Full textThis thesis is concerned with the study of the spectroscopic properties of U⁴⁺ in ThBr₄. – The complete visible and infrared absorption (emission) spectra of U⁴⁺ as doping ion in pure ThBr₄, as well as the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements have been examined. At liquid – He temperature the absorption spectra consist of broad absorption bands with two edge singularities. The apparently continuous character of fluorescence lines in selective excitation experiments, and the MCD profiles suggest the existence of a continuous distribution of U⁴⁺ sites in the host crystal. – Raman scattering results indicate the existence of a displacive phase transition at Tc = 95K. – X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data show additional lines which could be indexed approximately by a tripling of the unit cell along the c̅ axis. – Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements indicate that below Tc, ThBr₄ has a displacively modulated structure, with a modulation wave vector q̅s given by: q̅s = 0. 0310 +̠ 0. 005 c̅x. – Inelastic neutron scattering leads us to understand the dynamics of the phase transition. The unique D₂d site symmetry for Th⁴⁺ (U⁴⁺) is not preserved. The complete interpretation of the change in the symmetry site of the U⁴⁺ ion may be described in terms of a local phase angle ϕ₁. The site symmetry varies continuously from D₂d (ϕ₁ = 0) to a limiting D₂ (ϕ₁ = π/2) symmetry. A parametric analysis of the U⁴⁺ energy levels in D₂d and limiting D₂ sites has been presented. In conclusion this study led us to give a complete interpretation of the optical properties of an ion embedded in an incommensurate structure

Full textWe describe the realization of the radio-frequency sections of a pulsed and computerized N. Q. R. Spectrometer, the design of which is derived from a system existing at the Laboratory. The performances were improved and the design made with a view to increase the versatility of the N. Q. R. Research Group facilities. The all solid-state spectrometer can be operated from a few hundred hertz up to 60 MHz. Circuits are wide-band except for the tank circuit and a tunable pass-band circuit provided to reduce the amplified noise level; as a result adjustments when operating the system are minimized and phase shift problems are eliminated. The rejection ratio of the analogic gate is increased and still 60 db at 80 MHz. The transmitting power stage, also transistorized, can deliver one hundred watts up to 60 MHz time 15 µs. The receiver pass-band is 80 MHz and its recovery when the high-Q tank circuit is not connected. The spectrometer has been used for investigating the incommensurate phase of ß-ThBr4 below 96 K. As compared with previous measurements made with a SRO spectrometer of poor re solution as line shape studies are considered, this series of investigations brings new pieces of information about the actual shape of the broad bromine N. Q. R. Line observed in the incommensurate phase below 96 K. In the range of temperature investigated so far (77-96 K), the line remains quite symmetrical with respect to its center frequency suggesting that the modulation is of the sine plane wave type. Investigation of the relaxation time, T1, shows a strong relaxation near the phase transition temperature quite probably related to the soft mode condensation at the transition temperature

Full text(Ce,Sr)WO4 tungstates were synthezised using the EDTA citrate method. For the first time, a ternary tungstate with cerium and strontium was synthezised. The structure is a lacunar scheelite one, with as much as 35% cerium substituted on the A site of ABO4, leading to a formula Sr1/2Ce5/14□1/7WO4. Advanced structural characterization performed with X rays diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy showed a reduction in symetry, with a I-4 space group instead of I41/a, with smaller cell parametrs and AO8 polyhedra distortions. Incommensurate modulations of the structure were shown to be limited to nanodomains, 10-20 nm in size, and partial ordering of cations and vacancies were evidenced. The catalytic efficiency of the ternary compound for hydrogen production through methane conversion was investigated and compared to those of binary tungstates. Partial oxydation leading to hydrogen production is realised in a given temperature and CH4 concentration range. The electrical conduction of this new compound, with a weak activation energy, favors this partial oxydation. La conduction électrique dans ce nouveau composé, avec une faible énergie d’activation, favorise cette oxydation du méthane. A menbrane reactor prototyp was conceived and built

Full textThis thesis deals with the determination of the structure of the low temperature modulated phases at normal pressure of the organic quasi-one dimens10nal conductors TTF-TCNO and TSF-TCNO. This structural study by X ray diffraction techniques, leads us to express the displacement scheme of the Peierls distortions in lowest temperature modulated phase of TTF-TCNO ("locking phase") in terms of inter and intra molecular displacement modes. We show the prominence of the translation components over the liberation components of the displacements. These results reveal also an important intramolecular deformation of the TCNO molecule. Such a displacive behaviour is explained using considerations of the molecular orbitals related to the charge density wave (CDW) on the two types of chains, and the stacking configuration of the molecules inside the conducting chains. This displacement scheme allows to determine the structure of the CDW in the "locking phase". We show that the first order transition at 38 K which leads to the "locking phase", is associated to a modulation of the ampl1tude and the phase of the CDW on the TTF chains and a modulation of the phase of the cow on the TCNO chains. A simple theoretical model base on the coulombic interactions between the nearest chains, enables to explain the higher stability of the structure of the CDW determined experimentally, with respect to the structure of the previous phase ("Sliding phase"). This model shows that this transition corresponds to a change of the 1nteraction mode between the CDW m the direction of the axes, and yiels phases for each component of the modulation, in good agreement with those obtained experimentally. Finally we propose an interpretation of the "locking mechanism" for the lowest temperature phase at the special value qa = 0. 3a*

Full textThe lifetimes of radiative levels of tetravalent uranium in the incommensurate phase of thorium tetrahalides have been measured as a function of different parameters: site symmetry, temperature and concentration. The incommensurate phase of thorium tetrabromide and tetrachloride is characterized by a continuous distribution of site symmetries induced by a continuous and weak displacement of the halides around the thorium (uranium) ions. At low temperature, 4. 2 K, the lifetime variation as a function of excited classes of symmetry is governed by the radiative process probability as well as the energy transfer between uranium ions in different sites. At higher temperature, a model based on a Boltzmann equilibrium between closed energy levels is able to reproduce the experimental lifetime variation as a function of the temperature, for a given class of symmetry. For the variation of lifetime as a function of uranium ions concentrations, at high dilution and in the case of U4+ : ThBr4, there is a competition between the energy transfer and thermal population of excited states

Full textCrystalline p-polyphenyls exhibit structural phase transitions associated to a change of the mean molecular conformation. They result from competition between intra and intermolecular interactions. Pressure increases the relative strength of intermolecular interactions: it has therefore drastic effects on the structural phase transitions. The incommensurate phase II of biphenyl has a four dimensional order parameter (n=4). Lt is characterized by the appearance of four satellites inside the first Brillouin zone of the high temperature phase, called “phase I” The modulation wave is associated to the torsion of the molecule. Till now, direct observation (by inelastic neutron scattering) of specific excitations of incommensurate phases (phasons and amplitudons) has only been achieved in a few "n=2" incommensurate systems, which are less complex than biphenyl phase II. But pressure lowers the temperature range of existence of phase II, which gave us the opportunity to study its phasons and amplitudons at very low temperature (T=JK), where they are weil resolved. We have observed three propagating modes of low damping and we have studied the evolution with pressure of their frequencies and dispersion curves from 1. 05 to 1. 8 kbar (Pc lI 1. 85 kbar). The comparison between these results and the same ones concerning the soft mode which drives the Hl transition in phase 1, allows us, in the scope of the Ginzburg-Landau theory, to identify the three modes observed in phase Il (one of which is doubly degenerate} as its phasons and amplitudons. So we have characterized the phasons and amplitudons of an"n=4" incommensurate system. Phase Il of biphenyl, which is a four ray star incommensurate system, could present a monodomain or a two domain structure. The comparison between the inelastic intensities of its phasons and amplitudons shows that it seems to have a two domain structure. The high temperature phase of deuterated p-terphenyl is called phase 1. Crystalline p-terphenyl has two low temperature phases: phases II and III. The triple point is at: Tt = 71. 5 K and Pt= 3550 bars. Below Pt, one should observe the I-II and II-III transitions, and above Pt, the II-III transit ion. Phase Ill exists only under pressure. We have determined its super-structure Bragg peak position and studied the II-III transition which is first order with an hysteresis. The I -II transition is of the order-disorder type at atmospheric pressure. Within the mode! of competing intra and intermolecular interactions, one predicts a changeover with pressure from the order-disorder regime towards a displacive one. Lndeed, we established that under pressure the transition is driven by an underdamped soft mode which frequency decreases as the transition point cornes nearer. The I-III transition is driven by the same soft mode. Weil, this mode is principally related to a twisting of the molecule: in phase Ill, a molecule of p-terphenyl probably has the same torsional conformation as in phase II

Full textAfter a review of the theory of NQR and of factors that relate to it, the various kinds of spectrometers used to study Nitrogen-14 and Bromine NQR at 4. 2 K are described. A delayed double resonance experiment in s-triazine, where the relaxation times are long, allowed the ѵ+ and ѵ- in this substance lines to be paired. It was also possible to observe emission signals at the ѵ- lines. Complete NQR spectra of Cyanuric chloride and melamine were obtained by the observation of two new lines and nine new lines, respectively, at 4. 2 K. A Bromine NQR study of ThBr₄ was carried out at 4. 2 K by the use of a half-wavelength transmission line connecting the r. F. Coil in the cryostat to the superregenerative spectrometer. Thus, we were able to observe at this temperature the incommensurate phase which was already known to exist at higher temperature

Full textOne of the most unconventional electronic states in high transition temperature cuprate superconductors is the pseudogap state. In the temperature versus doping phase diagram, the pseudogap state straddles across the antiferromagnetic (AF) state near half filling and the superconducting (SC) dome on the hole doped side above the transition temperature Tc. The relationship between the pseudogap state and these two well known states - the AF state and the SC state is believed to be very important for understanding superconductivity and the emergent quantum electronic matter in doped Mott insulators. The pseudogap is characterized by the emergence of a soft gap in the single-particle excitation spectrum in the normal state in the temperature range between Tc and a characteristic temperature T*, i.e. Tc < T < T*. The most puzzling feature of the pseudogap is the nodal-antinodal dichotomy. Observed by ARPES in momentum space, the Fermi surface is gapped out in the antinodal region leaving a Fermi arc of gapless excitations near the nodes. Whether the pseudogap is an incoherent superconducting gap (onegap scenario) or it is a different gap governed by other mechanisms, other than superconductivity, (two-gap scenario) is still under debate. In this thesis I study the particle-particle channel and the particle-hole channel of the valence bond fluctuations away from half filling. Based on a strong-coupling analysis of the t-J model, I argue that the superexchange interaction J induced incommensurate bond centered density wave order is the driving mechanism for the pseudogap state. Low energy density of states (DOS) are eliminated by multiple incommensurate scatterings in the antinodal region at the Fermi level. I show that the interplay between the incommensurate bond centered d-wave density wave instability and the intrinsic electronic inhomogeneity in real cuprate materials is responsible for the observed pseudogap phenomena. Utilizing the spatially unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation, I show that the off-stoichiometric doping induced electrostatic disorder pins the low-energy d-wave bond density fluctuations, resulting in a VBG phase. The antinodal Fermi surface (FS) sections are gapped out, giving rise to a genuine normal state Fermi arc. The length of the Fermi arc shrinks with underdoping below the temperature T* determined by thermal filling of the antinodal pseudogap. Below Tc, the d-wave superconducting gap due to singlet pairing coexists and competes with the VBG pseudogap. The spatial, momentum, temperature and doping dependence of these two gaps are consistent with recent ARPES and STM observations in underdoped and chemically substituted cuprates. The temperature versus doping phase diagram captures the salient properties of the pseudogap phenomena and provides theoretical support for the two-gap scenario. In addition to resolving the complexities of the quantum electronic states in hole-doped cuprates, my unified theory elucidates the important role of the interplay between the strong electronic correlation and the intrinsic electronic disorder in doped transition metal oxides

Full textThis is a study of the "memory effect" which is found in the modulated, incommensurate phase of the insulator thiourea. This effect is the sign of a set of mobile defects, which can become ordered according to the spatial period of the modulation (via defect-modulation coupling). In return, the set of defects, once ordered, can lock in the modulation period. This memory effect appears to be a general property of all modulated structures. The dielectric susceptibility and linear, optic, birefringency are coupled to the modulation order parameter, and enable one to study the memory effect in thiourea. We paid particular attention to the marking and relaxation processes of the memory effect
