Business incubator is an assistance agency for beginner business which is believed to be able to generate professional, independent, and competitive entrepreneurs. This research aims to identify factors influencing the performance of business incubator’s tenants, and evaluate tenants’s satisfaction during their participation in business incubator. This research is conducted in Business Incubator of IPB by interviewing both inwall tenants and outwall tenants. The data obtained are analyzed using, Wilcoxon test with SPSS software, Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) and Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI). Result of this research reveals that performance of inwall and outwall tenants are shown by the increase of gross profit, profit, number of employee, increase of product variants, number of customer, participation in training, the presence of business assistance, participation in training, the presence of business assistance, expansion of business place, expansion of business place. marketing expansion or number of agent, and the decline of complaints experienced by tenants. According to the calculation result of IPA,CSI, tenant satisfaction level on business incubator is categorized as good. Factor that is considered need to be improved by Business Incubator of IPB is adequate human resources performance improvement, especially for assistance and service toward tenants.

Relations of two types of trust by entrepreneurs with the entrepreneurs' preference to remain an incubator tenant were examined using questionnaire data from 67 owners of companies in 6 Turkish incubators. As hypothesized, trust in incubator management had a positive and unique relation with preference to remain an incubator tenant. However, trust in other incubator tenants did not show the hypothesized positive and unique relation with preference to remain a tenant; the results indicated the relation is negative.

An incubator houses a number of new, small businesses that share space and administrative support. Management assistance is usually available and financial assistance is sometimes provided. Incubator managers can aid tenants also by encouraging and assisting them in their planning efforts. However, this study found a wide variance among incubators regarding the amount of planning by tenant firms. Further, the amount of planning by tenants appears to be a function of the amount of planning that is required or encouraged by incubator managers. The major implication is that planning can be affected by incubator managers. Thus, incubator managers should see part of their role as a planning facilitator. Additional areas for future research are suggested.

Abstract. Technology-based startup plays a vital role in improving the Indonesian economy. There are thousands of units of technology-based startups, though most of them are not adequately sustainable. The inadequacy is attributed to the fact that the products or services created are not in line with market needs and do not help understand business processes. Universities play an essential role in developing startups through business incubators to compete in the digital age. There is no conducive learning environment for business incubators in Indonesia, though the national standards are used. This research evaluates the learning process in a Technology Business Incubator in Bandung University using case study methods. Data is collected by performing in-depth interviews with three incubator managers and seven startup founders or tenants who have completed the incubation process. The business industry consists of education, design, printing, and fishery, while thehe interviews cover the process before, during, and after incubation, including the tenant's selection criteria and stages, learning processes in incubators and facilities, after graduation programs, and measurement of the impacts. The results show that the practices fit the ideal conditions, including training-focused and knowledge sharing session programs or skills, knowledge provisions, and expertise improvement programs for tenants, rental system facilities for graduates, and commercialization support. Furthermore, there are opportunities to improve several aspects, including developing tenant admission selection criteria, effective learning approaches, coaching, networking, and broader funding, graduation criteria, monitoring for graduates, and a more comprehensive range of impact measurement. This research helps guide business incubators to prioritize developing aspects of services. Moreover, evaluation using the mixed method is open for further investigation. Business incubators have a very important role in developing entrepreneurship, since it gives large opportunity to its participants to develop their business skill during incubation. The Indonesian government today provides a major boost to the development of business incubators in universities or other form of higher education institutions. The purpose of this research is to analyze the validation of the establishment of business incubator in colleges. In Ministerial Regulation (Permen) Minister of Cooperation and Small Medium Entrepreneurship the Republic of Indonesia No. 24/2015 explained that the head of the university, the Rector or the Director may issue a business incubators license. Thus, internal validation can be done by university or college management through the issuance of Decree (SK) Establishment complete with personnel appointed as manager. Furthermore, the college, has to provide a place or room consisting of office space, tenant room at least 3, discussion room 1, and tenant production display room. External validation is carried out by tenants through their success of becoming independent businessmen after being forged or incubated in a business incubator for a maximum of 3 years in one incubation period.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide insights on the relational dimension of a networked business incubator (NBI), by investigating the intermediary role of incubator management in fostering social and business ties linking tenants among each other, with the incubator management and external actors. Design/methodology/approach The paper offers a literature review on the NBIs and advances a comprehensive analytical framework of the networked incubation model. This framework is empirically illustrated through a case study research on a leading Italian private NBI, namely, H-Farm. The collection of primary data was conducted by means of face-to-face in-depth interviews and a survey. Data were processed through social network analysis (SNA) tools. Findings The results highlight the co-presence and interaction of social and business ties, which build up a vital environment nurturing an entrepreneurial ecosystem. Community-based relationships and the intermediation of incubator management are crucial for supporting tenants in product and business development activities. Research limitations/implications These results pave the way to further research, oriented to the conceptualization of a NBI as a (small) cluster. Moreover, the application of the SNA tools adopted invites further research on networked incubators, applying the same methodology in new directions. Originality/value This paper adds to previous literature on NBIs by providing evidence of the intermediary role of incubator management in promoting and facilitating social and business relationships occurring among tenants, between tenants and the incubator management, as well as with external advisors, clients and suppliers.

Currently creative industry in Indonesia is being develops as primary sector in economic development due to its capability to increase the value added of local resources, providing employment, and promoting tourism on the basis of sustainable development principles. Several techno park currently have been being developed by the government in various locations and various sector of economy as the focus of development. Sragen Tecno Park located in Central Java is one of Techno Park which focus on creative industry development trough business incubator model. In 2016 the program was followed by 10 (ten) new entrepreneurs as Tenants. By applying business incubator approach the Tenants were treated through the process beginning from selection, entrepreneurship training, managerial training, technical training, design and creativity training, as well as assistance, consulting, and advocating for marketing activities. Using the participatory action research, this qualitative study finds that business incubator model could improve creative industry values covering entrepreneurship values and art values of the Tenants, beside, supply chain and value chain of creative industry could be developed by the Tenant as well. This resulted in the improvement of business performance of the Tenant. Diffusion of innovation of creative industry values on the tenants trough business incubator model has indicated its effectiveness as an approach to develop Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), so that it has implication for policies of developing SMEs in other local resource based economic sector.

AbstractThis study investigates the extent to which tenants in a jewellery incubator in the Limpopo Province of South Africa network. Since 1994 SEDA has set up more than 31 incubation centres in furniture making, construction, chemicals, jewellery, ICT, metal fabrication, agriculture and small scale mining. This study was done through a survey conducted on tenants in the SEDA Limpopo Jewellery Incubator (SLJI). Information was obtained through a structured questionnaire. The study revealed how tenants benefit from networking around exhibitions and collective purchasing of raw material. Through the Incubator institutional mechanisms, the study explains how tenants share expertise, experiences, technology and resources. Unfortunately the tenants do not initiate the own networking programmes. They lose out on benefits associated with collective effort in other areas such as advertisements, lobbying the government for industrial stands, organising an newsletter, hiring of consultants, and organising joint training programmes. Lastly the study identified opportunities that the tenants could collectively exploit in order strengthen and sustain their businesses.

Recruitment and support processes in sustainability-profiled incubators have received little research attention. The article addresses this knowledge gap in an empirical investigation of three sustainability-oriented incubators in Sweden, Finland and Germany. The data are based on interviews with managers, stakeholders and tenants in Green Tech Park (Sweden), LADEC (Finland) and Green Garage (Germany). On average, the studied incubators had an ambition to recruit and develop sustainability-oriented start-ups, but the number of tenants must reach a critical mass if such ambitions are to become a reality. The local context influences this critical mass of start-ups and is a determining factor in generating (a) potential tenants and (b) the resources to support such firms. This suggests that incubator managers must actively seek tenants interested in sustainable entrepreneurship and that support must focus on activities in sustainability.

This research was conducted with the aim of creating an information system that can solve existing problems, namely building a web-based information system and Progressive Web Apps (PWA) using the Codeigniter and Materialize framework, which is an information system designed to manage all data collection. Tenants, activity data collection, document storage, and other data in the Directorate of Innovation and Business Incubator, and can display the required information reports quickly and efficiently. By using the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method, researchers get feedback from clients by discussing, and researchers can create systems with the best implementation to meet client needs. The results of this study are the availability of a information system that can assist users in managing all tenant data collection, activity data collection, documentation, and data on innovation products and intellectual property rights at the Directorate of Innovation and Business Incubator at Bina Darma University.

Dukungan dari Pemerintah berupa sosialisasi Peraturan Presiden RI Nomor 27 Tahun 2013 mengenai peranan inkubator bisnis dalam pendampingan usaha tenant juga masih belum optimal. Penelitian dilakukan di Inkubator Bisnis Orangenest Incubiz di Kota Bandung dan dengan mewawancarai pengelola dan tenant inkubator. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kuantitatif. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah data primer dan sekunder. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan metode balanced scorecard (BSC). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan, skor pencapaian kinerja Inkubator Bisnis Teknologi Orangenest Incubiz sebesar 41,328. The data used in this study are primary and secondary data. The data obtained were analyzed by the balanced scorecard (BSC) method. Alumni of High Education is expected to be not only job seekers but also job creators. The role of the business world in employment is enormous, both large businesses, medium businesses, and MSMEs. The absorption of labor by SMEs is far greater than others. However, the development of MSMEs is still hampered by several obstacles, including limited knowledge in the field of production technology, limitations in reading the market, marketing technology is always simple, not thinking about strategic plans both short and long term and others. Universitas PGRI Palangka Raya tries to play a role in increasing employment through the establishment of new entrepreneurs and technology-based through Business Incubator of Universitas PGRI Palangka Raya. The novelty of the approach developed in developing this Entrepreneurial Business Incubator is the application of Human Design to detect potential and weaknesses of tenants so that a business that is suitable for the tenant can be determined. The Human Design approach will help provide direction for tenants to start their own business. The selection of tenants starts from the Entrepreneurship Seminar, which is then followed by a one-week Entrepreneurship Training Bootcamp. During the Entrepreneurship Training Bootcamp, tenants will be shown their potential and weaknesses with the Human Design approach. After the Entrepreneurship Training Bootcamp, tenants are asked to perfect their business plans and are still given Entrepreneurship Coaching. Until the end of the first-year program, eight successful independent entrepreneurs have been formed.

Drawing upon human capital theory and the co-production view of business support processes, this paper investigates the moderating effects of network involvement on entrepreneurship-specific human capital (ESHC) that determines the tenants’ survival in an incubator. Longitudinal data between 2006 and 2009 of 71 ventures located in an incubator in China have been collected and analyzed. The research confirms that network involvement strengthens the influence of entrepreneurial experience on tenants’ successful graduation, but does not impact the relationship between entrepreneurial family background and tenants’ graduation.

Purpose – The ability of tenant firms to survive after incubation is dependent on the relevant capabilities they acquired during the incubation process. Several studies have established the critical roles of incubation in fostering entrepreneurship and innovation at local, national and regional levels but the processes and mechanisms of technological learning and the capability building of the tenants has received much less attention. In response to the situation, the purpose of this paper is to assess various technological learning mechanisms through which tenant firms in the incubation system in Nigeria acquired the relevant capabilities (both technological and non-technological) that will sustain them after graduation. Design/methodology/approach – The information was gathered through a preliminary survey and questionnaires were administered to elicit information from the tenant firms and the incubator managers. Data collected were analysed and presented using descriptive statistics. Findings – The internal learning mechanisms of the tenant firms were found to be fair as firms possessed good internal capabilities that helped to absorb and adapt foreign technologies to suit their individual production needs and this was demonstrated by the quality of personnel employed by the tenant firms. The study revealed poor interaction between the tenants and knowledge institutions and training programmes and facilities also played significant roles in technological capability acquisition of tenants firms. The main factors that ranked highly and influenced technological learning among the firms included the need for product improvement, the need to increase production, turnover and profit, the need to reduce production costs and compete well after graduation, while the need to enter foreign market and commercialise technology ranked average with regards to success in technological learning. Research limitations/implications – The results of the study may not be generalised because of limited sample. Practical implications – The study concluded that the technological learning capabilities of the firms could be better enhanced with adequate training and training facilities, robust linkages with knowledge centres and compliance with incubation regulations. Originality/value – This study provided information on various technological learning mechanisms through which tenant firms in the incubation system in Nigeria acquire relevant capabilities (technological and non-technological) that sustain them after graduation. The study also contributed to the growing literature on incubation system and entrepreneurship.

A business incubator is a program to encourage the emergence of student’s entrepreneurs in various universities, including Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta. The model applied in generating new entrepreneurs through business incubators at Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta is described in three (3) stages of pre-incubation, incubation, and post-incubation. In the third stage of the incubation process, post incubation, the students have been assessed their readiness before finally tenant plunge as an entrepreneur. In the previous study, the motivation or desire to become an entrepreneur is a major factor to support success in business. However, in the next stage to support business sustainability, especially in the digital era as it is today, the strong capital motivation is not enough. This study aims to examine more deeply the capabilities that must be built to support business sustainability, especially in the digital age with all the technological advances. The qualitative approach is used by using successful tenants as case studies of several types of business, in order to enrich the results of the research. Triangulation and member check processes are applied to generate the results of the research. The resulting model of this study is a refinement of the initial model by emphasizing the sustainability factor of business in the digital era that emphasizes the importance of creative ability and thinking ahead.

A year earlier, Jakarta is the champ on Instagram as the most photographed place, surpassing Sao Paulo, New York and Madrid. This phenomenon shows that Instagram is a social network that is trending in Indonesia right now. Trilogi Business Incubator (Inbistro) is a business incubator belonging to the Universitas Trilogi. From observations and discussions, there are still many tenants which assisted by Inbistro who do not understand digital marketing, especially with Instagram. Albeit, Instagram has become a popular social media in Indonesia, including for product promotion. This community service activity will try to answer the problem: how to increase the capacity of Inbistro tenants so that they understand the basics of Instagram marketing? Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate how technological hubs (THs), defined as knowledge intermediaries, can assist companies in creating successful partnerships to develop innovations. Specifically, the authors ask how THs can help firms connect with horizontal networks and how THs can assist firms on finding suppliers and customers from the vertical network with whom to collaborate. By answering these two main questions, the paper sheds light on the important role of THs and its incubators as knowledge intermediaries in innovation co-creation. Design/methodology/approach – The research is founded on a longitudinal case study of an Italian technologic hub, ComoNExT, that aims to improve the competitiveness of its local economy. Specific attention is given to the role of the incubator that was formed as a joint effort in the technology hub. Findings – The authors find that THs can facilitate networking among tenants and among tenants and external actors within the same epistemic network. The TH that the authors studied is characterized by a new business model that is founded on providing value-added services and networking. The TH sustains the networking at different levels: within tenants, with local actors, extra-local and international actors. The authors’ analysis suggest that THs become knowledge intermediaries who allow firms to identify innovation parties and transform them into innovation partners and, thus, outline the shift from outsourced innovation to co-managed innovation. Originality/value – The paper shows how knowledge intermediaries facilitate the intermediation between heterogeneous organizations who are located at different network positions and characterized by relational proximity that is the basis for reaching effective innovation. The research depicts how knowledge intermediaries reinforce the drivers of a co-membership network to co-create innovation to improve the strength of a relationship characterized by a shared vision.

Research Background: The development of fledgling enterprises, especially those associated with medium-high and high technology is not easy. They often need to develop from inception a born global strategy, which is a great challenge at the beginning of a new business. Therefore, there is a global phenomenon of incubation, which supports young enterprises in the early stages of development. In Poland, the institutional dimension of incubation (especially for enterprises associated with modern technologies) consists of technology incubators and university business incubators. Yet, scientific research con-ducted in the area of entrepreneurship incubation gives contradictory results - some assess their activity positively, others negatively.
Purpose of the article: Enterprises located in an incubator should allocate funds for R&D activities and create innovations to develop and gain market advantage. With this in mind, the purpose of the article is to check whether technology incubators and university business incubators contribute to an increase in the likelihood of conducting R&D activities and introducing product and process innovations.
Methods: The study was conducted on a sample of 1058 industrial enterprises distributed across 2 Polish NUTS level 2 regions: Pomeranian and Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodships. It concerned innovative activity that enterprises conducted in 2014?2016. Thanks to the use of probit modeling determination was made for the probability of introducing new products and conducting R&D works in entities that used the services of incubators in relation to those that did not belong to them.
Findings & Value added: Econometric modeling revealed that in the studied regions incubators contribute to an increase in the introduction of product innovations by enterprises and in conducting R&D activities. Support for the process of implementing innovation occurred significantly more often only in the case where technology incubators were involved. At the same time, it was noticed that only academic incubators increased the chances of introducing product innovations on a global scale. This means that tenants of technology incubators are more innovative than entities outside them, but their innovations in terms of the level of novelty do not differ from innovations implemented in entities outside incubators. The conducted study indicated that the transfer of systemic solutions related to stimulating innovation from developed countries to catching-up countries may be successful. This is a guideline for local authorities to create incubators that allow for an increase in the level of innovation of the incubated enterprises.

Activities include: recognition, empowerment, improvement of hard and soft skills of students, mental construct of student entrepreneurship (entrepreneur soft skills), so that students are able to be creators of jobs (job creators) not only job seekers (job seekers). The target of the program Inwabi provide assistance to the 20 students in the field of new entrepreneurial small businesses and make at least 50% managed to independently manage their own businesses. Methods of community service Papiku in Inwabi include learning, training and empowerment using the concept of Project Based Learning (PBL), which contains models of mentoring, empowerment: doing, empowering, facilitating and evaluating. Besides PBL also uses Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) of potential exploration-based talent to produce and acquire prospective new entrepreneurs accordance talent / potential of each. Implementation conducted on students who are ready to become tenants, including students PKMK, students starting a new business that already have a business. Inwabi Papiku activities include direct entrepreneurial training and learning (doing), empowered (empowering), facilitated by (facilitating), and evaluated the problem constraints (evaluating) for three months. Implementation of assistance Papiku Inwabi carried out cooperation and synergy with the institutions Socialpreneur who have competence in their fields, namely (a) the Vocational School, supports hardware-based technology, training, learning and training, (b) Talents Center, to support the implementation of potential exploration entrepreneur based talent / potential, (c) Kemal Abda, an online shop is a community in the field of internet marketing. This program selects and guides 21 students to become independent micro entrepreneurs. The method used in this program is practical learning based on business projects by training and assessing the ability of students to start and run a business based on 4 assessment criteria which include: personality, cooperation, leadership and online marketing skills to increase competitiveness and overcome constraints of limited production funding. The implementation of this KDP includes 4 stages consisting of recruitment, approach, implementation, and monitoring evaluation of 20 prospective tenants for 8 months. From these activities, it is expected that 10 tenants will become independent entrepreneurs and 5 people are still not successful.

Purpose Even in established economies, empirical studies on the relationship between business incubation and firm performance do not show unequivocally positive results. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to this debate based on the empirical evidence from the under-researched Central and Eastern European region in which no similar study has been conducted before. Due to the shorter experience with the management of business incubators and less developed institutions, business incubators may not be so effective in supporting their tenants in this region. Design/methodology/approach The authors utilise firm-level data from incubated Czech enterprises (n=205) founded after 2003 and compare them with those that have not received support from incubators. The authors implement three matching techniques to pair incubated and non-incubated companies. The outcome variables measured sales, price-cost margin, assets turnover, value added, size of total assets and size of personnel costs. Findings Compared to the control group, incubated firms reported on average lower values of the above-mentioned indicators. Presented study shows that Czech incubators have not been successful in supporting growth of incubated firms. Practical implications The study suggests that there is a clear room for improvements. Incubators should improve in attracting and selecting high potentials and in providing more effective support focussed on tenants’ growth, whereas policymakers should exercise stricter control regarding the money spent and effectiveness of incubators. Originality/value The empirical analysis was conducted based on the research gap in the studies related to the impact of business incubation in the under-researched Central and Eastern European region. It also shows that positive results from similar studies done in established economies cannot be taken for granted as they depend on the quality of institutions in a particular country.

A hybrid incubator means that a technology-based business incubators (TBIs) can implement various distinct value creation processes with the integration of the advantages of non-for-profit and for-profit TBIs at same time as Chinese government now requires government-sponsored non-for-profit TBIs to be profitable self-sustainability with less dependent on direct public subsidies, aiming to motivate these TBIs to provide higher quality services for their tenant new technology-based firms (NTBFs). Design/methodology/approach This study conducts a single in-depth case-study of Tuspark Incubator (located in Tsinghua Science Park [TSP]) with categorical analysis. Findings Three factors, i.e. incubation subdivision, intermediary platform and proactive approach, are found to be essential for a formerly government-sponsored TBI’s upgrading. Incubation subdivision enables Tuspark Incubator to create multiple incubation processes with incubator characteristic variables of both non-for-profit and for-profit incubators; with the establishment of intermediary platform, Tuspark Incubator provides specialized business support and high-quality networking from relevant specialized service organizations external to the incubator; more proactive approach with equity investment on incubating firms from Tuspark Incubator help to generate social welfare and financial profit at the same time. Practical implications For the incubators’ managers, incubation subdivision enables TBIs to operate for-profit and non-for-profit processes at the same time and provides different specific needs; more open intermediary service platforms can leverage the full potential of the actors in innovation system and help TBIs to save resource when upgrading to hybrid incubators; proactive approaches nurture learning climate and entrepreneurship environment to enhance the successful rate on NTBFs inside incubators and provide main profit source for incubators. For policy makers, using proactive approaches including creating a good milieu for incubation on technology-based start-ups and the design of public guidance funds is increasingly crucial. Originality/value This research is a pioneering study on the key factors and specific ways for the upgrade of government-sponsored non-for-profit TBIs in China to hybrid for-profit and non-for-profit incubators.

Recognizing the potential of institutional entrepreneurship, public universities are actively establishing university incubators. Literature on university entrepreneurship, university incubators, and entrepreneurship education allows us to develop a conceptual framework, identifying the multi-dimensional nature of incubator tenant firm development. Building on the precepts of resource based view theory, this paper posits the existence of dynamic element of incubator activity and relates it to the dynamic element of entrepreneurship education. Further, the role of entrepreneurship education and a community network are presented as instrumental in enabling effective collaborations. This framework contributes to the literature by highlighting the need for a multi-dimensional approach in research of incubator tenant firms. The framework also suggests effective university involvement with incubator tenant firms, as a potential university capability.

So it becomes an opportunity to maintain and improve product quality to compete in the marketing mix. While the IFE and EFE matrix values of the environmental factors are 2.864 and 2.424, indicating that PT AMS in a position of growth/stability. The result of SWOT analysis that considered mix marketing aspect (product, price, promotion and place) are strategies, then evaluated by QSPM resulting priority strategy which is expanding the marketing network products animation with promotion and market penetration through cooperation with the agency.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the existing incubation practices and to develop suggestions for other incubations programs’ practitioners, by developing a benchmark study of outstanding Taiwanese university-based incubators (UBIs). Design/methodology/approach This research result is based on the methodology for generating a benchmarking from six outstanding Taiwanese UBIs and for other business incubators around the world. Findings According to this research result, the authors propose eight key performance indicators (KPIs): three for setting up and operating UBIs and five for incubator functions and services. Among those eight KPIs, the average set-up cost is US$595,000; the average number of incubatees is 22; the length of tenancy is four years; and the growth in incubatees’ turnover is around 15 percent. Research limitations/implications Even the samples were outstanding UBIs in Taiwan; for future research, this approach might be applied to a bigger number of incubation centers or UBIs. Practical implications Many countries or areas still lack experience in setting up and running business incubators; therefore, practical advices for the managers are crucial for the success of these business incubators, and this benchmarking methodology can be applicable in some of those cases. Originality/value The benchmarking methodology for setting up the values of each KPI and the evaluation approach.

Although Spain is among the countries that have been investing heavily in these institutions, there is lack of feedback from the tenant companies’ perspective with respect to the value added that they receive from science parks. The objective of this study is to evaluate the services that the Barcelona Science Park offers to its tenants by gathering information from the companies currently located in the park and those that have graduated. By comparing the results obtained from the two groups of companies, incubated and graduated, we examine whether the opinions differ about their appreciation of the services that they benefited from during their stay in the Park than those currently remaining.

Most of Polish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) treat the implementation of a new product or service as too expensive, time-consuming and risky. The share of innovative industrial and service enterprises in the years 2015–2017 in the total number of these enterprises amounted to 18.5% and 10.4%, respectively. Most of these companies do not have their own R&D department. Therefore, for many of them the cooperation with innovation centres, such as technology parks or incubators would be a great opportunity to build a long-term competitive advantage. This study aims to assess the innovativeness of companies – tenants of the mentioned institutions.

Untuk menyiapkan itu maka UMMgl menekankan kepada seluruh mahasiswa untuk menjadi entrepreneur yang mandiri dan unggul, untuk menuju ke sana memang tidak mudah. Proses – proses dari kurikulum, magang, dan inkubator entrepreneur pun perlu disiapkan secara matang dan terstruktur. Menjadi wirausaha memang tidak mudah, membutuhkan mentor dan bimbingan yang tepat agar berhasil nantinya menumbuhkan jiwa kewirausahaan yang intinya adalah kemandirian pada jiwa mahasiswa UMMgl. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelaksanaan pendidikan kewirausahaan ini menggunakan metode Participatory Rural Appraisal yang melibatkan obyek menjadi subyek aktif kolaborasi. Tahapan yang dilakukan adalah 1) Rekruitmen, 2) Inkubasi, 3) Evaluasi. Hasil dari kegiatan ini didapatkan peningkatan dari 20 tenan menjadi wirausaha yang mempunyai produk untuk dikembangkan, dan 5 tenan mandiri siap mengembangkan produk bisnisnya, yaitu Bakso Bakar, Mr. Kriuk, Merchandise Online, Online Shop, dan Latte (coklat tempe).Kata kunci: wirausaha, kewirausahaan, ummgl AbstractUniversitas Muhammadiyah Magelang (UMMgl) has a vision of "Excellence in Science, Islam in Behavior" which is responsible for providing supplies to students to be independent after graduating from college. To prepare it, UMMgl emphasizes to all students to become independent and superior entrepreneurs, to get there is not easy. The processes of curriculum, internships, and entrepreneur incubators also need to be prepared carefully and structured. Being an entrepreneur is not easy, requires the right mentor and guidance so that it will succeed in fostering an entrepreneurial spirit which is essentially the independence of the soul of UMMgl students. The method used in the implementation of entrepreneurship education uses Participatory Rural Appraisal methods involving objects to be active subjects of collaboration. The steps taken are 1) Recruitment, 2) Incubation, 3) Evaluation. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a comparative study about features, services and networks offered by business incubators (BI) to encourage start-ups development in Portugal and Brazil. Recently, these countries have revealed several cases of well-developed entrepreneurial ecosystems and Brazil receive a special position on Latin America; besides comparative studies between European and Latin American countries are scarce. Design/methodology/approach – This study uses a qualitative research methodology to study the role of BI in creation and growing of start-ups in Portugal and Brazil. Findings – The results do not reveal particular differences between Brazilian and Portuguese BI, except in international profile of tenants; in Portugal, probably due the market size, most of the firms born global or intend to internationalize. Research limitations/implications – The BI results depend on the wide services provided, networking platforms and support provided by BI staff individually to their tenants. These remarks provide some clues to develop public policies suitable to entrepreneurial ecosystems. Originality/value – BI have a special role on supporting start-ups creation and growth and to provide technology transfer. They are also considered as a key element to guarantee entrepreneurial ecosystems in a regional level, this research provide some contributes based on a case study with eight interviews in Portugal and Brazil, and compare for the first time these two countries with similar culture but with different levels of development.

This paper examines the role of university business incubators (UBIs) in supporting the creation of new knowledge-based ventures. UBIs are described as effective mechanisms for overcoming weaknesses of the more traditional public incubating institutions. They offer firms a range of university-related benefits, such as access to laboratories and equipment, to scientific and technological knowledge and to networks of key contacts, and the reputation that accrues from affiliation with a university. The empirical analysis is based on the Turin Polytechnic Incubator (TPI) and on case studies of six academic spin-offs hosted at TPI. While TPI does not effectively resolve such problems as inadequate access to funding capital and the lack of management and financial skills in its tenant companies, the networking capacity of incubating programmes is seen as a key characteristic that may help new knowledge-based ventures to overcome such difficulties.

This paper reviews the national system for support of small and medium businesses in the rapidly changing environment of the Czech Republic. The major components of the support are national programmes of assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises, information and consulting services, the PHARE programme and business incubators. It is concluded that incubators can be a cost-effective instrument in the creation of new enterprises; however, most of the facilities claiming to be business incubators do not offer adequate services and business assistance to their clients, but operate only as multi-tenant buildings. Three case examples of business incubators (two successful, one not successful) are presented.

It has been widely argued that networks are critical for innovative firms. In the effort to support the growth of these firms, incubators seem to institutionalize support by having systems in place to encourage networking and help firms develop networks with other tenants and potential business allies. However, there is a lack of critical empirical investigation of the different types of networks developed by firms. This paper addresses this issue by systematically examining how firms in incubators develop their networks and what types of networks they might aim to build. The study is based on a survey with firms located at Daresbury Science and Innovation Centre in the UK. The results suggest that incubators often generalize their network support without considering that firms may develop different networks based on their needs. The results also demonstrate that the characteristics of firms do play a role in determining types of network. Science and engineering firms develop networks that differ from those of service and IT firms due to their need to access resources from other innovative firms in incubators, from the Science and Technology Facilities Council and from universities. Similarly, small firms are forced to establish internal and external networks in an attempt to compensate for their lack of resources. Overall, the findings suggest that academic theory on networks of firms in incubators needs to be more nuanced and that the networking support provided by incubators needs to be customized to the actual needs of the incubating firms.

Since the late 1980s, the business incubator model in China has been evolving—from the early traditional model that focused mainly on providing basic services, such as office space and one-stop administrative services, to an emerging value chain model (value position, value creation, value transfer and value capture), which efficiently combines the profits of an incubator with the success of its incubating tenant ventures. This article analyses the case of ‘Innovation Works’, which is one of the pioneers of the value chain model in China. It raises the following research questions: (a) how does the incubator business model evolve over time in China? (b) What differentiates the value chain business incubator model from the traditional model? (c) What are the critical elements that contribute to the success of a value chain business incubator model? Using primary data gathered through interviews, on-site visits and surveys, the study found that the incubator business model in China has been reshaping towards more complex value propositions and more efficient value chain models. The study also found that specialisation, flat organisational structure and professional management team are the critical elements that contribute to the success or efficient performance of the value chain business incubator model. This article makes significant contributions to the literature and draws policy implications for future business incubator development—both in China and in other emerging economies.

In May of 1999, the Wood Enterprise Centre Shared-use Manufacturing Facility in Quesnel, British Columbia opened its doors to the public, with the aim of job creation and economic stimulation in the forest-dependent community of the North Cariboo. By providing value-added wood producers access to the costly high-tech equipment required to be competitive in this sector, this unique facility gives young companies the opportunity to become successful without bearing the prohibitive capital costs of machine acquisition. By all accounts the facility is a success, with eighteen new jobs having been created in the region to date. This study discusses various models of shared use that forest-dependent communities could deploy. It also outlines some of the exploratory research (site visits around North America) that ultimately helped to shape the centre and the manner in which it operates. It is hoped that results of this study will be used by regional development agencies who are considering, or are in the midst of, developing and implementing a shared facility to stimulate growth in economically recessed forest communities. PurposeSeed accelerators (SAs) appear as a more advanced version of business incubators. These for-profit organizations in exchange of equity, help setting new start-ups by providing mentoring and funding during its first months. Due to their emergent nature, the impact and expectations of SAs remains largely unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to throw new light on this field by empirically assessing for the first time the performance and prospects of these organizations through a survey of 116 SAs.Design/methodology/approachA model based on the Business Incubators literature is built with four categories covering size, location, age and profitability variables, leading to two hypotheses to be tested empirically over a survey of 116 SAs.FindingsSome remarkable findings arise after implementation of both bivariate and multivariate analysis. The results confirm a higher size and performance in the US and in the oldest SAs at statistically significant levels.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is not free from limitations but the findings make a contribution to the still scarce existing literature on SAs, and provide some managerial implications to their stockholders, to investors and to entrepreneurs.Practical implicationsThe findings concerning performance indicators are especially helpful for investors, primarily concerned with the percentage return on investment factor, the period and the investment rounds needed to achieve exit. Another key issue is the SA's role as an employment seedbed. At first glance, the amount of employment, both overall and per company, might seem small given the young age of these firms. The impact of SAs on the generation of new employment is difficult to measure as it usually takes place in further stages of development of the tenant companies, the so-called scale-up process. Nonetheless, at present, the number of new companies being born is remarkable and, in terms of employment, the results are indeed promising. Our findings also offer important implications for entrepreneurs, venture investors and policy-makers. To entrepreneurs, our findings offer insight on the expectations to hold in the accelerator programs.Social implicationsFor policy-makers and would-be accelerator founders, our results support the idea shared in the literature that accelerators can be an effective entrepreneurial intervention, even in small entrepreneurial ecosystems, compared to the strongest entrepreneurial hubs (Hallen et al., 2017).Originality/valueSAs are a very recent phenomenon which is blooming all over the world, especially in developed countries. SAs are therefore considered a key agent in the prospects of any entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, no studies have so far analysed the impact and performance of this emerging instrument. This is precisely the main purpose of this paper, to offer for the first time an approximate and exploratory assessment on the impact and prospects of SAs, based on a database.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the intensity of mentoring, funding, and financial literacy simultaneously and partially on the success status of the business incubator tenant incubation process in Bali Province. This study uses primary data by distributing questionnaires to 97 business incubator tenants in Bali Province. The analysis technique used is multiple linear regression which is equipped with a classical assumption test. The results of the test analysis in this study indicate that simultaneously the intensity of mentoring, funding, and financial literacy has a positive and significant effect on the success status of the business incubator tenant incubation process in Bali Province. Partially, the intensity of mentoring and financial literacy has a positive and significant effect on the success status of the business incubator tenant incubation process in Bali Province, while partially funding has a negative and significant effect on the success status of business incubator tenants in Bali Province. The government is expected to develop superior local products from upstream to downstream as the basis for cooperative business and MSME, strengthening the synergy and orchestration of cooperative and MSME-based people's economic development with all ministries and all business stakeholders.

Coaching log is an accompaniment record recorded in a hard copy file that contains data on tenants, coaches, mentoring records, assignments from coaches to tenants, and results of previous assignments given by coaches to tenants. This hard copy coaching log file cannot be used effectively especially in seeing the development of tenants from time to time or the progress reports of tenants. To solve this problem in this study a web-based log coaching system has been developed which has tenant data management features, data coaches, making mentoring schedules, providing timetables for mentors, coaching logs by coaches, coaching logs by tenants. The system design model used in this study uses the Unified Modeling Language (UML) model, system development using the laravel framework, and testing using the blackbox testing method. Based on the results of testing all the features that are owned by this log coaching system can function properly. Purpose This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the business incubator and its impact on commercialization strategies based on incubatees’ aspirations in three business incubators in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative approach was used, which involved conducting semi-structured in-depth interviews on 14 startup owners who are tenants in 3 incubators in Indonesia. The data obtained were analyzed using a thematic analysis assisted with NVivo 12. Findings Business incubator effectiveness was found to be heavily dependent on incubatees’ satisfaction in their interactions with the incubators. Moreover, some patterns were formed from thematic analysis and used to produce three propositions. Research limitations/implications The study was conducted qualitatively using only 14 interviewees or incubatees from 3 business incubators in Indonesia. Moreover, a thematic analysis offers flexibility from basic to organizing and global themes, but, in this case, there may be a lack of deeper understanding, for example, in psychological viewpoints. Practical implications Business incubators in this study need to reevaluate their incubation process based on their incubatees’ aspirations. These have to be considered from the beginning of the process, particularly the innovation aspect. Meanwhile, policy implications were also discussed Social implications Policymakers have realized the importance of business incubators in enhancing Indonesia’s innovation and competitiveness, and this has made them encourage the establishment of some new business incubators. It is, however, important to note that most of the existing ones are simply “rubber stamp” and to improve their operations and performances, some recommendations were made. Originality/value Despite the potential importance of incubation in enhancing technopreneurship and increasing a nation’s competitiveness, little research has been conducted on incubators in Indonesia’s ability to fulfill such high expectations. This specifically means there is no information on the present and past perceptions of tenants or startups on the incubators’ performances.
