Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The success of policies aimed at economic development cannot be monitored and evaluated without development indicators. These indicators are also crucial in comparing levels of development across time and space so as to come a greater understanding of the development process. Yet, economic development does not mean the same thing to everyone. As a result, there exists a variety of indicators of economic development. Five main classes of development indicators are distinguished on the basis of the shift over time in our understanding of economic development (Chapter 1). A distinction is drawn between indicators of national income and economic growth (Chapter 3), employment, unemployment and underemployment (Chapter 4), and poverty and inequality (Chapter 5). Social indicators (Chapter 6) and composite indices (Chapter 7) of economic development represent two futher classes of development indicators. These indicators differ in terms of their content, method and technique, comparative application, simplicity, clarity, focus, availability and flexibility. These main classes of development indicators are evaluated with reference to these dimensions of measurement which are described in detail in Chapter 2. There is no one indicator that can be described as an ideal, all encompassing measure of economic development, at least not in terms of its performance on these dimensions of measurement. Hence, the measurement of development remains imperfect, but nonetheless makes an invaluable contribution to the study of economic development. In fact, development studies will be impossible without access to such a variety of development indicators. Given the importance of development indicators in development studies, two new composite indices of development are presented here to address two specific gaps in indicator research. Indices of Human Security (HSIs) and Inefficiency ratios are developed to determine the extent to which countries have made progress on human security as defined by the UNDP (Chapter 8). Progress is assessed in terms of both effort and outcomes, as well as the extent to which efforts are actually translated into outcomes. Indices of Reconstruction and Development (RDIs) are employed to measure the extent to which the nine provinces of South Africa have made progress on the development objectives described in the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) (Chapter 9). The measurement results suggest that there remain substantial disparities in progress on both human security and reconstruction and development. These new composite indices are also employed to determine those development characteristics associated with progress on human security and reconstruction and development. So, for example, disparities in human security are associated with certain urban and population dynamics, as well as communications capacity and infrastructural development. Progress on reconstruction and development is associated with lower population pressure, higher matric pass rates, less poverty and inequality, and more political representativeness at the provincial level. The RDIs also underscore the extent to which progress on the RDP has not materialised in rural areas. Furthermore, current provincial disparities in progress on reconstruction and development appear still to be indicative of the racial dynamics of development so characteristic of the Apartheid era.

Full textThe design of our cities and regions is crucial for our health and well-being. It notably impacts the quality of our living environment, the air we breathe, the water we drink, our access to green spaces, healthcare services, and employment opportunities (OMS & ONU, 2021). Indeed, our health are influenced by numerous factors that go beyond the scope of pathology alone. The focus of this thesis is to develop a decision support tool that local actors can use to better consider health in urban planning and development plans, documents, and projects. The first objective of the thesis is to characterize the environmental and social health inequalities (ESHI) at the sub-municipal level within the perimeter of the European metropolis of Lille's Territorial Coherence Scheme. A literature review and thematic workshops involving local and regional stakeholders were organized, and a methodological framework was proposed for constructing spatialized composite indices of vulnerability and resilience. Furthermore, a methodology for analyzing the profiles of territory categories resulting from the joint interpretation of the two indices was developed. The second objective is to support and promote the consideration of health issues in urban development projects by proposing an experimental approach applied to two development projects. The in-depth analysis of environmental health issues in the two neighborhoods, along with the contribution of the working group composed of the two project teams and field observations, helped to better understand the factors of vulnerability and resilience present in these neighborhoods. It also enabled the evaluation of the impact of the development project on these neighborhoods and the proposal of a theoretical modeling of improvement prospects for the two development proposals. The obtained results highlight the importance of considering not only the vulnerability and resilience factors of territories but also the spatial dimension. Dividing the European metropolis of Lille's Territorial Coherence Scheme into homogeneous zones would facilitate understanding the dynamics of ESHI at a fine scale. The use of composite indices at the scale of a development project brings to light the issue of transversality and the impact of all involved dimensions. At this scale, composite indices provide an overall vision of the issues within a neighborhood, they also reveal the limitations of development policies for reducing ESHI

Full textFor cost-effectiveness and efficiency, many large-scale general-purpose cohort studies are being assembled within health-care providers who use electronic health records. Two key features of such data are that incident disease is interval-censored between irregular visits and pre-existing (prevalent) disease is left-censored. Because prevalent disease is not always immediately diagnosed, some disease diagnosed at later visits are actually undiagnosed prevalent disease. I consider prevalent disease as a point mass at time zero for clinical applications where there is no interest in time of prevalent disease onset. I demonstrate that the naive Kaplan-Meier cumulative risk estimator underestimates risks at early time points and overestimates later risks. I propose a general family of mixture models that we call prevalence-incidence models. Parameters for parametric prevalence-incidence models, such as the logistic regression and Weibull survival (logistic-Weibull) model, are estimated by direct likelihood maximization or EM algorithm. Non-parametric methods are proposed to calculate cumulative risks for cases without covariates. I compare naive Kaplan-Meier, logistic-Weibull, and non-parametric estimates of cumulative risk in the cervical cancer screening program at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. Kaplan-Meier methods provided poor estimates while the logistic-Weibull model was a close fit to the non-parametric. My findings support use of logistic-Weibull models over Kaplan-Meier methods to develop risk estimates for informing U.S. risk-based cervical cancer screening guidelines. Harrell's c index is widely used to measure the accuracy in predicting univariate survival outcomes. However, survival outcomes relating to a disease of interest may show up in multiple endpoints of interest. I propose two extensions of Harrell's c index for composite survival outcomes that account for frequencies of occurrences and the severity/importance of the outcomes. A weighted C index is proposed for a disease process with multiple equally important endpoints, and a most severe comparable C index is proposed for a disease process with a rare primary outcome and a correlated secondary outcome. Asymptotic properties are derived based on theorems for U-statistics. In the simulation studies, my extensions gain efficiency and power in identifying true prognostic variables. I illustrate these novel concordance indices using the Epidemiology of Diabetes Intervention and Complications (EDIC) and the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) trials. In EDIC, the prognosis of diabetes patients at risk for multiple equally important microvascular complications are evaluated using the weighted C index. In DPP, patients with impaired glucose resistance (IGR) who may either progress to type II diabetes or regress to normal glucose resistance (NGR). The proposed most severe comparable index better evaluates the accuracy in predicting diabetes risk with the help of auxiliary NGR outcomes.

Full textThis work is a contribution to the study of the glass transition and of constrained glass forming liquid a main relaxation. This work focuses on molecular relaxation study in samples constituted of a PETg amorphous matrix in which a Montmorillonite lamellar clay is dispersed at different contents. Glass forming liquid characterisation shows that the more “fragile” the glass forming liquid, the greater the cooperative rearranging regions, according to the Donth’s approach. The Random Walk Model application, according to Arkhipov and Bässler, highlights the very low influence of lamellar particles on energetic minima distribution functions. The molecular relaxation characterising parameter variations are attributed to an interphase bi-layer between the filler and the matrix

Full textThe photopolymerization process has been optimized for the elaboration of thick epoxy composite materials (> 1 mm) through a cationic mechanism. The study of the photopolymerization kinetics of two epoxy resins (glycidyl ether and cycloaliphatic) has shown that the addition of a silica microsphere reinforcement induced conversion gradient in the material thickness, resulting from a light absorption and/or scattering phenomenon. The light scattering is all the more important as the refractive index gap between filler and matrix is high. However, this conversion heterogeneity has been compensated by a postpolymerization reaction at room temperature. Then, the analysis of the mechanical properties has shown that it was possible to obtain thick composite materials homogeneously crosslinked and whose rigidity was increased by the presence of the filler. In addition, the strategy of equalizing the filler and matrix refractive indices, coupled with the radical induced cationic frontal polymerization (RICFP) opens interesting perspectives for the development of photocomposites several centimeters thick using only a light stimulus

Full textCrohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory condition with an unknown etiology, and environmental factors are among the potential causes. Among these factors, soil contamination has never been studied, although many soil pollutants have been associated with the disease in epidemiological studies. France has the world's largest Crohn's disease registry, EPIMAD, which covers four departments: Nord, Somme, Pas-de-Calais, and Seine-Maritime, where spatial clusters of high- and low-incidence have been identified. These clusters open the door to environmental studies. Therefore, an environmental approach to soil quality has become necessary: do the soils in the clusters differ in terms of quality? Are there variations in pollutant concentrations between high and low-incidence clusters? If so, what are the elements or cocktail of elements involved? The objective of our study is to characterize the soils within these clusters and collect extensive data on potential soil pollutants to compare soil qualities between the clusters. This thesis initially adopted a data reuse approach, characterizing soils on the basis of existing data and refining interpretation using a composite index, the "mean impregnation ratio" (RIM). Given the scarcity of available data, two large-scale soil sampling campaigns were launched in the disease clusters. The first was aimed at screening for the contaminants most frequently found in soils. The second campaign adapted a targeted approach, targeting pollutants showing an association with Crohn's disease in the literature. Thus, 14 molecules belonging to the endocrine disruptors, antibiotics and drugs most commonly used in humans were measured in soils. As the measurement of these molecules within this complex matrix is not yet normalized, an analytical method was developed to detect these pollutants, and sample analyses were carried out in accordance with this established protocol. This approach generated more than 81,000 new data on the soil pollutants sampled. Existing databases were used to characterize the physical landscape of the clusters and identify sources of contamination. They also enabled us to detect a correlation between heavy metals in agricultural soils and the incidence of Crohn's disease. Furthermore, from an ecological point of view, the detection of hormones in forested areas at concentrations higher than those reported in the literature, constitutes a pioneering result of this thesis. To date, based on initial analyses and interpretations, emerging pollutants have shown no significant difference between over- and under-incidence clusters. We recommend more focused studies on pollutants related to agricultural practices and their effects on Crohn's disease, a promising avenue of investigation in our study

Full textThe aim of the work is to provide a theoretical framework regarding the multidimensional concept of vulnerability of local systems, then applying it to a case study on Italian provinces. The first chapter outlines a theoretical framework of this concept, using a reading of the phenomenon according to a systemic mold, whereby the risk is positively correlated with spatial vulnerability factors and negatively with resilience factors. Region is represented in the three dimensions of sustainability, that is the economic, social and environmental ones, following a holistic approach. The second one applies the theoretical framework for a study on the Italian provinces. We have adopted a method of synthesis by successive steps, which provides the application of multivariate techniques. We arrive at an indicators system and composite indices of economic, social and environmental vulnerability and resilience. In the third one we reach the composite indices of vulnerability and resilience of local systems, comparing different methods of aggregation among themselves. Systems are identified as most at risk, because more vulnerable and less gifted with factors of response to change. Elements of originality are highlighted in terms of theoretical project for the treatment of the theme in the distinct dimensions Economy, Society and Environment, as well as, at empirical level, the usage of hybrid synthesis methods.

Full textThe aim of our study is to bridge certain gasps due to the approach of some researchers who analysemessiaen's organ works without heeding the composer's scriptural clues. Although it may mean commenting upon the composer's work in an approach taking up, word for word, the proclaimed intentions of the author. Not to be doomed to ignore the difficulties raised by the epigraphic quotations as a revelation of the scriptures connected with the indices of the johannine corpus and the gospels of christ's childhood, the whole transferred in a network of scores, we have brought out five great theological themes open to the rhetoric and representation of composition. These themes define the framework or our research in five books and persist in thinking organ writing as a reality of the broken scriptural indice. Thus established, our reflection organizes a true survey of the musical movement that reveals the stakes of a discourse within which an entirely cancealed rhetoric is articulated

Full textOver the last three decades research on the French East India Company has seen a new impetus. If today the economic, administrative and political functioning components of this mercantile adventure and the French presence in the Indian Ocean are well known, the milieu quotidian of its players in the trading posts are less such. The present thesis focuses on French society in Pondicherry and on its daily environment, material culture being its starting point. Using the French notarial archives of India in the XVIII century, it is possible to redraw this ultramarine society and to understand much more than the simple material environment. The methods of the establishment and of the European adaptation in India can thus be clarified. Afterwards, the strictly material structure is identifiable: the supply of French possessions of the Indian Ocean, which define the consumption, the logic and choices of internal organization, etc. Finally, the cultural environment in which Europeans evolve in the Indian trading posts is accessible, notably as a result of studying individual’s degree of integration into the Indian Ocean culture. Did they seek to preserve their own European culture or were they ‘indianised”? Are there some differences noticeable according to the period, social categories and professionals studied? To answer these questions, the European and Asian museum’s collections, as well as the French trading posts architectural patrimony of India in the XVIII century, will enhance and complete the archive sources

The work was carried out in the Seed Laboratory of the Agronomy Department, in the Cerrado Biomass Laboratory of the Department of Nutrition and in the Laboratory of Plant Anatomy of the Department of Biological Sciences of the Federal University of the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys - UFVJM, Diamantina, MG. Seeds of CNPA G2 (lot 1) from the 2010 crop, CNPA G3 (lot 2) from the 2010 crop, CNPA G4 (lot 3) from the 2014 crop and BRS Silk (lot 4) from the 2015 harvest were used, provided by Embrapa Algod?o ? Para?ba and safflower grains purchased from the company Terra dos P?ssaros, harvest 2015. To characterize sesame and safflower seedlings, analysis was conducted for the variables moisture level, germination, first germination count, speed index, emergence, initial booth, emergence speed index. In order to ascertain the sanitary quality of the lots, a sanitary test was performed. The determination of the centesimal composition of the sesame and safflower seeds was also carried out. For the morphological characterization of seed and seedlings the biometric aspects were evaluated and the characteristics of their structures were analyzed. In addition, the studies of seed image analysis, the anatomical characterization, were carried out. In addition, the studies of image analysis were carried out with the help of the SAS System and the anatomical characterization. It was concluded that the sesame seed lots presented similar physiological quality and that part of the physiological quality may have been affected by the presence of pathogens in the lots. The centesimal composition confirmed the species as oleaginous. The image analysis allowed to verify characteristics for the distinction between the lots of sesame seeds. Anatomical analyzes between batches were similar. It was verified that the low rate of germination of safflower grains is due to sanitary quality. It has been found that safflower grains are high in fiber.

Full textThis research focuses on the challenges and interactions between the manufacturing processes (Resin Transfer Molding ‘RTM’ and Compression Resin Transfer Molding ‘CRTM’), the mechanical properties, and the reliability of composite material structures; more specifically the functional composites. A number of numerical models have been developed for simulating the suspension (resin + particles) impregnation through the fibrous medium (fibers) in the RTM and CRTM processes. These models are validated by comparing their results with experimental, semi-analytical, and analytical ones from the literature. A parametric study is carried out to demonstrate the impact of various process parameters on particles’ distribution in the final composite. Moreover, a comparison between the injection and compression modes is done. The results of this part show that the distribution of particles in the final part depends on the initial concentration, the distance travelled, and the initial fibers’ volume fraction. However, it is independent of the parameters values of injection and compression. It is also observed that the CRTM process with imposed pressure injection and imposed force compression represents the most favorable scenario for producing composite parts. For the purpose of controlling the final particles’ distribution in the composite material, manufactured by the RTM process, two key steps have been identified. The first step consists in a sensitivity analysis that examines three parameters: the temporal evolution of the initial injected particles’ concentration, the injection pressure field and the initial fibers’ porosity. The conclusions indicate a minimal impact of the initial porosity and the injection pressure field; while the evolution of the initial concentration of the injected particles has a dominant effect. In a second step, an optimization algorithm is implemented in the numerical model of the RTM process. It is used to determine the optimal configuration of the initial injected particles’ concentration’s evolution; in order to approximate the particles’ distribution in the final composite to the desired profiles. The obtained results from the genetic algorithm provide a very satisfactory control of this distribution. To complete this section, a model, estimating the mechanical properties of the manufactured part, is developed. It is found that there is a positive correlation between the particles’ fraction and certain mechanical properties, namely the elastic modulus E11 and E22, and the shear modulus G12 and G23. Nevertheless, the Poisson’s ratio (Nu12) is inversely proportional to the particles’ fraction. Also, the shear module G12 is the most significantly influenced by this fraction.Following this, the control of the mechanical properties of the composite parts, manufactured by the CRTM process, is targeted, and compared to the results of the RTM process. The conclusions reveal that the RTM process offers a better control of these properties. Whereas, the CRTM process improves considerably the mechanical properties of the parts due to its compression phase, which increases the fibers’ volume fraction and consequently enhances these properties. Finally, a static analysis is conducted based on the developed numerical model that uses the finite element method (Ansys APDL). This model is combined with those of the CRTM process and the mechanical properties calculation. An optimization algorithm is integrated in our global model to adapt the mechanical properties of the composite part according to the configuration (cantilever or simply supported) and the load distribution. Moreover, it minimizes the composite part’s weight and ensures the respect of the predetermined mechanical constraints such as the maximum deformation limit. The obtained results correspond perfectly to these objectives

Full textThus, the goal of this research is to identify the relevant factors that promote digital development, to define and describe - on that basis - its different stages and to explain the causes why a particular country might therefore be classified as a digital leader or a laggard and, lastly, answer whether and why governments should foster the Information Society.
To address this goal we have split our research into three main areas:
Analyzing the available tools for measuring the digital economy; and
Defining the stages of digital development, their characteristics and their causes; in particular, isolating the role of the public sector.
In the first area of research we cover the impact of ICTs, the concepts of access and the digital divide and the need to foster digital development. Our research questions in this area are:
What is "access"? What are its components?
What are the main approaches to defining access and why?
Is there any evidence that access to ICTs has had a positive or negative impact on the general socio-economic development of a country?
Why may there be a lack of access in a particular country or region, or to use a more familiar term, a "digital divide"?
Is it worthwhile for governments to attempt to foster digital development to accelerate the positive impacts of access to ICTs?
The second research theme explores, broadly and in depth, the ways in which access, digital development and the digital divide have been measured over the years, in particular through the use of composite indices. The related research questions are as follows:
What are the main models that depict digital development?
What are the approaches that these models follow to describe digital development?
What are the consequences of the different approaches followed in defining digital development models?
The third and final research theme focuses on the different stages, or phases, of digital development, their main characteristics and the reasons why digital development at the country level might be unevenly distributed.
Can we group countries according to their different levels of digital development and thus define a comprehensive model for measuring it?
What are the characteristics that enable us to cluster together countries according to their specific level of digital development?
What are the characteristics that distinguish between different levels of digital development?
Why some countries are more digitally developed than others?
The findings and reflections arising from these research questions should enable us to test the general hypothesis that guides our research. We believe that narrow institutional interests and a lack of appropriate data have led to a biased or fragmented measurement of digital development that is often focused on specific purposes. But if digital development is conceived as a continuum and described by means of a comprehensive model, then, at the country level, it can be observed that digital development happens in stages. These stages can be characterized by common features and distinguished by the scores achieved on certain key indicators. The improvement of its general economic indicators - such as income and wealth - characterizes the progression of a country along this continuum depends mainly on. Besides these basic economic aspects, if there is an appropriate Economic Incentive Regime, strong Government prioritization of ICT and a high importance afforded to ICTs in the Government's vision of the future, then digital development is much more likely to happen. In some cases, these policies may allow leapfrogging so that a country can progress faster in its digital development than would be predicted by its general level of economic development.

Full textAmong chronic diseases, Crohn's disease (CD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have a multifactorial etiology that remains partly unknown, with a strong suspicion of an environmental link. The spatial distribution of their incidence has been mapped at the municipal level in Northern France, using two health registers (Epimad and Nephronor). These spatial disparities in incidence serve as the starting point to investigate potential environmental determinants that may be involved in the onset of these diseases. The characterization of the environment and its link to health is often approached in a fragmented manner, focusing on a specific emission source, pollutant, or exposure medium. While these approaches are necessary, they may be limited in comprehending the complexity of the relationship between the environment and health, especially for multifactorial diseases with unknown environmental risk factors. In such cases, it is relevant to prioritize territorial and multidimensional strategies before potentially targeting specific environmental risk factors. In this context, how can multiple open environmental data sources be leveraged to identify territorial determinants of multifactorial diseases? The main objective of this thesis is to offer an integrated description of the environment at the territorial level to inform the etiology of the studied diseases. The strategy involved collecting and reusing open environmental data. This approach identified 24 data sources and generated 113 spatial indicators at the municipal level for four departments. These indicators allow for the characterization of contamination levels in various media (air, water, soil), pollutant emissions, the location of emission sources, land use, agricultural practices, the natural features of territories, and climate. Several methodologies were used to exploit these indicators and characterize the environment from a multidimensional perspective.A first approach involved developing composite spatial indices. These indices synthesize information from many indicators into a single global measure. Initially, vulnerability and resilience indices were calculated. They characterize the uneven spatial distribution of environmental determinants that have a beneficial or detrimental impact on health. Subsequently, composite indices of multi-media contamination (air, water, soil) were constructed.A second approach was developed using multivariate classification methods to create territorial typologies and describe the environmental profiles of municipalities. These results provide a more complex view of territories and have allowed to understand how environmental pressures are distributed in space and overlap with each other. Finally, the results of these multidimensional approaches were linked to spatial variations in the incidence of chronic diseases, suggesting potential connections between the environment and the occurrence of these pathologies. For ES-CKD, associations were observed with urban pressure and fine particulate air pollution, corroborating existing literature. For CD, links were suggested with agricultural practices, the natural characteristics of territories, and metallic soil pollution. Further epidemiological approaches are now needed to test these hypotheses and advance research in this area

Full textCement-based materials exhibit low tensile strength and poor strain capacity. They are brittle and are very sensitive to cracking particularly to shrinkage cracking in large area applications. Sawn joints allow shrinkage cracking to be localised a way to avoid unsightly cracking. Unfortunately they are also the starting point of future distress (ingress of aggressive agent, curling, etc.).This work is a contribution to the design of a cement-based material exhibiting an enhanced strain capacity. For a such objective rubber aggregates (RAs) obtained from grinding end of life tyres partly replacing natural sand have been used. Results showed that RAs are detrimental to the properties of the fresh materials (workability and segregation). However the use of optimized content of a superplasticiser and of a viscosity agent allows the required behaviour to be achieved. With regard to harden state, RAs reduce the strength and the modulus of elasticity of the composite but the strain capacity corresponding to the macrocracking formation is significantly improved. Specific tests showed that RAs reduced the propensity of the material for shrinkage cracking, offering an interest for large surface area such as pavements.Analysis by a scalar damage variable and by acoustic emission is in a good agreement with expected effect of RAs on the cracking kinetics and on the mechanical behaviour of the composite. The interest of the rubberized concrete in large area application such as concrete pavements has been studied and confirmed through the Elastic Quality Index. Given the major role of the modulus of elasticity of the composite on the new properties and expected applications, tools aimed to predict this modulus of elasticity as a function of RAs content are of practical benefit. With this purpose, the work allowed the relevance of some analytical models to be tested. In this context, the lower Hashin-Shtrikman bound which remains perfectible proved to be the most appropriate. Finally, apart from application of civil engineering material, the use of RAs from grinding end of life tyres is a solution of recovery of an industrial by-product and a contribution to a clean environment

Full textThe Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the etiologic agent of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). AIDS is a disease which has a global distribution, and it is estimated that there are currently at least 36.9 million people infected with the virus. During the replication cycle, HIV promotes several changes in the physiology of the host cell to promote their survival and enhance replication. The fast progression of HIV-1 in humans and animal models is closely linked to the function of an accessory protein Nef. Among several actions of Nef, one is the most important is the down-regulation of proteins from the immune response, such as the CD4 receptor. It is known that this action causes CD4 degradation in lysosome, but the molecular mechanisms are still incompletely understood. Nef forms a tripartite complex with the cytosolic tail of the CD4 and adapter protein 2 (AP-2) in clathrin-coated vesicles, inducing CD4 internalization and lysosome degradation. Previous research has demonstrated that CD4 target to lysosomes by Nef involves targeting of this receptor to multivesicular bodies (MVBs) pathway by an atypical mechanism because, although not need charging ubiquitination, depends on the proteins from ESCRTs (Endosomal Sorting Complexes Required for Transport) machinery and the action of Alix, an accessory protein ESCRT machinery. It has been reported that Nef interacts with subunits of AP- 1, AP-2, AP-3 complexes and Nef does not appear to interact with AP-4 and AP-5 subunits. However, the role of Nef interaction with AP-1 or AP-3 in CD4 down-regulation is poorly understood. Furthermore, AP-1, AP-2 and AP-3 are potentially heterogeneous due to the existence of multiple subunits isoforms encoded by different genes. However, there are few studies to demonstrate if the different combinations of APs isoforms are form and if they have distinct functional properties. This study aim to identify and characterize cellular factors involved on CD4 down-modulation induced by Nef from HIV-1. More specifically, this study aimed to characterize the involvement of AP-1 complex in the down-regulation of CD4 by Nef HIV-1 through the functional study of the two isoforms of ?-adaptins, AP-1 subunits. By pull-down technique, we showed that Nef is able to interact with ?2. In addition, our data from immunoblots indicated that ?2- adaptin, not ?1-adaptin, is required in Nef-mediated targeting of CD4 to lysosomes and the ?2 participation in this process is conserved by Nef from different viral strains. Furthermore, by flow cytometry assay, ?2 depletion, but not ?1 depletion, compromises the reduction of surface CD4 levels induced by Nef. Immunofluorescence microscopy analysis also revealed that ?2 depletion impairs the redistribution of CD4 by Nef to juxtanuclear region, resulting in CD4 accumulation in primary endosomes. Knockdown of ?1A, another subunit of AP-1, resulted in decreased cellular levels of ?1 and ?2 and, compromising the efficient CD4 degradation by Nef. Moreover, upon artificially stabilizing ESCRT-I in early endosomes, via overexpression of HRS, internalized CD4 accumulates in enlarged HRS-GFP positive endosomes, where co-localize with ?2. Together, the results indicate that ?2-adaptin is a molecule that is essential for CD4 targeting by Nef to ESCRT/MVB pathway, being an important protein in the endo-lysosomal system. Furthermore, the results indicate that ?-adaptins isoforms not only have different functions, but also seem to compose AP-1 complex with distinct cell functions, and only the AP-1 variant comprising ?2, but not ?1, acts in the CD4 down-regulation induced by Nef. These studies contribute to a better understanding on the molecular mechanisms involved in Nef activities, which may also help to improve the understanding of the HIV pathogenesis and the related syndrome. In addition, this work contributes with the understanding of primordial process regulation on intracellular trafficking of transmembrane proteins.

The purpose of this study is aimed through an overall review of Taipower’s performance at building up an evaluation scale exclusively for this power industry and state-run enterprise under a specific business environment so as to make quick reflection of its performance. A detailed literature study is first made with reference to world-class power corporations at the global top 500 level, and a five-dimension index is concluded, namely productivity, electricity demand & supply management, cost, finance and electric rates. Categorized in these dimensions, a total of 18 variables such as installed capacity, production, peak load, price, etc. are adopted as indices for further variable analysis. Using factor analysis and taking the years 1963 to 2002 as a data base, the power performance composite indices are worked out and summarized below. 1.Through factor analysis, three composite indices are extracted for performance evaluation, namely operating ability, profitability and liquidity, which account for 90.44% of the total variance. 2.The standardized scores derived from of Taipower 1963 to 2002 composite indices indicate that the results meet with its actual performance. 3.It also indicates through the above-said 2003 Performance Evaluation Scale that Taipower’s performance on operating ability and liquidity can keep pace with that of 2002; while its profitability tends declining. It is thus suggested that Taipower keep on its cost cut policy to upgrade the profitability.

Run-to-run processes are often seen in semiconductor manufacturing. They can be expressed by a linear regression equation, where the intercept and slope terms represent the output disturbance and time-varying process gain respectively. To reject these two kinds of disturbances, the thesis proposes robust controller designs based on the internal model and quasi internal model control structures, respectively. Under the designated robustness constraints on the H-infinity norm and delay margin, the optimal performance can be obtained for run-to-run operation. Deterministic ramp drifts and stochastic IMA(1,1) disturbances usually occur in semiconductor processes, which result in transient deviations and persistent random variations in the process output, respectively. To evaluate their effects on control performance, the thesis derives closed-form formulae for a transient performance index and a long-run performance index. A composite performance index, obtained by multiplying the transient and long-run indices by their respective weighting factors, then serves as the criterion for the selection of controller parameters. The selection of the weighting factors is a trade-off between the different output effects from the deterministic and stochastic disturbances. Metrology delays in run-to-run processes are uncertain and stochastic. Therefore, a controller with a fixed delay could hardly yield good performance. The thesis develops a hybrid run-to-run controller design by virtue of specifying appropriate robustness and alternating between two filters with different delays. The hybrid design can achieve much better performance in the presence of stochastic delays.

In this research﹐MWNTs were modified by mix acid(H2SO4:HNO3=3:1,vol%) under sonication for pretreatment to overcome the compatibility between polyimide and carbon nanotubes. The MWNTs were grafted with carboxylic groups on the wall of the tubes. Besides, APrTEOS was introduced as coupling agent. With ethoxysilane group, it can react with precursor of polyimide(PAA), which then combined with modified carbon nantubes(carboxylic group) to form covalent bond. The PI/MWNTs composites were obtained by a spin coating and multi-step thermal curing process. In this study, the MWNTs were introduced into the matrix in order to increase its electrical and mechanical properties. The effect on PI/MWNTs composite with MWNTs unmodified or acid modified in four or six hours were also discussed. The structure of prepared PI-MWNTs was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometr. The thermal properties, mechanical properties of PI-MWNTs nanocomposite were analyzed by Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Universal Test Machine and Hardness Pencil Test. The morphology of PI-MWNTs was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The dispersion of MWNTs in matrix were observed by transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The electrical property of composite were obtained by Super Megohmmeter.
