Abstract:
Through their transition into Smart Grids, electrical power grids gain the neccesary flexibiltiy to respond to increasing electrical supply volatility. The standardized Smart Grid Architecture Model and Use Case Methodology serve as framework to develop Smart Grids. Currently, there is still a lack of such a methodical framework for setting up Industrial Smart Energy Grids and it is particularly necessary to implement energy flexibility measures in industrial plants. The methodical approach presented here provides a blueprint for building an Industrial Smart Grid for energy flexibility by adapting the Smart Grid Architecture Model and the use case methodology .

Abstract:
Smart grids can be considered as a concept that integrates electrical, automatic control, information, and communication technologies. This concept constitutes a fundamental complement in the integration of renewable energy sources in electrical power systems. Although its application is fundamentally framed in transmission and distribution networks, it could also be implemented in industrial electrical systems. This article aims to analyze the advantages of implementing solutions based on smart grids in the industrial sector. Likewise, the results of its implementation in the large industry in the province of Cienfuegos, Cuba are presented. Specifically, reactive compensation, voltage, and demand management controls were integrated into a Supervision, Control, and Data Acquisition system forming a smart grid. It is shown that, in industries where infrastructure and equipment conditions exist, it is possible to successfully implement solutions with the functionalities and benefits inherent to smart grids.

Abstract:
Industrial enterprises connected to the power grids of electricity producers spend a lot of money on the transport of purchased electrical energy. The present article introduces some opportunities to minimize the costs. The author studied the principles of pricing of the transport of electrical energy purchased by industrial enterprises connected to power grids of electricity producers and described the advantages and disadvantages of the existing pricing options. The new indicator generator of voltage tariff coefficient made it possible to analyze the effectiveness of the transport tariffs for electrical energy at various types of industrial enterprises in relation to the tariff field of several regions of Russia. The study revealed ineffectiveness of the current tariffs on the transport of purchased electrical energy applied by such industrial enterprises. The author developed recommendations to reduce the cost of electricity. The main priority option was the application of demand management for electricity consumption by regulating the schedules of energy-intensive technological processes. This measure takes into account the criteria of economic efficiency, system reliability, and sustainability. It will enable industrial enterprises to manage their own schedule of electricity consumption without having to change the planned production volumes, thus reducing all cost components.

The downtrend in electrical output, 10-14% 1977-79 to 6% 1979-84, was reversed to 7.4% between 1980 and 1987 when 35,000 Mw of capacity was added, transmission networks were expanded and regional grids linked. Part of this success arose from policies that replaced a monolithic system of bureaucratic planning to involvement of local interests and decentralization. Chinese organizations have also been able to take advantage of foreign technology and investment. Nevertheless, industrial output only reached 75-80% of its potential due to inadequate electric power supply.

Abstract:
Electricity is a multifaceted form of energy and is used globally, with a continuously growing demand. Electrical power grids are there for more than 150 years. The generated electrical power is delivered to different industrial, commercial, and residential sectors, thereby fulfilling the ever-growing demand. In this research paper, the design and optimization of an industrial grid for various electrical loads is discussed. The electrical grid ensures a stable power supply to the loads by providing quality power with the minimum total harmonic distortion (THD) possible. A complete study of the short circuit current has been done in two different electrical grid systems, as it is seen that the short circuit current depends on the impedance of the transformer which feeds the load. These two designs of a single diagram will be simulated by using a power system analyzer, the Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP) software. The different electrical parameters, like choosing the optimised rated generator, cables, and transformers, are done. Load flow analysis is performed on both the design to evaluate the THD, short circuit fault, as well as to choose the right protection circuit for the system.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the existing reactive power compensation in the electrical systems of Azerbaijan, and also examines the problems and shortcomings that arise in the reliable supply of electrical energy to consumers and provides information about the sources of RP that are produced in the industry of the republic. The most important task that requires solving the problem of improving the quality of electrical energy in the country's networks, both at the design stage and at the operation stage of electrical power supply systems, is reactive power compensation. Based on this, it is necessary to select RP sources, their favorable placement, regulation and calculation of their power in accordance with the existing power supply system. Benefits RP in industrial electrical networks include many issues, the solution of which is aimed at increasing the effective power factor and stability of electrical devices, their efficiency, improving the quality of electricity and, in general, the reliability of the electrical system. Currently, there are still issues that have not been resolved and require a special approach for their implementation. Such important issues include: determining the installation of compensation devices, choosing their number, type, safe operation and protection. In the industrial power grids of Azerbaijan, issues of automatic control of RP are at the development stage and for this development, adequate mathematical models of a rational RPK system with minimal losses are being considered. To solve the above, targeted scientific methods are created. The problem of RPK in modern electrical systems of Azerbaijan is important for the following reasons: 1) the consumption of reactive energy increases due to an increase in loads with the consumption of reactive current in the country’s electrical networks; 2) the growth of RP consumption is accelerating compared to active consumption in many sectors of industrial production; 3) there is an increase in reactive energy consumption not only in large urban power grids, but also in small rural ones. Keywords: reactive power, compensating devices, electrical devices, energy, system, quality, synchronous compensator, static capacitor.

Abstract:
Low-cost monitoring and automation solutions for smart grids have been made viable by recent advancements in embedded systems and wireless sensor networks (W.S.N.s). A well-designed smart network of subsystems and metasystems known as a “smart grid” is aimed at enhancing the conventional power grid’s efficiency and guaranteeing dependable energy delivery. A smart grid (S.G.) requires two-way communication between utility providers and end users in order to accomplish its aims. This research proposes a novel technique in enhancing the smart grid security and industry fault detection using a wireless sensor network with deep learning architectures. The smart grid network security has been enhanced using a blockchain-based smart grid node routing protocol with IoT module. The industrial analysis has been carried out based on monitoring for fault detection in a network using Q-learning-based transfer convolutional network. The experimental analysis has been carried out in terms of bit error rate, end-end delay, throughput rate, spectral efficiency, accuracy, M.A.P., and RMSE. The proposed technique attained bit error rate of 65%, end-end delay of 57%, throughput rate of 97%, spectral efficiency of 93%, accuracy of 95%, M.A.P. of 55%, and RMSE of 75%. This proposed paradigm is advantageous for the operation of smart grids for increased security and industrial fault detection across the network because security is the biggest barrier in smart grid implementation.

Abstract:
The decentralization in the electrical power grids has gained increasing importance, especially in the last two decades, since transmission system operators (TSO), distribution system operators (DSO) and consumers are more aware of energy efficiency and energy sustainability issues. Therefore, globally, due to the introduction of energy production technologies near the consumers, in residential and industrial sectors, new scenarios of distributed energy resources (DER) are emerging. In order to guarantee an adequate power management in the electrical power grids, incorporating producers, consumers and producers-consumers (prosumers) together, it is important to adopt intelligent systems and platforms that allow the provision of information on energy consumption and production in real time, as well as for obtaining a fair price for the sale and purchase of energy. In this paper, we analyze the literature to identify the appropriate solutions to implement a decentralized electrical power grid based on sensors, blockchain and smart contracts, evaluating the current state of the art and pilot projects already in place. We also discuss a proposal for a power grid model, with renewable energy production, combining Internet of Things, blockchain and smart contracts.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to identify the need of Smart Grid Technologies in communication between industrial plants with co-generation capability and the electric utilities in providing the most optimum scheme for buying and selling of electricity in such a way that the fuel consumption is minimized, reliability is increased, and time to restore the system is reduced. A typical industrial plant load profile based on statistical mean and variance of industrial plants' load requirement is developed, and used in determining the minimum cost of producing the next megawatt-hours by a typical electric utility. The 24-hour load profile and optimal power flow program are used to simulate the IEEE 39 Bus Test System. The methodology for the use of smart grid technology in fuel saving is documented in the thesis. The results obtained from this research shall be extended to include several industrial plants served by electric utilities in future work by the UNO research team.

Böris, Karin, and Maria Berg. "A Review of Drivers and Barriers for Demand Side Flexibility : The perspective of electric grid customers." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Energisystem, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-168469.

Abstract:
The thesis aims to obtain a holistic perspective of opportunities, drivers and barriers that different grid customers experience when enabling demand side flexibility. Due to the increasing problems of capacity shortage of electricity in large cities in Sweden, solutions on the demand side of the electric power grid have become increasingly interesting. Demand side flexibility is a voluntary change of demanded electricity from the grid due to some kind of incentive, which can help support balancing the electric power grid to avoid capacity shortages. Furthermore, the energy transition towards a decentralised power system with an increasing share of variable renewable energy requires a changed demand profile. In this research, a qualitative research methodology was applied. Eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted with case companies within the industry and property company segment. Interviews were also conducted with three actors on the electric power market providing services to aggregate the potential of smaller flexibility resources, as well as with an expert from the Swedish Energy Market Inspectorate. A State of the Art review was completed in order to collect theory and draft previously identified aspects of demand side flexibility. The result shows that the concept is not unknown amongst electricity customers. However, there is a limited knowledge and interest in enabling demand side flexibility. The knowledge gap includes the awareness of potential flexibility resources as well as business opportunities of providing flexibility services. Conflicting priorities within organisations also presents an important barrier, where other easier and more profitable measures may be prioritised. There is also a fear of disrupting core business by causing loss of quality, comfort or production, which proposes a barrier. To overcome mentioned barriers and increase flexibility the financial benefits have to be distinctive and clear. Further, case companies express an ambition of contribution to the environment and sustainable development. By increasing the awareness of the benefits which increased flexibility induces, electricity consumers can become more motivated in adapting a flexible consumption. In addition, case companies express a desire of being early adopters in order to prevent future forced participation or termination of business. In order to enable demand side flexibility the knowledge and interest of the concept must increase. This should be done by providing clear, comprehensible information about the business opportunities of demand side flexibility as well as showcasing successful examples of implementation. Furthermore, it should include suggestions of easy, economical measures different grid customers could carry out to increase their flexibility. By providing this information the interest in flexibility can increase, thus increase the implementation and participation.

This work presents an analysis of the narrowband communication through the power line (PLC) in an industrial environment. For analysis, a development kit for PLCbased applications according to the G3-PLC standard was used. Experimental tests and results for different scenarios that simulate various situations existing in an industrial environment. An influence of the insertion of noise in the PLC channel is demonstrated by the drive of inverters and motors, in order to verify a nonperformance influence of the PLC communication. As a comparative basis, a maximum standard transmission distance of the AS-Interface network was used, very widespread in industrial environments. Recommendations regarding the modulation technique and the size of the data packet are presented. As a final result, it is concluded that the G3-PLC communication standard and its ROBO modulation technique meet the requirements of industrial communication, especially for industrial variable monitoring applications where time is not critical.

Abstract:
Improving the functioning and the safety of the electrical grids is a topic of great concern, given its magnitude and importance in today's world. In this thesis, we focus in these two subjects. In the first part, we study undetectable cyber-physical attacks on power grids, which are attacks that involve physical disruptions, including tripping lines and load modifications, and sensor output alterations. We propose a sophisticated attack model described under the full Alternating Current (AC) power flow equations and show its feasibility on large grids from a test cases library. As counter-measures, we propose different defensive strategies that the network's controller can apply under a suspected cyber attack. These are random, simple and fast procedures that change the voltages across the network and aim to unmask the current status of the system, assuming that the attacker cannot react against their randomness. Secondly, with access to data collected through Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) by a power utility in the United States, we perform statistical analyses on the frequency and voltage time series that have been recorded at a rate of 30 Hz. We focus on intervals of time where the sampled data shows to be in steady-state conditions and, with the use of appropriate signal processing filters, we are able to extract hidden anomalies such as spatio-temporal correlations between sensors and harmonic distortions.

Abstract:
Pakistan has always had a history of severe energy shortfalls, which rose up to an alarming 33% in 2013. This situation was countered by investments in the energy sector through the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which were unfortunately largely based on brown fuels. Although beneficial in the short term, these investments do not bode well for the climate scenario of Pakistan, with various parts of the country already having experienced temperatures rise of 1-3°C. To ensure that the current situation doesn’t exacerbate and is tackled in a timely manner, this research aims to examine how the untapped potential of renewable energy in Pakistan can be better utilized by modelling the entire electrical grid system for multi-portfolio based sustainable electricity generation, in line with the sustainable development goals chalked out by Pakistan with the United Nations (UN). Delving further into the matter, a gap is observed that demands coalescence between sustainability and portfolio-based generation in the context of Pakistan, since the prevalent narrative is of Business As Usual (BAU). The research methodology implemented is a cross sectional case study employing qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and outcomes, in which the entire grid system of Pakistan is studied and sustainability metrics are defined; followed by a comprehensive use of Multi-Criteria Decision Methodology in decision making process. Portfolios defined are a combination of different generation technologies, each simulating a possible avenue of policy, and are then evaluated for a range of sustainability metrics to understand the tradeoffs involved to arrive at a set goal. The process decision framework developed shall enable the Pakistani energy sector in meeting the energy demands by providing the decision-makers with various routes to do so, while informing on the sustainability impact of their decisions.

Abstract:
AbstractComplex systems, including energy and transportation systems, constitute a crucial part of modern societies’ critical infrastructure. It is imperative to ensure their stability even during periods of crisis or fundamental transformation, such as sustainability transformation. It is difficult to anticipate how individuals will respond to policy interventions aimed at preserving stability, for example, by banning cars from congested roads, or to policy interventions aimed at fundamentally altering the system, for instance, by promoting renewable energies. A conflict of interest may occur at both an individual and institutional level if sustainability measures, such as increasing the number of electric vehicles or photovoltaic systems, jeopardize the stability of the system, for example, by increasing grid volatility. Furthermore, research into complex systems has demonstrated that they tend to develop nonlinearly rather than linearly, making them difficult to predict. Agent-based modeling (ABM) has emerged as a valuable method to comprehend the dynamics of complex socio-technical systems. Moreover, ABM enables us to anticipate future outcomes and evaluate the effectiveness of different policy measures aimed at enhancing safety or promoting sustainability (or both). The chapter briefly introduces the ABM concept and the SimCo simulation framework, developed at TU Dortmund University. SimCo is grounded in analytical sociology, focusing on people’s everyday practices, bounded-rational decision-making and on governance concerns. Additionally, this chapter will present the outcomes of several simulation experiments to address the question of how to achieve safe transformations of complex systems.

Abstract:
The conventional energy meters are not suitable for long operating purposes as they spend much human and material resources. Smart meters, on the other hand, are devices that perform advanced functions including electrical energy consumption recording of residential/industrial users, billing, real-time monitoring, and load balancing. In this chapter, a smart home prototype is designed and implemented. Appliances are powered by the grid during daytime, and a photovoltaic panel stored power during the night or in case of an electricity outage. Second, consumed power from both sources is sensed and further processed for cumulative energy, cost calculations and bill establishment for different proposed scenarios using LABVIEW software. Data are communicated using a USB data acquisition card (DAQ-USB 6008). Finally, a simulation framework using LABVIEW software models four houses each equipped with various appliances. The simulator predicts different power consumption profiles to seek of peak-demand reduction through a load control process.

Abstract:
Protecting networks that are part of industrial control systems (ICS), such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, is a significant issue that affects public health as well as public safety and national security. Industrial control systems such as the SCADA systems that manage our electrical grids, oil pipelines, and water distribution systems remain vulnerable to cyber-attacks from different directions through various technologies in the U.S. It is essential to understand that the security of critical infrastructure goes far beyond the scope of cybersecurity. Qualitative interviews with subject matter experts were used to discover the best practices for protecting these systems.

Abstract:
With the current state of automotive electrification, predicting which electrification pathway is likely to be the most economical over a 10- to 30-year outlook is wrought with uncertainty. The development of a range of technologies should continue, including statically charged battery electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and EVs designed for a combination of plug-in and electric road system (ERS) supply. The most significant uncertainties are for the costs related to hydrogen supply, electrical supply, and battery life. This greatly is dependent on electrolyzers, fuel-cell costs, life spans and efficiencies, distribution and storage, and the price of renewable electricity. Green hydrogen will also be required as an industrial feedstock for difficult-to-decarbonize areas such as aviation and steel production, and for seasonal energy buffering in the grid. For ERSs, it is critical to understand how battery life will be affected by frequent cycling and the extent to which battery technology from hybrid vehicles can be applied. Unsettled Issues in Electrical Demand for Automotive Electrification Pathways dives into the most critical issues the mobility industry is facing.

Abstract:
The Brazilian continental dimensions and diversified natural resources are proportional to the challenges to develop its infrastructure sustainably and supply proper public services to more than 200 million inhabitants. Energy consumption has doubled since 1990, fostered by economic growth and the expansion of middle class. In this context, promote energy efficiency, in a broad sense, is urgent and rational. Brazil has a relatively long history in promoting energy efficiency at final user level. A landmark of this process is the Brazilian Labeling Program, launched in 1984, as direct consequence of high prices of energy at that time. This program was coordinated by the National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality, which sets standards for evaluation, ranks the performance of energy equipment and imposes a classificatory labeling to inform consumers, with a label similar to other countries. The National Electricity Conservation Program was created in 1985 by MME and is executed by ELETROBRÁS. The energy saving induced by this program in 2013 is equivalent to 2.1% of the total electric energy consumption in the period, corresponding to the annual energy consumption of about 5 million Brazilian households. In 2001, Federal Law 10,295, also known as the Energy Efficiency Law, was approved to reinforce those energy efficiency programs, allowing the Brazilian government to establish Minimum Energy Performance Standards for appliances and energy equipment, prohibiting the commercialization of low efficiency models and promoting the progressive withdrawal of low-efficiency models. According to the National Energy Plan 2030, up to 15.5 GW of electricity generation could be saved as a result of energy efficiency in the next 20 years. The Smart Grids, adopting modern technologies in electricity distribution has been proposed in Brazil improve the quality provided in the low voltage service, reduce losses, and reduce operating costs, among others. Several regulations related to this subject, dealing with grid connection for distributed small-scale generation, the establishment of the 'hourly tariff', with the regulation of the use of PLC; and with the compulsory use of Geographic Information System. Currently, dozens pilot projects on Smart Grids are underway in the country. Two projects are presented in detail: CEMIG and AES Eletropaulo, two Brazilian power utilities.
