FROM THE URBANITY TO THE TERRITORIALITY OF THE SADO RIVER’S SHORES – CONTRIBUTIONS AND CHALLENGES FOR AN URBAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL REGENERATION OF SETÚBAL’S URBAN, PORT AND INDUSTRIAL WATERFRONT
Urban-port interface’s history tell us of a space where we saw the reflection and intersection between urban tissues and heavy infrastructures, local economic dynamics and international trade networks, bourgeoisie social lifestyles and the working class crowd, memories, symbolic and diversified imaginaries. In this context, complexity was part of the peculiar unity and symbiosis between the urban and the sea worlds that made the port-cities so distinguishable. The changes this interface and its ancient centrality went through, now characterized by different and independent city and port dynamics and by the new forms of economic and territorial organization post-fordism, metropolisation, metapolisation, demand a thoughtful healing of the morphologic, social, identitary and institutional fractures we witness today. The urban regeneration of these areas offers an opportunity to recapture its centrality, thus contributing to a sustainable development minded resource optimization, in which the port and its industrial and logistic networks play a vital role. To do so, we need to develop a strategic, global and empowering perspective, capable of re-centring public and private investment and initiative, promoting urban cohesion, re-establishing a contemporary and meaningful coherence between the urban and port territories – that is to say, an urbanity that goes along a new territoriality. To do so, this research seeks to approach Setúbal waterfront’s transformation in the light of concepts and contemporary experiences that allow us to have a multi-dimensional reading of a territory where many of those port and metropolitan reorganization dynamics are felt, aside from being eventually a ground for future intervention proposals.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to shed light on the mechanisms involved in the transition of industrial port territories to the circular economy using a project management tool. The circular economy, which makes it possible to close the loop in the life cycle of materials, offers this type of territory the opportunity to redirect its economic development towards a more sustainable model. Although circular economy activities are developing in European industrial port territories, institutional work on the circular economy in this type of territory is currently limited mainly on identifying these activities. This provides little detail on the transition that is taking place in the territory or the role of the stakeholders. To understand the mechanisms behin this transition, we therefore propose to analyse the conditions for implementing these circular economy activities using a project management tool in the form of a dashboard of indicators created specifically for this type of territory. Our analysis is applied to two cases : Dunkirk, as a pioneer of industrial ecology in France, and North Sea Port, because of its special nature, resulting from the merger of the ports of Ghent in Belgium and Zeeland in the Netherlands. These two cases allow us to demonstrate the impact of our management tool on concrete projects. From a theoretical point of view, the thesis therefore contributes to putting the circular economy back on the port scale by mobilising the concept of the innovation ecosystem. On an empirical level, it provides a management and analysis tool for circular economy projects aimed at stakeholders and managers

Full textWe are interested in the question of the interactions between the actors located in a geographical agglomeration of the industrial-port zone (ZIP) type, thus triggering processes of cooperation and construction of territorial organization networks. According to this reasoning, we are interested in works that seek to trace the emergence of concepts of proximity economics and territorial governance. We will take into account approaches to reaffirm the value of interactions and the territorial dimension on economic activities. We start from the observation that "the propensity to interact with others is a fundamental characteristic of man" (Fujita and Thisse, 2003, p.25). Thus, we share with Bourdeau-Lepage and Huriot (2009) the idea that proximity reflects the greater or lesser ease of entering into a relationship, and therefore of interacting

Full textThe circulation of material and energy flows reflects the functioning of both biosphere and human societies. Industrial ecology, in its territorial approach, questions these socioecological interactions within a geographical area. It contributes to the definition and structuration of land into territory. Through an experimental approach led upon port areas, the aim is to reveal this dynamic of territorial configuration in industrial ecology. Territory constitutes a complex matrix of representations and practices, uncovered in actors’ speeches. From the analysis of 21 industrial ecology port case studies at an international scale, 9 territorial patterns are defined in order to observe and interprete this dynamic. Implemented in Marseille-Fos port area, these patterns allow the production and the interpretation of actors’ speeches in order to identify the territorial construction modes and to build a common territorial configuration, at the interface of actors’ representations and practices. This experimentation highlights a territorial embeddedness phenomenon for industrial ecology. It reveales industrial ecology’s contribution to a “territoriality-territorialisation” dynamic, leading to territorial configuration. It thus proposes a socioecological definition of territory, identifying biotopes and niches occupied by different actors. The overlapping of these biotopes and niches questions the evolution of port governance for the implementation of industrial ecology

ABSTRACT: This study approaches the East side of Almada, from Cacilhas to Cova da Piedade, specifically focusing on Margueira’s post-indutrial territory, where the Lisnave shipyards are located. The surrounding area and zonal problems are to be approached in order to understand the town’s pattern at different scales and over a great number of issues, namely when it comes to the management of water dynamics, Almada’s ecological compatibility, the linking of public spaces, and town mobility. A research was conducted to study the challenges arising from the abandoned industrial heritage in riverfronts and its impactful consequences for climate change, thus taking advantage of this problem in order to stimulate a more balanced and sustainable urbanity. A set of guidelines and appropriate tools are proposed to guide the Urban Regeneration process applied to this post-industrial territory. These are based on the management of water dynamics as a response to the phenomena of sea level rise, floods and storms, followed by the perspective of urban and environmental syntropy being achieved through a combination of actions, such as urban food production coupled with circular economy or renewable energy and reuse of waste. Subsequently, in order for the articulation between town and river to be achieved, one should improve the weaknesses in mobility and land topography, through the linking of spaces, public transportation and active modes of transport. The plan is to provide a rapprochement strategy between Almada, the River Tagus and both river banks, from Cacilhas to a metropolitan scale, bringing about connections to other cities, such as Barreiro, Montijo and Lisbon, through Tagus estuary. As regards to the area of intervention, development per action areas, particularly Cacilhas and Cova da Piedades, is to be carried out with the purpose of linking these zones with its already consolidated surroundings. This action is recognising both these territories as hubs of influence over Lisnave’s adjacent and intermediate land, thereby taking advantage of the existing industrial elements in favour of a more social, environmental and economically balanced urbanity. This proposal aims to prioritize the articulation of these formerly disconnected action areas. The focus on the construction and the use of public space in joint management with existing equipment, which is sustained by mixed-use buildings, seeks to avoid segregating and overloading specific areas with housing, commerce or services. Above all, this intends to preserve territory flexiblity so that its development is encouraged, while keeping logic and basic infrastructure well-balanced.

Full textThe thesis observes urban change in two early industrialised areas of the Lyon and Saint-Etienne metropolitan area (France) that support contradictory processes of enhancement/devaluation. The production of the small industrial towns of Givors and Terrenoire are the results of specific development strategies and geographical imaginaries that invested urban planning. We study how their local governments developed narratives about urban renewal that left their mark on the future of the territories. We used historical mapping to reveal the gap between the two cities’ urban social and economic changes in the XIXth and XXth century, and the representations of local authorities that often lag behind change. Thus, former representations of the industrial city and former planning practices are sustained in the long term. The two territories underwent several industrial restructurings until the late 1990's and retain the strong legacy of an urban fabric shaped by industry. Since then, in a complex post-industrial context, we show how urban policies refuse the industrial legacy for the sake of ensuring urban redevelopment. The search for residential and economic growth relies on the reusing of historical images of the two cities without breaching territorial devaluation. Thus, the production of renewed urban narratives encounters the resistance of the material and symbolic legacy inherited from the industrial past of the city

Full textPort wine is a generous Portuguese wine, that is to say a wine transformed by the addition of brandy during the winemaking process, which gives it a relatively high alcohol content that ranges from 16.5 to 22 degrees. It is one of those wines whose success and fame throughout the centuries bolster the reputation of its country’s wine production on the international stage. A wine whose terroir of production has been subjected very early, from the middle of the 18th century, to delimitation as well as very precise and strict regulation, Port wine is today exported to more than a hundred countries in the world. The objective of this research is to contribute to the geographical studies of wines and vineyards in the Mediterranean area by answering the following questions : - Where were the first Porto wine territories established ? How have they evolved during the different phases of globalization and according to which logic ? - How to explain the early diffusion (since the Modern Age) of Port wine on the globe and its long-lasting success with consumers internationally ? How to analyse, in particular, the « English taste » for Port wine, as well as the great success enjoyed by Port wine on the French and Portuguese markets from the second half of the 20th century ? - How to better understand the sharp downward trend in exports since the beginning of the 21st century ? Are we now witnessing a new crisis in the « Port wine planet » after nearly half a century of average growth of the export volume ? Or should we rather interpret this fall of the export curve as the evolution towards a certain form of modernity in terms of consumption ? - How do the various actors in the sector cope with the challenges raised by the globalization of the wine sector and the emergence of new consumer practices ? What is the place of territories and landscapes in the solutions they bring ? - Can the « Port wine sector » and the representations associated with this wine be considered as real levers of competitiveness and territorial development in the context of globalization ? - What can the recent developments in the organization of the sector as well as in consumer practices reveal about Portuguese society ?
