Abstract:
Since Sacks’ pioneering work in the 1970s, storytelling has become a favourite topic of research within conversation analysis. Scholars have examined storytelling from the point of view of sequential organization (Jefferson 1978), participation organization (Goodwin 1984), story co-telling (Duranti 1986, Mandelbaum 1987, Lerner 1992), displays of epistemic statuses (Schegloff 1988), and action formation (M. Goodwin 1982, 1990; Mandelbaum 1993; Beach 2000; Beach & Glenn 2011; Wu 2011, 2012). Work has also been done on the management of storytelling in the context of other, concurrent activities (Goodwin 1984, Goodwin & Goodwin 1992, Mandelbaum 2010, Haddington et al. 2014). The aim of this paper is to apply the many insights that researchers have accumulated since Sacks to the analysis and understanding of a single instance of storytelling in a Cantonese conversation. A detailed, step-by-step unpacking of this story will reveal how the contingencies of an interaction, including the interplay of multiple contexts, may leave fine-grained imprints on the shape and character of a story.

Abstract:
Life and work on the refugee journey are among the latest contemporary challenges that instigate to look and to research. In order to enhance the discussion, it was considered pertinent to pay attention to the experience of looking at the image. We took the woodcut Day and Night, art by Maurits Cornelius Escher, which alludes to the migratory movement of birds, because it also provokes the look, given the characteristics that the artist imprints on it. The concepts of smooth and striated space, by Deleuze and Guattari, imbricated in a reference regarding the refugee situation, were taken as the theoretical basis for the discussion. The conversation between image and theory broadened the look beyond bureaucratic, legal and statistical issues, often associated with studies about refugees and allowed pointing out relationships of continuity and coexistence in their ways of living and working. It is understood that, by provoking the experience of the look, the image can be captured, cut, reduced, enlarged, twisted, in an effort of meaning not necessarily obvious.

Abstract:
The notion of the perinatal „hormonal imprinting” has been published at first in 1980 and since that time it spred expansively. The imprintig develops at the first encounter between the developing receptor and the target hormone – possibly by the alteration of the methylation pattern of DNA – and it is transmitted to the progeny generations of the cell. This is needed for the complete development of the receptor’s binding capacity. However, molecules similar to the target hormone (hormone-analogues, drugs, chemicals, environmental pollutants) can also bind to the developing receptor, causing faulty imprinting with life-long consequences. This can promote pathological conditions. Later it was cleared that in other critical periods such as puberty, imprinting also can be provoked, even in any age in differentiating cells. The central nervous system (brain) also can be mistakenly imprinted, which durably influences the dopaminergic, serotonergic and noradrenergic system and this can be manifested – in animal experiments – in alterations of the sexual and social behavior. In our modern age the faulty hormonal imprintig is inavoidable because of the mass of medicaments, chemicals, the presence of hormone-like materials (e.g. soya phytosteroids) in the food, and environmental pollutants. The author especially emphasizes the danger of oxytocin, as a perinatal imprinter, as it is used very broadly and can basically influence the emotional and social spheres and the appearance of certain diseases such as auitism, schizophrenia and parkinsonism. The danger of perinatal imprinters is growing, considering their effects on the human evolution. Orv. Hetil., 2013, 154, 128–135.

Abstract:
A statesman of Canada, Pierre Elliot Trudeau (1918—2000), a Liberal Prime Minister in 1968—1979, 1980—1984, is the author of the “patriation” of the Constitution of 1982, which included a universal Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and of the law on official bilingualism. Trudeau defended the integrity of state from the threats of supporters of extremist forms of separatism that arose among the radical nationalists of the French-speaking province of Quebec, directing federal-provincial contradictions into the political and legal channel. Trudeau was inspired by the concept of “One Canada” and the philosophy of “Just Society”, combining the ideas of the supremacy of individual freedoms with the high responsibility of the state, social measures with equal linguistic and cultural development of Francophones and Anglophones as parts of a single political nation. Trudeau’s enduring legacy also includes the abolition of the death penalty, the end of the discrimination of homosexuals, the simplification of divorce proceedings, multiculturalism and anti-poverty measures. The foreign policy course also bore the imprint of Trudeau’s ideas of justice in a changing global world. He initiated the diversification of international relations, collaborated with socialist countries, defended detente and nuclear security, reducing Canada’s participation in NATO and removing nuclear missiles from the country’s territory.

Abstract:
Biopolitics is the study of the relationship between our biological makeup and our political behavior. While this line of inquiry can be traced back to Plato and Aristotle, the contemporary surge of interest dates from the middle 1960s. Among the major contributing factors then were—take your pick—James C. Davies' Human Nature in Politics (1963), a 1964 essay by Lynton K. Caldwell, and a panel chaired by Albert Somit at the Southern Political Science Association (1967). Over the past two decades, there has been a dramatic growth of interest in “biopolitics,” as the area came to be known, to the point where some 900 works have now appeared (Peterson and Somit, in press).A variety of indicators testify to the acceptance that biopolitics has since achieved within the discipline: formal recognition by the International Political Science Association (1972); biopolitical articles in our leading professional journals; books bearing the imprint of leading publishers; the regular inclusion of panels on biology and politics at regional, national, and international conferences; support from major foundations, such as the Rockefeller and Lilly Foundations; awards by NSF and NIA for biopolitical research; the establishment of the Association for Politics and the Life Sciences (1981) and its journal, Politics and the Life Sciences (1982) and, most recently, recognition by the American Political Science Association of biopolitics as an “organized subfield.”

Abstract:
Skin ridges (dermatoglyphs or fingerprints) are a characteristic pattern of sulci on the skin of primates which appear on the entire hand palm and on the soles of the feet. Fingerprints are unique, irremovable and invariable which allows bio-identification of specific individuals. The aim of the study was to investigate the usefulness of the analysis of the average width of the skin ridges in archaeological research by analyzing the foot and hand prints found on 7 artifacts dating from the Middle Ages. An attempt was made to describe the preserved skin slate prints, as well as details of the construction of the prints. The fingers used in forming the pottery were recognized. Attempts were made to read the context of individual impressions. In the study, the following features were analyzed: legibility and suitability of the left imprint for the analysis, the possibility of determining the type of figures (whorls, loops, archs), the possibility of determining the minutiae, the density of the skin ridges left on the surface of the ceramics and the width of the skin ridges left on the surface of the ceramics. The classification of fingerprint minutiae proposed by Czesław Grzeszyk (1970) was used as well as classification of epidermal ridges peoposed by Lestrange (1953) and modified by Bochenska (1964) and Rogucka (1968). Analysis of the material allowed to conclude that imprints left on building ceramics can be as useful as those imprinted on utilitarian ceramics, despite differences in the composition of the raw material used in production. However, they require more skill to examine, as the impressions are often incomplete which may be related to the fillers added to the mass. Minutiae were evident on the impressions examined, and single bifurcation was the most common form. The tactile figure most commonly found on the fingertip impressions was the loop. It was not possible to delineate Galton lines due to the wiping of the triple ray. Due to the high illegibility of the prints, it was assumed with a high degree of uncertainty that the fingerprints belonged to adults, but the gender could not be determined. Noteworthy were the prints printed on the brick belonging to children. On the mentioned artifact, there is a footprint of a child aged 1–3 years and a handprint of a crawling infant, which allowed us to conclude that the children were under the care of craftsmen.

Full text
Abstract:
The genetic information contributed by eggs and spermatozoa to development of embryos to term has until recently been assumed to be equivalent. However, evidence now suggests that in the mouse and perhaps in all mammals the parental genomes have complementary roles during embryogenesis and both are essential for development to term (Surani, Barton & Norris, 1984; McGrath & Solter, 1984a; Cattanach & Kirk, 1985; Surani, 1986). Functional differences between the parental genomes presumably arise as a consequence of specific modifications of homologous chromosomes in the germline, when they are segregated and exposed to different epigenetic factors during oogenesis and spermatogenesis. These ‘imprinted’ modifications of parental chromosomes are then brought together following fertilization and subsequently propagated to influence events throughout development. It is also essential that at some stage of ontogeny the specific modifications are reversed and the whole process repeated in the formation of new germ cells.

Full text
Abstract:
Genomic imprinting is an epigenetic mechanism that differentially regulates the expression of certain genes, resulting in expression from only one parental allele. In mammals, genomic imprinting occurs in the placenta of both eutherians and marsupials, and plays an important role in regulating nutrition and growth of the developing fetus. The mammary gland also provides a critical source of nutrition for the neonate in all mammals, but there are few imprinting studies of this organ. Marsupials deliver tiny, altricial young that complete development during an extended lactation. INS (insulin) is paternally expressed in the eutherian and marsupial yolk sac and curiously is the only gene that is solely imprinted in this organ (1, 2). Insulin regulates carbohydrate metabolism, protein synthesis and cell growth. Insulin, (plus cortisol and prolactin) is required for the onset of lactation and the synthesis of milk (3). We characterised INS expression and examined its imprint status in the mammary gland of the tammar wallaby. INS mRNA is expressed in the mammary gland of the tammar from birth and throughout of lactation with highest expression at the initiation of lactation (Phase 1-2a) and around Phase 3 of lactation. Direct sequencing of 7 individuals at various stages of lactation confirmed that INS is imprinted in the mammary gland. Surprisingly, INS may also be imprinted in several other organs in the adult and juvenile wallaby. Preliminary bisulfite sequencing suggests there is a differentially methylated region located upstream of INS which may help to regulate INS expression. This is the first study to identify INS imprinting outside the yolk sac. As INS is critical for lactation, this is also the first indication that genomic imprinting may regulate lactation, suggesting that imprinting in the mammary gland may be as critical for post-natal survival as placental imprinting is for pre-natal development. Abstract:
tudy of philopatry and dispersal of pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca was launched on the Courish Spit (SE Baltic) in 1981. Since then, ca. 9,000 nestlings were ringed at different sites in the Russian part of the Courish Spit. A total of 557 individuals ringed as pulli were recaptured in subsequent seasons in the study area. Both males and females are more often recaptured in the plots where they were ringed than in other plots. These results were interpreted in the framework of the hypothesis forwarded by Löhrl (1959) and supported by Berndt & Winkel (1979). These authors suggested that cavity nesters (pied flycatchers and collared flycatchers F. albicollis) imprint their future local breeding area during the period of postfledging exploration. Birds that survive until the next spring, return to these imprinted areas to breed. A similar study done by Sokolov et al. (1984) on the Courish Spit in an open nesting species, the chaffinch Fringilla coelebs, confirmed this finding. We assumed that juvenile pied flycatchers disperse for varying distances during their postfledging movements and imprint a local area, some 1–5 kilometres in diameter. This area is the goal of their migration next spring. It is suggested that in spring, yearlings are non–randomly distributed in respect to the area they have imprinted as juveniles. Recently, Vysotsky (2000, 2001) re–analysed the same data on philopatry of pied flycatchers on the Courish Spit and forwarded an alternative hypothesis. He suggests that juveniles, both males and females, do not imprint any local area during the postfledging period, but are distributed randomly across the area of several dozens of kilometres in spring. Vysotsky was able to show that distribution of distances of natal dispersal did not differ from the random pattern the study plot which was an 8.5 km long line of nest boxes along the Courish Spit. The aim of this study was to test these two alternative hypotheses. To do so, we set up nine new study plots in 2000. Over 800 nest–boxes were made available for the birds (in addition to the old 400) in the 44 km long area. We recaptured pied flycatchers returning for breeding during four years, 2000–2003. The distribution of natal dispersal distances was compared with the null model which assumes that pied flycatchers settle randomly in the study area. We took all nest boxes from which pied flycatchers successfully fledged in a particular year and all next boxes where we were able to capture either a male or a female in the subsequent year, and calculated the distances between each pair of such nest boxes. Simulations were run separately for each sex. Theoretical distributions already include control efficiency. If some nest boxes were not checked in some year, or if we failed to capture one or both members of a breeding pair, we did not include this nest box inthe model. Some birds could settle outside the study plot. Therefore, the theoretical distribution may underestimate the actual range of natal dispersal, but is unlikely to overestimate it. The number of females ringed as nestlings and recaptured as one–year–old birds was 43. The distribution of their natal distances (mean 6,8 km, SE = 0,81; median 5,4 km) was not significantly different from the pattern predicted by the null model (Wilcoxon matched pairs test: z = 1,25; p = 0,21). Conversely, males settled significantly closer to their natal nest box (n = 83; mean 4,3 km, SE = 0,57; median 2,5 km) than predicted by the model (Wilcoxon matched pairs test: z = 2,45; p = 0,014). For example, 24% of males settle within one km from their natal site, as compared with 7% predicted by the model. Males are found with a greater than chance probability within the 7 km zone around their natal site. The hypothesis by Vysotsky (2000) can thus be rejected for pied flycatcher males. Pied flycatcher females are known to settle at larger distances from their natal nest box. The very fact that were controlled 83 males and only 43 females suggests, assumed that sex ratio at fledging is close to being equal and that true survival rates during the first year of life do not differ greatly between the sexes, that many females emigrated from of our study plot. This does not mean that juvenile females do not imprint a home area during the postfledging period, as suggested by Vysotsky (2000). We think that the reason for this is not the inadequate navigational ability of the females but the fact that they were attracted by a prospecting male at some distance from their migratory destination and settle there. Such intercepting was suggested by Fedorov (1996) for Acrocephalus warblers, and it may exist in other migratory passerines. This is supported by the data on natal site fidelity from Spain which show that in Spanish pied flycatcher populations, recruitment rate did not differ between female and male juveniles (Potti & Montalvo, 1991). Females from these southern populations have a limited chance to be attracted by prospecting males in even more southern areas.

The subject of this thesis is to examine the importance of the "micro-press" of the chilean opposition during its struggle against the military dictatorship, between 1973 and 1989. The historical events of the coup and their effects are analyzed in three main parts : the media control, the censorship and the general framework of physical, psychological and cultural repression, through unpublished testimonies. Next, the author deals with the problem of the internal exile : the underground press and his personal involvement in the resistance movement. The third section examines the steps followed in the publication of the micro-media press of the external exile, micro-media from outside chile, using as an example the making and circulation of newsletters in venezuela and europe. Such an approach sheds light on the experiences, problems of integration and acculturation of the exiles themselves. To sum up, the thesis is an analysis of the ability of the chilean people to recall their unyielding resistance, by literary means, faced with the establishment of an authoritarian government

Abstract:
Measuring urinary tobacco specific nitrosamine 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) and its glucuronide conjugate may provide the best biomarker of tobacco smoke lung carcinogen metabolism. Existence of differences in the extent of NNAL metabolism rates may be potentially related to an individuals’ lung cancer susceptibility. Low concentrations of NNAL in smokers urine (<1 ng/mL) require sensitive and selective methods for analysis. Traditionally, this involves extensive, time-consuming sample preparation that limits throughput and adds to measurement variability. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been developed for the analysis of urinary NNAL by offline cartridge extraction combined with LC-MS/MS. This method when reproduced demonstrated problems with matrix effects. In the first part of this work, investigation of matrix effects and related problems with sensitivity for the published offline extraction method has been conducted. In order to address the need to improve throughput and other analytical figures of merit for the original method, the second part of this work deals with development of a high-throughput online microfluidic method using capillary-columns packed with MIP beads for the analysis of urinary NNAL. The method was validated as per the FDA guidance, and enabled low volume, rapid analysis of urinary NNAL by direct injection on a microfluidic column packed with NNAL specific MIP beads. The method was used for analysis of urinary NNAL and NNAL-Gluc in smokers. Chemometric methods were used with this data to develop a potential cancer-risk-assessment tool based on pattern recognition in the concentrations of these compounds in urine. In the last part, method comparison approaches for the online and the offline sample extraction techniques were investigated. A ‘fixed’ range acceptance criterion based on combined considerations of method precision and accuracy, and the FDA bioanalytical guidance limits on precision and accuracy was proposed. Data simulations studies to evaluate the probabilities of successful transfers using the proposed criteria were performed. Various experimental designs were evaluated and a design comprised of 3 runs with 3 replicates each with an acceptance range of ±20% was found appropriate. The off-line and the on-line sample extraction methods for NNAL analysis were found comparable using the proposed fixed range acceptance criteria.

The cataloguing of engravings found in printed works allows us to constitute a continuous reference file. In the case of henri 4th, a precise picture of the legend can be drawn up based on iconographical study. Methodology an artificial unit of measurement had to be created in the form of a description file. A thesaurus was used to obtain a homogeneous description. It was thus possible to analyse 1,100 engravings in 461 books. It was therefore necessary to computerize this data in order to perceive the iconographical evolution of henri 4th throughout these centuries. Conclusions the representations of henri 4th oscillate indefinitely between reality and legend since the first bourbon king, conscious of the propaganda involved, deliberately looked to forge a political image so as to legitimize his crown. The engravings participate directly in the formulating of this myth by continuously updating the character. The 19th century saw his ultimate transformation into the popular king of today. Abstract:
The modernization of the late nineteenth century in Latin America was presented as an economic project that both would modify the existing social and cultural paradigms and contribute to overcoming the colonial remnants that were still anchored in society. An analysis of the advertisements that were published in print media in Chile and Colombia between 1870 and 1914 has allowed us to appreciate a discursive order of consumption practices related to the modernization being established and how this new exchange goods and services model altered the habits and customs of the society. To advance in the understanding the link between advertising and modernization, we turn to the guidelines set forth by the new cultural history, the Frankfurt School, specifically the approach developed by Jürgen Habermas on the public sphere and the contributions developed by the contemporary British and Latin American cultural studies. Methodologically, we proceeded with the search and selection of a representative corpus of advertising campaigns. Subsequently, such campaigns were classified and systematized according to the method of analysis of press coverage of information. Finally, we examine the processes of production, circulation and consumption, as well as the meaning effects, uses and meanings of this kind of discourse in the Latin American society

In order to building a spoken or written text, regardless of gender that it is being carried out, the speaker uses linguistic features such as semantic-argumentative strategies intending to guide the interlocutor to certain conclusions. The modalization and polyphony, accordingly, are phenomena that allow the speaker to leave printed his subjectivity in the content of the statements, while acting according to his interlocutor. Focusing in these discussions, this investigation aims to show that modalization and polyphony reveal, linguistically, subjectivity in the digest genre, acting therefore as argumentation features. It is a qualitative research, descriptive and interpretative, which adopts the theoretical and methodological principles of Argumentative Semantics. The corpus consists of ten digests collected in six editions of the Jornal de Resenhas, of the Discurso Editorial, ISSN 1984-6282, published in 2009, 2010 and 2012. The theoretical discussions concerning the Argumentation Theory of Language have based in Ducrot (1994, 1987, 1988), Espíndola (2004), Nascimento (2005, 2009), Koch (2006a, 2006b) and others arguing about the theory approach. The modalization is discussed under the postulates of Castilho and Castilho (1993), Koch (2006b), Cervoni (1989), Nascimento (2009), Neves (2011a), Palmer (2011) and García Negroni (2011). Besides, it was used as theoretical basis, Foucault (2011), Bakhtin (2010a, 2010b), Marcuschi (2008) and others to the formulations about the digest genre. The analysis reveals that digesters use modalization and the polyphony of speakers as phenomena that ultimately report the speakers‟ subjectivity in relation to the view of the voices of other speakers, that is, as a discursive strategy that guides the way the text of the digest should be read. Thus, the gender digest is defined as a place of interaction of voices and subjective impressions through which the speaker summarizes praises, criticizes and evaluates the most diverse academic intellectual productions.

Abstract:
My dissertation examines the traces of inverse (mytho)mysticism, more synchronous with mythical alchemy than transcendent mystery, in H.D.’s mature work (1946-1961). Whereas H.D.’s earliest works respond to a fin de siècle occultism and a collective psyche troubled by the eschatological distress that, as Susan Acheson writes, “was widespread amongst modernist writers grappling with …world events and with the implications of Nietzsche’s inaugural annunciation of modernity in terms of the death of God” (187), her later oeuvre is dedicated to the same work of soul undertaken by the “secret cult of Night” in Vale Ave. Here, her thematic scope faces two ways: backward to ancient Greek mystery cults and their palingenesic rites and forward to depth psychologists searching for the Soul of the World. Vale Ave plays a pronounced role in my study as symbolic guide; in its seventy-four sequences the layering of time in the “trilogy” of past, present, and future that H.D. had explored during the years of the Second World War in order to get behind the fallen walls of cause and effect collapses into two distinct phases of human origin—“meeting” (evolution) and “parting” (involution)—and the poem invites Lilith and Lucifer to be its archetypal guides. My method for the study is imaginal, entering such disciplines as history, philosophy, and theology and bringing psychological understanding to them. John Walsh’s introduction to Vale Ave notes H.D.’s theme “that the human psyche exists in a dimension outside of time and space as well as within them. In Vale Ave, H.D. presents the extremity of this dual-dimensionality: metempsychosis” (vii). However, the concept that H.D. investigates is more than a literary processus of characters who adopt different masks and appear at various junctures in a chronological unwinding of history. I explore H.D.'s works as part of a Modernist tradition of writing “books of the dead” designed not to guide the soul after death, but to draw the gaze upon “a nearer thing,” as H.D. writes in Erige Cor Tuum Ad Me In Caelum, the wisdom intrinsic in the spirit of life itself.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 1946, the first Palestinian book fair took place at the Arab Orthodox Union Club in Jerusalem. What lay behind this event was a process that paralleled the political life revolving around the formation of local nationalism, a complex process of cultural and literary development within the Arab Nahda (‘Awakening’ or Renaissance) movement in which the Palestinians left their imprint through the press, literature, translation and other cultural fields. This chapter discusses the cultural environment of Khalīl Baydas and Iskandar al-Khūrī al-BeitJālī who initiated the modern Palestinian Arabic novel, both publishing in 1920. It addresses the Palestinian Nahda and the Russian educational enterprise as the formative context of these two authors and propose that Khalīl Baydas should be recognised as the architect of Palestinian literary realism.

Abstract:
AbstractAs stipulated by G. Stoops, “the aim of micropedology is to contribute to solving problems related to the genesis, classification and management of soils, including soil characterization in palaeopedology and archaeology. The interpretation of features observed in thin sections is the most important part of this type of research, based on an objective detailed analysis and description” (Stoops et al. 2018). To answer such questions, two major books contributed to the comparative knowledge necessary to tackle this objective: the first one was published in 1985 and used micromorphology to distinguish between different classes of soils (Douglas and Thompson 1985); the second one is an extensive guide of more than 1000 pages to the interpretation of micromorphological features encountered in thin sections of soil (Stoops et al. 2018). The aim of this Atlas is neither to be a substitution for these books nor a way to enter directly into the interpretation of soil genesis and classification. Nonetheless, this chapter presents the imprints of major soil processes that can be easily deduced from specific features observed in thin sections. These processes involve the dynamics of (a) clay, both translocation and swelling, (b) water, such as waterlogging, evaporation, and its role as ice and frost, (c) carbonate, gypsum, and iron oxyhydroxides, and finally (d) biogeochemical reactions within the solum.

Abstract:
During the thirties, in Argentina both the state in frastructure and architectural works adopted a char acter tending to the progress and social development as certain s ocial problems turned public and government agenda in an attempt to alleviate unemployment and legitimize th e political action. Especially within the public wo rks, the high schools built by the State were landmarks that indi cated in the cities two ways of intervention: the e ffective occupation of the territory and the modernization. This article of limited scope seeks to focus on the question of the location of these urban artifacts in order to d emonstrate that the selection of the land and its f eatures answered to the idea that the building should becom e a benchmark with a majestic imprint in smaller ci ties or new urban areas in more established ones.

Abstract:
Optical four-wave mixing in nonlinear media can be employed to perform parallel matrix multiplication. In our approach, two of the input beams, each carrying a matrix information along the transverse dimensions, enter the medium and form an index grating. This grating contains information about the product of the matrix elements of these two matrices. The index grating is then read out by a reference beam. In the appropriate conditions, the diffracted beam consists of the integrated contribution from each part of the volume grating along the beam path and is proportional to the matrix product. In our experiments, transparencies were used to imprint the 5 × 5 matrix information onto the light beams. A photorefractive BaTiO3 crystal is placed at the common image plane of these transparencies. The multiplication of matrices or vectors was carried out via the degenerate four-wave mixing process inside the photorefractive crystal. This paper describes the new method and reports the first experimental demonstration of an all-optical matrix–vector multiplication in a photorefractive BaTiO3 crystal. The same technique can also be utilized to perform optical interconnection and logic operations.

Abstract:
A novel 3-D optical memory device is presented which has the potential of storing extremely high (~1013-bits/cm3) bit densities. The information may be accessed randomly and in parallel by utilization of two beams which overlap inside the medium allowing volume optical information storage. The 3-D memory device is based on two-photon writing, reading, and erasing of information in a photochromic material embedded in a polymer matrix. An infrared beam and a visible beam combined induce a structural change on the photochromic material which corresponds to the write cycle. Subsequent to that, the initially transparent molecule absorbs in the visible and can be read by a combination of two near-infrared beams. The observed fluorescence, which is induced by the two-photon absorption of the infrared beams, constitutes the read signal. Erasing of the imprinted information can be achieved by warming the molecule with two infrared beams on which the molecule reverts to the original unwritten structural form. The written information persists for many days at dry ice temperatures (−78°C).

Title: Spatial Structure in Chinese and Japanese Cities: A Comparative Study of the Supergrid and Superblock StructureAuthor Name: Xiao Fei Chen Affiliation: Faculty of Architecture Design and Planning, The University of Sydney Address: The Wilkinson Bldg G04, 148 City Rd, Darlington NSW 2008 Email Address: xche3951@Sydney.edu.au Mobile: 61 (02) 0450875226 Keywords: Supergrid and Superblock, Urban Morphology, China and JapanAbstract:Supergrids and Superblocks form an urban structure that extends across large areas of many Chinese and Japanese cities. The grid structures consist of wide roads at a city scale and define Superblocks, each with a network of narrower streets. My paper investigates the form-function interrelationships of these structures from morphological perspectives against a backcloth of theory that stresses an integrated network of streets as the prerequisite for a convenient and synergetic environment, with a specific focus on road/street networks, and mix and distribution of functional activities. Both qualitative and quantitative methods (including space syntax) are used to investigate four Superblocks from two pairs of Chinese and Japanese cities: Xi’an and Kyoto, and Nanjing and Osaka, from three aspects: integration, connection and interaction. Here I focus on the Nanjing-Osaka pair and the findings demonstrate clear but divergent patterns between the two cities, which are indicative of general differences between Chinese and Japanese Superblocks: there are very strong interrelationships between the street network and distribution of activities in the Japanese Superblocks, but these are much less evident in the Chinese Superblocks and this results largely from the extensive Chinese cultural practice of building walls around compounds. It reveals some structural disadvantages, leading to congestion of traffic and functional activities in some strategic locations in Chinese Superblocks. It also highlights some crucial qualities in the structures of many Japanese Superblocks that can provide inspiration for China’s future urban development and possibly for cities in other parts of the world.Reference:Alexander, C. Abstract:
ABSTRACT Brazilian pre-salt carbonate reservoirs are known by their complex and varied pore shapes with multimodal pore-size distribution. The complexity in these lacustrine carbonates can be related to sensitiveness of salinity, pH, water level changes, topography, and sediment supply variations, forming deposits that can be very challenging for petrophysical characterization. This paper presents a geological-petrophysical experimental program based on thin sections, x-ray powder diffraction, gas permeameter-porosimeter, mercury intrusion porosimetry, well logs, nuclear magnetic resonance, and digital rock analyses on samples recovered from a well in a reservoir at Santos Basin, aiming to capture the multi-scale petrophysical properties associated with these rocks. The samples contained calcite (∼82 %), ankerite (∼12 %), and both quartz and clay minerals (∼3 %) composing only one facies that has calcite shrubs and spherulites as the main textural components. The average porosity (13.3 %), obtained in gas permeameter-porosimeter was similar to the one obtained from thin sections, well logs, nuclear magnetic resonance, and digital rock analyses. The carbonates’ heterogeneity was manifested in the permeability values (9.7 to 137.9 mD), which agrees with the diversity of pore types and the multi-modal pore size distributions obtained. The results of digital rock analysis enabled an internal view of the rock complementing the laboratory data and supporting its heterogeneous nature. In conclusion, the designed experimental program provides a rich collection of geological-petrophysical data towards a better understanding of the rock. INTRODUCTION Approximately 50-60 % of the world's hydrocarbons reserves and the largest oil and gas fields are composed of carbonate rocks (Roehl & Choquette, 1985; Ramakrishnan et al., 2001; Bust et al., 2011; Burchette, 2012; Garland et al., 2012). Initially, there was a common perception that carbonate reservoirs were mostly associated with a marine, especially organic, origin and were characterized by superficially similar mineralogical and diagenetic imprints (‘limestones and dolomites’), as addressed by Burchette (2012). Since the 1970s, however, the joint efforts between industry and academia provided major advances in the understanding of carbonate rocks. Some of the research-driver issues related to carbonate reservoirs include their complex and varied pore shapes with multimodal pore-size distribution, permeability ranges within orders of magnitude for a given porosity, and non-linear porosity/permeability relationships. Besides that, properties like porosity are very helpful to estimate mechanical parameters, through the use of empirical correlations, when there is no available sample for laboratory tests. Thus, operators working in Brazil are very much motivated to increase their knowledge about the petrophysics of pre-salt carbonates, which is the focus of this paper.

Abstract:
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) is a framework for collective action in the marine environmental policy established by Directive 2008/56/EC of the European Parliament and the Council on 17 June 2008. It calls for EU Member States to create national marine strategies to achieve good environmental status (GES) by 2020 or to maintain it in areas where it already exists. Five factors are laid out in Commission Decision (EU) 2017/848 for GES assessment in regard to a number of broad habitat types, as two of them were assessed in the article. Criterion D6C1 represents the spatial extent and distribution of physical loss of the natural seabed. Criterion D6C4 estimates the extent of loss of the habitat types resulting from anthropogenic pressures that should not exceed a specified proportion of the natural extent of the habitat types in the assessment areas. These criteria were evaluated for five coastal Marine Reporting Units (MRU) distributed in the Bulgarian sector of the Black Sea. The objective of the study is to evaluate the physical loss of the natural seabed and broad benthic habitat type as a result of coastal infrastructure development in each of the coastal MRUs and for the national Black Sea biogeographic region. The cumulative loss from the 1970s to 2017 was calculated. The period between 1970 and 1983 was chosen as a reliable historical baseline for which 1:5000-scale topographic maps are available. In addition, the study provides estimates of the natural seabed and habitat loss for the long-term period 1970/83 to 2017 and the 6- year assessment period under MSFD 2012 to 2017. GIS procedures include a compilation of vector files of shoreline and MRUs for the assessment periods 1970/83, 2012, and 2017, from which changes were evaluated Criterion D6C1: Spatial extent and distribution of physical loss of the natural seabed. Finally, spatial intersect analysis between seabed loss and broad benthic habitat types allowed assessment of Criterion D6C4: The extent of loss of the habitat type resulting from anthropogenic pressures. The work identified 302 designated hydrotechnical facilities, 33 of which were constructed during the most recent assessment period (2012-2017), which have left a significant negative imprint on the Bulgarian coast. Prominent accumulation of artificial structures was registered along Burgas, Varna, Balchik, and Nessebar. After the 1970s, due to the construction of coastal hydro-technical facilities and port infrastructure, the Bulgarian Black Sea shoreline increased by more than 11%, from 461.9 km (1970/83-2012) to 511.2 km (2012) and to 513.6 km (2017). The MRUs Cape Emine - Cape Maslen and Cape Kaliakra - Cape Galata are the most affected coastal areas by seafloor sealing and land reclamation. Infralittoral sand in Cape Emine - Cape Maslen Nos MRU represents the habitat with the highest absolute loss of 1.43 km2 and of 1.19% as a proportion of the total habitat area. The Infralittoral rock was assessed to have lost the most significant proportion of a broad benthic habitat type along the Varna shoreline - 3.39% (absolute area 0.35 km2), which is getting close to the critical threshold of 5% in the Cape Kaliakra-Cape Galata MRU. GISaided analysis showed that the most impacted broad benthic habitat types at the national scale are the Infralittoral sand and Infralittoral rock, with losses of 1.48 km2 and 0.528 km2, respectively. However, neither of the habitats exceeded the 5% threshold of habitat loss in any of the assessment areas. Finally, this article presented a pilot assessment of geomorphological seabedforms loss. Along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, a distinguished loss was observed on the shallow-water accumulative slope or beach face corresponding to the Infralittoral sand (1.476 km2), Infralittoral mud (0.003 km2), infralittoral mixed sediment (0.02 km2) and infralittoral coarse sediment (0.09 km2). Respectively, the largest loss of abrasion-structural seabed or bench was observed in the Infralittoral rock (0.533 km2).
