Abstract:

From the point of view of the new science of globalism, the problems of the ecological, socio-economic state of the world and countries are considered through the prism of the interaction of the human psyche and society and the inhabited world. The criteria of ecological civilization of countries and peoples are justified. Optimizing the consumption of natural bio-and energy resources is becoming a fundamental environmental factor for sustainable development. The "Law of the maximum for humanity" as the law of the biosphere can be the arbitration court, the neutral force that will explain the historical need for mutual understanding, taking into account the interests of ecology and economy for the survival of man as a biovid on Earth; a new reality will begin to form — the phenomenon of co-residence of the world society with the biosphere. The world's population, its energy and bio-consumption, as well as all living matter on the planet, must correspond to the biological capacity of the Earth and not go beyond its boundaries. The task of the society is to implement a worldview breakthrough at the current stage of development, its own cultural mutation, which in the future will create the basis for adaptive technological and socio-cultural development. The task is to classify the entire Earth as a "Green Book" and to solve systemic environmental problems of a global nature. An integral part of sustainable development should be the principle of "vital consumption" at both the personal and social level, instead of the dominant principle of"expanded production and consumption". The indicator of the" culture of consumption "of natural resources, both at the individual level and at the level of society, should be included as an integral part of the integral indicator in the "True Indicator of Progress" and the "Human Development Index". The book is interdisciplinary in nature; it is a kind of scientific and philosophical poetic essay intended for teachers and students of universities in the field of sociology, ecology, biology and related fields, as well as for everyone who cares about the future of society.

Abstract:

The purpose of the monograph, which contains a modern view of the problem of adaptation of children with extremely low body weight, is to provide a wide range of doctors with basic information about the clinical picture, functional activity of innate and adaptive immunity, prognostic criteria of postnatal pathology, based on their own research. The specific features of the immunological reactivity of premature infants of various gestational ages who have developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and retinopathy of newborns (RN) from the moment of birth and after reaching postconceptional age (37-40 weeks) are described separately. The mechanisms of their implementation with the participation of factors of innate and adaptive immunity are considered in detail. Methods for early prediction of BPD and RN with the determination of an integral indicator and an algorithm for the management of premature infants with a high risk of postnatal complications at the stage of early rehabilitation are proposed. The information provided makes it possible to personify the treatment, preventive and rehabilitation measures in premature babies. The monograph is intended for obstetricians-gynecologists, neonatologists, pediatricians, allergists-immunologists, doctors of other specialties, residents, students of the system of continuing medical education. This work was done with financial support from the Ministry of Education and Science, grant of the President of the Russian Federation No. MK-1140.2020.7.

Large individual differences in the activity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) play a key role in risk for cardiovascular disease. This chapter presents an overview of the measurement strategies that can be used to study ANS activity in samples that are sufficiently large to allow genetic analyses. Heart rate variability, in particular, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is identified as the measure of choice to index parasympathetic activity, whereas preejection period (PEP) is the measure of choice to index sympathetic activity. Twin studies have demonstrated significant genetic contributions to resting levels of both RSA (heritability estimates range from 25 to 71 percent) and PEP (heritability estimates range from 48 to 74 percent) and the genetic variance in these traits seems to further increase under conditions of psychological stress. Identifying the genetic variants that influence parasympathetic and sympathetic activity may increase our understanding of the role of the ANS in cardiovascular disease.

Abstract:

The Index of Illustrations is an integral part of the definitive guide “Literary Heritage For 80 Years. A Guide to Volumes 1–103 yrs. 1931–2011”. There are nearly 12,000 illustrations in 103 volumes of “Literary Heritage”. The search for content spanned small and large museums, archives, and libraries in Russia, with many illustrations published for the first time ever. Other materials were sourced from public and private collections within the country and from abroad. The resulting illustrative content in “Literary Heritage” forms a massive, powerful visual projection of Russian authors, aspects of their family and everyday life, the spectrum of cultural and political professions, and portraits of actors in life and as performers on the stages of domestic and foreign theaters. The authors emphasized reproducing autographs including unpublished manuscripts, letters, and dedications on photographs and in books. Of great importance is the replication of printed materials — illustrations from the works of Russian authors as representative examples of typography. Finally, we should highlight many illustrations that give the viewer an idea about the environment of the authors, including memorials and monuments. The Index of Illustrations serves as a key to this iconic collection of materials, cataloging cutlines in order of their appearance in the volumes and respective location within each book. Cutlines are expanded on the illustrations’ theme — the subjects of the portraits, the groups gathered for specific purposes, the authors of the manuscripts, etc. They indicate the artist or photographer of the original illustration and its current location (museum, archive, etc.). In addition, a cross-reference of over 7,000 names accompanies the Index.

Abstract:

This chapter argues that we can read the Essais as an integral part and product of Michel de Montaigne’s life of political action. Investigating Montaigne’s appropriation and expansion of existing genres of Renaissance political prose, it shows that the form and content of the Essais shift with changes in Montaigne’s political career. The chapter charts Montaigne’s change of focus from the political activity of giving counsel to princes to the political activity of negotiating resolution of civil conflict. It argues that we can read the Essais as a work of political education, which is meant to inculcate in readers the values, skills, and capacities required for negotiating civil peace across volatile lines of disagreement.

Probiotics are live, non-pathogenic commensal microorganisms with beneficial effects on the host organism; they improve and/or maintain intestinal flora balance by suppressing and displacing harmful bacteria. Prebiotics are nondigestible food components that stimulate growth or activity of these beneficial intestinal bacteria. Such microorganisms form an integral part of the intestinal mucosal defence system and are important for the development and maturation of the infant#amp;#x2019;s gastrointestinal tract. Maternal ingestion of probiotics and prebiotics from dietary sources during pregnancy, or by the infant at weaning, may enhance the development and maturation of the neonatal gastrointestinal tract. Probiotic foods may also help control insulin resistance and the development of gestational diabetes.

Abstract:

Current thinking in medical ethics posits that treatment decisions should result from negotiation between clinician and patient as autonomous agents. However the view of science that underlies most thinking about evidence in medicine encourages the belief that in principle optimal evi-dence-based judgment as to best treatments can be reached by the clinician apart from such ne-gotiation, reducing negotiation to a sham process. A model-based notion of science, derived from a naturalistic philosophy of science, argues that the process of predicting optimal treatment re-quires consideration of a patient’s goals, and thus requires ongoing negotiations with the patient. Hence values are integral to the scientific process, not something extra-scientific that must be reconciled with it. From this perspective the clinician’s activity becomes one with scientific method rather than an ill-defined, and typically undervalued, art.

Abstract:

This article describes the history of the Jewish theatre, Jewish theatre studies, the history of the Israeli theatre from 1889 to 2001, and Israeli theatre studies. Although Jews were known as the People of the Book, and despite the very rich literature attached to Judaism, the dramatic genre never became an integral part of Jewish civilization, and theatre as an institution was never a part of its cultural life. This may be in part because the Bible and the book of oral law — the Talmud and later rabbinical writings — contain vehement exhortations against the theatre. In Judaism, jesters are identified with idleness and heresy. Meanwhile, the extent of performative activity in Israel is impressive for a country with no theatrical tradition and a population of merely 4.5 million Jewish and Hebrew-speaking inhabitants. Between 1970 and 1990, Israel held first place in the world in theatre attendance per capita.

Abstract:

Culture-Centered Music Therapy is a broad and developing orientation within the discipline and practice of music therapy that highlights how humans develop their capacities through participation in society, where culture operates as a resource for action. In other words, culture is seen as much more than an influence on human behavior; it is an integral element in human interaction and creativity. This chapter focuses on the difference between various notions of culture, and on the developments that have made culture-centered a contemporary force within music therapy thought. Three tenets of the orientation are presented here: (1) culture as a resource for self and society; (2) music as situated activity; and (3) music therapy as health musicking. Implications for practice, theory, and research are outlined along with a case example exploring aspects of how music therapy can create space for social-musical participation.

Although music-dance making would seem, intuitively, to be part of leisure studies, music and dance very seldom appear beyond the simple form of “activity” and rarely as music-dance making. Many Indigenous peoples conceptualize music-dance making as essential to life, knowledge, and taking care of the earth and cosmos. Seeking insight and wisdom from Indigenous practices and words, this chapter enacts maieutic listening to engage with Indigenous music-dance making that has sustained and nourished Indigenous Kanaka Maoli, Kanaka ‘Ōiwi, and Diné peoples for generations. The aim of the discussion is to gesture to social and political insights that can emerge through dialogue between Indigenous music-dance making and knowledge systems and Western leisure: a dialogue that unprivileges Western leisure. As Indigenous initiatives related to sovereignty, self-determination, and concern for the earth crisscross the world, the presence, power, and survivance of Indigenous music-dance making, as an integral component challenges, enriches, or changes how leisure is imagined and practiced.

Many people are suspicious of business, as well as of markets and commercial society. Are they right to be suspicious? Examples like Enron and Bernie Madoff do not help the impression many have of it as prone to dubious behavior and potentially disastrous negative consequences. But there are bad actors in all walks of life, not just in business. Is there something special about business that encourages, or even rewards, bad behavior? Can there be such a thing as honorable business? While there certainly is dishonorable business, there is indeed also such a thing as honorable business. Honorable business sees as its primary purpose to create value—for all parties. It looks for mutually voluntary and mutually beneficial transactions, so that both sides of any exchange are benefited, leading to increasing prosperity not just for one person or for one group at the expense of others but simultaneously for everyone involved. Done correctly, honorable business is thus a positive-sum activity that can enable flourishing for individuals and prosperity for society. This book offers a conception of what it means for an individual to flourish and what the public institutions are of which honorable business can form an integral part. It also offers original responses to several central objections raised to business, markets, and commercial society. It argues for a new framework for business ethics that articulates the role that the honorable businessperson, and honorable business, can, and must, play in a just and humane society.

Abstract:

This book provides the first detailed study of policing and civilian crime control in nineteenth-century England. It provides a sustained, empirically rich critique of existing accounts, which present the modern history of crime control as a process whereby the state wrested governmental power from the civilian public. According to the orthodox interpretation, the formation of new, ‘professional’ police forces in the nineteenth century is integral to the decline of an early modern, participatory, discretionary culture of self-policing, and its replacement by a modern, bureaucratic system of crime control. This book critically challenges the established view, and presents a fundamental reinterpretation of changes to crime control in the age of the new police. It breaks new ground by providing a highly detailed, empirical analysis of informal, civilian crime control—which reveals the tremendous activity which ordinary people displayed in responding to crime—alongside a rich survey of formal policing and criminal justice. With unique conceptual clarity, it seeks to reorient modern criminal justice history away from its established preoccupation with state systems of policing and punishment, and move towards a more nuanced analysis of the governance of crime. More widely, the book provides a valuable vantage point from which to rethink the role of civil society and the state in modern governance, the nature of agency and authority in Victorian England, and the historical antecedents of the pluralized modes of crime control which characterize contemporary society.

Music has been a vital part of leisure activity across time and cultures. Contemporary commodification, commercialization, and consumerism, however, have created a chasm between conceptualizations of music making and numerous realities in our world. From a broad range of perspectives and approaches, this handbook explores avocational involvement with music (i.e., amateur, recreation) as an integral part of the human condition. The chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Music Making and Leisure present a myriad of ways for reconsidering—refocusing attention on—the rich, exciting, and emotionally charged ways in which people of all ages make time for making music through music learning and participation. The contexts discussed are broadly Western, including a diversity of voices from scholars across fields and disciplines, framing complex and multifaceted phenomena that may be helpfully, enlighteningly, and perhaps provocatively framed as music making and leisure. The book is structured in four parts: (I) Relationships to and with Music; (II) Involvement and Meaning; (III) Scenes, Spaces, and Places; and (IV) On the Diversity of Music Making and Leisure. This volume may be viewed as an attempt to reclaim music making and leisure as a serious concern for, among others, policy makers, scholars, and educators, who perhaps risk eliding some or even most of the ways in which music, so central to community and belonging, is integrated into the everyday lives of people. As such, this handbook looks beyond the obvious (of course music making is leisure!), asking readers to consider anew, “What might we see when we think of music making as leisure?”

This book demonstrates how cheetahs are adapted to arid savannahs like the southern Kalahari, and makes comparisons with other areas, especially the Serengeti. Topics dealt with are: demography and genetic status; feeding ecology, i.e. methods used for studying diet, diets of different demographic groups, individual diet specializations of females, prey selection, the impact of cheetah predation on prey populations, activity regimes and distances travelled per day, hunting behaviour, foraging success and energetics; interspecific competition; spatial ecology; reproductive success and the mating system; and conservation. The major findings show that cheetahs are well adapted to arid ecosystems and are water independent. Cheetah density in the study area was stable at 0.7/100 km2 and the population was genetically diverse. Important prey were steenbok and springbok for females with cubs, gemsbok, and adult ostrich for coalition males, and steenbok, springhares, and hares for single animals. Cheetahs had a density-dependent regulatory effect on steenbok and springbok populations. Females with large cubs had the highest overall food intake. Cheetahs, especially males, were often active at night, and competition with other large carnivores, both by exploitation and interference, was slight. Although predation on small cubs was severe, cub survival to adolescence was six times higher than in the Serengeti. There was no difference in reproductive success between single and coalition males. The conservation priority for cheetahs should be to maintain protected areas over a spectrum of landscapes to allow ecological processes, of which the cheetah is an integral part, to proceed unhindered.

Abstract:

Radiation considerations are an integral part of the practice of nuclear cardiac imaging. Concern regarding radiation has increased in recent years, reflected in statements by many professional societies, and likely attributable both to rapid growth in use of nuclear cardiology as well as high doses received by some nuclear cardiology patients. The fundamental principles of medical radiological protection are justification (ensuring that the right test is performed for the right patient at the right time), optimization (ensuring that the test is performed in the right manner), and dose limitation, which while applicable to healthcare workers is not operative regarding patients. Three "As" facilitate and serve as an organizing principle for justification: awareness, appropriateness, and audit. Awareness incorporates knowledge of the benefits and risks of testing involving radiation and effective communication of these to the patient. Appropriateness in nuclear cardiology can be assessed using the American College of Cardiology's appropriateness criteria. Methods that have been demonstrated to improve appropriateness include using a collaborative learning model, a point-of-order decision support tool, and a multifaceted intervention including threatened loss of insurance coverage. A variety of strategies should be considered for optimization to ensure patient-centered imaging. These including strategic selection of both the protocol, e.g. selecting a stress-first protocol and performing stress-only imaging in patients without a high pre-test probability of abnormal findings on stress imaging, or using PET, and also the administered activity, e.g. by using weight-based dosing and/or software- or hardware-based advances in camera technology. Special considerations are required for pregnant, nursing, and pediatric patients.

Surveying American ballet in 1913, Willa Cather reported that few girls expressed any interest in taking ballet class and that those who did were hard-pressed to find anything other than dingy studios and imperious teachers. A century later, ballet is everywhere. There are ballet companies across the United States; ballet is commonly featured in film, television, literature, and social media; professional ballet dancers are spokespeople for all kinds of products; nail polish companies market colors like “Ballet Slippers”; and, most importantly, millions of American children have taken ballet class. Abstract:

Sedatives, hypnotics, and anxiolytics are CNS depressants with GABAergic activity that are potentially habit-forming due to their activity in brain reward pathways. They are central in the drug overdose epidemic with benzodiazepines (BZD) being involved in approximately 31% of all fatal overdoses. There are 4 withdrawal syndromes: High dose minor and major withdrawal, low dose withdrawal, and protracted withdrawal. Benzodiazepines are chemically related positive allosteric modulators of the GABA at the GABA-A receptor. In differential expression 5 different receptor subunits play a role in acute and prolonged withdrawal syndromes. Benzodiazepines have supplanted barbiturates for treatment of anxiety and insomnia due to their wider therapeutic index. Barbiturates can be helpful managing opiate and benazodiazapeine withdrawal. Traditional Chinese Medicine can improve hypnotics-dependent insomnia. Mindfulness-based relapse prevention and yoga may offer benefits but are poorly studied.
