Abstract:
This paper aims to reconstruct the alluvial activity for the Lilas river, the second-largest catchment of Euboea Island (Central Western Aegean Sea), for approximately the last three and a half millennia. The middle reaches (Gides basin) exhibit several historical alluvial terraces that were first recognised in the 1980s but have remained poorly studied, resulting in uncertain chronological control of palaeofluvial activity. In order to reconstruct the past fluvial dynamics of the Lilas river, a ca. 2.5 m thick stratigraphic profile has been investigated for granulometry and magnetic parameters. Absolute dating of the sediments was possible by applying Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL). The results reveal: (i) two coarse-grained aggradational episodes dated from the Mycenaean/Early Iron Age and the Roman periods, respectively, (ii) a phase of rapid fine-grained vertical accretion corresponding to the Late Byzantine to early Venetian periods, (iii) potential evidence for final alluvial deposition from the Little Ice Age/Ottoman period, and (iv) two major incision episodes inferred from Ancient Greek times and most of the Byzantine period. Based on the published core material, the paper also evaluates the direct impacts of the Late Holocene alluviation recorded mid-stream on the fluvial system situated downstream in the deltaic area. Sediment sourcing is attempted based on the magnetic properties of the catchment lithology and of alluvium collected upstream along the main stream bed. Finally, the present paper discusses the possible links between Late Holocene hydroclimatic oscillations and the aggradational/incision phases revealed in the Gides basin. Correlations are attempted with regional palaeoclimate records obtained for the Aegean. In addition to climatic variability, anthropogenic factors are considered: specific land use for agricultural purposes, in particular during the Mycenaean period, the Roman and the Late Byzantine/Early Venetian periods, might have enhanced sediment deposition. Archaeological information and pollen records were also evaluated to reconstruct regional land-use patterns and possible impacts on soil accumulation over the last 3.5 millennia.

Abstract:
The main aim of this paper is to test the use of multi-temporal differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) techniques as a tool for geological and geomorphological surveys in urban areas, where anthropogenic features often completely obliterate landforms and surficial deposits. In the last two decades, multi-temporal DInSAR techniques have been extensively applied to many topics of Geosciences, especially in geohazard analysis and risks assessment, but few attempts have been made in using differential subsidence for geological and geomorphological mapping. With this aim, interferometric data of an urbanized sector of the Venetian-Friulian Plain were considered. The data derive by permanent scatterers InSAR processing of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by ERS 1/2, ENVISAT, COSMO SKY-Med and Sentinel-1 missions from 1992 to 2017. The obtained velocity maps identify, with high accuracy, the border of a fluvial incised valley formed after the last glacial maximum (LGM) and filled by unconsolidated Holocene deposits. These consist of lagoon and fluvial sediments that are affected by a much higher subsidence than the surrounding LGM deposits forming the external plain. Displacement time-series of localized sectors inside the post-LGM incision allowed the causes of vertical movements to be explored, which consist of the consolidation of recent deposits, due to the loading of new structures and infrastructures, and the exploitation of the shallow phreatic aquifer.

Abstract:
Background: Adiantum capillus-veneris L. (Family: Pteridaceae) is a well-known safe medicinal herb used in traditional and modern medicine due to its beneficial pharmacological properties. Current study aimed to compile a review on phytochemicals, pharmacological properties and toxicological effects of this plant. Methods: An incisive search was conducted through electronic scientific databases including PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library using keyword ‘Adiantum capillus-veneris’. All related in vivo, in vitro, human (English papers), were selected from the beginning up to 1st January 2019. All letters, conference papers, papers dealing with genetics, agriculture, and pure phytochemistry of the herb were excluded. Results: A. capillus veneris revealed various pharmacological activities including effects on remodeling of lung alveolar epithelial cells in hypoxic environment, anti-toxicity properties in liver and testes, anti-hyperglycemic, and wound healing effects in diabetic or non-diabetic patients, protection against damage to fibroblasts via free radicals, activity against testosterone-induced alopecia, anticonvulsant, depressant, analgesic and anti-nociceptive activities, as well as effects on urinary output, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antilithiatic, hypothyroidism regulatory, anti-cancer, antidiarrheal and antispasmodic, anti-asthmatic and anti-histaminic, and enzyme inhibition (in Alzheimer’s, diabetes and skin disorders) activities. Conclusion: This plant can be used as a natural potent and safe agent to alleviate numerous medical symptoms and diseases due to its useful pharmacological properties. Thus, further researches are needed in order to compile the clinical effects of this plant via human studies.

La tesi si propone di delineare e analizzare il processo di riaffermazione dell’acquaforte come linguaggio autonomo e originale a Venezia tra la fine dell’Ottocento e il primo Novecento. Lo studio è qui affrontato prendendo in esame diverse esperienze: la presenza in laguna dal 1879 e l’opera grafica di James McNeill Whistler e degli incisori americani e inglesi come tramite dell’Etching Revival europeo e di un genere di acquaforte che ha per oggetto Venezia; la ricostruzione storica dell’insegnamento delle tecniche calcografiche negli Istituti di Belle Arti nell’Italia post-unitaria, con riferimento all’istituzione veneziana dalla soppressione della Scuola di Incisione nel 1875 alla sua riapertura come Scuola Libera nel 1912 con Emanuele Brugnoli (Bologna 1859 – Venezia 1944), docente e incisore, cui si propone una biografia, un primo catalogo e l’analisi della sua opera grafica.

Il presente lavoro si prefissa lo scopo di indagare i rapporti tra arti ed editoria in Veneto, dal Barocco al Neoclassicismo e di tracciare una storia dell’evoluzione della letteratura illustrata di argomento numismatico, prendendo in esame gli aspetti artistici della produzione, analizzando il contribuito degli artisti (inventori, disegnatori e incisori), dei committenti e degli autori, nei territori della Serenissima. Grazie all’analisi diretta delle opere a stampa, alla lettura delle fonti e allo studio dei carteggi sei e settecenteschi si è riusciti a delineare le forme dell’interesse del collezionismo antiquario veneto per le raccolte di monete e medaglie. Sono stati schedati più di novanta volumi, tra cui si ricordano trattati di numismatica, repertori di ritratti, storie medaglistiche di sovrani, pontefici e dogi e soprattutto cataloghi delle collezioni numismatiche venete. Tra questi ultimi si ricordano i cataloghi di Charles Patin e di Lodovico Moscardo nel Seicento, e nel secolo successivo di Lorenzo Patarol, Antonio Capello, dei Tiepolo, di Scipione Maffei, di Jacopo Muselli, Onorio Arrigoni, Anton Maria Zanetti e Giammaria Mazzuchelli solo per ricordare i più famosi. L’attenzione si è poi soffermata su due casi interessanti: quello della raccolta di medaglie encomiastiche della famiglia Barbarigo, pubblicate nei Numismata virorum illustrium ex Barbadica gente del 1732, opera in folio riccamente illustrata finalizzata a eternare le memorie della nobile stirpe; quello di un progetto incompiuto e rimasto inedito, che risale alla metà del Settecento, e cioè il manoscritto di Giovanni Andrea Giovanelli intitolato Medaglie degli uomini illustri spettanti per lo più allo stato viniziano, che si proponeva di redigere una “storia metallica” di Venezia, riletta attraverso le medaglie dei suoi più illustri protagonisti.

This dissertation is a monography about the engraver and businessman Joseph Wagner. He was born in Bregenz at the beginning of the 18th Century, and after twenty years spent studying and working in München, Bologna, London and Paris, he decided, in 1739, to move to Venice, where, in collaboration with his teacher and friend, the painter Jacopo Amigoni, he established the "Calcografia Wagner", the most important venetian printshop of the Eighteenth Century. This dissertation consists of an essay where Wagner's life and works have been accurately discussed and an important catalogue of the prints engraved by Wagner and by his pupils (Francesco Bartolozzi, Fabio Berardi, Giovanni Volpato, Giuliano Giampiccoli, Antonio Capellan).
L’incisore Joseph Wagner nacque tra il 1704 e il 1707 a Bregenz, nell’odierna Austria. Dopo un primo periodo passato a Monaco di Baviera, dove conobbe il maestro e amico Jacopo Amigoni e durante il quale frequentò la corte dell’elettore Max Emanuel von Wittlesbach, nel 1729 si recò a Bologna per completare la sua formazione. Passati tre anni nella città felsinea, si trasferì a Londra, dove aprì una bottega di stampe in società con Amigoni, incidendo su rame i ritratti e gli altri dipinti che il pittore veneziano andava eseguendo per l’aristocrazia inglese e per importanti personaggi stranieri. Conclusasi l’esperienza d’oltremanica, nel 1739, l’austriaco decise di trasferirsi a Venezia, dove fondò, sempre in collaborazione con Amigoni, la Calcografia Wagner, che divenne in breve tempo il più importante centro di produzione e diffusione di stampe della Serenissima. Presso la bottega di Wagner si formarono e collaborarono i più talentosi artisti calcografi attivi nel diciottesimo secolo a Venezia, come Francesco Bartolozzi, Fabio Berardi, Giuliano Giampiccoli, Antonio Capellan e Giovanni Volpato. Dai torchi della bottega situata in Merceria San Zulian, uscirono centinaia di incisioni, nelle quali non solo si trovano rappresentate tutte le varie componenti della cultura figurativa lagunare del periodo con importanti aperture verso scuole pittoriche italiane e estere. L’alto livello tecnico che caratterizzava questa produzione portò il Senato veneziano a concedere a Wagner, nel 1750, un privilegio privativo su ogni stampa licenziata dalla sua calcografia. Oltre a dirigere il lavoro dei suoi collaboratori e a incidere in prima persona per il suo negozio, Wagner, diventato sin da subito un personaggio di spicco dell’ambiente artistico veneziano, fu chiamato a collaborare ad alcune delle più celebri imprese calcografiche del secolo come Delle Antiche Statue Greche e Romane, le Vedute delle ville e d'altri luoghi della Toscana, Le Pitture di Pellegrino Tibaldi e Niccolò Abati, il Museum Florentinum e il Recueil d'estampes d'apres les plus celebres tableaux de la Galerie Royale de Dresde, a testimonianza di come egli venisse considerato uno degli incisori più abili attivi in circolazione. Wagner si spense nella sua casa a san Zulian nel 1786, lasciando in eredità la calcografia alfiglio Angelo, che continuò a dirigerla fino alla definitiva chiusura, avvenuta nel 1835.

La presente tesi si propone di analizzare dapprima la nascita della bottega di una delle più importanti dinastie di incisori fiamminga, quella dei Sadeler, i quali da Anversa trasferirono la loro attività a Venezia, portandosi dietro un ampio bagaglio culturale, nonché una notevole maestria nell’arte incisoria, pur rimanendo sempre fedeli alla tradizione nordica. La loro menzione nella storiografia locale veneziana, da parte di personaggi come Ridolfi o Boschini, sono testimonianza della notorietà che questi forestieri raggiunsero in laguna, almeno fino al declino che li travolse nell’anno 1620 a seguito della morte di Justus Sadeler. Intramontabile, tuttavia, permane la loro arte, alimentata da soggetti che derivavano da artisti veneziani o della terraferma lagunare, tanto da venire ricordati come i maggiori interpreti di Jacopo Bassano, dal quale trassero numerose stampe. La seconda parte dell’elaborato, sviluppato a partire dagli studi effettuati da Isabella de Ramaix, si concentra sulle incisioni di traduzione e riproduzione eseguite da Johan I, Raphael I e Aegidius II, fornendo un catalogo che racchiude qui, per la prima volta, tutte quelle incisioni che prendono a modello tele dipinte, pale d’altare o disegni di artisti veneti, confrontati con la stampa derivante.

Alessandro Longhi (1733-1813) is the most important venetian portraitist of the second half of the eighteenth century: he worked for the members of the patrician society, the class of "cittadini originari" (original citizens) and the emerging middle class. Thi dissertation is a monographic study about the artist, who was a famous painter and also an etcher. The PhD thesys contains the complete catalogue of his works.

Abstract:
This book is a collection of the proceedings of the study seminar held in Verona on 14 November 2003. This was the occasion for the presentation of the results of archive research performed by young researchers on the Jewish presence in numerous cities and smaller towns of the Venetian hinterland in the fifteenth century (Vicenza, Verona, Treviso, Feltre, and the minor centres of the Polesine and Verona and Vicenza territory). The various themes that are developed though attentive and documented analysis include: the autonomous initiative of the civic communities in the relation with the Jewish moneylenders and the attitude of Venice, divided between protection and the anti-Jewish tensions that were widespread among the lagoon nobility; the encounter and dialectic between the Ashkenazi and Italian components in the communities settled within the cities and hamlets of Veneto; the difference of the social and cultural climate between the first and second half of the fifteenth century, marked by incisive Franciscan preaching and attempts at expulsion from the cities; a look 'from the inside' which opens up the role of women in the economic life of the Jewish communities. Over twenty years after the convention on 'The Jews and Venice' promoted by the Fondazione Cini, these contributions illustrate the revival of study and the ever-present need for comparison and exchange on the issue of the Jewish presence in Italy.
