Abstract:
The article brings the theory into question that emotions in the Ottoman realm centred on love and investigates whether and if, how, emotions played a role in the empire’s diplomatic gift traffic. The gift exchange with the Mamluks and Iran was largely influenced by specific political situations and feelings were mainly acted out in the domestic sphere. There were, however, several items, which as gifts signalled intimate friendship. Yet, the Ottomans utilised only by way of exception as diplomatic gifts. On the diplomatic stage the main function of presents was to convey messages, be it a thread, or be it an exhortation.

Abstract:
AbstractIt has been argued whether a transfer policy for elderly people should be in kind or in cash. This paper presents a rationale to answer the question in an endogenous growth model with a two-way intrafamily transfer in middle age, education for the child as an inter-vivos transfer, and informal parental care in exchange for a bequest. We have two analytical results. First, a transfer in cash, such as a public pension, prevents economic growth because a strategic behavior concerning caregiving generates a disincentive effect on education. Second, a transfer in kind, such as public formal care, promotes economic growth because the valuation of the service generates an additional benefit of education, which dominates the disincentive effect. Our results show that old age support should be in kind rather than in cash in the context of economic growth and also welfare if bequests are strategic.

Abstract:
This study aims to identify the optimal inflation target for the European Central Bank (ECB). It will argue that the current definition of price stability and thus, the target of 2% yearly increase in HICP is not relevant according to our macroeconomic projection in Eurozone. This study argues that very low inflation rates for the last years may signify a threat of deflation. Specifically, the study argues for asymmetric inflation targeting and recommend the ECB to reformulate its inflation target as “close to 2.5% from below and above”. This has to be done in order to counter possible deflation, lower unemployment, avoid the liquidity trap, and give more room for the ECB to conduct its macroeconomic policy under the threat of recession. It is also briefly illuminated some other benefits of higher inflation, such as the option of negative interest rates, seigniorage and money illusion, and the corresponding of the costs associated with higher inflation of 2.5%, such as shoe leather costs, menu costs, tax distortions and uncertainty due to price variability. It is assumed that the outcome of Cost-Benefit analysis for a 2.5% inflation target is not very different from that for a 2% level, while a greater increase in inflation target would produce unclear results.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
One of the most common policy-related messages that economists present to non-economists is the superiority of cash over in-kind transfers as a policy tool. A good deal of government policy on behalf of the poor consists, of course, of various forms of in-kind assistance, such as medical care or food stamps. However, if we wish to help the poor, the argument goes, in-kind transfers are an inferior way to do so.
