Abstract:
From the point of view of the new science of globalism, the problems of the ecological, socio-economic state of the world and countries are considered through the prism of the interaction of the human psyche and society and the inhabited world. The criteria of ecological civilization of countries and peoples are justified. Optimizing the consumption of natural bio-and energy resources is becoming a fundamental environmental factor for sustainable development. The "Law of the maximum for humanity" as the law of the biosphere can be the arbitration court, the neutral force that will explain the historical need for mutual understanding, taking into account the interests of ecology and economy for the survival of man as a biovid on Earth; a new reality will begin to form — the phenomenon of co-residence of the world society with the biosphere. The world's population, its energy and bio-consumption, as well as all living matter on the planet, must correspond to the biological capacity of the Earth and not go beyond its boundaries. The task of the society is to implement a worldview breakthrough at the current stage of development, its own cultural mutation, which in the future will create the basis for adaptive technological and socio-cultural development. The task is to classify the entire Earth as a "Green Book" and to solve systemic environmental problems of a global nature. An integral part of sustainable development should be the principle of "vital consumption" at both the personal and social level, instead of the dominant principle of"expanded production and consumption". The indicator of the" culture of consumption "of natural resources, both at the individual level and at the level of society, should be included as an integral part of the integral indicator in the "True Indicator of Progress" and the "Human Development Index". The book is interdisciplinary in nature; it is a kind of scientific and philosophical poetic essay intended for teachers and students of universities in the field of sociology, ecology, biology and related fields, as well as for everyone who cares about the future of society.

Abstract:
Methods in Linguistics is a collection of articles presenting a broad variety of methods and approaches in the field of linguistics. It offers structure to the spectrum of methodological possibilities and helps the reader to identify the field of application as well as the strengths and weaknesses of different methods. The book consists of an extensive introductory part and a variety of articles, each written by experts of the method in question. It discusses questions related to different kinds of data and data collection, as well as methods used for analysing data. Since the methods used in linguistics are often related to a specific linguistic current, the book offers examples from a wide range of linguistic approaches. The book is addressed to students, researchers and other readers interested in the methods used in linguistics. The general methodological and metatheoretical knowledge offered in the introduction guides the reader through the different methodological choices presented and helps the reader to select the best method to meet her needs. First, the research process is explained step-by-step from the selection of topic and data to questions related to research design, analysis and the reporting of the results. The second part of the introduction focuses on fundamental theoretical and methodological questions, such as the criteria for knowledge, the nature of scientific knowledge and the scientific method. The third part addresses more specifically the methodology of linguistics, discussing the multifaceted nature of natural language and linguistics as a discipline. The introduction also covers many current topics in science, such as research ethics, data protection and open science principles. The book can be used as self-study material by students and researchers alike, or as course material in higher education. Learning is supported by the careful definition of terms, extensive indexes and additional readings suggested for each topic.

Abstract:
Acute on chronic liver failure is characterized by an acute deterioration of liver function in a patient with previously compensated cirrhosis secondary to a precipitating event. It is most commonly associated with a very poor prognosis and early identification of the precipitating cause is essential to successfully attempt to reverse decompensation. The most common precipitant is infection and a high index of suspicion is required. Other management is largely supportive with close attention to renal dysfunction being particularly important. All patients admitted to the intensive care unit with complications of cirrhosis warrant consultation with a transplant centre to determine whether they fulfil the criteria for transplantation and for expert advice.

Afrand, Mohammadhosain, Mohammad Afkhami-Ardekani, Ahmad Shojaoddiny-Ardekani, and Azita Ariaeinejad. Metabolic Syndrome and Ethnic Groups Second edition. Knowledge Kingdom Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.26415/978-9931-9446-4-5.

Full text
Abstract:
Metabolic syndrome is defined as the co-occurrence of metabolic risk factors for both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (i.e. abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertension). Indeed, metabolic syndrome is an important risk factor for subsequent development of type 2 diabetes and/or CVD. Thus, the key clinical implication of a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome is the identification of a patient who needs aggressive lifestyle modification focused on weight reduction and increased physical activity. Multiple different phenotypes and ethnic-specific values for waist circumference are included within metabolic syndrome, with indications for differing treatment strategies. This book covers several aspects of metabolic syndrome, including its definition, diagnostic criteria, preventive measures, and treatment, as well as the possible association between ethnicity and the occurrence of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the three regions—sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Former Soviet Union—and the nine countries—Armenia, Benin, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Kenya, Malawi, Russia, and Ukraine—that provide the empirical material for the book. It introduces the two criteria used for case selection: 1) democratic competitiveness; 2) de jure and de facto constitutional provisions that empower presidents to be coalitional formateurs. It also introduces a variable that measures the salience of cross-party cooperation: the Index of Coalitional Necessity. Finally, it sketches the political landscape that has shaped the dynamics of coalitional presidentialism within each region, and it draws attention to important contextual differences between the nine country cases.

Brown, Steven D., and Paula Reavey. Contextualizing Autobiographical Remembering: An Expanded View of Memory. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198737865.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary reformulations of the nature of “the psychological” call out for different approaches to autobiographical memory. If epistemic and methodological differences are set aside, debate can be focused on four key themes—function, accessibility, accuracy, and life story. What persons do with memory needs to be indexed to the interactional contexts where the past is invoked, where the accessibility of autobiographical memories is a collaborative accomplishment. While the accuracy of memory is nearly always at issue, the criterion and procedures through which it is established vary across practices, as do capacities to produce biographical coherency. An “expanded” or “modern” view of memory should seek to analyze brains, voices, objects, and settings together.

Full text
Abstract:
The idea that the moral character of a work may be intimately linked to its artistic value can be traced back to Aristotle, who suggests that moral criteria help pick out tragedies that are good or bad as such. Indeed, when outlining the correct standards in dramatic art, he claims that ‘it is correct to find fault with both illogicality and moral baseness, if there is no necessity for them and if the poet makes no use of the illogicality (as with Euripedes and the case of Aegeus) or the baseness (as with Menelaus's in Orestes)’. One way of taking this claim is to hold that the moral character of a work may affect its artistic value indirectly. This article turns first to an examination of this kind of view.

Mithun, Marianne. Polysynthesis in North America. Edited by Michael Fortescue, Marianne Mithun, and Nicholas Evans. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199683208.013.16.

Abstract:
North America is generally regarded as an area rich in polysynthetic languages. Structures usually associated with the type are indeed pervasive, but the variety they show indicates that neither polysynthesis itself, nor any of the characteristics typically cited, is monolithic or criterial. Each property shows varying degrees of development and robustness, none of which is predictive of any of the others. Nevertheless, a survey of the languages shows that the characteristics do tend to co-occur, and furthermore that particular semantic and structural patterns of development can be seen in major linguistic areas, suggesting that language contact may play a role in shaping the type.

Watts, Richard A., and David G. I. Scott. Vasculitis—classification and diagnosis. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199642489.003.0130.

Full text
Abstract:
The vasculitides are a group of conditions characterized by inflammation and necrosis of blood vessels; they are generally of unknown aetiology. The classification of vasculitides is based on the size of vessel involved and whether there is a known cause (secondary) or not (primary). This approach has stood the test of time. The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) in 1990 produced classification criteria for the major types of vasculitis and in 1994 definitions were promulgated by the Chapel Hill Consensus Conference. These did not include anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibodies (ANCA) and the ACR scheme did not include microscopic polyangiitis. The definitions have recently been updated to include modern concepts of pathogenesis including ANCA. No validated diagnostic criteria are available for routine clinical practice. The diagnosis of vasculitis requires a high index of suspicion, especially in the systemically unwell patient with multiorgan involvement. The key to diagnosis is a detailed and systematic approach to patient assessment involving all potentially involved organs. In a patient with suspected vasculitis immediate urinalysis is mandatory as the severity of renal involvement at presentation is a major determinant of outcome. Each potentially involved organ should be comprehensively evaluated. Tissue biopsy should be obtained whenever possible, as treatment is potentially toxic using glucocorticoids combined with cytotoxic agents. Biopsy should not, however, delay initiation of treatment. Potential alternative diagnosis should be considered, especially infection and malignancy, and excluded whenever possible.

Poe, Edgar Allan. Selected Tales. Edited by David Van Leer. Oxford University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199535774.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Since their first publication in the 1830s and 1840s, Edgar Allan Poe's extraordinary Gothic tales have established themselves as classics of horror fiction and have also created many of the conventions which still dominate the genre of detective fiction. Yet, as well as being highly enjoyable, Poe's tales are works of very real intellectual exploration. Abandoning the criteria of characterization and plotting in favour of blurred boundaries between self and other, will and morality, identity and memory, Poe uses the Gothic to question the integrity of human existence. Indeed, Poe is less interested in solving puzzles or in moral retribution than in exposing the misconceptions that make things seem ‘mysterious’ in the first place. Attentive to the historical and political dimensions of these very American tales, this new critical edition selects twenty-four tales and places the most popular - ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’, ‘The Masque of the Red Death’, The Murders in the Rue Morgue; and ‘The Purloined Letter’ - alongside less well-known travel narratives, metaphysical essays and political satires.

Lucas, Nuala, Colleen D. Acosta, and Marian Knight. Sepsis in obstetrics. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198713333.003.0034.

Full text
Abstract:
Sepsis in pregnancy and the puerperium remains a significant cause of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. Major morbidity arising as a result of obstetric sepsis includes fetal demise, organ failure, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic pelvic pain, bilateral tubal occlusion, and infertility. Sepsis may arise at any time during pregnancy and the puerperium. Prior to the advent of routine prophylactic antibiotics for caesarean delivery, endometritis used to be a major cause of postpartum infection. Diagnosis can be difficult as the physiological changes of pregnancy can overlap significantly with the pathophysiology of sepsis. The clinician must often rely on a high index of clinical suspicion rather than objective criteria. Women at risk of infection should be identified early in pregnancy. Management of the septic pregnant patient must encompass resuscitation, identification, and treatment of the source of sepsis and management of complications such as hypotension and tissue hypoxia. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommend that sepsis should be managed in accordance with the Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines. Anaesthetists have broad experience in all the elements required to care for a sick parturient and obstetric anaesthetists are key members of the team required to successfully manage these women.

Cassin, Barbara. The Muses and Philosophy: Elements for a History of the Pseudos [1991]. Translated by Samuel Galson. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474412094.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Barbara Cassin’s “The Muses and Philosophy: Elements for a History of the ‘Pseudos’” (1991; translated by Samuel Galson), investigates Plato’s attempt in the Sophist to distinguish the philosopher from the sophist. Cassin pinpoints the slippery operation of the pseudos through the texts of Parmenides and Hesiod. Yet Parmenides’ rejection of not-being allows the sophist to claim infallibility. Plato’s Eleatic Stranger shows that Parmenides’ rejection of not-being is self-refuting (thus the Stranger’s famous parricide is just as much Parmenides’ suicide). Further, although the Stranger ultimately fails to find a criterion for truth or falsity, he nevertheless establishes a place for the pseudos in the distinction between logos tinos (speech of something) and logos peri tinos (speech about something). Ultimately, Cassin argues that reality of pseudos is a condition for the possibility of language, and indeed involves the very materiality and breadth of language.

de Melo-Martín, Inmaculada, and Kristen Intemann. The Fight Against Doubt. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190869229.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Current debates about climate change or vaccine safety provide an alarming illustration of the potential impacts of dissent about scientific claims. False beliefs about evidence and the conclusions that can be drawn from it are commonplace, as is corrosive doubt about the existence of widespread scientific consensus. Deployed aggressively and to political ends, ill-founded dissent can intimidate scientists, stymie research, and lead both the public and policymakers to oppose important policies firmly rooted in science. To criticize dissent is, however, a fraught exercise. Skepticism and fearless debate are key to the scientific process, making it both vital and incredibly difficult to characterize and identify dissent that is problematic in its approach and consequences. Indeed, as de Melo-Martín and Intemann show, the criteria commonly proposed as means of identifying inappropriate dissent are flawed, and the strategies generally recommended to tackle such dissent are not only ineffective but could even make the situation worse. The Fight against Doubt proposes that progress on this front can best be achieved by enhancing the trustworthiness of the scientific community and being more realistic about the limits of science when it comes to policymaking. It shows that a richer understanding is needed of the context in which science operates so as to disarm problematic dissent and those who deploy it in the pursuit of their goals.

Farb, Benson, and Dan Margalit. Moduli Space. Princeton University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691147949.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. The moduli space parameterizes many different kinds of structures on Sɡ, such as isometry classes of hyperbolic structures on S, conformal classes of Riemannian metrics on S, biholomorphism classes of complex structures on S, and isomorphism classes of smooth algebraic curves homeomorphic to S. The chapter first considers the moduli space as the quotient of Teichmüller space before discussing the moduli space of the torus. It then examines the theorem (due to Fricke) that Mod(S) acts properly discontinuously on Teich(S), with a finite-index subgroup of Mod(S) acting freely such that M(S) is finitely covered by a smooth aspherical manifold. The chapter also looks at Mumford's compactness criterion, which describes what it means to go to infinity in M(S), and concludes by showing that M(Sɡ) is very close to being a classifying space for Sɡ-bundles.

Azevedo, Bruno Campos de. O verdadeiro impacto das aceleradoras nas startups. Brazil Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31012/978-65-5861-432-6.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this work was to develop a study to obtain information on which characteristics influence the performance of a startup, including analyzing if companies that go through the acceleration process perform better than those that do not. As a research question, the idea was explored how to measure the performance of a company through cognitive aspects regarding the financial ratios of startups that went through the acceleration process or not, companies were investigated when they go through acceleration programs, are able to perform better when compared to companies in the same industry that did not enjoy the same initiatives, the proposal to create a performance indicator was also analyzed. Thus, a scenario was developed from which an analysis was conducted which, in turn, resulted in a Startup Performance Indicator (IDS), for purposes of comparison between companies that were accelerated and those that were not, because each Accelerator has a certain performance analysis criteria and keeps it secret about the core of your business. After the quantitative and qualitative analysis, the data collected in this research resulted in an indicative formula for the assessment of an index for Startups performance measurement to answer the research question. This work was carried out from 2014 to 2019 and was based on the scenario / ecosystem of startups and accelerators in Brazil, bringing a contextualization of the methods used by accelerators, within a global, national, regional and local context.
