Abstract:
Online Social Media (OSM) have been substantially transforming the process of spreading news, improving its speed, and reducing barriers toward reaching out to a broad audience. However, OSM are very limited in providing mechanisms to check the credibility of news propagated through their structure. The majority of studies on automatic fake news detection are restricted to English documents, with few works evaluating other languages, and none comparing language-independent characteristics. Moreover, the spreading of deceptive news tends to be a worldwide problem; therefore, this work evaluates textual features that are not tied to a specific language when describing textual data for detecting news. Corpora of news written in American English, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish were explored to study complexity, stylometric, and psychological text features. The extracted features support the detection of fake, legitimate, and satirical news. We compared four machine learning algorithms (k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB)) to induce the detection model. Results show our proposed language-independent features are successful in describing fake, satirical, and legitimate news across three different languages, with an average detection accuracy of 85.3% with RF.

Abstract:
In this paper, the authors investigate the topic-independent Chinese sentiment identification problem from online news. They analyze the word usage and sentence structure of the documents for inferring representative terms and sentences in the documents, and then employ the feature values of each document for identifying the opinion of the topic-independent online news. The support vector machine (SVM) is leveraged for training the classified model in terms of the extracted features and identifying the opinion orientation of the topic-independent documents by the trained model. Experimental results demonstrated that the authors' features are helpful for identifying the opinions of the topic-independent documents, and can help readers for filtering out the negative documents.

Abstract:
Independently owned news websites are an emerging but understudied part of the changing news business. This study applied resource-based theory to an analysis of the longevity of these mostly small-scale entrepreneurial ventures. The results show that as an aggregate sample, the sites do not fit the theory’s expectations. Disaggregating the sample by the sites’ basic business model uncovered clear differences between for-profits and nonprofits in the effect of resources on their longevity. The sharpest difference was for “product reputation,” which had inverse effects between the two groups.

Abstract:
In SharePoint 2013, Microsoft added a social networking function in the personal sites (My Site) of a user. In this version, a personal news feed has been added which shows events regarding subjects the user follows, such as document changes, user updates, tagged posts, and site activities. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate whether or not it is possible to extend the news feed function by adding an independent component as part of My Site, to allow users to follow corporate news by choosing their categories of interests. A prototype of the component was implemented and it met most of the objectives stated in the thesis. It is added to the default page of the user’s My Site as a web part and it is able to retrieve and display news that matches the user’s subscription. Although the web part still needs improvements in both functionality and design, it still confirms that it is possible to extend the current My Site news feed with such a component. Since the students working on this thesis had no prior knowledge of SharePoint or .NET development, the project brought new challenges, as the students needed to learn how to work in a SharePoint environment and to learn to use Microsoft Visual Studio for .NET development.

Abstract:
The world of journalism is becoming increasingly dangerous, as figures published by international media organisations demonstrate. But the Western news media suggests, that particularly Western foreign correspondents are facing incredibly high risks and cases of abducted, tortured and murdered foreign correspondents are reported regularly. The question arises “Have they become targets?” Foreign correspondence has been a dangerous occupation since it first emerged during the Crimean War, when the first consistent war reporting was established. Ever since then, foreign correspondents have had to face opposition, criticism and harsh realities. However, they have also always been highly valued journalists and well-respected for their courage to travel overseas, often into conflict-riddled areas, to report important news to their audiences back home. Sometimes they have even lost their lives in the pursuit of truth. Daniel Pearl, Christian Struwe and Karen Fischer or Trent Keegan are just a few examples of the many correspondents and journalists who have died as martyrs for their profession. As the actual data published by international media organisations, such as Reporters Without Borders, the Committee to Protect Journalists or Freedom House, suggests, it has rapidly become worse for all journalists in the last 20 years and there is worse to come. It appears as if the factors leading to their deaths are increasing and will be contributing to even higher death tolls in the future. The thesis will consider such questions as: Who is there to protect journalists and foreign correspondents? Independent media organisations are trying their best. The international press is bemoaning the many deaths and governments have promulgated laws to protect their reporters, but does that actually help? Will those attempts make it better in future? And can the Western news media apparatus itself be held partly responsible for some of the deaths?

Myers, Linda Mary. "Women's independent travel experiences in New Zealand." Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2010. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/3308/.

Full text
Abstract:
An ever-increasing number of women worldwide are making the most of their independence and becoming increasingly motivated to travel more than ever before. Women are grasping the opportunity to be tourists in their own right; for their own pleasure and satisfaction, breaking away from their hybrid identities of, ‘the wife’, ‘mother’, ‘girlfriend’ or the ‘housewife’. Women of all ages are beginning to become empowered and to travel together in close female friendship groups, in two’s or alone. They are gaining confidence and are able to independently self-organise their trips. Educational opportunity and financial self sufficiency through improvement in earning capacities has greatly increased women’s access to a much wider range of leisure and travel choices. Personal life spans involve significant chronological transitions, such as from university to work, marriage to divorce, work to retirement where identity has to be renegotiated; new autobiographies reconstructed, and new trajectories have to be set. Often, it seems women are motivated to travel during such transitional circumstances. Despite the tendency to assume that male appeals are universal, research suggests that female and male perceptions and experiences of space differ substantially. In tourism, gender relationships have been examined from a number of perspectives; women as the employee's of the tourism industry; women as hosts in the tourism destination; and more recently women as tourists. Women are slowly being recognised as a market segment, facilities and different services in luxury hotels, women only tours and cruises are evolving to meet demand. The gendered perceptions and ideologies of New Zealand; being 100% pure nature and the adventure capital of the world which is open to all, ages, and abilities, attracts statistically more women backpacker travellers than men. A major objective of this thesis is to redress the bias in tourism research; to represent women including lesbian women in the tourism arena. In both cases giving women a ‘voice’ to represent their touristic experiences, desires and link these to the notion of identity construction through tourism. Little remains known on the wider variables and influences that motivate the travel choices of lesbian consumers in particular. It has been argued that female tourism experiences, like their leisure behaviours, are constrained by male dominated cultural values and attitudes at destinations and by social constraints and restrictions in their home society. However, on the other hand it has also been argued that some women’s tourism experiences - such as backpacking and independent travelling- can also be potentially liberating for some women as they gain the freedom to express their often hybrid identities in new ways. The focus in this study is towards the positive gains and benefits to the individual through travel experiences, but this cannot be done in isolation without considering some of the constraints and challenges. It is multidisciplinary in approach, grounded in theoretical frameworks offered by gender studies, tourism studies, social science, leisure studies, women’s studies, queer theory, cultural geography and sports studies. It is a qualitative study which sets out to explore tourism experiences and the personal growth and identity development through tourism experiences in New Zealand. Sixty in-depth interviews were held with international women travellers, backpackers and tourism providers in New Zealand. Adopting an interpretive paradigm with a limited feminist influenced, the important focus was to allow the women to speak of their experiences and lives in their own voices. In line with qualitative methodologies, it is the words and photographs of the women that form the data set for this study. It critically examines how a performative understanding of the playing out of gender can be linked to notions of serious leisure, the reflective production of biographies and accumulation of cultural capital. The results reveal that personal development, self identity and social identity can be influenced by travel experiences in varying degrees. Four interlinking categories of importance were identified; embodied experiences, psychological development, socio-spatial interactions and visual consumption. Each category evolved and was sometimes dependent upon age and sexuality. The results of this study show that there are real benefits to personal growth and identity development to women through their travel experiences. Through travel women make the time or find the time to self-reflect on their lives. They escape from the social constraints at home and can achieve a sense of freedom. Through the act of travelling itself and through participating in physical adventure activities travel can present a means of empowerment and a record of achievement. The confidence gained through travel experiences can enhance self-esteem and help construct a new dimension to their identities.

Encarnacao, John. "Punk aesthetics in independent "new folk", 1990-2008." Electronic version, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/981.

Full text
Abstract:
Various commentators on punk (e.g. Laing 1985, Frith 1986, Goshert 2000, Reynolds 2005, Webb 2007) have remarked upon an essence or attitude which is much more central to it than any aspects of musical style. Through the analysis of specific recordings as texts, this study aims to deliver on this idea by suggesting that there is an entire generation of musicians working in the independent sphere creating music that combines resonances of folk music with demonstrable punk aesthetics. Given that the cultural formations of folk and punk share many rhetorics of authenticity – inclusivity, community, anti-establishment ideals and, to paraphrase Bannister (2006: xxvi) ‘technological dystopianism’ – it is perhaps not surprising that some successors of punk and hardcore, particularly in the U.S., would turn to folk after the commercialisation of grunge in the early 1990s. But beyond this, a historical survey of the roots of new folk leads us to the conclusion that the desire for spontaneity rather than perfection, for recorded artefacts which affirm music as a participatory process rather than a product to be consumed, is at least as old as recording technology itself. The ‘new folk’ of the last two decades often mythologises a pre-industrial past, even as it draws upon comparatively recent oppositional approaches to the recording as artefact that range from those of Bob Dylan to obscure outsider artists and lo-fi indie rockers. This study offers a survey of new folk which is overdue – to date, new folk has been virtually ignored by the academic literature. It considers the tangled lineages that inform this indie genre, in the process suggesting new aspects of the history of rock music which stretch all the way back to Depression-era recordings in the shape of Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music. At the same time, it attempts to steer a middle course between cultural studies approaches to popular music which at times fail to directly address music at all, and musicological approaches which are at times in danger of abstracting minutae until the broader frame is completely lost. By concentrating on three aspects of the recordings in question - vocal approach, a broad consideration of sound (inclusive of production values and timbre), and structure as it pertains to both individual pieces and albums – this work hopes to offer a fresh way of reading popular music texts which deals specifically with the music without losing sight of its broader function and context.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
Following the breakdown of the Soviet Union, one of the world's strongest oil producing industries was divided into a few major oil provinces. The Russian energy industry has been adversely affected by this process. The process of change to the former Soviet oil industry including: Russian efforts to maintain control of its former resources, NIS resource development, Western capital investment, and environmental issues in the major oil provinces of the former Soviet Union, is the main focus of this thesis. Free market world oil majors and their counterparts, both in Russia and the New Independent States, have developed a number of significant alliances that have resulted in several potentially lucrative joint ventures. The coercive tactics that the Russian government resorts to in an effort to prevent its former republics from efficiently developing their reserves, and the position the United States must take to ensure these efforts are stifled will be addressed. A sound grasp of these critical energy issues by American policy makers will result in the development of these vast resources in a manner favorable to U. S. national interests. This will provide security for our strategic reserves and offer a viable alternative to the Persian Gulf resources far into the twenty-first century.

Abstract:

Includes bibliographical references (p. 235-242).
The Standard Model of elementary particles can not be the final theory. There are theoretical reasons to expect the appearance of new physics, possibly at the energy scale of few TeV. Several possible theories of new physics have been proposed, each with unknown probability to be confirmed. Instead of arbitrarily choosing to examine one of those theories, this thesis is about searching for any sign of new physics in a model-independent way. This search is performed at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The Standard Model prediction is implemented in all final states simultaneously, and an array of statistical probes is employed to search for significant discrepancies between data and prediction. The probes are sensitive to overall population discrepancies, shape disagreements in distributions of kinematic quantities of final particles, excesses of events of large total transverse momentum, and local excesses of data expected from resonances due to new massive particles. The result of this search, first in 1 fb-1 and then in 2 fb-1, is null, namely no considerable evidence of new physics was found.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 2003, Brazilian foreign policy recovered more clearly the pattern verified between 1930 and 1980. The State once again adopted a fundamental role in the development process, leading the economy towards the so called social development process. The goals of the country have changed and the universalism, already settled, supported the effort for the country to become a real protagonist in the main international issues. The innovation consists in the emphasis that the Lula Administration put in the social reform, both internal and external. The philosophical premise that bases the current administration is that there is a mutual relationship between those dimensions, and that the solution of the internal problems is conditioned to the strengthening of the Brazilian position in the international system. Considering that social justice is a ground to this administration, some elements have been identified that make it possible to compare President Lula’s foreign policy with the Independent Foreign Policy from the early sixties (Política Externa Independente – PEI). For this similarity, but also for didactical purposes, the current period is named New Independent Foreign Policy (Nova Política Externa Independente – Nova PEI). For this similarity, but also for didactical purposes, the current period is named New Independent Foreign Policy (Nova Política Externa Independente – Nova PEI). The strategy must be evaluated according to the main tactical lines adopted since 2003, and that correspond to PEI’s tactical lines: democracy and multilateralism, international trade, South-South cooperation and social justice. Democracy and Multilateralism are goals, determined by an instrument on which they depend to be fulfilled, South-South cooperation. As a synthesis, Social Justice is considered the philosophy that underlies “Nova PEI’s” discourse and action. It is a renovation process of the Brazilian role to make the country a protagonist in global matters. Having in mind the intention to ease the understanding of Nova PeI, it will be constructed a comparison to PEI, in which it finds its origins. But its originality derives from the combination of the tactical lines mentioned related to the configuration of the international system. After pointing the limits of both policies, the summary of the ideas gathered will risk to try and indicate the challenges the Brazilian foreign policy will face in the new century. Finally, it will be considered if it is possible a diplomacy for development in this century.

Abstract:
AbstractUnderpinning the Victorian public sphere was a network characterized by an intense pursuit of immediacy. By creating an abstract and ‘empty’ space where the public might observe and participate in ongoing events on a societal scale, this network served to establish public opinion as a source of political legitimacy. The telegraph, the development of professional journalistic skill sets, and the extraction of colonial natural resources made it possible to extend the news network beyond regional and national borders. The uniform typographical ‘form of news’ characterizing Victorian daily newspapers was an effect of specific technological adjustments needed to move newsworthy events across vast distances without interruption or distortion. In this way, the news network mediated a secular time independent of motion.

"Fake News and Informing Science [Abstract]." In InSITE 2019: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences: Jerusalem. Informing Science Institute, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4259.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: The goal of the paper is to consider how the informing phenomenon referred to as “fake news” can be characterized using existing informing science conceptual schemes. Background: A brief review of articles relating to fake news is presented after which potential implications under a variety of informing science frameworks are considered. Methodology: Conceptual synthesis. Contribution: Informing science appears to offer a unique perspective on the fake news phenomenon. Findings: Many aspects of fake news seem consistent with complexity-based conceptual schemes in which its potential for establishing or reinforcing group membership outweighs its factual informing value. Recommendations for Practitioners: The analysis suggests that conventional approaches to combatting fake news, such as reliance on fact checking, may prove largely ineffective because they fail to address the underlying motivation for absorbing and creating fake news. Recommendations for Researchers: Acceptance of fake news may be framed as an element of a broader information seeking strategy independent of the message it conveys. Impact on Society: The societal impact of believing of fake news may prove to be less important than its long term impact on the perceived reliability of informing channels. Future Research: A broad array of research questions warranting further investigation are posed.

Abstract:
This paper is part of series on self-contained papers in which a large part, if not the full extent, of the asymptotic limit theory of summands of independent random variables is exposed. Each paper of the series may be taken as review exposition but specially as a complete exposition expect a few exterior resources. For graduate students and for researchers (beginners or advanced), any paper of the series should be considered as a basis for constructing new results. The contents are taken from advanced books but the organization and the proofs use more recent tools, are given in more details and do not systematically follow previous one. Sometimes, theorems are completed and innovated

Abstract:
A fundamental problem in biology is to understand how fertilization initiates reproductive development. During plant reproduction, one sperm cell fuses with the egg to form an embryo, whereas a second sperm cell fuses with the adjacent central cell nucleus to form the endosperm tissue that supports embryo and/or seedling development. To understand the mechanisms that initiate reproduction, we have isolated mutants of Arabidopsis that allow for replication of the central cell and subsequent endosperm development without fertilization. In this project we have cloned the MEA gene and showed that it encode a SET- domain polycomb protein. Such proteins are known to form chromatin-protein complexes that repress homeotic gene transcription and influence cell proliferation from Drosophylla to mammals. We propose a model whereby MEA and an additional polycomb protein we have cloned, FIE , function to suppress a critical aspect of early plant reproduction and endosperm development, until fertilization occurs. Using a molecular approach we were able to determine that FIE and MEA interact physically, suggesting that these proteins have been conserved also during the evolution of flowering plants. The analysis of MEA expression pattern revealed that it is an imprinted gene that displays parent-of- origin-dependent monoallelic expression specifically in the endosperm tissue. Silencing of the paternal MEA allele in the endosperm and the phenotype of mutant mea seeds support the parental conflict theory for the evolution of imprinting in plants and mammals. These results contribute new information on the initiation of endosperm development and provide a unique entry point to study asexual reproduction and apomixis which is expected to improve crop production.
