Abstract:
Recent research indicates that knowledge of words’ spellings can influence knowledge of the phonological forms of second language (L2) words when the first and second languages use the same orthographic symbols. It is yet unknown whether learners can make similar use of unfamiliar orthographic symbols. In this study we investigate whether native English speakers use orthographic tone marks to help them associate lexical tone with new L2 words? Native English speakers with no knowledge of Mandarin were assigned to ‘Tone Marks’ or ‘No Tone Marks’ word learning groups. During a word learning phase, they learned to associate Mandarin nonwords varying in lexical tone with orthographic forms (written in pinyin with/without tone marks) and pictured ‘meanings’. In Experiment 1, participants were asked whether a picture associated with, for example, tone 1 matched an auditory form containing tone 2. Tone Marks participants outperformed No Tone Marks participants, suggesting that the availability of unfamiliar orthographic symbols helped them associate lexical tone with the new words. In Experiment 2, the test involved matching an orthographic representation and an auditory word. Tone Marks participants performed above chance, while No Tone Marks participants did not, indicating that Tone Marks participants learned the correspondences between auditory tones and tone marks to some extent. We conclude that the presence of a novel orthographic feature (in this case, tone marks) can support native English speakers’ ability to associate a novel phonological feature (in this case, lexical tone) with newly-learned lexical items.

Abstract:
A registered trademark represents one of a company’s most valuable intellectual assets, acting as a safeguard against possible reputational damage and financial losses resulting from infringements of this intellectual property. To be registered, a mark must be unique and distinctive in relation to other trademarks which are already registered. In this paper, we describe the CMAD, an acronym for Conflicting Marks Archive Dataset. This dataset has been meticulously organized into pairs of marks (Number of pairs = 18,355) involved in copyright infringement across word, figurative and mixed marks. Organizations sought to register these marks with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in Brazil, and had their applications denied after analysis by intellectual property specialists. The robustness of this dataset is ensured by the intrinsic similarity of the conflicting marks, since the decisions were made by INPI specialists. This characteristic provides a reliable basis for the development and testing of tools designed to analyze similarity between marks, thus contributing to the evolution of practices and computer-based solutions in the field of intellectual property.

Abstract:
Abstract Scent marks are an important means of transmitting information between rodents, and they can be produced from several body sources. Previous studies have shown that scents from multiple sources can convey the same information; female meadow voles, for example, have three scent sources that communicate sex. However, possessing three separate sources that convey the same information is likely costly due to the metabolic energy required to produce these signals and the increased chance that eavesdropping individuals may intercept information present in these signals. In this study, we investigated if these scent sources could communicate other information, in addition to scent donor sex, by determining if male meadow voles could distinguish scent marks taken from different sources of a single female scent donor. This was accomplished with a habituation-test method, that allowed us to compare how male meadow voles differently investigate scent from a familiar and novel source of a female scent donor. Male meadow voles could distinguish between faeces and urine scent marks of a female, but could only distinguish mouth from urine and faeces scent marks when first familiarized with mouth scent marks. Our findings suggest that mouth, urine, and faeces scent marks of female meadow voles produce both redundant and distinct information. The overlap in information between scent marks produced from separate sources may be needed to provide social context, which allows receiving individuals to accurately weigh the tradeoffs associated with responding to an olfactory cue. While this overlap in information remains costly, this cost may be minimized by the different fade-out times of scent marks from distinct body sources, which may limit the amount of time information in a scent mark is available to a time period where this information is socially relevant.

Green space along road of QuickBird image was studied in this paper based on multi-feature-marks in frequency domain. The magnitude spectrum of green along road was analysed, and the recognition marks of the tonal feature, contour feature and the road were built up by the distribution of frequency channels. Gabor filters in frequency domain were used to detect the features based on the recognition marks built up. The detected features were combined as the multi-feature-marks, and watershed based image segmentation were conducted to complete the extraction of green space along roads. The segmentation results were evaluated by Fmeasure with P = 0.7605,R = 0.7639,F = 0.7622.

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health 20, no. 6 (March 15, 2023): 5192. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/ijerph20065192.

Abstract:
Dangerous goods marks are the most effective means of alerting individuals to the potential dangers associated with the transport of dangerous goods. In order to gain a better understanding of how dangerous goods marks convey risk information, the cognitive processing of dangerous goods marks was examined by measuring event-related potentials (ERPs). We recruited 23 participants, and their ERP data were recorded. We discovered that the dangerous goods marks elicited a larger P200 amplitude and a smaller N300 amplitude, indicating that, compared to other marks, the dangerous goods marks exhibited stronger warning information and drew more attention from the subjects. Simultaneously, dangerous goods marks elicited insufficient emotional arousal in individuals. Therefore, these findings suggest that the designs of dangerous goods marks need to be improved, such as improving the graphic consistency. Changes in ERP patterns can be used to measure the risk perception level of dangerous goods marks, which can be used as an accurate indicator of the effectiveness of warning sign design. In addition, this study provides a theoretical foundation for the cognitive understanding mechanism of dangerous goods marks.

Schollweck, Marlene, and Alena Heidelberger. "Understanding Certification Marks : A qualitative study on the influence of semiotics on consumers information processing of grocery certification marks." Thesis, Högskolan i Jönköping, Internationella Handelshögskolan, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-43935.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: In the food market, certification marks are considered to give guidance and orientation. This specific market is constantly growing in its product range, which causes a choice overload for the consumer. At the same time, anincreasing differentiation of customer’s needs and demands exists. This increase requires information about the product and led to the development of further certification marks. Thus, it has come to a profusion of certification marks which results in a loss of information value for the consumer and ultimately in a deficient information process and understanding of the certification marks. Purpose: This study investigates the influence of semiotics in the information processing of certification marks. Further insight into the final stage of the consumers’understanding of certification marks is given, in order to reveal semiotics as a communication medium on certification marks. Furthermore, the study aims todraw attention to the current deficiency of the certification marks’ informationprocess and provides improvement measures. Method: An abductive research approach with an interpretivism philosophy was chosen to analyze the collected data. The exploratory study used a total of 17 semi- structured interviews, which were divided into three different modules. The firstmodule shortly investigated a consumer’s general grocery buying behavior andtheir understanding of certification marks. The following modules were basedon the information process. The second module looked at a consumer’sabsorption capacity of certification marks and the third module was divided intothree further themes that explored a consumer’s associations with semiotics. Conclusion: A lack of understanding certification marks was identified in the study, which is based on a deficient information process of the consumer. The first deficiency was detected between the sensory register and short-term memory showing that consumers have a limited absorption capacity for semiotics in certification marks. A further deficiency, found in the short-term memory, reveals that issue scope associations must align with the semiotics used in certification marks in order to be understood. Additionally, the product of the certification mark influences the information process. Finally, it can be said that semiotics play a key role in understanding certification marks as they strongly influence aconsumer’s information processing.

Buchanan, J. Paul. "Information Structures in Notated Music: Statistical Explorations of Composers' Performance Marks in Solo Piano Scores." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc849733/.

Full text
Abstract:
Written notation has a long history in many musical traditions and has been particularly important in the composition and performance of Western art music. This study adopted the conceptual view that a musical score consists of two coordinated but separate communication channels: the musical text and a collection of composer-selected performance marks that serve as an interpretive gloss on that text. Structurally, these channels are defined by largely disjoint vocabularies of symbols and words. While the sound structures represented by musical texts are well studied in music theory and analysis, the stylistic patterns of performance marks and how they acquire contextual meaning in performance is an area with fewer theoretical foundations. This quantitative research explored the possibility that composers exhibit recurring patterns in their use of performance marks. Seventeen solo piano sonatas written between 1798 and 1913 by five major composers were analyzed from modern editions by tokenizing and tabulating the types and usage frequencies of their individual performance marks without regard to the associated musical texts. Using analytic methods common in information science, the results demonstrated persistent statistical similarities among the works of each composer and differences among the work groups of different composers. Although based on a small sample, the results still offered statistical support for the existence of recurring stylistic patterns in composers' use of performance marks across their works.

Kim, Eungi. "Implications of Punctuation Mark Normalization on Text Retrieval." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2013. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500160/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigated issues related to normalizing punctuation marks from a text retrieval perspective. A punctuated-centric approach was undertaken by exploring changes in meanings, whitespaces, words retrievability, and other issues related to normalizing punctuation marks. To investigate punctuation normalization issues, various frequency counts of punctuation marks and punctuation patterns were conducted using the text drawn from the Gutenberg Project archive and the Usenet Newsgroup archive. A number of useful punctuation mark types that could aid in analyzing punctuation marks were discovered. This study identified two types of punctuation normalization procedures: (1) lexical independent (LI) punctuation normalization and (2) lexical oriented (LO) punctuation normalization. Using these two types of punctuation normalization procedures, this study discovered various effects of punctuation normalization in terms of different search query types. By analyzing the punctuation normalization problem in this manner, a wide range of issues were discovered such as: the need to define different types of searching, to disambiguate the role of punctuation marks, to normalize whitespaces, and indexing of punctuated terms. This study concluded that to achieve the most positive effect in a text retrieval environment, normalizing punctuation marks should be based on an extensive systematic analysis of punctuation marks and punctuation patterns and their related factors. The results of this study indicate that there were many challenges due to complexity of language. Further, this study recommends avoiding a simplistic approach to punctuation normalization.

Abstract:
The cup marks are the most common form of rock art in Scandinavia and they have been dated from the Mesolithic to the Migration period. In Sweden they are mostly found in the southern parts of the country. They are believed to generally have been made by permanently resident agrarian people from the Bronze age. The question about the cup marks origin and purpose is one of the unanswered questions in Scandinavian rock art research, which this essay has had the goal to answer with a holistic, statistical analysis based on all the registered cup marks in Sweden. Furthermore, the cup marks have been investigated in correlation with other ancient remains to see if there are patterns in the landscape that could indicate the cup marks purpose. The analysis confirmed that most of the cup marks probably where made by a permanent resident agrarian people on land mostly close to water, and that there seems to have been central places in the south of Sweden where different ancient remains have been made in clusters. No uniform meaning about the cup marks could be found with this method, but the research showed that with more detailed research about cup mark sites combined with a wider perspective about the entire cup marks placings in the landscape, new research will probably be able to get closer to an answer about the cup marks purpose and use in the Norse landscape.

Abstract:
AbstractComputer-based education relies on information systems to support teaching and learning processes. These systems store trace data about the interaction of the learners with their different functionalities. Process mining techniques have been used to evaluate these traces and provide insights to instructors on the behavior of students. However, an analysis of students behavior on solving open-questioned examinations combined with the marks they received is still missing. This analysis can support the instructors not only on improving the design of future edition of the course, but also on improving the structure of online and physical evaluations. In this paper, we use process mining techniques to evaluate the behavioral patterns of students solving computer-based open-ended exams and their correlation with the grades. Our results show patterns of behavior associated to the marks received. We discuss how these results may support the instructor on elaborating future open question examinations.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the history of the idea that the shapes, names, and sounds of the ṭeʿamim convey information about biblical narratives, including twists and turns in the plot, the thoughts and motivations of the characters, and the way direct speech was delivered. This exegetical technique is examined first by enquiring into its relationship with the midrashic method of deriving such information from the graphic features of the consonantal text of the Hebrew Bible. Turning to the approach of Tobias ben Eliezer, Joseph ibn Caspi, and Baḥya ben Asher, attention is focused on interpretations of unusual and irregular cantillation marks, including the shalshelet, according to the principles of derash. Finally, examples from the commentaries of Moses Alsheikh of Safed are examined to show how sixteenth-century Sephardi interpreters treated the Masoretic system of accentuation more broadly as a source of information concerning biblical narratives.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the role of trade marks in the creation of brand portfolios online, including internet addresses or domain names. It first provides an overview of branding and trade marks in the global business environment, trade mark characteristics, and the distinction between registered and unregistered trade marks, and then looks at domain names as address tools and brand identifiers. The chapter also considers early disputes over rightful ownership of trade marks and domain names, examining the development of cybersquatting case law before the UK and US courts. It discusses the allocation of new generic top-level domains under the New gTLD procedure and examines the legal safeguards for trade mark holders under the procedure. The primary focus of the chapter is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy and its domestic counterpart in the UK, the Nominet Dispute Resolution Service.

Abstract:
For injection molding, knock-out pin will leave ejector marks on the parts of product. While making micro-structured components, the pin for normal ejector system is usually bigger than the micro-structured one. It would leave marks while part ejection process and it would even destroy the exterior of micro-structured components sometimes. In order to avoid this situation, this research is to design a Langevin transducer using the theory of Smooth Impact Drive Mechanism (SIDM) as a linear actuator. The dimensions of the Langevin piezoelectric actuator was determined using the Taguchi method to set the first and third minimum impedance frequency ratio at nearly 1:2. The mold equipped with the double layer Langevin transducer could demold the parts without knock-out pin in the plastic injection molding process.

Abstract:

Computer vision has become an effective way to collect the information of traffic load, which is crucial for bridge statistical analysis, safety evaluation, and maintenance strategies. To obtain the information of vehicles such as position and wheelbase, the location and orientation of the camera should be calibrated in advance, but the calibration needs measurement and sometimes is difficult to implement because of heavy traffic flow. Therefore, this paper proposes a camera calibration method using plane marks on the pavement without measurement. The plane marks are designed to be convenient and economical for construction so any bridge or road with a potential demand of vehicle monitoring can consider to prepare such marks on the pavement. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified through computer simulation and a model test.

Full text
Abstract:
The marks left in the seabed by the commercial anchoring process can be seen as linear features in high-resolution multibeam bathymetry data. These features have been digitized to polylines for individual marks and polygons for anchor scour zones for British Columbia's (BC) commercial anchorages. They are made available via the Federal Geospatial Platform (FGP) for use in a Geographical Information System (GIS). This feature dataset is complete for published BC commercial anchorages and the multibeam bathymetry data available in 2021. It does not represent features produced since the collection of each multibeam bathymetry survey nor any features infilled since. The data are intended to be used for scientific research to better understand the cumulative impacts to the seabed from commercial anchoring at a 1:5000 scale or greater.

Fagerheim White, Ellen-Louisa, Mervi Honkatukia, Jaana Peippo, and Maria Kjetså. Equines in the Nordics – History, Status and Genetics. The Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen), June 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.53780/flkb7985.

Full text
Abstract:
With roots as far as the Bronze age, equines have played an invaluable role in history, both with regards to agriculture and forestry, warfare, transportation and leisure, and therefore hold important cultural significance in the Nordics. The link between horses and the welfare benefits of their caregivers makes the species an important part of society as well. Since the agricultural and industrial revolution, the equine sector has been influenced by a range of challenges due to the dramatic change in the role of horses in society, especially for the Nordic native breeds. However, as society adapts and finds new ways to use and protect them, there is a hope for the future. Although there has been cooperation between the Nordic countries in the horse sector, a collective report of the status of all the Nordic countries has been missing. This report marks a start for this type of effort by considering both commercial and native breeds. Further, it comprises the horse sector in the Nordics, with a special focus on the native horse breeds and the possibilities they carry for environmental sustainability, their socio-economic importance, their genetics as well as their risk status. The report further evaluates the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) maintained and developed by FAO as a tool for gathering information about the development and current status of the native breeds. The goal of this report is to identify knowledge gaps and areas of improvement for the Nordic equine sector and the collected data of the native horse breeds. One of the biggest challenges has been to find validated information sources for the population numbers of the breeds in each country – there are varying estimates for both commercial and native breeds. The numbers have significant impact for the determination of managing strategies of the populations. Reports for each of the countries (Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) are presented, and depict the current role of horses, breeding, population development and economic values of the equine sector are listed in each of the country-reports. The information in the country reports were derived from a questionnaire and by using DAD-IS.

Bäumler, Maximilian, and Matthias Lehmann. Generating representative test scenarios: The FUSE for Representativity (fuse4rep) process model for collecting and analysing traffic observation data. TU Dresden, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.26128/2024.2.

Full text
Abstract:
Scenario-based testing is a pillar of assessing the effectiveness of automated driving systems (ADSs). For data-driven scenario-based testing, representative traffic scenarios need to describe real road traffic situations in compressed form and, as such, cover normal driving along with critical and accident situations originating from different data sources. Nevertheless, in the choice of data sources, a conflict often arises between sample quality and depth of information. Police accident data (PD) covering accident situations, for example, represent a full survey and thus have high sample quality but low depth of information. However, for local video-based traffic observation (VO) data using drones and covering normal driving and critical situations, the opposite is true. Only the fusion of both sources of data using statistical matching can yield a representative, meaningful database able to generate representative test scenarios. For successful fusion, which requires as many relevant, shared features in both data sources as possible, the following question arises: How can VO data be collected by drones and analysed to create the maximum number of relevant, shared features with PD? To answer that question, we used the Find–Unify–Synthesise–Evaluation (FUSE) for Representativity (FUSE4Rep) process model. We applied the first (“Find”) and second (“Unify”) step of this model to VO data and conducted drone-based VOs at two intersections in Dresden, Germany, to verify our results. We observed a three-way and a four-way intersection, both without traffic signals, for more than 27 h, following a fixed sample plan. To generate as many relevant information as possible, the drone pilots collected 122 variables for each observation (which we published in the ListDB Codebook) and the behavioural errors of road users, among other information. Next, we analysed the videos for traffic conflicts, which we classified according to the German accident type catalogue and matched with complementary information collected by the drone pilots. Last, we assessed the crash risk for the detected traffic conflicts using generalised extreme value (GEV) modelling. For example, accident type 211 was predicted as happening 1.3 times per year at the observed four-way intersection. The process ultimately facilitated the preparation of VO data for fusion with PD. The orientation towards traffic conflicts, the matched behavioural errors and the estimated GEV allowed creating accident-relevant scenarios. Thus, the model applied to VO data marks an important step towards realising a representative test scenario database and, in turn, safe ADSs.

Extended Country Program Evaluation Costa Rica 2015-2022. Inter-American Development Bank, March 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0005672.

Full text
Abstract:
This document presents the evaluation conducted by the Office of Evaluation and Oversight (OVE) of the Country Program of the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDBG) with Costa Rica from 2015 to 2022, spanning two strategic planning periods. This marks the sixth independent evaluation conducted by OVE of the IDB Group's program in Costa Rica. Previous evaluations covered the periods 1990-2001, 2002-2006; 2006-2010, 2011-2014, and 2015-2018. This evaluation examines the Bank's relationship with Costa Rica over an extended period. As outlined in the OVE Country Products Protocol, Extended Country Program Evaluations (XCPE), such as this one, are independent assessments of the last two country strategies and the corresponding Country Program to evaluate their relevance, effectiveness, and sustainability. XCPEs focus on both accountability and learning, aiming to provide assessments to the Board of Executive Directors and the Management of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and IDB Invest of the IDB Group's performance in the country and its Country Program. They also aim to share lessons learned to inform the Bank's future support, particularly in the context of the upcoming Country Strategy. XCPEs make recommendations expected to enhance the subsequent Country Strategy and Country Program. The Country Program evaluation examines the design, implementation, and outcomes of operations approved under the Country Program with Costa Rica between 2015 and 2022, considering the national context and relevant strategic documents. To conduct this evaluation, OVE analyzed country data, studied project documents, and conducted interviews (both virtually and in person) with country authorities, project executing units, the private sector, representatives from other development agencies, and IDB Group staff at the Country Office and Headquarters. Additionally, OVE conducted a mission to the country in June 2023. OVE appreciates the participation and collaboration of these counterparts, which enabled a rich exchange of information and reasonable access to verify the program's outcomes.

Blackman, Allen, and Bridget Hoffmann. Diminishing Returns: Nudging Covid-19 Prevention Among Colombian Young Adults. Inter-American Development Bank, April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003223.

Full text
Abstract:
Until a vaccine is widely available, face masks and other nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) will continue to be the frontline defense against Covid-19 in developing countries. But their effectiveness depends critically on compliance by young adults, who are most likely both to become infected and to infect others. We conducted a randomized controlled trial in Bogotá, Colombia, to assess the effectiveness of informational nudges on university students concern about Covid-19, recent compliance with NPI recommendations, and intended future compliance. Although nudges boosted concern, they had limited effects on either recent or intended future compliance. We attribute these null results to high baseline levels of information about and compliance with NPIs an informational diminishing returns scenario that is likely to be increasingly common globally. Nudges were more effective at boosting recent compliance among participants who were politically left-wing, were relatively poor, and lived with more people.
