Full texts (1998) three dimensions of social capital (structural, relational and cognitive) were investigated in a business incubator located in a university science park. This thesis tries to answer five questions for the incubator context: (1) What are the antecedents of the three dimensions of social capital? (2) What are the benefits of social capital for the tenant firms? (3) How are the dimensions of social capital related to the antecedents and benefits? (4) What are the effects of being located in a university on social capital development between the firms and the host university? and (5) What is the role of the incubator management/specialists on social capital creation? The research questions were investigated in two layers: (1) Social capital development among tenant firms, and (2) Social capital development between the tenant firms and the host university. The research was designed with a multi-method approach along four steps. In the first step, the selected incubator was observed for a day. In the second stage, a pilot interview was conducted with one of the tenant firms. Next the firms were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their demographic characteristics. In the last stage, a theoretical sample of nine selected firms&rsquo
owners were interviewed. All the collected data were analyzed following the grounded theory approach (Strauss and Corbin, 1990) and seven propositions were developed to be investigated in further research.

Full textThe development of innovation is very important for economic and social growth of the National State (Hyytinen & Toivanen, 2005; Schumpeter, 1942). However, the development of innovation is an expensive and risky process, since your return is not guaranteed (Corder & Salles-Filho, 2006; Hall, 2002). Thereby obtaining financing for innovation may be hampered by traditional financial agents. On the other hand, since the goal of the state is to promote actions in the public interest for promoting economic and social development (Muller, 2003), it is justifiable for the government promotes public policies to induce transformation of the economy through innovation, implementing actions to minimize their difficulties, especially those already mentioned. However, the resources provided by the government are scarce and, therefore, are benefiting only a portion of innovative projects. So there is a more efficient allocation of resources, managers of public resources agencies need to analyze the characteristics of the innovative project, the company and the entrepreneur, to identify those most likely to succeed. Among the many features that can be addressed, this research aims to analyze: (i) Entrepreneur background; (ii) Maturity Stage of Innovative Product; and (iii) Company Relational Capital. Therefore, this study is meant to examine relationships between characteristics of the enterprise and the granting of public funding for innovation. Specifically, the survey was conducted only among incubated technology-based companies of the State of São Paulo and addressed granting of resources by the major public agencies active state, which are: Financier of Studies and Projects (FINEP), National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Support Foundation of São Paulo Research (FAPESP), e Brazilian Service of Support for Micro and Small Enterprises (SEBRAE) (SDECTI, 2013). In terms of methodology, this study frames as (i) correlational study, since you intend to show a certain relationship between independent and dependent variables; and (ii) quantitative, since cases down and classifies the relationship between variables by means of using statistical tools (Logistic Regression). The collection technique used was a survey, using questionnaires sent by email and answered by a sample of 95 companies. The main result has been that academic training, the entrepreneurial background of the component, has a positive relationship with the granting of public funds. The main contribution of this study to the consolidation of academic literature on funding for innovation is the application of micro and small businesses, since previous studies emphasize, mostly medium and large mature firms.

Incubator’s nurturing service items is the most important issue about incubator’s success. For the study on the nurturing services demand among the type of incubator tenants and the stage of incubator tenants'' development. To divide the stage of incubator tenants'' development as I: the initial stage, II: the developing product stage, III: the product to put to the test stage, IV: the market developed stage, and to classify the type of incubator tenants as I: new venture with no origin, II: new venture with hi-tech origin, III: new venture with traditional origin. The research of tenants’ need finds that information support is the most important demand, the next is legal assistance, furthermore is technology and personnel support, not of the least use is space and facilities, and a routine administrative matters, by Ridit analysis. The statistics used MANOVA and Ridit analysis test to compare the service demanding intensity of the different stage of incubator tenants'' development, and the type of incubator tenants. The tenants’ need at the initial stage are information, legal assistance, technology and personnel support, and to enhance space and facilities, and .a routine administrative matters. The tenants’ need at the developing product stage are to enhance financial affairs, and business-related services. The tenants’ need at the product to put to the test stage are to decrease the need of technology and personnel support, and to enhance administrative support, and information support. The tenants’ need at the market developed stage are to enhance technology and personnel support, and business-related services. The tenants’ need for new venture with no origin are information, legal assistance, technology and personnel support, and to enhance space and facilities, and .a routine administrative matters. The tenants’ need for new venture with hi-tech origin are to enhance technology and personnel support, and. financial affairs. The tenants’ need for new venture with traditional origin are similar with hi-tech origin, even more to enhance financial affairs. Incubator must hard to provide nurturing service of the tenants’ need. So, the primary work is known the all kinds of the tenants’ need.

The objective of this study is to confer the factors which affect the satisfaction of tenants in incubators. Through reviewing related references, we came up with three hypotheses: 1.The effect between resource degree of the hardware and the performance in tenants. 2.The effect between support degree of the software and the performance in tenants. 3.The relationship between satisfaction and the performance in tenants. The study collects empirical data from tenants in incubators. We delivered 180 questionnaires, and received 49 questionnaires. The effective sample response rate is 27.22 %. The study applies for Pearson correlation analysis, regression analysis. Results of statistical analyses provided three important conclusions as follows: 1.There are significant correlations between resource degree of the hardware and the performance in tenants. The higher degree of the hardware incubators provides, the better performance tenants show. 2.There are significant correlations between support degree of the software and the performance in tenants. The higher degree of the software incubators provides, the better performance tenants show. 3.The performance in tenants is positively related to satisfaction.

As the change both of industrial and business environment become rapid, all the enterprises have to face the pressure to readjust their business focus. Enterprises have to reexamine their cores of business model from double “E” (efficiency and effectiveness) to double “S” (scale and scope). For this, they begin to realize that only continuous innovation can help them through the keen competitions. Though innovation can bring firms with improvement in production, exploration of new markets and competitive advantages, it is not easy to obtain. Nevertheless, the core of Taiwan’s technology industry mainly comprises of small and medium enterprises, and these enterprises generally lack resources and know-how, especially in the area of research and development (R&D). This constraint limits the development of new technology and prevents s the overall integration of the industry. As a result, the pubic sector should provide guidance to these enterprises so they can improve their chance of success. Incubators are set to help start-ups to get resource that is needed to run a new business, including places, equipment, and technical and commercial supports, which can lower the risks and the costs to start a new business. It is rarely important for start-ups to accumulate their core resources. But owning to the products or the technology the start-ups trying to develop are in different life cycle, the types of the resources the start-up need can be different. Our study finds: there are no significant correlation between firm’s core resource conformations and incubators or firm’s attribute. That is to say, incubator tenants choosing an incubator not consider how the incubator can provide. We examine core resource conformations, cross-functional integrative, integrate with incubators, and environment uncertainty finds: the four factors have obvious relationship with new product development performance.

This study attempts to investigate the factors affecting the performance of Taiwan’s tenants in incubation over the 2007-2011 period by utilizing an unbalanced panel data regression involving tenants’ inputs and outputs. The empirical findings show that systematic impacts exist in different industry sectors, in different professional fields, and in different types of incubators. Therefore, the findings provide some possible suggestions to effectively elevate the performance of tenants: 1. Tenants should sign contracts with university-based incubators with longer terms. 2. Tenants in Northern Taiwan should avoid knowledge overlap effects with the university-based incubators. 3. Tenants should be aware of the structural inflexibility of the parent company in manufacturing. 4. Tenants in manufacturing and electrical machinery should avoid the interdisciplinary. 5. In the service sector, tenants owners whose are more advanced in age or highly educated performed better in incubation. 6. In the electrical machinery field, tenants should extend the length of the duration of stay. These are helpful suggestions for elevating the performance of tenants in incubation.

The study investigates the survival analysis of tenants in Taiwan’s incubator center. It includes Kplan-Meier curve(K-M curve) and Cox proportional hazard model. The data set is from China Productivity Center, and it is divided into eight subgroups according to their types. The study period is from 2007 to 2011. The most particular empirical results are as follows. The contract periods between incubator center and tenants have negative effect on tenant’s hazard rates. The tenants are new start-ups, and they will have lower hazard rates. The enterprisers are female, and the tenants will have lower hazard rates. There will have negative or positive effect on tenants’ hazard rates in different industries. Whether the tenants are cross functions or not, there will be no different. Location of incubator center is a critical determinant on tenants’ hazard rates. In our study, there have more advantages in industrial density area. Besides, developing local charm industries are the best way to decrease the tenants’ hazard rates.

ABSTRACT In recent years, it’s an urgent task to upgrade Taiwan’s industrial structure based on SME (Small and Medium Enterprise). To help the growth of entrepreneurship and small-medium enterprises, the Taiwan government takes incubator program as one of the industrial technology policy to assist the industrial upgrading and the development of start-ups. The incubator program in Taiwan was first implemented in 1996. Up to now, most tenants are technology intensive, 48% firms aimed at R&D, and most of the incubators are university-sponsored. According to innovation theory, university/R&D institution is identified as the core of regional innovation networks. In this research, we will investigate the reality of R&D Cooperation among universities, industries, and R&D institutes, and the effects of incubator program. Surveyed samples are the firms graduated or incubated at least 2 years. Analysis reveals that the technology knowledge spillover from universities/ R&D institutes is the key point, to firms. In addition, in the evaluation of incubators’ performances, we found factors that significantly affect tenants’ innovation activities including ”experts’ opinion on product innovation;” ”know-how to solve special problems; ””sparking in-house creativity;” ”the relationship of union of regional Universities and R&D Institutes;” and ”stable working environment.” Factor analysis also shows that firms expect technology innovation support more than other incubator service. To examine the effects of incubation, survey shows that incubator service do benefits tenants’ innovation activity. However, the spillover of technology knowledge from universities/R&D institutes is not a significant factor to commercialization innovation. It also shows the gap between importance of incubators’ service and real effects, and those obstacles to firms’ innovation. Incubator promotes regional innovation activity. In terms of tenants’ technology innovation networks, incubator incline to function as “marketing consult” and ”prototype test” role, but poor in “provide new conception of specific technology”. This research tried to explore the importance of incubator program in promoting regional innovation activity. In the future, government should lead more positive attitude toward industrial innovation. On the other hand, this research also shows how incubators are poor to assist tenants’ innovation activity, which reflects the defect of innovation support system. This research also identified some key factors that have impacts on tenants’ innovation capability, the results of this study can be useful information for the government to establish indicators to evaluate effects of incubator program.

Currently, the incubators are distributed island wild in Taiwan and industry network is formed. Such a network provides a diverse innovation environment for industry growth. This research discusses the motivation of forming incubate network system instead of prior study putting emphasis only on organizational concept. Meanwhile by exploring governance relationships and organizational learning mechanisms, we can evaluate the appraisal of incubators. Via understanding the motivations of firms entering incubators and keeping properly relationships among different ties, the tenants can process inter-organizational learning in formal of informal ways; so that incubators should integrate the resources from the industries, the government, the academia, and the research institutes to achieve the goal of improving incubative performance, shortening incubative time, and increasing cooperation satisfaction. For verification study, this research targets on the incubator’s tenants, and included 101 questionnaires of tenants in the analysis data. We adopt cluster analysis, discriminate analysis, MANOVA and regression for analyzing, and to investigate the following question: via exploring the motivation of the tenants entering incubators, how should the tenants do to make the performance batter through network’s inter-organizational learning formed in good governance relationships. Further, we investigate the accommodative affection between inter-organizational learning mechanisms and performance by the current managing situation of incubators. At first, the result shows when the motivation of tenants entering incubators are decreasing transaction cost, depending on key resources, and accelerating organizational learning, the tenants will tend to build high structural embeddedness; however, lower motivation relatively on decreasing transaction cost leads structural embeddedness becoming weak. While the tenants eager to accelerate organizational learning, firms will maintain both structural and relational embeddedness. Second, higher level of structural and relational embeddedness established, organizational units would prefer to maintain closely interaction and knowledge sharing in some degree of openness. Third, inter-organizational learning mechanisms do favor to the performance. Finally, well inter-organizational learning mechanisms will affect dual cooperative performance via well incubators’ currents management. As the concluding remarks, we suggested several future research issues and the implicational for incubators, tenants and continuing study.

Technology innovation is one of the power for national economy growth. For many years, European and the U.S. have set after about 2,000 the innovation incubator centers. The most are academic incubator center and has successfully making many SME (Small and Medium Enterprise). New is pushing SME to renew the incubator policy. And in 1996, set the encourage government and non-government organization to set the SME, to establish incubator center, use SME to develop foundation, encourage government and non-government organization to use the source of software and hardware. This study is aims at investigate 48 incubators and 550 tenants. The main goal is investigate on the relationship among the incubator’s nurturing service, tenant’s characteristic and nurturing performance. Incubators receiving 30 ones, and the rate of valid retrieval is 62.5%. Tenants receiving 91 ones, and the rate of valid retrieval is 16.55%. The analysis of questionnaire adopt descriptive statistic, T-Test, Analysis of Variance, Pearson Correlation Analysis, Regression Analysis etc. as the methods of statistic analysis. This research shows the incubator’s nurturing service items in supply and important perception different items: entity equipment service and administrative service. In the tenant characteristic, incubators and tenants perception different items: enterpriser attempt success and to have product authority. On the relationship between the tenant characteristic and nurturing performance, the nurturing performance is obvious connection between marking and finance characteristic. The nurturing performance is obvious influence between entity equipment service and technology service. Therefor, the incubator should be initiative understand tenant’s demand. The tenant should be initiative to contact incubator.

Most of previous research relating incubators only focuses either on incubators or tenants. It would fail to identify the perceptive differences between them. This thesis conducts a comprehensive survey on 79 academic innovation incubators and 922 tenants to investigate the perceptive differences between them. Totally, 53 valid questionnaires were collected from academic innovation incubators, with a valid return rate of 67%, and 215 valid questionnaires were collected from tenants, with a valid return rate of 23.32%. The results show that academic innovation incubators provide adequate services of human resources, technology, space and physical facilities, and they indicate services of human resources, technology, and general administration are important for their tenants. On the other hand, tenants indicate that services of human resources, law and information are more important, and they indicate academic innovation incubators provide adequate services of human resources, technology, space and physical facilities. It is also found that the biotech industry needs to access the labs in the universities, but not other major industries. IT industry needs more space and physical facilities than the rest of industries do. Suggestions to authority, incubators, tenants, and potential tenants are also made.

The study explores the relationship among entrepreneurs’ personal Conditions ( prior knowledge, social networks, risk propensity) , entrepreneurial orientation (opportunity recognition, resources acquisition ) and Venturing Performance in New Venture, Moreover, the purpose of this study is to understand incubation center between entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial performance. The sample in this study aims to the Entrepreneurs in Taichung Business Incubators Alliance. This study collected 53 data, leading to 28.34% response rate. The hierarchical regression analysis is used to examine the relationship among the variables. Empirical results show that prior knowledge, social networks and risk perception of entrepreneurs have significantly positive impact on the opportunity recognition. For some entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial performance, opportunity recognition of entrepreneurs has a significantly positive effect on entrepreneurial performance. Entrepreneurs access to resources has a significant positive impact on the venturing performance, indicating conditional support; Support services of incubation center for entrepreneurial orientation and venturing performance relationship has positive moderating effect; the more support services of incubation center, it will strengthen the relationship of entrepreneurial orientation and venturing performance . When managerial implications of this study suggested that entrepreneurs cumulate more entrepreneurial knowledge, their diverse networking will bring different resource, and must have the risk determination and vision to identify innovative technologies and unique merchandise. Therefore entrepreneurs will be able to open up a blue ocean and the service of service of incubation center for new ventures have a positive help and nurture tenant firms have expertise ability.

Some developed countries establish incubators to incubate the enterprises and solve the problems of the new enterprises. The incubator program in Taiwan is one of the series of the government policies that assists the industries in upgrading and developing. This is the crucial policy that the government encourages new small-medium enterprises. The domestic incubators emphasize more on the concepts of supply in incubators and demand in tenant, and closed systems of incubator industries. This research widely looks at the viewpoints of internal and external networks, and investigates the cooperation and the interaction among support organizations, such as tenants entering incubators, incubators and external suppliers. The tenants process inter-organizational learning through the relationship between trust and embeddedness, and integrate the resources from industries, the government, the academia, and the research institutes in order to reduce the cost and achieve innovating performance. This research targets on tenants entering incubators, and analyzes 81 questionnaires of tenants for empirical study. We adopt the methods of regression for analyzing and hierarchical regression analysis to investigate the following question: how should the tenants do to make the performance better in organizational learning through applying the relation between internal and external networks. In addition, we study the accommodative affection between organizational learning and innovating performance by the current managing situation of incubators. The outcome of the study shows that tenants will strengthen the intention of organizational learning competence, absorptive capacity and intelligence integration when internal networks of tenants entering incubators possess a good structural embeddedness relationship. While relational embeddedness only accelerates organizational learning and absorptive capacity, it does not have a remarkable influence on integration. If the external networks of the tenants entering incubators keep suppliers of high quality, the intention of learning will be increased. On the other hand, organizational learning competence, absorptive capacity and knowldege integration will be accelerated when tenants build high structural confidence. Furthermore, tenants entering incubators with organizational learning competence will increase the improving performance. Finally, the current managing situation of incubators really modulates the influence on innovating performance through organizational learning competence. At the conclusion of this research, we offer several suggestions in theory and practical use of administration implication for incubators, tenants and further study.

In recent years, lots of thesis focused on the operation performance of the innovation incubation center, but there were fewer topics about the relationships between networks and the innovation performances of the firms. Due to the lack of competitive advantages of the new firm will choose the innovation incubation center to improve their innovation capabilities, in consideration of the importance of domestic incubation mechanisms, the practice, government, and academic circles should discuss not only the innovation performance of small firms, but also should emphasize on how to improve knowledge flow through social interaction, and to improve the innovation performance. This research based on the perspective on social capital of the networks. To distinguishing from internal networks and external networks, in order to discuss the relationship of social capital and knowledge flows, examine the firm’s innovation performance through the knowledge flow. Besides, this research also inducted organizational learning competence to examine the moderating effects. The purposes of this research are four: (1) What are the content of internal networks and external networks of innovation incubation centers? (2) What roles do social capital of internal networks and external networks in innovation incubation centers play to affect its knowledge flow? (3) How do knowledge flows of incubator affect firm’s innovation performance? (4) Discussing the effects of knowledge flow and innovation performance by organization learning competence. The research proved that (1) The resource complementarity of internal network social capital actually could improve firms to absorb the knowledge and techniques from incubation center, and the firms in the central position of external network social capital also could obtain knowledge quantity and knowledge uniqueness from the cooperation and the interaction among support organizations. (2) The knowledge flow and the higher knowledge uniqueness obtained by the small firms could improve the innovation performance of the firms. (3) Organization learning competence showed positive moderate effects on the processes of organization, strategic performance of the knowledge flow and innovation performance. This research integrated the useful information of improving innovation through examinations, focused on how incubation center networks proceeded to the knowledge flow between networks through owned social capital, to address suggestions to the small firms and follow researchers, and the references of improving the innovation performance of small-medium enterprises.

Previous studies of the performance of tenant firms in incubators broadly used the financial and innovation indicators. This thesis applies balanced scorecard to investigate the expected and perceived performances change of those tenant firms in academic incubators. Questionnaires were mailed to 79 academic innovation incubator in Taiwan and 1058 tenant firms listed on the incubators’ websites. The differences of the expected and perceptive performance between academic innovation incubators and tenant firms are analyzed. The result shows that the tenant firms have higher expectation more than academic innovation incubators do, and the effects of the incubating processes from academic innovation incubators are not as expected. Moreover, the academic innovation incubators may not satisfy the tenant firms in respect to net profit margin and the number of patent applications. According to the result, six suggestions for academic innovation incubators, such as analyzing the effects of the services, and three suggestions for tenant firms, for instance, orientating the needs before cooperating with academic innovation incubators are made.

In practical operation, with the arrival of era of knowledge-based economy, a lot of domestic and international enterprises have realized the importance of knowledge assets. In academic research, the work of knowledge management is growing fast. From the literature reviewing of knowledge management, this research finds that there is more work on operational perspective than strategic perspective. Therefore, this research adopted environment-strategy-conduct and knowledge resource-based view, and combining the concept of environmental characteristics and organizational contexts, to study with the relationships among the knowledge strategy and knowledge management competence, and to examine the difference on knowledge management competence in different knowledge strategy. From the literature reviewing, the study on knowledge management mostly adopted the perspective of knowledge procedure, but this research adopts the perspective of knowledge competence. The dimension of knowledge management competence is included the four aspects: knowledge creating, spreading, accumulating and transferring. This study adopted the environmental characteristics and organizational contexts as antecedent variables, and the environmental characteristics divide into four dimensions: market competition, customer's pressure, law intervene, technology intensive, and the organizational contexts divide into two dimensions: organizational culture and organizational structure, as well as the execution of the knowledge strategy as mediating variables. This research takes the incubator’s tenant in Taiwan as the sample frames, mail 1063 questionnaires totally, retrieve 146 questionnaires effectively, and the effective sample ratio is 13.73%. To review the economical development of Taiwan over the past 50 years, small and medium-sized enterprises have created the well-known economic miracle economically. But small and medium-sized enterprises are facing the great change about inside and outside environment in recent years. In order to upgrade the technology, a lot of small and medium-sized enterprises enter into the center of Incubator. From practical operational perspective, knowledge flow is worth to study between the center of Incubator and entering enterprises. In academy, reviewing the relevant literature found that many studies on the topic of the centre of Incubator, however, the study is still rare about the relationship between the mechanism of knowledge flow and knowledge flow performance, as well as it is lack for the overall empirical research. So this study examines the relationship between the mechanism of knowledge flow and knowledge flow performance for entering enterprises of the centre of Incubator. In the aspects of knowledge flow performance, this study refers to the research of Leonard-Barton and Sinha (1993); Nonaka et al. (2000) and Kogut and Zander (1992), included two dimension of knowledge transferring performance and knowledge creating performance. The report by Bureau of Small and Medium Enterprises, MOEA in 1998 was point out that “the Research & Development of Science & Technology Small and Medium Enterprises (RDSTSMEs) was main development type of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for Taiwan’s economic development. This kind of SMEs was vulnerable during its start-up so it needs more assistance than other kinds of SMEs. For this reason, in April, 1996, the 11th meeting of “Small and Medium Business Mutual Fund Development and Management Committee approved “Guidelines for Encouraging the Establishment of Small-Medium Enterprise Incubators Centers by Public & Private Sector” and hope that can use the concept of “incubation” to help RDSTSMEs pass this dangerous period. Due to the services items were the main mechanism for successful nurturing new ventures, thus, if the cognition for services between incubator and tenant was different that it will influence the nurtured performance. Hence, the main goal of our research hope that can by way of investigate 36 incubator and 351 tenant to obtain the cognition difference between them. Then, we will use the practical view to find out the reasons, which cause the difference and try to shorten the gap between them. We find that has different view between them. These reasons which cause the difference including: 1.Incubator and government are not engaged in the survey of the degree of satisfaction yet; 2.Project manager has no the concept of different tenant which need different kind of services; 3.Because incubator is in the start-up phase so it didn’t pay much attention on this issues; 4.Incubator was insufficient in talent, capital and technology so that it can not provide the necessary services for tenant. The method which can shorten the gaps will include: 1.Government must help incubator to be engaged in the survey of degree of satisfaction; 2.Government need to assist incubator to set up the services items that incubator can not do it; 3.Governemnt must help incubator to establish its characteristics; 4.Incubator can investigate the tenant’s degree of satisfaction which now was set up in its incubator; 5.Incubator needs to select the right tenant; 6.The network-relation can make up for the insufficient in services; 7.Tenant must choose the right incubator; 8.Tenant must request the services right away when it need it.
