Abstract:
Is the human brain shaped by our sociocultural experiences, and if so, how? What are the neural correlates of cultural diversity of human behavior? Do genes interact with sociocultural experiences to moderate human brain functional organization and behavior? The Sociocultural Brain examines the relationship between human sociocultural experience and brain functional organization. It introduces brain imaging studies that identify neural correlates of culturally familiar gesture, music, brand, and more. It reviews cultural neuroscience findings of cross-cultural differences in human brain activity underlying multiple cognitive and affective processes (e.g., visual perception and attention, memory, causal attribution, inference of others’ mental states, self-reflection, and empathy). Further, it reviews studies that integrate brain imaging and cultural priming to explore a causal relationship between culture and brain functional organization. It also examines empirical findings of genetic influences on the coupling between brain activity and cultural values. The book aims to provide a new perspective on human brain functional organization by highlighting the role of human sociocultural experience and its interaction with genes in shaping the human brain and our behavior. Finally, the book discusses the implications of cultural neuroscience findings for understanding the nature of the human brain and culture, as well as implications for education, cross-cultural communication and conflict, and clinical treatment of mental disorders.

Abstract:
Sociocultural factors have long been implicated in body image and eating disorders. Decades of data, drawn from multiple disciplines, consistently demonstrate the influence of culture on body image and eating disorders across several levels of analysis. This chapter engages the rich empirical literature on this subject to retheorize the role and importance of these contextual factors in light of anthropological and related social theories relevant to contemporary circumstances. Specifically, this chapter first analyzes and operationalizes what we mean by “culture” in body image and eating disorder scholarship, describes trends in salient sociocultural factors, and highlights the varying impacts of globalization where societies are increasingly interconnected. It also urges research that builds on current understandings by increasing collaborations among not only multiple disciplines within the social sciences but also biological and clinical sciences.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that classic Christian theological anthropology has emphasized that all human beings are part of the one human family descending from Adam and Eve, created in the image of God, yet fallen and sinful. These beliefs have been traditionally expounded with reference to Genesis 1–3. Sociocultural anthropologists, in contrast, have often prided themselves on shedding Christian beliefs. The Genesis narrative, in particular, has been the object of attacks. Nevertheless, when some nineteenth-century freethinking anthropologists argued that belief in the monogenesis of the human race was just the result of the influence of an erroneous Judeo-Christian myth, the discipline weeded such thinking out of its midst. Thus, even as it sidelined Christianity, orthodox anthropology from the founding of the discipline to the present has affirmed the doctrine of the psychic unity of humankind. This essay argues that this foundational conviction of anthropology is informed by Christian thought.

Abstract:
Research suggests that body image is significantly influenced by sociocultural variables such as beauty ideals and/or ethnicity. As such, elucidating sociocultural variables such as race and ethnicity in relation to body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is important to understanding and treating this condition. This chapter reviews perceptions of body image in BDD, body areas of concern in BDD, BDD-related behaviors, and barriers to care as they relate to race and ethnicity in individuals with BDD. Relationships between identity variables and BDD are illustrated using a case example. Modifications for cognitive-behavioral therapy for BDD are suggested when working with diverse populations. Areas for future research are outlined.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 introduces Nepal’s popular Svasthānī tradition: the goddess Svasthānī, the Svasthānīvratakathā text that Nepali Hindus recite annually, and the Svasthānī vrat (ritual vow) that is described in the text and performed annually to honor the goddess. Both Nepal’s Newar Hindus and high-caste (Brahman and Chetri) hill Hindus, Parbatiyās, participate in these devotional practices, and have influenced in different ways the many stories that the Svasthānīvratakathā contains within its pages. The chapter also enumerates the theoretical concerns that fuel the book, such as the tensions between local (Newar) and translocal (Brahmanical Hindu) influences, and the methodology that underpins it. Finally, the chapter maps out in very broad strokes a general political history of Nepal that subsequent chapters in this book reinvigorate with a focused discussion of concurrent religious, sociocultural, literary, and linguistic developments that round out Nepal’s often one-dimensional master political narrative.
