Full textThis thesis aims to investigate the EU immigration and asylum policies by reviewing official policy documents. The method used is a discourse analysis which seeks to uncover different underlying patterns or discourses that might effect the policies. Apart from the discourse analytic perspective there are two theoretical views applicated. These two perspectives are a universalistic and a postcolonialistic. The universalistic perspective is used in order to examine how the EU treats human rights in their immigration and asylum policies. The postcolonialistic perspective is used with the purpose to see if there might be an expression for a kind of colonialism of compassion. According to the result this “new” kind of colonialism can be said to make part of the policies. As for the universalistic perspective it is shown that there is an explicit ambition to respect human rights but the political ideas seem to be more particularistic then universalistic. Another conclusion is that the EU seems to view immigration through a very negative perspective which this thesis claims has an effect on how the policies are written. When the EU insist to speak about “illegal immigration” instead of just “irregular immigration” this shows how they aim to strenghten the dimension of immigration and asylum as a problem.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research study discusses the extent to which transnational organised crime (TOC) has had an impact on Norwegian immigration policy. There has been a public debate in Norway about the involvement of asylum seekers in various forms of organised crime, leading immigration authorities to lament their insufficient resources and means to tackle the problem. Simultaneously, restrictive amendments have been made to the Norwegian Immigration Act, suggesting that immigration law is applied against TOC. The aim of the study is to understand why there has been a change in Norwegian immigration policy, and to discuss the effects and implications of the change. The study is a single-case study using qualitative methods, as the study seeks to provide a detailed description of Norwegian immigration policy and the context in which the changes in the immigration policy have been made. The case of Norway has been chosen because of the increasing focus that TOC has been receiving from Norwegian immigration authorities, accompanied by broad media coverage and restrictive amendments to the Immigration Act. The theories that are applied – criminologies of the self and the other, crimmigration, and securitisation theory – are all chosen because they address different aspects of “us” and “them” thinking. The study argues that the increased focus on transnational organised crime in Norwegian crime statistics reflects the narrative of the criminal other, found in criminologies of the self and the other. Within this narrative the criminal others are distinctly different from ordinary citizens of society and must be excluded for our own security and protection. This contributes to reinforcement of a discourse in which asylum seekers and illegal immigrants become difficult to distinguish from suspicious others and criminals. Accordingly, there is support for the claim that Norwegian immigration policy has been subject to a process of crimmigration. Further, it is found that Norwegian immigration policy has been securitised. It is concluded that although there might be a connection between transnational organised crime and a shift in immigration policy, the change in immigration policy is rather a result of the larger issue of immigration in general. The theoretical framework shows how immigration becomes framed within a security and criminal context, leading to a narrative where the other becomes a potential threat to members of society. This is problematic in a world where inequality is on the rise, and international conventions on human rights are at odds with punitive populism.

Full textThe study argues that implicit in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the principle of immigration as human rights is supported by principle of positive freedom, negative freedom, and equal autonomy. The study endorses a liberal egalitarian perspective by claiming that human right to immigrate promotes equal autonomy. The study also investigates why the principle of immigration as a human right has been dismissed by doctrines within Liberalism. It argues that a state lacks a legitimacy to employ a principle of national self-determination against the immigration issue. Instead, a state has a moral obligation to the protection of a human right to immigrate; it also has a duty to provide equal social rights to the immigrants in compared with those of the citizens.
Shali, Fatin. "Illegal immigration till staden Rom." Thesis, Södertörn University College, School of Life Sciences, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-1100.

Full textThis dissertation addresses the problem of racial stratification of the Latino community in the United States from the theoretical position of critical race theory. Racial stratification for Latino residents and Latino immigrants is possible in the everyday through a series of practices that allow for persons of the community to contribute to the proliferation of race in American society by rendering race very difficult to address politically. The theoretical analysis of friendship as a form of moral aesthetics in the works of Aristotle, Kant, and Rousseau allows for a theory of race that addresses the invisibility and the transcendence of race constitutive of American society and, therefore, constitutive of the racial stratification of the Latino community in the United States. In this theoretical development, race is thought as an aesthetic of both the citizen and the immigrant subjects or, in other words, as a race-aesthetics. McKnight's (2010) theory of the conditionality of race, Hall's (New Ethnicities 1996, Race, Articulation, and Societies Structured in Dominance 1996) theories of cultural representation and hegemonic domination, Gilroy's (1995) theory of Black Atlantic counterculture, and Mills' (1997) theory of the hegemony of the racial contract are critically engaged and expanded with the theory of the race-aesthetic.

Full textThe fall of the communist regime in Albania has lead to the influx of minority immigrants of Greek origin into Greece, transforming it from a country of origin to a recipient country of immigrants. This influx, often confused with the repatriation of emigrants, is marked by the xenophobic dimension of having to live with the “foreigners-expatriates”. The members of the minority, as a special category in the Albanian population but also as an immigrant group in the Greek community, were gradually lead to the (re)formation of their identity, according to the demands and standards of local recipient communities. Therefore, through the cultural osmosis among local and immigrant communities, in the official –state– as well as the unofficial levels, their identity has been (re)defined after the immigrational experience, and as a generative force of group goals and individual choices is (re)produced ethnically through innovative codes, corresponding to their contemporary field of reference

Full textOur study of Immigrated African women opens up the way to a new reading of the female character in novels and short stories by three women writers : Calixte Belaya, Leila Sebbar and Michèle Rotoson. This controversial subject of the African woman character arouses many crucial debates. African women have often been accused of having remained behind, compared to other women throughout the world. They need changes as much in their perception of things as in their implication in the development of their country. Education is one of the best way for them to acquire skills and essential qualities of a dynamic growth phase. It is thus necessary to return in the world of knowledge to think about her professional commitment and to arm herself of necessary tools as well for her personal fulfilment as for her own country. Obviously it is this context that a few women are devoted themselves to writing and to try to fight for coming out this dulling which freezes them up and prevent them from evolving in the modern society. So as part of this study for the end of my studies, I will analyse the career and practical experiences of African Women in Immigration. This work is based on novels and short stories written by women who inspired themselves from their daily lives to convey their helplessness which is often part of a migrant population. At the time when these novels were written, it was mainly men who motivated by the idea of a better job, migrated to France bringing along their wives and their children with them. It is anymore the case today. In our study we are going to follow the experiences of a few heroines of novels by revealing their successes and their failures. At the same time we are going to bring out the positive and negative influences of their social backgrounds, the striking and indelible facts which constitute the factors of personal and professional changes

Full textThe purpose of the thesis is to evaluate economic theory of immigration and economic growth. We use Borjas theory (1995) about the economic benefits from immigration as a point of departure. Borjas theory says that the costs of immigration must be compared to the economic benefits of immigration. If the benefits of immigration are great enough, immigration can be compared to an investment with a high rate of return. To maximize the gains of immigration the immigrating population should complement the factors of production of the receiving country. To examine the relationship between immigration and growth econometric models using panel data for the EU25 countries over the time period 2004–2015 have been estimated. To test if our results are robust we use three different measurements of immigration: quantity of immigrants, refugee population and number of new citizens. The results show a significant positive relationship between immigration and growth, supporting Borjas hypothesis of benefits of immigration. The thesis further discusses if the economic growth actually is a product of the lowering of wages or if endogenous technological change as a result of an increase in human capital is the answer. Immigration as an answer to Europe’s demographic changes is also discussed. The conclusion of the thesis is that there is a positive relation between immigration and growth, which aligns with the economic theory, but that it is difficult to comment on the underlying mechanisms of the relationship. Conclusively a joint immigration policy for the EU is recommended for the purpose of fully capturing the economic benefits of immigration.
