Lentjes, Daphne. Landscape and Land Use in First Millennium BC Southeast Italy. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789089647948.

Abstract:
This book offers a comprehensive overview of landscape and land use in southeast Italy in the first millennium BCE. Using the most up-to-date techniques, it combines archaeobotanical and archaeozoological data with information from excavations, field surveys, and ancient written texts to place the relationship between people and landscapes in a broad geographical and chronological framework. It also confronts questions of food habits, the scale and organisation of agricultural production, the influx of Greek and Roman colonists, and the effects of globalisation on local and regional land use.

Abstract:
Since reunification in 1990, no issue has affected the German public and political debate more than the influx of more than 1.1 million refugees in 2015 alone. It has caused major political upheaval; in 2015 and 2016 it even appeared that Chancellor Merkel could be forced out of power. Soul searching in German society about the country’s identity and its values has also been widespread. The refugee crisis has led to major divisions. Many actively volunteer, donate money, or even accommodate refugees at home. This part of society considers it not just a moral obligation to help but also an opportunity to change and modernize society. But others fiercely oppose the government policies to let refugees come and settle in Germany. Many of these people are worried that the refugee influx might limit their own social services and entitlements and thus endanger their jobs and fundamentally change German society.

Anooshahr, Ali. Timurid India. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190693565.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter will show how the Mughals in India entered a world in which the value of Timurid sovereignty (initially crucial following the capture of Delhi by Timur) had become irrelevant, leaving behind only the traumatic memories of destruction and pillage. However, thanks to the influx of other Timurid mirzas from Central Asia, the emperor Humayun unsuccessfully tried to reclaim that legacy through the efforts of three historians. The survey of texts includes generally overlooked Persian histories from the courts of Delhi, Mandu, Kalpi, and Gujarat from the fifteenth century, as well as Kabul, Gwalior, and the Deccan from the sixteenth century.

Abstract:
This chapter debunks the idealistic notion that white Kansans were in favor of racial progress during the Civil War, when slaves took advantage of the turmoil to flee from Missouri and seek refuge in Kansas. It argues that most white Kansans tolerated the black influx owing to naked self-interest: blacks were indispensable to the war effort. By encouraging slaves to flee Missouri, Unionists, “even negrophobic ones,” recognized that “depriving enemies of their labor force would injure them economically and psychologically.” Moreover, white Kansans understood that by employing the “contraband” denied to the enemy, they could offset their own war-related labor shortages.

Heine, Christopher L. Malignant Hyperthermia. Edited by Matthew D. McEvoy and Cory M. Furse. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190226459.003.0025.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter we discuss the pathophysiology of malignant hyperthermia, identify those who are known to be susceptible to MH, delineate how best to prepare the operating for those patients, and provide step by step treatment recommendations for patients that develop MH. Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a pharmacogenetic disease. When susceptible individuals are exposed to a triggering agent, a hypermetabolic response develops. Succinylcholine and halogenated, inhaled anesthetics are triggers of MH. The MH reaction is initiated by a rapid influx of calcium ions into the myoplasm that triggers uncontrolled muscle contraction. Prompt recognition and treatment of the reaction is critical to a successful outcome.

Aderinto, Saheed. Lagos Elite Women and the Struggle for Legitimacy. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252038884.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Lagos elite women's sexual politics. Lagos elite women were the first to insert illicit sexuality into their long list of projects aimed at improving women's sociopolitical and economic visibility. Like the male nationalists, they expressed optimism that the 1940s prohibitionist regime would help curb the menace of prostitution, especially the trafficking of girls. With time, the elite women would be disappointed by the paradoxical situation resulting from anti-prostitution laws: on the one hand, they fulfilled the demand for policing prostitutes and controlling the influx of girls into Lagos, but on the other hand, they opened up new arenas for the violation of women's rights.
