Abstract:
Following the idea that the behavior of individuals is framed by their contextual setting, this chapter tackles the persistent research gap regarding the impact of regionally varying economic performance on individual turnout. By looking at German districts and applying a multilevel design, we analyze the interplay of an individual’s characteristics and the regional economic performance regarding the decision to cast a vote. Results do not show a direct effect of regional economic performance in the data for 2009 and 2013, but high regional unemployment rates enforce the negative effect of individual unemployment on turnout in the German federal election in 2009, in the middle of the European economic crisis. Additionally, we find evidence that during this crisis election in 2009, East Germans seem to be more susceptible to economic threat scenarios than West Germans, as the former tend to withdraw from voting when regional unemployment rates are high.

Abstract:
This book examines the varied and complex factors that affect an individual’s decision to confide in another person. It probes the experiences of a set of graduate students over the course of their first year in their programs and compares them with those of nationally representative populations. The findings show that decisions about whom to turn to when seeking confidants are influenced by the complicated nature of social relationships, as well as the contexts where those relationships take place. The book describes an alternative view of social support, one in which actors are mostly pragmatic in their decisions about expressing vulnerability, and one in which contexts—the institutional spaces where people spend their daily lives—are at least as important as network structure in shaping their decisions.

Abstract:
Traditional finance explains individual investor’s behavior and financial decision making based on economic incentives and rationality. Modern finance, however, takes a holistic view and searches for not only economic but also biological, psychological, and social factors that shape decision making. In this new approach, genetics, life experiences, psychological traits, social norms, and peer influences, as well as beliefs, values, and culture help determine an investor’s stock market participation, equity holdings, frequency of trading, extent of diversification, and investment preferences. The collective preferences and actions of individual investors also have an impact on asset pricing and corporate decisions.

Abstract:
In theory, deterrence is a behavioral response to an individual’s perceptions about the certainty and/or severity of criminal justice sanctions. The perceptual underpinnings of compliance with the law are therefore of long-standing interest in perceptual deterrence scholarship. This chapter provides an overview of the broad scope of this scholarship. After reviewing the basic perceptual elements of crime decision-making models, attention turns to a consideration of research on the determinants of sanction perceptions. First, the overall accuracy of sanction perceptions with respect to existing statutes and penalties is discussed. Second, the degree to which an individual’s sanction perceptions are updated in response to his or her experiences as a successful or unsuccessful offender is examined. Third, the manifold research traditions speaking to situational influences on sanction perceptions are surveyed. Emerging dual-process models inspired by research on judgment and decision making are finally considered.

Abstract:
Even seemingly mundane decisions involve a fair amount of individual decision-making. Chapter 4 takes a closer look at the consumer decision-making process, considering (1) the process itself; (2) the individuals and groups that make up the decision-making unit; and (3) other common factors that affect decision-making. How people make healthcare decisions, and how quickly they make them, varies greatly depending on a large range of factors, with cultural, economic, psychological, and social influences affecting the outcome at each step. This chapter reviews each of these areas in greater depth and also explores how and why the decision-making process often breaks down in healthcare markets today.
