Heyam, Kit. The Reputation of Edward II, 1305-1697. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463729338.

Full text
Abstract:
During his lifetime and the four centuries following his death, King Edward II (1307-1327) acquired a reputation for having engaged in sexual and romantic relationships with his male favourites, and having been murdered by penetration with a red-hot spit. This book provides the first account of how this reputation developed, providing new insights into the processes and priorities that shaped narratives of sexual transgression in medieval and early modern England. In doing so, it analyses the changing vocabulary of sexual transgression in English, Latin and French; the conditions that created space for sympathetic depictions of same-sex love; and the use of medieval history in early modern political polemic. It also focuses, in particular, on the cultural impact of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II (c.1591-92). Through such close readings of poetry and drama, alongside chronicle accounts and political pamphlets, it demonstrates that Edward’s medieval and early modern afterlife was significantly shaped by the influence of literary texts and techniques. A ‘literary transformation’ of historiographical methodology is, it argues, an apposite response to the factors that shaped medieval and early modern narratives of the past.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the relationship between Russian gay men and both Western and Russian popular musics by focusing on specific harmonic and melodic musical attributes that contribute to a Russian “sound.” In particular, it considers the link between sound and listener to experiences of (pleasurable) penetration. It shows that Russian homosexuality imparts a certain prestige (marked by modernity, style, and internationality) upon a cultural product. It also reveals that Russian gay men professed a preference for Western popular music and Western music in general, even as many of them also admitted a connection to Russian popular musics. Finally, it examines the connections between music, penetrations, and the homosexual body in the context of politics. The chapter suggests that lived experience—apprehended, in part, as a porosity of borders and operating as both a material and conceptual dynamic—inflects the interaction between Russian gay men and audible culture.

Full text
Abstract:
Jane Austen: A Very Short Introduction combines critical introductions to each of Jane Austen’s major novels with an exploration of the themes of Austen’s writing. Austen wrote six of the best-loved novels in the English language, as well as a smaller corpus of works unpublished in her day. She pioneered new techniques for representing voices, minds, and hearts in narrative prose, and was a penetrating satirist of social tensions and trends. This VSI considers how Austen reveals the literary, social, and political tensions from which the novels emerge. It also analyses how her writing continues to charm and impact readers to the present day.

Reade, Michael C., and Peter D. Thomas. Pathophysiology of ballistic trauma. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199600830.003.0339.

Full text
Abstract:
Bullets and other projectiles cause ballistic trauma. Explosions wound by the effect of a blast pressure wave, penetrating fragments propelled by the explosion, the mass movement of gas interacting with the casualty or the environment, and miscellaneous effects. Most blast casualties surviving to hospital care will not have significant pressure wave injury, but some will. Blast fragmentation most commonly resembles other types of low energy transfer ballistic trauma.. The effect of bullets depends on the kinetic energy transferred and the nature of the tissues struck, with energy transfer partly determined by bullet design. Low energy transfer bullets wound by crushing and laceration, limited to the tissues struck. High energy bullets may impart kinetic energy to surrounding tissues, causing a temporary cavity which sucks in debris and damages tissues sometimes well beyond the bullet track. Predicting the extent of devitalization can be difficult at the time of initial inspection. Wound contamination, particularly with soil, may modify the usual conservative approach to initial debridement.

Abstract:
Fifteen leading philosophers explore a set of themes from the pioneering work of Gail Fine and Terence Irwin, in ancient philosophy but also in later periods and in systematic philosophy. The contributors discuss knowledge, rhetoric, freedom and practical reason, virtue and the good life, ethics and politics in Plato and Aristotle and beyond. The editors offer an introduction charting the scholarly contributions of Fine and Irwin and assessing their individual and joint impact, together with a complete bibliography of their writings. This volume is a token of our immense gratitude to Gail Fine and Terry Irwin for the benefit we have derived from their penetrating scholarly work. Through their writing, their teaching, their mentoring, and their broader scholarly output, Gail Fine and Terry Irwin have reshaped the character of Ancient Philosophy as an academic discipline. Their contributions to the discipline do not, however, end there. On the contrary, their wide-ranging achievements extend into all periods of the history of philosophy and indeed into several areas more systematic than historical.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work takes as its object of investigation the first Brazilian organizations linked to Trotskyism, in the period between 1928 and 1936. The Brazilian Trotskyist movement originated from certain historical conditions, from a rupture caused by national, particular factors, but which were directly related to divergences that shook the Russian Revolution and the international communist movement. The Lenine Communist Group (GCL), founded in May of 1930, was the first Brazilian organization to establish contact with the International Left Opposition. The group had a short life, but gave rise to another organization with the same Trotskyist ties. In January 1931, the Communist League (LC) emerged, which in 1933 adopted the name of the Communist Internationalist League (LCI) and operated until the end of 1936. As for methodological procedures, this research sought to dialogue with historiography, but to advance in the investigation a wide search was carried out in all available documentation. From the consultation and analysis of primary sources, we sought to reconstruct the discourse and political positioning of Trotskyist organizations. Despite the fact that the groups and parties that claimed Trotskyism were in general minority, made up of a few dozen militants and sympathizers, it is necessary, even today, due to their impact on militant culture, the depth and penetration of their criticism and theoretical formulation, investigate and discuss the performance of these organizations. In short, it is a question of recovering a debate that is still very current and necessary

Singer, Peter W., and Allan Friedman. Cybersecurity and Cyberwar. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/wentk/9780199918096.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Dependence on computers has had a transformative effect on human society. Cybernetics is now woven into the core functions of virtually every basic institution, including our oldest ones. War is one such institution, and the digital revolution’s impact on it has been profound. The American military, which has no peer, is almost completely reliant on high-tech computer systems. Given the Internet’s potential for full-spectrum surveillance and information disruption, the marshaling of computer networks represents the next stage of cyberwar. Indeed, it is upon us already. The recent Stuxnet episode, in which Israel fed a malignant computer virus into Iran’s nuclear facilities, is one such example. Penetration into US government computer systems by Chinese hackers-presumably sponsored by the Chinese government-is another. Together, they point to a new era in the evolution of human conflict. In Cybersecurity: What Everyone Needs to Know, noted experts Peter W. Singer and Allan Friedman lay out how the revolution in military cybernetics occurred and explain where it is headed. They begin with an explanation of what cyberspace is before moving on to discussions of how it can be exploited and why it is so hard to defend. Throughout, they discuss the latest developments in military and security technology. Singer and Friedman close with a discussion of how people and governments can protect themselves. In sum, Cybersecurity is the definitive account on the subject for the educated layman who wants to know more about the nature of war, conflict, and security in the twenty first century.

Bradford, Anu. The Brussels Effect. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190088583.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Brussels Effect challenges the prevalent view that the European Union (EU) is a declining world power. It argues that notwithstanding its many obvious challenges, the EU remains an influential superpower that shapes the world in its image through a phenomenon called the “Brussels Effect.” The Brussels Effect refers to the EU’s unilateral power to regulate global markets. Without the need to resort to international institutions or seek other nations’ cooperation, the EU has the unique ability among nations today to promulgate regulations that shape the global business environment, elevating standards worldwide and leading to a notable Europeanization of many important aspects of global commerce. Different from many other forms of global influence, the Brussels Effect entails that the EU does not need to impose its standards coercively on anyone—market forces alone are often sufficient to convert the EU standard into the global standard as multinational companies voluntarily extend the EU rule to govern their global operations. In this way, the EU wields significant, unique, and highly penetrating power to unilaterally transform global markets, including through its ability to set the standards in diverse areas such as competition regulation, data protection, online hate speech, consumer health and safety, or environmental protection.
