Chen, Qinqing, and Xiao Su. "Improve Improper Load Distribution with Backpack." Thesis, Högskolan Kristianstad, Fakulteten för naturvetenskap, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hkr:diva-18766.

Full text
Abstract:
This article focuses on the distribution of backpack pressure on human body. We have noticed two interesting situations: whether the length of different backpack shoulder straps will change the pressure distribution of the backpack on the human body and whether different positions of the backpack load will change the pressure distribution of the backpack on the human body. To find the answer, we designed a backpack pressure detection system to collect data and use engineering software to analyse the data.We got the range that best fits the human body and the healthiest backpack: when the distance from the top of the backpack to the shoulder is about 1/5 of the length of the shoulder and the weight of the backpack is at the bottom of the backpack. At this time, the force of the three parts of the human body (shoulders, back) is the most uniform and relatively minimal. If the user wants to minimize the pressure on the shoulder, the shoulder strap of the backpack should be as short as possible. If the user only wants the pressure on the back to be minimal, the weight in the backpack is closer to the back, which is better for the back.

Walton, Deborah A. "Improved Rehabilitation by Improving Discharge Processes to Decrease Readmissions." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5534.

Full text
Abstract:
Inadequate discharge planning for individuals with chronic illnesses or injuries is associated with increased readmissions to the hospital or rehabilitation facility where the original treatments were administered. To help ensure the recovery of discharged patients and avoid readmissions, discharge planners guide medication and care processes. The rate of readmissions was high in a stand-alone rehabilitation center due to ineffective discharge plans. Patients, family members, and caregivers lacked knowledge about medications, treatments, and self-care guidelines after the patient left the facility. The purpose of this project was to ascertain the impact of improved discharge processes using the (a) IDEAL Discharge Planning Overview, Process, and Checklist; (b) the teach-back Method training for discharge nurses; and (c) the Postdischarge Rehabilitation Services Follow-Up Tool incorporating telephone calls to all participants during Weeks 1, 2, and 4 postdischarge. Lewin's theory of planned change undergirded this project. According to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services data, the rate of readmissions among the 50 participants was 4.4%, compared with 6% (all-facility readmission rate) during the same quarter of the prior year. Findings from this project suggest that reductions in readmissions were associated with improvements in discharge planning, training of caregivers, and the use of national tools to standardize practices in reducing readmissions. The implication of this project for positive social change is that patient-centered inpatient rehabilitation care and patient-centered care following discharge may reduce readmissions, reduce costs, improve reimbursement, and reduce deterioration of patients' conditions postdischarge.

Edgar, Cara, and Dilek Tanyildiz. "Warehouse Analysis and Improvement for Färggrossen : A Multiple Case Study." Thesis, Linköping University, Logistics, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-21903.

Full text
Abstract:

Färggrossen is a warehousing company that was established in 1976. The company has over 400 customers ranging across mid and south Sweden; it stores 5,000 different types of products such as paints, wallpapers, chemicals and tools which are used for painting.

Since its establishment, the company has not changed how it manages its warehouse. Decisions are based on the warehouse manager’s personal memory and decisions, and this method worked sufficiently well until the company was bought by Mikael Lindgren in September 2008. Lindgren, the CEO, believed that the company had more potential, which is why the company has eagerly started to make changes in order to improve the warehouse operations as well as to reach its full potential. This thesis is to guide the company to reach this goal.

At our first meeting with Färggrossen, improvements regarding different processes as well as the warehouse layout were identified. As a first step, a literature study was conducted in order to gain deeper insight and understanding about warehouse layouts; also we benefited from studying literature regarding different warehouse aspects from a system perspective: inputs, processes and outputs.

Subsequent to the literature study, we identified those thesis research questions which needed to be answered in order to improve the warehouse management at Färggrossen. The next step was to decide which methods should be used in order to answer these questions. After researching different methodology options, a meeting with Färggrossen and our supervisor Bengt Ekdahl took place where we, together, decided to use the multiple case study method.

Färggrossen suggested that we study two other companies, BSAB and ECO; according to them, these companies had similar warehouses. To be able to benchmark three companies, we needed to understand the warehousing management systems of all three companies, which is why we conducted our interviews.

Once we finished gathering the required data, we defined the three companies’ activities in a manner to correspond with the terminology which is used in the literature.  In the analysis chapter we compared the three companies, and also used the information from the literature in order to provide Färggrossen with recommendations on how to improve the warehouse processes and layout. These are categorised as main, secondary and future recommendations; the main recommendations are the most important and inexpensive to implement, which is why we strongly suggest that they are prioritized.

The two most important recommendations to improve the outputs of the warehouse system are implementing a serialized locater addressing system and defining a bulk area to support the replenishment process. These particular modifications will improve the overall efficiency of the warehouse system as well as the product availability and the customer satisfaction.

The overall efficiency of the warehouse system will be further improved by eliminating manual labour as much as possible and combining the inspections whih are done in the receiving process with the putaway process.

The product condition will be improved if the following recommendations are implemented; a small shelf solution which is used in ECO, a fixed slot system in the wallpaper area and the implementation of safety precautions in the company.

The purpose of this thesis was to map and analyze Färggrossen in order to improve the inventory, warehouse layout and the methods being used in the warehouse management. With our recommendations, the company will have an improved and new warehouse layout, the processes will be improved and the efficiency will be increased.

Ullén, Anders. "Strategies to improve cancer radioimmunotargeting." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Klinisk immunologi, 1996. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-141302.

Full text
Abstract:
Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) and radioimmunolocalisation (RIL) are developing and promising technologies to diagnose and treat tumours by use of radiolabelled antibodies targeting tumour specific antigens. The major reason why RIL and RIT not are efficient enough, is the comparatively low accumulation of radiolabelled antibodies in the tumours. Irrespective of the antigen - antibody system used, the maximal tumour uptake in humans is often limited to below 0.1 % of the total injected dose, with significant radionuclide remaining in the blood pool and extravascular fluid. In the present thesis, the following putative improvement techniques for radioimmunotargeting have been evaluated in an experimental model using HeLa cell-xenografted nude mice: 1) Repetitive, simultaneous targeting of different antigens, 2) Removal of non-targeting antibodies using secondary antiidiotypic antibodies, 3) Preinjection of unlabelled antibody to remove shedded antigen and 4) Use of fractionated antibody administration. By use of multiple injections of mixtures of two different 131I-labelled monoclonal antibodies targeting placental alkaline phosphatase (H7) and cytokeratin 8 (TS1), respectively, a significant tumour growth inhibition compared to controls, was obtained. In the treated group, a negligible increase in tumour volume was seen compared to the control group, in which a 20-fold increase was observed. Quantitative determinations of volume densities of viable tumour cells, necrotic cells and connective tissue demonstrated no significant differences in the relative proportions between the groups, indicating that the irradiation caused decelerated growth. Using hybridoma technology, monoclonal antiidiotypic antibodies were generated against both TS1 and H7. The in vitro and in vivo effects of these antibodies, aH7 and aTSl, were investigated. Both these antiidiotypes were found to generate stable complexes with the radiolabelled idiotypic antibody, as revealed by gel-electrophoresis and autoradiography. Using biosensor technology (BIAcore, Pharmacia) the interactions were followed in real time and the association rate-, dissociation rate-, and affinity constants between the reactants were determined. In vivo, the antiidiotypes promoted a rapid dose dependent clearance of the 125I-labelled idiotypes with a decrease in total body radioactivity and concomitant dramatic increase in non-protein bound 125I excreted in the urine. The syngeneic monoclonal antiidiotypic antibody αTSl, was furthermore evaluated as a secondary clearing antibody at radioimmunolocalisation. Injection of αTSl in a molar ratio of 0.5-0.75:1 to TS1, 24 hours after the 125I-labelled TS1 improved the tumour to normal tissue ratio 2-3 fold. This was due to a decreased level of total body radioactivity as well as a slight decrease in tumour-radioactivity. A model describing the kinetics of the involved components, i.e. the antigen, the idiotype and the antiidiotype was presented. It is concluded that high affinity monoclonal antiidiotypes can be used as tools to regulate the levels of idiotypic antibodies in vivo. This strategy, combined with preinjection of nonlabelled idiotypic antibodies, caused accumulated doses of 3 Gy to the tumour and 0.9 Gy to non tumour tissues as calculated for 125I-labelled antibodies (80 MBq/mg) by MIRD formalism based on repetitive quantitative radioimmunoscintigraphies. By approaching the maximal tolerated whole body radiation dose for mice (i.e. 6 Gy), it can be estimated that doses up to 20 Gy are possible to obtain following one single injection of labelled antibody. It was furthermore demonstrated that a single bolus injection of antibody is to be preferred, compared to exactly the same dose divided into three or ten fractions. Thus, not only the dose of radioactivity, but also the amount of antibody should be considered for fractionated RIT. In summary, the thesis demonstrates that several techniques can be used to improve radioimmunolocalisation and to approach the proposed 70 Gy required to sterilise tumours at radioimmunotherapy.

Abstract:

Declining scholarly writing abilities are well-documented among college students and are of particular concern in schools of nursing whose graduates are groomed to become leaders in the nation’s healthcare system. Reasons for students’ poor writing are multifactorial; however, faculty’s inability to correctly identify errors and wide variability in grading practices have been identified as major components. A doctoral translating evidence into nursing practice project was designed to study the effectiveness of a faculty-focused writing course on (1) improving identification of errors, (2) reducing inaccurate feedback, and (3) reducing grading variability. This descriptive, crosssectional, interventional study was implemented at a private liberal arts university in the Midwest. Results were measured by having participants grade the same fictitious student paper containing 41 grammatical, punctuation, capitalization, and APA formatting errors pre and post the interventional course. Sixty-seven participants completed the four-week online writing course, and 43 participants completed the study with fully evaluable data. The writing course significantly increased the number of errors identified and decreased the number of inaccurate comments on the fictitious paper; however, overall grading variability remained unchanged. The study identified characteristics of faculty most proficient in grading practices and ways to potentially improve faculty writing and grading abilities. The creation of a guide to assist students in writing and faculty with grading APA formatted papers was an incidental outcome of the study.

Abstract:
Research has demonstrated that well into their undergraduate and even graduate education, learners often struggle to understand basic statistical concepts, fail to see their relevance in their personal and professional lives, and often treat them as little more than mere mathematics exercises. This study explored ways help learners in an undergraduate learning context to treat statistical inquiry as mattering in a practical research context, by inviting them to ask questions about and analyze large, real, messy datasets that they have collected about their own personal lives (i.e., self-data). This study examined the conditions under which such an intervention might (and might not) successfully lead to a greater sense of the relevance of statistics to undergraduate learners.

Abstract:
More than one-third of the world population is infected with Tuberculosis (TB). World Health Organization has declared Tuberculosis as a global public health emergency in 1993. The people, affected by TB, are usually living in developing countries. In fact, TB is especially prevalent in Southeast Asia. China has been listed as a country with a high TB burden yet there are 150 “one-way permit” holders, across the border in China, for settlement purposes in Hong Kong. There is neither any health requirement nor obligatory physical examination before entry into Hong Kong. Unlike other developed countries, Hong Kong has no screening policy for people from Mainland China for migration purpose. The aim of this project is to explore the possibilities for different screening policies for new immigrants in Hong Kong, similar to those adopted by developed countries. Objectives include: (a) review of research articles and (b) careful perusal of selected government documents. Electronic databases of research articles for migration screening policy and data from World Health Organization, United Nations and other international and local authorizes were searched and analyzed to suggest practical policies for Hong Kong. Findings indicate that most developed countries have implemented pre-arrival screening policy, which is not practical in Hong Kong. Studies showed no significant difference between ‘pre’, ‘on’ or ‘post’ arrival programmes. Post arrival screening could be considered as the most suitable option for Hong Kong, according to the analyses of the data. Tuberculosis and Chest Service, Department of Health has the capacity to act as the screening authority for settlement purpose and could provide expert recommendation to Immigration Department about the health status of permanent residency applicants. Given the importance of screening, in various countries, to reduce the incidence of TB, Hong Kong could and should adopt a screening policy in order to decrease new notifications and enhance the local public health status.

Abstract:
EMBA Project Report
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Commonly shared situational awareness is essential to the success of almost any team endeavor. Many information networks and processes in the military environment are specifically designed to collect, filter, package, and provide information. The mismanagement of time critical knowledge can result in delays in response and confusion when information regarding changes in the operational environment is not rapidly delivered to the right audience. This analysis provides recommendations for consideration of readily available information awareness tools to enhance this process. Our survey of information systems in present use reveals some non-desirous attributes and illuminates new concerns created as the result of the second order consequences of employing more complex and powerful systems. Some of these areas of concern include: • Increased exclusiveness of information to a narrow user community • Greater difficulty to alert a large group of forces to new and developing vital information in a rapidly changing dynamic situation. • Difficulty to alert and inform a large segment of the forces to a changing environment in a slowly developing situation. • Intermittently connected users lack a simple utility to become quickly updated with the latest information status. • Inability to provide information across architecture domains or security enclaves. • Inability to export and extend the information network to newly arriving participants. An analysis of the major fielded situational awareness systems including the Common Operational Picture (COP), Global Command and Control System-Maritime (GCCS-M), Collaboration at Sea (CAS) was conducted. Included also were Microsoft Chat and Really Simple Syndication (RSS) as candidate solutions. Each system or tool was first screened to identity those possessing the desired characteristic s of a potential solution. Then the qualifying systems were screened using a matrix of weighted factors. The assigned weighting factors were determined based on discussion with Subject Matter Experts provided by the client. RSS emerged as an affordable candidate satisfying most of the attributes of the desired solution. RSS provides a “Severe Weather Alert” service to a netted environment of information systems lacking this common cross domain capability. We conclude and recommend that RSS be further trialed and evaluated under exercise or controlled conditions to assess its potential usefulness as a “bell ringer” to enhance the group focus on significant and important situational developments.

As more and more resources become available online, the World Wide Web is turning into an important stakeholder in every individuals lives. Nevertheless, not every segment of the distinct populations worldwide is able to freely access and use it. A new approach of navigating the web, in which users make use of automated processes created by a community of volunteers, is presented in this dissertation. The primary intent of this approach is to help blind and functionally-illiterate users in navigating the web and accessing its resources. This, though, is only the starting point for further investigations with other populations with special needs. This dissertation presents a collaborative web system, designed on top of an existing tool, for improving web accessibility.

Rose, Julian. "Ionospheric imaging to improve GPS timing." Thesis, University of Bath, 2011. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.538290.

Full text
Abstract:
Single-frequency Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers do not accurately compensate for the ionospheric delays imposed upon GPS signals. This can lead to significant errors and single-frequency systems rely upon models to compensate. This investigation applies 4D (four-dimensional) ionospheric tomography to GPS timing for the first time. The tomographic algorithm, MIDAS (Multi-Instrument Data Analysis System), is used to correct for the ionospheric delay and the results are compared to existing single and dual-frequency techniques. Days during the solar maximum years 2002, 2003 and 2004 have been chosen to display results when the ionospheric delays are large and variable. Maps of the ionospheric electron density, across Europe, are produced by using data collected from a fixed network of dual-frequency GPS receivers. Results that improve upon the use of existing ionospheric models are achieved for fixed (static) and mobile (moving) GPS receiver scenarios. The effects of excluding all of the GPS satellites below various elevation masks, ranging from 5° to 40°, on timing solutions for fixed and mobile situations are also presented. The greatest timing accuracies when using the fixed GPS receiver technique are obtained by using the highest mask. The mobile GPS timing solutions are most accurate when satellites at lower elevations continue to be included. Furthermore, timing comparisons are made across baselines up to ~4000 km and the ionospheric errors are shown to increase with increasing baseline. GPS time transfer is then investigated and MIDAS is shown to improve the time transfer stabilities of a single-frequency GPS system. The results are comparable to the dual-frequency time transfer after ~2 hours averaging time. Overall, the MIDAS technique provides the most accurate and most stable results (comparable to dual-frequency) for a single-frequency based GPS system. Ionospheric corrections (via MIDAS) may be broadcast to users nationally or via the internet for example, opening up the possibility of improving the accuracy and stability of single-frequency GPS systems in real-time.

Abstract:

The disparities in healthcare and the challenges of healthcare leaders in achieving positive health outcomes are a priority in America. Much discourse and policy is currently evolving in the legislative and executive branches of government. The United States has the highest health expenditures in the world and is classified as one of the unhealthiest countries. Many factors contribute to the disparities. These factors include socioeconomic, cultural competency, social determinants, policy, and health leadership. The challenge for health leaders is to identify strategies to improve the trends and e the status of health quality and well-being for all Americans. This study employed qualitative research using a phenomenological approach; surveying healthcare leaders in the United States. Data collection employed in-depth interviews of healthcare leaders with at least two years of experience in their current role. This qualitative study identified challenges of leaders in health care, best practices of successful healthcare leaders to improve patient access, narrow the gap of health-related disparities, and evaluated techniques and methods to improve health outcomes across racial and ethnic groups.

Delivery Precision is a key performance indicator that measures Nike's ability to deliver product to the customer in full and on time. The objective of the six-month internship was to quantify areas in the supply chain where the most opportunities reside in improving delivery precision. The Nike supply chain starts when a new product is conceived and ends when the consumer buys the product at retail. In between conception and selling, there are six critical process steps. The project has provided a method to evaluate the entire supply chain and determine the area that has the most opportunity for improvement and therefore needs the most focus. The first step in quantifying the areas with the most opportunity was to identify a framework of the supply chain. The framework includes the target dates that must be met in order to supply product to the customer on schedule and the actual dates that were met. By comparing the target dates to the actual dates, the area of the supply process that caused the delay can be identified. Next a data model was created that automatically compares the target dates to actual dates for a large and specified set of purchase orders. The model uses the framework and compiles all orders to quantify the areas in the supply chain that create the most area for opportunity. The model was piloted on the North America geography, Women's Training category, Apparel product engine, and Spring 2013 season, for orders shipped to the Distribution Center (DC). The pilot showed that the most area for opportunity lies in the upstream process (prior to the product reaching the consolidator). In particular the pilot showed that the area with the most opportunity for the sample set was the PO create process. This conclusion was also confirmed with the Running category. The method developed during the internship provides Nike with a method to measure the entire supply chain. By quantifying the areas in the process, Nike can focus and prioritize their efforts on those areas that need the most improvement. In addition the model created can be scaled for any region, category, or product engine to ultimately improve delivery precision across the entire company.

Abstract:
Achieving energy efficiency has in recent times become a major concern of networking research due to the ever-escalating power consumption and CO2 emissions produced by large data networks. This problem is becoming more and more challenging because of the drastic traffic increase in the last few years and it is expected to be increased even more in the coming years. Using efficient energy-aware strategies that could overturn this situation by reducing the electricity consumption as well as mitigating the environmental impact of data transmission networks. However, CO2 and energy consumption cannot be considered proportionate if the means of electricity production differs. This research work focuses on reducing the environmental impact of data transmission network by implementing energy aware routing, where unused network devices will be put into sleep/shut down and high capacity links will be adapted according to demand requirement. But, alongside with energy, this work has introduced two different metrics namely carbon emission factor and non-renewable energy usage percentage, which are considered as objective functions for designing green network. Here a centralized approach like using Software-Defined Networking (SDN), is used for designing to solve this problem as they allow flexible programmability suitable for this problem. Our proposal proposes a routing technique using genetic algorithm that minimizes the number of network-elements required and at the same time adapt the bandwidth capacity while satisfying an incoming traffic load. Different from existing related works, we focus on optimizing not only energy consumption but also carbon emission and non-renewable energy consumption in SDN in order to close this important gap in the literature and provide solutions compatible with operational backbone networks. Complementing the general aim of improving the environmental impact of data transmission network, this research is also intended to cover important related features such as realistic large demand size, network performance, and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. At the same time this work focuses on network stability and analyzes the impact of network stability while implementing a green solution. Our work proposes a penalty and filtering mechanism which helps to find an optimal balance between stability and green networking. By using realistic input data, significant values of switched-off links and nodes are reached which demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm. The obtained result validated the importance of considering environmental factors rather than considering only energy. Results also show the trade-off between environmental and performance concerns, considering a couple of performance indicators. Moreover, it is shown that the penalty and filtering mechanism is an effective approach to avoid incoherent system and improve the stability of the system. As a whole, this conducted research and contributions reported through this manuscript stand as a valuable solution on the road to sustainable networking

Abstract:
Speaking is “the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non-verbal symbols, in a variety of contexts” (Chaney, 1998, p.13). Speaking is a crucial part of second language learning and teaching. Today’s world requires that the goal of teaching speaking should improve students’ communicative skills, because, only in this way, students can express themselves and learn how to follow the social and cultural rules appropriate in each communicative circumstance. Now many linguists and ESL teachers agree that students learn to speak in the second language by “interacting”.

Abstract:
The objective of this research was to gain insight into the key drivers of productive organisational energy and to determine whether there is a relationship between productive organisational energy and high performance in organisations. This study also aimed to identify key measures of success of organisations. Organisational energy has a critical role to play in driving both people behaviour and innovation in organisations, ultimately providing a competitive advantage. Both a quantitative and qualitative analysis was conducted on the data collected from four case study organisations, comprising a total sample size of 47 respondents. The research consisted of three phases. Phase One, which made use of an open-ended qualitative survey, was directed at industry experts who were required to identify and recommend four small- to medium- sized high-energy information technology organisations to be considered for this research. Phase Two consisted of gaining approval to conduct research within four of the recommended case study organisations, and conducting an open-ended exploratory face-to-face interview with each Managing Director, with the objective of determining the success, energy state, key drivers, and performance measures of the organisations, as well as the factors that drive the energy of staff. Furthermore, each Managing Director completed the same self-administered questionnaire that formed the basis of Phase Three. This structured survey was used to gather the perceptions and opinions of each organisation’s staff members in determining: the energy state of the organisation, the key drivers of organisational energy, and the link between organisation energy and performance. Statistical analysis techniques were used to determine whether significant relationships exist between the drivers of organisational energy and their respective rankings; and between organisational energy and organisational performance. The study provided evidence that intrapreneurial orientation, collective identity, employee investment and leadership are the most significant drivers of productive organisational energy and confirmed the existence of a significant relationship between productive organisational energy and high performance organisations. Through this research, a model has been developed that can be utilised by leaders of organisations to leverage organisational energy in order to improve and measure organisational performance, thereby creating a sustainable competitive advantage.

Abstract:
Integrated circuits have traveled a long way from being a general purpose microprocessor to an application specific circuit. It has become an integral part of the modern era of technology that we live in. As the applications and their complexities are increasing rapidly every day, so are the sizes of these circuits. With the increase in the design size, the associated testing effort to verify these designs is also increased. The goal of this thesis is to leverage some of the static analysis techniques to reduce the effort of testing and verification at the register transfer level. Studying a design at register transfer level gives exposure to the relational information for the design which is inaccessible at the structural level. In this thesis, we present a way to generate a Data Dependency Graph and a Control Flow Graph out of a register transfer level description of a circuit description. Next, the generated graphs are used to perform relation mining to improve the test generation process in terms of speed, branch coverage and number of test vectors generated. The generated control flow graph gives valuable information about the flow of information through the circuit design. We are using this information to create a framework to improve the branch reachability analysis mainly in terms of the speed. We show the efficiency of our methods by running them through a suite of ITC'99 benchmark circuits.

Melendez, Paul Louis. "Do Education Tax Credits Improve Equity?" Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194044.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1997 the Arizona legislature passed a public education tax credit bill that allowed state income tax payers a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for donations to public schools for extracurricular activities and character education programs. In the haste to get the bill passed there was no time for legislative review, staff analysis, or public scrutiny on the potential impact of the proposed bill. There should have been concern raised on whether the public education tax credit bill would result in an equitable distribution funds given that it was unlikely low-income families would participate, there was no guarantee that middle and upper-income families would designate their contributions to the neediest schools, and state law prohibited any redistribution of funds by school districts. This study quantitatively examined the distribution of education tax credit revenues in terms of student poverty/wealth among unified public school districts in Arizona over a three year time span. The relationship between per pupil education tax credit revenues and the percentage of students eligible for the free/reduced meal program was tested and measured among 92 unified public school districts using correlation and regression analysis for 2005, 2006, and 2007. By statistically examining the distribution of per pupil education tax credit revenues in terms of student poverty/wealth among unified public school districts in a time-series manner, the study aimed to determine if the public education tax credit program in Arizona had resulted in an equitable distribution of funds. The results of the study yielded the following findings. One, there was a strong negative association between the two variables of interest (r = -.58, p < .001). Two, the relationship between variables could be predicated (Y = -93.366x + 81.3) and the linear relationship between variables was statistically reliable (.33). Three, there was a negative beta weight (b = -93.366x) indicating that as a school district's percentage of the free/reduced meal program increased by one percentage point, the per pupil education tax credit decreased by 93 cents. This suggested that unified school districts with higher percentages of students eligible for the free/reduced meal program received lower per pupil education tax credit revenues.

Abstract:
When employees become dissatisfied at an organization, they may develop negative behaviors that can impede profits and productivity. The purpose of this single case study was to explore what strategies are essential for organizational leaders to improve workplace performance. Maslow's hierarchy of needs served as the conceptual framework for this study. Data collection involved face-to-face, semistructured interviews of 20 managers, floor employees, and clerical staff from a business organization in Southwest Georgia. Participant selection was based on employees' tenure of at least 1 year of experience within the organization. Interviews were transcribed and then coded for common patterns and themes. Five themes emerged: (a) workplace environment, focusing on the level of flexibility given to employees in the organization; (b) feedback sources in organizations, centering on measurable standards such as written evaluations and other resources provided to employees; (c) management relationships, focusing on managers' influence on the performance of employees; (d) barriers in the workplace, examining internal and external sources that impede performance; and (e) recruitment/promotion strategies, centering on the organization's compensation incentives. Study outcomes suggest that organizational leaders may increase employee work performance by enhancing strategies that provide a positive assortment of abilities, motivational tools, and opportunities. In addition, these findings suggest that collaborative decision making between management and employees has a positive relationship with work attitudes and the engagement of employees. Leaders in organizations may apply these findings to develop an enriched workplace environment, one that could improve employee retention rates and organizational commitment.

Abstract:
Marketing executives of traditional retail firms who lack strategies to expand e-commerce business, can experience inhibited growth, higher transaction costs, and a loss of competitive advantage. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore marketing strategies that marketing executives of a traditional retail firm used to improve online sales. Eight purposefully selected marketing executives in the head offices of a large traditional retail business in South Africa who had implemented effective marketing strategies to improve online sales participated in the study. Social exchange theory was the conceptual framework for the study. The data collection process entailed face-to-face semistructured interviews and review of company and industry-specific documentation. Data were coded and analyzed to identify emergent themes: the use of customer relationship management to drive marketing strategies; positive exchange relationships that are primarily measured in economic and benefit-orientated terms; trust that relies on safety, security, and privacy of transactions; and reciprocity in the relationship that is facilitated through electronic word of mouth and social media. The implications for positive social change from increased profitability include increased employment opportunities in the local community, improved working conditions and benefits for employees, and increased charitable contributions locally, thereby improving the quality of life for employees and the community.

Abstract:
Nonprofit leaders face challenges retaining volunteers to support their organizations' human resources. The shortage of volunteers threatens nonprofit sustainability with increasing personnel cost for maintaining quality services. Grounded by Burns's transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies nonprofit leaders from southeastern Michigan used to improve volunteer retention. Data were collected through face-to-face semistructured interviews with 3 nonprofit leaders and a review of organizational documents such as volunteer implementation plans, strategic plans, and volunteer committee notes. Data were analyzed using a methodological triangulation process of sorting comments, which involved a chronological review of the interview transcripts and a descriptive coding for emerging themes. Three distinct themes emerged from the data analysis: collaborative relationships improved volunteer retention, team motivations improved volunteer retention, and strategic communication improved volunteer retention. The findings from this study may contribute to positive social change by providing nonprofit leaders with a better understanding of the need to improve volunteer retention and leadership strategies as methods to continue building viable communities for those in need. Furthermore, the implications for positive social change could include the improvement of other nonprofit organizations and the well-being of the volunteers in the organization.

Abstract:
The nursing shortage and high turnover rates are a problem in the United States. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore leadership strategies that hospital senior nurse managers in the Rocky Mountain states use to improve nurse retention. Participants were 6 hospital senior nurse managers including 3 chief nursing officers, 1 assistant chief nursing officer, and 2 directors who had demonstrated effective leadership strategies in retention of nurses. The leadership-motivated excellence theory was the conceptual framework. Semistructured interviews with open-ended interview questions were used to collect data; organization websites and documents were used to help corroborate evidence for triangulation. Data were analyzed using Yin's data analysis method. The major themes were leadership and retention strategies. The leadership strategies were senior nurse managers guiding, coaching, and mentoring registered nurses, and the retention strategies were tools used to motivate and retain registered nurses. The results may bring about positive social change by providing hospitals with leadership strategies to retain nurses. Improved retention rates of registered nurses may enhance the competitive advantage for hospitals by improving patient satisfaction scores and improving care. This improvement may result in increased hospital reimbursements and may influence organizational commitment to improving patient outcomes.

Abstract:
Small businesses are considered the backbone of the U.S. economy with significant contributions in the areas of job creation and economic development. However, 79% of small businesses fail within the first 5 years. This multiple case study aimed to explore strategies and knowledge of resources that owners of small businesses used to sustain business operations for longer than the first 5 years. The population included 5 minority owners of small businesses in Texas. Chaos theory formed the conceptual framework. The data collection process included semistructured interviews, member checks, field notes, company artifacts, and archival documents. Data were analyzed using Yin's data analysis steps of compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding. Three themes emerged from the analysis: effective management of the business environment, effective planning, and business owners' skills and knowledge. The U.S. Small Business Administration, local chambers of commerce, and owners of small businesses may benefit from the findings of this study by gaining an understanding of successful minority owners of small businesses' implemented strategies that enable business success and profitability. The implications of this study for positive social change include identifying sustainable strategies minority owners of small businesses can use to advance business growth, increase financial security, achieve employee job sustainability, and potentially stimulate the local community with job creation.

Abstract:
The focus on school improvement has been driven at a national level through Government initiatives and the increasingly high profile of the Ofsted Inspection frameworks and procedures. The latter, in particular, has made schools very accountable for pupil outcomes. This in turn has impacted on leaders in schools, who, as part of the Ofsted Inspection framework, are given a separate judgment for their performance (Ofsted 2015). Since 2012 middle leaders have featured in the Ofsted framework descriptors used to judge leadership and management in a school. This study explores the perceptions and development of middle leaders, in one North West London secondary school, regarding their development and contribution to whole school improvement. The research suggests that while the vast majority of middle leaders did not have a full understanding of distributed leadership as a construct, they did however, consider themselves to be drivers in the school, described by three as ‘the cogs in the engine’. Positive partnerships with senior leaders and school improvement groups, in this institution, were cited by some as key features of middle leaders’ contribution to whole school improvement. The analysis of findings highlighted the positive impact of leaders working together and identifies a construct of distributed and inclusive leadership. I carried out the study within my own school as headteacher researcher. A key finding has been the significant benefit for a headteacher to do research as an insider. The experience of headteacher researcher has further ignited my longstanding passion of deepening and extending understanding and knowledge about our roles as leaders in schools.

How does Good Laboratory Practice improve quality?

Background: The quality systems that steer manufacturing of pharmaceutical products from the testing phase to commercial manufacturing are the national and international regulatory frameworks and legislation. Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) is a quality system concerned with the organizational process and the conditions under which non-clinical health and environmental safety studies are planned, performed, monitored, recorded, archived and reported. In Sweden the Medical Products Agency monitors and regulates compliance with the principles of Good Laboratory Practice.

Aim: The aim of our thesis is to explore the reasons why companies/laboratories adopt Good Laboratory Practice. We shall do this by identifying the advantages and disadvantages of adopting GLP principles for companies/laboratories, and how quality is improved by adopting GLP principles. We have summarized our aim in one principal question: How does Good Laboratory Practice function as a tool for quality improvement?

Limitations: We will focus on GLP, and this thesis will not consider other Good Practice procedures such as Good Manufacturing Practice or Good Clinical Practice. Only laboratories in Sweden monitored by the Medical Products Agency are targeted in the empirical part of this work.

Method: Literature research and interviews with GLP contact persons listed by MPA.

Results and conclusions: Though costumers’ needs and legislation seem to be the motivations for companies deciding to comply with GLP, quality improvement seems to be the biggest advantage of validation.

Proposal for further research: Do laboratory assistants and technical employees differ from management in their experience and views on GLP?

Abstract:
The introduction of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) substantially reduced malaria-related mortality and morbidity during the past decade. Despite the widespread use of ACT, there is still a considerable knowledge gap with regards to safety, efficacy and pharmacokinetic properties of these drugs, particularly in vulnerable populations like children and pregnant women. In addition, there is growing evidence of widespread artemisinin-resistance across the Greater Mekong Subregion. Expedited delivery of novel antimalarial drugs with different mechanisms of action to the clinical setting is still far off; therefore, it is crucial to improve the use of existing antimalarial drugs for optimal outcome in order to prolong their therapeutic life span. This thesis focuses on utilizing pharmacometric tools to support this effort for malaria prevention and treatment. An extensive simulation framework was used to explore alternative malaria chemopreventive dosing regimens of a commonly used ACT, dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine. Different monthly and weekly dosing regimens were evaluated and this allowed an understanding of the interplay between adherence, loading dose and malaria incidence. A weekly dosing regimen substantially improved the prevention effect and was less impacted by poor adherence. This is also expected to reduce selection pressure for development of resistance to piperaquine. Population pharmacokinetics-pharmacodynamic models were developed for artesunate and the active metabolite dihydroartemisinin, effect on parasite clearance, in patients with artemisinin-resistant and -sensitive malaria infections in Southeast Asia. The modeling identified an association between parasite density and drug bioavailability. It predicted the presence of high levels of artemisinin resistant infection among patients in Cambodia and its spread into Myanmar. A nomogram to identify patients with artemisinin resistant infections was developed. Furthermore, the model was used to demonstrate the need for extended treatment duration to treat patients with artemisinin resistant infections. A population pharmacokinetic model developed from data on pregnant women in East Africa allowed further understanding of artemether-lumefantrine exposure in pregnant populations. It also suggested that the lumefantrine exposure in this population is not compromised. In summary, the results presented in this thesis demonstrate the value of pharmacometric approaches for improving antimalarial drug treatment and prevention. This ultimately contributes to overcoming the prevailing challenges to malaria control.

Abstract:
This work explores the use of Interactive Visualisations to solve Exam Timetabling problems by making use of new graphical representations and interactions. Exam Timetabling is a. well researched topic in optimisation, however existing automated solutions are limited in terms of interactivity and generality. In cognitive science relevant literature shows how different representations can affect the outcome of problem solving tasks yet existing timetabling systems and research focus almost exclusively on automated approaches. not making use of available human abilities. These shortcomings of current approaches are addressed. raising the questions: Can effective representations be used to completely solve Exam Timetabling problems without use of computer automation and can such representations be effectively integrated with existing approaches? Previous research suggests that closely mapped expressive representations can be effective problem solving tools. In this research representational design methodologies were applied to develop two systems capable ofsolving complete problems. rather thanjust improving existing solutions. VAST (Visual Analysis and Scheduling for Tl1Detabling) provides interactive visualisations to solve Exam Timetabling Problems and introduces novel Cluster Group visualisations to simplify the problem faced by users. KNIGHT (Knowledge Interactive Guided Heuristic Timetabling) extends these interactive visualisations to include human in the loop interactivity integrated with existing automated heuristics. The application of mobilities to the domain of Exam Timeta~ling allow heuristic searches to be guided toward new solutions, expanding potential search neighbourhoods whilst excluding solutions that are perceived to be problematic. An evaluation of KNIGHT is presented which discusses this approach. The evaluation of VAST provides positive evidence for the use of interactive visualisation as an integral part of the problem solving process and our analysis shows the discovery of different user strategies that make use of these new interactions and representations. Whilst the use of exam clusters appears beneficial no significant benefits were found from allowing initial exam assignments.

Abstract:
In consulting firms one of the goals is to have the consultants on an assignment with an external client to bring in capital. In some consulting firms, when the consultants are not on an assignment with a client, they work on internal projects until a new assignment arrives. Since most of the team members do not work for more than a few days or weeks on the projects, it leads to a high team member turnover. In projects with such a turnover, problems such as hasty handovers, unclear roles and responsibilities and low-quality documentation may occur. The purpose of this thesis was to create guidelines to improve teamwork in teams with a high team member turnover. This thesis was based on a case study of a company specializing in information technology and management consulting. To begin to tackle this problem, a literature review was conducted and the data was collected by conducting interviews. The interviews were performed with team members that had been on a project for the longest and shortest period of time in order to identify problems from different perspectives. Based on the interviews and the literature study, guidelines were created to counteract the problems experienced in this type of volatile teams. The guidelines are categorized in four areas: processes, resources, people and long-term perspective. The areas cover the problems experienced and can be ultimately implemented in all teams with high team member turnover to improve teamwork in software projects.

Abstract:
Data warehouse management is fast becoming one of the most popular and important topics in industries today. For business executives, it promises significant competitive advantage for their companies, while presenting the information system managers a way to overcome the obstructions in providing business information to managers and other users. Here the company is going through the problem of inefficient performance of its data warehouse. To find an appropriate solution to this problem we first try to understand the data warehouse concept and its basic architecture, followed by an in depth study of the company data warehouse and the various issues affecting it. We propose and evaluate a set of solutions including classification of suppliers, implementing corporate commodity classification and coding system, obtaining level three spend details for PCard purchases, etc. The experimental results show considerable improvement in the data quality and the data warehouse performance. We further support these recommendations by evaluating the return on investment for improved quality data. Lastly, we discuss the future scope and other possible improvement techniques for obtaining better results.

Abstract:
Pneumocystis carinii is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that causes lifethreatening pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals. Infants appear to be particularly susceptible to Pneumocystis (PC) pulmonary infections. The higher incidence of PC as well as other pulmonary infections among infants is likely due to an immature immune system. The neonatal lung environment is deficient immunologically in preterm as well as term infants (1, 2). Decreased phagocytic capacity of macrophages in newborns may increase the risk of infection from inhaled pathogens (1, 2). We have previously demonstrated that there is approximately a 3-week delay in the clearance of PC organisms from pup mouse lungs compared to adults. Herein, we demonstrate that there is also a 1-week delay in the infiltration of AMs in pup compared to adult PC-infected mice. We go on to show that there is a delay in pup versus adult lung macrophage phenotypic expression and cytokine production in response to PC organisms. We demonstrated that pup AMs are competent to produce cytokine in response to LPS and that stimulation with zymosan generates cytokine production in pup AMs that is comparable to adult cytokine production. These data indicate that pup lung macrophages are specifically poorly responsive to PC organisms and likely require exogenous stimulation to mount a significant immune response and expedite clearance of the organism. We go on to show that heat-killed Escheriae coli improves cytokine response, cellular infiltration and reduces organism burden in PC-infected pup mice. The clinically relevant cytokine, GM-CSF, has been used to improve the clearance of several pulmonary infections, including PC in adult animal models. We show that monotherapy with GM-CSF is insufficient to improve PC clearance in pup mice; however, when combined with TMP/SMX it improves PC clearance and maintains a reduced PC burden following discontinuation of therapy. Furthermore, we have shown that GM-CSF improves the ability of human infant lung macrophages to phagocytose PC organsms without generating an increased inflammatory response. These data suggest that combination therapy with TMP/SMX and GM-CSF may be a viable treatment option for infants failing or intolerant to standard therapy.

Nelson, Eisha Amanda. "Changes and solutions to improve humanitarian aid." Thesis, Webster University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1526651.

Abstract:

The 1990s saw a rise in the participation of NGOs answering the demands of affected populations caught in between armed conflicts, bouts of natural disasters and diseases. Though their intentions were good, it was from this point onwards NGOs have gained their notoriety, despite the work they do to address the needs of man. With a consistent rise of the number of actively participating NGOs, these humanitarian actors have since gone under scrutiny by the general population, which range from ineffective operations, scandals surrounding aid money, ethics within humanitarianism as well as many aid organizations that still remain independent from each other.

This paper will seek to answer how to improve the role of humanitarian aid in emergency situations, and address its issues and shortcomings. This will be done by analyzing the different criticisms faced by these humanitarian actors, as well as analyzing the different solutions that have since been proposed in order to answer these criticisms and find a new way for these organizations to operate and define themselves. Finally, these analyses will be evaluated and compared among one another.

Interviews have been held with aid workers and members of humanitarian organizations, in order to get a more intimate perspective of the inside workings of an NGO. Recent literature, studies and findings have also been utilized in order to get a clearer picture of the current state of humanitarian aid, notably from writers such as Thomas Weiss, Hugo Slim, David Rieff and Linda Polman.

Humanitarian aid cannot be cured with a simple solution; instead, it is an ongoing, gradual process that requires cooperation from governments and organizations in order to move forward. The non-protit sector can stand to learn a lot from the for-profit sector, especially in terms of professionalism and collaborating amongst one another. This change will not come easily, but humanitarian aid also cannot remain stagnant if they hope to reach out to populations in need with quality aid.

Blocker, Joe. "Using Multimedia Metadata to Improve Network Efficiency." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/17326.

Abstract:
A growing amount of multimedia information exists online, commonly referred to as the multimedia explosion. Many research efforts are focused on the concept that computing is ubiquitous and that accessing network resources is not the challenge, but rather finding the right object is. However, Americas military and other first responder organizations often find themselves in austere environments where access to network resources is scarce, and where every bit transmitted has to count. In this thesis we design a unique Lead-Me protocol that addresses both network access and finding the right data; but focuses on maximizing network efficiency by utilizing metadata information commonly found within multimedia files. We start by exploring other techniques commonly used to network efficiency, and then move to develop a protocol that fills the gaps. We use an intelligent middleware server that the client communicates to, direction-of-travel-aligned bounding boxes and mashup technology to reduce the size of the file the client receives as a response, and optimization techniques to prevent the client from receiving redundant files. We show an increase in efficiency of over 99 per cent by using the middleware server, and an increase of 11per cent using the optimization techniques.
