Abstract:
With the push towards ‘Indigenisation’ in Australian tertiary institutes, the discipline of English at the University of Newcastle undertook a pilot project to investigate what this could look like and what it meant for staff and students. This paper reflects our efforts to engage with notions of ‘Indigenisation’, based on national and international exemplars and presents one of our efforts to indigenise our discipline of English. We argue that our shifting and changing understanding of integrating Aboriginal ways of knowing into mainstream English courses is both difficult and essential.

AbstractThis paper aims to analyze the indigenous mobilization in Jujuy within the framework of the indigenous policies of the provincial state at the beginning of the year 2017. On the one hand we analyzed the Law of "Administrative servitudes of busway and special regime of constitution and administrative servitudes for the development of projects of generation of electrical energy from renewable sources on community-owned properties" as Indigenist policy of the Jujuy state. And on the other we retake the criticism of the indigenous leader and anthropologist Omawakeño Gustavo Gabriel Ontiveros, member of the Assembly of Communities Free from Jujuy. In this way, we recovered the theoretical categories of Latin American indigenism (Colombes, 1975; Bonfil Battle, 1981; Favre, 1998 and Díaz Polanco, 2009) and internal colonialism (Rivera Cusicanqui, 2010). We use as main source an exhibition carried out by Ontiveros in the framework of the "Aboriginal Week 2017: strengthening in Córdoba the indigenous resistance, black and popular", organized by the Institute of Aborigine Cultures (ICA). Where it exposes the conflict between the communities and the provincial government, it recounts the indigenous mobilization carried out against the law 5915 and refers to the main claims of the indigenous peoples in Jujuy.Key words: indigenous struggle, indigenism, colonialism, Jujuy

Abstract:
Oneof the intriguing paradoxes of Côte d'Ivoire is that while the political class has become famous for its ‘open-door’ capitalism, the Government headed by Félix Houphouët-Boigny consistently heightened its rhetoric of ‘Ivoirianisation’ through which it purported to indigenise the economy. The fact is that capitalism controlled by foreigners has generally gained the upper hand with state connivance or approval. Where local capitalism exists, it is often spearheaded by the state as participant and competitor, rather than as a facilitator of indigenous enterprise. Shipping offers a good example of this dual approach, where the state became the vanguard of a vigorous national and regional drive for maritime independence, but at the same time pursued its self-declared ‘open-door’ strategy which ensured continued domination of the sector by foreigners.

Palavras-chave: Tenetehara Guajajara; Saúde Indigenista; Controle Social.ABSTRACTThis article analyzes the indigenous health system and the forms of social control within the scope of health services offered by the State to the Tenetehara Guajajara indigenous people. It is a qualitative study that used as methodological procedures bibliographical and documentary research, and the collection of data in indigenous villages and instances of indigenist health in Maranhão. The research results showed that the multidisciplinary indigenous health team does not receive specific training for the medical care offered to the Tenetehara Guajajara. The articulation between the biomedical knowledge and the traditional knowledge of indigenous people does not occur, as the Indian health politics recommends. Regarding the social control of the indigenist health actions developed by the State, the Tenetehara Guajajara participates in the local and district councils, and organize extra-official strategies. It was concluded that, although advances are registered in the scope of indigenist health actions developed in Maranhão, some of them disregard the ethnic characteristics of the Tenetehara Guajajara and guidelines established by the National Politics of Attention to the Health of the Indigenous People. Palabras clave: Rojas González, antropología, indigenismo, Tona, Hículi Hualula ABSTRACT In this paper, we analyze two tales from the important but little studied book El diosero (1952), by Francisco Rojas González, as two antithetical positions on the indigenous. "La tona" and "Hícula Hualula" are part of a context where the debate about Mexicanness was in vogue in the literary institution as well as in the anthropological one. Anthropologist by profession, Rojas González appears as a figure who, through one of his narrations, would problematize the discipline to which he belongs. The author's position on indigenous knowledge would set a precedent for later Mexican indigenist literature and for the Latin American thought that would put in doubt the superiority of West's knowledgeKeywords: Rojas González, anthropology, indigenismo, Tona, Hícula Hualula

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research studies the influences and stages faced by the Cusco indigenist school in the first half of the 20th century, based on a review that examines the viceregal period, nineteenth-century and the first years of the twentieth century that impacted the development of music in Cusco. This approach prioritizes the historical events due to the fact that the Cusco musical indigenism was projected on the popular expressions consolidated in an extensive social and cultural process. The investigation is structured in 3 chapters. The first one corresponds to the revision of the indigenist roots in the Viceroyalty of Peru. The second studies the most immediate roots of the preindigenismo in the republican period of the 19th century. The third discusses the music development since the dissemination of the indigenous movement in the early twentieth century.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the electricity sector in Brazil, taking as its object indigenism as a set of ideals concerning the place of indigenous peoples in the nation, as well as indigenous policies, that is, real acts concerning indigenous peoples. With that objective, the thesis traces the genealogy of indigenism in the power sector, examines the institutional and legal frameworks of economic, social, and environmental constraints, and investigates the motivations of different actors and the role of inter-ethnic brokers. The thesis analyses the production of documents which put into perspective the conceptions of the sector and those of the indigenists. The research was conducted from inside a state apparatus supporting energy planning. In Brazil, history leads us from the pioneering studies conducted by university anthropologists, who met the demand of the electricity sector while keeping a pro-indigenous commitment, to the contemporary regulations of the anthropologists’ activities in this sector, when they are directly hired by the companies, usually as freelancers. The thesis sheds light on the network of interelations between researchers, the indigenous apparatus, and the industry. The analysis of the Waimiri-Atroari program (PWA) is an emblematic example of the kind of problem approached in this thesis. This case study puts into question how different indigenism currents (Rondon-inspired military, missionary, and academic) understand indigenous peoples and take a stance vis-à-vis hydropower plants. The thesis shows how, under the pressure of national and international actors, a large company in the electrical sector resorted to colonial knowledge in the sertanista tradition to implement policies of health, education, economic production, and protection of the territory. At the heart of these policies, which have been developing in the same territory since 1987, we can identify a process of consecration of the PWA, based on the religious metaphor of the "rebirth" of the Waimiri Atroari people, thank to the electrical sector. At the same time, this iniciative leads both anthropologists and missionaries to raise a series of questions about the tutelage of the company which depoliticizes this indigenous people and controls their territory and their destiny. Thus, starting from the hypothesis of the heterogeneity of indigenisms and indigenists policies of the electricity sector, the thesis comes to the conclusion that this economic sector has become another space of contestation for the indigenist field

Dame, Shannon. "Indigenismo in the Mexican Photographs of Tina Modotti: The Revolutionary and the Indigenista." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3102.

Full text
Abstract:
During Tina Modotti's time in Mexico in the 1920s, much of her photography and political activities focused on and fought for the rights of those who had been previously overlooked and marginalized, namely the indigenous people of Mexico. Many government officials, artists and intellectuals at the time believed that it was through the indigenous culture that Mexico could redeem itself and create its own national identity. Indigenismo, the philosophy that supported this claim, was of interest to Modotti and was a recurring theme throughout her photography. Following the Mexican Revolution of 1910, indigenismo appeared to be the solution to establishing this new identity that was authentically Mexican and distinct from the perceived corruption of Europe and North America. However, the principles of this theory were paradoxical in that proponents supported incorporating indigenous elements into Mexican society, but they also supposed that the only way to recreate the country was by dismissing and destroying these native cultures. Modotti was not as interested in advocating a rebuilding of Mexico as she was in promoting social equality among all races and groups of people in the country, similar to what international Marxism endorsed. Indigenismo to Modotti was more of a way to give voice to the marginalized indigenous people who had been forgotten politically, educationally and artistically for centuries. Through three phases of her photographic career in Mexico—her early phase (which included the Idols Behind Altars project), Mexican Folkways, and her work done in Tehuantepec-we can see how Modotti progressed as an indigenista artist. Although her audience varied in each of these three phases, Modotti's commitment to, and portrayal of, Mexico's indigenous culture was a central unifying theme in her work. This study argues that the photographs of Tina Modotti illustrate her concept of indigenismo by celebrating what she perceived as strong, egalitarian indigenous communities that appealed to her Marxist political philosophy. Modotti sought to counter previous distorted or exaggerated misconceptions of indigenous culture, and she tried to compensate for this lack of authenticity within the Mexican national identity and Mexican art through her photography.

This work intends to make a sociological analysis of the action of the Indigenous Protection Service (Serviço de Proteção aos Índios SPI), in the State of Amazonas, during the 1910-1932 period. Based on such concepts as devices, field and tutelary power we have tried not only to make a historical timetable of the presence of SPI in the State of Amazonas, but also to shed some light on the practices carried out by the indigenist body in the mission of conducting the Indian population in the region under its jurisdiction, of a primitive condition to a positive state , through a localled civilizatory process . The major objective is to bring to date critical reflections on these positivistic assumptions which have deeply marked the actions by the indigenist bodies (SPI, FUNAI). It is our intention in this dissertation, to show all the nuances of the rondonistic practices in the State of Amazonas during the first decades of the XX century.

The south region of the Rio Grande do Norte has been historically recognized as a place of old indian villages. Inhabitants of the edges of the Catu River, border between the cities of Canguaretama and Goianinha, the Eleot?rios in the threshold of 21st century had passed to be seen and self recognized as "remaining indians" of the RN. Their ethnic mobilizations, when becoming public had placed to the intellectual and political fields an old question to be reflected on: the asseverations concerning the "indian disappearing" in the State. This item brings with it other implications. Accessed by a para-oficial indigenism, the Eleot?rios had started to establish political relations with the Potiguara indians of the Ba?a da Trai??o/PB and the Indian Movement, feeling stimulated to produce and to reproduce forms of social differentiation. In this context, this research is worried about elucidating the process of construction of the ethnicity among the Eleot?rios, percepted from the social relations and politics kept with the amplest society, into a particular historical situation involving sugar cane fields owners, proprietaries, militants, researchers, ambiental agencies. The effects of these political and social relations had been extended, making Eleot?rios appear to the society as susceptible social actors to the specific policies for the aboriginal populations

Abstract:
The thesis: "Camilo Egas, the precursor of indigenism and instigator of the avant-garde in Ecuador (1889-1962)", exposes a comprehensive study of the painter's author career in two dimensions of analysis: 1) the historical, geopolitical and sociological context, and 2) the artistic and aesthetic context, referring to the work and stages of the Ecuadorian modern artist, considered as a key actor in the development of the country's twentiethcentury modern trends. Exposed in two great creative periods: the period of Indigenismo in a varied imprint, and the period of the avant-garde, the isms and variants that it went through, from social realism to its final abstract phase

This thesis discusses the relations between the Indigenous and Brazilian society in the Province of Amazonas, between 1850 and 1889. In this study, two reading axes are in conflict and complement each other: on the one hand, the indigenous policy conceived, elaborated and executed by the State and its agents, and on the other, the indigenous policy developed and executed by different people and indigenous groups. However, far from being two parallel reading axes, these two aspects made it possible to see indigenous and indigenousness history in the Province of Amazonas, not as a one-way path, in which the State and non-indigenous society were the protagonists, but as a field of tension, alliance and dispute in which the state and society, "Indians" and "whites", write an important and singular page of Indigenous and indigenousness history in this part of the Brazilian Imperial. In this field of dispute, the projects of the Brazilian State thought of in the offices had their execution mediated by the local reality and, therefore, by the participation or the rejection of the Indigenous at different levels. Likewise, the political actions of each ethnic group or indigenous group, as well as the indigenous reactions in response to the official policy or to the localized actions of private individuals (regattas, travelers, rubber tappers, etc.), were not carried out without consent, support, convenience, disagreement and even violent retaliation of the State, its agents and the national society. In contrast to what part of historiography proposes, the Indigenous were not only helpless victims of the politics and economic interests of the State and of Brazilian society sectors, but they were active agents in the construction of their history and of important part of the history of Brazilian society itself in the Amazon in the 19th century. Based on these premises, the different moments, instruments and practices of both the Indigenous and the State and their agents in the construction of this indigenous and indigenousness history in this part of the Amazon and imperial Brazil are analyzed in this thesis.

Abstract:

Méthode: Après un état des lieux de la situation des indigents dans le système de santé au Bénin, trois études ont été réalisées pour approfondir la question des indigents;

Abstract:
In 1925, La Paz city residents observed Bolivia’s first centennial of political independence, with official state celebrations that in hindsight appear remarkably devoid of Bolivian nationalist exhibitions of indigenismo. Twenty-three years later, urban La Paz hosted another lavish commemoration, this time to honor the city’s 400th anniversary. But, in a clear departure from the 1925 centennial, the 1948 event included a “folklore” festival that was wholly devoted to Andean indigenous music-dance traditions, the Concurso Folklórico Indígena del Departamento. As the Concurso’s inclusion in the 1948 celebration suggests, mainstream La Paz criollo-mestizo views about the cultural value and meanings of Andean indigenous expressive practices had undergone a significant transformation in the twenty-three years following the 1925 centennial. This chapter elucidates this major shift, by exploring key developments in the paceño indigenista musical scene that transpired in the period from the 1920s to 1940s. Throughout Latin America, elite and middle-class interest in regionally distinctive music-dance expressions reached new heights in the early decades of the 20th century, as part of a quest among a varied cast of politicians, writers, and artists for local traditions that unmistakably demonstrated the nation’s cultural uniqueness. Indigenismo represented a manifestation of this phenomenon. The Bolivian variant of this nativist movement took inspiration from indigenista currents radiating from other Latin American countries, including Mexico and Argentina, but above all else from Peru.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this practice-led doctoral thesis I adopt a Kaupapa Māori paradigm, where rangahau (gathering, grouping and forming, to create new knowledge and understanding), is grounded in a cultural perspective and Māori holistic worldview that is respectful of tikanga Māori (customs) and āhuatanga Māori (cultural practices). The case study that forms the focus of the presentation asks, “How might an artistic reconsideration of gender role differentiation shape new forms of Māori performative expression”. In addressing this, the researcher is guided and upheld by five mātāpono (principles): He kanohi kitea (a face seen, is appreciated) Titiro, whakarongo, kōrero (looking, listening and speaking) Manaakitangata (sharing and hosting people, being generous) Kia tūpato (being cautious) Kāua e takahi i te mana o te tangata (avoiding trampling on the mana of participants). In connecting these principles and values that are innate within te ao Māori (Māori people and culture) the paper unpacks a distinctive approach taken to interviewing and photographing nine takatāpui tāne (Māori males whose sexuality and gender identification are non-heteronormative). These men’s narratives of experience form the cornerstone of the inquiry that has a research focus on tuakiritanga (identity) where performative expression and connectivity to Māori way of being, causes individuals to carry themselves in distinctive ways. The lived experience of being takatāpui within systems that are built to be exclusive and discriminatory is significant for such individuals as they struggle to reclaim a place of belonging within te ao Māori, re-Indigenise whakaaro (understanding), and tangatatanga (being the self). In discussing a specifically Māori approach to drawing the poetics of lived experience forward in images and text, the presentation considers cultural practices like kaitahi (sharing of food and space), kanohi ki te kanohi kōrero (face to face interviewing), and manaakitangata (hosting with respect and care). The paper then considers the implications of working with an artistic collaborator (photographer), who is not Māori and does not identify as takatāpui yet becomes part of an environment of trust and vulnerable expression. Finally, the paper discusses images surfacing from a series of photoshoots and interviews conducted between August 2021 and February 2023. Here my concern was with how a participant’s identitiy and perfomativity might be discussed when preparing for a photoshoot, and then reviewing images that had been taken. The process involved an initial interview about each person’s identitiy, then a reflection on images emanating from studio session. For the shoot, the participant initially dressed themseleves as the takatāpui tāne who ‘passed’ in the world and later as the takatāpui tāne who dwelt inside. For the researcher, the process of titiro, whakarongo, kōrero (observing, listening and recording what was spoken), resourced a subsequent creative writing exercise where works were composed from fragments of interviews. These poems along with the photographs and interviews, constituted portraits of how each person understood themself as a self-realising, proud, fluid and distinctive Māori individual.

Abstract:

Hunt, Will, Saif Khan, and Dahlia Peterson. China’s Progress in Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment. Center for Security and Emerging Technology, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51593/20190018.

Full text
Abstract:
To reduce its dependence on the United States and its allies for semiconductors, China is building domestic semiconductor manufacturing facilities by importing U.S., Japanese, and Dutch semiconductor manufacturing equipment. In the longer term, it also hopes to indigenize this equipment to replace imports. U.S. and allied policy responses to China’s efforts will significantly affect its prospects for success in this challenging task.

Wooltorton, Sandra, Anne Poelina, Vennessa Poelina, John Guenther, and Ian Perdrisat. Feed the Little Children Evaluative Research Report. Nulungu Research Institute, The University of Notre Dame Australia, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.32613/nr/2022.4.

Full text
Abstract:
Taken from executive summary. The purpose of the report is to investigate the social, cultural and health impacts on Broome children and families who are supported through Feed the Little Children Inc. (FTLC) bi-weekly food relief program, and to try to determine what the optimum level of support should be. Researchers have taken an Indigenist research approach, which means that Aboriginal ways, values and goals support research implementation. The research framework focused on the lived experience of the FTLC users and data was collected via conversations with FTLC users’ aunties, grandparents, and long-term Broome residents. The report concludes that Broome children would benefit from a community focus grounded in cultural security for their food provision.
