Abstract:
Online Social Media (OSM) have been substantially transforming the process of spreading news, improving its speed, and reducing barriers toward reaching out to a broad audience. However, OSM are very limited in providing mechanisms to check the credibility of news propagated through their structure. The majority of studies on automatic fake news detection are restricted to English documents, with few works evaluating other languages, and none comparing language-independent characteristics. Moreover, the spreading of deceptive news tends to be a worldwide problem; therefore, this work evaluates textual features that are not tied to a specific language when describing textual data for detecting news. Corpora of news written in American English, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish were explored to study complexity, stylometric, and psychological text features. The extracted features support the detection of fake, legitimate, and satirical news. We compared four machine learning algorithms (k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB)) to induce the detection model. Results show our proposed language-independent features are successful in describing fake, satirical, and legitimate news across three different languages, with an average detection accuracy of 85.3% with RF.

Abstract:
In this paper, the authors investigate the topic-independent Chinese sentiment identification problem from online news. They analyze the word usage and sentence structure of the documents for inferring representative terms and sentences in the documents, and then employ the feature values of each document for identifying the opinion of the topic-independent online news. The support vector machine (SVM) is leveraged for training the classified model in terms of the extracted features and identifying the opinion orientation of the topic-independent documents by the trained model. Experimental results demonstrated that the authors' features are helpful for identifying the opinions of the topic-independent documents, and can help readers for filtering out the negative documents.

Independently owned news websites are an emerging but understudied part of the changing news business. This study applied resource-based theory to an analysis of the longevity of these mostly small-scale entrepreneurial ventures. The results show that as an aggregate sample, the sites do not fit the theory’s expectations. Disaggregating the sample by the sites’ basic business model uncovered clear differences between for-profits and nonprofits in the effect of resources on their longevity. The sharpest difference was for “product reputation,” which had inverse effects between the two groups.

The narrative of news should relay in some important elements such as accuracy, the right attribution, equilibration and verification. All of these elements are main components of Ethical Media Code of Albania. This code is at the same time the professional guide of journalists. Hence, the research question of this paper is; does the printed press reflect the electoral campaign based on the responsibilities it has in order to inform the audience? Does the printed press transmit accurate, balanced and verifiable news? Today with the development of technology, the number of people who can release news has increased. Everybody without the urgent need of being journalist has the opportunity to public information that generally is considerate as news. Therefore, such a development as far as having positive influence can have its negative effect. The open internet space for everyone increases the number of events that become news without any verification standard that is required in the Ethical Code. During these circumstances, to analyze the role of professional journalist becomes more important. A professional journalist should always be well informed and aware that his job is totally related with ethical components of writing news such as: verification, accuracy and balance. Abstract:
It is claimed that journalism is facing a far-reaching crisis, with mainstream news becoming ever less independent and informative, and therefore less trusted by publics. In response to this journalistic crisis, what has been termed the “fifth estate” – news satire – has flourished globally in recent years. A fertile area of scholarship has sprung up around it, arguing that it plays an important role in contemporary democracy. This article aims to contribute to these debates around the social functions of both news and news satire by bringing questions of memory and forgetting to these discussions. Firstly, it argues that, linked to acceleration under capitalism, news is a key site of the production of amnesia, and that this media amnesia has ideological outcomes. Secondly, it shows how television news satires both critique and attempt to make sense of the news, and to some extent counter the amnesiac tendencies of news by giving it a memory. In doing this, to some extent news satires thus resist the ideolog-ical work performed by news-forgetting along multiple dimensions. The article explores five memory practices in two news satires: The Daily Show (US) and Newswipe (UK).

Abstract:
Abstract Exploiting a unique identification strategy based on inaccurate news analytics, we document an effect of news analytics on the market independent of the informational content of the news. We show that news analytics speed up the stock price and trading volume response to articles, but reduce liquidity. Inaccurate news analytics lead to small price distortions that are corrected quickly. The market impact of news analytics is greatest for press releases, as news analytics exhibit a particular skill in “seeing through” the positive spin of press releases. Furthermore, we provide evidence that high-frequency traders rely on the information from news analytics for directional trading on company-specific news. Abstract:
The article traces the origins, rationale and some of the dilemmas that have emerged in the practice of ‘embedded’ journalism. It argues that the practice emerged as a post-Vietnam response by the US military to the ‘problem’ of independent news coverage of conflicts in which the US was involved. For the post-Vietnam US military, independent news coverage was problematic because it often contradicts the official war narrative and, if left unhindered, undermines public support for the war effort. Since public support is crucial for success in a foreign war, particularly during lengthy engagements, independent news coverage is seen as a threat to the unity of the home front and therefore a threat to the war effort itself. The lesson learned from Vietnam was to restrict independent media access to battle zones, first by denying all access and withdrawing security guarantees to journalists operating in conflict theaters, and then by providing privileged but controlled access to front line units via the practice of facilitated news-gathering known as ‘embedded journalism’. As it turns out, even that practice has a downside, and there is more to the story than the military desire to control the narrative.

Abstract:
Media plays an important role in illustrating the issue of interpersonal violence. Online media such as news portals and social media platforms are highly used in spreading the information virtually and digitally. However, the issue of interpersonal violence is still growing and has recently shown a significant spike. There are not many studies analyzing the exchange of information between these platforms digitally due to online news portals, which are operated by traditional media, and social media being treated as different entities. Yet, real-time posting may lead to an exchange of contents as they follow each other's agenda. A study on intermedia agenda-setting (IAS) - through issues published, agenda-setter, and sentiment - will enable us to understand how agenda setting plays a role in illustrating the issue of interpersonal violence. A content analysis study was conducted on six selected online media, consisting of mainstream and independent news portals and social media. A total of 815 samples of online news, articles and social media postings from five distinct issues were extracted to investigate the content and every 40 relevant comments from each news item were selected to identify how public opinion the portrayal of the issue in these selected online media. In-depth interview was conducted to eight field experts to gain clarification of the result from the content analysis study. Chi-square analysis on three hypotheses were significantly associated. Results revealed that public officials played a major role as the agenda setter. The Star which represents mainstream online news led in setting the agenda on interpersonal violence issues while Facebook which represents social media followed next in setting the agenda. During the process of intermedia agenda-setting, negative sentiments were hugely expressed and exchanged which indicated the uneasiness, feeling disturbed and dissatisfaction on the interpersonal violence cases, which in the end resulted in the sharing and exchanging of news between mainstream news portals and social media. The agenda on social media was set by the public. This confirmed the effects of the flow of elite--non-elite-elite on IAS. Hence, this study contributed to the understanding of the agenda pattern used that also coexisted in different types of media which were created through the intermedia process. Keywords: Intermedia agenda setting, interpersonal violence, mainstream online news, independent news portal, social media.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTRecent work suggests the importance of integrating prosodic research with research on the sequential organization of ordinary conversation. This paper examines how interactants use prosody as a resource in the joint accomplishment of delivered news as good or bad. Analysis of approximately 100 naturally occurring conversational news deliveries reveals that both good and bad news are presented and received with characteristic prosodic features that are consistent with expression of joy and sorrow, respectively, as described in the existing literature on prosody. These prosodic features are systematically deployed in each of the four turns of the prototypical news delivery sequence. Proposals and ratifications of the valence of a delivery are often made prosodically in the initial turns of the prototypical four-turn news delivery, while lexical assessments of news are often made later. When prosody is used to propose the valence of an item of news, subsequent lexical assessments tend to be alignments with these earlier ascriptions of valence, rather than independent appraisals of the news. This study focuses on the emerging discourse surrounded female convicts. The study aims to discover the reality concerning context, production, text consumption, and social-cultural aspects influencing the discourse production within the text. This qualitative-descriptive study analyzed data from fifteen caning execution news, in-depth interviews with seven journalists, two editors, and one member of the Alliance of Independent Journalist Banda Aceh chapter (Aliansi Jurnalis Independen/AJI Banda Aceh). This study utilized Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis as the data analysis method. The findings revealed that the female convicts dominated news about caning, especially in khalwat and ikhtilat cases. Female convicts were represented as figures who violated social and moral norms, gender stereotypes, and expectations of femininity. This discourse benefited news organizations economically and also promoted discrimination against female convicts.

Abstract:
Sinhala is a low-resource language, for which basic language and linguistic tools have not been properly defined. This affects the development of NLP-based end-user applications for Sinhala. Thus, when implementing NLP tools such as sentiment analyzers, we have to rely only on language-independent techniques. This article presents the use of such language-independent techniques in implementing a sentiment analysis system for Sinhala news comments. We demonstrate that for low-resource languages such as Sinhala, the use of recently introduced word embedding models as semantic features can compensate for the lack of well-developed language-specific linguistic or language resources, and text classification with acceptable accuracy is indeed possible using both traditional statistical classifiers and Deep Learning models. The developed classification models, a corpus of 8.9 million tokens extracted from Sinhala news articles and user comments, and Sinhala Word2Vec and fastText word embedding models are now available for public use; 9,048 news comments annotated with POSITIVE/NEGATIVE/NEUTRAL polarities have also been released.

Abstract:
Anti-Americanism is a growing tendency among people in Turkey, and the media is one source of this negative sentiment. After the failed military coup attempt in Turkey on 15 July 2016, more than 150 domestic media outlets were shut down, including television channels, daily newspapers, radio stations, news websites, and even social media. Local affiliates of international media companies such as Deutsche Welle Turkish, however, have remained immune to such government interventions to some extent. Considering the difference in the level of independence from Turkish government influence, this study aims to explore how the anti-American sentiment in the news varied across different media outlets. With the content of 690 online news reports, a sentiment analysis compared the pro-government Sabah and Yeni Şafak daily newspapers with two internationally owned and more independent media outlets, BBC News Turkish and Deutsche Welle. The results showed a significant discrepancy between the two groups in terms of how they framed news related to the United States. The domestic media framed and reported the US-related news with a more negative slant, including the use of offensive and pejorative narratives about the United States and its politics. BBC Turkish and Deutsche Welle, however, reported news about the United States with a relatively more neutral and objective language.

Abstract:
Generation Z is a digital native who was born together with and fluently using the internet. Research shows that most Generation Z gathering news from social medias. However, how much Generation Z trust the online news they read on official Instagram accounts has never been investigated before. The purpose of this study is determining the level of trust Generation Z giving in online news distributed through official Instagram accounts in the form of infographic and short news. The dependent variable is level of trust in online news and the independent variable is level of reading online news on official Instagram accounts. The independent variable is accounted by six indicators derived from attribution theory. This quantitative research focuses on Generation Z in Semarang City, Indonesia, especially undergraduate students at Diponegoro University with total 107 respondents. This research was conducted during the political campaign periods in Indonesia from February to April 2019 using questionnaires for simple random data sampling. Collected data was then analyzed with multiple regressions using SPSS. The results showed that the level of reading infographic news influenced 36,4% level of trust in online news; while it showed only 28,0% for the short news. However, despite the differences in the effect of reading levels on trust levels, the two groups of respondents showed the similar final level of trust in online news. Generation Z neither trusts online news in the form of infographics nor short news. They don't trust online news on Instagram regardless the form of the news.

Abstract:
Background and Purpose. Neuroendocrine neoplasms occurring in the liver are very rare, in which metastatic hepatic neuroendocrine neoplasms [(MH)-NENs] secondary to gastroenteropancreatic NENs [(GEP)-NENs] account for their majority. The clinical features and long-term survival of (MH)-NENs secondary to (GEP)-NENs were not clear, especially for each grading group of G1 neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), G2 NETs, and G3 NETs and G3 neuroendocrine carcinomas (G3 NECs). Method. Data of patients who were surgically treated and clinicopathologically diagnosed as (MH)-NENs secondary to (GEP)-NENs at West China Hospital of Sichuan University from January 2006 to December 2018 were retrospectively collected and analyzed by the grading classification for (GEP)-NENs. Results. We identified 150 patients with (MH)-NENs secondary to (GEP)-NENs, including 10 patients with G1 NETs, 26 with G2 NETs, 33 with G3 NETs, and 81 with G3 NECs. There were significant differences between patients with G1/G2/G3 NETs and those with G3 NECs, such as age at diagnosis (P=0.041), synchronous liver lesion (P=0.032), incidental diagnosis (P=0.014), tumor largest diameter (P=0.047), vascular invasion (P=0.017), and extrahepatic metastatic disease (P=0.029). The estimated 3-year overall survival for patients with G1 NETs, G2 NETs, G3 NETs, and G3 NECs was 100%, 79.4%, 49.5%, and 20.7%, respectively (P<0.001). The survival of G1 NETs or G2 NETs was significantly better than that of G3 NETs (P=0.013, P=0.037, respectively) and G3 NECs (P=0.001, P<0.001; respectively). Patients with G3 NECs present notably worse survival than those with G3 NETs (P=0.012), while survival comparison between G1 NETs and G2 NETs was not statistically different (P=0.131). The grading classification for (GEP)-NENs was an effective independent predictor of survival for (MH)-NENs secondary to (GEP)-NENs (hazard ratio: 4.234; 95% confidence intervals: 1.984–6.763; P=0.003). Conclusion. Our demonstration revealed that the grading classification for (GEP)-NENs could well stratify (MH)-NENs secondary to (GEP)-NENs into prognostic groups and supported its wide use in clinical practice.

These issues are instrumental in that stakeholders that includes shareholders, analysts, regulators, activists, labor unions, employees, community organizations, and the news media are requesting that firms be accountable not only for their own performance but for the performance of their entire supply chain, and for an ever-changing set of ethical issues. We present a Throughput Model that depicts independent auditors’ reporting to firms’ board of directors may improve its market valuation against the backdrop of an ever more complex global economy with continuing economic, social and environmental inequities

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to analyse attitudes towards news on old and new platforms. Our study used two types of independent variable: generation, which – along with age – is one of the most important factors explaining news media practices; and news consumption, which is strongly related to attitudes. We utilised a national mail survey of 3000 people in the Swedish population (aged 16–85) to conduct the study. The response rate in the 2010 study was a little over 60 per cent, and the survey gives a significant picture of news attitudes in the population. The findings generally show a strong degree of support for traditional news media such as television and printed newspapers. However, this support is far stronger among the older generations than the younger – who, to a larger extent, express support for other forms of news distribution, in particular the internet and social media networks.

This study sought to determine whether top editors at chain-owned and large newspapers would have more autonomy and freedom to improve editorial content than top editors at independent and small newspapers. The theoretical rationale is that role specialization promotes increased emphasis on news and editorials and, at the same time, removes the influence of publishers and owners from the news production process. The study found that differences between chain and independent ownership were not significant, but that top editors at larger newspapers did have more autonomy.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the news business in Africa during decolonization. While UNESCO stimulated enormous discussion about creating independent ‘third world’ alternatives for news exchange, African countries such as Kenya and Tanzania sought to secure informational sovereignty by placing international news agencies within their control. Reuters and other international news agencies, in turn, adapted to decolonization by reinventing themselves as companies working to assist new nation-states. In the subsequent contest over news distribution, the Cold War, and inter-agency competition, Africa became a battleground for disputes between Reuters’ capitalist vision of news as a commercial product and UNESCO's political conception of news. Ironically, decolonization enabled Reuters to gain greater control over information supply across Africa, because African leaders viewed the capitalist model of news as better suited to their diplomatic goals and political views.

Abstract:
The Syrian uprising in 2011 was accompanied by the birth of a new generation of media outlets seeking to offer alternative narratives to those of the regime. After the Kurds gained a certain level of autonomy from the Syrian regime and opposition forces, areas historically inhabited by Kurds (Rojava) have also seen the emergence of local media: for example, the television station Ronahi, magazines and newspapers such as Welat, Buyer and Shar, radio stations such as Arta FM and Welat and the ARA News agency. Indeed, for the first time in their history, Syrian Kurds have the opportunity to have an independent voice in the media landscape. In this paper we map the field of emerging Kurdish media in Syria and analyze some of the main features of these outlets, while situating them in the larger context of emerging Syrian media. Moreover, the paper explores their relationship in the current political context of the Syrian uprising and, especially, of Rojava. In doing so, we analyze the political identity that these media tend to project and address how they position themselves toward the issue of the Kurdish identity in general and in Syria in particular.

The investigated sample are press releases on peer-reviewed health research and the associated research articles and news stories. Our sample consisted of 462 press releases and 668 news articles from the UK (2011) and 129 press releases and 185 news articles from The Netherlands (2015). We hand-coded all journal articles, press releases and news articles for correlational claims, using a well-tested codebook. The main outcome measures are types of sources that were quoted and exaggeration of correlational claims. We used counts, 2x2 tables and odds ratios to assess the relationship between presence of quotes and exaggeration of the causal claim.ResultsOverall, 99.1% of the UK press releases and 84.5% of the Dutch press releases contain at least one quote. For the associated news articles these percentages are: 88.6% in the UK and 69.7% in the Netherlands. Authors of the study are most often quoted and only 7.5% of UK and 7.0% of Dutch news articles contained a new quote by an expert source, i.e. one not provided by the press release. The relative odds that an article without an external expert quote contains an exaggeration of causality is 2.6.ConclusionsThe number of articles containing a quote from an independent expert is low, but articles that cite an external expert do contain less exaggeration.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to the study of the functional features of the media space in Kazakhstan under the rapidly changing globalization trends and information confrontation of world powers. Since gaining independence, Kazakhstan is striving to create its own independent information space. The process of information space formation in the country has several traits, such as low competitiveness of national news agencies, slow development of the regulatory and legal framework in the field of information security, high politicization, including the language issue. These features occurred due to the heterogeneous language environment, the problems of the formation of national independent news agencies, the challenges of globalization, the most pressing of which is the growing influence of global media. In this article, authors touch upon the transition of Kazakhstan to the Latin alphabet, as well as the views of Western, Russian and Kazakhstan researchers on the current state of the media landscape of Kazakhstan. Authors justify the need to work out ways to minimize external information impact on the media landscape of Kazakhstan that is still undergoing media transformation processes.

Abstract:
Research suggests that Facebook’s reputation as a news source is in decline. One reason for this development might be found in how users perceive their own exposure to alleged ‘fake news’ - a phenomenon which has been strongly linked to Facebook in public debate. Using a quota survey of German Internet users (n = 743) we investigate how users’ self-perceived exposure to ‘fake news’ and the ‘fake news’ debate are related to their evaluation and verification of political information on Facebook. Results indicate that the evaluation of Facebook as a news source is independent of users’ perceptions of their total amount of exposure to ‘fake news’ or the ‘fake news’ debate. However, individuals who feel they encounter many ‘fake news’ from traditional news sources evaluate Facebook more positively. Contrary to that, those who believe that the ‘fake news’ they are exposed to originate in alternative sources evaluate Facebook less positively and also engage in verification behaviors more frequently. Moreover, verification is predicted by the overall level of perceived ‘fake news’ exposure and, most strongly, by exposure to the ‘fake news’ debate. Findings are discussed in light of recent research on news audience polarization.
