Abstract:
This study has investigated what therapists experience is specific in the treatment process, in the alliance creation and how therapists were affected by affects in meeting with children and adolescents aged 4 to 18 years who were exposed for incest. Five licensed psychologists with experience from child and adolescent psychiatry were interviewed. Thematic analysis was used in data processing. The result showed that therapists underlined a lack of structure and protection in treatment process as well as need for limits in the alliance creation with children exposed for incest. Effects that often emerged from the therapists were negative effects that led to sadness and contempt. The results also showed that the therapists requested guidelines and care programs specifically aimed for children and adolescent who are exposed for incest. Research is needed to produce evidence-based treatment methods that can create guidelines for therapists in the field.More research is needed focusing on how therapists are affected by affects that occur in treatment with child and adolescent who are exposed for incest.

Abstract:
The problem of incest is beginning to receive a recognition and research attention long overdue. Becoming more evident is the prevalence and far reaching effects of incest. Currently, little distinction is made between the treatment approach for males and females, yet research indicates differences between the two sexes. This study explores possible differences between male and female incest victims in (1) their moral ethic, (2) their self-definition, (3) the basis from which they felt compelled to comply with the incestuous abuse, (4) the reasons they believed the sexual abuse was right or wrong, (5) the reasons for telling someone or keeping the incest a secret, (6) how they decided whether or not they made the right choice, (7) the manner in which they have changed since the abuse began, (8) the content and degree of their own guilt and/or lowered esteem, and (9) the ideas they have of changes which could have prevented the abuse.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the presentation of incest in selected texts in the Metamorphoses of Ovid and in the tragedies Phaedra and Oedipus Rex of Seneca. Previous scholarship has discussed incest in Roman literature from various perspectives, especially those of social history and literary criticism. This work offers for the first time a detailed study of the incest episodes in Ovid and Seneca, taken as a distinct group, and discusses questions relating to the main general themes, and, especially, the psychological and ethical dimensions of incest. It examines these topics through a close reading of key passages from the texts, taken in the context of the overall character of these literary works as well the broader context of Roman thinking about incest. The thesis identifies shared features in the treatment of incest in Ovid and Seneca as well as defining salient differences between them in these respects. It also considers whether there is anything distinctive in the presentation of incest in these authors when compared to the presentation of intense and problematic passions in these authors. The discussion brings out certain general features of incest in Ovid and Seneca and places these features in the broader context of ancient thinking about incest in Roman culture. The discussion highlights the fact that incest is seen by Ovid and Seneca as a type of erotic passion; this is partly linked with the importance given by these authors to the psychological and ethical dimensions of incest. Both Ovid and Seneca focus especially on exploring and trying to explain the nature of the psychological motivation to commit incest. This study also highlights salient differences between Ovid and Seneca in their interpretation of incest and explains these by reference to possible literary or philosophical influences and the distinctive poetic and intellectual projects of Ovid and Seneca. The most important point of difference between Seneca and Ovid in their treatment of incest consists in their approach to the moral status of incest. Seneca's presentation is strongly moralistic (though combined with a profound interest in the psychological roots of incest), while Ovid's approach is usually sympathetic to the incestuous lovers and is sometimes subversive of conventional ethics, especially through its treatment of the manipulation of names

Olsen, Thomas Grant. "Novel incest: Negotiating narrative paradox." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/289116.

Full text
Abstract:
Novel Incest: Negotiating Narrative Paradox, investigates how representations of incest disrupt not only family relationships but narrative conventions as well. The conventions governing a narrative's structural movement from beginning to end are upset in ways that often mimic the destruction of family lineage that incest causes. Each narrative instance of incest marks reconsideration not only of Western kinship systems and, more recently, the discourse of bourgeois family structures, but also of specific aspects of the rhetoric of fiction. This history of family and narrative disruption is sketched in my analysis of such seemingly disparate texts as Daniel Defoe's Moll Flanders; Ford Madox Ford's The Good Soldier; John Barth's novels and non-fiction, including The End of the Road, The Floating Opera, The Sot-Weed Factor, Giles Goat-Boy, Lost in the Funhouse, The Friday Book, Further Fridays, LETTERS, Sabbatical, The Tidewater Tales, The Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor, and Once Upon a Time ; David Lynch's films, including The Alphabet, The Grandmother, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, and Wild at Heart, and the pornographic film series Taboo I--XVIII . My analysis focuses on author- and reader-centered interpretations and includes both formal and thematic analysis. Psychoanalytic and deconstructive reading strategies are employed to investigate the intersections formed between narrative, rhetoric, and desire. The common thread connecting these texts is their unraveling of conventions in order to restructure the possibilities for narrative fiction.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. A. (Clinical Psychology)) --University of the North, 2001
This study is an investigation into the sexual attitudes of incest abuse perpetrators in the Northern Province and attitudes towards their victims (South Africa). Forty-two convicted male incest abuse perpetrators and forty-two professional males nonperpetrators (as control group) participated in the study. The Hanson Sex Attitude Questionnaire was administered to both incest abuse perpetrators and professional males ' nonperpetrator (as control group) to compar':' their attitudes. The questionnaire includes: Sexual Entitle ment scale, Sexy-Children scale, Frustration scale, Affair scale, Sex/ Affection-Confusion scale. and Sexual-Harm scale. A quantitative research approach was followed in the study. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the responses. Compared to the control group, the incest abuse perpetrators showed deviant negative attitudes in all the scales : (a) endorsing attitudes supportive to sexua l en title ment, (b) perceiving children to be sexually attractive, (c) being sexually frustrated in their life, (d) confusing sex with affection, (e) minimizing the harm caused by sexual abuse of childre n, and (t) accepting extra-marital affairs. Thus the attitudes of incest abuse perpetrators are significantly unfavorable to the victims. The researcher recommends psychological intervention for the perpetrators to help them adjust to their societal expectations. More job opportunities should be created in the province.

De, Kock Yvonne. "A Jungian formulation of incest as revealed in a clinical case study of an incest perpetrator." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17353.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the present study is to provide a psychological understanding of the issues pertinent to the perpetration of father-daughter incest. An analysis of incest in the context of Jungian theory provides the theoretical basis. To elucidate the unconscious meaning of incest, the relationship between the incest impulse, symbolic incest and actual incest is examined. It is argued that actual incest constitutes a gross distortion of the individuation process and, due to its regressive component, a defence against total psychic extinction. It is, at the same time, a plea for rebirth. What emerges from the theoretical analysis is that the essential motivation for sexual union with an adolescent daughter unconsciously represents an attempt at integrating the anima in her positive, nurturant and 'desirable' aspect. A clinical case study is then presented in which these themes are elucidated and discussed. It is concluded that the understanding of actual incest should be located in a symbolic/developmental framework and that the unconscious meaning of incest has implications for psychological, moral and legal definitions.

Kim, Shlomit. "Incest and suicide attempt in adolescence." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27289.

Full text
Abstract:
Research regarding incest victims who attempted suicide in adolescence has received little attention although incest is considered as one of the most destructive forms of sexual abuse; and the rate of suicide attempts in adolescence has been on the rise. This study employs an exploratory approach, investigating four female adolescents, aged 15-19, who experienced both, incestuous relationships in the past and suicide attempt in adolescence. Using an open-ended questionnaire, the subjects were interviewed and the recorded responses were transcribed and analyzed, using Glaser and Strauss' 'constant comparative method of analysis'. The conceptual findings indicate that the incest victims have gone through a process comprising three stages: i) becoming a victim, ii) escalation of problems, and iii) the healing process. The transition from one stage to another entailed change in the victims' lives. These stages included a number of categories and properties with their types, dimensions and conditions. The data suggest that incest is associated with suicide attempt in adolescence thus, incest victims should be considered a high risk group regarding suicidal behaviour in addition to the other sequels of incest. The conceptual categories and the themes that emerged from the analysis have implications for social-work practice, policy and further research.

Diplacidi, Jenny. "Gothic incest: transgression and counter-hegemony." Thesis, University of Kent, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.591918.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I will analyze representations of incest in the Gothic from 1764-1847 and argue that the genre's critical genealogy, beginning with its contemporary reception, has viewed the Gothic as divided into a male tradition or its female counter, and subsequently informed understandings of incest as having distinct meanings produced by their presence in works designated as male or female. Although feminist criticism from the 1970s onwards has demonstrated that women writers articulated subversive views in the Gothic, such analyses have relied on psychological and sociological theories of incest that frequently reproduce gendered di visions and fai l comprehensively to address the incest thematic. It is instead essential to do away with the genre's gendered bifurcation and employ a broad methodological framework that applies the insights in recent work by anthropologists, feminist, social, and queer theorists, geneticists, and legal and social historians to specific incestuous configurations. In so doing, I argue that the genre's complex depictions and disruptions of eighteenth-century ideologies of gender and sexuality are revealed through incestuous desires, threats, violence and transgressions. This thesis is comprised of five chapters that explore the social, sexual and legal anxieties underlying representations of incest in different family relationships in the Gothic and contextualizes these accounts within analytic lenses suited to the particular kinship bond. It examines the ability of father-daughter incest to offer female sexual agel]cy and to breakdown the exchange of women, and investigates the potential for equality in _sibling relationships that troubled contemporary ideas of desire and laws as ,inherent~y-natural or-unnatural. It explores the sexual threats of uncles towards nieces that literalize the female body's status as property, and how cousin marriage negotiated the changing status of family and the conflict between individual desires and obligation to the family as state. It analyzes how mother-son incest exposes the inadequacy of availab le gender and sexual ideologies to account for female desire, agency and aggression. Through these analyses I argue that Gothic writers use the incest convention in order to reveal the arbitrary legal, economic and social limitations on behaviour that are enforced by heteronormative culture and offer alternative models of family, sexuality and desire that counter the hegemony.

Abstract:
Contemporary analysis of Wuthering Heights necessitates a re-appraisal in light of advancements in the study of incest in non-literary fields such as history, anthropology, and especially psychology. A modern reading suggests that an unconscious incest taboo impeded Heathcliff and Cathy's expectation of normal sexual union and led them to seek union after death. John Milton's Paradise Lost provides a paradigm by which to examine the consequences of incest from two perspectives: that of incest as a metaphor for evil, as represented in Heathcliff; that of incest as symbolic of pre-Lapsarian innocence, as represented in Cathy. The tragic consequences of Heathcliff and Cathy's incestuous fixation are resolved by the socially-condoned marriage of Hareton and Catherine, which illuminates Bronte's belief in the Miltonic theme that good inevitably triumphs over evil.

This research is based upon my professional experience as a psychologist of a Specialized Social Service Reference Centre – SSSRC – which offers psychosocial assistance to children and adolescents victims of violence, located in a city in the interior of Paraná State. Having this experience in mind, the present theme refers to incest cases among siblings, children or adolescents. According to psychoanalysis, incestuous desire is present in each individual from a young age; however, the interdiction of incest is an important factor for the structuring of the psyche, especially for the establishment of the superego, which concerns the process of internalization of social rules, making it possible to live in society. Based on this presumption it is believed that incestuous experiences could take place in a concrete reality, not only on a fantasy level, configuring into abusive situations. This study utilized a psychoanalysis based research, adapted to the context which does not correspond to a conventional clinic, denominated extramural, which has the objective of identifying the family-affective conditions in which emerge incestuous scenes among siblings and to describe the family structure which supports them. Four families were interviewed, with a total of sixteen participants. The information obtained through open interviews with those in charge of the parental care of the children and/or adolescents who had an incestuous form of relationship with their siblings, a diagnostic family interview with all the members of the family and individually... Abstract:
The objective of the present study was to characterize the affectional bonds of families affected by incestuous relationships. The study population consisted of five families, in which children of the female sex had been abused by the father or stepfather, attending a psychosocial care service (Projeto Sentinela) for children and adolescents suffering sexual abuse, affiliated to a state reference center for children and adolescents exposed to violence (Centro de ReferÃncia de AtenÃÃo à CrianÃa e ao Adolescente VÃtimas de ViolÃncia, Secretaria de AÃÃo Social do Governo do Estado do CearÃ). Victims were seven years old or over. A sociometric test was employed surveying social structures through choices and rejections observed within the social group. The test provided information on sociometric group structure, individual social status as well as negative and positive affectional bonds. Our findings show that victims suffered from lowered self-esteem and perception deficit, that mothers are attributed a high social status within the group, that victims are in good social standing in the group though unaware of the fact, and that aggressors are viewed by the familiy as rejectees and, if left unassisted, a source of tension and threat to the overall group balance. The affectional bonds observed varied according to family characteristics, time and cultural and social context, suggesting that incestuous behavior may be associated with such factors and should not be analyzed from the psychological perspective alone. The dysfunctional relationships observed in incestuous families point to the need for deconstructing the common belief that incest is the fault of mothers and victims and that aggressors are necessarily perverse. Aggressors should be included in interventions in consideration of their psychological distress and affectional relationships within the group. It considers that the deepened knowledge of the affective bonds in the incestuous families can serve of subsidy for the creation of programs and projects in the area of the public politics, a time that makes use of instruments that can make possible a precocious diagnosis of the cases, to provide the means for someone else to qualify the professionals, as much in the aspect how much emotional technician to deal it with the relative questions to the sexual violence, as well as supplying to therapeutical methods the individuals and reached groups.

Bell, Vikki H. "Foucault and feminism : the case of incest." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20015.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the work of Michel Foucault (1926-1984), and particularly his The History of Sexuality: An Introduction (THS, 1981), within a feminist framework. It considers the usefulness of Foucault on both a general level and on the specific issue of incest. Incest has long been a topic of interest in the social sciences, but more recently its theorisation has been the preserve of feminism. In contrast with earlier sociological interest in the incest prohibition, feminism has relocated incest within the context of sexual violence. Exploring the relationship between the feminist analyses of incest and Foucault's arguments on power, sexuality and discourse, elaborates the subtleties of the feminist position. However, Foucault's work is also challenging to a feminist position, and as a result of the confrontation with his writings, a certain amount of rewriting of the feminist analysis is advocated. Although the passages in THS that refer to incest are few, incest is placed at a pivotal position in Foucault's schema. This thesis discusses the place Foucault accords incest, and uses his argument as a framework for thinking about the ways in which incest is spoken about and in a reconceptualisation of the place of 'the incest prohibition' in feminist analyses. The second half of the thesis moves to the field of law in an analysis of the parliamentary debates which have formulated the crime of incest in both English and Scots criminal law.

Lockert, Laurie. "Friendship between women : the influence of incest." PDXScholar, 1987. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3738.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focused on the mother/daughter relationship in father/daughter incest and how that relationship influences women's friendships with other women. Many researchers have concluded that females who were sexually abused by male authority figures, i.e., father, step-father, grandfather, older brother, minister, babysitter, will have impaired relationships with men. Clinicians surmise that the enormous betrayal of trust involved in the incest leads the child to generalize from her experience with one male to all males. Victims express feelings of distrust, fear of intimacy, and fear of personal expression in all male/female relationships. Studies suggest that in families where father/daughter incest has occurred the relationships between mother and daughter are also impaired. Most often cited is the distant relationship between the mother and daughter. Also discussed is the intense anger the daughter feels toward the mother for not protecting her from the perpetrator's abuse. Betrayal, in the form of the mother's inability to provide protection, often evokes more anger from the daughter than does the father's betrayal.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to determine if a brief and focused training experience, based upon a multiple systems incest treatment model, would reduce attribution of incest blame. As increasing numbers of persons seek treatment for incestuous experiences, trained professionals will be needed who understand the complexities of incest and the impact of attributing blame. The present study utilized extensively Systemic Treatment of Incest: A Therapeutic Handbook by Trepper and Barrett (1989) as a basis for training. Seventy five female and forty male upper level undergraduates enrolled in two Fundamentals of Counseling and two Techniques of Psychological Intervention courses served as subjects. A randomly assigned, two group post-test only design was employed. Participation in a three hour training experience served as the independent variable. The Attribution of Incest Blame Scale (AIBS) offender, mother, victim, societal, and situational blame subscales were dependent variables. It was hypothesized training would reduce levels of blame attribution and that male subjects would blame incest victims more than female subjects. Demographic variables and hypotheses were tested by MANOVA and ANOVA statistical procedures (alpha levels = <.05).Results indicated training had a significant effect in reducing offender and mother blame while increasing situational blame, Males blamed incest victims more than did females, replicating previous findings. Post-training qualitative evaluations suggested the "vulnerability to incest" paradigm, central to systemic treatment of incest, contributed to the findings.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The phenomenon of sibling incest in not unknown, on the contrary, it’s a very recurrent subject in mythology, literature (scientific and fiction), in history and, most importantly, in people’s lives. However, even though it’s well known, there haven’t been many studies developed in this phenomenon. Still, many authors consider that this type of abuse can be highly prejudicial, not only for the victim, but also for the abuser and, when known, even to other family members, given that this type of abuse occurs in the family. In this sense, some of the studies suggest that there is a relationship between family dysfunction and this type of incestuous abuse. It’s necessary to take in to account that there are many forms of incestuous abuse, such as father-daughter, mother-son, amongst others. However, the present paper will only consider the matters related to the incestuous abuse that occurs between siblings. So, the purpose of the present study is to explore the existing relationship between family dysfunction and sibling incest in the family(ies) in this study, being that this dysfunction will be verified through family structure, based on Minuchin’s (1988) theory. For that effect, there will be considered only families in which sibling incest occurred, and in which the abuser was 16 years old and the victim 14 years old, maximum, at the time of the abuse. In what concern the definition of sibling, there will be taken into account the one from Bass et al. (2006), because it includes biological and non-biological siblings, but that are connected to the child by kinship for, as Caffaro and Conn-Caffaro (1998) say, violence has similar mechanisms when it occurs in these relationships.

Abstract:
Childhood incest and sexual abuse was explored in depth to determine the coping skills used by victims, based upon their descriptive recall of these events. Eighteen adult women, who were group therapy members and leaders, were interviewed about their experiences as sexually abused children and adolescents. The critical incident technique was used to identify what hindered or facilitated the victims coping in the eighty-one abuse experiences collected. Each incident was categorized according to the identifiable stress, and the type of coping method used. Three categories of identifiable stress emerged from the data which were labelled offenders, significant others, and victims. Of these, the largest number of incidents related to stress created by offenders. In this sample, victims utilized direct action, inhibition of action, and intrapsychic coping methods, but not information seeking. Of these, direct action was most frequently employed. Independent judges found these categories reliable. Results are examined according to theoretical frameworks in coping theory and current perspectives on sexual abuse.

Liu, Miriam Mei Lin. "Issues in father-daughter incest intervention in Taiwan." Thesis, University of Hull, 2006. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:7054.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis centres on the perceptions of social work professionals involved in incest intervention in Taiwan. It is based on 39 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with respondents from three categories: social workers, social work supervisors and counsellors/therapists, from different regions of Taiwan, working in Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention Centres. The gender distribution of the interviewees, 35 women and 4 men, reflects the numerical dominance of women in social work. This study shows that the majority of the respondents were assigned child protection work without consultation, reflecting the hierarchical decision-making process in Taiwanese social work, overriding staff autonomy, personal preferences and training background. Child protection work creates high pressure and necessitates joint decision making involving all related disciplines. Almost every worker interviewed felt a high level of stress and a need for support in dealing with incest/child sexual cases, perhaps due to insufficient knowledge and inadequate training. The shorter the time frame they face, the more mistakes they may make. I utilized two theoretical viewpoints, including family systems theory associated with pathological behaviours and feminist theory, to elucidate how interactions between gender and power contribute to gender inequality in intervention outcomes. My findings suggest that the current child protection procedure in Taiwan raises significant concerns. These include time-constraints in intervention and psychotherapy, the sequencing of the procedure, and lack of gender-awareness. It seems the hierarchical organisational structure directly and indirectly encourages social workers to be overreliant on their supervisors in decision-making. The relationship between the supervisor and supervisee is often inadequate, leading to many supervisees feeling undermined and discouraged from growing personally in confidence. My study found that no one particular intervention fits all cases and the therapeutic approach chosen will depend on the circumstances of the case, based on the therapist's training background, individual personality variations and experience. However, practitioners identified 'sensitivity: 'accompaniment' and 'empowerment' as effective and important. Radical changes in attitude, an incorporation of a feminist approach, a gender understanding work culture and a clear resolve to make positive changes in the fields of education, practice and reforms in legal and hierarchical structures may resolve some of the difficulties the present system of social work practice in incest faces.

Incest, though not a transcendental taboo and / or universal but contingent, is a sexual practice often silenced as it has been pointed in some studies on Sexuality and Eroticism. Youth is a stage of human life also culturally marked by tensions related to sexuality. Thus, this study investigated the different individual interpretations of incest given by young people in the metropolitan region of Recife. These young interlocutors attended a training group called Youth Action, joined to the Dialogue Project for Social Development in Suape. The group main aims were to work issues related to sexuality, gender-based violence, sexual violence, abuse of alcohol and other drugs and violence against women, as social vulnerabilities related to those issues were intensified in that region since the arrival of the Abreu e Lima Refinery. Thus, promoting workshops based on the methodological theoretical prospect of working with groups, we built up a space that favoured the work with issues regarding sexuality and youth. The ethnographical method contributed to the spontaneous atmosphere, in which, the aspects regarding intra-family sex were approached. The meetings were video-recorded, transcribed and later organized into thematic analytical categories. Thus, these categories were set based on the interpretations about incest which were elicited from the youth group, These are the categories, domestic sexual violence, notions that questioned the possibilities of autonomy in childhood and also ideas symbolically maximized about violence, all strongly permeated by the inequalities of gender system / gender, as well as relations within the group were also permeated by these inequalities. These different meanings given l to incest crossed by ideas of violence related to gender hierarchies produced other perceptions in this study. These other directions were, however, guided in a system registry or different ideas, more related to the speeches regarding sexuality and erotic than the gender itself, although permeated by it. Thus, other categories have been added as sex addiction, related to scientific and religious discourses on family and sexuality and erotic arrangements called "crooked deals" between those who can or cannot have sex. So these categories treated not only the relations of inequality, but also possible subversions of sex system / genre linked to youthful generational marker. Finally, the group worked based on their interventional or inter-inventive actions, in which we went through processes marked by multiplicity and multiple inputs and outputs, like a rhizome in which was possible to (re) situate the impasses among the different meanings given to the incest and the relationships built in the research.

Lightman, Ira. "DISABUSE." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 1996. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.481729.

Full text
Abstract:
This creative writing document, DISABUSE, chronicles the impact of formerly repressed incest memories upon its male writer, just prior to beginning work on the Ph.D. in Creative and Critical Writing at the University of East Anglia. The male writer's interests prior to beginning this work were, among others, Modernism, especially Poundian Modernism, translation from the French, the setting of words to music, using personae, formalism and language games. The impact of the formerly repressed incest memories causes the writer to draw on these as means of articulation, and also quiz them. Have his interests brought him to this pass? Or has he arrived there because they finally failed to keep him from it? If so, have they ironically provided him with means to face it? The document DISABUSE is a collage of four parts. Three of them, "A Progression", "The Little I Can Do" (a song-cycle), and "Non-Fictions", are themselves collages. Each more or less resembles the form of a conventional contemporary poetry collection, being a set of one to five page pieces using different poetic or experimental poetic forms. The other part, "Incest", is a three-section permutation upon the same data, originally composed by improvising onto a spreadsheet computer program for data management, graphs and tables. This collage of collages suggests connections have been made by putting the parts together in the order offered, but this has been by choices sometimes systematic, sometimes intuitive and sometimes arbitrary. This collage form thus reflects the way of seeing childhood (and human growth) that most appeals to the author, as a symbiosis of experiences shaped by belief, intuition and the intervention of other beings and chance. Nevertheless, some distinctions are made; some things are called damaging and unjust, but other things are looked for beside it. Writing such a collage was his way of constructing some kind of honest self-audit, best suited to him. He can hope that the resourcefulness inspires some, the craftsmanship appeals to others. The writer goes a little way to explaining his practice in an afterword, "posttalkscript": an exact transcription of a six hour improvised dictation about DISABUSE (and about writing DISABUSE) composed a year after finishing and shaping the collage. He offers initial insights into both writing and incest recovery gained from the process of writing and coming back to the work after a rest: insights on the role of institutions in encouraging or stalling incest recovery in students experiencing incest symptoms or repressed memory retrieval while also growing and working (other than asking them to withdraw to another place to work solely on healing); insights on the discussion of incest in literary and theoretical work; insights on poetics, and how to make (difficult) poetics seem relevant and analogous to other areas, and them to it. The writer, however, makes no pretence to offering either a system or indeed a systematised social thesis. His principal work has been to produce a creative document and reflect upon it. Despite that document's sometimes contentious and tendentious style, its purpose is not to raise issues and then reflect in a seasoned way upon those issues. That would be sociology, for which the writer is not qualified and is not subjecting himself to examination in order to be qualified. The purpose of the "posttalkscript" is to attempt the difficult work of the writer seeing himself as others might see him, and attempting (not always expertly) to offer a feel of who wrote DISABUSE, so that it be easier to attend to its poetry and writerly endeavour. Part of the writer's character is to feel he is at his best when trying to stir thought, not convert others wholesale to his own thought. DISABUSE shows this part of the writer's character temporarily repressed (to, the writer believes now, its limit) to expose a taste for aggressive didacticism (which can stir thought! ) like that of his some of his own favourite writings, of which he offers readings thought DISABUSE. Both DISABUSE and "posttalkscript" are endnoted, and there is a full bibliography.

Ritchey, Kathleen M. "Women with a history of incest : MMPI profile constellations." Virtual Press, 1991. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/776710.

Abstract:
The current study assessed the effects of incest utilizing the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), an objective measure that can address such long term effects as low self esteem, isolation, depression, anxiety, suicidality, substance abuse, impaired sexual adjustment, psychosomatic concerns, and interpersonal relationship difficulties. Eighty-one women seeking counseling for issues related to an incestuous childhood, and 90 non sexually abused adult female clients completed the MMPI and a background information questionnaire.A Multivariate Analysis of Variance test comparing the mean profiles demonstrated that the incest group was more somatic, depressed, angry, anxious, and confused. A chi square analysis of two-point code type configurations found the incest group being more classified by the 48/84 and the 24/42 code types whereas the control group was more represented by the 46/64 code type. Lastly, the groups were compared by completing cluster analyses on each group's profiles. Both groups yielded an "overwhelmed" cluster that was statistically the same. Secondly, they each yielded a "normal" cluster that was similar but statistically different. Finally, the incest group yielded an "angry and confused" cluster and the control group yielded a "somatizer" cluster. Descriptions of the clusters and reasons for their differences are proposed.Differential impact was examined by comparing the incest clusters on number of abusers, use of threat or force, identity of the abuser, perceived betrayal by a non offending parent, length of time since abuse, and length of time in counseling. The only significant finding in these analyses was that the "overwhelmed" cluster had a greater number of abusers than the "angry and confused" and the "normal" clusters. The first two analyses were included in the study to validate the similarity of the present data with previous research and to demonstrate the myopic vision that results from analyzing the data in these manners. The cluster analysis allowed for the examination of the differential impact of the numerous long term sequalae. Recommendations for further research are presented as well as implications for treatment.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
A modern interpretation of Wuthering Heights suggests that an unconscious incest taboo impeded Catherine and her foster brother, Heathcliff, from achieving normal sexual union and led them to seek union after death. Insights from anthropology, psychology, and sociology provide a key to many of the subtleties of the novel by broadening our perspectives on the causes of incest, its manifestations, and its consequences. Anthropology links the incest taboo to primitive systems of totemism and rules of exogamy, under which the two lovers' marriage would have been disallowed because they are members of the same clan. Psychological studies provide insight into Heathcliff and Catherine's abnormal relationship—emotionally passionate but sexually dispassionate—and their even more bizarre behavior—sadistic, necrophilic, and vampiristic—all of which can be linked to incest. The psychological manifestations merge with the moral consequences in Bronte's inverted image of paradise; as in Milton's Paradise, incest is both a metaphor for evil and a symbol of pre-Lapsarian innocence. The psychological and moral consequences of incest in the first generation carry over into the second generation, resulting in a complex doubling of characters, names, situations, narration, and time sequences that is characteristic of the self-enclosed, circular nature of incest. An examination of Emily Bronte's family background demonstrates that she was sociologically and psychologically predisposed to write a story with an underlying incest motif.

Abstract:
The non-victimized siblings in incestuous families have often been ignored in research, literature, and treatment. This study explored these siblings' 1) relationship to the victim, 2) attribution of blame, and 3) adjustment. Participants were 30 non-victimized siblings of incest victims, between the ages of 8 and 14. They completed the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire, the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale, the Self-perception Profile for Children, the Children's Depression Inventory, and a questionnaire developed for this research. Participants' scores were compared with the normative sample scores on several measures. Siblings perceived little warmth and closeness in their relationships to their victimized sisters. Rivalry and conflict were within normal limits. Siblings blamed victims and other family members less than expected, with the greatest amount of blame attributed to perpetrators. Adjustment was impaired. Males demonstrated less athletic competence, less global self-worth, more worry and oversensitivity than normative samples. Females showed a tendency toward less global self-worth and heightened general anxiety. Siblings' overall level of emotional distress was higher than most of the normative samples.

Abstract:
This work is a study of the incest between father and daughter (or step father and step daughter) under the light of the Psychoanalysis. The clinical practice helps as a starting point in this reflection, that develops itself through the applied psychoanalysis for the understanding of the existing emotional aspects in the observed situations . The interdiction of the incest is considered to be a fundamental element for human development, at a personal level, at a family level, and even as a social aspect. The incest between father and daughter infringes this rule, denouncing a failure or distortion within the parental duty, which is very important on ones emotional growth. This research uses concepts of narcissism and superego to understand the psychological dynamics involved in incestuous sexual abuse practiced by the father. In some cases, such actions denote a high anguish level, which threatens the proper mental functioning in a way that the only possible response, to a certain profile of people, is through violent actions. The incest act relates to the acting out of forbidden impulses identified as the basis for the Oedipus complex. However, the clinical practice demonstrates that the incestuous attitude doesnt relate simply to the direct satisfaction of these impulses. The wide variability of emotional configurations in each of the different families with incestuous history, confirms that. Diverse family environments and different repercussions relate to each incestuous experience. Each occurrence should be evaluated within its complexity and peculiarity

Abstract: This research is based upon my professional experience as a psychologist of a Specialized Social Service Reference Centre - SSSRC - which offers psychosocial assistance to children and adolescents victims of violence, located in a city in the interior of Paraná State.
Sexual abuse against children is a practice regarded as one of the gravest forms of violation of moral and physical, psychological trauma that results in severe and devastating. Generally, causes destructive consequences in shaping the personality of the child, not to mention the physical and social sequelae. The mother is usually the caregiver who is responsible for the care of children after the disclosure and reporting of abuse within families. Many studies consider it to be co-responsible for the abuse, in that it failed to protect the child of such an occurrence. From this idea, this research aimed to investigate the psychological characteristics, family relations of mothers of child victims of sexual abuse and its intergenerational story. To this end, we used the method of investigation of Multiple Case Studies, which allowed a qualitative analysis of the phenomenon studied in depth. In this study three mothers of child victims of sexual abuse, referred by the Center for the Study of Childhood and Adolescence (CEPIA), the city of Passo Fundo. Data collection was performed by a psychological evaluation of the mothers in the clinical practice of the researcher. Were used as instruments of data collection: semi-structured interview, genogram and Thematic Apperception Test (TAT). The cases were analyzed in depth, integrating data from instruments used (vertical analysis), and subsequently conducted a review of the cases together, seeking similarities and differences (horizontal analysis). We conclude that incest is not a phenomenon that relates exclusively to the victims, but occurs as a result of multiple determinants, which refer to characteristics of the characters involved and the dynamics of the relationship between them.

The main objective of this research was to investigate the consented incest among siblings from another perspective, distanced from the perspective of sexual abuse. We inquire about the psychic and social implications for those who live the experience of the incestuous act (incestuous sexual act) without meaning it as violence. It is a theoretical research that makes an articulation between the art and the psychoanalysis of Freud and Lacan. For that, a bibliographical survey was carried out divided in three chapters and in a chapter one develops a reading of the French film Marguerite and Julien - A love forbidden (2017) to illustrate the discussion. Finally, this research found a shortage of Brazilian literature on consented incest, having found in some international authors a dialogue on the topic. In addition, it was possible to propose an extension of the subject of incest that can manifest in various ways, both from the point of view of the choice of incestuous object, and the way the subject deals with that relationship, being able to live it without meaning it as violence. The development of the research made possible to establish a difference between incest among siblings and structural incest, which includes the triad of the Oedipus complex, which consists of the relation of the subject to the paternal and maternal function. Thus, it was understood that the distinction of the type of incest, whether abusive or consensual, is fundamental for the clinical management and understanding of the implications that involve a type of sexual object choice that goes against the prevailing sexual morality

Abstract:
The incest prohibition, though ostensibly "universal," has inspired a wide range of explanations and definitions both within and between cultures. Intense debate sprung up around the incest taboo during the matrimonially tumultuous reign of Henry VIII, leading to the great interest in this theme, which flourished on the Elizabethan and Jacobean stages. Although Shakespeare contributed a number of works to the incest canon, King Lear does not treat the incest motif overtly such that many critics have ignored its crucial role in that play. A synthetic theoretical approach is useful in exploring the wide-reaching implications of father-daughter love in Lear, which challenges the parameters of the incest prohibition.
King Lear's effort to obstruct the marriage of Cordelia in the first scene constitutes a violation of the incest prohibition according to Levi-Strauss's notion of exogamy. To this violation, Cordelia contributes her belief that marriage requires only partial withdrawal of love from her father. Lear's unfulfilled love for his daughter Cordelia, whom he figures into wife and mother roles, exhibits oedipal traits and seeks gratification in Goneril and Regan. Lear experiences their "unnatural" refusal of his desires as emasculating sexual rejection, which manifests as the disease and guilt of transgression. He understands virtuous love as fatally tainted by sexual desire; the theme of love-as-death gains momentum. The tempest emerges as an agent of justice and punishment. Lear and Cordelia's reunion reasserts the themes of adulterous love and love-as-death, foreshadowing their shared death. Their subsequent capture introduces an expanded notion of the father-daughter relationship, including the possibility of conjugal love, which is consummated in their marriage in death.

Abstract:
This study was designed to determine the relationship between attitudes of child protective social workers in their identifying children at risk, and their assessment of father-daughter incest. Fifty-seven caseworkers participated in the study. The findings indicated that: 1) there is no significant difference in mean based on different levels of education in assessment of children at risk; 2) there was no significant difference between the black and white caseworkers in their identifying children at risk in father-daughter incest; and 3) there was no difference in workers living in rural areas as oppose to workers living in urban areas in their perception of children at risk.

Abstract:
In this thesis the reader is offered two perspectives in relation to the incest offender: the one as deviant individual and the other as invented self. The first perspective is rendered visible in the question invariably asked by each incest offender when he first enters treatment, namely, 'why did I do it?' This is a psychological question in which the Truth of the offender's deviance is sought in psychological explanations based upon a Western concept of the person. However, in this thesis it is how the incest offender has come to be situated within the Field of Sex Offender Treatment as a deviant individual that is the subject of investigation. Hence, it is behavioral and cognitive-behavioral psychology's intellectual technologies, such as its ways of seeing and diagnosing, and its inscription devices that enable norms to be established, evaluations to be carried out and judgements to be made in the Field of Sex Offender Treatment that are the subject of investigation. This thesis is also concerned with regimes of self-governance. This domain of ethics is also rendered visible in the above question in which the incest offender is seeking to know the Truth of his self by both judging himself and seeking to know how he should have regulated his behavior and how he should behave. Here this thesis both investigates the regimes of self-governance invented by behavioral and cognitive-behavioral psychology in order for the offender as deviant individual to gain mastery over himself, and also offers the perspective of an invented self through an investigation of the incest offender's regime of subjectification. That is, an investigation of the diversity of ways in which the incest offender has acted upon himself, evaluated his existence and given his life meaning, as well as the diversity of ways in which he has been opened up to interventions conducted in the name of subjectivity. These investigations of how the incest offender has produced a particular relation with himself as an invented self, and how the incest offender has come to be situated within the Field of Sex Offender Treatment as a deviant individual open up different possibilities. First, the possibility for different questions to be asked regarding cognitive-behavioral treatment techniques. Secondly, the possibility that as an invented self, the incest offender can choose to invent himself differently.

Abstract:
This qualitative study attempted to identify similar life themes among 10 women who reported experiencing incest as children, whose ages ranged from 26-66 years. Adlerian Lifestyle Questionnaires were administered during individual interviews and judged by three expert Adlerian judges for common life themes. Similarities of life themes were found among the subjects' family atmospheres, birth order positions, relationship of perpetrator to study subjects, subjects' goals and expectations, subjects' apperceptions regarding themselves, others, men, women, the world, and life. A composite Lifestyle Summary of study subjects revealed women who wanted to be loved (40%), expected to be hurt (60%), and mistreated (50%); perceived themselves as inferior and sensitive (40%); men as untrustworthy (60%); the world as a place where they were unprotected (50%); and life as dangerous (70%) and confusing (60%).

Mann, Erin Irene. "Relative identities: father-daughter incest in Medieval English religious literature." Diss., University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/4873.

Abstract:
Medieval tales of father-daughter incest depict more than offensively dominant fathers and voiceless, victimized young women: these stories often contain moments of surprising counternarrative. My analysis of incest narratives foregrounds striking instances of feminine resistance, where daughters act independently, speak unrestrainedly, adopt masculine behaviors, and invert masculine gazes. I argue that daughters of incestuous fathers participate in a complex back-and-forth of attraction and rejection that thrusts the fraught nature of the incest into sharp relief, revealing the ways in which medieval families--as well as the medieval church and state--constructed and deconstructed identities and sexualities. Extending Judith Butler's insights on how incest tales interrogate state and kinship networks, I show how the liminal position of daughters in the family destabilizes the sex/gender system as it functioned in both the family and the larger world, secular and sacred. My dissertation thus relocates daughters from the periphery to the center of the medieval family. Christian thematics likewise provide a key framework for both my argument and medieval audiences: biblical translations and retellings, saints' lives, and moral exempla offered familiar points of reference. By revealing how authors and artists employed well-known religious stories to impart political readings of sexuality and of the family, the four chapters of my dissertation assert daughters' key role in medieval Christian culture. I examine both Anglo-Saxon texts--the biblical epic Genesis A and the prose Life of Euphrosyne--as well as the late medieval poem Cursor mundi and Chaucer's Clerk's Tale. My readings are enhanced by recourse to the medieval visual record offered by three manuscripts that illustrate the Lot story--British Library MS Cotton Claudius B.iv, the Old English Hexateuch, and Oxford Bodleian Library MSS Junius 11(the Genesis A manuscript) and Bodley 270b, a Biblé moralisée. Artistic renderings of father-daughter incest are no less unsettled than their literary counterparts, and demonstrate that the position of daughters was so fundamentally unstable that it often varied not only within an era, but also within a single manuscript. I argue that authors and artists radically reimagined the fundamental texts of the Middle Ages, including the Old Testament, to establish new narratives of sin and salvation, self and other, and power and submission.
