Full textGrowing environmental issues and concerns have led to efforts to reduce CO2 and greenhouse effect pollutant emissions in the field of electric power generation. This has led Leroy Somer to investigate systems based on hybrid technologies to reduce genset fuel consumption and operating costs. A methodology is developed in this thesis to address issues of sizing hardware resources and their optimal use. The optimum energy management strategy is based on the dynamic programming algorithm of Bellman. It will be associated to a differential evolution optimization algorithm to optimize the design of the hybrid structure. The objective functions are obtained by developing energetic and economic models. Through this method, we show that the benefits of a hybrid generator are strongly related to its use. In cases where the generator is used on profiles with low load factors, the benefits will be significant. It will be very important to have good knowledge of load profiles applications before sizing the whole structure of the hybrid generator. A prototype of this system has been developed and has confirmed simulation results

Full textImpacts, the preservation of nature, the safety and security of products, and chemical or nuclear installations,. . . The dynamics of this standardisation process (the definition of technical and legal standards) the development and internationalisation of environmental policies (setting up of appropriate regulatory bodies) has resulted, at least in part, in an internationalisation by those responsible for the pollution of the social costs related to the environmental damage caused. Indeed, these dispositions have mostly been lobbied by the numerous associations or environmental and or ecological movements, with the assistance of the lawyers, the support of science and economics professors, and the back up of the media, to the extent that public opinion still today is significant in shaping environmental action, and plays a crucial role for those companies accused of misdemeanours. As a result, Electricite de France, one of the largest electricity companies in the world and one of the last state monopolies, has had to adapt on three fronts : internal, national and international. At each of these three levels, the environment is one of the major factors that EDF is required to consider in order to deal with its development and future. Such environmental problems that EDF must face are obviously related to the activities of the company which generates almost all the electric energy of France, as well as supplying and distributing it to each customer's home. Furthermore, through its undertakings abroad : direct sales of electricity in Europe, export and operations of electricity generating systems, technical and financial engineering, or its "diplomatic" activity through its participation in E7, EDF is required to meet a global challenge : that of sustainable development. Hence, the environment plays a significant role with implications across the board of EDF's activities and strategy, whether in technical choices for generation or marketing of…

Full textThis dissertation studies the environmental dimension of CSR. Current issues raised by sustainability need to deconstruct the concept of CSR to reveal the underlying structure of the Business & Society academic field. Through historical and comparative approaches, this research follows the trail that socio-Environmental issues leave in the controversies they deploy, in the relationships they forge and in compromises they establish with human and non-Humans through the construction of four energy facilities in France (Tignes’ hydroelectric dam and La Rance’ tidal power plant) and Quebec (Bersimis’ hydroelectric dam and Gentilly’ nuclear plant) during the 1945th until the 1970th. In the line of work that develop non dichotomous understanding of the nature and culture by taking the refusal of Modern ontology (Latour; Descola; Gladwin, Kennely and Krause, and Banerjee etc.) as a base, it sheds light on associations/dissociations performed within heterogeneous group of allies and revisits "environmental turn" thanks to the precise analysis of the work of the founding father of CSR, Howard R. Bowen Social Responsibilities of the Businessman (1953), illuminating its theoretical legacies. This research aims at making three contributions. First, it refines the "naturalistic" approach or "Modern" in two empirical and cognitive perspectives and two modes of relating to collective: realism and nominalism. Then it entered the literature of CSR into the Modern ontology by showing theoretical legacies in wilderness conservation. Finally, it mobilizes the Amodern approach to analyze the socio-Environmental issues, and proposes an alternative understanding of CSR based on a dynamic and relational view of responsibility where the traditional boundaries of the business environment are broken in favor of socio-Environmental networks

Full textSustainable development issues have strong impact on the building sector. To deal with these issues, major changes are to occur, not only in terms of organization but also in terms of professional skills. Consequently, the sector must prepare for a huge reconfiguration of professional practices. Engineering being directly affected by this evolution, this requires the implementation of adapted training, and, therefore, appeals for a significant enhancement of the skills of the teachers. To identify these different aspects the present research was conducted using a cross-approach. Following a first axis, specific issues of the construction industry are studied in order to make clearly appear the major mutations that will appear in the short and medium term as an answer to environmental and energy issues. Firstly, an analysis of the sector is proceeded in order to characterize, on one hand, professional practices and, on the other hand, the different jobs occupied by engineers. Secondly, an analysis by themes and technologies, taking into account research activities, technological trends and interviews of professionals, leads to identify the technical and behavioral changes which future engineers should be prepared to. From this double analysis the profiles of competencies required for future engineers, in the short and medium term, are deduced. Following a second axis, a focus is made on issues inherent to trainers working for engineering schools. Analysis of skills required for trainers operating in engineering schools leads to distinguish two major fields (teaching skills and disciplinary skills) likely to be strongly impacted in case of major structural or technological evolution. By crossing the results of the two axes of analysis, we highlight the need for new skills for trainers, for initial training as well as for continuous training, in order to accompany the evolution of the sector. These conclusions are then compared with the results of an inquiry proceeded within an existing higher education school representative of building engineers training facilities. The analysis shows highly contextual issues regarding capitalization and development of the skills of these trainers. It then makes concrete proposals on how to create the conditions in order to achieve the desired skills

Full textLimiting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is a major global issue, particularly for the energy, chemical and metallurgical industries. To this end, CO2 capture technologies have been developed in recent decades. In this study, we focused on three types of CO2 capture technologies: chemical absorption by MEA, membrane separation and activated carbon adsorption. The CO2 considered is emitted by a coal-fired power station and then directly valorized within a manufacturing process on the same site. The objective of this study was to quantify the environmental benefits of installing a CO2 capture technology in comparison to the current configuration, without CO2 capture. Our approach combined process modeling and life cycle assessment. The methodology adopted was to model the complete system (the power plant, the manufacturing process and the various capture units) using a flowsheeting software (Aspen Plus), then to determine the environmental impacts by LCA. The results show that the MEA chemical adsorption process is strongly penalized by the use of the solvent, both regarding the energy consumption and the environmental impacts. The membrane process exhibits significant environmental impacts, despite a much lower energy consumption, due to the massive use of polymers (membrane materials). Finally, the activated carbon adsorption process has lower environmental impacts than the other two processes in the vast majority of impact categories

Full textData centers consume vast amounts of electrical energy to power their IT equipment, cooling systems, and supporting infrastructure. This high energy consumption contributes to the overall demand on the electrical grid and release of greenhouse gas emissions. By optimizing energy performance, data centers can reduce their electricity bills, overall operating costs and their environmental impact. This includes implementing energy-efficient technologies, improving cooling systems, and adopting efficient power management practices. Adopting new cooling solutions, such as liquid cooling and indirect evaporative cooling, offer higher energy efficiency and can significantly reduce the cooling-related energy consumption in data centres. In this work, two experimental investigations on a new cooling topologies for information technology racks are conducted. In the first topology, the rack-cooling system is based on a combination of close-coupled cooling and direct-to-chip cooling. Five racks with operational servers were tested. Two temperature difference (15 K and 20 K) was validated for all the IT racks. The impact of these temperature difference profiles on the data-centre performance was analysed using three heat rejection systems under four climatic conditions for a data centre of 600 kW. The impact of the water temperature profile on the partial power usage effectiveness and water usage effectiveness of data centre was analysed to optimise the indirect free cooling system equipped with an evaporative cooling system through two approaches: rack temperature difference and by increasing the water inlet temperature of the data centre. In the second topology, an experimental investigation conducted on a new single-phase immersion/liquid-cooling technique is developed. The experimental setup tested the impact of three dielectric fluids, the effect of the water circuit configuration, and the server power/profile. Results suggest that the system cooling demand depends on the fluid’s viscosity. As the viscosity increased from 4.6 to 9.8 mPa.s, the cooling performance decreased by approximately 6 %. Moreover, all the IT server profiles were validated at various water inlet temperatures up to 45°C and flow rates. The energy performance of this technique and the previous technique was compared. This technique showed a reduction in the DC electrical power consumption by at least 20.7 % compared to the liquid-cooling system. The cooling performance of the air- and liquid-cooled systems and the proposed solution was compared computationally at the server level. When using the proposed solution, the energy consumed per server was reduced by at least 20 % compared with the air-cooling system and 7 % compared with liquid-cooling system. In addition, a new liquid cooling technology for 600 kW Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units. This cooling architecture gives more opportunities to use free cooling as a main and unique cooling system for optimal data centres (DCs). Five thermal hydraulic tests are conducted with different thermal conditions. A 20 K temperature difference profile was validated with a safe operation for all UPS electronic equipment resulting with a thermal efficiency of 82.27 %. The impact of decreasing water flow rate and increasing water and air room temperatures was also analysed. A decrease in inlet water and air temperatures from 41°C to 32°C and from 47°C to 40°C respectively increases the thermal efficiency by 8.64 %. Furthermore, an energy performance analysis comparison is made between air cooled and water cooled UPS units on both UPS and infrastructure levels

Full textIn many of the remote areas, the diesel generator is the main source of power supply. The cost of grid extension is, and will probably continue to be, prohibitive and the fuel cost increases severely with the remoteness of the location. The combination of several energy sources (wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, small hydroelectric power plants etc. ) in a Hybrid Power System (HPS) can be very attractive for most of the remote areas, in terms of cost and availability. However, improvements of the design and operation of the HPS is still needed to allow this technology more competitive in remote areas. In this context, the work presented in this thesis gives a contribution to the behaviour analysis and the performances control of an HPS constituted by two renewable sources, a diesel generator and storage batteries. This kind of system is studied according to three aspects: sizing, maximizing the use of the renewable resource and power quality
