Abstract:
In SharePoint 2013, Microsoft added a social networking function in the personal sites (My Site) of a user. In this version, a personal news feed has been added which shows events regarding subjects the user follows, such as document changes, user updates, tagged posts, and site activities. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate whether or not it is possible to extend the news feed function by adding an independent component as part of My Site, to allow users to follow corporate news by choosing their categories of interests. A prototype of the component was implemented and it met most of the objectives stated in the thesis. It is added to the default page of the user’s My Site as a web part and it is able to retrieve and display news that matches the user’s subscription. Although the web part still needs improvements in both functionality and design, it still confirms that it is possible to extend the current My Site news feed with such a component. Since the students working on this thesis had no prior knowledge of SharePoint or .NET development, the project brought new challenges, as the students needed to learn how to work in a SharePoint environment and to learn to use Microsoft Visual Studio for .NET development.

Abstract:
The world of journalism is becoming increasingly dangerous, as figures published by international media organisations demonstrate. But the Western news media suggests, that particularly Western foreign correspondents are facing incredibly high risks and cases of abducted, tortured and murdered foreign correspondents are reported regularly. The question arises “Have they become targets?” Foreign correspondence has been a dangerous occupation since it first emerged during the Crimean War, when the first consistent war reporting was established. Ever since then, foreign correspondents have had to face opposition, criticism and harsh realities. However, they have also always been highly valued journalists and well-respected for their courage to travel overseas, often into conflict-riddled areas, to report important news to their audiences back home. Sometimes they have even lost their lives in the pursuit of truth. Daniel Pearl, Christian Struwe and Karen Fischer or Trent Keegan are just a few examples of the many correspondents and journalists who have died as martyrs for their profession. As the actual data published by international media organisations, such as Reporters Without Borders, the Committee to Protect Journalists or Freedom House, suggests, it has rapidly become worse for all journalists in the last 20 years and there is worse to come. It appears as if the factors leading to their deaths are increasing and will be contributing to even higher death tolls in the future. The thesis will consider such questions as: Who is there to protect journalists and foreign correspondents? Independent media organisations are trying their best. The international press is bemoaning the many deaths and governments have promulgated laws to protect their reporters, but does that actually help? Will those attempts make it better in future? And can the Western news media apparatus itself be held partly responsible for some of the deaths?

Myers, Linda Mary. "Women's independent travel experiences in New Zealand." Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2010. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/3308/.

Full text
Abstract:
An ever-increasing number of women worldwide are making the most of their independence and becoming increasingly motivated to travel more than ever before. Women are grasping the opportunity to be tourists in their own right; for their own pleasure and satisfaction, breaking away from their hybrid identities of, ‘the wife’, ‘mother’, ‘girlfriend’ or the ‘housewife’. Women of all ages are beginning to become empowered and to travel together in close female friendship groups, in two’s or alone. They are gaining confidence and are able to independently self-organise their trips. Educational opportunity and financial self sufficiency through improvement in earning capacities has greatly increased women’s access to a much wider range of leisure and travel choices. Personal life spans involve significant chronological transitions, such as from university to work, marriage to divorce, work to retirement where identity has to be renegotiated; new autobiographies reconstructed, and new trajectories have to be set. Often, it seems women are motivated to travel during such transitional circumstances. Despite the tendency to assume that male appeals are universal, research suggests that female and male perceptions and experiences of space differ substantially. In tourism, gender relationships have been examined from a number of perspectives; women as the employee's of the tourism industry; women as hosts in the tourism destination; and more recently women as tourists. Women are slowly being recognised as a market segment, facilities and different services in luxury hotels, women only tours and cruises are evolving to meet demand. The gendered perceptions and ideologies of New Zealand; being 100% pure nature and the adventure capital of the world which is open to all, ages, and abilities, attracts statistically more women backpacker travellers than men. A major objective of this thesis is to redress the bias in tourism research; to represent women including lesbian women in the tourism arena. In both cases giving women a ‘voice’ to represent their touristic experiences, desires and link these to the notion of identity construction through tourism. Little remains known on the wider variables and influences that motivate the travel choices of lesbian consumers in particular. It has been argued that female tourism experiences, like their leisure behaviours, are constrained by male dominated cultural values and attitudes at destinations and by social constraints and restrictions in their home society. However, on the other hand it has also been argued that some women’s tourism experiences - such as backpacking and independent travelling- can also be potentially liberating for some women as they gain the freedom to express their often hybrid identities in new ways. The focus in this study is towards the positive gains and benefits to the individual through travel experiences, but this cannot be done in isolation without considering some of the constraints and challenges. It is multidisciplinary in approach, grounded in theoretical frameworks offered by gender studies, tourism studies, social science, leisure studies, women’s studies, queer theory, cultural geography and sports studies. It is a qualitative study which sets out to explore tourism experiences and the personal growth and identity development through tourism experiences in New Zealand. Sixty in-depth interviews were held with international women travellers, backpackers and tourism providers in New Zealand. Adopting an interpretive paradigm with a limited feminist influenced, the important focus was to allow the women to speak of their experiences and lives in their own voices. In line with qualitative methodologies, it is the words and photographs of the women that form the data set for this study. It critically examines how a performative understanding of the playing out of gender can be linked to notions of serious leisure, the reflective production of biographies and accumulation of cultural capital. The results reveal that personal development, self identity and social identity can be influenced by travel experiences in varying degrees. Four interlinking categories of importance were identified; embodied experiences, psychological development, socio-spatial interactions and visual consumption. Each category evolved and was sometimes dependent upon age and sexuality. The results of this study show that there are real benefits to personal growth and identity development to women through their travel experiences. Through travel women make the time or find the time to self-reflect on their lives. They escape from the social constraints at home and can achieve a sense of freedom. Through the act of travelling itself and through participating in physical adventure activities travel can present a means of empowerment and a record of achievement. The confidence gained through travel experiences can enhance self-esteem and help construct a new dimension to their identities.

Encarnacao, John. "Punk aesthetics in independent "new folk", 1990-2008." Electronic version, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/981.

Full text
Abstract:
Various commentators on punk (e.g. Laing 1985, Frith 1986, Goshert 2000, Reynolds 2005, Webb 2007) have remarked upon an essence or attitude which is much more central to it than any aspects of musical style. Through the analysis of specific recordings as texts, this study aims to deliver on this idea by suggesting that there is an entire generation of musicians working in the independent sphere creating music that combines resonances of folk music with demonstrable punk aesthetics. Given that the cultural formations of folk and punk share many rhetorics of authenticity – inclusivity, community, anti-establishment ideals and, to paraphrase Bannister (2006: xxvi) ‘technological dystopianism’ – it is perhaps not surprising that some successors of punk and hardcore, particularly in the U.S., would turn to folk after the commercialisation of grunge in the early 1990s. But beyond this, a historical survey of the roots of new folk leads us to the conclusion that the desire for spontaneity rather than perfection, for recorded artefacts which affirm music as a participatory process rather than a product to be consumed, is at least as old as recording technology itself. The ‘new folk’ of the last two decades often mythologises a pre-industrial past, even as it draws upon comparatively recent oppositional approaches to the recording as artefact that range from those of Bob Dylan to obscure outsider artists and lo-fi indie rockers. This study offers a survey of new folk which is overdue – to date, new folk has been virtually ignored by the academic literature. It considers the tangled lineages that inform this indie genre, in the process suggesting new aspects of the history of rock music which stretch all the way back to Depression-era recordings in the shape of Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music. At the same time, it attempts to steer a middle course between cultural studies approaches to popular music which at times fail to directly address music at all, and musicological approaches which are at times in danger of abstracting minutae until the broader frame is completely lost. By concentrating on three aspects of the recordings in question - vocal approach, a broad consideration of sound (inclusive of production values and timbre), and structure as it pertains to both individual pieces and albums – this work hopes to offer a fresh way of reading popular music texts which deals specifically with the music without losing sight of its broader function and context.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
Following the breakdown of the Soviet Union, one of the world's strongest oil producing industries was divided into a few major oil provinces. The Russian energy industry has been adversely affected by this process. The process of change to the former Soviet oil industry including: Russian efforts to maintain control of its former resources, NIS resource development, Western capital investment, and environmental issues in the major oil provinces of the former Soviet Union, is the main focus of this thesis. Free market world oil majors and their counterparts, both in Russia and the New Independent States, have developed a number of significant alliances that have resulted in several potentially lucrative joint ventures. The coercive tactics that the Russian government resorts to in an effort to prevent its former republics from efficiently developing their reserves, and the position the United States must take to ensure these efforts are stifled will be addressed. A sound grasp of these critical energy issues by American policy makers will result in the development of these vast resources in a manner favorable to U. S. national interests. This will provide security for our strategic reserves and offer a viable alternative to the Persian Gulf resources far into the twenty-first century.

Abstract:

The Standard Model of elementary particles can not be the final theory. There are theoretical reasons to expect the appearance of new physics, possibly at the energy scale of few TeV. Several possible theories of new physics have been proposed, each with unknown probability to be confirmed. Instead of arbitrarily choosing to examine one of those theories, this thesis is about searching for any sign of new physics in a model-independent way. This search is performed at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The Standard Model prediction is implemented in all final states simultaneously, and an array of statistical probes is employed to search for significant discrepancies between data and prediction. The probes are sensitive to overall population discrepancies, shape disagreements in distributions of kinematic quantities of final particles, excesses of events of large total transverse momentum, and local excesses of data expected from resonances due to new massive particles. The result of this search, first in 1 fb-1 and then in 2 fb-1, is null, namely no considerable evidence of new physics was found.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 2003, Brazilian foreign policy recovered more clearly the pattern verified between 1930 and 1980. The State once again adopted a fundamental role in the development process, leading the economy towards the so called social development process. The goals of the country have changed and the universalism, already settled, supported the effort for the country to become a real protagonist in the main international issues. The innovation consists in the emphasis that the Lula Administration put in the social reform, both internal and external. The philosophical premise that bases the current administration is that there is a mutual relationship between those dimensions, and that the solution of the internal problems is conditioned to the strengthening of the Brazilian position in the international system. Considering that social justice is a ground to this administration, some elements have been identified that make it possible to compare President Lula’s foreign policy with the Independent Foreign Policy from the early sixties (Política Externa Independente – PEI). For this similarity, but also for didactical purposes, the current period is named New Independent Foreign Policy (Nova Política Externa Independente – Nova PEI). For this similarity, but also for didactical purposes, the current period is named New Independent Foreign Policy (Nova Política Externa Independente – Nova PEI). The strategy must be evaluated according to the main tactical lines adopted since 2003, and that correspond to PEI’s tactical lines: democracy and multilateralism, international trade, South-South cooperation and social justice. Democracy and Multilateralism are goals, determined by an instrument on which they depend to be fulfilled, South-South cooperation. As a synthesis, Social Justice is considered the philosophy that underlies “Nova PEI’s” discourse and action. It is a renovation process of the Brazilian role to make the country a protagonist in global matters. Having in mind the intention to ease the understanding of Nova PeI, it will be constructed a comparison to PEI, in which it finds its origins. But its originality derives from the combination of the tactical lines mentioned related to the configuration of the international system. After pointing the limits of both policies, the summary of the ideas gathered will risk to try and indicate the challenges the Brazilian foreign policy will face in the new century. Finally, it will be considered if it is possible a diplomacy for development in this century.

Abstract:
The central role of media in the Rwandan genocide of 1994 has led to restrictive precautions from the government. Restrictive legislation due to the genocide has for long limited media freedoms and been target for domestic and international critique. In light of the new media reform adopted in 2013 this essay seek to examine the experienced impact of the reform on the journalistic role as watchdog, setting the agenda, nation builder, agent of empowerment and government partner. The empirical material is based on qualitative interviews performed in Rwanda with journalists, bloggers, reform implementers and international collaborators. The analysis constitutes a discussion regarding to what extent the new reform seems to reinforce these roles. Here I will use my theoretical framework, namely Development Journalism, and the answers from the respondents in order to understand and examine this particular problem. The final part of the essay deals with my specific case, which is Rwanda’s media landscape after the newly adopted media reform. Here I will analyze the experienced change introduced by the new media reform. My essay finds that an official narrative, which is enforced by the Rwandan constitution, restricts the impact of the reform on the role of media

The occupation of independent auditor has come to be questioned as to its role to be played in the face of society up against to crises and financial scandals worldwide. However, it is remarkable that the demands from society can be excessive or be beyond the expected for this professional, causing differences in expectations between what is expected an what actually the auditor offers. These inequalities arise from the interpretation of the auditor s report and its users, and what happens with the audited companies. Nowadays, in Brazil, the report presents standards paragraphs, regardless of customer and/or audited industry, including the final opinion, that can be modified or not. Also, it is used an elaborate language and almost incomprehensible to people outside the area, according academic researches as well as those carried out by the IAASB. The auditor presents and represents an important and key role in the capital market, prepossessing the sense of audit value, and the users of Financial Statements have demanded more information from this professional, in order to have, in fact, the foundation underlying its conclusions, in addition to recognize the risks to which certain audited Company is subject. Given this requirement, after several researches, debates, interviews and discussions, it was noticed that the independent auditor s report needs to change in the form of communication, to afford a better transparency, mainly answering the wishes of the users. Auditing standards have been revised and the new report has been implemented in some countries, such as the UK and Netherlands, pioneers regarding new assignments of this professional. In Brazil, the new report will be effective from 2016. Given these implications, the qualitative research looked after, through literature basis and document analysis, to verify whether, facing this new form of communication, it is possible to assist the delimitation of tasks of independent auditor, reinforcing his image, unsettled by accounting fraud, assigned primarily such as the responsibility of this professional. From there, it was necessary to analyze if the key questions of the rules of major jurisdictions can assist in defining the auditor's responsibility, as well as assessments of the two audited company reports from the UK and the Netherlands and, from that, as a general consideration, it is clear that the change in the communication of the independent auditor is a big step and shows that auditors started to pay attention to the claims of the users of Financial Statements

Abstract:
Very little is known about the small firms sector and the new firm formation process in the Welsh economy. This study attempts to bridge this gap in Knowledge and adds to the growing body of information on new firm formation and development in the U.K. and its regions. The approach adopts a largely microeconomic perspective within a business policy strategy. Data is obtained from interviews with the founders of some 61 new independent firms in South Wales. Further information is derived from interviews with representatives of the major banks and support agencies in the Principality. The study, therefore, provides data which allows a comprehensive comparison with studies of other areas and an assessment of the new firm formation process in Wales. Information is provided on both the initial start-up and the development of new and independent firms. This study also makes a contribution to knowledge in several other areas:- 1. It outlines a method to estimate the importance of new firms in employment generation in Wales. This method could usefully be extended to other regions and indeed to the U.K. as a whole. 2. It provides statistics on the size distribution of firms in the private manufacturing sector of Industrial South Wales which can also be classified according to ownership status. A potentially important factor in the new firm formation process. 3. It shows that existing theories of price determination are largely inadequate at describing methods of new firm pricing. Data are presented on the pricing practices of firms when they first enter a market and a representative model of pricing methods in new firms is suggested. 4. It attempts to relate various microeconomic concepts to the very specialised situation found in new firms, both at the time of start-up and during the infant stage of business development. Barriers to entry, scale and location decisions and limits to firm growth are considered in this context.

Abstract:
This thesis investigated changes in employment opportunities for part-time teachers in Western Australia as a result of the Independent Public School (IPS) initiative. The study was premised on the understanding that the Independent Public Schools initiative is based on the core tenets of New Public Management. A telephone survey collected a convenient sample of ten principals’ perceptions about part-time teaching staff, with a specific focus on commitment. An analysis of the responses identified tensions between principals’ values, the characteristics of the Independent Public School initiative and equal opportunity policies. Principals placed high value on team work, and perceived part-time teachers as less committed to teaching than their full-time colleagues. These may create tensions through increased workplace competition invoked through the Independent Public Schools initiative and the limited availability of part-time teachers. This thesis also identified concerns surrounding the labelling of schools as IPS or non-IPS. It concludes by identifying that the working conditions for part-time staff may experience negative changes in employment equity as a result of the Independent Public Schools initiative. The thesis acknowledges that IPS is here to stay and that the policy challenges lie in identifying, avoiding and ameliorating any inequities the IPS initiative may create.

Abstract:
On the 50th anniversary of the creation of the first medicines information center, the core of this PhD Thesis offers an insider perspective and provides several examples of independent drug information, with a focus on new drugs. On the one hand, it provides an overview of the origins and challenges current medicines information centers within public healthcare organizations are experiencing. Several strategic lines aiming for information centers continue to meet drug information needs in the actual healthcare and economic context are presented. Additionally, various examples of independent drug information as a tool for medicines management are as well provided. First, the evaluation of the place in therapy of methylnaltrexone, the first peripherally acting mu-opioid receptor antagonist, licensed for opioid-induced constipation in patients with advanced illness. Second, the role of three novel opioid antagonists (methylnaltrexone, alvimopan and modified release naloxone) and four other agents (NKTR-118, TD-1211, ADL-7445 and ADL-5945), which are currently under different stages of clinical development, in the management of opioid-induced bowel dysfunction is discussed. The annexes compile two editorials, one on new drugs’ policies and a second on how should the pharmaceutical benefit scheme be reviewed in order to maximize its economic impact without compromising healthcare quality. For illustrative purposes, several drug information bulletins are enclosed, reviewing the place in therapy of other newly marketed drugs.

Abstract:
The thesis explores the nature and characteristics of the independent regulatory agencies, which become a crucial component of the current administrative structures,as well as the possible sources and dynamics behind their emergence. The study begins with investigating in what way the methodological premises of the theories of public choice, new public management, and governance affected the formation, functioning and justification of these agencies and makes an inquiry into the connection between them and the neo-liberal policies implemented since the 1980s.It then focuses on the independent regulatory agencies in the Turkish case and examines the impact of the economic and political conditions in the neo-liberal period in the emergence of these agencies. The thesis seeks to explain the peculiarity of the emergence of IRAs in Turkey, as compared to their American and European counterparts, with special reference to the process of European Integration and to the pressures exerted by the international financial agencies within the context of economic crisis. As geared to the achievement of these objectives, a critical assessment of the debates on independent regulatory agencies in the literature has been made within the scope of the study.

Abstract:
We address the problem of model-independent searches for New Physics (NP), at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using the ATLAS detector. Particular attention is paid to the development and testing of novel Machine Learning techniques for that purpose. The present work presents three main results. Firstly, we put in place a system for automatic generic signature monitoring within TADA, a software tool from ATLAS. We explored over 30 signatures in the data taking period of 2017 and no particular discrepancy was observed with respect to the Standard Model processes simulations. Secondly, we propose a collective anomaly detection method for model-independent searches for NP at the LHC. We propose the parametric approach that uses a semi-supervised learning algorithm. This approach uses penalized likelihood and is able to simultaneously perform appropriate variable selection and detect possible collective anomalous behavior in data with respect to a given background sample. Thirdly, we present preliminary studies on modeling background and detecting generic signals in invariant mass spectra using Gaussian processes (GPs) with no mean prior information. Two methods were tested in two datasets: a two-step procedure in a dataset taken from Standard Model simulations used for ATLAS General Search, in the channel containing two jets in the final state, and a three-step procedure from a simulated dataset for signal (Z′) and background (Standard Model) in the search for resonances in the top pair invariant mass spectrum case. Our study is a first step towards a method that takes advantage of GPs as a modeling tool that can be applied to several signatures in a more model independent setup

Abstract:
This thesis examines New Zealand's role in and contribution to the British Commonwealth in the crucial years immediately following the Second World War. A thematic approach is taken, highlighting economic, constitutional and defence ties, as well as the less discernable links of sentiment. The premise is that the Commonwealth was essentially a paradoxical association; the juncture between independent nationhood and collective solidarity. The thesis, therefore, aims to show how New Zealand exhibited both these traits and tried to maintain some equilibrium between them. However, the latter role of the loyal Commonwealth partner increasingly prevailed in the difficult international situation of the late 1940's. Certainly, by the defeat of the first Labour government in 1949, New Zealand had strongly reaffirmed its commitment to Commonwealth unity. Confirmed sovereignty was qualified by a residual imperial focus. The various influences contributing to New Zealand's inherent support for the Commonwealth will be considered. New Zealand's commitment to the Commonwealth has to, however, be seen in the context of a changing international environment. The established independence of member states, combined with Britain's decline as a major power, ensured that the Commonwealth could not function as a unitary bloc. A bi-polar balance of power, centred on the United States and the Soviet Union was to become the predominant feature of the post-war world, and Commonwealth members had to respond accordingly. In turn, the Commonwealth itself was an elastic association and continued to evolve relative to changing circumstances, as highlighted by the impact of the independence of the Indian subcontinent. This gave greater emphasis to the Commonwealth's basis as a free association of independent nations rather than a formalised alliance. The New Zealand government's conservative, even reactionary, attitude to such developments will be discussed, showing Wellington's role as the advocate of the "Old Commonwealth". The External Affairs files of the National Archives, Wellington, provided the bulk of primary research. This was supplemented by parliamentary records, newspapers and the excellent published collections of primary sources. The extensive corpus of secondary literature also provided valuable background detail. The thematic approach taken may be at the expense of a full chronological overview, but it aims to illustrate the major comparative trends of the period.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Elizabeth Twomey
New teachers arrive to our nation's schools with a range of educational preparation and professional experience. Schools endeavor to alleviate these differences, build professional capacity, and guarantee the efficacy of new teachers (thus more quickly improving educational quality for children) most frequently through induction programs. Researchers identify mentoring as the most common means of inducting new teachers. The school reform movement and related law have influenced mentoring frequency, goals, and practices, as have recent advances in understanding how adults learn. With the number of new teachers expected in both public and independent schools within the current decade, the intense pressure of reform mandates, and public expectations on teacher quality, the effectiveness of new teacher induction and mentoring programs is paramount. Likewise, as the nation increases in its overall diversity, how mentoring programs address the race and ethnicity of new teachers and mentors, particularly when the vast majority of veteran mentor teachers for the near future will be White, is also critical to program success. This study examined the effect of a newly implemented induction and mentoring program on a cohort of new teachers during their first year of service in an independent school. The school had a strategic initiative to diversify its faculty. Consequently, an essential element of the study was to investigate the experience of new teachers of color who were involved in cross-race mentor-new teacher relationships in contrast to the experience of their White counterparts involved in the same program for the same academic year. An overview of the study, a review of relevant literature, the study's design, results, and discussion of findings and their implications are presented

Abstract:
The four elements of the lower hind foot (calcaneus, metatarsal, naviculo-cuboid, and tibia) were tested for use as age-independent proxies of body size in white-tailed deer using known aged specimens from Ft. Hood Texas. Statistical analysis indicates that the calcaneum and the tibia are good proxies of age-independent body size in white-tailed deer. In addition to expanding the list of elements that can be used for studies of age-independent body size, these elements can also be used to age faunal remains to an ordinal scale of juveniles and adults. This is useful for research regarding prehistoric prey populations; as a single element can be used to determine prey body size and age simultaneously, which are the two variables used to assess changes in human subsistence practices via the archaeological remains of their prey.

Xiao, Ying. "New tools for unsupervised learning." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/52995.

Full text
Abstract:
In an unsupervised learning problem, one is given an unlabelled dataset and hopes to find some hidden structure; the prototypical example is clustering similar data. Such problems often arise in machine learning and statistics, but also in signal processing, theoretical computer science, and any number of quantitative scientific fields. The distinguishing feature of unsupervised learning is that there are no privileged variables or labels which are particularly informative, and thus the greatest challenge is often to differentiate between what is relevant or irrelevant in any particular dataset or problem. In the course of this thesis, we study a number of problems which span the breadth of unsupervised learning. We make progress in Gaussian mixtures, independent component analysis (where we solve the open problem of underdetermined ICA), and we formulate and solve a feature selection/dimension reduction model. Throughout, our goal is to give finite sample complexity bounds for our algorithms -- these are essentially the strongest type of quantitative bound that one can prove for such algorithms. Some of our algorithmic techniques turn out to be very efficient in practice as well. Our major technical tool is tensor spectral decomposition: tensors are generalisations of matrices, and often allow access to the "fine structure" of data. Thus, they are often the right tools for unravelling the hidden structure in an unsupervised learning setting. However, naive generalisations of matrix algorithms to tensors run into NP-hardness results almost immediately, and thus to solve our problems, we are obliged to develop two new tensor decompositions (with robust analyses) from scratch. Both of these decompositions are polynomial time, and can be viewed as efficient generalisations of PCA extended to tensors.

Abstract:
The subject of 'independence' of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has emerged as a key issue in post-apartheid South African public discourse. While the importance of 'independence' has rarely been questioned, the term's meaning has been subject to fragmented understandings and vague interpretations. This thesis explores the origins of divergent conceptions of 'independence', examining how these conceptions are constructed by staff within the SABC. The central task of this thesis is to critically examine the contested concept of 'independence' a task it accomplishes by engaging with issues of power, knowledge and identity. To this end, the thesis reveals that the neo-liberal policies imposed by the Washington Consensus play a significant role in shaping conceptions of 'independence' through their power to dictate policy in countries in the Global South, including South Africa. This power, exercised through dominant Washington Consensus institutions, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), inform knowledge and identities at a local level through the adoption of neo-liberal macro-economic strategies, such as Growth Employment and Redistribution (GEAR). As a result, there is no local without the global. The engagement with issues of power, identity and knowledge and their relationships to how 'independence' is understood ensures that meanings of 'independence' are contested and that 'independence' is not an immovable edifice. 'Independence' is only a product of an evolving matrix, in which the staff of the SABC, who are divided into four different tiers, construct their own interpretations of 'independence', shaped by their understandings of both organisational and external factors, such as politics and advertisers, in relation to their work. Using data from interview respondents and an analysis of key public policy documents, this thesis presents two key processes that influence understandings of 'independence' and, therefore, link the SABC to the larger external socio-political environment. These two key factors, the commercialisation of the SABC and the African National Congress (ANC) power struggles have helped to shape the four conceptions of 'independence' advanced in this thesis: namely, the legalistic, anti-establishment, political and professional conceptions of 'independence'. At the core of this thesis are two questions: How do staff within the SABC construct and understand the meaning of 'independence' of the SABC, and what has influenced these conceptions in post-apartheid South Africa? Consistent with these research questions, the thesis is located within the interpretive tradition, since it seeks to understand the world of the SABC through the lens of its staff. To complement the interpretivist approach, the thesis situates the SABC and its understandings of 'independence' within the wider South African context, in which the meaning of 'independence' should also be understood as being inextricably intertwined with and a product of the shifting developmental state of the macro-economic environment. The critical political economy of the media is, therefore, used as an explanatory framework for understanding how the macro-worlds of politics and economic strategies intersect within the micro-world of the SABC to shape conceptions of 'independence'. The thesis concludes by arguing that it is not a strong and domineering state that seeks to control public service broadcasting; instead, it is a weak state that does so because of a need to curtail public discourse, which might present a threat to its own existence if left uncontrolled. As a result, it is difficult to separate the SABC from the state and, for that reason, the role of the public service broadcaster (PSB) is tied to the national narrative which itself is tied to the larger global matrices of power.

This thesis explores the evolving nature of independent music practices in the context of offline and online social networks. The pivotal role of social networks in the cultural production of music is first examined by treating an independent record label of the post-punk era as an offline social network. This develops a useful framework for then considering the similar and distinctive ways in which contemporary independent practices are enabled and/or shaped by online social networks. Analysis is based on close, comparative readings of the structures and affordances of two case studies: the UK-based Rough Trade record label (1978 - 1991) and MySpace (2003 - present). Numerous examples of artists and their practices are drawn upon to illustrate how discursive meanings of independence are negotiated within each network. Investigated are potentials for realizing not only autonomy from the mainstream music industry, but also a range of other post-punk ideals tied to a broader independent ethos concerned with issues of access and participation, artistic control and freedom, as well as desires to engender more diverse music cultures. The intersection of offline and online networks in the context of today's dynamic, transitional music industry further provides new opportunities for more meaningful artist-to-artist, artist-to-fan, and artist-to-company/label interactions. By emphasizing the centrality of social networks, conceptions of autonomous, "do-it-yourself" music making are problematized in favor of "do-it-together" understandings that foreground cooperation.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates a network of new independent Christian schools in England, with special reference to their teenage pupils. The place of faith-based schools in British society currently constitutes a contentious issue; the nature of this controversy is explored before a description and evaluation of the schools and their educational aims is given. A wide-ranging survey is then described. This survey investigated the views, values and beliefs of 695 teenage pupils who were receiving their education in the schools in 2006. Its purpose was to discover to what extent the aims of the schools were being realised amongst their older pupils. At the same time, the survey was designed to address the criticisms aimed at faith-based schools, particularly the charge that such schools might be inadequately preparing young people for life as citizens of modern Britain. The results reveal an unusual cohort of young people. The majority of the pupils claim to hold religious beliefs and values which differ from the current norms of British society but which would not necessarily jeopardise acceptable British citizenship. The data indicate that the schools are achieving their aims of enabling pupils to develop and retain the belief system and moral position taken by their parent bodies and founding churches. The results show that male pupils hold the same beliefs as female pupils and that the older pupils are as likely to be religious as are the younger. These findings differ from those found by similar surveys conducted in other British contexts. Finally, the data reveal the existence of a small subset of pupils who claim not to hold religious beliefs and whose views and values differ substantially from those of the majority of their fellow pupils. The data also suggest that the anomalous position of these pupils is not necessarily detrimental to their well-being.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a survey of type design during the period 1987 to 1997, the decade after the widespread adoption of device-independent digital type design and typesetting software. Prompted by technological innovation, this study explores the ways in which the new technologies of type have changed type design practice. Throughout this text there is an emphasis on the cultural and economic circumstances of type design; the examination of the influence of technology on design practice is reconciled with the recognition of the broader context of that practice. Each of the four chapters that make up the body of this thesis concentrates on the design of type within a specific geographical region: The West and East Coasts of America, London and the.Netherlands. All of these locations are proposed as centres of significant contemporary type design activity. Dealing with these regions in series of distinct chapters, it is suggested that the practice of type design is not uniform across the globe, but is, in part, a product of local culture. While it is acknowledged that digital communications technologies are most likely to be used to promote globalisation, within this thesis the emphasis is on the ways in which those technologies allow the pursuit of the small-scale and the local. This thesis is original in scope; the subject of digital type design has been explored within dissertations written by graphic design students as part of undergraduate or graduate design degrees, but there has been no other sustained research into the subject at this level. Equally it is original in nature; drawing not only from the models of typographic history, but also from those of design history and cultural studies, this thesis stands apart from the body of writing that already exists on the subject. It is hoped that this text will contribute to the understanding of recent type design practice and will also indicate new paths of research into type design and typography.

Compelling arguments suggest the presence of new physics at the electroweak scale, an energy regime accessible to the Fermilab Tevatron. Unfortunately, predictions for the form that new physics will take are all over the map. A quasi-model-independent search strategy for new physics (SLEUTH) was introduced in Tevatron Run I to allow a probe of high-pT hadron collider data. This dissertation prescribes the SLEUTH algorithm that will be used in Tevatron Run II. Improvements over the Run I algorithm are discussed, and an intuition is developed for SLEUTH'S performance by considering a number of beyond-the-standard-model examples. This dissertation defines a priori the SLEUTH algorithm, before its application to Tevatron Run II data, allowing an unbiased and rigorous a posteriori measure of the "interestingness" of any observed signal. This algorithm will also be used with small modifications at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. In addition, a new detector simulation, TurboSim, was tested for physics analysis use for the first time.

Fang, I.-Chieh. "Growing up and becoming independent : an ethnographic study of new generation migrant workers in China." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2011. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/373/.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on anthropological fieldwork in factories in China’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs), this dissertation examines the process of ‘growing up’ and ‘becoming independent’ for young migrant workers from the countryside, especially in relation to their decisions about employment and marriage. In ‘post-socialist’ China, as many writers have observed, the old systems and ideas have not entirely faded away but new market logics have been imposed on them. Partly as a result of this, the process of achieving adulthood – i.e. the process through which young people should, in theory, learn how to position themselves as full members of society – is now filled with uncertainties. Old expectations about interactions with others have become invalid. This is especially so for young migrant workers from the countryside who, as I argue, possess a double social being, i.e. they are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, and who face the challenges of multilocality, i.e. they shift back and forth between rural and urban environments. For them, migration is a mandatory rite of passage, but one that often leaves them suspended in a position of liminality and uncertainty. The research found that young workers learn, in the course of migration, that manipulating personal networks is the most efficient way for them to get the resources they need – so that they can deal with the problems of uncertainty they face. They rely on the rather traditional mode of ‘interconnected personhood’, instead of developing what might be called ‘individualistic personhood’. Having said this, they are meanwhile enjoying the freedom, opportunities and symbolic values that individualistic personhood can bring them. They stand in between the two systems and typically avoid fully committing to one or the other. This is how they deal with risks and responsibilities within the constraints imposed by their background, gender, and class position.

Grierson, Stuart William. "The role of referrals in new client capture within the field of independent financial advice." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/15368.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of regulated financial services has been ill-served by marketing theory. As a consequence: (1) the nature of marketing in this sector has been misunderstood; (2) the key mechanism for generating new business in the field, namely, referrals, has been the subject of serious misapprehension; and, (3) the guidance offered to practitioners has been negligible. In particular, the role of the independent financial advisor (IFA) appears to have been conceptualised as a sales role, and the nature of the relationship between the IFA and the client has been addressed as though it were a straightforward buyer-seller relationship, with the IFA selling products to the client. It is unlikely that these conceptualisations were ever satisfactory and following recent regulatory changes in the sector they have become even less relevant. Since January 1st 2013 commission-based selling of financial investment products to consumers has been prohibited so that independent financial advice has become largely a fee-based service. The focus of this research is on referrals as a method of generating new business; the research context is the UK independent financial advice industry. The objectives of the study are to: (1) define and conceptualise referrals in the context of the financial advice industry; (2) develop a framework of the referral process; (3) provide practitioners with empirical evidence in connection with their embedded beliefs about referrals in this industry; (4) explore whether (as many practitioner believe) it is possible to actively manage referral generation within a financial advice business; and, (5) to investigate the importance of referrals as a means of generating new business for advisors. It was found that practitioners believe they influence referrals in four main ways: excellent service, higher qualifications, contact frequency and speed of response. However the results of this study clearly indicate that referrals are not the outcome of agency; they are a random occurrence, determined by happenstance and the result of an opportunist conversation between a prospect and a client. In turn, contrary to the advice of consultancy providers, asking for referrals was found to be ineffective and not welcomed by consumers. While word-of-mouth (WOM) often instigates referral generation, the value of WOM, needs be treated with caution, since consumers were found to have limited understanding of the service provided by independent advisors. Despite the importance consumers attribute to investment performance practitioners do not, commonly, provide investment benchmarks nor do consumers use analytical tools to assess the performance of their advisor. The absence of performance measures connects with the finding that practitioners have difficulty in describing what they do hence consumers are uncertain how to describe the service and what to say about it when asked.

These learners already have considerable degree-relevant knowledge and skill, yet this usually does not count as part of a taught degree, and these learners usually do not enrol in such degree programmes because they do not have the time to study within the typical delivery framework. The ILP approach provides equity of access for this group but is a significantly different learning process which challenges traditional conceptions of degree level learning and in turn is challenged as a valid approach by academics and regulatory agencies. Hence this study aims both to illuminate and validate the degree level learning which occurs in the ILP and to develop a model of practice for facilitators to assure the quality of this degree level learning. In pursuit of these aims I undertook, as a participant researcher, a work-based enquiry using an interpretive approach, drawing on the principles of grounded theory (Glaser and Strauss 1967), (Strauss and Corbin 2015). The project research phase commenced with an extensive survey sent to all (423) learners who studied with Capable NZ from 2006-2014, followed up with ten in-depth interviews with current learners, and eight interviews with facilitators of the ILP model. I captured the themes emerging from the feedback and analysis to identify clear signposts for both effective learning and effective facilitation in an independent learning context. This study has resulted in a (grounded) model of practice for the teachers, referred to in Capable NZ as facilitators, who guide ILP learners. This model of practice includes a competency framework, successful practice guidelines and practical learning tools. The study has also resulted in guidelines and learning tools for learners, and for both facilitators and learners the ‘SPRINGBOARD’ tool has been developed as a reflective framework for effective facilitation and learning respectively. Another key outcome of the study is the illumination and validation of the degree level learning which occurs through the ILP process.

Abstract:
In the 1990s, an educational reform changed the Swedish school market. The reform allows anyone with permission from the Swedish Schools Inspectorate to establish an independent school. The main objective of this paper is to examine how new establishments of independent upper-secondary schools affect the public school’s costs per student during the time period 2005 to 2014. Using application data, we can separate municipalities in which independent schools have been established and where they have not. This data allows us to estimate a Difference in Difference model where the treatment is a new establishment. The results reveal three key findings: first, on average, municipalities experience a cost decrease if new independent schools are established. Second, a common trend exists in the pre-period between the two types of municipalities. Third, decomposing the total public school cost per student, the establishment of new upper-secondary schools reduces teaching, equipment and healthcare costs. Further research should examine the political objectives on the municipality level for new establishments. In the future it may be important, from a policy perspective, that if municipalities are given a veto right in the establishment process, market competition will be determined based on political preferences.

Abstract:
The goal of this essay is to draw a critical panorama of the young independent Brazilian cinema, known as novíssimo cinema brasileiro (brand new Brazilian cinema), from 2005 to 2011. Aesthetically, this new generation takes forms already established in contemporary international arthouse cinema and incorporates them in a particular manner, through which film language procedures seem stiffened, highlighting the detail, the weight of the extension of time and the power of specific moments instead of ambience, the movement and the porosity of flux aesthetics, thus reflecting its own problematic experience of interchange with the social body. The films gain in subjective power, an expression of the sensibility of the creator-narrator. The interaction between this sensibility and an outer world in crisis permeates the interpretation of the pieces, demonstrating how the formal solutions contained in the films go from a growlingly timid outlook to an affirmation of this extremely subjective outlook as a radical posture before impasse, making it possible to speak of a timid radicalism, which wishes to explode the world but has no energy to do so, thereby suspending confrontation.

Abstract:
Testing an integrated circuit once it has been manufactured is required in order to identify faulty and fault-free circuits. As the complexity of integrated circuits increases so does the difficulty of creating efficient and high quality tests that can detect a variety of defect types that can occur throughout the manufacturing process. Three issues facing manufacturing test are the power consumed during testing, addressing different types of fault, and test data volume. In regards to the power consumed during testing, abnormal switching activity, far above that seen by functional operation, may occur due to the testing technique of scan insertion. While scan insertion greatly simplifies test generation for sequential circuits, it may lead to excessive switching activity due to the loading and unloading of scan data and when the scan cells are updated using functional clocks. This can potentially damage the circuit due to excessive heat or inadvertently fail a good circuit due to current supply demands beyond design specifications. Stuck-at tests detect when lines are shorted to either the power supply or ground. Open faults are broken connections within the circuit. Some open faults may not be detected by tests generated for stuck-at faults. Therefore tests may need to be generated in order to detect these open faults. The voltage on the open node is determined by circuit parameters. Due to the feature size of the circuit it may not be possible to determine these circuit parameters, making it very difficult or impossible to generate tests for open faults. Automated test equipment is used to apply test stimuli and observing the output response. The output response is compared to the known fault-free response in order to determine if it is faulty or fault-free. Thus, automated test equipment must store the test stimuli and the fault-free responses in memory. With increased integrated circuit complexity, the number of inputs, outputs, and faults increase, increasing the overall data required for testing. Automated test equipment is very expensive, proportional to the memory required to store the test stimuli and fault-free output response. Simply replacing automated test equipment is not cost effective. These issues in the manufacturing test of integrated circuits are addressed in this dissertation. First, a method to reduce power consumption in circuits which incorporate data volume reduction techniques is proposed. Second, a test generation technique for open faults which does not require knowledge of circuit parameters is proposed. Third, a technique to further reduce output data volume in circuits which currently incorporate output response compaction techniques is proposed. Experimental results for the three techniques show their effectiveness.

Abstract:
Support for the creation of an independent Catalan state has increased significantly during the past two decades. In 2017, an estimated 40.2 percent of the total Catalan population supported the creation of an independent Catalonia. The road towards independence has shown to be filled with legal obstacles. While the separatists tend to base their demand for independence on a supposed “right to self-determination” and a “right to decide”, the meaning and effects of invoking these “rights” can be questioned. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the legal possibilities of forming an independent Catalan state based on these commonly invoked rights. With regard to self-determination, this thesis concludes that all peoples have a right to self-determination, but this right does not necessarily entail a right to secession. Only under grave circumstances can self-determination lead to secession. The Catalans are not in such a situation and cannot therefore successfully claim that their right to self-determination entails a right to secede from Spain. As to a “right to decide”, the right as such exists neither within international law nor Spanish national law. This right can be broken down into two parts: The possibility to hold a referendum on independence and the possibility to declare independence based on the referendum. The thesis concludes that despite a referendum being complicated, but not impossible, to organise based on the Spanish Constitution, the Catalans can organise such a referendum based on international human rights law. The Catalans can also unilaterally declare independence since there is no explicit prohibition against doing so. Finally, the thesis discusses the issue of international recognition. Catalonia is unlikely to receive international recognition under the current circumstances. The thesis then concludes that even though the Catalans do not have a right to self-determination in the form of secession, they could organise a referendum and unilaterally declare independence. Such a declaration will however have no effect in practice without recognition from the international community.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the discursive struggle in the New Caledonian media over the question of independence during the period of most acute conflict during the 1980s. It seeks to demonstrate that the discursive struggle was central to the political struggle, particularly in its emphasis on the development of discourses on identity which authorised particular forms of political engagement. Colonial discourses in New Caledonia provided a well tested armory of identifications of the territory’s indigenous people which were mobilised in the anti-independence media, particularly the territory’s monopoly daily newspaper Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes. The thesis attempts to demonstrate how these identifications connoted, in effect, the non-existence of Kanaks through a denial of a ‘Kanak’ identity: Melanesians who identified themselves as Kanaks and took a pro-independence stance were not recognised within the colonial identity constructions of ‘Caledonian’ and ‘Melanesian’, and their claims to constitute a ‘people’ were vociferously denied. They existed within colonial discourses as a human absence, and were therefore considered to have no rightful claim on Caledonian political life. In the face of such identifications, the pro-independence movement articulated in its media notions of ‘Kanakness’ and the ‘Kanak people’ which sought to hyper-valorise their identity as human and rightful.¶ It is argued that an analysis of media discourses requires consideration of the type of institutional constraints operating within the media institutions from within which these discourses emerge. The thesis therefore analyses the major constraints operating within Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes and the two major pro-independence media organisations, ‘Kanaky’s first newspaper’ Bwenando and ‘Kanaky’s first radio station’ Radio Djiido.¶ As an overarching concern, the thesis attempts to work through and apply different theoretical approaches relevant to the analysis of media reporting in situations of heightened political contestation, negotiating through aspects of neo-Marxist and post-structuralist approaches. It assesses the relevance of the notion of ‘ideological effect’ as an analytical tool in assessing the effects of power produced by particular discourse, concluding that some theoretical notion concerned with elucidating the differential effects of power is required.¶
