Abstract:
AbstractBeginning with the 1980s, when the sustainability of the public pension systems became endangedered, many countries have developed their individual pension plans and/or occupational pension plans in order to supersede or support their public pension systems,. This study examines the impact of individual pension funds on the development of both debt securities market and stock market in Turkey during the period October 2006-May 2015, using Hatemi (2008) cointegration test and Toda and Yamamoto (1995) causality test with monthly data. We found that, in the long run, the private pension funds had positive impact on both development of debt securities market and stock market. Furthermore, causality appears to exist between the market for private pension funds, the debt securities market and the stock market.

Abstract:
The Crewstation Assessment of Reach (CAR) is a design tool for determining if a candidate population of operators or individuals can achieve vision and reach accommodation within a user-defined workspace. CAR has undergone four major updates since its creation in 1976. The latest version of the CAR model, CAfi-IV, can predict female as well as male population accommodation. Numerous experimental studies have validated individual components of CAR as well as validating CAR's ability to predict population accommodation. Plans are underway to further refine CAR submodels and also to integrate CAR with a CAD graphics package to assist users in constructing and evaluating crewstation designs.

Abstract:
The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine PK-12 teacher perceptions of an individual professional learning plan (PLP). Specifically, the researcher examined the perceived benefits of the PLP as well as the whether the PLP helped focus teacher learning. Additionally, the researcher examined teacher perceptions of learning activities within the context of the PLP, teacher intent to implement new learning, and perceived impact on teaching practice. Participants in this study were teachers from 16 schools in a single eastern Tennessee school district. All data were collected using an online survey distributed to 525 teachers resulting in a 44% return rate with 238 respondents. Data collected from 24 survey questions measured on a 4-point Likert-type scale were analyzed using single sample t tests. Findings indicate that regardless of level of experience or grade level taught teachers have significantly positive perceptions of PLPs as well as the associated PD activities. Findings also indicate teachers have significant perceptions of the application of their learning and significant perceived impact from PD within PLPs.

Abstract:
This research explores the responses of eleven teachers, drawn from teaching, managerial, policy, and union levels, to their involvement in the development and implementation of Teacher Review and Development (TRAD) and Individual Development Plans (IDP). Through a case study methodology that uses a phenomenological approach, this research found that TRAD and IDP had little credibility as tools of teacher development or appraisal for teachers because of a range of complexities that included the politicisation of the processes, a lack of financial and resource support, and varied quality control measures. The research elicited a list of criteria for successful design and development of appraisal processes. These are detailed in Chapter Five of the thesis. They are rigorous monitoring and modelling of the processes, clear goals with stated end dates and recognition for involvement, appraisal that is integrated in existing work practices and based on shared understandings of work value, the provision of resources and time targeted at the appraisal process, a commitment to identifying and acting on inefficiencies, appraisal that is focused on teacher development and not directly linked to salary "reward". The research concludes that authentic teacher review and development will not take place until teachers themselves take on the responsibility, as a professional group, external to their employer, for the design of teacher review and development.

Abstract:
The main goal of my study was to investigate how pupils in lower secondary school appreciate parent-teacher conferences with preparations as part of their learning process. The main issues were how written assessments affect the parent-teacher conferences and how pupils value teacher-led parent-teacher conferences compared to student-led parent-teacher conferences. A written survey-investigation was used in order to compare the attitudes of pupils from two different schools. One school used written assessments and teacher-led conferences; the other school did not use written assessments and had student-led conferences. My findings show: That a bigger part of the pupils receiving written assessments think that they are informed about their knowledge levels in relation to the requirements. That written assessments are not optimal to communicate to pupils how to improve their work. That a major part of pupils with lower grades did not prepare themselves for the student-led conferences and thus were difficult to involve in this type of learning. That the pupils in student-led conferences are more involved in the conversations but that there were no significant differences between the different types of conferences in the perspective of their learning processes.

Abstract:
Intelligibility is one of the major concerns among ESL learners due to its impact on their ability to communicate with native speakers of English (Derwing & Munro, 2005). Even though pronunciation is often addressed in classrooms, it is difficult to tackle all intelligibility issues relevant for each student. Therefore, it is crucial for ESL learners to spend some extra time outside of class improving their pronunciation. Faced with a daunting task of regulating and taking charge of their own learning, they often have questions with respect to what exactly they need to work on, what activities will help them achieve their goals, how they need to organize those activities, and how long they should practice until they can see results. In such an endeavor, issues like motivation to persist and put forth great effort arise and influence outcomes. In sum, many factors are in play when ESL learners strive to improve their intelligibility. The main purpose of creating Sofia’s ESL Pronunciation Lab is to guide ESL learners in improving intelligibility, while helping them feel confident and motivated about what they are doing. Thirty students participated in the pilot-testing phase of this project. They participated in six weeks of self-regulated instruction followed by the completion of a survey at the end of that period. The results show that Sofia’s ESL Pronunciation Lab accomplished its purpose. Students thought that the website guided them well in the creation and implementation of their own improvement plan. They also thought that the online guide was professional and informative. Several students gave constructive feedback to further enhance the website. Most suggestions were related to including more graphics and visuals as well as adding more content, such as examples and activities. Overall, students believed that the online guide was a helpful addition to the current instruction they were receiving as part of an intensive English language program of study.

Abstract:

The purpose of this article was to examine how students learn to use the Individual Development Plan (IUP) with written assessments as a tool for learning. The study is conducted according to an ethnographic approach. A total of 20 students, aged 13-14 years, participated. The production of data took place through participating observations, field notes and conversations. A qualitative content analysis was used for data analysis. The results of the analysis yielded the following codes: Clarification as a tool for learning; Difficult to understand as a tool for learning; Participation as a tool for learning and; Irrelevant as a tool for learning. Results of the study was coupled with an analytical model in which the concepts: integrated; mastered; and appropriated was in focus. The results showed that the students participated in the process of IUP with written reviews in varying ways. The type of participation they chose was dependent on how implemented, mastered and appropriated the practice with IUP with written judgments were.

Abstract:

Hammaräng, Anna Karin, and Inger Nyström. "Extra anpassningar i matematik : Hur tolkas och fungerar det?" Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för matematik (MA), 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-68842.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to investigate and create a vision of how individual teachers and teams of teachers understand the concept of special adjustments in Mathematics. Teachers' understanding of mathematical difficulties is important for which pupils get special adjustments and how they are designed.   The study examines and creates a view of understanding that has been developed since the amendment of the Swedish School Law in 2014. The approach of the study is hermeneutic and is based on a survey, studies of individual development plans and two focus group discussions with teams of teachers for students in the 3rd grade. The empiricism is interpreted from the mathematic didactics and the special pedagogical area, with special adjustments as the research area. The result is analyzed based on Goffman's theory front stage and inspired by the Grounded Theory analysis method.   The result shows that the teachers do not perceive a clear line between management and stimulus, and special adjustments. The teachers express they support the student in its starting-point. The teachers’ education is adjusted and individualized through the frame of ordinary education. The teachers do not see special adjustments as something new after the amendment of the law, rather as something that has been present in the education for a long time. At the same time the teachers need to modify their teaching and material more today. The special adjustments in Mathematics are explicitly target related, especially mathematic skills.  Working methods for the adjustments are not clarified.   In the individual development plans it is sometimes hard to determine if the input is a forward looking plan or a special adjustment. Special adjustments are documented and handled in different ways. The teachers’ experience the documentation as problematic and time consuming.   In the study it is possible to determine the power of working in teams. The teachers show an ambition of understanding and following the regulatory documents of the school.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine what teachers for younger pupils, think of the usefullness of individual development plans for children in grades 1-2. My experience is that children in grades 1-2 have difficulty understanding their individual development plan and that has been the starting point for my study. The study focuses teachers opinions and experiences of students participation in the creation of their individual development plan, students ability to take responsibility for their individual development plan and what the individual development plan contributes to current pupils progress. The results suggest that the greatest benefit of the individual development plans for students in grades 1-2 is the discussion around the plan and possibly this discussion could be a tool for students learning and understanding of their own learning process.Qualitative interviews were used to find out teachers opinions and the theoretical base used in the study is Strandberg´s interpretation of Lev Vygotsky´s theory.

Abstract:
This is a study on individual development plans (IDPs) in pre-school and their relationship with the teaching performed. Skolverket does not mention the IDPs in their steering documents for pre-school, and have in a separate memo discouraged from the use. Yet reports show that many of the pre-schools in Sweden are using IDPs. Teaching in pre-school is expected to be a mixture of care and learning without clear boundaries to the scientific topics pre-school aims to introduce children to. The purpose of this study is to investigate if the use of IDPs affect the teaching in pre-school. The questions this study will try to answer are: What is the purpose of IDP in pre-school? In who´s interest are IDPs used? Does the use of IDPs affect the educational methods used? The method chosen for this study is the triangulation method, which can give a more complete view on how the work with IDPs is performed. The study was performed on a private pre-school in central Sweden and uses analysis on the IDPs as well as the local educational plans together with qualitative interviews of both teachers and management. The results of the study show that the purpose of using IDPs mostly seems to revolve around measuring and raising the standard of work in pre- school. Furthermore, my interpretation is that it is the pre-schools interests, not the children’s, which control the goals set up for the children and the work. The pre-school in my study show in their local educational plan that they understand and follow the steering document from Skolverket regarding the methods of education.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter advances two main arguments: first, that tourism and migration are strongly inter-related, and that this is due to both their shared structural determinants (for example, transport infrastructures) in the form of scapes, and to the enfolded nature of mobility. That is, individual mobilities are enfolded over time, with earlier migration experiences influencing later patterns of tourism and vice versa. Second, it is argued that there are two main economic development outcomes of the migration-tourism nexus. The first is seen in the roles of individuals as consumers, that is, as tourists. Tourism expenditures convert into income and jobs so that migration flows have long-term implications for future tourism expenditure patterns. And secondly, migration plays an important role in the territorial redistribution of resources; migrants are bearers of knowledge, skills, competences and capital.

Abstract:
Abstract Agricultural development is looked at as a process in which the adoption of innovations plays an important role. In this context, there has been considerable interest in understanding how adoption processes work. This chapter starts from the observation that adoption has been conceptualised in most research and development efforts as a process at the level of individuals and/or individual households, resulting in the dominance of social-psychological modes of thinking. Drawing on case experiences and recent theories of innovation, this paper points towards the critical role that several types of interdependencies play in adoption processes, which leads to the conclusion that in many instances, adoption must be regarded as a collective rather than an individual process. It is therefore important to complement and re-orient our thinking about adoption and resort to more sociological and interactional concepts and explanations. After a discussion of relevant concepts, the chapter concludes with some reflection on how this perspective may inspire a different way of approaching two topical issues in the realm of agricultural innovation: scaling and ICT4Ag.

Abstract:
“Elite Strategies, Local Networks” outlines analytic frameworks for studying the clash of development strategies and local social networks. Fennell starts by laying out definitions of ethnic groups and how individual action and group solidarity interact. Next, one considers how individual and group dynamics shape material culture and the built environment. Finally, Fennell describes the influences of development plans on regional scales and spatial models for understanding economic structures and commodity chains. The theory framework described here provides a powerful, flexible way to analyze a great variety of cultural systems.

Abstract:
Sleep disorders are a significant and growing problem, both for the economy of the nation and for the physical and psychological well-being of individual sufferers. Physicians are under pressure to find ways of dealing with the backlog of patients. The purpose of this chapter is to investigate the operational, administrative, and medical environment within which sleep physicians diagnose patients with sleep disorders and develop an online support system that would efficiently gather patient history data and improve the effectiveness of patient-physician consultations, the diagnoses, and patients' self-management of any subsequent treatment plans. Investigations confirm that the physicians spend a large portion of the available consultation time on routine questions. In the new system, the patient information is captured by the patient completing an online questionnaire. Due to the reduction in time given for data collection, the physician can spend time with the patients discussing patient-specific symptoms and life-styles.

Abstract:
The boom of short-term rental (STR) intensifies the debate on overtourism because of some negative effects on destinations. Conversely, the STR was a way out in moments of crisis. Until now, only a few studies extend the analysis outside the limits of individual cities; that's why this case-study research was conducted by the analyses of Airbnb listings and the tourists' spatial distribution in Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA). For this purpose, this chapter uses two cartographic tools: 1) Airbnb listing from Inside Airbnb Project of Lisbon and 2) Geotaggers' World Atlas (map of sites that tourists took photos). Also, institutional Lisbon urban planning plans fed this study. Methodologically, combining the selected maps is a way to understand tourism spatial analysis by bringing together data on supply-side (rooms) and demand-side (distribution of tourists). The analysis demonstrates that a time-spatial distribution of visitors and the STR throughout the LMA could contribute to avoiding tourism congestion and proper distribution of economic benefits.

Abstract:
Abstract Earlier results show that female computer scientists show a lower self-efficacy compared to male colleagues. Similarly, gender-typical attributions, in the sense of gender stereotypes, are considered a disorder. As a result, a coaching program that supports computer scientists after a re-entry into professional life also, in a new orientation or with regard to management ambitions has been developed at the University of <blinded>. The measure strengthens computer scientists in their motivational resources and enables them to take advantage of professional opportunities. A scientifically founded analysis of their potential helps the coachees to become aware of their abilities and competences. The coaching program based on the potential analysis, takes important life goals of the coachees into account. Individual career plans are developed in coaching sessions, including a clear definition of the objective and implementation strategy. An open and modern corporate culture offers new opportunities of career paths for female computer scientists. If the company philosophy is based on appreciation of good performance, women in computer science are more motivated strengthen their career ambitions. Abstract:
The Office of Research, Development, and Technology of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the Volpe Center are continuing to evaluate new technologies for increasing the safety of passengers and operators in rail equipment. The results of vehicle-to-vehicle override, where the strong underframe of one vehicle, typically a locomotive, impacts the weaker superstructure of the other vehicle, can be devastating. Crashworthy components which can be integrated into the end structure of a locomotive have been developed to inhibit override in the event of collision. Recent research has resulted in the development of a design concept, including evaluation with finite-element analysis (FEA), fabrication, and component tests. The design concept developed incorporates two key components: a push-back coupler and a deformable anti-climber. Detailed designs for these components were developed and the performance of the designs was evaluated through large deformation dynamic FEA. Test articles were fabricated and dynamically tested to verify their individual performance characteristics. The tests were successful in demonstrating the required performance of the components. Test results were consistent with finite element model predictions of energy absorption capability, force-displacement behavior, and modes of deformation. Work is ongoing to retrofit these crashworthy components onto conventional locomotives and conduct full-scale dynamic impact tests of colliding cars, as well as colliding trains. Service tests will be performed to measure the impact speed at which push-back coupler triggering occurs. Vehicle-to-vehicle tests will be conducted to demonstrate the performance of the crashworthy components working together as an integrated system. The vehicle-to-vehicle tests will also allow an evaluation of the crashworthiness compatibility of a modified locomotive with a range of equipment, including conventional locomotives, cab cars, and freight cars. Train-to-train tests are planned to demonstrate incremental improvement, increased crashworthiness, compatibility, and serviceability. This paper describes the tests that are planned to demonstrate the behavior of these components when they are integrated into the end structure of a locomotive. The tests will demonstrate the in-service and crashworthiness performance of the modified locomotives. This research program endeavors to advance locomotive crashworthiness technology and develop the technical basis for generating specifications for push-back couplers and deformable anti-climbers.

Full text
Abstract:
A safety assessment code, DecDose, for decommissioning of nuclear facilities has been developed, based on the experiences of the decommissioning project of Japan Power Demonstration Reactor (JPDR) at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (now Japan Atomic Energy Agency). DecDose evaluates the annual exposure dose of the public and workers according to the progress of decommissioning of the plant, and also evaluates the public dose at accidental situations including fire and explosion. The public dose at normal situations during decommissioning is evaluated from the amount of radionuclides discharged from the plant to the atmosphere and the ocean. The amounts of radionuclides discharged depend on which and how activated and/or contaminated components and structures are dismantled. The amount is predicted by using the radioactive inventory given by the plant. The filtration efficiency of the ventilation system and decontamination factors of the liquid waste treatment system of the plant are also considered. Both of the internal dose caused by inhalation and ingestion of agricultural crops and seafood, and the external dose by radioactive aerosols airborne and radioactive deposition at soil surfaces are calculated for all of possible pathways. Also included in the external dose are direct radiation and skyshine radiation from waste containers which are packed and temporarily stored in the in-site building. For external dose of workers, the radiation dose rate from dismantling contaminated components and structures is calculated using the dose rate library which was previously evaluated by a point kernel shielding code. In this condition, radiation sources are regarded to be consisted of two parts; one is a dismantling object of interest, and the other is the sum of surrounding objects. Difference in job type or position is taken into account; workers for cutting are situated closer to a dismantling component, other workers help them at some distance, and the supervisor watches their activities from away. For worker’s internal dose, the radionuclide concentrations in air for individual radionuclides are calculated from a dismantling condition, e.g. cutting speed, cutting length of the dismantling component and exhaust velocity. A calculation model for working time on dismantling was developed using more segmented WBS (work breakdown structure). DecDose was partially verified by comparison with measured the external dose of workers during JPDR Decommissioning Project. The DecDose is expected to contribute to utilities in formulating rational dismantling plans and to the safety authority in estimating conservativeness in safety assessment of licensing application or risk-based regulatory criteria.

Abstract:
Today, the matters pertaining to regional and urban development in the EU are increasingly integrated into EU development plans and strategies. The EU actively facilitates regional development by supporting the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in the regions to contribute to employment, education and social integration. The strategic goal of the National Development Plan of Latvia 2021-2027 is to promote also regional development in Latvia in order to ensure long-term balanced growth in the country. Promoting entrepreneurship in the regions is of great importance, as Latvia is still one of the countries in the European Union experiencing unbalanced regional development and having socio-economic disparities. Consequently, financial performance and financial stability play an important role in sustainable business development. Rural entrepreneurs whose business is seasonal often lack an awareness of the role of financial leverage degrees, which could lead to making wrong decisions. Performing an assessment of the degrees of financial leverage could be useful not only in a situation when experiencing a business expansion but also when a business decline occurs, which is specific to rural entrepreneurship. A hypothesis of the present research is based on the authors’ opinion that by meaningfully applying the degrees of financial leverage, it is possible to enhance the financial performance of enterprises, which is particularly important for rural entrepreneurship. The aim of the research is to define the degrees of financial leverage – the degree of operating leverage (DOL), the degree of financial leverage (DFL) and the degree of combined leverage (DCL) – as measures of financial performance of enterprises and classify the principles of measure assessment in relation to whether the indicator percentage changes used in financial leverage calculations are positive or negative. The research employed the following methods: induction – to make scientific assumptions and identify similarities based on individual elements – and deduction – to logically systematize and explain empirical data. Applying the empirical and logical construction methods, the authors analysed six different theoretically possible situations, gave six different examples, defined and classified the principles of leverage degree assessment as different (positive and negative) in relation to the indicator percentage changes used in financial leverage calculations.

Abstract:
Appropriate use of the economic potential of the property is a challenge not only for planners and local authorities, it is also important for the individual owners. The biggest changes will result from changes in local planning, mainly from the conversion of agricultural land for residential purposes. However, legislative changes were created to protect this type of land against uncontrolled rotation. The changes made in recent years, complicated, or even impossible so far used the process of buying and subsequent conversion of the property, to the needs of the real estate market premises or services. The article presents the ideas of Land Use Efficiency on the example of transformation of agricultural real estate in the property held for development. Example simulations are an empirical transformation or division of property to sell them for housing purposes. These examples illustrated in the example of land developing, for whom the lack of local development plans or plans are developed recently. For this purpose, a qualitative and quantitative approaches, including decision trees to determine the criteria for the formation of real estate prices. The author draws attention to the possibility of the development of non-urbanized areas and the potential costs and financial returns resulting therefrom.

Abstract:
Experience over the last decade has demonstrated a gradual rise in global temperatures, which coupled with the unpredictable precipitation patterns (rainfall & Snow/ glacier melt are considered as important hydrologic process in the Himalayan basins), are expected to seriously affect the melt characteristics and further increase pressure on available water resources (both quantity and quality). The situation is being exacerbated intensified by the increasing water demands from agriculture, industry and rising population. However, current investigations reveal that there is a lack of a general framework for assessment. The major responsibility of the planning community is to adopt rational planning approach addressing the complexity of the system, yet it is appearing that the models used at various stages are not well developed to keep the same pace. This demands the acknowledgment and a better understanding of the dynamic inter-linkage and interdependence of the complex systems and sub-systems (namely physical, social, economic, ecology, environment, infrastructure, and institutional subsystems) using system dynamics technique. The aim of this paper is to develop a methodology for assessing the climate change and its impact on a region by demonstrating the inadequacy of sectoral and silobased planning approaches to address the complex sustainable development challenges whose interdependencies and inter-linkages transcend individual sectors and administrative borders. Further, this paper attempts to present the review of research done on the use of an integrated approach by using system dynamics technique in the context of evolving development plans. It concludes with extending the knowledge to support climate change adaptation and mitigation decisions to achieve sustainable development at the regional scale.

Febrian, F. "Managing Oil and Gas Project Value By Prime (Pertamina Investment Management Engine)." In Digital Technical Conference. Indonesian Petroleum Association, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.29118/ipa20-bc-88.

Full text
Abstract:
Oil and gas companies are facing an enormous challenge to create value from mature fields. Moreover, price volatility presents a massive impact on project uncertainties. Therefore, robust portfolio management is essential for oil and gas companies to manage critical challenges and uncertainties. The objective of this study is to develop a robust portfolio model to assist top management in oil and gas companies to drive investment strategy. PRIME (Pertamina Investment Management Engine) has been built to visualize advanced oil and gas project portfolio management. The engine observes the relationship between risk-and-return as the main framework drivers. The profitability index is endorsed as a parameter to envisage the investment effectiveness of individual projects. Correspondingly, the risk index is a manifestation of multi-variable analysis involving subsurface uncertainty and price. A nine clusters "tactical board" matrix is provided as the outcome of PRIME to define generic strategy & action plans. The PRIME analysis leads to a dual theme of perspective: both macro and micro-scale. The macro-scale discovers a diversification of strategy and scenario development to achieve long-term objectives. Whereas, micro-scale perspective generates a detailed action plan in a particular cluster as a representation of the short and mid-term corporate strategy. Several strategies and action plans have been recommended, including advanced technology implementation, new gas commercialization, additional incentives in the Production Sharing Contract, tax management renegotiation, and project portfolio rebalancing

Abstract:
The aim of promoting gender equality and women’s rights as integral parts of development efforts is enshrined in the key strategies and plans of many organizations. This is the case for the individual affiliates that comprise Oxfam International (OI), and the Oxfam confederation as a whole. This report sets out to assist Oxfam to better understand and learn from the Confederation’s work in this area to date. The purpose of the report is to provide an initial mapping of work on transformative leadership for women's rights (TLWR) in order to offer suggestions, impetus and a programmatic framework for the development of an ambitious global program on TLWR. It is intended to complement and drive Oxfam’s efforts to bring about the transformation of the pervasive gender inequality that limits women’s wellbeing, confidence and potential, reproduces negative masculinity traits, and contributes to the inequity dominant in contemporary societies.

Masters, Geoff. Time for a paradigm shift in school education? Australian Council for Educational Research, November 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.37517/91645.2020.1.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis of this essay is that the current schooling paradigm is in need of review and that the answer may lie in a shift in how we think about teaching and learning. Under the prevailing paradigm, the role of teachers is to deliver the year-level curriculum to all students in a year level. This mismatch has unfortunate consequences for both teaching and learning. Currently, many students are not ready for their year-level curriculum because they lack prerequisite knowledge, skills and understandings. The basis for an alternative paradigm and a 'new normal' is presented. The essay addresses concerns raised about changes to curriculum, including that: changing the structure of the curriculum will mean abandoning year levels; teachers will be unable to manage classrooms in which students are not all working on the same content at the same time; some students will be disadvantaged if students are not all taught the same content at the same time; a restructured curriculum will result in ‘streaming’ and/or require the development of individual learning plans; a restructured curriculum will lower educational standards; and it will not be possible to do this in some subjects.

Full text
Abstract:
The transportation studies literature recognizes the relationship between accessibility and active travel. However, there is limited research on the specific impact of walking and cycling accessibility to multi-use paths on active travel behavior. Combined with the culture of automobile dependency in the US, this knowledge gap has been making it difficult for policy-makers to encourage walking and cycling mode choices, highlighting the need to promote a walking and cycling culture in cities. In this case, a clustering effect (“you bike, I bike”) can be used as leverage to initiate such a trend. This project contributes to the literature as one of the few published research projects that considers all typical categories of explanatory variables (individual and household socioeconomics, local built environment features, and travel and residential choice attitudes) as well as two new variables (accessibility to multi-use paths calculated by ArcGIS and a clustering effect represented by spatial autocorrelation) at two levels (level 1: binary choice of cycling/waking; level 2: cycling/walking time if yes at level 1) to better understand active travel demand. We use data from the 2012 Utah Travel Survey. At the first level, we use a spatial probit model to identify whether and why Salt Lake City residents walked or cycled. The second level is the development of a spatial autoregressive model for walkers and cyclists to examine what factors affect their travel time when using walking or cycling modes. The results from both levels, obtained while controlling for individual, attitudinal, and built-environment variables, show that accessibility to multi-use paths and a clustering effect (spatial autocorrelation) influence active travel behavior in different ways. Specifically, a cyclist is likely to cycle more when seeing more cyclists around. These findings provide analytical evidence to decision-makers for efficiently evaluating and deciding between plans and policies to enhance active transportation based on the two modeling approaches to assessing travel behavior described above.

Abstract:
This report describes an online course developed to support education systems to build an aligned and sustainable approach to integration of 21st Century Skills (21CS). 21CS are those skills that are considered particularly important to succeed in today’s knowledge-based society in which innovation and technology are predominant. Prominent examples include critical thinking, creative thinking, and collaboration, and such skills need to be better understood in order for them to be integrated. While different countries may have their own frameworks or priorities surrounding 21CS, a consistent approach to integration can still be achieved with a shared understanding from all stakeholders within the system. The course objectives focused on supporting countries to develop a strategic plan for 21CS integration, providing resources to aid that plan, and building capacity to implement the plan. The specific learning objectives were to: Understand components and steps leading to 21CS alignment; Conduct a needs analysis, identifying which steps are currently being met, and which steps need more attention; Develop a strategic plan, identifying which steps are to be prioritized and in which order; Gain insights from other education systems from reflections on successful developments and lessons learned; and Engage in discussion within education systems and with other countries about the emerging area of skills integration, as well as identify future directions. Course participants joined from across 16 Asia Pacific countries and from the Education Quality and Assessment Programme for the Pacific Community (EQAP). The course comprised of eight modules that were spread over three weeks, with content hosted online through the Moodle platform. Each module consisted of pre-recorded video content (30-60 minutes) and team and/or individual activities. The modules were supported by three live sessions that allowed participants to ask questions and share reflections in real time. The course concluded with a webinar that consisted of presentations that were delivered by one member from each Core Strategy Team who shared their team’s strategic plan and reflections from this course.

Abstract:
This master thesis explores the challenges for waste management business models in the field of textiles regarding the requirements of the circular economy, as well as improvement potentials in the current framework conditions. It is concerned with the research question: "Is it advisable to change the frame-work conditions at meso or macro level, with regard to business models for waste management companies in the textile sector that are oriented towards the requirements of the circular economy, and - if so - in what way?” The approach of the study is based on the delta analysis of the e Society for Institutional Analysis at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. It compares the target state of the normative requirements with the actual state of the textile and waste management framework conditions and attempts to identify the gaps (the delta). Based on the delta, it develops approaches that are intended to help reduce the gaps. The thesis develops three business models for the target year 2025 in different areas: an exchange platform for sorters, recyclers and designers, an automatic sorting plant and a plant for fibre-to-fibre recycling of mixed materials. It is becoming clear that these business models cannot meet the target requirements for the circular economy. The analysis identifies the remaining gaps in the framework conditions as the main problem. For example, insufficient innovation impulses and the lack of competitiveness of secondary raw materials inhibit the actors from applying and using new technologies and business models. Restricted access to knowledge and information, as well as a lack of transparency between the actors, also prove to be problematic. In order to answer the research question, the study recommends altering the framework conditions at meso and macro level. It proposes a platform for cooperation between designers, the introduction of a material declaration system and an eco-design guideline for textiles as possible development options. In addition, this work offers a matrix of criteria to help the actors test and improve their new waste management business models regarding their suitability for the circular economy. The analysis is carried out from an outsider's perspective on the entire textile industry. It therefore cannot cover and deal with all aspects and individual circumstances of each player in detail. The necessary changes in the framework conditions that have been identified can therefore be used as a basis for further investigations.

Abstract:
The U.S. national parks have experienced significant climate-change impacts and rapid, on-going changes are expected to continue. Despite the significant climate-change vulnerabilities facing parks, relatively few parks have conducted comprehensive climate-change vulnerability assessments, defined as assessments that synthesize vulnerability information from a wide range of sources, identify key climate-change impacts, and prioritize vulnerable park resources (Michalak et al. In review). In recognition that funding and planning capacity is limited, this project was initiated to identify geographies, parks, and issues that are high priorities for conducting climate-change vulnerability assessments (CCVA) and strategies to efficiently address the need for CCVAs across all U.S. National Park Service (NPS) park units (hereafter “parks”) and all resources. To help identify priority geographies and issues, we quantitatively assessed the relative magnitude of vulnerability factors potentially affecting park resources and values. We identified multiple vulnerability factors (e.g., temperature change, wildfire potential, number of at-risk species, etc.) and sought existing datasets that could be developed into indicators of these factors. To be included in the study, datasets had to be spatially explicit or already summarized for individual parks and provide consistent data for at least all parks within the contiguous U.S. (CONUS). The need for consistent data across such a large geographic extent limited the number of datasets that could be included, excluded some important drivers of climate-change vulnerability, and prevented adequate evaluation of some geographies. The lack of adequately-scaled data for many key vulnerability factors, such as freshwater flooding risks and increased storm activity, highlights the need for both data development and more detailed vulnerability assessments at local to regional scales where data for these factors may be available. In addition, most of the available data at this scale were related to climate-change exposures, with relatively little data available for factors associated with climate-change sensitivity or adaptive capacity. In particular, we lacked consistent data on the distribution or abundance of cultural resources or accessible data on infrastructure across all parks. We identified resource types, geographies, and critical vulnerability factors that lacked data for NPS’ consideration in addressing data gaps. Forty-seven indicators met our criteria, and these were combined into 21 climate-change vulnerability factors. Twenty-seven indicators representing 12 vulnerability factors addressed climate-change exposure (i.e., projected changes in climate conditions and impacts). A smaller number of indictors measured sensitivity (12 indicators representing 5 vulnerability factors). The sensitivity indicators often measured park or landscape characteristics which may make resources more or less responsive to climate changes (e.g., current air quality) as opposed to directly representing the sensitivity of specific resources within the park (e.g., a particular rare species or type of historical structure). Finally, 6 indicators representing 4 vulnerability factors measured external adaptive capacity for living resources (i.e., characteristics of the park and/or surrounding landscape which may facilitate or impede species adaptation to climate changes). We identified indicators relevant to three resource groups: terrestrial living, aquatic living (including living cultural resources such as culturally significant landscapes, plant, or animal species) and non-living resources (including infrastructure and non-living cultural resources such as historic buildings or archeological sites). We created separate indicator lists for each of these resource groups and analyzed them separately. To identify priority geographies within CONUS,...
