full textThe need for change of direction in Software Engineering has been suggested in severalresources [Power of Models]. In recent years many organizations have focused on ModelDriven Engineering (MDE) as an approach to application design and implementation.Model Driven Architecture (MDA) was introduced by Object Management Group (OMG) in2001 in support of MDE. Models are the basic elements in MDE. The focus on MDE is onthe concept of “Everything is a model”. So far several languages, tools and platforms havebeen created for MDE.In particular, models can be developed in a distributed environment, thus once they mergetogether, conflicts and inconsistencies should be detected in a convenient way to bereconciled (automatically by software or manually by developers). This project is based onprevious works that define difference and conflict metamodels of a source model. In thisreport, we introduce the benefits of versioning systems in MDE framework. A conflictmetamodel that is generated from the input metamodel and the architecture for detectingconflicts are represented. The proposed approach is metamodel independent that meansconflict metalmodel is created for any input model which conforms to Kernel Meta MetaModel (KM3). The concept of used conflict model can be also changed regardless ofmodels. The extended idea for conflicts detection, the presented architecture for modelcode management and the tools that can detect conflicts of concurrent models can help toimprove MDE in model code management. For this report, some implementation in Eclipseplatform has been rendered while some future works are suggested.

Full textNowadays the terms SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) and event driven systems are often used when talking about systems with large scalability, performance and interoperability. In fast changing business world it is vital to have systems that could be easily changed whenever new functionality is needed. Using service oriented architecture companies can easier adapt its business process to changed business rules. Even though there are a lot of articles and publications about event driven systems and their advantages, but the system architect who decides to build an event driven system is facing the problem: how to model and describe events of the system. Obviously, that there are no popular and widely accepted methodology for event driven system modelling. The goal of this work is to develop a methodology for modelling an event driven systems. This methodology describes the metamodel for event modelling and the usage of the event model in system development life cycle. The developed methodology for modelling and implementation of event-driven information systems was used for making a model of publications portal prototype. Usage of this methodology in system design process adds more clarity, because all the events, which can be generated in the system and their types, are described in one diagram – event model. The event model elements can be used in other model diagrams, such as sequence or state machine diagrams.

Full textImplementation of Web applications is a complex task since it involves requirements not previously accounted for modelling conventional systems. The Web environment possesses characteristics such as ease of navigation, hyperdocument structuring, workflow, access and scale facilities, usability, compatibility and interoperability, safety and cultural aspects amongst others. The present work proposes that modelling of information systems in the Internet incorporate the existing characteristics of modelling workflow management systems to handle structured hyperdocuments. The notation used is an extension to the UML (Unified Modelling Language) notation, which consists in new stereotypes for hyperdocument modelling and incorporated workflow in information systems. The extension proposes use of the extended diagram of activities to model the activity workflow which will handle the hyperdocuments involved in the domain of a Web application. The hyperdocuments will be modelled using diagrams of document structure, which are derived from the UML class diagrams. The navigation of documents is designed using the surfing context diagrams and access restriction associated to the use cases. Modelling is finalised by adding to the document structure all the dynamic, static and link characteristics which are modelled though the extended diagrams, as far as the behaviour and static diagrams of the UML. The modelling procedure follows the UML notation, being suggested that, in a first step, the modelling of a preliminary document structuring. In sequence, using the diagram of use cases, the activity flow is modelled by using the extended diagram of activities. After the research procedures associated to documents and activities related to the application domain, the surfing contexts and access restrictions of the use cases are modelled to evince the link components necessary to the navigation amongst documents. The use of the proposed extension to the UML notation, which accounts for workflow aspects, hyperdocument structuring and its navigation, will lead to less changes of the project development and software implementation to account for the characteristics of the implementation tools for this new environment.

Full textThe principles and major steps of enterprise Meta-Model (EMM) based development of Activity model in CASE system enviroment are presented in this paper. The Enterprise Meta-Model represents the key concepts of domain knowledge. The enterprise processes, management functions, and their interactions are concidered as a components of the domain knowledge accumulated as Enterprise model in the knowledge base of CASE system. The formal and practical background for generation of Activity diagram model is mapping rules of EMM constructs to constructs of Activity diagram meta-model. In this paper experimental Enterprise knowledge model is eveluated in order to find out with activity diagram elements we can‘t generate without adding aditional classes to Enterprise model.

Full textThe thesis presents the analysis of SQL, XQuery and XPath query languages that are intended for the most widely used data sources, namely relational databases and XML documents. Based on the results of the analysis, a generic query model has been developed. The model should serve to help compose user queries without the context of a specific data source implementation technology. The applicability of the model in practice is demonstrated by creating methods for search system development, based on this model.

Full textThe interpretation and understanding of large quantities of data is a challenge for current information visualization methods. The visualization of information is important as it makes the appropriate acquisition of the information through the visualization possible. The choice of the most appropriate information visualization method before commencing with the resolution of a given visual problem is primordial to obtaining an efficient solution. This article has as its objective to describe an information visualization classification approach based on Treemap, which is able to identify the best information visualization model for a given problem. The implementation of the model involves choosing components and also the architecture that stands its necessary functions effectively. This is understood through the construction of an adequate information visualization meta-model. Firstly, the actual state of the visualization field is described, and then the rules and criteria used in our research are shown, with the aim of presenting a meta-model proposal based on treemap visualization methods. Besides this, the author present a case study with the information contained in the periodic table visualization meta-model along with an analysis of the information search time complexity in each of the two meta-models. Finally, an evaluation of the results is presented through the experiments conducted with users and a comparative analysis of the methods based on Treemap and the Periodic Table.

Full textObject-oriented metamodelling as defined by the Meta Object Facility (MOF) provide a means to describe the structure of models and the abstract syntax of modelling languages at various stages in a software development process. However, MOF lacks concepts for the definition of operational semantics and there is no support for dynamic model analysis based on the semantics and abstract states of a language definition. This thesis investigates on extending the metamodelling framework with an action semantics - the MActions - to support the definition of operational semantics in metamodels and enable simulation as well as verification of dynamic properties. For this purpose, runtime models are incorporated with semantics for states, time, and properties of parallelism that allow a generic analysis solely bound to a certain metamodel definition. Furthermore, we develop the Linear Temporal Object Constraint Language (LT-OCL) to perform a dynamic analysis of execution runs based on the executable models. The semantics of this temporal predicate logic is bound to state changes of (recorded) execution traces that are linearizations of parallel changes of the runtimes model. This establishes the link to the theory of bisimulation as a second application case of dynamic analysis. Abstract State Machines (ASM) have been used to formally define the action language in conjunction with metamodels and the temporal logic. As proof of concept of the whole approach, the framework has been implemented and applied to two languages as case studies (namely Timed Automata and C#).

Full textQuality has always been an elusive concept in information system design, even more so when dealing with the online-sphere. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and dissect the concept of quality and present a practical way to apply it to the design process. To do this, a quality-driven design model has been developed, focused around four crucial aspects of overall quality: accessibility, usability, navigation and interactivity. By utilizing simple and practical techniques and measuring their success in achieving quality, this study attempts to prove that quality can be harnessed as a hands-on resource, guaranteed in any design project involving a Web-Based Information System, merely by applying this model.

[EN] The relevance of the opinion of citizens has increased in the last decade. Many government administrations have now introduced public participation processes as a necessary part of making decisions on critical aspects of governance. Although electronic participation initiatives provide citizens with access to these processes. Currently, there is no clear and accepted definition of the field due to the great diversity of theoretical proposals and the interdisciplinary nature of the initiatives. Various e-Participation frameworks and applications developed ad-hoc have been proposed to respond to a specific initiative. However, a methodological proposal has not yet been developed that covers the entire e-Participation process supported by a software tool. This thesis reviews the current literature in the field of e-Participation through a systematic mapping of the research work together with some previous relevant proposals for the area, with the aim of providing a conceptual guide to the components of e-Participation. This review analyzes the findings and groups the results in order to structure a conceptual framework for e-Participation which we call ePfw, a framework to assist in the definition and implementation of e-Participation processes. ePfw can model all the components, stages, activities and information flows that occur in an e-Participation process. ePfw incorporates a metamodel that shows a structural perspective in which the properties of the entities that participate in the e-Participation processes are specified. An assessment of the completeness and functionality of ePfwTool, a support tool for the ePfw framework, is also described and has been evaluated by various e-Participation experts, showing the results obtained. Given that there is a need to create a reliable environment for citizens to choose to participate in e-Participation processes, this thesis analyzes through empirical research the factors that directly influence trust in e-Participation initiatives. The study is carried out on the citizens in the city of Valencia (Spain) and analyzes the predominant factors that influence the procedure, the technology involved and the perceived risks and benefits of e-Participation. The results obtained are explained through models created and synthesized with the SmartPLS tool. Finally, the ePfw framework was improved by incorporating the trust factors analyzed.

Full textThe application of methods and technologies of software engineering to environmental modeling and simulation (EMS) is common, since both areas share basic issues of software development and digital simulation. Recent developments within the context of "Model-driven Engineering" (MDE) aim at supporting the development of software systems at the base of relatively abstract models as opposed to programming language code. A basic ingredient of MDE is the development of methods that allow the efficient development of "domain-specific languages" (DSL), in particular at the base of language metamodels. This thesis shows how MDE and language metamodeling in particular, may support pragmatic aspects that reflect epistemic and cognitive aspects of scientific investigations. For this, DSLs and language metamodeling in particular are set into the context of "model-based science" and "model-based reasoning". It is shown that the specific properties of metamodel-based DSLs may be used to support those properties, in particular transparency, which are of particular relevance against the background of uncertainty, that is a characterizing property of EMS. The findings are the base for the formulation of an corresponding specific metamodel- based approach for the provision of modeling tools for EMS (Language-centered Approach, LCA), which has been implemented (modeling tool ECA-EMS), including a new DSL for CA modeling for EMS (ECAL). At the base of this implementation, the applicability of this approach is shown.

Full textThe dissertation addresses the problem of software maintenance and evolution. It identifies that spending within these software lifecycle phases may account for up to 80% of software’s total lifecycle cost, whereas the inability to adopt software quickly and reliably to meet ever-changing business requirements may lead to business opportunities being lost. The main reason of this phenomenon is the fact that the most of maintenance effort is devoted to understanding the software to be modified. On the other hand, related studies show that less than one-third of software source code contains business logic implemented within it, while the remaining part is intended for platform or infrastructure relevant activities. It follows that if the most of changes in software are made due to the need to adopt its functionality to changed business requirements, then facilitating software comprehension with automated business knowledge extraction methods may significantly reduce the cost of software maintenance and evolution. Therefore the main goal of this thesis is to improve business knowledge extraction process by proposing a method and supporting tool framework that would facilitate comprehension of existing software systems. The dissertation consists of the following parts: Introduction, 4 chapters, General Conclusions, References, and 6 Annexes. Chapter 1 presents a systematic literature review of related studies in order to summarize the state-of-the art in this research field... [to full text]

Full textThis paper analyses creation of a metadata repository by implementing the meta-model of enterprise modelling methods and notations. It encompasses overviews of metadata repository qualities of UEML, ARIS, GRAI Grid, BPMN enterprise modelling methods and notations and their application in designing metadata repositories. ARIS method was selected as the most suitable enterprise modelling method because it encompasses the largest number of aspects of the enterprise activity. Employing this method meta-model, a metadata repository was created and integrated with the informational system of the company UAB „Klaipėdos Konteinerių Terminalas“ for more efficient management of the company’s data flows. With the help of this metadata repository data extracted from various company’s documents is grouped according to different aspects of the company’s activity: workplaces, departments, job functions, etc. The paper investigates creation of metadata repositories on the basis of UEML, GRAI Grid and BPMN meta-models and compares their qualities with those of a metadata repository created on the basis of ARIS meta-model. It has been established that application of ARIS enterprise modelling method enables to create a metadata repository encompassing more aspects of the enterprise’s activity. It allows to better identify changes in the enterprise’s documents and their place in the activity management process.

In addition, a high percentage of the software is developed by the telecommunication enterprises themselves. A main contributing factor for this situation are specific requirements to telecommunication software systems which cannot be fulfilled by standard off-the-shelf products. These requirements result from particular properties of those software systems, e.g. distributed development and execution of their components, heterogeneity of execution and development environments and complex non-functional characteristics like scalability, reliability, security and manageability. The development of telecommunication software systems is a complex process and currently not satisfactory realized. Actual research topics in this arena are software development processes and development techniques as well as tools which support the creation and integration of reusable software components (component ware). The goal of this thesis work is the support of the industrial development and manufacturing of open distributed telecommunication software systems. For that purpose, the development technique object oriented modelling and the implementation technique usage of component architectures are combined. The available modelling concepts are precisely defined as a metamodel. Based on that metamodel, graphical and textual notations for the presentation of models are developed. To enable a smooth transition from object oriented models into executable components a component architecture based on CORBA was also developed as part of the thesis. This component architecture covers besides the interaction support for distributed components deployment and execution aspects. Again on the basis of the metamodel code generation rules are defined which allow to automate the transition from models to components. The development techniques described in this thesis have been implemented as a tool chain. This tool chain has been successfully used in several software development projects.
