Abstract:
Abstract Hefei Light Source II (HLS-II) is a vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron light source. The control system of HLS-II is a distributed system based on the experimental physics and industrial control system (EPICS). The alarm system of HLS-II is responsible for monitoring the alarm state of the facility and distributing the alarm message in time. It facilitates the operator to troubleshoot problem efficiently, so as to improve the availability of HLS-II. Phoebus/Alarms (Alarms) is the latest alarm software released in EPICS community. Based on Alarms, the alarm system of HLS-II is designed, developed and deployed. The alarm distribution strategy is designed from the perspective of the HLS-II operation mode, alarm severity and alarm representative to overcome alarm floods. The 3 ways to distribute the alarm message are added to the HLS-II alarm system, which include WeChat, SMS and web-based GUI. In order to configure alarm options efficiently and conveniently, an alarm configuration management tool is developed based on the MySQL database and Browser/Server architecture. The alarm system of HLS-II has been deployed since November 2021. The result indicates that the alarm system is effective and convenient to operate.

Abstract:
Industries in general need a reliable system for fault identification and alarm management. The high incidence of alarms can overload the operator, exposing him to conditions that may exceed their ability to perform effective actions, impairing his performance during his workday. In this context, the present paper proposes an approach for alarms rationalization based on process mining techniques. The alarm rationalization is in accordance to the alarm lifecycle management model suggested by ANSI / ISA-18 standard. The aim of this paper is to improve the alarm system through its rationalization, allowing an adequate organization and data layout of the whole set of alarms. Thus, it is expected a better interpretation and understanding of the industrial process. Performance metrics recommended by ANSI / ISA-18 standard are used. Such metrics are used for analyzing a database of alarms coming from an industrial plant. Preliminaries results have demonstrated the feasibility of the present approach. The results show that the use of the process mining technique can provide support on rationalization alarms, standing for a promising method in alarm management domain.

Abstract:
The issues of ensuring fire safety of industrial enterprises using automatic fire alarm systems is discussed in the article. The foreign and Russian experience of conducting assessment of the efficiency of automatic fire alarm systems is analyzed. Despite the improvement of the regulatory framework for automatic fire alarm systems, the creation of new devices and technologies for detecting fire hazards, the problem of improving the reliability of automatic fire alarm systems actuation remains relevant. Using the statistical data of the federal state information system «Federal data bank «Fires», the calculations were made of the efficiency of automatic fire alarm system actuation at the industrial facilities from 2016 to 2020. Various types of industrial objects are considered: industrial buildings; warehouse buildings (structures); buildings, industrial installations. Calculations of the efficiency of automatic fire alarm systems are based on determining the number of cases of implementation of various modes of its operation. The social and material consequences of fires are investigated considering actuation of the automatic fire alarm systems. When calculating the efficiency of automatic fire alarm systems, the belonging of production facilities to a certain type of property, risk category and branch of industry is considered. Studies showed that the highest efficiency is characteristic of production facilities that are in the federal ownership (90.9 %) and grows up with an increase in the risk category of the object of protection. Thus, for industrial facilities assigned to the category of high risk, the efficiency of automatic fire alarm system actuation for the period from 2016 to 2020 is 92.3 %. By the type of industry, the lowest efficiency of automatic fire alarm system actuation is observed at the fuel industry (62 %), as well as at the construction and shipbuilding enterprises (75 %).

Abstract:
In industrial practice, excessive alarms and high alarm rates are mostly generated from unreasonable settings to variable alarm thresholds, which have become the significant causes of impact on operation stability and plant safety. A correlation degree and clustering analysis-based approach was presented to optimize the variable alarm thresholds in this paper. The correlation degrees of variables are first obtained by analyzing correlation relationships among them. Second, the variables are grouped according to the gray correlation coefficients and clustering analysis, given the weight for fault alarm rate (FAR) in each group. An objective function about the FAR, missed alarm rate (MAR), and the maximum acceptable FAR and MAR is then established with variable weight. Eventually, based on an optimization algorithm, the objective function can be optimized for obtaining the optimal alarm threshold. Cases study of the Tennessee Eastman (TE) industrial simulation process and an actual industrial ethylene production process, in comparison to the initial situation, show that the method can effectively reduce FAR according to correlation degrees among variables in the system, and decrease the number of alarms with reduction rates of 40.5% and 35.3%, respectively.

Abstract:
In the United States, forklift accidents account for one in every six workplace fatalities (Bostelman and Shackleford, 2010). Backup warning devices such as tonal alarms and blue safety lights are commonly used to alert pedestrians of approaching forklifts. The purpose of this research is to identify worker’s perception on the effectiveness of two configurations of backup alarm systems: the level of nuisance perceived of these systems; and the importance of having a forward motion warning system. Results of this study indicate no statistically significant differences in the level of satisfaction between facilities using tonal backup alarms and facilities that use both tonal backup alarms along with blue safety lights. Additionally, results of this study indicate that the majority of the pedestrians and forklift operators sampled are in favor of having forward motion warning devices installed on forklifts.

Abstract:
In automated plants, particularly in the petrochemical, energy, and chemical industries, the combined management of all of the incidents that can produce a catastrophic accident is required. In order to do this, an alarm management methodology can be formulated as a discrete event sequence recognition problem, in which time patterns are used to identify the safe condition of the process, especially in the start-up and shutdown stages. In this paper, a new layer of protection (a Super-Alarm), based on the diagnostic stage to industrial processes is presented. The alarms and actions of the standard operating procedures are considered to be discrete events involved in sequences; the diagnostic stage corresponds to the recognition of the situation when these sequences occur. This provides operators with pertinent information about the normal or abnormal situations induced by the flow of the alarms. Chronicles Based Alarm Management (CBAM) is the methodology used in this document to build the chronicles that will permit us to generate the Super-Alarms; in addition, a case study of the petrochemical sector using CBAM is presented in order to build one chronicle that represents the scenario of an abnormal start-up of an oil transport system. Finally, the scenario’s validation for this case is performed, showing the way in which, a Super-Alarm is generated.

Abstract:
Improving the safety of human life is one of the main tasks of scientific and technological progress. A dangerous situation occurs when a person is in a dangerous area, i.e. in a space where constantly, periodically, or occasionally there are situations caused by factors that lead to gradual or instantaneous damage to human health. Fire is one of these situations. The safety of technical systems is solidly linked to their reliability. In firefighting automation, the main purpose of calculating reliability is to determine the probability of failure-free operation of the equipment of the system. The value obtained is subsequently used to calculate individual fire risk. To ensure technical safety, it is a universal practice to use system approach and system analysis, which allows us to consider technical security as a system. One of the specific characters of determining the reliability of computer-aided systems is the difference between the reliability indicators of the main elements of the system and the automation system as a whole. The more complex the system, the less reliable it is. The article considers the main problems leading to the efficiency loss of particular items of equipment included in the technical safety systems and formulates the tasks and methods for their reliability assessment. The research features the fire safety system of an industrial building, which includes an automatic fire alarm system and a warning and evacuation system. The paper contains an example of calculating the reliability for an automatic fire alarm system. The authors propose some ways of improving the existing system. The results are processed and presented by the main indicators of system reliability, which are the failure rate and the failure-free operation probability for particular items of equipment and the system as a whole. The research revealed that a manual detector, used as a standby item in the system of thermal and smoke fire detectors, makes it possible to reduce the failure rate of the system and increase the average time of failure-free operation. Thus, it improves the indicators of the system reliability and increases the safety of industrial buildings.

Within the exploitation of the automated production systems (APS) framework, supervision and monitoring take the dependability into account. In order to reach these objectives, a method is being developed at the Laboratoire d'Automatique et d'Informatique Industrielle de Lille in a supervision and monitoring framework. The main functions are detection, diagnosis, modes management and faults recovery. This paper focuses on two kinds of modelling: functional modelling and behavioural modelling. On the one hand, these models are used to implement the diagnosis and the modes management functions. On the other hand, the complementarity of these models enables them to be used within the alarm processing system framework. Indeed, the design of intelligent alarm processing systems (IAPS) is a critical problem. One common problem is the number of alarms that operators have to manage. This paper focuses on the problem of the management of avalanches of alarms after the occurrence of failures in a complex process. To deal with this problem, different types of alarm are defined from the functional and behavioural modelling of the process to be surveyed. Filtering rules, based on the concepts of validation and inhibition, are also proposed.

The automatic analysing station located just downstream of the Basel urban area at Huningue, consists of an alarm station linking the automatic detection of certain important pollution parameters (T.O.C., hydrocarbons, heavy metals, pesticides, etc.). and the resulting alarms, to a working mathematical model of pollutant plume propagation, operating on the river between Basel and Strasbourg. This model is keyed to the real flow conditions of the Rhine, determined by life-size tracing operations (using coloured Rhodamine marker). A decisive factor in speeding up the transmission of alarm signals, this system allows, among other things, optimum management of the valves and locks communicating with the Rhine, in order to avoid the penetration of the pollutants into the ramifications of the hydrographic network feeding the groundwater table in Alsace. The alarm station put into service on the Rhine can look back on 10 years experience in the struggle against accidental pollutions which primarily occurred in the Paris area. There, an important alarm network consisting of eight automatic analysing stations was set up on the rivers Seine, Marne and Oise to protect the most important drinking water supply of France which provides water to more than 4 million inhabitants.

Cette thèse s’intéresse à la prédiction de la qualité de produits et à l’amélioration de la performance des alarmes de diagnostics au sein d’une usine de semi-conducteurs. Pour cela, nous exploitons l’historique des alarmes collecté durant la production. Premièrement, nous proposons une approche de modélisation et d’estimation du risque de dégradation du produit final associé à chaque alarme déclenchée en fonction du comportement d’activation de celle-ci sur l’ensemble des produits durant la production. Deuxièmement, en utilisant les valeurs de risque estimées pour toute alarme, nous proposons une approche de prédiction de la qualité finale d’un lot de produits. Grâce à l’utilisation des techniques d’apprentissage automatique, cette approche modélise le lien entre les événements d’alarmes des processus et la qualité finale du lot. Dans la même veine, nous proposons une autre approche basée sur le traitement du texte d’évènement d’alarmes dans le but de prédire la qualité finale du produit. Cette approche présente une amélioration en termes de performances et en termes d’exploitation de plus d’information disponible dans le texte d’alarme. Enfin, nous proposons un cadre d’analyse des activations d’alarmes en présentant un ensemble d’outils d’évaluation de performances et plusieurs techniques de visualisation interactive plus adaptées pour la surveillance et l’évaluation des processus de fabrication de semi-conducteurs. Pour chacune des approches susmentionnées, l’efficacité est démontrée à l’aide d’un ensemble de données réelles obtenues à partir d’une usine de fabrication de semi-conducteurs<br>This thesis addresses the prediction of product quality and improving the performance of diagnostic alarms in a semiconductor facility. For this purpose, we exploit the alarm history collected during production. First, we propose an approach to model and estimate the degradation risk of the final product associated with each alarm triggered according to its activation behavior on all products during production. Second, using the estimated risk values for any alarm, we propose an approach to predict the final quality of the product's lot. This approach models the link between process alarm events and the final quality of product lot through machine learning techniques. We also propose a new approach based on alarm event text processing to predict the final product quality. This approach improves performance and exploits more information available in the alarm text. Finally, we propose a framework for analyzing alarm activations through performance evaluation tools and several interactive visualization techniques that are more suitable for semiconductor manufacturing. These allow us to closely monitor alarms, evaluate performance, and improve the quality of products and event data collected in history. The effectiveness of each of the above approaches is demonstrated using a real data set obtained from a semiconductor manufacturing facility

Abstract:
Collision warning systems represent a promising means to reduce rear-end crash involvement. However, these systems experience failures in the real-world that may promote driver distrust and diminish drivers' willingness to comply with warnings. Recent research suggests that not all false alarms (FAs) are detrimental to drivers. However, very few studies have examined how different alarms influence different driving populations. The purpose of this research was to examine how younger, middle-aged, and older drivers (with and without UFOV impairments) evaluated and responded to four different alarm contexts - false alarm (FA), nuisance alarm (NA), unnecessary alarm (UA) and true alarm (TA) - when they did and did not receive warnings. FA contexts represent out-of-path conflict scenarios where it is difficult for the driver to identify the source of the alarm. NA contexts represent out-of-path conflict scenarios that occur in a predictable manner that allows drivers to identify the source of the alarm. UA contexts are transitioning host conflict scenarios where the system issues an alert but the situation resolves itself before the driver needs to intervene. TA contexts represent in-host conflict scenarios where the situation requires the driver to intervene to avoid a collision. The results suggest that alarm context does matter. Compared to response data that differentiates FA and NA from UA and TA, subjective data shows greater sensitivity and differentiates between all four alarm contexts (FA Younger drivers indicated a high degree of confidence in their own ability across the different conditions. While they adopted a similar response pattern as middle-aged drivers during the TA contexts, these drivers responded less frequently than middle-aged and older drivers during the UA context. Diminished hazard perception ability and the tendency to consider these situations less hazardous likely account for the fewer responses made during these situations by younger drivers. Older drivers with and without UFOV impairments indicated similar hazard ratings for UA and TA contexts, yet drivers with UFOV impairments responded less frequently in both alarm contexts. Diminished hazard perception ability, slower simple response times, and degraded contrast sensitivity likely account for the fewer and slower responses. Interestingly older drivers with impairments did respond more frequently when warned during the TA context. They also rated FAs and NAs more positively than the other driver groups. The results of this study suggest applying signal detection theory without concern for the alarm context and driver characteristics is insufficient for understanding how different alarms influence operators and that subjective data can inform design. Researchers are encouraged to combine multiple perspectives that incorporate of both an engineering and human perspective.

Les systèmes d'alarmes jouent un rôle critique dans la bonne exploitation des installations industrielles modernes. Cependant, dans la plupart de ces systèmes, les alarmes ne sont pas toujours traitées correctement par les opérateurs car il y a régulièrement beaucoup trop d’alarmes à gérer, notamment lors des avalanches d’alarmes. Pour réduire le flux d'alarmes, notre approche consiste à détecter des redondances entre alarmes qui pourraient être supprimées. Pour atteindre cet objectif, nous recherchons dans un premier temps les adjacences fréquentes entre les alarmes contenues dans un historique. Ceci est réalisé en adaptant l’algorithme de recherche de motifs fréquents AprioriAll. Nous explorons également une seconde méthode consistant à trouver des précédences systématiques. Pour les découvrir, nous identifions les relations de domination et de mutuelle dépendance contenues dans l’historique des alarmes. Pour faciliter l’analyse experte, les relations découvertes sont traduites sous la forme d’un réseau de Pétri.Ces deux méthodes sont ensuite confrontées à un historique d’alarmes industriel fourni par General Electric. Les résultats obtenus montrent que nos deux méthodes permettent une réduction globale du flux d'alarmes qui est plus importante durant les avalanches<br>Alarm systems play an important role for the safe and efficient operation of modern industrial plants. However, in most of industrial alarm systems, alarm flows cannot always be correctly managed by the operators as they often turn into alarm floods, sequences of numerous alarms occurring in a short period of time. To reduce the alarm flows, this report focuses on detection of redundant alarms that could be removed. This objective is met by, first, looking for frequent adjacency in the alarm log. To identify them, the frequent pattern mining algorithm AprioriAll is adapted. Another way to find potentially redundant alarms is to look for systematic predecessors. To discover them, dominations and mutual dependencies contained in the alarm log are identified. To ease this analysis, the discovered relations are depicted in the form of Petri nets.Both those methods are then tested against an industrial alarm log made available by General Electric. The results show that both methods allow a reduction of the alarm flow, with the biggest reduction being during alarm floods

With this advance, the amount of information that automation systems are subjected to increased significantly. The alarms generated by the monitoring equipment are a major contributor to this increase, and the equipments are usually deployed in industrial plants without a formal methodology, which entails an increase in the number of alarms generated, thus overloading the alarm system and therefore the operators of such plants. In this context, the works of alarm management comes up with the objective of defining a formal methodology for installation of new equipment and detect problems in existing settings. This thesis aims to propose a set of metrics for the evaluation of alarm systems already deployed, so that you can identify the health of this system by analyzing the proposed indices and comparing them with parameters defined in the technical norms of alarm management. In addition, the metrics will track the work of alarm management, verifying if it is improving the quality of the alarm system. Yes<br>In large industrial systems, alarm management is one of the most important issues to improve the safety and efficiency of systems in practice. Operators of such systems often have to deal with a numerous number of simultaneous alarms. Different kinds of thresholding or filtration are applied to decrease alarm nuisance and improve performance indices, such as Averaged Alarm Delay (ADD), Missed Alarm and False Alarm Rates (MAR and FAR). Among threshold-based approaches, variable thresholding methods are well-known for reducing the alarm nuisance and improving the performance of the alarm system. However, the literature suffers from the lack of an appropriate method to assess performance parameters of Variable Threshold Alarm Systems (VTASs). This study introduces two types of variable thresholding and proposes a novel approach for performance assessment of VTASs using Priority-AND gate and semi-Markov process. Application of semi-Markov process allows the proposed approach to consider industrial measurements with non-Gaussian distributions. In addition, the paper provides a genetic algorithm based optimized design process for optimal parameter setting to improve performance indices. In order to increase the spatial availability and spatial convenience, several illegal building and sheet metal houses were built in many cities. Furthermore, since the advance of construction technology and engineering method, the sheet metal houses become larger, more complex and diversify. These situations largely increased the hazard of fire, stopping people from getting out of the building and fire rescue. However, a key question is why the damage of fire still serious, even the buildings had erected fire equipment. First of all, the fire equipment could not prevent the occurrence of fire, it only could alarm people and extend the escaping time; Second, the fire equipment was designed for beating out the fire with fireman. Although the sprinkler system might beat out the fire immediately as fire occurrence, the factories did not require to set up sprinkler system. Therefore, a well-designed fire alarm system might decrease the damage of fire and achieve effective hazard management. In addition, integrating other components with the fire alarm system for more diversified and low-cost might promote more people to utilize this system for taking precautions against fire.

An intrusion detection system (IDS) works as an alarm mechanism for computer systems. It detects any malicious activity that happened to the computer system and it alerts an alarm message to notify the user there is malicious activity. There are IDS that are able to take action when malicious or anomalous networks are detected, which include suspending the traffic sent from suspicious IP addresses. The problem statement for this project is to find out the most accurate machine learning algorithm and the types of IDS with different placement strategies. When it comes to the deployment of a wireless network, IDS is not as easy a task as deploying a traditional network IDS. There are many unexpected complexities of the problem of reliable intrusion detection in a wireless network. The motivation of this research is to find the most suitable classification techniques that are able to increase the accuracy of an IDS. Machine learning is useful for the upcoming trend; it provides better accuracy in the detection of malicious traffic.

Poorly managed alarms and improper design of alarm system have contribute to major industrial incident. Some examples are fire explosion on Milford Haven, 24th July 1994 where it flooded by alarms at the rate of one every two or three seconds resulting operator cancelling those alarms due to the nuisance (Health and Safety Executive, 1997), other case was from Texas City Refinery explosion, 23rd March 2005 where the high level alarm was ignore while the secondary high alarm was faulty (BP Executive Summary, 2005), and recent incident of Fatal Gas Well Blowout in Pryor Trust gas well Pittsburgh Country 22nd January 2018 where the entire alarm system was disabled by rig personnel due to nuisance condition (U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board,2019). Banyu Urip facility have put significant effort on improving alarm effectiveness. This paper describes Banyu Urip alarm management workflow and improvement consisting of data collection, alarm analysis (identify bad actor), short term repair/improvement, alarm review &amp; rationalization, management of change process, re-evaluation of operating envelopes, and high focus for implementation and stewardship. Alarm management tools and dashboard significantly helps the process. There are 4 KPIs that periodically reviewed: number of alarm rate, standing alarm, shelved alarm and critical operating parameter. This paper also provide Banyu Urip plant alarm management journey that started by first cold eyes review found imbalance of 3 panel operator load. Reconfigure asset assignment significantly improve the alarm rate as well as plant stability. The journey continue by multiple approach depend on the case of alarm such as nuisance alarm and standing alarm consisting alarm rationalization, alarm suppression logic, equipment out Of service logic, time delay implementation, control loop tuning, and deadband setting. Other than that, manual shelving process also utilized for nuisance alarms short term action caused by equipment or sensor problem, as long as mitigation exists, communicated on every shift handover and directly followed up to maintenance order list. There are also some cases where known equipment issues waiting for long term resolution causing continuous alarms. Risk screening process help all parties aware on incremental risk during the interim period. Having above alarm management improvement workflow, CPF site team have able to reduce down the alarm rate to stable criteria (&lt;12 / hours) and standing alarm continue to decrease to 10/console. Finally, this paper also describes how alarm management practices can be also utilized as supplementary surveillance dashboard to improve plant reliability

Abstract:
Several regions of the world already have or are in the process of developing an early warning system (EWS) for earthquakes. As is well known, earthquakes cannot be predicted in the short term. However, an EWS is based on the principle that when a strong earthquake occurs, the initial seismic waves detected by seismographs near the epicentre can be quickly analysed. Once analyzed automatically, an alarm signal can be sent to more distant areas before damaging seismic waves arrive. This alert can then be used to take action before the seismic waves arrive (such as stopping industrial activities for example). In Canada, these technologies are being developed for the Pacific region and Eastern Canada. Quebec is particularly interesting because earthquakes of magnitude 5 are felt at great distances, which increases the warning time when an earthquake occurs. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) will lead this initiative, in partnership with provincial collaborators. The private sector will also be involved through the development of software and applications. NRCan is therefore reaching out to potential partners in such an earthquake warning system.
