Abstract:
Background: The Chinese market is growing fast and rapidly in a high pace. Many foreign companies see the possibilities in this and are expanding their business to China. When operating business in China strategic decisions are taken by the management, sometimes without reflection of what influences the process. This makes the influence on the management strategic decision-making process vital when expanding to China, since it may reflect on the company’s strategic plans.   Purpose: To further explore and extend the research area on how the expansion to China influences the management and their strategic decision-making process.   Research questions: RQ1: Do the expansion to China influence the management strategic decision-making process?   RQ2: How does the expansion to China influence the management strategic decision-making process?   Methodology: Conducted as an abductive qualitative multiple case study, examined with semi-structured interviews with an exploratory purpose.   Conclusion: The empirical investigation showed that the management and their strategic decision-making process are influenced by the expansion to China. The influences are; rationality, decision speed, environment, politics, culture and how management view their strategy through the strategic lenses.

Abstract:
This study examined the interaction of religion and politics in Bangladesh in light of the hypothesis that the nature of the particular process of Islamization of the state of Bangladesh, leading to its present semi-Islamic status, has been a function of three independent variables: the specific nature of Islam in the society; the configuration of political interests; and the international environment. The study found that the semi-Islamic status of the state in Bangladesh achieved under military rule is a consequence more of the manipulation of Islam by the military for the sake of legitimacy and of the influence of the Middle East, particularly the flow of remittances, rather than changes in the value orientation of the people of Bangladesh.

The objective of this research is to analyze the relationships of influence between collaborative practices proposed by the Open Innovation approach, with aspects of organizational culture and organizational structure. In addition, we intend to analyze the influences of collaboration for innovations with operational performance, innovative performance and market performance. A quantitative survey was adopted, with a sample of 116 firms in sectors considered dynamics in terms of technology. Some of the results presented that customers are the main source of collaboration for innovation companies; those companies that receive govermnment incentives for innovation are less prone to the use of collaborative innovation practices; there is a preponderance of large companies in the development of radical innovations; collaborative relations proposed by Open Innovation approach with customers, suppliers, employees, universities and others, exert positive influences both innovative performance as the market firms, but has no positive influence on operating performance

Abstract:
This article deals with the controversy caused by the use of subliminal advertising, which seems to have some influence on consumer behavior. If so, subliminal advertising could transgress ethical and moral principles. This research intends to introduce and analize pertinent research on the ethical dilemma that would arise from using subliminal advertising and its influence on consumers’ decisions. First, the meaning of ethics and subliminal advertising will be conveyed accurately, this will be helpful for recognizing and understanding the presence of an ethical dilemma due to this kind of advertising, that is to say the core of this research. In addition, deontology-based advertising ethical value will be explained in order to show a possible link between professional practice and the nature of the ethical dilemma. Also, the influence of social, cultural, political and legal aspects on subliminal advertising will be addressed.

Yick, John S. "Some applications of local influence diagnostics." Thesis, Curtin University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/1094.

Abstract:
The influence of observations on the outcome of an analysis is of importance in statistical data analysis. A practical and well-established approach to influence analysis is case deletion. However, it has its draw-backs when subsets of observations are jointly influential and offset each other's influence. Another approach is local influence proposed by Cook (1986).The local influence methodology of Cook (1986) is based on the curvature of the likelihood displacement surface formed by model/data perturbations. Wu and Luo (1993a, 1993b) further developed the idea and proposed the study of the perturbation-formed surface of a variable by evaluating the curvature of the surface in addition to its maximum slope. This thesis utilizes the local influence approach to develop influence diagnostic methods for four different topics.Firstly, we proposed a stepwise confirmatory procedure for the detection of multiple outliers in two-way contingency tables. The procedure begins with the identification of a reliable set of candidate outliers by evaluating the derivatives of the perturbation-formed surface of the Pearson goodness-of-fit statistic. An adding-back iterative algorithm is then applied to the candidate set to assess their relative discordancy. Using two real data sets, the proposed procedure is shown to be less susceptible to both masking and swamping problems than residual based measures. In a Monte Carlo study, the local influence diagnostics are also found to outperform standard residual-based methods in terms of efficiency and other criteria.Transformations of covariates are commonly applied in regression analysis. When a parametric transformation family is used, the maximum likelihood estimate of the transformation parameter is often sensitive to minor perturbations of the data. Diagnostics based on the local influence approach are derived to assess the influence of observations on the covariate transformation parameter in generalized linear models. Three numerical examples are presented to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed diagnostics. The need for transformation is also addressed in addition to assessing influence on the transformation parameter.A common method of choosing the link function in generalized linear models is to specify a parametric link family indexed by unknown parameters. The maximum likelihood estimates of such link parameters, however, often depend on one or several extreme observations. Diagnostics based on the local influence approach are derived to assess the sensitivity of the parametric link analysis. Two examples demonstrate that the proposed diagnostics can identify jointly influential observations on the link even when masking is present. The application of the diagnostics can also assist us in revising the link parameter and hence the form of the model. The portmanteau statistic is commonly used for testing goodness-of-fit of time series models. However, this lack of fit test may depend on one or several atypical observations in the series. We investigate the sensitivity of the portmanteau statistic in the presence of additive outliers. Diagnostics based on the local influence approach are developed to assess both local and global influence. Three practical examples demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed diagnostics.

Abstract:
A case-comparative mixed methods approach was used to discover how faculty members’ teaching perspectives changed as they adopted an eportfolio tool (Pathbrite). Ten faculty members took the Teaching Perspectives Inventory (TPI) before and after using the tool during Fall semester 2015. Also, systems logs were collected and interviews were conducted after the post survey was completed. Interview data found that faculty members developed a broader view of the potential of eportfolios. Participants also appreciated the long-term benefits that eportfolios would have on their students. However, when use was associated with accreditation standards, gains in student-centered perspectives were minimal. The study suggests cognitive apprenticeship as a model that explains the discovered findings and provides recommendations to administrators who are implementing eportfolios.

Oz-Salzberger, Fania. "Scottish political ideas in eighteenth century Germany : the case of Adam Ferguson." Thesis, University of Oxford, 1991. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:6ef5e5b0-37a4-42b7-a58f-8c1e35cc451c.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the reception of the works of Adam Ferguson, a major thinker of the Scottish Enlightenment, by a range of German readers in the late eighteenth century. It provides a survey of Ferguson's main political ideas, and argues that many of his prominent German readers did not come to terms with them. The thesis contrasts the political realities and concerns of Ferguson's Scotland with the profoundly different political concerns of his German readers, and their often vague and inaccurate ideas of Scotland, and of the British constitution. Their documented responses to Ferguson's works are brought as evidence for a cumulative and complex case of misreception. The terms in which Ferguson expressed his political ideas can be fruitfully analyzed as a political language, a vocabulary of recognizable and mutually complementing political terms. After a close examination of this particular vocabulary, the thesis proceeds to show in detail how Ferguson's German translators, commentators, reviewers and readers unwittingly dismantled this vocabulary, lost or ignored its republican and activist elements, and sometimes shifted it into other vocabularies which were far removed from the author's political intentions. However, the differences between the individual readers are emphasized, not only with respect to their varied intellectual backgrounds and works, but also touching on their personal profiles as readers and thinkers. The thesis aims especially to highlight three aspects of this Scottish- German encounter: the capacity of Ferguson's texts to be removed from their contexts and misread; the failure of civic humanist ideas to make a serious entry into German political discourse; and the merits of close textual analysis for supporting a type of explanation, which may supplement or counter-balance other explanations, about the limited effect of "imported" political ideas in eighteenth-century German discourse.

Smith, Kevin Michael. "Soviet influence in the Third World : indicators of influence." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31525.

Full text
Abstract:
Discussion of the influence of the Soviet Union is often in vague terms. The term "Soviet influence" is usually used without concern for its clear definition. This paper attempts to deal with the notion of Soviet influence as it relates to the Third World, and to analyse the extent of Soviet influence in Third World nations. In doing this, three main questions are asked: What is influence? What evidence is there of Soviet influence? Can Soviet influence be measured? First, the notion of influence is defined. Second, criteria — the indicators of influence — for identifying and measuring, relatively, Soviet influence in the Third World are outlined and evaluated. The indicators form a simple methodology for examining Soviet influence. Third, the indicators are applied to two case studies — Somalia during the 1960s and 1970s, and Angola during the same time period. The indicators are: 1/ Domestic Dissonance 2/ Soviet Acquisition of Military, Naval and Air Facilities 3/ Soviet Goals and Objectives 4/ Attitudes and Perceptions of B 5/ Quantitative Measures of Trade, Aid and Personnel 6/ The Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation 7/ A Vanguard Party Certain indicators are of less significance than is usually assumed: the Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation, the Vanguard Party, Quantitative Measures of Trade and Aid, and Soviet Acquisition of Facilities. The most valuable indicators are Attitudes and Perceptions, Domestic Dissonance and possibly Personnel. The use of these indicators in conjunction with the analysis of a specific incident of attempted Soviet influence can determine the extent of Soviet influence. Analysts tend to attribute significant influence to the Soviet Union. However, often what is assumed to be significant influence involves mutual benefits and\or a lack of commitment to the issue by the Third World nation. Two factors are very important for determining the extent of Soviet influence: (1) The importance of the issue to the Third World nation; (2) The degree of conflict between Soviet objectives and those of the Third World nation. In the Somalia and Angola case studies, the extent of Soviet influence became evident when the Third World nation's vital interests were at stake. It is important not to over estimate Soviet influence, or to equate Soviet influence with Soviet control over a nation. The key to analysing inter-nation influence is realising that its extent can vary and it does have limitations.

Abstract:
The doctrine of undue influence has undergone reconsideration by the House of Lords in Royal Bank of Scotland v Etridge (No 2) [2004] 4 All ER 449. The case was an attempt by the House of Lords to clarify the law and dispel some of the misconceptions that have developed in the law over the last 200 years. This thesis will examine the law of undue influence. It will examine the theoretical basis of undue influence, the general misconceptions in the law, the impact of the Etridge case, and related doctrines of duress and unconscionability. Given the developments in the law due to Etridge, issues regarding simplification of the law will be examined. The three doctrines share much in common, and issues of fusion of one or all of the existing doctrines will be considered, and whether this would lead to a better understanding of the law in this area.

Gerard, Dubernard-Laurent Annie. "Le pré-raphaélisme en Angleterre, les arts et les lettres en France : essai d'étude comparative." Paris 4, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1995PA040306.

Full text
Abstract:
The English pre-Raphaelite movement presents a variety of aspects which have features in common with French painting and poetry. The aim of this study is to bring forward and analyze some of these aspects: for example it tries to show the similarities and differences between the "realism" in the earliest pre-Raphaelite paintings and the French so-called "réalisme" as exemplified by Courbet and some of his contemporaries in their way of portraying the sacred, people at work, and social problems. It shows how avant-gardists such as Merimee, Lecoq de Boisbaudran and Charles Blanc one looked up to British reformists - who they thought were mainly pre-Raphaelites - in the teaching of the arts and the conception of museums. It then goes on to show how pre-Raphaelite works (painting and poetry) and ideas penetrated the French cultural environment through the exhibitions and the press. Burne-Jones's impact on the work of some symbolist poets and painters is also examined. The conclusion suggests a synthesis between various forms of pre-Raphaelitism (German, English and French)

Abstract:
The author examines the composition and literary proceedings of ancient hagiographic translations from Latin into old Norse, found in manuscripts dated from the beginning of the XIIIth century. The aim is to estimate whether they are exact translations, adaptations or recreated compilations from various sources. Then an attempt is made to demonstrate their influence on medieval Icelandic saga writing - which is still hardly recognized - first on the kings' sagas and bishops' sagas and further on the literary sagas, the sagas of Icelanders

Weber, Pierre-Frédéric. "Le Triangle RFA-RDA-Pologne (1961-1975) : guerre froide et normalisation des rapports germanos-polonais." Paris 3, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006PA030163.

Full text
Abstract:
German-Polish normalization after World War II and specifically between 1961 and 1975 can be seen as a mainly ideational change through interaction in the triadic microsystem formed by both German states (FRG and GDR) and Poland in the macrosystem of the Cold War. Given the active role of non-state actors in those three states as well as on transnational platforms (Churches, NGO’s), this study tries to go farther than traditional diplomatic history. Thus it also includes an appreciation of those non-state actors’ influence on German-Polish relations out of a so called “nanosystemic” position. The main issues (among which: the Oder-Neisse line, the German question and European security) are addressed both chronologically and thematically. “Normalization” is defined as the result of shifts in the corporate actors’ identities and interests through intersystemic interaction – an constructivist explanation that could be extended to other case studies of German-East-European relations

Abstract:
Social networks, such as Twitter and Facebook, enable the wide spread of information through users’ influence on each other. These networks are very useful for marketing purposes. For example, free samples of a product can be given to a few influencers (seed nodes), with the hope that they will convince their friends to buy it. One way to formalize marketers’ objective is through the influence maximization problem, which is to find the best seed nodes to influence under a fixed budget so that the number of people who get influenced in the end is maximized. Recent solutions to influence maximization rely on the knowledge of the influence probability of every social network user. This is the probability that a user influences another one, and can be obtained by using users’ history of influencing others (called action logs). However, this information is not always available. We propose a novel Online Influence Maximization (OIM) framework, showing that it is possible to maximize influence in a social network in the absence of exact information about influence probabilities. In our OIM framework, we investigate an Explore-Exploit (EE) strategy, which could run any one of the existing influence maximization algorithms to select the seed nodes using the current influence probability estimation (exploit), or the confidence bound of the estimation (explore). We then start the influence campaign using the seed nodes, and consider users’ immediate feedback to the campaign to further decide which seed nodes to influence next. Influence probabilities are modeled as random variables and their probability distributions are updated as we get feedback. In essence, we perform influence maximization and learning of influence probabilities at the same time. We further develop an incremental algorithm that can significantly reduce the overhead of handling users’ feedback information. We validate the e↵ectiveness and efficiency of our OIM framework on large real-world datasets.

I will discuss how this relates to my approach with materials and process and will explain not only what the sculpture titled SPHERE OF INFLUENCE has come to represent for me, but also the reactions of viewers during the temporary installation of the SPHERE OF INFLUENCE at the Anderson Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University from May 5th 2006 through May 14th, 2006. I will explain the SPHERE OF INFLENCE'S function as both an object meant to evoke an awareness of what and who surrounds its space and as a metaphor of my efforts to surpass personal and artistic boundaries.

Cultivating the spatial relationship in between utility and sculpture generates my process. I deconstruct, reconstruct and assemble objects; bringing to them a new perspective that simplifies the structure while enhancing the surface and the unassuming nature of the forms. Developing vessels for drinking or pouring serves as the foundation for my study of materials, architectural foundations and elements of utilitarian objects. The functional purpose of the objects becomes minimized due to the structure beneath the surface and the constructed role of the base blurring distinctions between function and form.

Gaved, Matthew. "Ownership and influence : the debate about shareholder influence on listed companies." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1997. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1474/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the long-standing debate about the ability of investors in public listed companies to significantly influence or even control certain aspects of board and management decision taking. Much of the recent interest in these issues has focused on increased public disclosure of boardroom practices and standards. In contrast, my research shows that informal relationships between companies and their major shareholders are playing an increasingly important role in influencing key aspects of corporate strategy, major financing and investment decisions, and board membership. The research was undertaken through: an analysis of the investment portfolios of the 50 largest fund managers investing in the shares of UK companies and the ownership of 297 of the UK's largest listed companies; in-depth interviews with 120 companies, fund managers and others concerned with the quality and regulation of company shareholder relationships and information flows; and studying the role of fund managers and other shareholders in the resignations of the CEOs of 24 case history companies. The growing importance of informal mechanisms of fund manager influence and networking means that shareholder influence no longer depends on the formation of coalitions of the size proposed by Scott, or the alignment of interests through formally constituted Shareholder Protection Committees. A model of 'extended ownership' describes how effective control may pass to the fund manager with the largest, but still sub-minority, shareholding It is also crucial to understand that investment decisions by fund managers are influenced by and related to a wide range of company and investor-specific factors. These are described and the impact of their interactions on shareholder behaviour discussed. This thesis is relevant to the current debate about the public role that should be taken by institutional fund mangers in the process of corporate governance. Models of investor behaviour which assume that fund managers are a homogenous investor type or which do not take into account the key role of informal influence mechanisms are therefore of limited value.

Abstract:
Defining the difference between successful and mediocre leaders is a quest that has attracted many renowned scholars, drawing vast amounts of research effort. Yet while there are excellent theoretical explanations of what leaders should do: exhibit transformational behaviours, demonstrate authenticity, build productive relationships with followers and so on; there is still a scarcity of empirically-based research advising practicing leaders how to do these things. This study seeks to provide guidance about the fine-grained processes that effective leaders use on a daily basis to undertake the core process of all leadership activity; influencing followers. Using a grounded research approach, this study employs qualitative methods to capture the detail of effective leader behaviour and the micro-level influence processes that leaders use to create effective follower outcomes. Conducted in the health services industry with medical and allied health leaders, the study sought to answer the question: What influence methods might effective, contemporary leaders be using? The study builds on existing influence research, seeking to extend and update the typology of 11 influence tactics originally developed by Yukl and others, and which has been static since the late 1990s. Eight new influence tactics were identified, offering practicing leaders a powerful suite of potential strategies and representing a significant contribution to the field. Further research is recommended to confirm the identified influence constructs and test the generalisability of these findings to broader leader populations in health organisations and other knowledge-based organisations.

Abstract:
The use of influence tactics by sales representatives appears to be related to a number of latent constructs and factors such as, manifest needs, role conflict and role ambiguity, and perception of sales managers' power bases. However, such relationships have not been examined by researchers. These relationships were examined in this study in an effort to improve the current level of understanding of causes and results of the use of influence tactics in a sales environment. The contention of this study was that individuals in work settings engage in a variety of influence tactics, and that the type of influence tactics used are influenced by factors such as personal characteristics of the salespersons, the nature of goals to be achieved, the salespersons' perceptions of their superiors' power bases, and the nature and complexity of the dyadic relationship that exists between supervisor and subordinates.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Equine influenza is a serious, acute, highly contagious, respiratory disease, equine with characteristic clinical picture in the type of respiratory syndrome. This disease is caused by two subtypes of influenza A virus (EIV - equine influenza virus) - H7N7 (formerly known as type 1) and H3N8 (formerly known as type 2) from the family Orthomyxoviridae. The aim of the research was to compare different diagnostic methods for the diagnosis of influenza A virus in equine vaccine with different status and clinical findings. The experiment involved 61 throat. Conducted epidemiological surveys, clinical throat examined, analyzed the complete blood count, done HI, Directigen and RT-PCR test. The results showed the presence of both subtypes of the virus. Seropositive individuals are registrated in which the presence of an influenza virus antigen is confirmed, but without evidence of the presence of the influenza virus genome.

Abstract:
This master thesis compares management accounting (MA) in China and Germany. It starts by analyzing the conceptual development over time. Afterwards, it categorizes the spread of the methods and explains conceptual differences in more detail. Subsequently, macroeconomic factors that have influenced the development of MA are described, evaluated, and future implications for the further development of MA are derived. For this purpose a traditional literature review is used. The MA practice in Germany is further disseminated than in China. Moreover, German management accountants are characterized as business partners while Chinese management accountants are perceived as analysts and inspectors. Other conceptual differences in terms of MA are the data source, the overall orientation, country-specific techniques, and the organizational structure. Most of the differences between German and Chinese MA can be allocated to political, economic, foreign, educational, academic, and cultural influences. The future implications for the further development depend on each factor individually.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation offers a comparative study about the poetics of the French Symbolism and the Chinese poetry. The audacity and rebelliousness of a group of French poets in the second half of the 19th century revolutionized the poetic world with the creation of a new poetic language. This new poetic language was characterized by the symbolic suggestion and evocation, by a closer communication between the material and the spiritual, between the visible and the invisible. The French Symbolism started influencing China from 1915 and contributed to the development of modern Chinese poetry. In the meantime, it is interesting to discover some analogies between the Chinese poetical tradition and the French symbolist rhetoric, between the traditional form of symbolism and the modern form of symbolism. This comparative study focuses upon the encounter of French symbolist poetry and Chinese poetry, which developed independently until the early 20th century

During the Korean War, Chinese captors of U.S. prisoners employed an unexpected and relatively successful compliance program. The Chinese, somewhat afraid of post-conflict repercussions for coercive torture, pursued techniques of social influence to secure behavioral compliance as well as lasting indoctrination. Although they failed in their primary objective to permanently alter beliefs and attitudes, their process illuminated the success in influencing individual behavior by interpreting and controlling aspects of group social dynamics. To cope with the daily flood of lifes information, humans have developed cognitive processes to quickly filter decision-making requests according to probable importance. If determined routine, the person allows learned decision-making shortcuts to guide his response. A range of psycho-social principles of human behavior underlie this automaticity and they can be deliberately triggered, or suppressed, to increase the likelihood of generating predictable behavioral responses in an individual. This thesis includes a broad survey of the major theoretical and practical foundations of psychology, propaganda, and marketing. It identifies the psycho-social principles that most influence a persons likelihood of complying with behavioral requests and examines a broad selection of social influence efforts for their presence. Finally, this thesis concludes by assessing the ability of influence principles to secure enduring effects.

Abstract:
This dissertation attempts to illuminate the enigma of Seneca as seen in Tacitus, Seneca politicus, and his capacity at the Palace. The project thus evaluates the three most accessible sources for both how Nero would have viewed Seneca and how Seneca presented himself to Nero - Nero's childhood and education, Apocolocyntosis, and De clementia. Assessment of these sources through the game-theoretical model of signaling and signal games forms a model of their relationship, which itself becomes the thesis of the dissertation. The thesis contends that, post accession, Seneca en-gaged Nero in a didactic relationship focusing on philosophy, or rather, on his own insights into ethical decision-making and morality in interpersonal dealings. But the details surrounding this deduction nuance its interpretation. His presentation of philosophy to Nero smacks of practicality. It is opportunistic, utilizing the philosophi-cally propaedeutic nature of Nero's education; and his own contribution to the imperi-al intellect, clementia, is not convincingly Stoic. Seneca wished to be trusted for his ability to offer advice on interpersonal dealings, and to form acute judgments about other people and their actions.

The purpose of this article was to prove that the main element (ME) together with the inverter, ie the universal ME, is a functionally complete element base of one-electron nanochemistry. During the simulations of the element operation, it was proved that the temperature directly affects the operation of logic nanoschemas on cellular machines that use most elements. Therefore, research and modeling of their effectiveness is an urgent task.

Gamal, Doaa. "Social Networks Influence Analysis." UNF Digital Commons, 2017. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/723.

Full text
Abstract:
Pew Research Center estimates that as of 2014, 74% of the Internet Users used social media, i.e., more than 2.4 billion users. With the growing popularity of social media where Internet users exchange their opinions on many things including their daily life encounters, it is not surprising that many organizations are interested in learning what users say about their products and services. To be able to play a proactive role in steering what user’s say, many organizations have engaged in efforts aiming at identifying efficient ways of marketing certain products and services, and making sure user reviews are somewhat favorable. Favorable reviews are typically achieved through identifying users on social networks who have a strong influence power over a large number of other users, i.e. influential users. Twitter has emerged as one of the prominent social network services with 320 million monthly active users worldwide. Based on the literature, influential Twitter users have been typically analyzed using the following three models: topic-based model, topology-based model, and user characteristics-based model. The topology-based model is criticized for being static, i.e., it does not adapt to the social network changes such as user’s new posts, or new relationships. The user characteristics-based model was presented as an alternative approach; however, it was criticized for discounting the impact of interactions between users, and users’ interests. Lastly, the topic-based model, while sensitive to users’ interests, typically suffers from ignoring the inclusion of inter-user interactions. This thesis research introduces a dynamic, comprehensive and topic-sensitive approach for identifying social network influencers leveraging the strengths of the aforementioned models. Three separate experiments were conducted to evaluate the new approach using the information diffusion measure. In these experiments, software was developed to capture users’ tweets pertinent to a topic over a period of time, and store the tweet’s metadata in a relational database. A graph representing users was extracted from the database. The new approach was applied to the users’ graph to compute an influence score for each user. Results show that the new composite influence score is more accurate in comprehensively identifying true influential users, when compared to scores calculated using the characteristics-based, topic-based, and topology-based models. Also, this research shows that the new approach could leverage a variety of machine learning algorithms to accurately identify influencers. Last, while the focus of this research was on Twitter, our approach may be applicable to other social networks and micro-blogging services.

Abstract:
This thesis is composed by three standalone papers. The first chapter is about opinion formation processes. Individuals influence each other according to the network structure. If the network is connected and satisfies other mild assumptions, the society will reach a consensus. Therefore, it is a matter of interest understanding when the network would be connected or not. Here, we develop a model where the network takes place endogenously, and agents update their opinions accordingly. We study general conditions on the initial distribution of opinions such that consensus will be reached. We provide sufficient conditions for connectedness. In the dynamic model we show that polarization both in the transition and the long run. This essay is a joint work with Paolo Pin (Bocconi University). The second chapter is about peer effects. I consider how social pressure affects the strategic network formation process. Agents choose their links subject to mutual consent, and then equilibrium behaviors are determined by an underlying game where agents choose their effort. I provide a characterization result for all pairwise Nash stable network, and use farsightedness to avoid cycles. As an application, I consider peer effects in the classroom. Results suggest that we could set optimal policies to improve outcome of low achievement students through targeted incentives schemes. In the last chapter I focus on the interaction between real and virtual life. To do so I propose a model of search where agents choose in equilibrium how intense is their on-line activity. The outcomes of the game depend on the network, which takes place through a semi-random process. I extend the standard random network formation allowing agents to hold a certain degree of choice. The model allows to track characteristics on the meeting environment and individual preferences that would make virtual and real life substitutes or complements.

Abstract:
A main purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate and explain to what extend do media influence foreign policy of a state. Foreign policy is always under internal and external influences and media are considered to be one of those external influences that shape it. Agenda setting theory forms the theoretical frame for this thesis because it takes into consideration not just direct media-government relations but the public as well that inside of this relation serves as some sort of mediator. Besides this theory and the CNN effect as its main 'extension' identifiable victim effect and third person effect as important elements in the process of influence will be introduced as well as influence of visualization. When word 'media' is mentioned in this case it implies to television and newspapers' (both printed and online versions) messages and their influences (not just verbal but the visual ones as well). Examples and case studies in this case focus mostly on the US foreign policy due to its influential role, fact that the US is still the country with the most superlatives inside of international arena and the size, influence and role-model identity of its big media companies (for ex. CNN).
