Abstract:
The present study aims to analyse the Tourism Supply Chain Management based on the published articles, available statistical data and the conducted research among the par- ticipants of the Tourism Industry (service provider/tour operator, intermediaries, cus- tomers). The paper has a goal to present a deeper insight into the factors affecting the choice of the distribution channel proposing a model based on the accumulated informa- tion regarding the tourism services distribution. In the research we pay a special atten- tion to the analysis of the factors motivating customers to choose traditional intermedi- aries at the time when all the operations can be done through the Internet. This problem would be analysed from both service provider and customers personal approach. The model also includes the future perspective of the development in the field of e-Tourism. The major contribution of this paper is the confrontation of the customers real prefer- ences and company‟s strategies with published earlier empirical research.

Gao, Ying. "Knowledge management in chemical process industry." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2005. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/842919/.

Full text
Abstract:
Information and knowledge are among the major resources in chemical process enterprise. Effective knowledge sharing and decision coordination are important to collaborative product development and integrated manufacturing. The integration of knowledge management in chemical process industry can provide the enterprise an environment for knowledge sharing and coordinate decision-marking, it can also help the enterprise to realize the best value of its knowledge assets and make businesses more competitive and profitable. In this work, an Ontology-based knowledge management system is proposed for knowledge integration and decision support in chemical process industry. Information technology, artificial intelligence and chemical engineering domain technology are integrated into a unified system to support knowledge integration, cooperate manufacturing, enterprise management and information service in chemical process industry. The system infrastructure includes Ontologies, knowledge repository, information retrieving agent, knowledge discovery tools and user interface. Ontology plays an important role in the knowledge management system for knowledge integration, knowledge sharing and reuse. Ontology classifies the knowledge base, integrates sources of knowledge into the knowledge repository, supervise database and user interface construction, and severs as a backbone of the knowledge management system development. A flexible and systematic approach for ontology development and implementation is established in this work to support ontology creation and application in the knowledge management system. Knowledge retrieving services are developed in the knowledge management system to extract information and knowledge from various data sources. Information retrieving agents retrieve information from the knowledge repository according to the user's requirement, and provide cleaned information through information filtering. Ontology-based information retrieving approach is utilized in this work. Data mining technique is applied to extract the implicit and potentially useful information, and also predict trends by mining the historic data. Knowledge management in chemical process industry consists of a set of practices aimed at monitoring the process operation and providing decision support for the engineers and managers. However, currently available computer-aided systems for chemical process engineering are normally isolated, which make it difficult for data and information exchange and decision support. Multi-agent system is utilized in this work to coordinate these tasks and incorporate the disparate information resources. Process simulation, rule- base decision support, artificial intelligence such as artificial neural network (ANN) are integrated in this system for process analysis, data processing, process monitoring and diagnosis, process performance prediction and operation suggestion. A multi-agent system developed on the basis of JADE (Java Agent Development Framework) is integrated in the knowledge management system, in which software agents are designed to perform the tasks of process monitoring, process performance prediction, manufacturing management and information service. With a common communication language and shared ontologies, agents can communicate and cooperate with each other to exchange and share information, and achieve timely decisions in dealing with various enterprise scenarios. The implementation of knowledge management system will provide well-organized information for technical monitoring in chemical process industry, and enable the knowledge integration and sharing among researchers, engineers and managers. The application of the knowledge management system in chemical process industry can also help the engineers to coordinate in manufacturing execution, and provide decision support based on up-to-date information and knowledge.

(cont.) payoff IT investments. When the North American Aerospace Industry invests less than any other industry in the high risk investments, its foreign counterpart invests more than any other industry. The second major finding is that the governance mechanisms in place are similar in the two Aerospace Industry segments, contrary to the IT Portfolios. IT decisions are made usually by IT executives or business executives, based on the information provided by Chief level executives and at least one other business group. Finally, the third major finding is that the Aerospace Industry gets above average returns from IT by being good at IT Business Planning, Top Management involvement and User Satisfaction. However, a major effort needs to be placed on improving user satisfaction as it is not always properly managed and hinders returns from IT. The lack of extensive communication also hinders the returns from IT by not guarantying top management involvement and awareness of the IT governance mechanisms.
This thesis originated by a need for the Lean Aerospace Industry to study in the Aerospace Industry what seems to be a troublesome domain for many other industries: Information Technologies (IT). Beforehand, there were two ways to do so: study how aerospace companies implement major systems like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Product Data Management (PDM). After a few short case studies, it seemed companies were puzzled by the true extent and the pervasiveness of IT. Therefore, we chose to not look at IT "locally" but try to understand the bigger picture. This thesis is largely based on the pioneering work done by Peter Weill and the Center for Information Systems Research of the MIT Sloan School of Management on IT Portfolio and IT governance. It rationalizes IT by setting it as a portfolio, just like financial investments. Balancing the IT portfolio will ensure anticipated alignment with the corporate strategies. However, the elaboration of proper IT governance mechanisms is necessary to ensure value and return from IT. Defining the governance is "specifying the decision rights and accountability framework to encourage desirable behavior on the use of IT". We therefore applied the IT Portfolio and IT governance frameworks defined by Peter Weill to the Aerospace Industry through the analysis of surveys available in Appendix D. We were able to get data from ten different companies spread out across the world. This allowed us to examine several IT profiles, and to make several significant findings, among which three are of major importance and are described below. The first major finding is that the North American IT portfolio is risk-averse, while the aggregated rest of the world is prone to invest heavily in high risk/high

Abstract:
The increased awareness of the deterioration of the biophysical environment and change in ecological values are affecting the relationship of organizations with the biophysical environment. The management of green issues has been peripheral to organizations' business strategy and dealt with in a piecemeal manner. However, organizations are recognising the strategic importance of the management of green issues and are introducing internal environmental management systems to deal with such issues. The management of green issues has to be dealt with by most organizations, and virtually all industrial organizations. In this work an 'ecological complex framework' has been developed in order to systematically investigate and represent the social process associated with ecological forces and environmental controls affecting the relationship of organizations with the biophysical environment. The aim of the framework developed in this work is first to understand how and what green issues are noticed by organizations and how they respond to them. Second to bring green issues into strategic management research. To allow a coherent investigation of this issue this work has concentrated on one specific industry, the oil industry, with special focus on the refining activity. A case study of the Brazilian oil organization Petrobras was undertaken to investigate the problem. In this case study representatives of Petrobras were interviewed about their roles in the management of green issues. These representatives ranged from operational staff through to senior management at refineries and head office. In addition to the case study environmental managers from other oil organizations in the UK were interviewed and a content analysis of corporate literature of all oil organizations studied was undertaken. The findings of this investigation have shown that the management of green issues have become an important issue in oil refineries' strategies. However, due to the complexity and uncertainty of stakeholders' ecological demands, oil organisations are still learning how to recognise their relevance and strategic implications.

De, Villiers Mark Graham. "Energy management in industry : a case study on the brewing industry." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/21960.

Full text
Abstract:
The industrial sector is the main energy user in South Africa, using about half the national total, and compared to most other industrialised countries South Africa has a high in_dustrial energy intensity, thus necessitating improved industrial energy management. The malt brewing industry was chosen as a case study industry to illustrate the potential for improved energy management in industry. Ohlsson's brewery in Cape Town was analysed in detail and energy management improvements identified for that brewery were ·expanded to include the malt brewing industry in general, by comparing Ohlsson's brewery to other breweries in South Africa. It was found that energy requirements at Ohlsson's Brewery could be reduced by 12-20%, by the implementation of economically feasible energy management schemes. However, mainly because of discrepancies in coal prices between Ohlsson's Brewery and most other breweries in South Africa, energy requirements for the brewing industry in general can be reduced by 7-13%. This translates to be a monetary saving of R242 000-R486 000/month, which is evenly spread between coal, electricity, and maximum demand savings. No single large energy saving scheme was identified, but the potential. savings are due to a number of schemes. The potential energy savings identified in this study exclude the savings as a result of the implementation of process sensitive schemes, which were considered beyond the scope of this study. Nevertheless some process sensitive schemes, associated with boiling in the brewhouse, could result in substantial savings. The energy usage target identified for South African breweries is higher than current energy requiiements for breweries in the Britain and Germany when climatic and operational constraints are taken into account. This is because Britain and Germany have higher energy costs relative to production costs, government incentive schemes for reducing energy usage, and more stringent environmental legislation often necessitating the recovery of brewhouse vapours.

Abstract:
The body of this research seeks to create an Industry Technology Roadmap for one segment of the U.S. textile and apparel industry, specifically, the flushable pre-moistened wipes industry. Industry Technology Roadmapping is a new type of strategic planning method. Previous technology forecasting methods allowed planners to identify several alternate future states or scenarios and provided uncertainty in either product needs or technological developments. In contrast, Industry Technology Roadmapping allows a company or an industry to proactively plan and prepare for its future by offering future goals, critical requirements and, finally, solutions to achieve the future goals. In addition, Roadmapping works as an effective organizational learning and knowledge creation tool and induces collaboration and new partnerships among companies as well. Currently, flushable pre-moistened nonwoven wipes emerge as new textile products and attempt to expand their future markets. During this research, industry expert interviews and surveys, consumer surveys, heavy user surveys, creation of an Internet blog, and literature review including a patent analysis were conducted for data gathering. The resulting Roadmap provides the nonwoven wipes industry valuable information about the potential future markets, required properties, the current environment of flushable wipes, including challenges, strength, and opportunities, and the solutions. These can help the U.S. nonwoven wipes industry to do informed investment into research, development and manufacturing facilities.

Holma, H. (Heikki). "Supply chain management and industry cyclicality:a study of the Finnish sawmill industry." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2006. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9514280741.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this study is to deepen current understanding concerning cyclicality in the Finnish sawmill industry. Traditionally, economic actors in the sawmill industry have faced dramatic price and demand fluctuations. Managers often regard cyclicality as natural and unavoidable in the industry. Accordingly, research related to business cycles in the Finnish sawmill industry has consisted of short-term studies that have mainly focused on predicting the turning points of cycles. In contrast to these short-term investigations, this study proffers research on cyclicality that is both empirical and historical. It aims to emphasise the actor perspective that seems to be absent in existing research on business cycles and cyclicality. In line with the adopted perspective, business cycles are not merely objective economic phenomena external to their observers. As regards the research, the above view necessitates a more complete understanding of business cycles and historical knowledge of the industry and the actors in its supply chain. The idea that heavy economic fluctuation is detrimental to all is emphasised in this thesis, though it has been argued that in the short term, some actors at the lower end of a distribution chain may take advantage of cyclicality by game playing. However, in the long run there are very few actors, if any, who profit from business cycles. The empirical data was primarily collected during a number of discussions with sawmill experts and in essence, the problem of cyclicality is observed through the eyes of Finnish sawmill managers. However, interviews with intermediaries as well as many public statistics and archive documents were also used to describe and explain the economic fluctuations over three decades in the industry. Industry-, supply chain- and dyadic business relationship-levels are used in the empirical and theoretical parts of the thesis. Business cycle theories by economists form the context for the study of cyclicality. Systems thinking presents the total picture of cyclicality as a problem in a specific industry, whereas the Bullwhip/Forrester effect describes cyclicality in a supply chain, and explanations for cyclicality in the Finnish sawmill industry are studied in terms of supply chain management. In particular, the presented sub-cases of dyadic business relationships shed light on the power of long-term business relationships as a smoothing-out strategy. The findings of this study reveal that there is another option for managers other than considering the cycles as being "natural", and that there is an opportunity to affect the traditional mode of behaviour in coping with business cycles. It is argued that the structures, behavioural patterns and management components of supply chain management play major roles when the sources of cyclicality and opportunities to moderate business cycles are investigated.

Abstract:
The Market Orientation concept has been intensively researched in the last years and there are evidences that it is beneficial to the companies, improving their competitiveness. This subject remits to three questions: How to plan a process of Market Orientation?, How to implement a process of Market Orientation? and Does the Market Orientation process generate a positive result to the Company?. Most researches focus on the first and third questions which means that they study the Market Orientation either at planning or implementation level. As a consequence, there is a gap concerning the second question - How to implement a process of Market Orientation?. This work intended to fulfill this gap through the identification of the main challenges, difficulties and solutions present in the Market Orientation process implementation in a family owned company. The results showed the importance of understanding the Market Orientation as a process of cultural changing in the organization and the human aspects that determine the behaviors facing this new organizational culture. Results also demonstrated the relevance of understanding the specific characteristics of a family owned company. Complementary results, future researches and managerial implications have been discussed too.

Product variety is a trend in many different industries and it is a subject with an increasing relevance to the business and academic arena. The management of product variety must seek to balance the benefits from the marketing perspective with the negative effects, in general, from the operations and logistics perspective, thus becoming a major challenge for industries where product variety is higher, such as the auto industry. This master`s dissertation is an empirical study that aims to quantify, compare and analyze the behavior of the variety of products in the most significant global automobile markets. Passenger cars manufactured by the five largest groups of automakers in the world (Toyota, GM, Volkswagen, Ford and Honda) and variables of product variety in the auto industry such as platforms, brands, models, versions, body type, power-trains, paint & trim, factory fitted options and dealer fitted options were used as objects of study. As a result, it was verified in which point of the supply chain the proliferation of automotive products occurs and the distinct way in which this variety is managed is analyzed in different markets downstream the chain from the car factory.

Traditionally supply chain management has played an operational role within cement and mineral extraction commodity companies. Recently, cost reduction projects have brought supply chain management into the limelight. In order to clarify the reasons of the evolution of supply chain management and to demonstrate the value of efficient supply chain management within the cement industry, an analysis of the cement supply chain has been carried out using Michael Porter's five forces. In addition, a comparative analysis of the supply chain strategy of the four largest cement companies has been presented, according to Larry Lapide's excellent supply chain framework. Also, a characterization of the current cement supply chain has been done, using the Supply Chain Council's SCOR model processes; plan, source, make, deliver and return. Five authors' various frameworks of supply chain design have been used to gain insight into the general characteristics of the cement supply chain and propose a definitive supply chain strategy. Finally, three case studies from mineral extraction commodity companies have been presented to demonstrate the potential of supply chain management. The study concludes that supply chain management has tremendous potential to add value as a strategic function for companies in these industries.

Liu, Tieming Ph D. Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Revenue management models in the manufacturing industry." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/33736.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2005.

In recent years, many manufacturing companies have started exploring innovative revenue management technologies in an effort to improve their operations and ultimately their bottom lines. Methods such as differentiating customers based on their sensitivity to price and delays are employed by firms to increase their profits. These developments call for models that have the potential to radically improve supply chain efficiencies in much the same way that revenue management has changed the airline industry. In this dissertation, we study revenue management models where customers can be separated into different classes depending on their sensitivity to price, lead time, and service. Specifically, we focus on identifying effective models to coordinate production, inventory and admission controls in face of multiple classes of demand and time- varying parameters. We start with a single-class-customer problem with both backlogged and discretionary sales. Demand may be fulfilled no later than N periods with price discounts if the inventory is not available. If profitable, demand may be rejected even if the inventory is still available.
(cont.) For this problem we analyze the structure of the optimal policy and show that it is characterized by three state-independent control parameters: the produce-up-to level (S), the reserve-up-to level (R), and the backlog-up-to level (B). At the beginning of each period, the manufacturer will produce to bring the inventory level up to S or to the maximum capacity; during the period, s/he will set aside R units of inventory for the next period, and satisfy some customers with the remaining inventory, if expected future profit is higher; otherwise, s/he will satisfy customers with the inventory and backlog up to B units of demands. Then, we analyze a single-product, two-class-customer model in which demanding (high priority) customers would like to receive products immediately, while other customers are willing to wait in order to pay lower prices. For this model, we provide a heuristic policy characterized by three threshold levels: S, R, B.
(cont.) In this policy, during each period, the manufacturer will set aside R units of inventory for the next period, and satisfy some high priority customers with the remaining inventory, if expected future profit is higher; otherwise, s/he will satisfy as many of the high priority customers as possible and backlog up to B units of lower priority customers. Finally, we examine production, rationing, and admission control policies in manufacturing systems with both make-to-stock(MTS) and make-to-order(MTO) products. Two models are analyzed. In the first model, which is motivated by the automobile industry, the make-to-stock product has higher priority than the make-to-order product. In the second model, which is motivated by the PC industry, the manufacturer gives higher priority to the make-to-order product over the make-to-stock product. We characterize the optimal production and order admission policies with linear threshold levels. We also extend those results to problems where low-priority backorders can be canceled by the manufacturer, as well as to problems with multiple types of make-to-order products.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates some important problems in the supply chain management (SCM) for the process industry to fill the gap in the literature work, covering production planning and scheduling, production, distribution planning under uncertainty, multiobjective supply chain optimisation and water resources management in the water supply chain planning. To solve these problems, models and solution approaches are developed using mathematical programming, especially mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), techniques. First, the medium-term planning of continuous multiproduct plants with sequence-dependent changeovers is addressed. An MILP model is developed using Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) classic formulation. A rolling horizon approach is also proposed for large instances. Compared with several literature models, the proposed models and approaches show significant computational advantage. Then, the short-term scheduling of batch multiproduct plants is considered. TSP-based formulation is adapted to model the sequence-dependent changeovers between product groups. An edible-oil deodoriser case study is investigated. Later, the proposed TSP-based formulation is incorporated into the supply chain planning with sequence-dependent changeovers and demand elasticity of price. Model predictive control (MPC) is applied to the production, distribution and inventory planning of supply chains under demand uncertainty. A multiobjective optimisation problem for the production, distribution and capacity planning of a global supply chain of agrochemicals is also addressed, considering cost, responsiveness and customer service level as objectives simultaneously. Both ε- constraint method and lexicographic minimax method are used to find the Pareto-optimal solutions Finally, the integrated water resources management in the water supply chain management is addressed, considering desalinated water, wastewater and reclaimed water, simultaneously. The optimal production, distribution and storage systems are determined by the proposed MILP model. Real cases of two Greek islands are studied.

Al-Halawani, Al-Tamimi Hatem. "Energy management in the Jordanian cement industry." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/2588.

Full text
Abstract:
Energy is essential to economic prosperity and quality of life. However it can have detrimental effects on the environment if not used properly. Moreover, if energy resources are scarce in a given country, then its use will impose economic and financial burdens on the national economy. The cement industry is energy-intensive, which adds a micro dimension to the macro issues mentioned above. Reducing energy consumption without due consideration to production requirements is not an optimal situation. What is needed is to arrive at a situation whereby energy is used rationally. The concept of rational use of energy has two embedded principles. The first is increased energy-use efficiency and the second is environmental protection. Jordan Cement Factories (JCF), located in a developing country where energy resources are not indigenously available and, therefore, costly energy requirements are imported, have realised the importance of addressing the energy management and conservation issues. This thesis describes the efforts initiated and conducted by the author, to address the research problem of improving energy usage through the application of effective management techniques aimed at reducing energy consumption per unit of cement produced. This present research has been concerned with energy management and efficient use of energy. The Jordan Cement Factories were used as a vehicle to demonstrate the proposed research methodology that aimed at improving energy consumption and thus operational efficiency. The methodology is based on establishing statistically significant relationships between interacting problem factors, and assessing the economic impact of improving these factors. Economic evaluation entailed the development of economic models and an application methodology combined with illustrative case studies. Consequently, the problem of energy management has been presented in a wider perspective that addressed the whole management system at the organisation. Towards that end, it was first necessary to show the significance of energy cost with respect to the overall manufacturing costs. The analysis of production costs, which demonstrated the significance of energy costs, was followed by the investigation and examination of the basic management factors that have direct impact on energy consumption at the JCF. Among these factors are, for instance, production line availability, production rate, average number of stoppages, and average duration of stoppages. These factors were determined using preliminary data analysis and the experience and technical knowledge of the researcher. The statistical analysis proved the existence of strong relationships between energy consumption and management factors. Several models were developed for a set of selected production lines, in the JFC at Fuhais and Rashadiya plants. These statistical models were generated using actual data for electrical energy and fuel consumption. The derived models have demonstrated the existence of strong relationships between energy consumption and management control factors; for instance, the values of R2 range from 60% to 90%. This implies that an equivalent percentage of the variations in energy consumption can be attributed to the selected management factors. The economic model developed in this research is concerned with demonstrating that effective management practices associated with proper maintenance and housekeeping can result in highly significant savings in energy usage. Although a simplistic methodology was used to evaluate the economic impact of any improvement programme, the economic treatment showed that the cost of improvement is actually negligible compared to the realisable savings in energy usage. The research has dealt with the details of developing a coherent energy management model whose objective is to establish transformational management processes of certain high-level management factors into daily operations and controls. The high-level management .factors are the same factors used as independent variables in the statistical and economic models, which statistically proved to be the major factors affecting the energy consumption at JCF. The research has also presented a detailed analysis of the organisational and procedural aspects of energy management with concentration on management functions, especially planning, controlling, executing, organising, and auditing. A detailed mapping and analysis of these functions as the main components of an Energy Management System (EMS) resulted in establishing job descriptions, organisational charts, work instructions and procedures for all-important functions of the EMS. The type of work described in this thesis could be extrapolated for application in other industries, particularly energy-intensive ones, to arrive at the objective of rational use of energy at the national and international levels. Comprehensive studies would need to be carried out for each type of industry prior to implementation. The cost benefit analysis presented in this research proved, beyond any doubt, the importance of implementing the EMS in JCF. As a result of this implementation it is demonstrated that huge annual savings were realised. Finally, as a result of improving energy control factors, introducing energy conservation measures and employing management techniques at JCF to guarantee the effectiveness of all such activities, resulted in an annual savings amount to about USS 3.5 million. Therefore, if the same or similar actions are undertaken by all cement, or other highly energy intensive industries then the savings could reach billions of dollars.

Abstract:
In the present quasi-experimental study, the relationships among individual executive characteristics, top management group processes, the business environment, and organizational performance for the gas and computer industries were investigated. Data were collected through a questionnaire using several published instruments measuring work locus of control, self-monitoring, group innovation/improvement, collaboration, and task management, environmental uncertainty, and perceptions of organizational performance. Return on assets data and sales data for several years were obtained from a business database. A total of 204 executives, 135 from the gas industry and 69 from the computer industry, returned completed questionnaires. Group processes were positively correlated with the average return on assets over three years. In addition, based on regression analyses, group processes predicted the average return on assets over three years. Work locus of control was positively correlated with group processes. However, none of the hypothesized moderator relationships were supported due to collinearity difficulties with one of the measures. Also, there were no differences between the gas and computer industries with regard to the uncertainty of the business environment.

Abstract:
Being exposed to serious games showed that some simulations widely vary in quality and learning outcome. In order to get to the bottom of best practices a detailed review of business management simulation literature was conducted. Additionally, an industry analysis was performed, by interviewing 17 simulation companies, testing a range of full and demo games, and conducting secondary research. The findings from both research efforts were then collated and cross-referenced against each other in order to determine three things: firstly, the practices and features used by simulation companies that have not yet been the subject of academic research; secondly, the most effective features, elements and inclusions within simulations that best assist in the achievement of learning outcomes and enhancement the user experience; and finally, 'best practices' in teaching a business management course in a university or company with the assistance of a simulation. Identified gaps in the current research were found to include the effectiveness of avatars, transparent pricing and the benefits of competing the simulation against other teams as opposed to the computer. In relation to the second and third objectives of the research, the findings were used to compile a business plan, with detailed recommendations for companies looking to develop a new simulation, and for instructors implementing and coordinating the use of a simulation in a business management context. Caliskan, Demirag Ozgun. "Demand Management in Decentralized Logistics Systems and Supply Chains." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/16185.

Full text
Abstract:
We analyze issues arising from demand management in decentralized decision-making environments. We consider logistics systems and supply chains, where companies' operations are handled with independent entities whose decisions affect the performance of the overall system. In the first study, we focus on a logistics system in the sea cargo industry, where demand is booked by independent sales agents, and the agents' capacity limits and sales incentives are determined by a central headquarters. We develop models for the central headquarters to analyze and optimize capacity allocation and sales incentives to improve the performance of the decentralized system. We use network flow problems to incorporate agent behavior in our models, and we link these individual problems through an overall optimization problem that determines the capacity limits. We prove a worst-case bound on the decentralized system performance and show that the choice of sales incentive impacts the performance. In the second study, we focus on supply chains in the automotive industry, where decentralization occurs as a result of the non-direct sales channels of the auto manufacturers. Auto manufacturers can affect their demand through sales promotions. We use a game theoretical model to examine the impact of retailer incentive and customer rebate promotions on the manufacturer's pricing and the retailer's ordering/sales decisions. We consider several models with different demand characteristics and information asymmetry between the manufacturer and a price discriminating retailer. We characterize the subgame-perfect Nash equilibrium decisions and determine which promotion would benefit the manufacturer under which market conditions. We find that the retailer incentives are preferred when demand is known. On the other hand, when demand is highly uncertain the manufacturer is better off with customer rebates. We extend this research by analyzing a competitive setting with two manufacturers and two retailers, where the manufacturers' promotions vary between retailer incentives and customer rebates. We find an equilibrium outcome where customer rebates reduce the competitor's profits to zero. We observe in numerical examples that the manufacturers are able to increase their sales and profits with retailer incentives, although this can be at the expense of the retailers' profits under some situations.

Abstract:

Misiura, Anna. "Enterprise risk management in the airline industry : risk management structures and practices." Thesis, Brunel University, 2015. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/11087.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis expands on the literature in the under-researched field of airline risk management by exploring organisational structures and practices of airline risk management systems and their technical and institutional drivers. In particular, it focuses on the phenomenon of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and its alignment to the requirements of airline business contexts. The theoretical framework informing this study combines structural contingency theory with two strands of institutional theory, namely old institutional economics and new institutional sociology. In this thesis, the phenomenon of risk management is investigated in situ as an organisational practice through a two-stage empirical study. Firstly, an exploratory field study was undertaken in a panel of ten international airlines. Secondly, the field study was complemented with findings from two explanatory case studies. This study explains how in developing risk management systems airlines balance the sometimes conflicting technical and institutional demands of their respective task and institutional environments. The adoption and implementation of ERM in airlines are found to be driven primarily by coercive and normative pressures, and expectations of improved organisational effectiveness and efficiency. This study additionally improves general understanding of the nature of ERM and its coupling and fluidity in the organisational settings of airlines. It lends evidence for systematic variations in roles, uses, and organisational design choices of ERM systems. It shows the interdependent nature of airlines’ ERM systems and other management systems. The study also demonstrates that the adoption of ERM in airlines drives development of new institutions, rules, and routines for comprehensive management of risks. Consistent with the tenets of contingency theory, this study conveys lack of a universally appropriate design of an airline ERM system. The main contribution of this thesis is to assess airline risk management systems, identify core drivers of effective risk management practice, and provide a framework with the aim of guiding airlines in the development of enterprise-wide risk management approaches aligned with the requirements of their institutional and technical contexts. Furthermore, this research overcomes the limitations of previous, mostly quantitative studies of ERM coupling and dynamics in organisations, as it explores and explains the structures, practices, and rationales of airline risk management systems within wider organisational contexts through the use of qualitative methodologies.
