Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
It has been widely accepted that moral violations that involve impurity (such as spitting in public) induce the emotion of disgust, but there has been a debate about whether moral violations that do not involve impurity (such as swearing in public) also induce the same emotion. The answer to this question may have implication for understanding where morality comes from and how people make moral judgments. This study aimed to compared the neural mechanisms underlying two kinds of moral violation by using an affective priming task to test the effect of sentences depicting moral violation behaviors with and without physical impurity on subsequent detection of disgusted faces in a visual search task. After reading each sentence, participants completed the face search task. Behavioral and electrophysiological (event-related potential, or ERP) indices of affective priming (P2, N400, LPP) and attention allocation (N2pc) were analyzed. Results of behavioral data and ERP data showed that moral violations both with and without impurity promoted the detection of disgusted faces (RT, N2pc); moral violations without impurity impeded the detection of neutral faces (N400). No priming effect was found on P2 and LPP. The results suggest both types of moral violation influenced the processing of disgusted faces and neutral faces, but the neural activity with temporal characteristics was different.

Abstract:
Recent cognitive science research indicates that humans possess numerous biologically rooted religious and moral intuitions. The present article draws on this research to compare forms of religious morality in the Abrahamic traditions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) and the Indic traditions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism). Special attention is given to moral teachings on kindness, peace, and love, as well as related teachings on justice, violence, and hate. The article considers how moral intuitions shape Abrahamic/Indic moral teachings, which, in turn, impact: (1) Abrahamic/Indic doctrines concerning politics, law, and war; (2) Abrahamic/Indic doctrines concerning individual ethics, and moral behavior proper to monastics and laypersons; and (3) Abrahamic/Indic doctrines concerning theological matters, such as the nature of the universe, souls, and deities.

Abstract:
Moral domain theory posits that moral knowledge is organized in separate domains related to moral and socio-conventional rules, with the latter being reliant on a statement made by authority. Domains may be contingent on different neuropsychological processing that may vary with age. Behavioral indices were measured in three age groups, to detect differences in the neuropsychological processing allegedly involved in the evaluation of rule transgressions in different domains. Acceptance of the transgressions was also investigated. Twenty-four children, 32 early adolescents, and 31 adolescents judged acceptability of rule transgressions when an authority figure allowed the transgression. Across age, moral-rule transgressions were less accepted and took significantly longer to be evaluated. In evaluating moral rule scenarios, children had the longest reaction times. Older adolescents took the least amount of time evaluating socio-conventional rule scenarios. Results suggest differences in the neuropsychological processing underlying decision making for moral and socio-conventional domains and that rule comprehension and distinction amongst domains increase by age.

Abstract:
“Islamicity Indices” are based on the Islamic teachings of the holy Qur’an and the Hadiths. Islam’s foundational teachings are summarized; the rules that follow are deduced; and then the important institutions that these teachings and rules indicate are identified. These rules and institutions are in turn then used to construct indices for measuring the degree of Islamicity—the reflection and manifestation of these teachings in a community or a country. The purpose of “Islamicity Indices” is to provide a compass for fundamental economic, social and legal reforms—a compass that embodies quantifiable goals and targets that can be negotiated, results that can be monitored and assessed and policies that can be modified to achieve the set targets. Importantly, these indices can open up a debate among Muslims about the deeper meaning of their religion and going well beyond its more mechanical requirements andsuch a debate, based on quantified Islamic teachings, cannot be easily dismissed by those in power. When non-Muslim and Muslim countries are compared, the indices indicate that New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the countries of Northern Europe occupy the top ten positions in adopting Islamic rules for their foundation. These are countries that are generally regarded as the most successful socio-economic countries. Thus the problem is not with Islam but with Muslims as they do not uphold the rules, which translate into institutions, recommended in Islam. The results of these indices since 2000 show the failure of most Muslim countries and the urgent need for sustained reform.

Abstract:
Ethical sensitivity is a requirement for people care as well as for decision-making in everyday practice. The aim is to present an adaptation and transcultural validation -in Spanish- of the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire by Lützén et al. in Spain. In addition to that, we provide a practical implementation analysing the degree of moral sensitivity of nursing students. The data used for data collection were moral Sensitivity Questionnaire, socio-demographic data and a self-report questionnaire. The psychometric properties of the questionnaire were assessed, including validity and reliability. Fit indices of the overall model were computed. The fit indices of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) indicate a poor fit, although the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) revealed two dimensions that show a better fit of its indices. Women and those women with more experience in the clinical setting have a higher mean score, as well as those who study in centers where the strategic lines are the humanization of care. Female nursing students with more experience in the clinical setting and with more educational training present higher sensitivity indexes, as well as those who study in centers where the strategic lines are the humanization of care. The findings confirm that the Lützén et al. questionnaire is multidimensional. In the Spanish sample, it was necessary to group the three initial factors into two: sense of moral burden and moral strength—grouping the moral responsibility items into the above items to make the instrument more resilient.

Abstract:
In recent years, attention has been given to the construction and development of new educational centers, but their spatial distribution across the cities has received less attention. In this study, the Average Nearest Neighbor (ANN) and the optimized hot spot analysis methods have been used to determine the general spatial distribution of the schools. Also, in order to investigate the spatial distribution of the schools based on the substructure variables, which include the school building area, the results of the general and local Moran and Getis Ord analyses have been investigated. A differential Moran index was also used to study the spatial-temporal variations of the schools’ distribution patterns based on the net per capita variable, which is the amount of school building area per student. The results of the Average Nearest Neighbor (ANN) analysis indicated that the general spatial patterns of the primary schools, the first high schools, and the secondary high schools in the years 2011, 2016, 2018, and 2021 are clustered. Applying the optimized hot spot analysis method also identified the southern areas and the suburbs as cold polygons with less-density. Also, the results of the differential Moran analysis showed the positive trend of the net per capita changes for the primary schools and first high schools. However, the result is different for the secondary high schools.

Abstract:
This study examined the role of achievement goals on indices of moral functioning (i.e., moral judgment, intention and behavior), unsportsmanlike attitudes, and judgments about the legitimacy of intentionally injurious acts in college basketball players. Male (n = 56) and female (n = 143) athletes completed questionnaires assessing the aforementioned variables. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed significant differences according to gender on the variables of interest. Specifically, male athletes reported higher ego orientation, lower task orientation, lower levels of moral functioning, and greater approval of unsportsmanlike behaviors, and they were more likely than females to judge injurious acts as legitimate. For the female sample, canonical correlation analysis indicated the presence of a significant but weak relationship between goal orientations and the set of moral variables. Higher ego orientation was related to lower levels of the judgment and intention indices of moral functioning and greater acceptance of intentionally injurious acts. Although this relationship was significant, the strength of the association between the two sets of variables accounted for only 9% of the variance in the set of moral variables.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT We characterize the optimal policy to induce a manager to assess the merits of a potential investment project, decide whether to implement the project, and enhance the performance of the project if it is implemented. We find that the initial planning moral hazard problem often is more constraining than the subsequent production moral hazard problem. To mitigate the planning moral hazard problem, under-investment is optimally induced when the project is initially thought to be profitable, whereas over-investment is induced when the project is initially thought to be unprofitable.

Spatial autocorrelation methods are used to study spatial disproportions in the socio-economic development of territories. The most common research methods are the analysis of Moran local indices, Moran global index, Getis-Ord hot spots. In this study, we used spatial autocorrelation methods to estimate COVID-19 distribution patterns. As a result of the study, we identified the formed growth poles, the epicenters of the spread of infection (St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk and Nizhny Novgorod regions) and only emerging ones. The practical application of this methodological approach allowed us to predict further spatial directions of the spread of coronavirus infection (Vladimir, Kaluga, Smolensk, Tula, Tver, Yaroslavl, Ryazan and Leningrad regions).

AbstractWe expound an economic explanation of the nature, causes, and effects of moral conventions. We show, first, that systems of moral rules lead to Pareto-efficiency; second, that the efficiency they induce may be interpreted as the outcome of an exchange of courtesies; third, and finally, that moral exchange takes place whenever the costs of transaction are sufficiently low. We also explain various phenomena, including the diversity of moral rules in time and space. Finally, we give sufficient conditions for universal moral rules to emerge in a sequence of agreements involving two agents only at a time.

According to the moral licensing literature, moral self-perceptions induce compensatory behavior: People who feel moral act less prosocially than those who feel immoral. Conversely, work on moral identity indicates that moral self-perceptions motivate behavioral consistency: People who feel moral act more prosocially than those who feel less so. In three studies, the authors reconcile these propositions by demonstrating the moderating role of conceptual abstraction. In Study 1, participants who recalled performing recent (concrete) moral or immoral behavior demonstrated compensatory behavior, whereas participants who considered temporally distant (abstract) moral behavior demonstrated behavioral consistency. Study 2 confirmed that this effect was unique to moral self-perceptions. Study 3 manipulated whether participants recalled moral or immoral actions concretely or abstractly, and replicated the moderation pattern with willingness to donate real money to charity. Together, these findings suggest that concrete moral self-perceptions activate self-regulatory behavior, and abstract moral self-perceptions activate identity concerns.

Abstract:
In a point set in dimension superior to 1, the statistical distribution of the number of pairs of points as a function of distance between the points of the pair is not uniform. This distribution is not considered in a large number of classic methods based on spatially weighted means used in spatial analysis, such as spatial autocorrelation indices, kernel interpolation methods, or spatial modeling methods (autoregressive, or geographically weighted). It has a direct impact on the calculations and the results of indices and estimations, and by not taking into account this distribution of the distances, spatial analysis calculations can be biased. In this article, we introduce a "spatial standardization", which corrects and adjusts the calculations with respect to the distribution of point pairs distances. As an example, we apply this correction to the calculation of spatial autocorrelation indices (Moran and Geary indices) and to trend surface calculation (by spatial kernel interpolation) on the results of the 2017 French presidential election.

Abstract:
Firms and governments often use moral suasion and economic incentives to influence intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for economic activities. To investigate persistence of such interventions, we randomly assign households to moral suasion and dynamic pricing that stimulate energy conservation during peak-demand hours. We find significant habituation and dishabituation for moral suasion—the treatment effect diminishes after repeated interventions but can be restored to the original level by a sufficient time interval between interventions. Economic incentives induce larger treatment effects, little habituation, and significant habit formation. Our results suggest moral suasion and economic incentives produce substantially different short-run and long-run policy impacts. (JEL C93, D83, L94, L98, Q41, Q48)

Abstract:
A moral model is proposed to understand how men convicted of violence against the partner can feel moral in spite of their past violent behavior and their current violent and sexist attitudes. Because of its appeal to the role of self-deception and its relationship to psychological well-being, it was hypothesized that a rigid conception about what is right and wrong (moral absolutism) is associated with ambivalent outcomes that keep their psychological system in homeostasis. The relationships were specified a priori and tested using path analysis. Several fit indices supported the adequacy of the model and showed that moral absolutism was indirectly related to both psychological well-being and a good moral self-conceptualization through self-deception. At the same time, moral absolutism was related to sexist and violent attitudes and a poor moral self-conceptualization. Future interventions could include strategies to reduce the resistances to change based on the reduction of moral absolutism and self-deception.

Background: Anemia being the expression of the underlying disease is a global public health problemaffecting both developing as well as developed countries. The RBC indices and platelet count variationamong anemic patients are important to know their association for clinical implications.Materials and Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study among anemic patients with hemoglobin<10 gm%, attending Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital, Nepal from 15 May to 15 July 2020 wereanalyzed for RBC indices and platelet count variation. Demographic data, RBC indices, platelet countvariation, and types of anemia were evaluated. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used for correlatingthe platelet count with RBC indices. A Chi-square test was used to know about the association betweenthe types of anemia and platelet count variation. Results: Out of 150 anemic patients, the female to male ratio was 1.5:1, with the most common agegroup between 40-49 years. There exist high differences between minimum and maximum individualRBC indices (Hb, MCV, MCH, MCH) and platelet count values. The platelet count variation with RBCvalues and MCV had a statistically significant positive and negative correlation respectively. However, the correlation between platelet count variation with hemoglobin concentration level and type of anemiawas positive but statistically not significant. Conclusion: Findings suggest that platelet count variation with RBC indices and types of anemiacorrelated well among anemic patients. Such association will enable the clinicians for diagnosing andtreatment purposes.

Abstract:
Echinothrips americanus Morgan, 1913, is one of the pest species that expanded their area of distribution in a relatively short time. Being native to the eastern parts of North America, its first European interception was recorded in 1989. Since then it has invaded greenhouses in most European countries, including Slovakia, where it was first recorded in inspected material at the Botanical garden in Košice. As a polyphagous thrips with a wide host range it may induce damage mainly on ornamentals, although if low in numbers it can be easily overlooked. The species is a suitable example where preventive steps against its spread have not been sufficient enough which, therefore, demands further monitoring. Remarks on morphology, identification, economical importance and control are also given.

Abstract:
At many firms, incentivized salespeople with private information about customers are responsible for customer relationship management. Although incentives motivate sales performance, private information can induce moral hazard by salespeople to gain compensation at the expense of the firm. The authors investigate the sales performance–moral hazard trade-off in response to multidimensional performance (acquisition and maintenance) incentives in the presence of private information. Using unique panel data on customer loan acquisition and repayments linked to salespeople from a microfinance bank, the authors detect evidence of salesperson private information. Acquisition incentives induce salesperson moral hazard, leading to adverse customer selection, but maintenance incentives moderate it as salespeople recognize the negative effects of acquiring low-quality customers on future payoffs. Critically, without the moderating effect of maintenance incentives, the adverse selection effect of acquisition incentives overwhelms the sales-enhancing effects, clarifying the importance of multidimensional incentives for customer relationship management. Reducing private information (through job transfers) hurts customer maintenance but has greater impact on productivity by moderating adverse selection at acquisition. This article also contributes to the recent literature on detecting and disentangling customer adverse selection and customer moral hazard (defaults) with a new identification strategy that exploits the time-varying effects of salesperson incentives.

Abstract:
The present work includes three attempts to replicate the moral licensing effect by Sachdeva, Iliev, and Medin (2009) . The original authors found that writing about positive traits led to lower donations to charity and decreased cooperative behavior. The first two replication attempts (student samples, 95% power based on the initial findings, N Study1 = 105, N Study2 = 150), did not confirm the original results. The third replication attempt (MTurk sample, 95% power based on a meta-analysis on self-licensing, N = 940) also did not confirm the moral licensing effect. We conclude that (1) there is as of yet no strong support for the moral self-regulation framework proposed in Sachdeva et al. (2009) (2) the manipulation used is unlikely to induce moral licensing, and (3) studies on moral licensing should use a neutral control condition.

Abstract:

Summary The author first outlines the reasons that induce professional associations, who draw inspiration from the Church's doctrine, to take on a moral adviser for their members. However, he points out that socio-economic action, even if it is inspired by the Church's doctrine, is and remains the business of laymen. He then studies the true rôle of the adviser in the employers' and workers' associations, his rights, his duties in the sphere to which he is assigned: this rôle is essentially a sacerdotal one.

Abstract:
Decisions regarding the attribution of personhood to nonhuman animals have implications not only for the rights held by a particular species but also for the moral obligations of humans as moral agents. Since humans decide which species are accorded moral standing, thus becoming candidates for legal standing as legal persons, we need to be aware of our own vested interests in where the boundaries of duty are drawn. This paper argues that simple determination of moral standing is not sufficient to induce relevant changes in moral behavior. It examines six problems that emerge for us in determining the personhood of nonhuman animals: identifying which capacities we believe to be morally relevant, separating the identification of capacities from the duty consequences, designing appropriate methodologies for assessing morally relevant capacities in nonhuman animals, identifying relevant claim rights for nonhuman animals, resolving competing moral interests among species and between nonhumans and humans, and ensuring appropriate moral behavior. The conclusion of this examination is that we have a long way to go in order to be consistent in our moral behavior.

This research aims at studying spatial autocorrelation of Landsat/TM based on normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and green vegetation index (GVI) of soybean of the western region of the State of Paraná. The images were collected during the 2004/2005 crop season. The data were grouped into five vegetation index classes of equal amplitude, to create a temporal map of soybean within the crop cycle. Moran I and Local Indicators of Spatial Autocorrelation (LISA) indices were applied to study the spatial correlation at the global and local levels, respectively. According to these indices, it was possible to understand the municipality-based profiles of tillage as well as to identify different sowing periods, providing important information to producers who use soybean yield data in their planning.

Abstract:
The implementation of a deposit insurance scheme entails a trade off. On one hand, as shown in theoretical and empirical studies, a deposit insurance scheme reduces the likelihood of a bank run. On the other hand, a deposit insurance scheme induces moral hazard among bankers that may lead to bank failures. We rigorously test the effect of different deposit coverage limit and the implementation of a differential premium treatment on bankers’ behaviors in the deposit and credit market. We do so by designing a laboratory experiment that involves real bankers as participants. We find that the coverage limit treatments do not have any effect on deposit rate offer. Nevertheless, we find that a high deposit coverage limit induces smaller banks to have a higher share of risky projects. This is evidence of moral hazard particularly among small banks.

Abstract:
Scale is a fundamental geographical concept and its role in different geographical contexts has been widely documented. The increasing availability of transport mobility data, in the form of big datasets, enables further incorporation of spatial dependencies and non-stationarity into spatial interaction modeling of transport flows. In this paper a newly developed multiscale flow-focused geographically weighted regression (MFGWR) approach has been applied, in addition to global and local Moran I indices of flow data, to model multiscale socio-economic determinants of regional transport flows between counties across the Jiangsu Province in China. The results have confirmed the power of local Moran I of flow data for identifying urban agglomerations and the effectiveness of MFGWR in exploring multiscale processes of spatial interactions. A comparison between MFGWR and flow-focused geographically weighted regression (FGWR) showed that the MFGWR approach can better interpret the heterogeneous processes of spatial interaction.

Abstract:
Financial crime is presently a very serious threat to the global, regional and national economies as it manifests itself in several financial institutions and government agencies. One of the reasons for the thriving status of the menace has been lack of globally acknowledged counter measures. Based on this, twenty eight indices that were considered to be related to financial crimes were formulated in this research. A questionnaire was formulated based on the indices and administered on selected financial related agencies and parastatals in States across Nigeria to obtain relevant data which were subjected to Principal Component Analyses (PCA) using SPSS. The analyses showed that effective citizens’ control and monitoring, economic and social stability, moral suasion and political security and goodwill are the much desired counter-measures to financial crime. The percentage of relevance of these measures was 64.17%, indicating that the indices of some extraneous counter-measures were not given consideration in the research. Such measures include but not limited to good governance, financial security and moral training. A coefficient score matrix was also generated for the estimation and ranking of the contribution of every respondent to the extracted counter-measures.

Background: Residents frequently encounter situations in their workplace that may induce moral distress or burnout. The objective of this study was to measure overall and rotation-specific moral distress and burnout in medical residents, and the relationship between demographics and moral distress and burnout. Methods: The revised Moral Distress Scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (Human Service version) were administered to Internal Medicine residents in the 2013-2014 academic year at the University of British Columbia. Results: Of the 88 residents, 45 completed the surveys. Participants (mean age 30+/-3; 46% male) reported a median moral distress score (interquartile range) of 77 (50-96). Twenty-six percent of residents had considered quitting because of moral distress, 21% had a high level of burnout, and only 5% had a low level of burnout. Moral distress scores were highest during Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU) rotations, and lowest during elective rotations (p<0.0001). Women reported higher emotional exhaustion. Moral distress was associated with depersonalization (p=0.01), and both moral distress and burnout were associated with intention to leave the job. Conclusion: Internal Medicine residents report moral distress that is greatest during ICU and CTU rotations, and is associated with burnout and intention to leave the job.

Abstract:
Noise-based quality evaluation of MRI images is highly desired in noise-dominant environments. Current noise-based MRI quality evaluation methods have drawbacks which limit their effective performance. Traditional full-reference methods such as SNR and most of the model-based techniques cannot provide perceptual quality metrics required for accurate diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases. Although techniques based on the Moran coefficients are perceptual quality metrics, they are full-reference methods and will be ineffective in applications where the reference image is not available. Furthermore, the predicted quality scores are difficult to interpret because their quality indices are not standardized. In this paper, we propose a new no-reference perceptual quality evaluation method for grayscale images such as MRI images. Our approach is formulated to mimic how humans perceive an image. It transforms noise level into a standardized perceptual quality score. Global Moran statistics is combined with local indicators of spatial autocorrelation in the form of local Moran statistics. Quality score is predicted from perceptually weighted combination of clustered and random pixels. Performance evaluation, comparative performance evaluation and validation by human observers, shows that the proposed method will be a useful tool in the evaluation of retrospectively acquired MRI images and the evaluation of noise reduction algorithms.
