Abstract:
Sport, once an amateur pursuit has evolved in to a lucrative industry. The most recent development in the evolution of Australian sport has been the emergence of industrial regulation. Unlike other Australian labour markets, the sports administrators labour market was entirely market regulated until 1994. Over the last five years the sports administrators labour market has transformed into a centralised award based system. On the surface it appears that there is no obvious explanation for the dramatic re-regulation of this labour market. In order to determine the factors behind the re-regulation, this thesis investigated Australian sports administrators attitudes to unionism, awards and enterprise bargaining, including their preferences to awards and enterprise bargaining agreements. The attitudes of 229 Australian sports administrators were surveyed. The response rate was 67.25%. Findings from the survey indicated a number of points: (1) union membership predicted 8% of their attitude to unionism, (2) non union members were more likely to have positive and accepting attitudes to unions, (3) sports administrators working under Enterprise Bargaining agreements had more positive and accepting attitudes of unions, (4) Enterprise Bargaining was considered to be more beneficial than not in sport, (5) Enterprise Bargaining had more than double the support of Award regulation, and (6)Award regulation had almost equal amounts of rejection and support. Other results indicated that the sports administrators labour market remained market regulated until 1994 because a majority of sports administrators belonged to demographic groups which were less inclined to become union members. Factors behind the reregulation were determined to be: strong support for targeted services within workplaces rather than generic services across an industry, and strong support for increased union interaction when negotiating terms and conditions of employment which effects sports administrators' attitudes to unionism. It was evident that the re-regulation was not caused by a large shift in the attitudes of sports administrators or a result of problems stemming from the market being entirely by market regulation. It is more than likely that the sudden re-regulation of the sports administrators labour market was the sports industry's first step towards industrial maturity.

Botma, Carli Helena. "The role of reasonableness in the review of labour arbitration awards." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1035.

Full text
Abstract:
The Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995 in section 145 and the Arbitration Act 42 of 1965 in section 33 uses wording very similar to one another to specifically enable the labour court to review CCMA and private arbitration awards respectively. As a result, labour arbitration award reviews are regarded as part of the family of special statutory reviews; the implication of such a classification being that the situation specific statutory provision(s) and the jurisprudential principles developed thereunder are applicable rather than those applicable to reviews in general. When the common purpose of the review procedure is then read with the legislature’s objective of quickly and finally resolving labour disputes at arbitration level as well as the limited grounds for review as provided for in the LRA and the AA, indications are that the labour courts’ review powers should be restrictively interpreted. However, because the making of CCMA arbitration awards also constitutes administrative action, the review thereof is also influenced by the constitutional right to just administrative action and reasonableness in particular. This does however not mean that applicants on review can rely directly on section 33 of the Final Constitution or on the broader grounds of section 6 of the PAJA to review CCMA arbitration awards on the basis of unreasonableness. Section 145 of the LRA constitutes administrative action legislation within the specialised labour law sphere and reasonableness is not a ground mentioned therein. A constitutionally consistent interpretation of section 145 however has the effect that reasonableness suffuses the statutory defined grounds for review; a state of affairs that does not threaten the restrictive scope of CCMA arbitration award reviews. In terms thereof, courts on review must establish whether the decision, alleged to have been reached by the commissioner as a result of the occurrence of one or more of the section 145 grounds for review, is one that a reasonable decision-maker could not reach. This interpretation accords far better with the legislature’s specific objectives pertaining to labour arbitration award reviews and the permissible range of reasonableness further ensures that awards are not easily interfered with on review. When a court is then called upon to determine whether or not a decision is reviewable in terms of section 145, it is entitled to have regard to both the award and the record of the proceedings. If, after such scrutiny, the court is of the opinion that the decision was arrived at as a result of the occurrence of a defect as contemplated by section 145 of the LRA, the decision should be reviewed and set aside irrespective of the fact that the outcome can be sustained by other reasons also identifiable from the record; the focus of review always being on the commissioner’s process of reasoning and the way in which he arrived at his findings rather than the outcome of the process. A court should however be mindful of the fact that erroneous reasons for findings per se are not reviewable grounds, but at best serve as evidence of a reviewable ground that will in conjunction with other considerations have to be sufficiently compelling to justify an inference that the decision is unreasonable. In the case of jurisdictional reviews, the reasonableness standard is also applicable because the focus is on the commissioner’s subjective reasons for his findings rather than the jurisdictional fact’s objective existence. A court on review can accordingly set aside a decision following upon the non-observance of a jurisdictional fact if the commissioner, in deciding that the jurisdictional fact existed, committed one or more of the section 145 grounds for review. In the case of private arbitration awards, applicants seeking a review must do so on the grounds recognised in section 33 of the AA and reasonableness is not one of them. This is however not the only reason why these awards are also not subject to the scrutiny of the reasonableness test on review. The other reason relates to the fact that the issuing of private arbitration awards does not constitute administrative action. The disputing parties can also not by agreement incorporate the reasonableness standard into private arbitration award reviews conducted by the labour court. Such parties are however entitled to establish a private appeal or private review body in their arbitration agreement, clothing it with the powers that they wish to confer upon it, including the ability to review an award subject to the reasonableness standard.

Karimi, Pour Fatemeh. "Health-aware predictive control schemes based on industrial processes." Doctoral thesis, TDX (Tesis Doctorals en Xarxa), 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/673045.

Full text
Abstract:
The research is motivated by real applications, such as pasteurization plant, water networks and autonomous system, which each of them require a specific control system to provide proper management able to take into account their particular features and operating limits in presence of uncertainties related to their operation and failures from component breakdowns. According to that most of the real systems have nonlinear behaviors, it can be approximated them by polytopic linear uncertain models such as Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) and Takagi-Sugeno (TS) models. Therefore, a new economic Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach based on LPV/TS models is proposed and the stability of the proposed approach is certified by using a region constraint on the terminal state. Besides, the MPC-LPV strategy is extended based on the system with varying delays affecting states and inputs. The control approach allows the controller to accommodate the scheduling parameters and delay change. By computing the prediction of the state variables and delay along a prediction time horizon, the system model can be modified according to the evaluation of the estimated state and delay at each time instant. To increase the system reliability, anticipate the appearance of faults and reduce the operational costs, actuator health monitoring should be considered. Regarding several types of system failures, different strategies are studied for obtaining system failures. First, the damage is assessed with the rainflow-counting algorithm that allows estimating the component’s fatigue and control objective is modified by adding an extra criterion that takes into account the accumulated damage. Besides, two different health-aware economic predictive control strategies that aim to minimize the damage of components are presented. Then, economic health-aware MPC controller is developed to compute the components and system reliability in the MPC model using an LPV modeling approach and maximizes the availability of the system by estimating system reliability. Additionally, another improvement considers chance-constraint programming to compute an optimal list replenishment policy based on a desired risk acceptability level, managing to dynamically designate safety stocks in flowbased networks to satisfy non-stationary flow demands. Finally, an innovative health-aware control approach for autonomous racing vehicles to simultaneously control it to the driving limits and to follow the desired path based on maximization of the battery RUL. The proposed approach is formulated as an optimal on-line robust LMI based MPC driven from Lyapunov stability and controller gain synthesis solved by LPV-LQR problem in LMI formulation with integral action for tracking the trajectory.

Abstract:

This mixed-method research study evaluated the effectiveness of value stream mapping (VSM) and 5S lean tools based on Ohno’s waste model and Womack’s lean thinking concept to identify and eliminate office waste during the employee award nomination process in a large U.S. manufacturing company. The participants involved 19 award administrators and 108 previous award nominees from 2007 to 2012. The researcher carried out two surveys using structured and non-structured questions. Data was collected and analyzed. A Balanced Integrated Office Lean Model (BIOLM) framework was developed and pilot tested to engage employees with practical application of lean tools outside of the manufacturing shop floor. This research addressed the existing gap in the body of knowledge dealing with office lean practice. The findings from this study are generalizable and applicable to businesses interested in improving productivity in the office environment.

Abstract:
This thesis advances a proposition that designers of exemplary industrial buildings adopt design heuristics based on evolving conceptual prototypes. The detail design priorities and formal expressions may vary, but the essential structure of their design solution search patterns should show a high degree of commonality. This commonality is based on the balance between rational and intuitive strategies for design decision making. Therefore it is the central objective of this thesis to demonstrate that a pattern between these two cognitive approaches to design thinking occurs across the cases investigated. The research was organised as a comparative study of the design process used by a selection of designers to design industrial buildings which subsequently received design awards for the quality of their design. Through a series of six case studies using semi-structured interviews and follow-up repertory grid analysis, data was obtained which allowed the various design methods to be recorded, analysed and compared. A control sample of designers of non award winning industrial buildings was also conducted as a comparison to validate the classification of designers on the basis of design quality on the grounds of design awards. The thesis will propose that each designer resorted to a constantly evolving genenc 'prototype' for the design of industrial buildings which helps reduce the search area for a design solution. Therefore relatively little time is required to analyse the problem at the beginning of the process before a suitable solution is formulated. The prototype allows the designers to quickly identify aspects of the design that might prove problematic and hence require specific attention. The strategy is then one of rational analysis to solve specific problems rather than an extensive rationally based development of the whole design. Hence the supporting role of rationally based techniques during the design process. Finally, the familiarity that comes from using a design method based on a constantly evolving prototype provides the designer with greater 'outcome certainty', in that they have an increased likelihood of achieving a successful design as the potential of the prototype is known to the designer at the commencement of the project

Abstract:
In this thesis work we present CLIK, a new, automated, remote attack on the control logic of a programmable logic controller (PLC) in industrial control systems. The CLIK attack modifies the control logic running in a remote target PLC automatically to disrupt a physical process. We implement the CLIK attack on a real PLC. The attack is initiated by subverting the security measures that protect the control logic in a PLC. We found a critical (zero-day) vulnerability, which allows the attacker to overwrite password hash in the PLC during the authentication process. Next, CLIK retrieves and decompiles the original logic and injects a malicious logic into it and then, transfers the infected logic back to the PLC. To hide the infection, we propose a virtual PLC that engages the software the virtual PLC intercepts the request and then, responds with the original (uninfected) control logic to the software.

Abstract:
The business performance management (BPM) framework helps an organization continuously adjust and successfully execute its strategies. BPM helps increase flexibility by providing managers with an early alert about changes and, as a result, allows faster response to such changes. The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) framework provides a basis for self-assessment and a systems perspective for managing an organization's key processes for achieving business results. The MBNQA framework is a more comprehensive framework and encapsulates the underlying constructs in the BPM framework. The objectives of this dissertation are fourfold: (1) to validate the underlying relationships presented in the 2008 MBNQA framework, (2) to explore the MBNQA framework at the dimension level, and develop and test constructs measured at that level in a causal model, (3) to validate and create a common general framework for the business performance model by integrating the practitioner literature with basic theory including existing MBNQA theory, and (4) to integrate the BPM framework and the MBNQA framework into a new framework (BPM-MBNQA framework) that can guide organizations in their journey toward achieving and sustaining competitive and strategic advantages. The purpose of this study is to achieve these objectives by means of a combination of methodologies including literature reviews, expert opinions, interviews, presentation feedbacks, content analysis, and latent semantic analysis. An initial BPM framework was developed based on the reviews of literature and expert opinions. There is a paucity of academic research on business performance management. Therefore, this study reviewed the practitioner literature on BPM and from the numerous organization-specific BPM models developed a generic, conceptual BPM framework. With the intent of obtaining valuable feedback, this initial BPM framework was presented to Baldrige Award recipients (BARs) and selected academicians from across the United States who participated in the Fall Summit 2007 held at Caterpillar Financial Headquarter in Nashville, TN on October 1 and 2, 2007. Incorporating the feedback from that group allowed refining and improving the proposed BPM framework. This study developed a variant of the traditional latent semantic analysis (LSA) called causal latent semantic analysis (cLSA) that enables us to test causal models using textual data. This method was used to validate the 2008 MBNQA framework based on article abstracts on the Baldrige Award and program published in both practitioner and academic journals from 1987 to 2009. The cLSA was also used to validate the BPM framework using the full body text data from all articles published in the practitioner journal entitled the Business Performance Management Magazine since its inception in 2003. The results provide the first cLSA study of these frameworks. This is also the first study to examine all the causal relationships within the MBNQA and BPM frameworks.

Abstract:
The new reality is about connectivity. From social media to collaborative tools in work environments, people and their devices are highly intercommunicated. This reality also affects the manufacturing industry, which has been developing standards to keep up with technology and take advantage of it. These technologies are encompassed in what has been called Industry 4.0. Out of all the technologies, apart from artificial intelligence, the main drives of Industry 4.0 are considered by many studies augmented reality (AR) and industrial internet of things (IIoT). This thesis suggests that these drivers have been mostly tested either in an isolated fashion or with limited connectivity. The main objective is to explore the advantages of connecting AR, IIoT, and the main source of information in the manufacturing process: product lifecycle management (PLM) systems. Two sub-objectives are extracted from the main one: to study of value created from real-time role-dependent AR information displaying, and to study how the connection AR-IIoT-PLM can affect developing and deploying times of AR experiences. To achieve the mentioned objectives, a case of study is built, and the combined system implemented on it. Following design and creation methodology, an artefact is created, and conclusions are extracted from the design, implementation, and usage stages. Main results are an improvement in developing and deploying time of AR experiences, along with guidelines to extract as much value as possible from the implementation of a combined system of this sort. This thesis includes a discussion section, where the potential of the system is explained and framed within the near future of manufacturing companies.

Abstract:
South African labour laws have undergone tremendous amendments before and after independence. This paper focuses on the development after independence, therefore section 34 of the Constitution of 1996, provisions of the Labour Relations Act of 1995 and other laws which deal with labour matters and regulate the labour relations and disputes in the country will be considered. The labour laws in South Africa provide inter alia for the dispute resolution mechanisms, the manner on which disputes should be handled by different organs which are empowered to do so. My focus will be to see how alternative disputes resolution processes of conciliation and arbitration in the Eastern Cape Province aim to transform the South African and global labour market by promoting an integrated simple, quick but efficient and inexpensive dispute settlement services in order to reduce the back log of cases, maintain labour peace, promote democracy at workplace with the view of advancing economic and social justice.

Abstract:
Every Friday, movie listings fill up with new films seeking to attract as many moviegoers to the cinema as possible, but only a few movies will manage to stay on the big screen for weeks. During the 1980s, many researchers used mathematical models to attempt to determine the factors which help to make a film successful, and so mitigate the high risks involved in the movie business. The main challenge of this study has been to adapt to the Catalan cinema industry the criteria which have been used to analyze other film industries, above all the American industry. Following the work of the researchers consulted, data from 267 new Catalan productions from between 2008 and 2014 was obtained, and a multivariable analysis was carried out to evaluate all the possible factors which might contribute to the success of a film. The results obtained are revealing, and help to clarify the reality of film production in Catalonia, providing scientific evidence to back up the subjective knowledge of the sector. Thus the value of the study lies in employing a statistically proven method to reinforce previously subjective knowledge, and provide security when making key decisions in film-making. To summarize the conclusions obtained in this study, it can be stated that budgetary factors and production company characteristics are the aspects which play the most important role in the success of a Catalan film, followed by the recognition generated by the main awards, the Goyas – and the Gaudi awards in Catalonia – which also have a major impact on the number of moviegoers who choose to see the film. By contrast, movies’ presence at festivals has no influence on the national success of a film but is decisive in its international career. As for artistic factors, it has only been possible to establish a direct relationship between the language in which the film is made and the results at the box office. The rest of the factors introduced in the analysis have been discounted, given that they do not contribute any significant information to the model.

One of the most important tasks that business leaders undertake in order to achieve a superior market position is strategic planning. Beyond this obligation, business owners desire to maximize profit and maintain steady growth. In order to do this, resources must be invested in the most efficient way possible in order to achieve performance excellence. Adjusting business operations quickly, however, especially in times of economic uncertainty, is extremely difficult. Business leaders therefore need insight into which elements of organizational improvement are most effective in order to strategically invest their resources to achieve superior performance in the most efficient way possible. This research examines the results of companies which have a demonstrated ability to achieve performance excellence as defined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Malcolm Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. This research examined award-winning applications to determine common input factors, compared the business results of a subset of those award-winners with the overall market for a time-frame of 11 years, and then investigated the profitability, liquidity, debt management, asset management, and per share performance ratios of award-winners compared with their industry peers over 11 years as well. The main focus of this research is to determine whether participation in performance excellence best practices have created value for shareholders and business owners. This objective is achieved through the analysis of performance results of award winning companies. This research demonstrates that the integration of efforts associated with performance excellence is in-fact advantageous.

Recently, the development of green industry has become an activity worldwide. Both economic growth and environmental sustainable development are emphasized to be carried out simultaneously. Since 1999, the Ministry of Economic Affairs Industrial Development Bureau has established Industrial Sustainable Excellence Award to improve on the professional technologies, usage of environmental resources and the management of enterprises. After 2001, it is clear that steering toward the goal of sustainable development is the key to success. The difference in performance between the award winners and non- award winners is an issue which researchers can devote vast energy into. This research proposes a framework for the performance evaluation of enterprises and benchmarking of sustainable development with Industrial Excellence Award winners as the subject matter. Financial performance analysis is carried out both quantitatively and non- quantitatively to understand if the implementation of sustainable development impact positively on the financial performance of enterprises. Besides, the influence of Industrial Excellence Award on the competitive advantages and sustainability of enterprises is studied as well. Based on the results of competitiveness analysis of sustainable development for enterprises, four scenarios are detected. First, enterprises which implement sustainable development have higher financial performance. Second, achieving Industrial Excellence Award is guaranteed to improve the reputation of enterprises but not necessarily to improve the financial performance of enterprises. Third, characteristics of different industries are not responsible for the differences in the impact of sustainable development on the financial performance of enterprises which have achieved Industrial Excellence Award. Forth, successful implementation of sustainable development influence positively on the performance of enterprises, regardless of scale. In the best practice of implementing sustainable development, this research chooses the enterprise with the most outstanding performance from each industry to undergo analysis. In addition, this research studies benchmark enterprises to find out the competitive advantages of implementing sustainable development and provide suggestions for future sustainable development.

Abstract:
Managing the consumption of non-renewable and/or limited resources has become an important issue in many different settings. In this dissertation we explore the topic of resource cost aware scheduling. Unlike the purely scheduling problems, in the resource cost aware setting we are not only interested in a scheduling performance metric, but also the cost of the resources consumed to achieve a certain performance level. There are several ways in which the cost of non-renewal resources can be added into a scheduling problem. Throughout this dissertation we will focus in the case where the resource consumption cost is added, as part of the objective, to a scheduling performance metric such as weighted completion time and weighted tardiness among others. In our work we make several contributions to the problem of scheduling with non-renewable resources. For the specific setting in which only energy consumption is the important resource, our contributions are the following. We introduce a model that extends the previous energy cost models by allowing more general cost functions that can be job-dependent. We further generalize the problem by allowing arbitrary precedence constraints and release dates. We give approximation algorithms for minimizing an objective that is a combination of a scheduling metric, namely total weighted completion time and total weighted tardiness, and the total energy consumption cost. Our approximation algorithm is based on an interval-and-speed-indexed IP formulation. We solve the linear relaxation of this IP and we use this solution to compute a schedule. We show that these algorithms have small constant approximation ratios. Through experimental analysis we show that the empirical approximation ratios are much better than the theoretical ones and that in fact the solutions are close to optimal. We also show empirically that the algorithm can be used in additional settings not covered by the theoretical results, such as using flow time or an online setting, with good approximation and competitiveness ratios.

This thesis presents a novel system framework for industrial Internet of Things to support mission-critical applications with delay constraints. While most IoT systems aim at providing massive connectivity for delay-tolerant applications, few works address delay-sensitive IoT applications. Besides, due to the unplanned stop and the unpredictable sensor behaviors by the various environment, it is costly to improve performance by tracking the IoT system. To re-duce the drop rate and improve the quality of service, we adopt Network of Thing (NoT) framework. In this thesis, we focus on the association issue between an aggregator and sensors. For sensors with different priorities in the network, we design the association rule to improve the delay performance and ensure the transmission quality. For flexible associating decision, we predict the possible association scheme with the different environments by generating an artificial event. We implement NoT system by utilizing message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol to dynamically update the association scheme. We describe how the delay data from the Industrial IoT system can be collected and the mission-critical data can be extracted. We evaluate the delay performance of different artificial events, which are generated by neural network with corresponding association scheme. Our results demonstrate that the proposed system framework can improve the delay performance of industrial IoT by 40% to 60%.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) can greatly improve the production efficiency due to the real-time data analysis and predictive maintenance. These facts imply that there will be a multitude of IIoT devices, which will boost more value to the industry if being properly used. The transmission frequency of the IIoT devices is time-varying depends on diverse events of different applications. This characteristic can easily pose the network overload challenge caused by the heavy uplink (UL) traffic, which results in intolerable transmission delay and service unavailability due to packet loss and retransmissions. Consequently, the stringent communication requirements of IIoT applications cannot be satisfied. To relieve network overload caused by simultaneous transmissions, group-based MTC is an attractive approach in which cluster heads (CH) aggregate the collected data from cluster members (CMs) and relay the aggregated data to the IIoT server through the base station. As the CH plays an important role in group-based MTC, it is essential to understand how the aggregation parameters affect the system performance. To this end, we propose an end-to-end delay model to analyze the delay performance of group-based MTC. We show that the amount of data to be aggregated, which is called aggregation factor, is a decisive parameter for the delay performance. Then we present an approximate analysis to find the optimal aggregation factor that can minimize the overall delay. From testbed experiments, we confirm the accuracy of the proposed model and provide insights for the design of delay-aware IIoT. Consequently, a learning-based adaptive aggregation factor mechanism has been proposed. The results show that our mechanism can decrease 62% average delay compared with the fixed aggregation factor scheme.

Winning Third-Party Organization (TPO) endorsed awards including product quality type and corporate image type for firms’ brand equity has gained popularity in recent years. However, few studies in the marketing literature have investigated whether the accumulation of TPO endorsed awards correlates with a firm’s market value measured by Tobin’s q. This study uses a three-year (2008-2010) cross-sectional data from a sample of 128 publically listed companies in Taiwan’s PC & Peripherals, Telecommunication and Photoelectric industries to examine this relationship. These companies are major winners of TPO endorsed awards in Taiwan. Data were collected from Market Observation Post System of Taiwan Stock Exchange, TEJ data bank and UDN data. The empirical results indicate that the aggregated TPO endorsed awards of the company image type significantly correlates with a firm’s Tobin’s q, but those of the product quality related type do not demonstrate such a significant correlation.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) which had created Taiwan’s economical miracle continued to play an important role in the upcoming economic development of the country. They not only narrowed the gap between suburban and rural areas but also provided the necessary satellite industry structure to support large corporations. Due to Taiwan’s joining World Trade Organization (WTO), SMEs had to upgrade infrastructures, strengthened marketing channels, identified correct research and development directions, cultivated employees’ talents, and adequately understood their situations and advantages to maintain their competitiveness to achieve continual growth. By conducting literature review and in-depth interviews of five enterprises located in Taichung Industrial Park that received National Award for SMEs, the authors identified the problems these companies faced and the strategies they applied to solve these problems. The environments SMEs faced could be categorized as external and internal ones and the problems they encountered and the strategies they applied were as follows: 1. External environment: External environment included both political economical and industry changes. The problems SMEs encountered were legislative restrictions, cost increases, recruiting difficulties, competition changes, and government and education ignorance of industry practices. The strategies SMEs applied included negotiation of trade tariff, offshore migration, and industry structure change and improvement. 2. Internal environment: Internal environment included the growths of administrators, staffs, and enterprise owners of the enterprises. The problems SMEs encountered were the competence of administrative level, the shortage in R&D human resources, the lack of brands, and the dispersion of the market. Abstract:
Since the beginning of the 21st century, service-oriented architecture (SOA) has emerged as an advancement of distributed computing. SOA is a framework where software modules are developed using straightforward interfaces, and each module serves a specific array of functions. It delivers enterprise applications individually or integrated into a more significant composite Web services. However, SOA implementation faces several challenges, hindering its broader adaptation. This thesis aims to highlight three significant challenges in the implementation of SOA. The abundance of functionally similar Web services and the lack of integrity with non-functional features such as Quality of Service (QoS) leads to the difficulties in the prediction of QoS. Thus, the first challenge to be addressed is to find an efficient scheme for the prediction of QoS. The use of software source code metrics is a widely accepted alternative solution. Source code metrics are measured at a micro level and aggregated at the macro level to represent the software adequately. However, the effect of aggregation schemes on QoS prediction using source code metrics remains unexplored. The inequality distribution model, the Theil index, is proposed in this research to aggregate micro level source code metrics for three different datasets and compare the quality of QoS prediction. The experiment results show that the Theil index is a practical solution for effective QoS prediction. The second challenge is to search and compose suitable Web services with- out the need for expertise in composition tools. Currently, the existing approaches need system engineers with extensive knowledge of SOA techniques. A keyword-based search is a common approach for information retrieval which does not require an understanding of a query language or the underlying data structure. The proposed framework uses a schema-based keyword search over the relational database for an efficient Web service search and composition. Experiments are conducted with the WS-Dream data set to evaluate Web service search and composition framework using adequate performance parameters. The results of a quality constraints experiments show that the schema-based keyword search can achieve a better success rate than the existing approaches. Building an efficient data architecture for SOA applications is the third challenge as real-world SOA applications are required to process a vast quantity of data to produce a valuable service on demand. Contemporary SOA data processing systems such as the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) lack scalability. A data lake, a productive data environment, is proposed to improve data ingestion for SOA systems. The data lake architecture stores both structured and unstructured data using the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). Experiment results compare the data ingestion time of data lake and EDW. In the evaluation, the data lake-based architecture is implemented for personalized medication suggestion system. The data lake shows that it can generate patient clusters more concisely than the current EDW-based approaches. In summary, this research can effectively address three significant challenges for the broader adaptation of SOAs. The Theil index-based data aggregation model helps QoS prediction without the dependence on the Web service registry. Service engineers with less knowledge of SOA techniques can exploit a schema-based keyword search for a Web service search and composition. The data lake shows its potential to act as a data architecture for SOA applications.
