Vemos coisas demais.

Abstract:

The sacrilege of Vanni Fucci, the beast of Pistoia, in the Divine Comedy This hermeneutic analysis presents a reflection on the complex nature of the concept of theft in the Christian world, compared to the pagan one. The author develops the idea of the desperate blasphemy of the infernal prisoner as a form of unconscious prayer. Vanni Fucci from Pistoia, the sacrilegious and blasphemous character of Dante’s Inferno, is analyzed by referring to the fundamental difference between the classical and medieval philosophical perception of metamorphosis as a symbol.

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:
In 2015 we celebrated the 750th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s birth. In light of the popularity of Dante’s imagery, channelled through a variety of the arts and across national contexts for more than seven centuries, this study explores practices of adaptation and remediation of Dante’s Inferno through the cinematic screen in 2005-2015 as well as its relationship with digital technologies. Despite our understanding of Dante and the screen being enriched by the contribution of several scholars such as Antonella Braida, Luisa Calé, Dennis Looney and Nick Havely, amongst others, very little has been written about the aesthetic, social and political impact of digital technologies on cinematic adaptations of the infernal imagery. In order to fill this gap in knowledge, this study investigates the remediate power of digital technology by simultaneously exploring its involvement and its impact. This includes an examination of film production, conservation, circulation and reception. In order to do so, I scrutinise the following three key case studies: Milano Film’s Inferno (ITA,1911), Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salò – 120 Days of Sodom (ITA, 1975) and David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis (CAN, FR, ITA, POR, 2012). This multi-disciplinary approach offers a theoretical revision of the theory of adaptation, shifting from the enduring centrality of the ‘reference text’ to a more intermedial awareness of the pivotal role played by the cinematic screen. This enables an exploration of the cultural, political and social impact of Dante’s inspired infernal imagery in the 21st century.

The discovery of extraterrestrial (ET) life would be a revelation of scientific and cultural magnitude that rivals Darwin's theory of evolution and Copernicus's hypothesis that the Earth revolves around the Sun. But while conjecture about the existence of ET life predates industrialism, it is only within the past century or so that technology has developed to the point where humans can add empirical observations to centuries of wondering. With rapid advancements in biological, chemical, and technological science, discovering ET life could be within reach. However, investigations of other planetary environments are still on the edge of technological capability and researchers may need to rely on indirect signs of life to make a detection. These signs may be difficult to interpret. This thesis surveys some of the main techniques and technologies that researchers currently use or are developing to search for alien life. It also teases out some limitations and ambiguity inherent in contemporary data interpretation.

Obras do Diabinho da Mão Furada is a controversial text, because it seems that, under a catholic and doctrinal shape, it transmits a message against that same doctrine and against its practices. The story was written in Portugal, in the beginning of the XVIIIth century, but it was published in Brazil in 1861-1862. Its authorship is imputed to Antonio José da Silva (1705-1739), an author known by his puppet plays, which he used to satirize the institutions, the moral and the social values of his age. Antonio José, better known as The Jew, was arrested and tortured in 1726, because of jewish practices. After that, he began to write and perform his plays, as a disguised form of agression and resistence to the Inquisition, and done it until his last imprisonment and death (1739). The motion of this present work is an investigation of the disguised message of the story Obras do Diabinho da Mão Furada, in order to decode the assaults against the Inquisition - assaults textually disguised beneath an eulogy of the catholic doctrine.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the design of deep-inference deductive systems. In the systems with deep inference, in contrast to traditional proof-theoretic systems, inference rules can be applied at any depth inside logical expressions. Deep applicability of inference rules provides a rich combinatorial analysis of proofs. Deep inference also makes it possible to design deductive systems that are tailored for computer science applications and otherwise provably not expressible. By applying the inference rules deeply, logical expressions can be manipulated starting from their sub-expressions. This way, we can simulate analytic proofs in traditional deductive formalisms. Furthermore, we can also construct much shorter analytic proofs than in these other formalisms. However, deep applicability of inference rules causes much greater nondeterminism in proof construction. This thesis attacks the problem of dealing with nondeterminism in proof search while preserving the shorter proofs that are available thanks to deep inference. By redesigning the deep inference deductive systems, some redundant applications of the inference rules are prevented. By introducing a new technique which reduces nondeterminism, it becomes possible to obtain a more immediate access to shorter proofs, without breaking certain proof theoretical properties such as cutelimination. Different implementations presented in this thesis allow to perform experiments on the techniques that we developed and observe the performance improvements. Within a computation-as-proof-search perspective, we use deepinference deductive systems to develop a common proof-theoretic language to the two fields of planning and concurrency.

Abstract:
Inferno, Volume I of Dante Alighieri's timeless magnum opus, The Divine Comedy, persists to modern times as a work of immense imagination and philosophical poignancy. Dante, as the Pilgrim, spins in verse a massive tale wherein his fictitious self must traverse the depths of the Christian Hell with the guidance of the poet Virgil. This meditative allegory for the passage of the soul, and the nature of worldly sin, has attracted the attention of scholars and artists alike for centuries and has been the inspiration for numerous famous musical works. Dark forests, burning sands, bleeding trees, and rivers filled with muck, or fire, or ice, Alighieri's epic poem is rife with metaphors, images, and scenes that almost demand treatment as a musical narrative. Binding all of these disparate tableaus is the spiritual journey of the Pilgrim, the allegory for the passage of the self, moral conscience, and the artistic soul.
