Internet access has become an indicator of a country’s socio-economic status in the Information Society. Libraries of higher education institutions support the parent institutions’ objective to produce graduates able to function in this society. Consequently, the Web, the most popular part of the Internet, has become ubiquitous in reference services. This study investigates the impact of the Internet on reference services by exploring the following areas: user Internet access and training in the library, use and integration of the Internet as an information tool in reference services and the Internet training and knowledge of reference librarians. An electronic survey was done using the Web and e-mail to distribute the questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into six sections, and consisted of multi-choice answers with an open-ended question at the end of each section inviting further comments. The target population was the heads of reference services at large libraries and the directors at smaller libraries of the 36 higher education institutions in South Africa. Their e-mail addresses were obtained from the library or parent institutions’ Web sites. A total of 90 potential respondents were e-mailed and 26 responded, representing 19 institutions and yielding a low response rate of 29%. Low response rates are however, typical of electronic surveys. A total of eight reference librarians at two institutions in the Western Cape were interviewed, representing both a historically disadvantaged institution (HDI) and a historically advantaged institution (HAI), and a technikon and university library. The interviews were structured and consisted of mostly open-ended questions. The interviews lasted about an hour and were tape-recorded. The results showed that all responding libraries have Internet access and all but one provided access to their users. On average, users have had Internet access for three and a half years. User Internet training tended to be on a one-to-one basis at the point-of-use. On average, reference librarians have had Internet access for five years. The majority of librarians have attended formal Internet training programmes. However, the librarians interviewed considered these to be introductory and gained the skills and knowledge by actual use and from colleagues. Librarians reported that the reference process took longer, that user search behaviour had changed and expectations had increased. While the majority of libraries had Web sites, only a small number of librarians had individual pages that they updated and maintained. The majority of libraries provided electronic reference via e-mail and the library Web site, but these are characterised by low usage. Finally, libraries tended to offer both end-user and intermediary searching to online databases. The study concluded, amongst others: that libraries lacked adequate computer facilities and consequently cannot provide optimal Internet access to students, and that librarians have integrated the Internet as an information tool but that libraries have not yet taken full advantage of what the Internet offers. The study recommends: that the bandwidth and number of student computer facilities be increased in libraries and that this problem be addressed at national government level, that libraries develop electronic reference as a core service, and that librarians increase their Internet and online instruction efforts by using e-mail, Web tutorials and virtual classrooms to reach more students.

The web portal of the Institute of Communication and Image sought to achieve the following objectives: Offer a multimedia service that disseminates all the information related to the Institute, contributing to its institutional consolidation; to constitute a tool for disseminating academic work and a dynamic medium that allows the campus to position itself as an outstanding reference for content on communication; support in a transversal way the teaching, extension and internal management tasks of the Institute; generate segmented spaces (channels) towards the different types of potential audience of the portal, both within the university community and among external navigators; define an orderly information architecture with different forms of access, emphasizing usability and the use of international standards for web development; increase the presence of academic publications in electronic format (magazines, research, articles, working documents, papers, among others); reinforce the contingent information area (news and highlights) with reports, interviews, activities agenda, extension notices, offer of courses, products and services; orient graphic design in relation to the image that the University and the Institute wish to project, while interpreting the diversity of concepts that coexist within them; provide expedited access to the information resources and online services currently offered by our university; use a dynamic content management model, with flexible support, and compatible with the future institutional portal of the University of Chile; serve as a platform for setting up future courses and workshops in the form of distance education via the internet (e-learning).

Apresenta-se investigação, teoricamente orientada e empiricamente suportada, explorando e desenvolvendo possíveis relações entre usos da biblioteca pública, nas vertentes do uso de recursos documentais, do espaço e da Internet, por um lado, e, por outro, as suas representações. Recorrendo a uma abordagem qualitativa, aplicou-se o método de caso alargado, de Michael Burawoy, à Biblioteca Almeida Garrett na cidade do Porto. As ferramentas de recolha de informação foram entrevistas semiestruturadas, em profundidade, análise de desenhos de crianças, observação, análise documental de textos oficiais e fotografia. Entrevistaram-se vários leitores e leitoras, incluindo não-utilizadores de Internet, responsáveis, técnicos e pessoal de atendimento da biblioteca, assim como o arquitecto. Como resultados intermédios são apresentados vários perfis de utilizadores e é avançada uma explicação para a génese e funcionamento dum sistema tácito de regulação de condutas, sobretudo no que ao ruído diz respeito. Como resultado final conclui-se que não há nenhum «impacte» claramente disruptivo induzido pela Internet nas representações recolhidas e analisadas, colocadas em relação com as alterações recentemente registadas nas práticas leiturais: algumas imagens representacionais há em que a Internet reforça a imagem tradicional de biblioteca como organização enciclopédica, como conjunto de recursos diversificados; outras há em que, se o seu uso contribuirá, por um lado, para esse reforço, por outro, atualiza e democratiza essa representação pela abertura a práticas não eruditas e pela propiciação de usos recreativos, ou ainda de usos comunicacionais e instrumentais baseados na Internet; em situações mais extremas, quando biblioteca e Internet se usam como termos sinónimos da gramática representacional, (...).

The present dissertation is about Subject Gateways a kind of Internet access service created to serve the academic community’s information needs, characterized for selecting web resources accordingly with quality criteria, describing information with structured metadata languages and to give access through keywords and particularly browsing structure’s development. These services are analyzed from the point of view of processes and ways of organizing information. The five initial Gateways (SOSIG, HUMBUL, EEVL, PSIGATE, BIOME) of the RDN (Resource Discovery Network) are specifically analyzed regarding to used metadata languages and ways of organizing information. This analysis aims to know the process of organizing information, and also evaluate their quality in relation to target audience expectation about systems of organizing bibliographic information of this kind. Within a specifically theoretical framework witch defines the characteristics and aims of any bibliographic information system as well there metadata languages, this analyze was developed in two different ways: from the conceptual point of view, through the study of all cataloguing rules of the services, and from the practical point of view, using a significant sample of each services descriptions and their browsing structures. In both cases the services were analyzed and evaluated accordingly with the criteria defined from the proposed theoretical framework These services use a model based in traditional processes of information organization, with several adjustments in the sense of descriptive simplification and adaptation to the described resources, with special concerns about subject access and representation. The metadata quality about subject as well as the global quality of resources description allows that these services meet some of main user’s expectations. The problems are those related with finding all the documents about the same Author, all documents belonging to the same Work, all documents belonging to the same Version, and, at last, to be able to Navigate in the bibliographic universe.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with social tagging used for indexing of library holdings. Social tagging is the process by which users add metadata in form of free keywords to resources. The emerging pool of tags is called folksonomy. This paper describes how folksonomies work and illustrates potential features of social tagging in libraries. It becomes clear that folksonomies cannot keep up with traditional cataloguing methods in some respects, but allow various new possibilities. Therefore social tagging cannot replace subject indexing, but may complement it. This is proved by examples of public and academic libraries which already apply social tagging.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates online supplements for schoolbooks from a publisher's perspective. Online supplements can be characterised as content provided by publishers which is available via Internet and has an apparent connection to a certain printed schoolbook. They can range from mere hypertext documents and downloadable files to online training units. The aim of this thesis is to examine if the online supplements currently available exploit the full potential of Internet technologies. A further goal is to gain insight into the plans of school publishers regarding free access versus charging for access to their online materials. The approach chosen includes a survey which for practical reasons is restricted to online supplements for schoolbooks which are certified for use in mathematics classes in secondary education in Germany or Austria. The online supplements are evaluated using a set of categories designed by the author, namely embedding in the website, structuring, help function, cost, target group, area of application, source and technical basis. Additionally, interviews with representatives from four school publishing companies and one web platform for online supplements are conducted. The questions cover issues regarding their motives as well as their plans and experiences with online supplements. The findings reveal that online supplements are predominantly targeted at teachers rather than pupils and at the time fail to take advantage of the full potential of the Internet. They still rely on structure and functionality of print, while exploiting specific assets of the Internet. Access is mainly free of charge at present, but publishers are increasingly adding paid content, which is distributed over joint online platforms.

The present Master’s Thesis deals with information literacy in academic libraries. Following the description of theoretic principles, development and current state of discussion in the US are compared to the situation in Germany, drawing on important surveys, strategic papers and models. The main distinctions between both countries are the different historic initial conditions and the varying general frameworks. The current practice of information literacy in university libraries and libraries of universities of applied sciences in the state of Northrhine- Westphalia is explored within the empiric part by website analysis. It shows that manifold activities to enhance information literacy can be identified, whereas the usability of the websites can be improved. The final part oft the survey outlines possibilities for further improvement of general information literacy in Germany.

Scientific journals are currently one of the channels of communication science that scientists regularly use to socialize their results. In the last decade, scientific journals, digital repositories and online catalogs have provided open access to all its contents. In addition have been designed protocols for the exchange of metadata as an efficient solution to interoperability between these systems. OAI-PMH is an interoperability framework based on metadata harvesting, one of the most widely used today. However, this protocol is designed to ensure interoperability at a syntactic level, with very limited options for querying over data providers. This thesis presents a semantic interoperability framework based on the linked data principles for bibliographic metadata disseminated by the OAI-PMH protocol. Linked data refers to a set of principles and best practices for publishing and linking structured data on the web. The framework is composed by of two major components: (1) methodological guidelines for publishing bibliographic metadata as linked data and (2) a platform that implements the proposed methodological guidelines. The methodological guidelines follow an iterative and incremental approach. The proposed platform automates the activities proposed in the methodological guidelines. Both methodological guidelines and platform were applied in a case study for publishing bibliographic metadata as linked data. A sample of nine Cuban journals that support the OAI-PMH protocol was selected. The results obtained demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework.

By comparing the WWW hypermedia environment with traditional media, the WWW medium has the characteristics of interactivity and personalized profile at the same time. It can combine elements from a variety of traditional media, yet is more than the sum of the parts. On the other words, the new interactive media can combines properties of mass(impersonal) and face-to-face(personal) communication channels and transmits dynamic and static message to customer. Thus, advertising strategy on the WWW must account for both short-term (as broadcast media provide relatively short-term exposure with low information content) and long-term (as print media provide relatively long-term exposure with high information content) exposure.By using the laboratory experimentation, the author can conduct different characteristics of interactivity and personalized profile into different experimental groups and get more clear relationship between the independent variables and dependent variables. The results suggest that:1. If the advertising (Home Pages) includes the characteristics of interactivity and personalized profile, the performance of advertising will be better than that do not. Especially, the recall of message increased obviously.2. The higher involvement with experimental product will appear better performance of advertising than lower involvement.3. The performance of advertising on WWW is affected by the involvement-with-products and the need-for-cognition.Therefore, if we can track the behavior of customers and record the mental constructs and characteristics of customers, we will have the abilities to arrange different advertising exposure for every customer(one- to-one marketing). The WWW medium with the abilities of information technology, hypermedia, and database marketing can reach the function of one-to-one marketing through the characteristics of interactivity and personalized profile. And it would have the chance to get better performance of advertising.

Certain human communication traits have historically been identified as gender-specific. The purpose of this paper is to collect and compare the most widely-indexed, gender-specific World Wide Web sites from five given interest areas, and to then determine which, if any, traditionally gender-based communication patterns were present within these sites. Using qualitative and quantitative analysis, this study found that in many cases: * Female-oriented sites in this study emphasized communality * stressed sharing personal experience * resisted authoritative language * encouraged emotional interaction # Male-oriented sites in this study relied on authoritative language # emphasized privacy # stressed professionalism # minimized personal interaction . Although these sites represent only a miniscule "snap shot" of communication on the Web, they seemed to suggest that the core of traditionally identified gender-specific communication traits is being actively transplanted into Cyberspace.

The topic of the thesis is bibliographic description of electronic online resources in foreign and Czech cataloguing practise. The first part of the thesis analyzes the development of description of electronic online resources in 90th of the 20th Century along with an introduction of important foreign projects which contributed to this development. The paper analyzes in detail all areas of bibliographic description according to ISBD(ER) and the fields of MARC 21 format used for description of electronic online resources. The thesis also evaluates cataloguing practise of the National library of the Czech Republic within WebArchiv project and building of subject gateways. The heart of the thesis is detailed analyze of illustrating examples of description of electronic online resources including cataloguing records with comments clarifying some difficult questions of desciption of this resources.

The growth of worldwide internet usage has given rise to the phenomenon of 'open movements'. These are communities that evolve based around the collaborative production of common resources, to which free access is typically provided to all who choose to use it. Such communities and the resources they create have developed rapidly over the past 10-20 years and are the cause for major scholarly interest. This study takes the step of applying the lens of Persuasive Design to the study of open movements in order to show how site design can play a role in increasing participant activity and longevity. For this purpose it looks at two 'open movement' resources, the collaboratively edited map OpenStreetMap and The Pirate Bay, a tracker for torrents uploaded by the le-sharing community. The analysis is two-fold: first, it uses quantitative data of user participation in the systems, derived from downloads of system-generated user-histories to generate an overall picture of user-participation in each of the systems. Second, it applies a set of heuristics to evaluate the persuasive design of the systems in question. It then connects the results of the quantitative analysis with the heuristic analysis in order to see how the persuasive design of the systems impact on user participation. This thesis will primarily be of value to researchers of online collaboration, although it may also be of interest to researchers in the field of Persuasive Design.

This dissertation is focused on new email user interfaces that may improve awareness and handling of task-laden messages in the inbox. The practical motivation for this research was to help email users process messages more effectively.Two user studies were conducted to test hypothesized benefits of the new visual representations and to examine the effects of different levels of selected cognitive abilities on task-laden message handling performance. Task performance on both of the new visual interfaces was faster than on the more traditional textual interfaces, but only when finding date-related information. Selected cognitive abilities were found to impact different dependent measures. Working memory and flexibility of closure had effects on performance time, while visual memory and working memory had effects on user interactions involving manipulation of the visual field, such as scrolling and sorting.A field study was conducted to examine email practices related to handling messages that refer to pending tasks. Individual differences in message handling style were observed, with one group of users transferring such messages out of their email programs to other applications (e.g., calendars), while the other group kept prospective messages in email and used the inbox as a reminder of future events.This research contributes to understanding interactions among cognitive abilities, user interfaces and tasks. These interactions are essential for developing two types of interface: inclusive interfaces that work for users with a wide range of cognitive abilities, and personalized and adaptive interfaces that are fitted to individual characteristics.Two novel graphical user interfaces were designed to facilitate monitoring and retrieval of prospective information from email messages. The TaskView interface displayed task-laden messages on a two-dimensional grid (with time on the horizontal axis). The WebTaskMail interface retained the two-dimensional grid, but extended the representation of pending tasks (added distinction between events and to-do's with deadlines), a vertical date reading line, and more space for email message headers.

Web users increasingly have a hard time finding relevant material because traditional full text search engines hit the wall. One solution to overcome these limits is to implement an exploratory search by using semantic web technologies. "Linked Data" describes a "concept" of publishing data through semantic markup of the information and its relations. As a result software can "understand" the meaning of the described information. Due to its structure, bibliographic information lends itself to being semantically rehashed and published as Linked Data. Libraries expect a better visibility in the web and therefore a better use of their services. Currently there are few web applications that use bibliographically linked data. This paper analyses in detail Linked Data web applications and discusses the aspects of data integration, the architecture of Linked Data web applications as well as visualization techniques to implement exploratory searches. For the purpose of this thesis, a prototype of a web application demonstrates which bibliographic information in the Linked Data can be found.

Agroecology, recognized by the UN as a production system that allows farmers to be sustainable through time, still lacks supporting tools that allows information to be organized and disseminated so it can be replicated and adopted nowadays. In Ecuador the Colectivo Agroecologico a space for coordination that manages to bring together multiple networks, organizations, associations and groups of farmers and consumers working to promote agroecology and food sovereignty, have the need of a tool that manage content generated within the organization. This paper proposes the creation of a platform for knowledge management and maintenance of agroecological online communities, under the standards proposed by the Agricultural Information Management Standards within the Office of Extension, Research and Knowledge Exchange FAO, within which was held a volunteer for three months. As result of volunteering and following the checklist for creating digital repositories proposed by the IMARK, the criteria that the platform require were established, subsequently a hierarchical analysis was performed with the help of experts that had experience in four content management systems; WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and a Drupal customization known as AgriDrupal. This analysis suggests that the best option for creating the platform is AgriDrupal with 30.64% followed by WordPress 27.9%, Drupal 22.7% and Joomla with 18.76%. The creation of the platform starts from a clean installation of AgriDrupal inside of a commercial server, the name of the platform is: Plataforma de Libre Acceso a Saberes Agroecológicos Sur (P.L.A.S.A. Sur). Finally, the paper describes the installation process and explains the general operation of the platform interface by screen captures.

The paper Fundamental methodologies and tools for the employment of webometric analyses defines the most important rules to keep in mind before performing webometric analyses. The paper deals with the two basic elements, that constitutes the foundation for webometric analyses: the documents being analysed, and the tools that are applied for the data collection. The concepts of a citation theory and a link theory are discussed through a study of the current litterature. Different methodologies for uncovering motivations for making references in scientific articles are reviewed and discussed. A methodology for uncovering motivations for making links on webpages is proposed and applied on six researchers' websites at the Royal School of Library and Information Science in Denmark, and on all the institutes at the same institution and at selected institutes at The Technical University of Denmark. The paper further contains a review on the linktopology of the Internet and the current status for the tools available for data collection. Finally, alternative possible tools for applying webometric analyses are proposed. The alternative tools are the Researchindex invented by Lawrence and Giles (Lawrence, Bollacker & Giles, 1999b; Giles, Bollacker & Lawrence, 1998), Kleinberg's HITS algorithm employed in the Clever search engine (The Clever Project, n.d.; Kleinberg, 1998), Proposals for possible extensions to the HTTP protocol to facilitate the collection and navigation of backlink information in the world wide web made by Chakrabarti, Gibson and McCurley (Chakrabarti, Gibson & McCurley, 1999c) and finally Link Agent, a program we have developed for this paper. The program makes it possible to uncover the reciprocal linking webpages, that exist in relation to the outgoing links from a chosen webpage.

Web 2.0, the social, interactive and user-oriented web, is an integral component of current web applications. In the context of Library 2.0-motivated service developments, some libraries already have implemented such features in their local online library catalogues. However, many library associations and library service centres that provide union catalogues seem to be reluctant to keep pace with these developments. This thesis gives an overview of existing union catalogues in the German-speaking language area that already use Web 2.0 features. Furthermore, it identifies opportunities and risks when implementing Web 2.0 concepts in a union catalogue based on a market-analysis and in-depth interviews with experts for library systems and union catalogues. The empirical study of this thesis also contains an evaluation of the existing union catalogue of the umbrella organisation of public libraries in Austria, called "Büchereiverband Österreichs" (BVÖ). The result of this thesis includes that providers of union catalogues are aware of the relevance of the new technologies as additional features to improve the usability of union catalogues and to enrich bibliographic data with supplementary content. Still, the implementation of web 2.0 services seems to be hesitant within the German-speaking countries. The main task of union catalogues is still to provide easy and fast access to bibliographic data but web 2.0 concepts will be an important add-on in the future.

A theoretically orientated and empirically supported research is presented, exploring and developing possible relations between uses of the public library, according to the dimensions of the usage of documentary resources, of space and of the Internet, on one hand, and its representations, on the other. Resorting to a qualitative approach, Michael Burawoy's extended case method was applied to the Library Almeida Garret in the city of Porto. The tools used to gather information were in-depth semi-structured interviews, analysis of children's drawings, observation, documentary analysis of official texts and photography. Several readers were interviewed, including non Internet-users, as well as managers, technical and front-office staff, and the architect. As intermediate results, several users' profiles are presented and an explanation is advanced for the genesis and functioning of a tacit system for the regulation of conducts, especially as far as noise is concerned. As a final result, I conclude that there is no clearly disruptive "impact" induced by the Internet from the collected and analysed representations, which are related to recently registered changes in the reading practices: for some representational images the Internet reinforces the traditional image of the library as an encyclopaedic organization, as a set of diversified resources; for others, Internet use will contribute, on one hand, to their reinforcement, while, on the other hand, it updates and democratizes these representations through an opening to non-learned practices and by the affordance of recreational, communication or, yet, instrumental uses based on the Internet; in more extreme situations, when library and Internet are used as synonyms in the representational grammar, without this technology a library would, naturally, not make sense; but, in the opposite extreme, its popular and intensive use is not thought as being compatible with the image of an institution devoted to culture, here understood as learned culture, the terms being almost antonymic. Changes in the frequency and usage of the public library, are else associated, in a clear manner, to the emergence of new types of readers reflecting changes in the urban social composition of the city and in the ways of urban living. So I conclude that the library without Internet would not be so public, or that it would not exist at all in some people's views, and that the library finds a reinforcement as to what is, and may keep on being, precisely in the public provision of Internet access and in open, free, and, when necessary, personally supported, Internet services.

This research allowed us to analyze the websites of 30 university libraries in the province of Santa Fe (BUSF), with the aim of describing the situation in 2013 in terms of its overall architecture, content, and information system recovery and library services offered through these pages. An observation guide that took into account the variables and indicators developed for this purpose was used. The analysis shows that the web pages of BUSF are in a period of transition to digital and still need to work on certain aspects such as web accessibility, the development of new services through the web and the gradual adaptation to the "participatory web". Suggestions for improving the web pages are proposed and it is considered that this work is a possible starting point for the planning of such improvements.

To the creation of this model a literature review is made on the current context of our society from the perspective of its characterization as a society of information and knowledge; it is created a synthesis of the Internet tools that fits in the profile which supports the academic, scientific, professional and cultural aspects of the University of Antioquia population (networked knowledge management); finally, by assessing similar research projects, it proposes a specific model at the University of Antioquia which might be useful as well for other universities considering the scarcity of research on this area. The creation of this model is a first stage, it will continue with its actual application, and accordingly to its results for the decision making in both, the technological aspects (Informational Infrastructure) and the training aspect (Informational Infostructure), and thus, to cope with the issues of the digital divide and the informational iliteracy, in order to reach a better informational level that helps to diminish the underdevelopment of Colombia (Informatioanl Sociostructure) through adequate governmental and institutional policies.

As a consequence of the developments in communication and cooperation facilities in the electronic environment, getting access to information quickly has become the main objective of information services. Hence, theses that fulfil an important function in the provision of information services in general have gained a new dimension as well: theses that are accessible full-text through the Internet have been used in a much more effective way. Projects on electronic theses and dissertations (e-theses and e-dissertations) that started in mid-1990s have reached an important level today. In order for theses to be made accessible more effectively via the Internet in Turkey, the components such as infrastructure, storage, archiving, access management and indexing should be studied. In this study, we first review the statwe-of-the-art of current information services with regards to theses and then, in light of examples worldwide, develop a conceptual model that might be used to set up a Turkish Electronic Theses Center (TETC). The conceptual model covers, in three steps, the overall process from preparation of the theses in electronic environments to the submission of them to TETC, from indexing and archiving of theses at TETC to making their full-texts available to users via the Internet by using a detailed flow-chart and summarizes the requirements that should be satisfied in order to establish the Turkish Electronic Theses Center.

The effect of the information overload verified after the advent of the Web, in the 90s, has become a concern for researchers as to the capability of the users in the process of acquisition and utilization of relevant and useful contents. Scientific communication, in its informal as well as in its formal aspect, represented mainly by scientific periodicals, faces the same problem, since it also suffers with the influence of the advancements caused by the information and communication technologies. Distinctively, a growth in the scientific electronic periodical headings is verified, as a consequence of the agility in the electronic publication process, what leads to the increase of the bibliographical production. This way, the use of filters is becoming more and more required, what allows a selective dissemination of contents for specialized users, according to their real needs. Inserted in this context, the present research focusses on the study of the potential of an emergent technology: the RSS (Rich Site Summary, RDF Site Summary or even Really Simple Syndication), intended to the aggregation and distribution of digital contents. As an inquisitive study, the main objective was to perceive the possible applications of this resource in the scope of scientific communication, especially as to the aspect of dissemination. Additionally, a comment about the advantages and barriers of the technology is made, as well as the ways by which formats RSS have been employed in the academic field. Besides the analysis of pertinent literature, a study of informational behavior of a group of Information Science researchers involved with the process of scientific communication in order to test the viability of the proposal technology. Complementing the research, the creation of a prototype of an aggregation of thematic contents service is described as to illustrate the functionalities of the technology. The obtained results indicate a fertile and propitious field for implantation of the RSS in the studied context, suggesting an increase of the visibility of scientific information, besides the integration with other technological resources, such as databases, digital libraries and repositories.

With the advancement of Internet technology, establishing library websites has become an important issue. However, an Internet presence is not enough unless these websites are effective in achieving the objectives for which they were established. With respect to the Iraqi state university central libraries, a quick review of their websites shows that they have many shortcomings in providing the services and features that are expected by ordinary patrons. This study has two major goals: (1) to determine the current state of Iraqi university library websites and (2) to articulate a model to guide the development of these sites by examining the sources of the issues facing these library websites’ development. The study also considers the issues that face the development of an Iraqi-specific model for electronic educational resources and the ways in which these resources can be more useful. Measuring and evaluating Iraqi university libraries’ websites are the foci of this dissertation, in which the entire Iraqi national education system of state universities is considered as a single case study using a mixed-methods approach. The study sample includes the entire population of the library websites of the Iraqi state universities that are identified from the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research website. The study consists of three data-gathering exercises: a survey of library directors, interviews with library directors (or a representative of the administration), and a questionnaire for Iraqi LIS faculty members. This study analyzes and measures the Iraqi universities’ libraries’ websites by studying the services and features they currently offer and by comparing them with the core components of international academic library websites which have been identified in the professional literature. The list of core components was presented to the Iraqi library and information science (LIS) faculty members to determine what they believe fits the unique needs of Iraqi users. Then, these core components are compared with the components offered by each of the Iraqi university libraries’ websites to find out how many of the services and features are currently provided and what prevents these websites from offering the missing services and features. In general, the Iraqi state university library websites are surprisingly deficient in the services and features they provide. Some of these websites offer a fair number of services, according to the list of services and features collected from the literature. However, other libraries’ websites provide very limited services and features. These disparities are affected by several factors, such as whether the library directors have LIS credentials and whether the library staff has LIS credentials and computer skills. Other Iraqi state university library websites need improvement in terms of the quality of their services and features as well as the quantity of these services and features from the perspective of their patrons. The study concludes with a suggested model for the Iraqi academic library websites’ services and features. Study conclusions further suggest that the Ministry should verify the information offered through its website, correct some of the data about the state universities, and unify the official data provided for the public in all official channels. Finally, the study suggests a future research study of Iraqi state university libraries’ website usability.

The increasing usage of the mobile web imposes new requirements on discovery tools of libraries. Therefore the North Rhine-Westphalian Library Center (hbz) sees the need of a mobile version of the hbz library portal "Digitale Bibliothek (DigiBib)" for the use by smartphones and tablet computers. The purpose of this master thesis is to identify the demands on a mobile version of the DigiBib with regard to functionality and content and particular emphasis on usability. The paper determines the current state of research concerning mobile web, mobile usability and mobile library applications. Furthermore, a quantitative survey was conducted with DigiBib users. The results show that a mobile DigiBib would be used predominantly by Android or iOS smartphones. The most important use case is the known item search, closely followed by the subject search. A single search box as well as multiple search boxes should be provided. Important usability requirements are the reduction of text input, which can be achieved through default and automatic completion of search terms as well as possibilities of data export. The availability check should contain a site-specific localization of libraries possessing the desired title. Also interlibrary loan is relevant for the mobile use of the DigiBib. Less important are links to databases and e-journals. Due to limited resources and in order to create platform independence, the mobile DigiBib should be developed as a web application.

This thesis reflects on how libraries and related organizations, their collections and services can be described in a structured, machine-readable way. It aims at assisting practitioners in enriching library websites with structured, machine-readable, RDF-compliant markup (RDFa). The reflections result from experiences made developing the Linked Open Data service lobid.org which led to the realization that the decentral curation of organizational information brings significant benefits compared to central directories. To this aim it is investigated by example which informations can be found on library websites to be enriched with structured, machine-readable markup. Based on the results, a comprehensive general model for describing libraries and related organisations is developped. Existing approaches of describing libraries and related organisations in a structured, standardized manner (the German projects Sigelverzeichnis and Deutsche Bibliotheksstatistik as well as WorldCat Registry) are described and common practices of description are worked out. RDF vocabularies are presented which could be useful following existing practices of description. Finally, a concrete proposal is made for the description of libraries and related organisations, exemplarily carried out with two libraries.

The objective of this thesis is a section design of biographical data from a digital inter-operable library named VESTIGIUM. With this aim, we carried out an in-depth study on the regulation, technology and current projects concerning the information of persons, which we here refer to as biographical data or authority control. We therefore analysed the current level of name authority control, right from the first conceptualisations back in the 19th century, and the usual settings in which this type of data appears: libraries, archives and museums (LAM). We then analysed the current aspects of the new universe in which these abstract entities operate, since they can appear in multiple environments for different uses throughout the World Wide Web. This is the reason why the analysis becomes complex and limited, since authority records may be treated differently according to the context and use. The working method consists of both literature review techniques and fieldwork which aim to find information systems that operate with authority control on the internet as well as cases of use of linked data (LD). The creation of a regulatory framework in terms of name authority data in the scope of archives –International Standard Archival Authority Record For Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (ISAAR (CPF)) and Encoded Archival Context – Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (EAC-CPF)-, libraries and information science –Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD), Guidelines for Authority Records and References (GARR), MARC 21 Format for Authority Data, Resource Description and Access (RDA), MARCXML, Metadata Authorities Description Schema (MADS)-, and in the implementation world of recommendations for metadata from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) –Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI), Resource Description Framework (RDF), Friend to Friend (FOAF), RELATIONSHIP, and BIO- have enabled us to create a prototype that acts as grounds for the inter-operability of biographical data, ensuring visibility at international level. Likewise, the formats of export defined according to the rules and standards of the application actually enable data exchange, taking into account that the use of technologies from the Semantic Web allows the integration of data originating from various systems. The data model proposed in author´s table with contextual information complies with the four basic principles defined by Berners Lee for the publication of linked data. The benefits achieved by using the semantic regulation on the table are the following: improvements in the process of obtaining links between entities semantically similar or related, vocabularies of values, groups of metadata elements or data groups that originate from different sources which in turn also provide this kind of data.

The present essay is a research work about the scientific production in Digital Preservation through the use of the Web of Science database. A state of the art is established in which the most important milestones in Digital Preservation are collected, as well as the content analysis of definitions and their influence in Spain. The scientific production is analysed by treating the scientific articles retrieved from the Web of Science. This analysis is based on the application of bibliometric laws, the Impact Factor, the SJR, the index-h and trends according to language, country, institutions, research areas, document typology, abstract and descriptors. Finally, a series of conclusions are drawn together with a prospective for future work related to this study.

Regarding the research a survey has been applied to the libriaries which belong to the medical faculties throughout the country's state and private universities. In this survey under the following headlines data is obtained; variations of e-resources that used, library staff's background, published document's status, which e-resources mostly preferred and which qualifications of e-resources mostly stressed in making the preferance. After having the survey results, the outcome of the survey has been evaluated and inferences drawn. Following the first survey one year later second successive survey has been applied, recent results of the second survey has been comparetively evaluated and additional inferences drawn regarding the changes occured within one year.

Abstract:
This thesis is about chat services as part of electronic reference services in university libraries in Germany. Though the object of investigation is the chat service, the central question is if the introducition of this innovative service can be seen as an example for the innovative ability of public administration in Germany in general. To answer this question, different aspects are adressed, e.g. the acceptance of employees for innovations or the extent of hierarchical structures in the decision making processes of the libraries. The findings are mainly based on interviews that have been carried out with the manangement of the libraries investigated. The conclusion of the thesis is that such a piece of work certainly cannot give a final answer to such a question, but that if all public instiutions in Germany would be as innovative as the libraries that have been under examination it would be possible to refer to the German public sector as "innovative". The problem is that it is very questionable if libraries with their special responsibilities and conditions can be representative for the public sector as a whole.

Leaving the simplicity of the architecture of the current Web, the Semantic Web grew little, it didn't have significant qualitative movement. Abstract:
This doctoral thesis is about the possibility to put archival data (for example archival descriptions, authority records and so on) directly into semantic web, particularly using a technology called “Topic Maps”. Topic Maps are an ISO standard quite similar to RDF. To show that it's possible to express archival data directly into semantic web, I translated all archival standards (such ISAD, ISAAR, ISDIAH, ISDF) into Topic Maps Constraint Language schemas. TMCL is a standard of the Topic Maps family. What it's important is that you can declare constraints and inference rules to ensure that a topic map holding archival data is compliant to archival standards. So, once shown that is possible expressing archival data into semantic web, which is the main advantage? I think that we can find three advantages in this approach: you can build flexible and extensible information systems you can create import and export as linked data you can merge data of different areas (for example you can merge archival authority records and librarian authority records) For that aim I also created crosswalks between different standards. For example I mapped FRAD with ISAAR. For import and export I created some XSL-T stylesheets to convert EAC and EAD to Topic Maps and I released them as opensource on google code. Lastly I proposed a strong idea to develop flexible information systems (for example a software to manage a digital library or an archival information system such the archival system for national archives). In those systems data wouldn't be stored in a database, but directly in RDF triples or, why not, in a topic map. This allows to extend or change the system without a database change (so you can add or change a descriptive field without touch the database).
