Silbermayr, Lena, and Yigal Gerchak. "Partial pooling by independent firms with allocation according to contribution to pool." Elsevier, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ijpe.2019.06.018.

Full text
Abstract:
We consider two firms which pool some of their inventory. The pool is created by the firms' contributions, and a firm's entitlement for an allocation from the pool (if needed) is a function of its contribution. Transshipment from the pool is costly, but the firms can benefit from reduced risk through inventory sharing using the pool. We analyze the resulting non-cooperative game. We prove existence of a Nash equilibrium and compare it to a model with centralized control. An appropriate compensation cost for using the other firms contribution to the pool can induce the retailers to achieve centralized solutions. We also compare the optimal partial pooling strategy to the special cases of no pooling and complete pooling and discuss situations where it is likely that one of the special cases will be optimal. Numerical results confirm that in the prevalent practice of partial pooling the retailers can achieve higher expected profits than under no pooling or complete pooling and that there is a significant difference between a setting with independent players and a model of central control.

Abstract:
Within the last 5 years, researchers have given increased attention to preschool assessment. One test, the Battelle Developmental Inventory, has become increasingly popular for use with preschool-age children. Despite its frequent use by early intervention programs, few researchers have studied the technical adequacy of the Battelle. The predictive validity of the Battelle was examined, using 154 children with disabilities. Scores on the Battelle for children 3 to 5 years of age were compared with scores on the Scales of Independent Behavior administered to the same children 2 to 3 years later. Moderate to strong relationships were found between the scores. Scores on the Battelle motor domains appeared to correlate the strongest with the Scales of Independent Behavior Total score. In general, the Battelle appeared to be a useful measure for predicting future performance on the Scales of Independent Behavior

Abstract:
Every day system administrators perform many tasks that share one common requirement: information about the system. This information has to be up-to-date and reliable. To collect this information on demand and manually is time consuming and labour intensive. In the Network and Systems Administration (NSA) lab environment at the University of Skövde, there are many computers which need to be administrated.Today this is done by using a shared spreadsheet, a costly method with drawbacks. This project will search for answers to the question ``How can an automated client inventory improve the work of administrators at the NSA lab?''.To answer this question, a prototype will be created and its performance compared with the manual collection of information. In order to create a realistic and useful prototype, a list of requirements for inventories has to be assembled. The prototype has additionally to take the peculiarities of the NSA lab environment into account. The information has to be gathered without any permanent installation of a client, as there are no internal hard drives available. This detail makes it impossible for already existing applications to be deployed. The NSA administrators will then compare the performance of the prototype with the manual collection of data. They will conduct a trial during which they will be observed and afterwards answer some questions about the process. The results of the analysis of this data yielded a number of hypotheses.Common concepts like the time saving by automation get supported by this projects findings, but also less obvious observations are made. With the help of an automated network inventory administrators can become proactive and fix potential issues before they become problems. The extraction of information from a network inventory requires less knowledge about system administration, as the information is presented in an user interface. The user does not need to gather data as this is done by the network inventory.Only the extraction of the right information from the user interface is required.Information useful to the continued development of the prototype was collected as well. Improvements to the user interface as well as more automation should be added to the prototype in order to further improve the efficiency compared to the manual collection of information.

Burton, Christina Marie. "Quadratic Spline Approximation of the Newsvendor Problem Optimal Cost Function." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3087.

Full text
Abstract:
We consider a single-product dynamic inventory problem where the demand distributions in each period are known and independent but with density. We assume the lead time and the fixed cost for ordering are zero and that there are no capacity constraints. There is a holding cost and a backorder cost for unfulfilled demand, which is backlogged until it is filled by another order. The problem may be nonstationary, and in fact our approximation of the optimal cost function using splines is most advantageous when demand falls suddenly. In this case the myopic policy, which is most often used in practice to calculate optimal inventory level, would be very costly. Our algorithm uses quadratic splines to approximate the optimal cost function for this dynamic inventory problem and calculates the optimal inventory level and optimal cost.

ABSTRACT In recent years, the member of invention products has been largely increasing by hard-working independent inventors, at the same time, they often win related competitions overseas. However, few of those invention products are commercialized, and the reward rate of commercialization is always low. The intent of this study is first to realize the situation of commercialization and independent inventors in Taiwan; second to find out various difficulties of independent inventors in the process of patent commercialization; finally is to prove that the success of patent commercialization needs not only go with personal condition but also cooperate with industrial and regional environment. There are three steps to carry out the assumption: interview, telephonic survey, and questionnaire methods. Sample resources are the independent inventors of “Exhibition of invention” during 1994 to 1999. There had been totally 200 questionnaires, in the end 84 ones, 42% of them, are retrieved. There are several conclusions as following: 1.The invention situation of independent inventors 2.Most inventors have the experience of patent commercialization and the spirit of enterprise. 3. Independent inventors are fond of participation of invention competitions. Although they spend a lot, it doesn’t help too much. 4.The domestic environment of commercialization is not good for independent inventors to deal with patent commercialization. 5.When it comes patent commercialization, the whole environment in Taiwan provides enough resource in the process of production; however, capital, marketing route, human power, and counterfeit are great difficulties to inventors. 6.The more commercialization experiences, the fewer difficulties will inventors meet dealing with patent commercialization. However, those competition and prize records won’t do advantages to related difficulties of commercialization. 7.No matter how good relationships inventors do have, and no matter whether the industrial and regional environment provides rich elements of commercialization, it doesn’t do anything with related difficulties. 8.Inventors who have good commercial performance will perform better on searching for cooperating partners, controlling of marketing route, and obtaining of business lands. In addition, they often may get beneficial results in the negotiation of price with cooperation partners.

The following research mainly aim to discuss the considerable economic value generated by independent inventors nowadays, in which the importance of the knowledge economy and imagination are emphasized, by displaying their creativity and releasing their commercialized products into the market. After taking questionnaire and surveys, we appreciated the inventors’ basic profiles, their special characteristics, innovation courses and experiences in commercializing their inventions. Also by taking face-to-face interviews with inventors, we thoroughly acquired valuable experiences in commercialization marketing. In addition to the results from theoretical models’ analysis, we were able to understand the primary factors that affected the inventors’ achievements in the market. At Taipei International Invention Show and Technomart 2006, a survey was conducted, gathering not only inventors’ primary, effective and basic data, but also their opinion in the commercialization of their products. Moreover, in-depth interviews were managed by aiming at five most experienced inventors in the market. The main goal was to understand the concept of commercialization process, the difficulties the inventors confronted and the precaution, as well as advices, needed in the phase. The research results show that, having great interest in developing new ideas stimulates inventor’s progressive innovation. To release their products in the market, and to obtain an expected proportion of the investment’s reward rate are the decisive indicators of independent inventors’ achievements. The market’s insufficiency in product recognition and the lack of attractive promotions are the main factors of low acceptance in the market. On the contrary, innovating and practical products, with mass productions and low prices, can relatively appeal to the consumers and the market. By using theoretical models for analysis, it comes clear that: The more experienced is an independent inventor in innovating inventions, the more experienced he/she will be in commercializing them, and therefore the more patents he/she will accumulate. Furthermore, it becomes easier for him to handle the entire commercialization phase; and thus, more accomplishments will be performed.. Nevertheless, inventions that are granted international patents not only mean an acknowledgment of the inventor’s achievements, but also bring profitable benefits to the commercialization market. Using theoretical results together with contents of in-depth interviews, we may see that patent applications and the quest of invention commercialization require the gathering of sources in advance, and methodically. An essential knowledge of the product and its commercialization process are the indispensable keys for attracting manufacturers, investors and potential users. The threat of counterfeit is the inventor’s motivation to strive for perfection and innovation. It also symbolizes the market’s highly acceptance of the original invention. In order to increase the popularity of their, products, inventors must besides exchanging ideas with the consumers, also understand the market’s demands. At the same time, the government must strengthen every related policy to protect the inventor’s right and to strike over counterfeits in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
Hox genes code for transcription factors that play a major role in the development of all animal phyla. In invertebrates these genes usually occur as tightly linked cluster, with a few exceptions where the clusters have been dissolved. Only in vertebrates multiple clusters have been demonstrated which arose by duplication from a single ancestral cluster. This history of Hox cluster duplications, in particular during the early elaboration of the vertebrate body plan, is still poorly understood. In this paper we report the results of a PCR survey on genomic DNA of the pacific hagfish Eptatretus stoutii. Hagfishes are one of two clades of recent jawless fishes that are an offshoot of the early radiation of jawless vertebrates. Our data provide evidence for at least 33 distinct Hox genes in the hagfish genome, which is most compatible with the hypothesis of multiple Hox clusters. The largest number, seven, of distinct homeobox fragments could be assigned to paralog group 9, which could imply that the hagfish has more than four clusters. Quartet mapping reveals that within each paralog group the hagfish sequences are statistically more closely related to gnathostome Hox genes than with either amphioxus or lamprey genes. These results support two assumptions about the history of Hox genes: (1) The association of hagfish homeobox sequences with gnathostome sequences suggests that at least one Hox cluster duplication event happened in the stem of vertebrates, i.e., prior to the most recent common ancestor of jawed and jawless vertebrates. (2) The high number of paralog group 9 sequences in hagfish and the phylogenetic position of hagfish suggests that the hagfish lineage underwent additional independent Hox cluster/-gene duplication events.

Moody, Donna L. "Intersecting Symbols in Indigenous American and African Material Culture: Diffusion or Independent Invention and Who Decides?" 2013. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/theses/1069.

Full text
Abstract:
Native American and African American material culture of mid-19thcentury to present day appear to hold evidence for a more ancient spiritual and cultural relationship between these two diverse peoples. There is evidence of strikingly similar, and in some instances, identical, pre-Columbian (before 1492) symbols from Africa and North America which allows us to examine questions of diffusion or independent invention. This thesis provides an examination of cultural practices and spiritual beliefs of the Indigenous peoples of North America and Africa through symbols incorporated in the material culture of each, focusing primarily on textiles and it provides an exploration into the traditional knowledge systems that under-lie the adaptations and syncretism of these culture groups in creating objects and ascribing meaning to symbols. In order to understand the similarities, along with the continuity and retention of ancient belief systems, it is necessary to travel the path back, as far as possible. Anthropological debates such as diffusion vs. independent invention are encountered and examined. Through the many processes of colonization, the histories of Indigenous peoples have been sanitized or erased to accommodate European hegemony and perceptions of superior knowledge systems. In searching for that which has been misplaced or stolen through colonization, the necessity of supporting an Indigenous praxis of Theory and Method in the discipline of Anthropology is presented. By recognizing Indigenous knowledge systems, and from such a perspective, it would be disingenuous to believe that there was no intercontinental contact between the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and those of Africa prior to 1492.

As the independent invention is unacceptable under the current patent system, an independent developer is poorer than a free rider. Whenever a company finds that it has lost (or is likely to lose) the lead in technology development, the best policy for the company is to give up research activities to avoid wasteful duplication, rather than to catch up. This dissertation finds that it is absurd to establish a patent system to encourage a second-lead company to give up its research activities. One of the primary purposes of this dissertation is to suggest a system in which an independent developer will have a better position than a free rider, in order to encourage enterprises to continue to research and develop despite whether they take the lead in technology development. From different perspectives, including historical, constitutional, empirical, and economic, this dissertation finds that the independent invention defense is reasonable and worth being considered in patent-related disputes. To create the aforementioned system and to harmonize the measures of protecting patent rights with the purpose of promoting the progress of useful art, this dissertation suggests considering the independent invention defense in evaluating the four factors of preliminary injunction and permanent injunction proceedings as a mechanism to balance a patentee’s right to exclude and the public’s productive uses of science and technology.
