Alexander, Virna Greer. "A capacity building assessment of TB Care Association : a case study." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50551.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2006.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Non-profit organisations play an increasingly important role in our society as they often represent community interests. The ability of the non-profit sector to perform effectively has become more critical. In order to maintain their value and effectiveness they require continuous renewal. The increased demand placed on this sector as it partners with government to deliver basic services to the community has amplified the need for this renewal process. The non-profit sector is constantly required to develop new ways of building its capacity in an attempt to meet its challenges. Despite the emphasis placed on the importance of capacity building, the term itse~ is frequently too expansive to be meaningful to decision makers. This paper attempts to develop a working definition of capacity building and assess the capacity building levels of TB Care Association. TB Care Association, founded in 1929, provides a service to tuberculosis patients and their families. Over the last decade, the organisation has moved from being a welfare organisation to a developmental health promotion organisation. The survey conducted on TB Care Association indicates that the scores obtained by the organisation coincide with the organisation's stage of development according to Korten (Mukasa, 2003). The results further revealed that fund raising, over dependence on government funding, lack of succession planning and human resources strategies are potential issues that could impede organisational growth and development.

Albanese, Francesca Claire. "Decision-making in the housing association sector : the case of asset management." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2007. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/3206/.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a rapid expansion in the role and s1ze of the housing association sector in England since 1979, driven by changes in policy agendas. In the past ten years the problem of 'low demand' housing has also been an issue for housing providers in certain areas of the North and Midlands. Attention has been drawn to the asset management strategies of housing associations, however relatively little is known about the process by which stock investment decisions are made. This thesis investigates the decision-making behaviour of three housing associations, with a focus upon power and knowledge in the decision making process. Using the context of asset management and low demand housing it examines how and why decisions are made within the three case studies. Drawing on two decision-making models, the political-bureaucratic (Pettigrew 1973) and behaviourist (Cyert and March 1992) models, the study develops an analytical framework derived from Foucault's relational concept of power and Clegg's 'circuits of power'. By adopting a qualitative approach the research explores current decision-making practices through the use of semi-structured interviews, focus groups and documentary analysis. The empirical evidence suggests that the concept of power is integral to understanding how decisions are framed and then made. However, power is a complex concept and housing associations are devising their asset management strategies in a shifting external environment. Different agencies are significant, depending on the commercial strength, geographical base, scale and degree of maturity of the association in question. The analytical framework enables power to be traced within each case study through examining the organisational tactics and 'game playing' in place. But it also identifies constraints with the 'relational' concept of power, suggesting that where power resides is also important. Power is also closely linked to knowledge, and each case study used information selectively as an expression of power relations. In response to the greater commercialisation of the sector housing associations' approach to asset management is changing. Some are grasping at these opportunities, whereas others are finding such pressures in tension with their original mission. Some larger associations are becoming 'learning organisations' and it is anticipated that the more successful agencies in this group will become increasingly autonomous from the Housing Corporation and other regulatory bodies in their approach to asset management due to these changes.

Storman, Anders, and Elin Storman. "Inter-organizational knowledge management : A case study in a Swedish economic association." Thesis, Högskolan Dalarna, Företagsekonomi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:du-30405.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this case study is to understand how inter-organizational knowledge management is conducted in an economic association by analysing how different actor representatives perceive the inter-organizational collaboration. Design/methodology/approach The method of this study is qualitative, with a single case study of an economic association in Dalarna, Sweden. The interviews were of semi-structured character. A total of nine respondents were interviewed; four respondents from private member organizations, three respondents from public member organizations and two respondents employed by the economic association. Findings and conclusion Six themes were found that together answers the purpose of this study. These themes are personalization, codification, collaboration, conditions, capabilities and challenges. The personalization strategy from the knowledge management framework by Hansen et al (1999) is suggested to be the main strategy in the case of the economic association, while the codification strategy is the supporting strategy working in relation to each other. In order to use those strategies in this interorganizational context, four other themes are added in a model created by the authors of this study. The four additional themes need to be taken in consideration and as the theme capabilities points out; the inter-organizational collaboration gives not only challenges, but also opportunities for the participating organizations. Furthermore, the conditions and the reasons for collaborating can be used for improving the structure of an inter-organizational collaboration. Practical Information A Swedish economic association can be described as a legal entity which involves a minimum of three partners, with a common interest and where all members of the economic association are required to participate in the activities of the economic association. Originality/Value This study contributes to the field of inter-organizational knowledge management by providing insight from a Swedish economic association perspective. There is an apparent gap pointed out between theory driven and practical driven research, where this single case study aims to contribute to the practical field of applying inter-organizational knowledge management perspective into a real case scenario. The case is particularly interesting to study since there are 33 organizations involved in knowledge management, with knowledge bases of both private and public sectors, small- and middlesized organizations and from different branches.

Van, Huyssteen Hannes. "The influence of a performance management programme on the achievement of organisational and individual goals : a case study." Thesis, Port Elizabeth Technikon, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/63.

Full text
Abstract:
Many organisations are continuously searching for methods which can be used to improve performance. One such method is by means of implementing a performance management programme. This research study addresses the influence that a performance management programme has on the achievement of organisational and individual performance. To achieve this objective a comprehensive literature study was performed to determine the views on performance, and on performance management programmes. The study also included an investigation into the extent to which a performance management programme should be aligned with organisational and individual goals. Questionnaires, developed from the literature study, were distributed amongst randomly selected respondents, in order to determine the extent to which a specific organisation manages performance, in line with the guidelines provided by the literature study. The information obtained from the questionnaires were compared with the guidelines provided by the literature study in order to identify shortcomings in the influence that the performance management programme has on the achievement of organisational and individual goals at the selected organisation. The final step of this study entailed the formulation of recommendations. Three of these recommendations are regarded as critical to ensure the successful improvement of performance by means of a performance management programme: Firstly, it is of utmost importance that training and development, and the necessary resources to achieve objectives is provided. Secondly, feedback forms an integral part of a performance management programme. Those who provide feedback, need to acquire the necessary skills, so as to ensure that both positive and negative feedback is given to employees, which could ultimately enhance performance. Thirdly, the success of a performance management programme resides with both management and employees. Management need to be committed to the programme, and the well-being of their employees. Management also needs to be able to eliminate problems that negatively influence performance. On the other hand, employees need to realise that a performance management programme is not only linked to pay, but also the development of each individual, and the improvement of performance.

Tang, Li. "Towards optimal management of health information users' feedback: the case of the canadian pharmacists association." Thesis, McGill University, 2012. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=110348.

Full text
Abstract:
There is increasing attention to information users' feedback comments as they can be used to improve information resources. In contexts where information resources are rich in knowledge, optimal user feedback management is crucial for the information provider to make sure that users' information needs are met.In this dissertation, I worked with the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA), which regularly uses health professionals' feedback to improve its publications. The CPhA wants an appropriate process to enable user feedback management in an effective and efficient manner. Thus, the present research addresses the overarching question "How can user feedback management be optimized for the CPhA?" The problem of how to optimize the management of user feedback was conceptualized in three parts: (1) the feedback comments, (2) the feedback management process, and (3) the factors affecting the development and implementation of optimal user feedback management in the organizational setting. The conceptual framework is derived from information studies, management science and organizational studies. A participatory action research approach was taken to conduct an organizational case study, using qualitative methods such as interview, observation, and document analysis.Research findings provide empirical evidence revealing four types of value of pharmacists' feedback comments to the CPhA, nine key issues in its user feedback management process, and twenty six factors affecting the innovation of user feedback management. Main contributions of this dissertation are as follows: this study empirically examined the usefulness of user feedback comments based on a value perspective in philosophy; two conceptual frameworks were proposed and demonstrated as relevant to studying information use and the related innovation in an organizational setting; and lessons have been learned from a comprehensive examination of the factors that affect innovation processes related to organizational information use.

Riechman, Jesse Avery. "The Southeastern Illinois Prescribed Burn Association: Spearheading Land Management Coalitions in the Midwest." OpenSIUC, 2012. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/894.

Full text
Abstract:
Fire in Midwestern ecosystems historically has provided many benefits, including promoting forest succession, maintaining wildlife habitat and reducing fuel loads. The Southeastern Illinois Prescribed Burn Association (SIPBA) is the only association of its kind in southern Illinois, designed to reintroduce prescribed fire to landowners in a practical context. The objectives of this research project were: 1) Interview members and crewpersons to collect data on the formation, maintenance, and future of SIPBA, 2) Outline the most common/salient issues driving landowners and stakeholders concerning the use of prescribed fire on their land in southern Illinois, and 3) Provide a conceptual model of the results to serve as a guide for future development of publicly conducted and implemented prescribed burning activities across southern Illinois and, ultimately, the Midwest. This study was implemented by semi-structured interviews of 28 key members of SIPBA. The responses from this population were collected and coded using NVivo 9 qualitative analysis software (NVivo 9 2011). Results indicate that challenges include stubborn remnants of the "Smokey Bear" attitude from the U.S. Forest Service anti-fire campaign, and that liability for an escaped wildfire is a reality for both the individual and for the association. In spite of these and other challenges identified by participants, landowners see SIPBA as a cost-effective solution to their land management needs. The results were interpreted as guidance for future dialogue between landowners and stakeholders and state and federal agencies in implementing prescribed burning programs. Implications include: "fire sells itself." Relatively little effort is needed to attract interest and recruit membership, and the benefits of a prescribed burn are easily evident. Alleviating concerns of the risks associated with fire is a primary objective for the organization, and there is a feeling of "safety in numbers" among membership. Finally, outside funding appears to be the limiting factor for both the capacity and potentially the longevity of the association, meaning that the development of a sustainable funding scheme could allow prescribed burn associations to remain in the Midwest. This case study of SIPBA membership is intended to facilitate cooperation between landowners and local burn associations, and also to serve as a model for the formation of future associations in similar areas of the Midwest.

Abstract:
Almost every day, we see and hear about disasters impacting individuals and households in communities worldwide. Impacts experienced include loss of life and injury, loss of property, and more. Disasters are often devastating for those who experience them. It is for this reason that preparedness is advocated by national and international organizations such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the United Nations. And, it is for this reason that researchers have often attempted to assess how prepared people are. Yet, what is this thing they call preparedness? What does it look like? What is involved in becoming a wholly prepared person? One might have assumed that organizations like FEMA and researchers would have addressed these fundamental questions prior to recommending that people become prepared or measuring how prepared people are, but that is not the case. The absence of an understanding of what preparedness is and entails is a critical theoretical gap with significant practical implications. This research explored the basic issue of what preparedness means and entails to people in Fako Division, Cameroon?a place threated by many hazards and which has experienced many disasters. From the analysis of the 33 interviews conducted in this study, the researcher found that preparedness is a dynamic state of readiness that is dependent on context, a social process, and a process of completing activities to save lives and minimize the effects of disasters. In addition, the researcher found that Cameroonians view a wholly prepared person as a) one who would have knowledge about hazards and what to do about them, b) one who would engage others, including their families and neighbors, in discussions about activities related to hazards and what to do about them, and c) one who would engage in activities to minimize loss from hazards, sustain themselves in the face of hazards, and flee from hazards. The findings from the interview data synch to a large extent with what is implied, but not clearly stated, in the existing research literature. The researcher address this synchrony and posit a definition of preparedness and identify the theoretical components of preparedness.

Aitken, James M. "Supply chain integration within the context of a supplier association : case studies of four supplier associations." Thesis, Cranfield University, 1998. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/9990.

Full text
Abstract:
The last three decades have seen a continuous interest from academics and practitioners in the development of theory and best practice methods in the field of supply chain management. Most of the evidence gathered within this management research area has been biased towards the role of the assembler/buyer in leading and integrating the supply chain. The role of the supplier has been of a passive recipient of the buyer's development plans and actions. Another additional bias in researching supply chain exchanges has been the single end approach of the investigations. Access difficulties have limited researchers to interviewing only one end of the buyer-supplier exchange. The purpose of this study was to overcome the aforementioned research biases and therefore, contribute to the understanding of the supply chain integration process from both a buyer's and supplier's perspective in the same exchange. The forum which was selected to conduct this research was that of the supplier association. The supplier association being defined as a group of a company's most important suppliers brought together on a regular basis for the purpose of co-ordination and development. Development through the deployment of best practice techniques in an open and co-operative environment. Against this open environment access was gained to both ends of the same exchange. Within this context a grounded, theorygenerating approach was applied to the data collected in four supplier association case studies. Through constant comparison and coding of data from multiple buyer-supplier exchanges within the same context several findings were made. The fmdings of the research are expressed as a series of propositions, tentative theoretical frameworks and a series of enabler/inhibitor factors to integration. The propositions relate supply chain improvements to the roles performed by the participants of the exchange in the context of a supplier association and the assembler's competitive environment. The tentative models depict the six stages in the organisational development of a supplier association, the trajectory of best practice knowledge within a supply chain exchange and the strategies employed by suppliers to manage their buyer's improvement intentions. Finally the enablers and inhibitors grounded from the case studies provide a guide to the relational factors which can influence the integration of a companies supply chain.

Davis, Joseph Benjamin Jr. "Social Cognition Within Complex Systems| A Descriptive Case Study of How Product Support Managers Experience Public-sector Defense Acquisition Environments." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10840971.

Full text
Abstract:

This qualitative, descriptive case study explored the social learning process within complex systems as described by product support managers (PSMs) assigned to acquisition programs within the Naval Air Systems Command. The research questions asked how individuals, as influenced by their values and structure, shape their interactions and behavior in a complex environment. Nine PSMs for major acquisition and sustainment programs were referred by senior leaders and participated in the study.

Data were collected through in-depth interviews that were transcribed to capture the PSMs’ experiences and then synthesized into contextual and social learning profiles. The findings resulted in seven themes. (1) PSMs operate in complex, dynamic, and variably resourced environments that are highly dependent on interaction and result in uniquely executed programs. (2) The highly structured environment and functionally oriented structure diminish the authority of the individual and present barriers to interaction. (3) The highly structured and boundary-rich environment limits information flow and presents difficulty in communication and developing routines that align meanings, value orientations, and shared understanding across those boundaries. (4) PSMs attempt to adjust, increase, and routinize interactions but often react to emerging needs with limited authority and resources, which often leaves short-term and least helpful alternatives. (5) PSMs leverage key relationships as bridges of information but often receive limited feedback to resolve short-term issues to complete tasks. (6) PSMs are aligned with organizational goals and values to improve user outcomes and speed of delivering products, but there is value incongruency between expectations and what they want to do to achieve those outcomes. (7) PSMs experience role ambiguity, as they are torn between how much they want to develop the team and interactions versus becoming an expert and accomplishing tasks.

The study concluded that PSMs are effectively leveraging different operating system views to maximize the variety of the small alternatives they have; countering the power of the system through meaning making, developing their unique abilities (as well as their team’s) and trying to reduce their isolation; and increasing the available space for social learning to make progress through trial and error and satisficing.

Full text
Abstract:
Though turnover researchers have called for a deeper understanding of the temporal and contextualized process of individual voluntary turnover, little empirical progress in this direction has been made. Adopting Price's (1977) dynamic conceptualization of turnover as moving from one social system to another, and drawing upon knowledge across organizational, social psychological and psychological domains, this exploratory thesis uses in-depth topical life histories to examine individual experiences with stay/leave decision processes in their construed context.
Findings challenge longstanding assumptions of linearity and continuity in turnover decision processes, as well as the conventional wisdom that utility-maximizing logic underlies these decisions. The data suggest that the pursuit of context-self congruence is a driving force in stay/leave decision processes, and that self-concept, emotions and psychological states may be under-studied influencers of these decisions. Results further uncover decision process characteristics previously rendered inaccessible to researchers, due to the predominant use of correlational studies in turnover research. These characteristics include: a) pivotal points of transition; b) the story lines that underlie influencing factors; c) the nature and role of context; and d) the consequences of engaging in these decision processes, for participants and for their workplaces, regardless of the outcome.
This idiographic study, using a purposive sample from a single population of Quebec physicians, is intended to provide turnover researchers with a starting point for cross-group retrospective and longitudinal comparisons. It also aims to stimulate hypothesis generation that accounts for time and the contextual conditions under which particular factors are likely to affect the turnover decision. From a practical viewpoint, this thesis begins to answer the call from Canadian and Quebec Health Care Human Resource specialists for a deeper understanding of the psychosocial aspects of Canadian healthcare worker turnover and retention (British Columbia Office of the Auditor General, 2004; Dubois & Dussault, 2002).

Abstract:
The lack of knowledge regarding the perception of risks in agile project management is evident in research. With this knowledge, this study sets out to address this issue and close the gap in knowledge regarding this issue by identifying the individual perception of risk by a project leader, SCRUM master, and two system developers, and comparing the individual appetite matrices to a unified appetite matrix created by a Delphi panel. A case study at an IT consulting firm, working with several projects in parallel, in Sweden is conducted. A risk register is used to collect the data, with the principle of assisting in creation of the risk appetite matrices. The result shows that the individual risk appetites differ significantly from the group’s unified risk appetite. The group showed itself far more risk aggressive than the individual appetite which was risk aversive in relation to the group’s appetite. The lack of RM practices is evident in smaller IT firms such as these, as there are no clear standardized approaches to the mapping or classification of risks; a far more informal approach is taken.

Markham, Paul. "The application of real options to renewable energy investments in South Africa: the case of solar energy technology for small businesses and individual homeowners." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/29791.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a growing interest in renewable energy generation projects due to environmental and sustainability concerns. However, initial costs and uncertainties caused by a number of factors can render renewable energy projects unattractive when subject to conventional financial assessment. The overall benefits of renewable energy technologies are often not well understood and consequently are often evaluated to be less effective than traditional technologies. From the moment that the energy sector abroad started a deregulation process, with a high level of competitiveness and associated increased market uncertainty, traditional evaluation techniques became insufficient to properly deal with these additional risk and uncertainty factors. Consequently, the way investors evaluate their investments require more sophisticated evaluation techniques. Initial research suggests that the value of renewable energy projects can be enhanced by the application of real options theory. In addition to revealing the benefits that renewable energy projects provide when employing real options, analytical results indicate that real option analysis is a highly effective means of quantifying how policy planning uncertainty, including managerial flexibility, influences renewable energy development. However, real option literature regarding renewable energy generation projects is limited and the theory requires further development to take advantage of more flexibility value within renewable energy projects. Literature is particularly limited in terms of small businesses and individual homeowners and worthy of analysis. This study attempts to address this issue. This study shows that real option analysis is useful, in the face of numerous uncertainties, in assisting South African homeowners and small businesses in the six largest metros and Eskom when considering an investment in a solar PV system. Within these six metros and Eskom three different tariff structures are offered, some of which encourage such investments while others don’t, thus forcing the latter to purchase expensive battery systems and consequently making the investment somewhat ineffective. Investments in solar PV systems are relatively costly and so, before committing, one needs to be certain that the system will be cost effective. In this study, it is shown that there is strong evidence that real option analysis is, not only useful in determining whether such an investment is cost effective, but also in assisting with the timing of such investments. This could be crucial for success. The findings of this study have theoretical implications in terms of the efficiency of real option analysis in the South African energy sector, and thus provide a contribution to real option literature in this sector. They also have practical insights for investors, both homeowners and small businesses in the South African context, who are looking to invest in a solar PV system. The study starts with an introduction and background to energy generation and then presents a literature review concentrating on the use of real options as an appropriate valuation method for renewables. Thereafter, the hypothesis is stated and the data sample and research methodology discussed. One of the limitations of this study was the unreliable data and the difficulty finding it, which could give rise to self-selection bias. Finally, the results and a brief analysis are presented and then, in conclusion, there is a discussion on the limitations of the study and suggestions for further research.

Ph.D.
The focus of this dissertation is imperfectly competitive sports labor markets and the effects of league labor policy on player mobility, compensation, and job location choice. The analyses conducted herein contributes primarily to a broad area of research within sports economics that generally uses changes in league labor rules to examine employer monopsony power and the validity of the Invariance Principle, which states that the distribution of playing talent in a sports league is invariant to the ownership of the rights to players’ services. After a critical review of the literature and some background on the National Basketball Association (NBA), a broad-to-narrow approach is used to present evidence from three empirical essays. Essay one examines the effects of 40 years’ worth of institutional change on competitive balance in the NBA. Essay two investigates the effects of more recent free agency rules on player mobility and pay. Finally, essay three narrows the focus a bit further to the effects of nonwage job characteristics on player wages and the implications of such nonwage attributes for player movement.

Abstract:
Driven by an exponential growth in mobile broadband-enabled devices and a continue dincrease in individual data consumption, mobile data traffic has grown 4000-fold over the past 10 years and almost 400-million-fold over the past 15 years. Homogeneouscellular networks have been facing limitations to handle soaring mobile data traffic and to meet the growing end-user demand for more bandwidth and betterquality of experience. These limitations are mainly related to the available spectrumand the capacity of the network. Telecommunication industry has to address these challenges and meet exploding demand. At the same time, it has to guarantee a healthy economic model to reduce the carbon footprint which is caused by mobile communications.Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets), composed of macro base stations and low powerbase stations of different types, are seen as the key solution to improve spectral efficiency per unit area and to eliminate coverage holes. In such networks, intelligent user association and interference management schemes are needed to achieve gains in performance. Due to the large imbalance in transmission power between macroand small cells, user association based on strongest signal received is not adapted inHetNets as only few users would attach to low power nodes. A technique based onCell Individual Offset (CIO) is therefore required to perform load balancing and to favor some Small Cell (SC) attraction against Macro Cell (MC). This offset is addedto users’ Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) measurements and hence inducing handover towards different eNodeBs. As Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular networks use the same frequency sub-bands, mobile users may experience strong inter-cellxv interference, especially at cell edge. Therefore, there is a need to coordinate resource allocation among the cells and minimize inter-cell interference. To mitigate stronginter-cell interference, the resource, in time, frequency and power domain, should be allocated efficiently. A pattern for each dimension is computed to permit especially for cell edge users to benefit of higher throughput and quality of experience. The optimization of all these parameters can also offer gain in energy use. In this thesis,we propose a concrete versatile dynamic solution performing an optimization of user association and resource allocation in LTE cellular networks maximizing a certainnet work utility function that can be adequately chosen. Our solution, based on gametheory, permits to compute Cell Individual Offset and a pattern of power transmission over frequency and time domain for each cell. We present numerical simulations toillustrate the important performance gain brought by this optimization. We obtain significant benefits in the average throughput and also cell edge user through put of40% and 55% gains respectively. Furthermore, we also obtain a meaningful improvement in energy efficiency. This work addresses industrial research challenges and assuch, a prototype acting on emulated HetNets traffic has been implemented

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to have a better understanding of the main aspects that affect the psychological contract established by individuals facing a changing process on their organizational work relationship. This study focused on the competence management implementation as a competitive advantage. In terms of resource management strategy, the concept of competence is an important instrument to measure different individual responsibilities and contributions to the organization. On the other hand, the organization performance will depend on how individuals interact with the management system in order to maintain a positive psychological contract. Therefore, a qualitative case study with exploratory characteristics was developed based on several interviews done with employees from a company that belongs to the petrochemical sector, called Technip S.A. This firm is implementing a competence management methodology. These interviews were based on previous questionnaires and their purpose was to identify the social reality of the organization based o its individuals` expectation, before and after changing events. The main results of this study confirm a reciprocity relationship between individuals and organization, that a change in the work relationship can either reinforce the psychological contract or violate it, and the individuals` comprehension will directly depend on their pre-existent psychological contract. Finally, this study suggests that the success of a competence management system implementation depends on understanding the psychological contract of those involved on the changing events.

Abstract:
To meet global competition many companies have reorganized work process systems, eliminated management levels, formed employee work groups and implemented variable compensation systems. This study investigated the effect of group incentives on individual sales performance in two specialty shops located in a large metropolitan hotel. Two questions were addressed: What effect would adding a group bonus plan have on individual employee's sales performance who had previously received hourly wages in one shop; and, what effect would changing an individual incentive plan to a group plan have on the individual employee's sales performance in the other shop. In one shop 5 of 7 employees' productivity increased: in the other, 1 of 3 subjects' productivity increased. Contingencies in both shops are analyzed and suggestions offered for future research.

Abstract:
This research investigates the mutual influence between self-management as organizational structure and intuition in decision-making. Self-management as organizational structure has recently developed as a response to current challenges in society and business, thus constitutes an emerging research field. This study is contributing empirically to this under-research field while at the same time building on the well-researched field of decision-making. In particular, this study is building on the positive view of intuition in decision-making that comes along with dual-process theories. The empirical contribution of this study is collected through semi-structured interviews with a multiple-case study research design. This study’s main finding is the confirmation of a mutual influence, even more, a positive mutual influence, between self-management as organizational structure and intuition in decision-making. Furthermore, first findings on how they are influencing each other are brought forward as well as insights into the diversity of decision-making processes when applying self-management as organizational structure.

Abstract:
This thesis is an analysis and evaluation of a case study in deinstitutionalisation of people with intellectual disabilities. The process has been viewed as an example of organisational change and the focus is on the relationship between formal and informal caregivers and the notion of care. Three key groups were included in the study, families of residents, the residents and staff. A qualitative approach was taken. The theoretical perspective that was developed attempted to account for links between social movements, organisations and individual experience in the arena of intellectual disability. This was based on the approach of New Institutionalism in organisational theory. The focus was primarily on the process--of change, and in caregiving. Three models of intellectual disability, which have informed policy and the recent changes to a preference for community care, have been identified and the links between these and the elements of organisations developed for providing care explored. The experience of families and residents within the hospital setting and then the community care setting has been examined in relation to the nature of the organisation. Outcomes for the three groups have been examined in terms of their needs and the extent to which these needs were met by the arrangements over a given time. It is concluded that community care has the potential to better meet the needs of those involved, than has hospital based care. A number of factors in the process of change and in the delivery of care have been identified as impacting on outcomes for those involved. Consideration is given to the practical implications of these findings.

Abstract:
This study is an investigation into water management policies in South Africa, their effect on water users and the perceptions users have of these policies. The investigation begins with an exposition of concepts such as water demand management (WDM), as well as integrated water resource management (IWRM). A sub-discourse of the main theme is the societal tendency to neglect its common property. Garret Hardin's groundbreaking observations on the "tragedy of the commons" (1968) are explored in an effort to locate issues of relevance in effective water management strategies. In contemplating the commons, it is evident that aspects of morality and ethics are involved. The morality of a society be it in a global or national context, seems to manifest itself in legislation and policies, and in the way these are implemented. The relevance of good governance, hydropolitics and sustainable development is also discussed to provide the necessary theoretical background to an understanding of the relationship between consumers and the water commons. Access to safe drinking water is protected in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act, 108 of 1996. Flowing from the government's obligation to take reasonable legislative and other measures to achieve the progressive realisation of fundamental human rights stipulated in section 27(2) of the Constitution, the challenge since 1994 has been to provide access to water for all inhabitants and to manage the available water resources effectively. Furthermore, the objective of subsequent water legislation such as the National Water Act, 36 of 1998 and regulatory plans, like the National Water Resource Strategy has been to incorporate international trends in water governance. The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs (DWEA) divided South Africa into 19 regions, called water management areas (WMA). In this study, attention is focused on what constitutes a catchment and how a catchment management agency (CMA) governs its water resources. A description is provided of the functions of water user associations (WUAs) and how ththe Lower Orange Catchment Management Area is, for example, the blueprint from which stakeholders develop their goals. In this study, the water situation in the Lower Orange Water Management Area is under scrutiny. The focus is on the three main institutional components of water management (the Lower Orange catchment management, the Upington Islands Water User Association [UIWUA] and the //Khara Hais Local Municipality). The progress of the establishment of the Lower Orange Catchment Management Agency is outlined over a period of five years. Meanwhile, the Upington Islands Water User Association was developed and this has grown in stature. The work being done by these institutions is investigated by looking at grassroots effects, especially in respect of irrigation activities. The unique water management circumstances of the //Khara Hais Local Municipality are then investigated along with the plans outlined in their Integrated Development Plan {lOP) and their Water Services Development Plane Internal Strategic Perspective (ISP) of(WSDP). Because local irrigation operations consume most of the available surface water in the Lower Orange Water Management Area, irrigation farmers and their activities warrant closer attention. A historical overview is given of the development of irrigation in the region followed by an assessment of the role of two of the most prominent historical figures in Upington, Reverend Adriaan Schroder and Abraham "Holbors" September. Ultimately, however, the focus falls on the current state of irrigation in the area. It is possible to distinguish between the approach of large commercial farming operations and that of smaller irrigation farming units to irrigation. Specific attention is given to the perceptions of irrigation farmers as far as the policies and legislation pertaining to water issues is concerned. This study will hopefully provide the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs(DWEA), //Khara Hais Local Municipality and organised agriculture with some recommendations on efficient integrated water management strategies. It might well be of value to other municipalities who are experiencing similar problems. The aim has been to identify typical problems and potential disputes between water management institutions and relevant role-players.

Abstract:
This study addresses the central problem of how the behaviour of individuals may be co-ordinated to manage collective natural resources, and in particular, to what degree this can be achieved through voluntary, community based means under a free market policy regime. This question was explored by researching how local groups known as Landcare, or Care groups, are managing waterways in Waikato, New Zealand, and specifically by examining their effectiveness in controlling non-point source contaminants to water originating from agricultural land.An action research approach was used to investigate research questions regarding what motivates actors to support activity to enhance water quality, the effectiveness of such activity in addressing non-point source discharges to water, and the equity issues which are associated with environmental management through Landcare. This study suggests that neo-liberal philosophies of governance, while favouring voluntary resource management, disregard the conditions which, in practice, underpin effective and equitable examples of this type of activity. A call is therefore made for a more active role for government, in directly supporting local action, in compensating for the impacts of free-market policies on natural resource use, and in facilitating the representation of the diversity of views in environmental management. Action research, participatory planning, and other learning based and communicative processes could be usefully employed to guide and inform such interventions

"Knowledge transfer in IT-Service organizations : A qualitative case study researching a boundary object theory perspective on knowledge transfer through information systems, in an ITIL context." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Informatik, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-160544.

Abstract:
Knowledge management is seen as a hot topic in order for organizations to become effective and utilize the knowledge residing within the organization. The most important factor in knowledge management is believed to be the knowledge transfer, which is the process of transferring knowledge between two parties. A context in which knowledge and knowledge transfer are especially important is within the best practice framework ‘ITIL’ and IT-service organizations. Therefore, the purpose with this study is to analyze how knowledge is transferred through information systems in an ITIL organization, and how the transfer process can be further understood by incorporating individual perspectives on knowledge. Besides that, our purpose is to identify factors influencing the knowledge transfer from both the organizations and the ITIL framework. The reason for this is that knowledge transfer through information systems in an ITIL context is rather underexplored, previous research regarding this is mainly focusing on putting knowledge in repositories and make it available, which is believed to create certain implications regarding the individual perspective in the creation and transfer of knowledge through information systems. These implications are something that has not been explored, which is a knowledge gap we intend to fill with this thesis. That is why we have constructed three research questions regarding how the organizations understand what valuable knowledge is, what factors that is influencing their knowledge transfer, and how these previously individual aspects can be further understood by applying the boundary object theory on knowledge transfer through information systems. From a multi case study with semi structured interviews we could collect a valuable collection of empirical data, that was collected from six respondents representing three organizations. By applying the interpretive and social constructivist research philosophy with an abductive methodological approach, previous research and the boundary object theory in combination with the theory of knowledge creation we could analyze our empirical data. Our study shows that the perspective on valuable knowledge is something with direct relation to ITIL, and highly connected to what its contribution is to the core business that the IT-service organization is helping. Valuable knowledge is also seen as stored knowledge. We can from our study also see that there are four predominant forces influencing the knowledge transfer process. We identified that the overall perspective on what knowledge is in the organization, how and what the organization values as knowledge, the ITIL framework and their knowledge management strategy directly influenced knowledge transfer. Our main finding in this study is that when organizations are transferring knowledge through information systems the individual perspective on both knowledge, knowledge creation and the knowledge transfer is one of the most important to keep in mind. The knowledge in the information systems is a way to communicate among individuals, and a way to translate one individual’s knowledge to another, hence is the individual creating the knowledge an important factor to acknowledge. We can see that aspects such as experiences, skills, insights, purposes, perspectives and contextual understandings highly influence the knowledge being created, hence the possibility to create rich knowledge at the receiver of knowledge. These aspects also influence whether the stored knowledge has any tacit elements, which seems to facilitate learning more for the receiving individual.

Abstract:
While sustainability-dedicated managers and related titles represent a profession that has hardly existed for more than a decade, it is not surprising that the field of research concentrating on these professionals is in itself relatively new. With an increasing demand for corporations to take their social and environmental responsibility, and a corporate sustainability characterized by tension and paradox, we found it of importance to explore the role and entanglements of these professionals. By analysing 17 in-depth interviews with sustainability-dedicated professionals from the private sector in Sweden, our interpretation is that sustainability managers hold the function of selling sustainability, with talk as their main weapon. Expressly, in the intersection between business-case logics and sustainability logics, sustainability managers have to, above all, make a convincing case for sustainability, inwards and outwards. Therefore, they draw dynamically on different narratives which we conceptualise in three roles: the chameleon, the pragmatic, and the nagging manager. Through these roles, we intend to capture the fluidity with which the managers relate and engage with sustainability, and hence we do not mean to ossify a role’s dynamics within a single, static or stereotypical category. We discuss these findings and concepts to the background of previous studies and existing literature.

The 21st century is an age of knowledge and information explosion. How to efficiently and systematically extract the key knowledge and information required for professional work has become a major challenge for professional workers. Therefore, "knowledge management" has become the most important issue for enterprises. Even non-profit organizations cannot ignore it. Because knowledge can be inherited, used and stored effectively are the key to maintaining the core competitiveness of the organization. This study hopes to use social welfare non-profit organizations as research objects. The six processes of knowledge management used by general enterprises include Identification of knowledge, acquisition of knowledge, Development of knowledge, Distribution of knowledge, use of knowledge, and Preservation of knowledge to explore its applicability. This study uses case study research to collect data and adopt semi-structured interviews to analyze the current organization's knowledge management methods in Individual case management service, and whether it is possible to carry out operational process modification (pragmatic forms of BPR) in order to solve the problem of experience inheritance and enhance the competitiveness of the organization. After collecting the internal data and written or archived information of the case, the study found that the knowledge area involved in the Individual case service was rather complicated. Afterwards, a two-stage interview was conducted. From the first paragraph of the interview, it was learned that the current research case organization are not lacking in the acquisition and use of knowledge. but the rest of the processes are still wanting. Therefore, according to the points of knowledge management, we propose amendments and discuss its applicability for the identification, development, distribution, preservation of knowledge. In the second paragraph of the interview, the organization director agreed that the objective of success should be effectively achieved. The content includes the person responsible for knowledge management related operations, the implementation of knowledge creation in the SECI model, and the planning of the information system as the storage and update of knowledge management. However, during the interview, it was found that regardless of the organization director or organization member, due to the different fields of expertise, there is a lack of knowledge about knowledge management. Therefore, the promotion of knowledge management will not be achieved in a short period of time, It is necessary to explain and educate organization member about the management of know-how, and to strengthen employee awareness so that they can gradually implement it. This study also provides recommendations for the implementation of knowledge management for social welfare nonprofit organizations based on the findings, including the concretization of knowledge as soon as possible, the use of existing equipment to plan an information system that includes a complete knowledge map, and enhances employees’ understanding of knowledge management, and expects that Research can provide reference to the implementation of knowledge management by non-profit organizations. Alves, Jose C. "A multilevel analysis of the association among individual capabilities, team leadership behaviors, and performance in China." 2008. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI3315480.

Abstract:
One of the fundamental research questions about leadership in teams revolves around whether to organize activities on the basis of capabilities (Balkundi and Harrison, 2006) or behaviors (Pearce and Sims, 2002). Despite a growing body of theoretical work by scholars from each of these traditions, there is still limited empirical research about how behaviors and capacities of leadership interact to explain performance in teams. Research on teams and leadership is a relatively well defined field of study in the West, but still incipient in non-Western countries, particularly in China (e.g. Tjosvold, Law, and Sun, 2006; Tsui, Wang, Xin, Zhang, and Fu, 2004; Tsui, Zhang, Wang, Xin, Wu, 2006). Notwithstanding, since teams are recognizably important work units in Chinese organizations (Chuah and Law, 2006; Law and Chuah, 2004), whether these are Western invested firms (Chen and Barshes, 2000) or state-owned enterprises (Tjosvold, Law, and Sun, 2003), it is important to learn more about leadership and teams in China. This study examines multilevel relationships among individual social capital, human capital, team leadership behaviors, and performance. Data from 350 individuals and 69 teams were gathered in two organizations in China, and analyzed with hierarchical linear modeling. The findings provide strong evidence that individual social capital, human capital, and team leadership behaviors do matter for individual performance. Additionally, the results suggest the existence of team paradoxes: individual social capital is related to individual performance, but this effect is reversed as team average social capital increases; human capital and team tenure have opposite effects on individual performance; and, team diversity has contrary effects on social capital and human capital. This study is one of the first to demonstrate the integration of two theoretical traditions on team leadership using multiple levels of analysis. The team paradoxes suggest that there is no 'ideal formula' to manage team leadership, thus managers must learn how to cope with it in systemic and adaptive ways. Furthermore, the results of this study also reveal that a deeper understanding of team leadership requires, for example, disaggregation of social capital, examination of team processes, and reconceptualization of team leadership behaviors.

Deeply concomitant with the lives of farmers, farmers’ associations play an important role in the local communities of Taiwan. Their role in the evolution of agriculture is one of the most distinctive and they are recognized as the most widely distributed non-government organization (NGO) community in Taiwan. In the past, farmers’ associations have cooperated with local government departments, assisting in the successful development of small-scale farmers and helping create prosperous “miracles” within the Taiwanese economy. However, since the advent of the globalization era, Taiwan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the rising trend of free trade agreements, they have faced structural transformation. Farmers’ associations no longer have the advantage of exclusiveness, and their ability to protect local agricultural businesses has gradually dissolved. They are thus forced into competition in both the domestic and international markets. Coupled with urbanization and industrialization, the aging of the agricultural population, and the outflow migration of young farmers, farmers’ associations are no longer successfully reaching service targets. Moreover, demands from both farmers and the public for higher-quality services continue to increase, further intensifying the challenges that farmers’ associations face in their tasks. Pressure from competition calls for change, innovative thinking, sophisticated processes, modern technologies, and new achievements. Hundred-year old farmers’ associations face an urgent need to adapt to modernization in terms of both mentality and market practices. This study adopted in-depth interviews through personal visits with several directors-general of farmers’ associations that have managed their successful transformation to modernization to explore their motivations, brand building methodologies, beliefs, attitudes, and vision. The results found that the managers of farmers’ associations had initially realized the necessity for operational transformation and improving business skills. Taking advantage of local conditions, they gradually created business models based on their local characteristics, developed new products, improved marketing, and promoted new and developing industries such as leisure tourism. However, the transformation of the associations faced various obstacles in the organizational culture. The directors-general played a significant role in unifying the understanding of colleagues and motivating the team towards the change by ensuring increased awareness of the potential value of farmers’ associations in the new era and the benefits of the change, with the goal of achieving team cohesiveness and establishing a new business model and vision.

In this study, we collect literature and case study data and outline the operating environment TFT-LCD industry in Taiwan for the establishment of industrial domain knowledge. From the production management point of view, we analyze how production management staffs in charge of the daily production management decisions do effective decision-making in arranging allocation of resources, facing the constraints of data complexity and limited available time. Grounded on the case analysis, we propose an association rules data mining aided production management decision-making system prototype for data acquisition, processing, analyzing, model updating, and other processes through cross-industry standard data mining processes (CRISP-DM). We use association rules algorithms to deal with short-term production management and WIP situation analysis, and explain how to use R (data mining software) to construct data analysis software system architecture prototype, which utilizes data analysis to assist production management managers for decision-making and resource allocation problems discovery and promotion corrective action. Finally, from the point of view of information economy, we apply the VPRC strategy model to analyze how data mining systems can create values and improve efficiency for the production management decision. We use experiments to show how data mining algorithms combined with domain knowledge can bring business value to the enterprise.

Abstract In recent years, organizational structures of the cooperative have been applied generally by many governments in Europe and the USA to the promotion of community development. In view of its functions in society, economy, education, and culture, the cooperative can actively promote community development and foster community autonomy. Therefore, this research investigates the practical operation results from the participation of Taiwan’s cooperative in community development and predicaments which confront the cooperative, further reviewing the results from the participation of the cooperative in the development of community economic industry. This research aims to review rural community economic development under the traditional context of promoting rural community economic development mainly through farmers association and cooperative. Farmers association and the cooperative have respectively brought into their important functions into play to promote rural community economic development. However, issues about weak market competitiveness or feckless management and strategy of farmers association have resulted in plights facing most businesses operated by each of its division, thus making the cooperative farm which has the same supply and marketing business to that of the farmers association stand out under the circumstances that the immense social networking and organizational strengths the farmers association has enjoyed, as the farm even receives support from community farmers and gets more feedbacks. The researcher of this study conducted interviews with staff of farmers association, members, directors and supervisors of cooperative farm, and top 10 outstanding farmers to probe into how farmers association and cooperative farm bring their strengths and opportunity into play to benefit community economic development.
