Abstract:
Nowadays a production enterprise is inconceivable without the automation of all its processes – technological, production, and managerial. The efficiency of an enterprise largely depends on high-quality data processing within a single information space. The introduction of an integrated automated management system for an industrial enterprise, consistent with the business model, will eliminate many of the problems arising during creation, integration and development of automated systems, will create an effective enterprise management system and will reduce future costs of production modernization. Current trends of digital transformation increase the demand for an integrated business management system model, that would include a model of an integrated information management system as an integral part of it. The study aims to develop a reference functional model of mining enterprises, including a comprehensive vision of business, production and technological processes and their IT support. The model proposed is based on the analysis of existing international industry approaches to automation, as well as the experience and best practices of automation of mining enterprises. The methodological foundations of the research include enterprise architecture approach (including the concept of service-oriented architecture) and authors' function-oriented approach for engineering the IT architecture. The article describes a reference functional model of a mining enterprise, on the basis of which the structure of the mining enterprise IT-architecture functional structure is determined. The function-oriented approach for engineering IT-architecture as a reflection of the business functional structure is a good example of the symmetry phenomena in enterprise management. Further research will be devoted to the issues of designing an information exchange model and a data architecture model for the mining value chain and its individual parts in interconnection, as well as reflecting end-to-end processes of mining enterprises in the IT architecture based on the developed model for determining the boundaries of functional blocks of information systems

Abstract:
Digital competence used to be a confusing concept, until recently when some researchers coined a comprehensive definition of digital competence and formulated a conceptual framework in an SME context. However, the framework was only at a conceptual level and required to be tested with the empirics of a qualitative or quantitative study. By an abductive qualitative approach, this research explored existing theories on digital competence and formulated a new digital competence framework in Swedish manufacturing SME perspective. Moreover, with cross-sectional study design, this research explored the role of digital competence in the internationalization process of six Swedish manufacturing firms, which is unprecedented in academic literature. Our findings indicate that digital competence is an evolving concept which develops gradually with technological advancements and requires a combination of three integral components: i) Digital technologies (basic and advanced level digitalization), ii) Automation of organizational processes, iii) Human resources who have the latest digital skills and are duly motivated to use these skills. This research affirms that after attaining digital competence Swedish manufacturing SMEs can sustain a competitive advantage in their international markets and it successfully facilitates in the firm’s internationalization process.

Abstract:
Construction companies seek improvements for their management systems. Therefore, they need to apply concepts, methods and lean techniques for the identification and subsequent elimination or reduction of activities that do not add value to the final product. In this context, there are activities that contribute to the improvement of construction processes. They are best practices that seek to eliminate factors that create interruptions in processes that occur at construction sites. The objective of this research was to develop a didactic game that helps managers to make practical the use of activities that contribute to the improvement of structural masonry construction process, to stimulate flow production continuity in construction sites and the elimination of wastes. The methodology was divided into two phases. The first was the literature review, and the second was divided into five stages related to field research, that involve the procedures required for the development and validation of the tool proposed in this research. For this, the following tasks were carried out: exploratory study, list of best practices, development, validation and application of a checklist; development of didactic game and its validation by the application in a group dynamics, primarily with researchers and later with the managers of three of the six construction sites researched. As a result of the preparation of the best practices list, it was found that the neglect of most of these activities could result in the occurrence of making-do and consequently in rework. The application of checklist showed that the managers use best practices in their daily. The application of the game confirmed the information observed in the field and provided an overview of the process by managers. From that emerged the main contribution of this study, which was the conclusion that the game is a teaching tool that can be used to train professionals in the identification of strengths and weaknesses related to management activities in construction process of structural masonry elevation. Thus, it is expected that managers look at the tool as a practical instrument to identify best practices in the construction process and that in the future the tool can be applied in other processes.

Manufacturing requires a lot of manpower and equipment. Sudden disasters will inevitably cause severe loss to the manufacturer. Most widely available alert systems are unable to function in a real-time setting. A well designed network-based system, integrating hardware, software and networks, may fulfill the needs. This can be offered through a cloud-based service. This study propose an architecture for building a new generation alert system, based on the industrial automation monitoring system, incorporating sensor network technology to replace traditional human inspections to achieve effective early warnings. The proposed service will also assist companies to upgrade their management. Through well designed human-machine interface, massive data automatically collected through the senor network can be stored at a remote site. Effective use of the new data can result in new insights through mining of the “big data” that is unavailable before. The proposal simplified the operations, with three components, namely, installations of sensors, smart recorders for data collection and transmissions, and Web-based user interface for ease of use. In addition, this study also analyzed the possible business model, whereby the proposed system can generate enough value for the company. Two alternative service plans can be offered to customers. First, cloud-based service with service charge, in addition to sensor installations. Second, selling of the cloud-base system as a product so that customers can provide their in house service through a private cloud. The services can be customized to meet different customer needs. A feasibility study reveals the viability of the proposal.

Abstract:
From the late Sixties on, industrial development in Italy evolved through the spread of small and medium sized firms, aggregated in district networks, with an elevated propensity to enterprise and the marked presence of owner-families. Installed within the local systems, the industrial districts tended to simulate large-scale industry exploiting lower costs generated by factors that were not only economic. The districts are characterised in terms of territorial location (above all the thriving areas of the North-east and Centre) and sector, since they are concentrated in the "4 As" (clothing-fashion, home-decor, agri-foodstuffs, automation-mechanics), with some overlapping with "Made in Italy". How can this model be assessed? This is the crucial question in the debate on the condition and prospects of the Italian productive system between the supporters of its capacity to adapt and the critics of economic dwarfism. A dispassionate judgement suggests that the prospects of "small is beautiful" have been superseded, but that the "declinist" view, that sees only the dangers of globalisation and the IT revolution for our SMEs is risky. The concept of irreversible crisis that prevails at present is limiting, both because it is not easy either to "invent", or to copy, a model of industrialisation, and because there is space for a strategic repositioning of the district enterprises. The book develops considerations in this direction, showing how an evolution of the district model is possible, focusing on: gains in productivity, scope economies (through diversification and expansion of the range of products), flexibility of organisation, capacity to meld tradition and innovation aiming at product quality, dimensional growth of the enterprises, new forms of financing, active presence on the international markets and valorisation of the resources of the territory. It is hence necessary to reactivate the behavioural functions of the entrepreneurs.

Abstract:
AbstractRobot-based automation is still not widespread in small and medium-sized enterprises, since programming industrial robots is usually costly and only feasible by experts. This disadvantages can be resolved by using intuitive robot programming approaches like playback programming. At the same time, there are currently not automatized automatized, like fiber spraying. We present a novel approach in programming a robot system for fiber spraying processes, which extends a playback programming framework inspired by video editing concepts. The resulting framework allows the programming of also the periphery devices needed for the fiber spraying process. We evaluated the resulting programming framework to measure the intuitiveness in the use and show that the framework is not only able to program fiber spraying tasks but is also rather intuitive to use for domain experts.

Abstract:
AbstractIn many industries, traditional automation systems (operating technology) such as PLCs are being replaced with modern, networked ICT-based systems as part of a drive towards the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The intention behind this is to use more cost-effective, open platforms that also integrate better with an organisation’s information technology (IT) systems. In order to deal with heterogeneity in these systems, middleware platforms such as EdgeX Foundry, IoTivity, FI-WARE for Internet of Things (IoT) systems are under development that provide integration and try to overcome interoperability issues between devices of different standards. In this paper, we consider the EdgeX Foundry IIoT middleware platform as a transformation engine between field devices and enterprise applications. We also consider security as a critical element in this and discuss how to prevent or mitigate the possibility of several security risks. Here we address secure data access control by introducing a declarative policy layer implementable using Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE). Finally, we tackle the interoperability challenge at the application layer by connecting EdgeX with DIME, a model-driven/low-code application development platform that provides methods and techniques for systematic integration based on layered Domain-Specific Languages (DSL). Here, EdgeX services are accessed through a Native DSL, and the application logic is designed in the DIME Language DSL, lifting middleware development/configuration to a DSL abstraction level. Through the use of DSLs, this approach covers the integration space domain by domain, technology by technology, and is thus highly generalizable and reusable. We validate our approach with an example IIoT use case in smart manufacturing.

Abstract:
AbstractProduct Engineering Processes (PEPs) are used for describing complex product developments in big enterprises such as automotive and avionics industries. The Business Process Model Notation (BPMN) is a widely used language to encode interactions among several participants in such PEPs. In this paper, we present SMC4PEPl as a tool to convert graphical representations of a business process using the BPMN standard to an equivalent discrete-time stochastic control process called Markov Decision Process (MDP). To this aim, we first follow the approach described in an earlier investigation to generate a semantically equivalent business process which is more capable of handling the PEP complexity. In particular, the interaction between different levels of abstraction is realized by events rather than direct message flows. Afterwards, SMC4PEPl converts the generated process to an MDP model described by the syntax of the probabilistic model checking tool PRISM. As such, SMC4PEPl provides a framework for automatic verification and validation of business processes in particular with respect to requirements from legal standards such as Automotive SPICE. Moreover, our experimental results confirm a faster verification routine due to smaller MDP models generated from the alternative event-based BPMN models.

Abstract:
Factories have employed automation for nearly 100 years. With the launch of Industry 4.0 in 2011, operations have expanded their use of robots on an unprecedented scale. As of 2017, there were roughly 2 million industrial robots in use globally. By 2030, it's estimated that 20 million manufacturing jobs around the world could be replaced by robots. Yet, substantial hurdles remain before predicted level of automation can be realized. On the one hand, smart factories are almost exclusively multibillion-dollar enterprises. Their costs are simply too high for most manufacturers. On the other hand, intelligent machines are limited in what they can do because so many of the engineering tasks required to support them are still being done by people. Widespread use of automation requires expanding the use of artificial intelligence to manage data, create drawings, evaluate designs, and program machines.

Abstract:
Many today believe the world has entered the Third Industrial Age, during which technological improvements in robotics and automation will boost productivity and efficiency, implying significant gains for companies. These advancements have three biases: they tend to be capital-intensive (favoring those with financial resources), skill-intensive (favoring those with a high level of technical proficiency), and labor saving (reducing the total number of unskilled and semi-skilled jobs). The pundits speculate the economic impact on the job market will be significant and will present serious social and political challenges for society in growing inequality and the provision of safety nets to mitigate the consequences of disruptive technological progress. History has shown capitalist markets and business enterprises are incredibly efficient at turning technological advances into profitable businesses and providing incentives to discover new technologies. They succeed because companies that compete successfully with each other to provide benefits for clients are rewarded handsomely.
