A União Europeia depara-se com a falta de trabalhadores qualificados devido
ao crescimento da idade média da sua população. Durante as últimas
décadas, enquanto a América do Norte atraía muitos trabalhadores
qualificados, a Europa era também um destino de imigração, mas devido à
falta de uma política coerente de imigração muitos eram imigrantes ilegais que
por sua vez não eram trabalhadores altamente qualificados.
Tem havido muita pesquisa sobre a imigração na Europa e em Portugal, mas
nenhuma focou o assunto da re-emigração de trabalhadores estrangeiros
qualificados para fora de Portugal.
O estudo que aqui se apresenta foca-se nos investigadores / académicos que
vieram para Portugal por um período de tempo, e visa identificar os factores
que levaram estes académicos a estabelecerem-se em Portugal ou a ir para
um terceiro país. À medida que estes académicos vêm para Portugal para
fazer as suas pesquisas para o seu Doutoramento e Pós-doutoramento eles
são considerados trabalhadores qualificados, que podem ser um recurso útil
para o mercado Português após terem terminado os seus estudos.
Para executar esta pesquisa foi usado um questionário na web que foi aplicado
a 46 académicos iranianos e indianos e foram feitas entrevistas aleatórias. O
questionário possui uma grande variedade de questões que podem ser úteis
para outros estudos similares. Através dos resultados deste estudo, foram
revelados os principais factores que contribuíram para a tomada de decisão
dos investigadores (estabelecerem-se em Portugal ou ir para um terceiro país).
Estes factores ajudam na construção de um sistema de avaliação no que
respeita à aceitação de imigrantes qualificados baseado naqueles que têm
mais probabilidades de integração.
ABSTRACT: The European Union is confronted to the lack of skilled workers due to the
increasing of the average age of its population. During recent decades, while
North America was attracting many skilled workers, Europe was also a
destination for immigrants, but due to the lack of a consistent immigration
policy, many of these were illegal immigrants and thus were not highly
educated workers.
Much research has been conducted about immigration in Europe and Portugal,
but none has focused on the subject of re-emigration of non- Portuguese skilled
workers out of Portugal. This study focuses on Iranian and Indian academics
who have come to Portugal for a period of time, and attempts to identify the
factors which impact on the decision of these academics to settle in Portugal or
to re-emigrate to a third country. As these academics came to Portugal to do
their PhD and post-doctoral research, they are considered skilled workers who
can be a useful resource for the Portuguese market after finishing their studies.
To carry out this research, a web-based questionnaire was used to investigate
46 Iranian and Indian academics and random interviews were conducted. The
questionnaire covers a broad range of questions which can be useful for similar
studies.
From the results of this study the main factors contributing to the decision
making of academics (to settle in Portugal or to re-emigrate to a third country)
was revealed. These factors may help in the design of an evaluation system for
accepting skilled immigrants in Portugal based on those who have more
probability of integration.

Portugal has experienced various structural changes in recent history which have greatly contributed to the country having a sizeable and varied immigrant population at present. The Global Economic Crisis of 2008 has severely impacted numerous countries in the European Union including Portugal. Conditions in Portugal had been gradually worsening, largely as a result of a stagnating national economy, where unemployment steadily increased in the years leading up to 2008. In the wake of the crisis, Portugal has experienced dramatic reductions in GDP, soaring unemployment rates and in particular regarding youth unemployment, social unrest and political instability. Further, the most vulnerable socioeconomic groups in Portugal have been worst affected, where social inequality, poverty and a whole array of other social issues have been exacerbated by the crisis and the austerity policies that were implemented in the wake of the economic crash. This thesis attempted to discover if attitudes towards immigrants have changed in light of worsening economic conditions in Portugal during three different time periods 2002-2006-2012, with a primary focus on the most recent period where conditions were most austere. Moreover, this research also sought to establish the determinants which influence attitudes towards immigrants over the same time period. Data was used from three rounds of the European Social Survey and in particular, round 1 (2002/2003), round 3 (2006/2007) and round 6 (2012/2013). Descriptive statistics and ordered logistic regressions were used in order to answer the research questions and realistic group conflict theory was utilised as a theoretical framework when analysing and explaining the findings. It was evident that attitudes towards immigrants have become more negative over the given time period and were indeed most pronounced in light of the recent economic crisis. It was also apparent that natives who were in greater competition with immigrants possessed the most pronounced levels of prejudice.

This research project aims to argue that the notions of ethnic identity, ethnic group and ethnicity should be thought of as socially constructed. In order to strengthen the above assumption, fieldwork was undertaken by examining African Mozambicans' narratives of immigration and identity, and acculturation strategies in Portugal and in England. The reading of the data suggests that individuals' perceptions of their identity and of the social world change over time, and in accordance with the social structures in which their lives are imbued. In addition, it is certain that social actors use discourse as a narrative form to justify and legitimise their identity options, and acculturative strategies. Taking into consideration the analysis of fieldwork material, it is possible to conclude, on the one hand, that the notions of ethnic identity, ethnic group and ethnicity are socially constructed, on the other hand, that the term ethnicity should be addressed as a detached human experience from the terms of ethnic identity and ethnic group.

Os museus da migração consideram estas questões nos seus espaços de exposição. O projeto também considera estes fatores e propõe uma serie de princípios museológicos e de postulados museográficos para estabelecer uma instituição que contribui a valorizar e a difundir sua significação. O tema selecionado - o trabalho dos imigrantes portugueses - facilita a leitura transversal do discurso histórico das exposições previstas porque toma conta da representação cultural que a sociedade venezuelana tem feito da obra e dos trabalhadores imigrantes.

Mestrado em Ciências Empresariais<br>O objetivo principal do presente estudo é o de investigar e analisar as motivações e obstáculos de empreendedores chineses motivados por oportunidades em Portugal. Esses chineses que criam um novo empreendimento em Portugal sob oportunidade empresarial devem distinguir-se dos empreendedores chineses de necessidade ou sobrevivência. O grupo demográfico principal neste estudo é o de empreendedores imigrantes Chineses motivados por oportunidades que chegaram a Portugal após o ano de 2012. A partir desta data, existiu uma grande mudança da estrutura demográfica dos empreendedores chineses imigrantes que entraram em Portugal, devido à publicação de Autorização de Residência para Atividade de Investimento (ARI) que atraiu não só investidores chineses mas também os empreendedores chineses que reconheceram oportunidades comerciais em Portugal. É proposto um enquadramento, que se divide em duas dimensões (fatores exteriores e fatores individuais), para demonstrar as motivações e os obstáculos suscitados com a criação de uma empresa em Portugal. Por causa de ausência de estudos académicos relacionados com o empreendedor imigrante chinês em Portugal, decidiu-se utilizar a metodologia de análise qualitativa. Selecionámos cinco casos representativos dos empreendedores chineses para desenvolver a análise, implementando entrevistas em profundidade com respostas a um conjunto de questões aos empreendedores.<br>This study's primary objective is to investigate and analyse the motivation and barriers of Chinese opportunity-driven entrepreneurs in Portugal. The Chinese who create new ventures in Portugal with a particular business opportunity should be distinguished from those Chinese who are entrepreneurs for survival. The main demographic group in this study is Chinese opportunity-driven entrepreneurs who arrived in Portugal after 2012. For after this date the demographic structure of Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs changed immensely in Portugal with the divulgation of Residential Authorisation for Investment Activity (ARI), which attracted not only Chinese investors, but also Chinese entrepreneurs who recognised potential business opportunities in Portugal. We advocate a framework of Chinese opportunity-driven immigrant entrepreneurs which demonstrates the motivation and barriers of their new venture in Portugal. As there is a lack of academic studies about Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs in Portugal, we decided to use a qualitative analysis which was divided into two dimensions, namely environmental factors and individual factors. In a context characterised by the shift from fordism to post-fordism in the Iberian peninsula, this thesis addresses the following question how are capital, governments and social movements organised in the processes of integration and resistance that affect foreign immigration' in Barcelona and Lisbon? Thus, in the first chapter, an analysis of the concept of "integration" is undertaken in order to understand the complexities and elusiveness that hide behind it, giving special attention to immigrants' integration literature. A distinction between systemic integration and social integration is adopted, and thus in the second chapter recent theorisation on capital and the state (i. e. systemic institutions) is approached, while in the third chapter social movements and organisations are taken into account. In chapter four epistemological and methodological elements are noted. The last three chapters are devoted to analyse original fieldwork data (mainly qualitative interviews): chapter 6 analyses immigration governmental policies at European, 'national-state', 'national-regional', and local levels; chapter 7 studies social and capital organisations in Barcelona in relation to 'foreign immigration'; and in chapter 8 social and capital organisations are studied in relation to 'foreign immigration' in Lisbon. Finally, some conclusions are revealed whilst other questions are posed.

Mestrado em Gestão de Recursos Humanos<br>Este estudo procurou analisar a integração dos imigrantes brasileiros no mercado de trabalho em Portugal e até onde estes têm contacto com a Gestão de Recursos Humanos. Devido a crise económica, algumas empresas têm utilizado a flexibilidade de emprego para responder as mudanças tecnológicas e se manter no mercado. Essa situação, algumas vezes, traz uma certa precariedade laboral, que além de afetar os portugueses, também faz com que as condições de trabalho dos imigrantes venha a se agravar.
A estratégia de investigação empírica privilegiou o método do estudo de caso e baseou-se numa metodologia qualitativa, utilizando como técnica a entrevista semi-estruturada.
Com base nos resultados encontrados, podemos dizer que, os imigrantes brasileiros, que muitas vezes, começam por trabalhar em segmentos pouco qualificados e onde predominam situações de precariedade laboral, de alguma forma sempre tiveram contacto com a gestão de RH e que muitos destes inquiridos, passaram por todas as etapas de uma GRH, nomeadamente entrevista, seleção, formação, avaliação de desempenho. Os resultados revelam também que, com o passar do tempo, com a experiência adquirida e com as formações que fizeram, conseguiram trabalhos melhores, sendo que, alguns deles hoje têm cargos de chefia ou até mesmo seu próprio negócio.<br>This study analised the integration of the Brasilian immigrants in the Portuguese work market and their relation with the Human Resources Management. Due to the economical crisis some companies have used the work flexibility as an answer to the technological changes and to keep up the competitivity.
Sometimes that situation creates the precariousness of work, which besides affecting the Portuguese also worsens the work conditions of the immigrants.
The strategy of the empirical investigation has privileged the case method study and was based in a qualitative methodology, using as technic the semi-structured interview.
Based on the results, the Brasilian immigrants, who often start working in low qualification jobs, where the insecurity is high, somehow have always been in contact with the Human Resources Management and most of the interviewed have been through all the stages of Human Resources Management, namely: interview, selection, training and performance assessment.
The results also reveal that, as time went by, with the training and the experience gained, they were able to find better jobs and some of them even got promoted to a leading position or started their own businesses.

Dissertação de Mestrado em Psicologia Comunitária apresentada ao ISPA - Instituto Universitário<br>O objectivo desta dissertação é descrever os processos de participação cívica de jovens imigrantes dos PALOP e a relação com o sentimento de comunidade local e sentimento de comunidade nacional.
Utilizámos uma abordagem multimétodo. Na componente quantitativa foi aplicada a Escala Breve de Sentimento de Comunidade (EBSC) (Peterson, Speer & McMillan, 2008) a uma amostra de 60 participantes. Relativamente à componente qualitativa, conduzimos um grupo de discussão focalizada e quatro entrevistas individuais. Os factores de inclusão de participantes no estudo foram: nascimento num país dos PALOP e ter entre 18 e 24 anos no momento de recolha de dados.
Os dados quantitativos foram analisados estatisticamente, tendo sido realizada análise factorial exploratória, cálculos de correlações entre variáveis e testes não-paramétricos para testar a existência de diferenças nos scores da EBSC ao nível das variáveis sociodemográficas. Os dados qualitativos foram analisados à luz da análise temática.
Os resultados indicam um sentimento de comunidade mediano, tanto a nível comunitário (M = 2.77) como a nível nacional, como se entende pela congregação dos dados quantitativos e qualitativos. Existem diferenças no sentimento de comunidade: participantes com nacionalidade Portuguesa e participantes que residem em Portugal há mais de dez anos apresentam scores mais elevados na EBSC. Os resultados indicam que o sentimento de comunidade mediano tem implicações na participação dos jovens, o que é convergente com a literatura.
Concluímos que os resultados da dissertação contribuem para a investigação nesta área, sobretudo por integrar a aferição do sentimento de comunidade local e nacional e descrever a sua relação com a participação cívica.<br>The main aim of this dissertation is to describe the civic youth engagement processes among immigrants from Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PSAC) and the relation between local sense of community and national sense of community.
It was used a multi-method approach. Regarding the quantitative component, it was applied the Brief Sense of Community Scale (BSCS) (Peterson, Speer & McMillan, 2008) to 60 a participants sample. Regarding the qualitative component, we conducted a focus group and four individual interviews. The participants’ inclusion criteria in the study were: being born in one of the (PSAC) and an age between 18 and 24 years at the moment of data collection.
The quantitative data were analyzed statistically, and we performed exploratory factorial analysis, calculated correlations among variables and non-parametric tests to probe for the existence of differences in BSSC’s scores at sociodemographic variables level. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis.
The results suggest a medium sense of community (M = 2.77), both at the national and the community level, as we were able to perceive by the congregation of quantitative and qualitative data. There are differences in sense of community: participants with Portuguese nationality and the participants that live in Portugal since more than ten years ago show higher scores in BSCS. The results suggest that the medium sense of community as practical implications in youth participation, and this is convergent with literature.
We conclude that the dissertation results contribute towards research in this area, mainly because the study integrates the sense of community measure at national and local level and describes its relation with civic participation.

Contexte: De récentes études ont explicitement démontré que les communautés d’immigrants doivent affronter des difficultés particulières afin d'accéder aux services de santé et font face à des disparités sanitaires significatives, subissant l'effet de déterminants sociaux sous-jacents de la santé (DSS). Les immigrants représentant un pourcentage grandissant de la population dans de nombreux pays développés, mieux comprendre et supprimer ces barrières est une des grandes priorités. En se fondant sur l'utilisation d'une structure DSS, cette thèse contribue aux recherches actuelles concernant l'accès aux services de santé parmi les populations d'immigrants bangladais dans trois villes internationales : Lisbonne (Portugal), Bruxelles (Belgique) et Boston (Massachusetts, U.S.A.). À cet effet, elle apporte des précisions sur les données qualitatives limitées disponibles concernant les communautés immigrantes bangladaises qui vivent sur les sites de recherche mentionnés ci-dessus.Résultats: Les résultats obtenus ont montré que les immigrants bangladais vivant sur ces trois sites de recherche possèdent une vision généralement holistique de la santé et du bien-être. Les pressions de l'acculturation et l'isolement social constituent deux des DSS pertinents ayant une influence sur la santé et l'accès aux services sanitaires. Parmi les principaux enjeux de santé et besoins en soins de cette communauté, les problèmes de santé mentale et l'isolement social, l'alimentation et les habitudes alimentaires, le manque d'activité physique, des niveaux élevés de diabète et de maladies cardiovasculaires ont été identifiés comme facteurs influençant. Certaines valeurs culturelles associées à des motivations d'ordre économique peuvent conditionner l'importance que les individus accordent à leur santé. A titre d'exemple, l'obligation envers la famille, profondément ancrée dans la culture bangladaise, se traduit souvent chez les immigrants travaillant à l'étranger par un sentiment de pression économique et se manifeste par un stress chronique et un déséquilibre entre vie professionnelle et vie personnelle. La communication et les barrières linguistiques apparaissent comme étant les principaux freins à l'engagement des immigrants bangladais avec les prestataires de soins. Enfin, le type ainsi que le contexte de l'immigration joue un rôle important dans l'utilisation des services de santé par les immigrants bangladais: le sentiment d’être dans une situation transitoire sur le lieu où ils se trouvent tel qu'à Lisbonne et Bruxelles, en opposition à une perspective d'établissement plus permanent tel qu'à Boston, semble influencer l'utilisation active de soins de santé continus.Conclusion: Les problèmes de santé de chaque individu, la situation de leur statut d'immigrant et les circonstances familiales ont joué un rôle sur la manière dont les membres de la communauté bangladaise ont accédé et utilisé les services de santé sur chaque site de recherche. Bien que les liens sociaux au sein des communautés bangladaises vivant à l'étranger soient forts, tous les individus ne se trouvaient pas nécessairement en contact avec les membres de leur communauté. Ceci met en exergue le besoin d'un engagement et d'une sensibilisation auprès des immigrants susceptibles de ne pas bénéficier de la protection du capital social de leur communauté. Cette dissertation a permis de dresser le profil des déterminants sociaux influençant l'accès aux services de santé de la communauté immigrante bangladaise, avec pour objectif d'informer les professionnels travaillant avec cette population. A cet effet, les conclusions de cette recherche seront partagées avec les participants et intervenants de chaque site d'études afin de renforcer la compréhension des communautés immigrantes bangladaises et accroître les ressources mises à leur disposition<br>Background: Recent studies clearly identify that immigrant communities experience specific challenges in accessing health care services, and face significant health disparities, that are impacted by underlying social determinants of health (SDH). As immigrants comprise an increasing percentage of the population in many developed nations, a better understanding and eliminating of these barriers is a major priority. Using an SDH framework, this dissertation contributes to the current research regarding access to health services among Bangladeshi immigrant populations in three international cities: Lisbon (Portugal), Brussels (Belgium), and Boston (MA-USA). In doing so, it expands upon the limited qualitative data available that concerns Bangladeshi immigrant communities living in these aforementioned research sites.Methods: This dissertation utilized a qualitative descriptive research design to comprehend issues from the perspective of both immigrant community members and service providers. The findings presented in this study, therefore, focus on data analyzed from 45 original in-depth interviews with Bangladeshi immigrant community members (n=32) and service providers (n=13) across Lisbon, Brussels, and Boston. Data was collected primarily using a semi-structured interview guide.Results: Bangladeshi immigrants living across the three research sites possess an overall holistic view of health and well-being according to results. Relevant SDH affecting health and accessing health services included pressures of acculturation and social isolation. The following were identified as some of the key community health issues and care needs: mental health and social isolation, food and dietary habits, lack of exercise, high levels of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Certain cultural values coupled with economic motivators may influence the way individuals prioritize their health. For example, the obligation towards family that is deeply embedded in Bangladeshi culture often translated to feelings of economic pressure by immigrants working abroad and manifested as chronic stress and a work-life imbalance. Communication and language barriers emerged as the most prominent issue of engagement between Bangladeshi immigrants and service providers. Finally, the type and context of immigration played in important role in health service utilization by Bangladeshi immigrants: a transitory outlook on their current location such as in Lisbon and Brussels, as opposed to a more permanent outlook in Boston, appeared to influence the active uptake of continuous health care.Conclusion: Individual health priorities, immigration status, and family circumstances affected how Bangladeshi community members accessed and utilized health services at each research site. Although social networks in Bangladeshi communities abroad were strong, not all individuals were necessarily connected with their fellow community members. This underlines the need to initiate engagement and outreach to immigrant individuals who may fall outside of the protection of social capital in their community. This dissertation has established a profile of social determinants impacting access to health services for Bangladeshi immigrant communities, with the purposes of informing professionals working within this population. As such, results will be shared with participants and stakeholders at each of the study sites in order to strengthen the understanding of and resources available to Bangladeshi immigrant communities

Dissertação de Mestrado em Política Social<br>A comunidade cabo-verdiana, considerada a mais antiga e a mais enraizada em Portugal, constituiu durante décadas a maior a residir no país, principalmente no final dos anos 60. A proximidade cultural, a facilidade no processo de legalização e integração, foram fatores determinantes para a escolha de Portugal como destino.
O objetivo deste trabalho é abordar a integração das cabo-verdianas no mercado de trabalho português. Consonante com esta problemática, o foco principal é analisar alguns campos que são fundamentais e que marcam a sua realidade, nomeadamente: as dificuldades de integração no mercado de trabalho; o grau de satisfação no trabalho e a sua remuneração; o tipo de trabalho que desempenham; as variáveis que facilitam a integração no mercado de trabalho; e os principais motivos que as levaram a emigrarem.
A metodologia a seguir passa pela pesquisa bibliográfica e análise documental, seguindo da realização de uma entrevista qualitativa, com base numa amostra de 17 mulheres residentes na área de Lisboa. A recolha dos dados foi feita no ano de 2012, na Associação de Solidariedade Imigrante, no Terreiro do Paço.
Os resultados mostram que as mulheres cabo-verdianas em Portugal enfrentam algumas dificuldades na integração no mercado de trabalho.<br>Cape Verdean community is considered the oldest and the most entrenched in Portugal. For decades, mainly in the last 60s, they were the largest community living in Portugal. Cultural proximity, facility in legalization process and integration, were the determining factors to choose Portugal as destination country.
The objective of this study is to approach the integration of Cape Verdean women in Portuguese labor market. Consonant with this problem, the main focus is to analyze some important fields that mark their reality, namely: the integration difficulties in labor market; the degree of the job satisfaction, and the remuneration; the type of work they perform; the variables which facilitate integration in the labor market, and the main reasons which made them to emigrate.
The methodology involves literature search, and documental analysis following a completion of a qualitative interview, based on a sample of seventeen women living in the Lisbon area. Data collection was made in 2012 in the Association of Immigrant Solidarity, located in Terreiro do Paço.
The results show that, in Portugal, Cape Verdean women face some difficulties to integrate in labor market.<br>N/A

the African black immigrants from the PALOP -Portuguese-speaking African
Countries - and their descendents is built in the Portuguese Newspapers Público,
Correio da Manhã e O Expresso, in 2003, 2004 and 2005, as well as the ethnic identity
of the Brazilian black men in the magazine Raça Brasil during the same period. It
also aims at realizing both the case of the black Brazilians in Brazil and the black
African immigrants from the PALOP living in Portugal which are the recurring
themes, the proximities, the distances and resemblances that can be found in the
Portuguese newspapers discourse and in the magazine Raça Brasil, although both
are inserted in historical, social, politics, economic and cultural distinct realities.
Defining this proposal , the investigation takes into account the theoretical
contributions of the Max Weber, Fredrik Barth, Stuart Hall and Michel Wieviorka,
as a means to capture the specifications of what is defined as an ethnic proper
identity. The methodological option is the qualitative-quantitative approach
through the content and discourse analysis by the use of the computer tool
Statistical Package for Social Sciences SPSS, including interviews made with
leaderships connected to the black African immigrants from the PALOP in
Portugal and the black Brazilians in Brazil, which made it possible to conjugate
different factor involved in the investigated reality. It also searches not to privilege
just the results per se, but to enlighten the reflection about the relationship between
the media, the ethnic identity and the private actions bonds and the context in which
they occur<br>Esta tese apresenta como principal proposta verificar como é construída não
só a identidade étnica dos imigrantes negros africanos dos PALOP e seus
descendentes nos jornais portugueses Público, Correio da Manhã e O Expresso, em
2003, 2004 e 2005, como também do negro brasileiro na revista Raça Brasil durante
o mesmo período. Busca-se também perceber, tanto no caso dos negros brasileiros
no Brasil como no dos imigrantes negros africanos dos PALOP em Portugal,
embora ambos estejam inseridos em realidades históricas, sociais, políticas,
econômicas e culturais diversas, quais as recorrências temáticas, as proximidades, as
distâncias e as semelhanças encontradas nos discursos dos jornais portugueses e da
revista Raça Brasil. Na definição desta proposta, a investigação conta sobretuto com
as contribuições teóricas de Max Weber, Fredrik Barth, Stuart Hall e Michel

de século pelo que, para os Estados poderem estar preparados, se toma imperativo
aprofundar a investigação científica nesta matéria. Só através de uma análise
multidisciplinar se pode identificar o que leva um individuo a migrar, qual o percurso do
migrante e quais as consequências da sua acção.
A história das migrações portuguesas do século XX sofre profundas alterações em
consequência do fim do império colonial, que origina o regresso de um significativo
contingente de portugueses ao país, da adesão de Portugal à Comunidade Económica
Europeia, decisivo para o desenvolvimento da economia, e da queda do regime soviético,
que originou um novo fluxo de migrantes em direcção a Portugal entre outros destinos, à
procura de melhores condições de vida.
Portugal deixou progressivamente de ser um país de emigração, entrando
definitivamente, nos anos 90, nas rotas das migrações internacionais, como país de
acolhimento. Neste sentido, pretendeu-se com este trabalho traçar o enquadramento
jurídico-legal do migrante, o perfil da actual imigração e avaliar o seu impacto no
desenvolvimento de Portugal.<br>The intemational migrations are undoubtedly one of the hugest challenges from the
beginning of this century for which countries, in order to be prepared, will have to
improve their scientifíc knowledge over the subject. Only through deep multidisciplinary
analysis it will be possible to identify, the reasons that make an individual migrate, his
pathway and the consequences of his action.
The Portuguese migration history changes radically during the 20,h century namely
because: of the ending of the Portuguese Colonial Empire, which originates a mass retum
to the homeland of a large Portuguese community, the accession to the European
Economic Community, vital for the Portuguese economic development; and the
implosion of the Soviet Union, that originated a new stream of migrants looking for
better life conditions.
Portugal moved progressively from an emigrant's country to became, during the 90's, a
reference base in the intemational migrations route as a welcome country. Thus this
paper tries to draw the legal framework of the migrant, the characteristics of the
immigration in our days and to evaluate its impact in the development of Portugal.

L'engagement des parents dans le cheminement scolaire des enfants est souvent bénéfique à la réussite de ceux-ci. Les études démontrent que les parents immigrants ont de la difficulté à s'engager auprès de l'école de la société d'accueil. La présente recherche de maîtrise avait pour but de mettre en lumière les perceptions des parents portugais quant à leur engagement dans le cheminement scolaire de leurs enfants. Pour le cadre de référence, nous avons décidé de nous baser sur la typologie des pratiques parentales selon Epstein (1992). On a choisi cette typologie afm de répertorier et classer les pratiques parentales de nos participants. Les résultats ont permis de voir que les parents de notre étude mettent en place plusieurs pratiques d'engagement et sont très engagés dans le parcours scolaire de leurs enfants. Ces résultats soulèvent quelques contradictions avec les quelques études qui portaient déjà sur les parents portugais et l' éducation.

Mestrado em Desenvolvimento e Cooperação Internacional<br>Este estudo partiu da premissa de que existe uma relação estreita entre o sector do trabalho doméstico, sector que apresenta um conjunto de especificidades que o remetem para uma posição menos valorizada socialmente, e a imigração, com uma fracção crescente dessas actividades a serem desempenhadas por mulheres imigrantes. Esta relação insere-se num contexto de divisão internacional do trabalho e é influenciada por um conjunto de factores estruturais, nos países de destino, que têm vindo a contribuir para a definição do enquadramento profissional das trabalhadoras domésticas imigrantes. Adicionalmente, o aumento da procura de trabalhadoras domésticas imigrantes está enquadrado num contexto de desigualdade de género, classe e etnia -"tripla discriminação" - determinando a segregação ocupacional da mulher imigrante e dificultando a sua mobilidade profissional. À semelhança do que acontece em outros países europeus, em Portugal tem-se assistido a uma progressiva substituição de mulheres autóctones por mulheres ligadas às sucessivas "vagas" de imigração no sector do trabalho doméstico. Adicionalmente, visando despender o mínimo de recursos financeiros possível, muitos empregadores revogam os seus deveres enquanto entidade empregadora, e encontram nas trabalhadoras domésticas imigrantes, pela sua própria condição, um maior potencial de aceitação destas condições. A natureza do serviço doméstico coloca as trabalhadoras domésticas em geral numa posição vulnerável. Contudo, essa vulnerabilidade é agravada no caso das trabalhadoras imigrantes, pela sua própria condição. Assim sendo, as práticas de exploração laboral podem assumir diversas formas, variando, em muitos casos, com o estatuto da imigração. Entre os principais problemas que afectam as trabalhadoras domésticas imigrantes encontram-se: a discriminação de base étnica, os salários reduzidos, a precariedade dos horários de trabalho, os incumprimentos em relação às tarefas definidas em acordo verbal e a não elaboração de contratos de trabalho.<br>This essay departs from the premise that there is a strong relationship between the domestic work sector, conveying certain specificities which relegate it to a less valuable social position, and immigration, with an increasingly number of immigrant women performing this kind of work. This relationship is framed by the international labour division context and it is influenced by a number of structural factors, in destination countries, that have contributed to build the labour framework of immigrant domestic workers. Additionally, the increasing demand of immigrant domestic workers is closely related to class, gender inequality and ethnicity - "triple discrimination" - determining occupation segregation of immigrant women and impeding job mobility. Like in other European countries, in Portugal, we have been watching an ever growing replacement of autochthonous women by immigrant women in the domestic work sector that arrive to the country in successive migrant movements. In addiction, with the goal of expending less with the household work, employees avoid their duties as so and find immigrant workers more available to accept such conditions. The nature of household work, in general, positions workers in a vulnerable condition. However, this vulnerability is accentuated in immigrant workers due to their condition. Therefore, practices of labour exploitation can take different shapes and forms, varying, in certain cases, with the immigrant status. Within the main problems affecting domestic migrant workers are: discrimination based on ethnicity, low wages, irregular working hours, employees not fulfilling to what was initially agreed with the workers and non-existing contracts.

In this thesis, we make a revision of the extensive literature on the issue. Several perspectives have been developed that we use to frame our research design. We use an institutional approach to analyse immigrant and pro-immigrant political mobilisation in two countries: Portugal and Italy. We use two empirical sets of data to give a general overview of immigrant political mobilisation, on the one hand, and in-depth analysis of political mobilisation with different sorts of actors, on the other hand. We use a political opportunities structures approach for each country, analysing the immigration and immigrant laws in the nineties and beginning of the current decade. We continue with the anaysis of two immigrant groups for each country, comparing political mobilisation forms, frames, identities and repertoires of action promoted by those immigrant groups. This sort of case study approach allows discerning differences and comon aspects among both groups. We finally analyse the civil society structure for each country with the intend to establish the kind of civil society structure and how each state configuration conditions the political mobilisation of proimmigrant actors. Our main findings outline the importance of both factors: the political opportunity structures and immigrant group characteristics. We find different paths to political mobilisation for each immigrant group in each country.

This research examined the integration process of young Nepalese immigrants, who arrived
through family reunification, in Lisbon, Portugal. The study pertained to three central objectives;
i) to determine the integration process of these young Nepalese immigrants ii) to understand the
perspective of the young immigrants’ parents and iii) to identify positive and negative aspects
surrounding these young immigrants’ integration in Portugal. The research used a mixed-method
approach; including in-depth interviews, focus-group discussion and field observation for
qualitative data, and secondary data analysis for quantitative data. 17 participants, consisting of
fathers, mothers and young people belonging to six Nepalese families, were engaged in semistructured interviews. This was complemented with a focus group discussion among 7 young
Nepalese immigrants, and a consistent field work midst the Nepalese circle. The study also
analyzed relevant secondary data related to Nepalese families and young immigrants in Portugal.
The dissertation summarized the context of young Nepalese immigrants’ integration in Portugal
through the lens of citizenship, labour market integration, school integration, housing conditions,
language acquisition, culture, gender perspectives, leisure and interests, belongingness to the
country and future ambitions. The study defined that the time spent in the receiving country and
the age of the young immigrants at arrival play a vital role in determining how well the young
immigrants integrate into these various dimensions, or vice versa. It also found that majority of
Nepalese young immigrants faced challenges for language fluency, school integration and
sociability with Portuguese counterparts, with some facing issues of bullying as well. The study
also ascertained that there was emergent problem in Nepalese youth in Lisbon such as drug and
substance abuse which can be an indicator of a negative outcome of integration. It additionally
distinguished the parents’ outlook on integration process of their children which underlined
pervasiveness of parental longings regarding the young immigrants’ integration into the labour
market, but not preferring them to integrate into the youth culture and lifestyle of Portugal.

The globalization process has been a contributing factor to the intensification of the
phenomenon of mobility of individuals between countries. This event, constant in recent years,
has unveiled comings and goings of academically qualified immigrants between different
nations. Consequently, their active participation in the labor market proves to be an added value
and a contribution to the development of the economy of the destination countries. Thus, and
given this relevance, it is essential to ensure a strong and effective integration, through
measures and policies, of these individuals in organizations, in order to retain and attract them.
This research, with the participation of 256 individuals, revealing the impact of integration on
organizational commitment, also reveals that this correlation among immigrants in Portuguese
organizations is not as strong as that of national individuals, which shows that integration
policies in companies and in the labor market in Portugal are not yet as strong as desirable.<br>O processo de globalização foi um fator contributivo para a intensificação do fenómeno da
mobilidade de indivíduos entre países. Este acontecimento, constante nos últimos anos,
desvendou vindas e permanências de imigrantes academicamente qualificados entre diferentes
nações. Consequentemente, a sua participação ativa no mercado de trabalho, revela-se uma
mais valia e uma contribuição ao desenvolvimento da economia dos países de destino. Assim,
e dada esta relevância, é essencial garantir uma integração forte e eficaz, através de medidas e
políticas, destes indivíduos nas organizações, de modo a retê-los e atraí-los. Esta investigação,
que contou com a participação de 256 indivíduos, revelando o impacto da integração no
compromisso organizacional, revela também que esta correlação entre imigrantes nas
organizações portuguesas, não é tão forte quanto a de indivíduos nacionais, o que demonstra
que as políticas de integração nas empresas e no mercado de trabalho em Portugal ainda não
são tão fortes quanto desejáveis.

With an increase of immigration waves from China to Portugal since the 1980’s, the more developed the Chinese community got, calling for research on the newer generations born in Portugal. The second-generation is typically more integrated in the host country in comparison to the first-generation. Chinese second-generation have citizenship, know the language, have access to education, employment and health care, and rarely partake in ethnic work. However, being a product of migration, these individuals can still experience a divided sense of identity. This research analyses the socio-economic and cultural integration of generation 2.0 Chinese individuals in Portugal, between the ages of 19 and 30 years old. To develop this research, semi-structured interviews to 15 individuals were conducted, addressing issues on family, educational and professional background, cultural identity and discrimination. Additionally, the most relevant obtained result shows a correlation between high levels of academic attainment and financial stability, and lower levels of integration in the future. It concludes that, to work towards integration, Portugal must adopt a multiculturalist society, while second-generation Chinese individuals could benefit from overcoming cultural barriers and improve their relationships with Portuguese natives. Nevertheless, Portugal’s lack of opportunities, low wages and discrimination occurrences, are the highest contributing factors for low rates of integration.<br>Com o aumento das ondas de imigração da China para Portugal desde a década de 1980, mais desenvolvida a comunidade chinesa se tornou, apelando à investigação sobre as novas gerações nascidas em Portugal. A segunda geração é, normalmente, mais integrada no país anfitrião em comparação com a primeira geração. A segunda geração chinesa tem cidadania, conhece o idioma, tem acesso a educação, emprego, cuidados de saúde e raramente continua inserida em negócios da comunidade. No entanto, sendo um produto da migração, estes indivíduos podem experienciar uma divisão em relação à sua identidade cultural. Esta pesquisa analisa a integração socioeconómica e cultural de chineses da geração 2.0 em Portugal, com idades compreendidas entre os 19 e os 30 anos. Para o desenvolvimento desta pesquisa foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas a 15 indivíduos, abordando questões sobre família, formação académica e profissional, identidade cultural e discriminação. Além disso, o resultado obtido mais relevante mostra uma correlação entre altos níveis de escolaridade e estabilidade financeira e menores níveis de integração no futuro. Conclui-se que, para melhorar a integração, Portugal deve adotar uma sociedade multiculturalista, enquanto que os Chineses de segunda geração poderiam beneficiar ao superar barreiras culturais e de relacionamento com os indivíduos de origem portuguesa. No entanto, a falta de oportunidades em Portugal, os baixos salários e as ocorrências de discriminação são os fatores que mais contribuem para as baixas taxas de integração.

This study examines the relationship between changes in natives’ and immigrants’ employment in the Portuguese economy. Using rich matched employer-employee longitudinal data it accounts for heterogeneous effects with respect to the nationality of the immigrants and gender of natives. The main result, in line with previous evidence, shows that natives are positively affected by the presence of immigrants in the same firm, firm-job title or industry-region, irrespectively of natives’ gender. Nevertheless, male natives seem to be negatively affected by the presence of immigrants coming from EU15 countries, suggesting substitutability between the two groups in the production process.

Today the study of the living experiences of immigrants from the perspective of immigration network
is a hot topic. However, there are different opinions on the impact of Immigration Network on the
integration of immigrants into the host labor market. This paper aims to enrich the knowledge in this
field and explore the integration of young Chinese immigrants into the labor market, in the context of
Portuguese labor market. 23 young Chinese people living in Portugal were interviewed and their
narratives were interpreted by using the thematic analysis method. The results show that the
immigration network not only has a positive impact on young immigrants' labor market integration,
including employment, market retention and social resources acquisition, but also has negative effects,
including low-quality work, self-closure and over dependence. In addition, the pursuit of money and
the pursuit of elite education by the 2nd generation of young immigrants have been discovered and
discussed.<br>Atualmente o estudo sobre as experiências de vida dos imigrantes da perspetiva da rede de imigração é
um tema quente. No entanto, existem diferentes opiniões sobre o impacto da Rede de Imigração na
integração de imigrantes no mercado de trabalho no país anfitrião. Este artigo pretende enriquecer o
conhecimento nesta área e explorar a inserção dos jovens imigrantes chineses no mercado laboral, no
contexto do mercado de trabalho português. 23 jovens chineses residentes em Portugal foram
entrevistados e as suas narrativas foram interpretadas à luz do método de análise temática. Os
resultados mostram que a rede de imigração não só tem um impacto positivo na inserção dos jovens
imigrantes no mercado de trabalho no país anfitrião, incluindo emprego, retenção no mercado e
aquisição de recursos sociais, mas também tem efeitos negativos, incluindo trabalho de baixa
qualidade, autofechamento e dependência excessiva. Além disso, a perseguição por dinheiro e a
perseguição por uma educação de elite por parte de jovens imigrantes da geração 2 foram descobertas
e discutidas.

Foi verificado que as atitudes negativas face aos grupos étnicos (preconceito), mas não o Luso-tropicalismo, nem o nacionalismo tradicional, tiveram um impacto significativo na oposição face à imigração. Porém, o Luso-tropicalismo predisse mais tristeza e menos indiferença no cenário. Também quisemos estudar como é que a interacção entre o género dos participantes e o género do imigrante influenciou as emoções no cenário ficcional. Os participantes do género masculino sentiram-se simultaneamente mais solidários e humilhados quando o imigrante era um homem, diferindo das participantes do género feminino a um nível significativo. A nossa investigação contribui para o conhecimento da complexidade dos efeitos emocionais da adesão ao Luso-tropicalismo em situações possíveis de competição no mercado de trabalho. Também contribui para a evidência de que o género dos imigrantes deve ser tomado em consideração ao estudar-se a aceitação de uma população imigrante pelos membros de uma sociedade de acolhimento.<br>The ideas concerning the lack of prejudice among Portuguese people, having its historical roots in the Luso-tropicalist beliefs related to the Portuguese colonialism, have been vastly disseminated in the Portuguese common sense. Our aim was to study among Portuguese college students the linking of these Luso-tropicalist beliefs to the attitudes towards immigration and to the emotions facing a fictional scenario of labor market competition that involves an immigrant, and in which the participant is put in disadvantage. It was found that only negative attitudes towards ethnic groups (prejudice), but not Luso-tropicalism, and also not traditional nationalism, had a significant impact on the opposition towards immigration. However, Luso-tropicalism predicted more sadness and less indifference in the fictional scenario. We also wanted to study how the interaction between the gender of the participants and the gender of the immigrant influenced the emotions in the fictional scenario. Male participants felt simultaneously more solidary and humiliated when the immigrant was a man, differing from the female participants at a significant level. Our research contributes to acknowledge the complexity of the emotional effects of adhesion to Luso-tropicalism on possible labor market competition situations. It also contributes to the evidence that the gender of the immigrants must be taken into account when studying the acceptance of an immigrant population by the members of a host society.

Since the first group of immigrants from China arrival to Portugal, from 1950s on, more Chinese people came to work and live in this south European country. Under an in general flexible migration policy, Portugal becomes one of the springboards for immigrants entering EU. Migration is always a reflection of policy and economics, while concurrently affects the local society. Portugal has a long history of both emigration and immigration. Since immigrants are taking an important role in the hosting society, it is vital to pay attention to their living conditions. Second generation of immigrants is a group that grows up with the local’s. They are both contributors of supporting and creating future. In fact, this group in general is more vulnerable, with high risks and less care while growing up. My research chose the Chinese second generation of immigrants from 15 to 24 years old. Through Socialization and Social Integration theories, I am trying to find out their integration situations from three perspectives of family, school and community. The conclusions prove second generations of Chinese immigrants are mostly family-oriented, have a high drop-out rate and a high cognition of Chinese culture. Culture Identity highly manipulates the second generations’ practice in the three fields. Educational level limits their social development. The important findings are: Positive correlation between the social integration level of second generations’ and their parents’. The integration ability strongly represents their Family Social Capital competence. Besides, the local Chinese organizations play as the platform for second generations’ social participation and personal realization.<br>Desde o aparecimento do primeiro grupo de imigrantes provenientes da China, durante os anos cinquenta do século passado, mais chineses vieram viver e trabalhar neste país do Sul da Europa. Num processo correspondente a uma política de migração relativamente mais flexível, o país de chegada tornou-se uma das portas de ingresso na Europa para estas pessoas. A migração é sempre um reflexo da política do país, afectando simultaneamente a sociedade local. Portugal tem uma longa história de emigração e imigração. Posto que os imigrantes estão a desempenhar um papel mais importante na sociedade de acolhimento, é vital prestar atenção às suas condições de vida. A segunda geração de imigrantes é o grupo que cresce juntamente com o grupo local. Os seus membros são uma parte das futuras forças criativas e de suporte da sociedade. De facto, este grupo é mais vulnerável, correndo riscos maiores e dispondo de menos cuidados durante o seu crescimento. Esta pesquisa escolheu a segunda geração de imigrantes Chineses entre os 15 e os 24 anos de idade. Recorrendo às teorias da socialização e da integração social, procvrei descobrir os seus níveis de integração sob perspectivas familiares, escolares, laborais, de organização social e de identidade cultural. Os resultados permitem concluir que os imigrantes chineses da segunda geração são predominantemente guiados pelos valores familiares, apresentam uma elevada taxa de desistência escolar e um conhecimento mais elevado da cultura chinesa. O seu nível educacional limita o seu desenvolvimento social. Duas importantes constatações são a correlação positiva entre o nível de integração social dos imigrantes chineses de segunda geração e aquele dos seus pais. A sua capacidade de integração representa a importancia do respectivo capital social familiar. Adiciónalmente, as organizaçãoes locais chinesas agem como plataformas de participação social e realização pessoal para as segundas gerações.

The study population of this research is Nepalese women and the purpose of this study was to understand the Nepalese woman migrant’s experience of integration in Portuguese society as well as in Nepalese society in Portugal. This research also tries to understand the components that affect their integration especially in terms of cultural, interactive, structural and identification integration. It also identifies the support system of Nepalese women which help them to integrate in the society better. The research design for this study is qualitative research which is also supported by statistical data analysis and exploratory interview with the key informants. Qualitative study was carried out to understand the integration process through experience and feelings shared by the participants. Data were conducted through 10 individual interviews which were transcribed and analyzed through content analysis. The research found that most of the women who were researched were educated. Participants who came to Portugal alone expressed that they were ‘independent’ and participant who joined their husband are also independent in work place but did not express that they were independent directly.

Russian diaspora in Portugal grew notably in these last decades, yesterday`s work migrants became long residents, brought their children and family and attracted increased flow of compatriots to the country. The purpose of this study was to understand the interdependence between the integration of the parents (primarily mothers) to the host society and their parental practices and change of parenting styles according to the classification introduced by Baumrind (1967) and using ecological approach. The integration level of Russian immigrants in Portugal was studied through such dimensions as housing, language, participation in the labour market, perception of Portuguese culture, values and lifestyle, social networks and contacts with home country. The aim was to discover how these dimensions influence the family dynamics (e.g. sharing of responsibilities and time management) and children`s experience in the new country (such as schooling, participation and friends-making). It was a qualitative research of 10 Russian speaking immigrant women raring children in Portugal, focusing on participant`s unique experience and perception of the new country. The data was collected in Russian language through in-depth individual interviews using semi-structured questionnaire, the data was also expanded by field notes made during observations and fieldwork data collected on-line. The results showed that parenting styles indeed could change due to immigration in the process of internalizing lifestyle and values of the host society, but at the same time they also depend on child`s age and mother`s socio-economic status in the host society and the feeling of empowerment/helplessness connected to it.

This study discusses the experiences and perceptions of Nepali transnational fathers who are practicing or have practiced parenting from distance in Lisbon, Portugal. It explores their migration trajectories, transnational parenting experiences before reunification (if already united with children) and their family reunification plans (of those who are yet to be united with their children). Symbolic interaction theory provides basis of analysis, which is supported by theoretical concepts on transnational parenting. The eight participants of this qualitative study were selected by non-probability sampling using snowballing technique. Most in-depth interviews were taken online due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation. Thematic analysis was employed to categorize the findings into themes and sub-themes. According to the study’s findings, Nepalese travel to Portugal with aim of bringing their families to settle in Europe.
Despite many family reunification requirements set out by the Portuguese immigration policies, Nepalese migrants perceive Portugal as flexible gateway to enter Europe and invite their families. Furthermore, available social networks allowed the migrants to sustain their lives and get jobs after moving to Portugal, which encouraged them to plan family reunification. In terms of transnational parenting practices, regular communication and sending of remittances helped Nepali fathers to maintain transnational ties with their families at home. Significantly, social interaction with different relations influenced their perception on fathering and parenting practices.<br>Este estudo discute experiências e percepções de pais transnacionais nepaleses que praticam ou praticaram a parentalidade à distância em Lisboa, Portugal. Explorei trajetórias de migração, experiências parentais transnacionais quando já vivem com os filhos em Portugal ou planos de reunificação familiar quando ainda não se uniram aos filhos. A base de análise é a teoria da interação simbólica, apoiada por conceitos sobre parentalidade transnacional. Os oito participantes deste estudo qualitativo foram selecionados por amostragem não probabilística através da técnica de bola de neve. A maioria das entrevistas foi realizada online devido à
pandemia Covid-19. A análise temática permitiu categorizar os resultados em temas e subtemas, observando-se que os nepaleses migram para Portugal com o objetivo de trazer as suas famílias para se estabelecerem na Europa. Apesar dos muitos requisitos de reunificação familiar definidos pelas políticas de imigração portuguesas, os participantes consideram Portugal como uma porta de entrada flexível para entrar na Europa e trazer as suas famílias. As redes sociais disponíveis permitiram ainda encontrar recursos de sustento e arranjar emprego em Portugal, incentivando-os a planear o reagrupamento familiar. Nas práticas parentais transnacionais, a comunicação regular e o envio de remessas ajudaram os pais nepaleses a manter laços transnacionais com suas famílias no Nepal. Destaca-se que a interação social em diferentes relações influenciou percepção sobre a paternidade e práticas parentais.

eficaz; e, no caso contrário, quais os fatores que levam a situações de descriminação e

Depois de uma análise histórica do contexto político, económico, social e cultural de
Moçambique contemporâneo, serão também abordados aspetos relativos às razões que
levaram estes jovens a imigrarem para Portugal, e também à hipótese de um eventual
regresso.
Em Portugal, através da recolha de dados empíricos qualitativos, procurar-se-á perceber
qual é a representação que os jovens imigrantes têm da sociedade de acolhimento; se
constituem e se identificam enquanto uma comunidade moçambicana em diáspora; e se
são presentes práticas eficazes de aculturação.<br>This essay aims to examine the migratory trajectory of young Mozambican
Africans migrating from Mozambique in the last 15 years, in particular to the Lisbon
Metropolitan Area. Their integration and reception strategies will be addressed as main
aspects; whether it is considered to be a positive and effective integration; and, if not,
what factors lead to situations of discrimination and racism.
After a historical analysis of the political, economic, social and cultural context of
contemporary Mozambique, aspects related to the reasons that led these young people to
immigrate to Portugal and also to the hypothesis of a possible return will be discussed.
In Portugal, through the collection of qualitative empirical data, an attempt will be made
to understand the representation that young immigrants have of the host society; if they
represent and identify themselves as a Mozambican Diaspora community; and whether
efficient acculturation practices are present.

conducted with former students, teachers, administrators, and community leaders who
have all experienced or are linked to the public education system in those areas of
Toronto. The question, “why has there been a low educational attainment rate among
Portuguese-Canadian students in Toronto?” was asked of the interviewees. The first
three chapters provide background information regarding the struggles of the Portuguese in their homeland as well as Portuguese immigrants in Toronto in order to contextualize the information garnered through the interviews. The final two chapters present the thoughts of the interviewees, regarding the subject matter, which were collected during the study.

Focusing on Chinese immigrants, this study investigated the role of length of residence and social networks on social inclusion, which we operationalized as psychological adaptation, socio-cultural adaptation, economic adaptation and political participation in the Portuguese society. The study found that:(a) Chinese immigrants’ overall social networks was positively correlated with psychological adaptation and socio-cultural adaptation; (b)Chinese immigrants’ length of residence in the host society was positively related to psychological adaptation and socio-cultural adaptation; (c) The overall social networks but not differentiated networks mediated the relationship between immigrants’ length of residence and their socio-cultural adaptation and the relationship between length of residence and psychological adaptation. Limitations of the study and implications for further research were discussed.

the country's economic activities and pension issues become more and more serious, the role
of foreign immigrants in the life of Portuguese society has become increasingly important.
Logically that the second generation of immigrants will gradually grow to become an
important force in building Portuguese society. However, due to various reasons, such as
ethnicity, economic conditions, and social climate, the social status and development of the
second generation of immigrants may not be in line with that of the native youth, and there
are concerns about the degree of social integration and trends in their social status. This study
focuses on the second generation of Chinese immigrants aged 17 to 35 years’ old who are of
mainland Chinese origin and currently living in Lisbon, Portugal, with residence status. I will
try to explore the identity of the second generation of Chinese immigrants in a multicultural
environment by combining the theories of comprehensive cultural identity and social
integration with the characteristics of the local Chinese society and integrate data from three
aspects: family environment, schooling, and community. The results show that the second
generation of immigrants has a strong sense of family mission and responsibility, has a higher
level of education than the previous generation, and has a positive correlation between their
professional development and the level of social integration of the previous generation.<br>Portugal tem uma longa história de acolhimento de imigrantes, devido ao envelhecimento da
população, as atividades econômicas do país e as questões previdenciárias se tornam cada vez
mais sérias, o papel dos imigrantes estrangeiros na vida da sociedade portuguesa tem se
tornado cada vez mais importante. Logicamente que a segunda geração de imigrantes irá
gradualmente crescer para se tornar uma força importante na construção da sociedade
portuguesa. Entretanto, devido a várias razões, tais como etnia, condições econômicas e clima
social, o status social e o desenvolvimento da segunda geração de imigrantes pode não estar
de acordo com o da juventude nativa, e há preocupações sobre o grau de integração social e
tendências em seu status social. Este estudo se concentra na segunda geração de imigrantes
chineses de 17 a 35 anos de idade que são de origem chinesa continental e que atualmente
vivem em Lisboa, Portugal, com status de residência. Vou tentar explorar a identidade da
segunda geração de imigrantes chineses em um ambiente multicultural, combinando as teorias
de identidade cultural abrangente e integração social com as características da sociedade
chinesa local e integrar dados de três aspectos: ambiente familiar, escolaridade e comunidade.
Os resultados mostram que a segunda geração de imigrantes tem um forte senso de missão e
responsabilidade familiar, tem um nível de educação superior à geração anterior, e tem uma
correlação positiva entre seu desenvolvimento profissional e o nível de integração social da
geração anterior.

Num país que está a tornar-se cada vez mais multicultural, como Portugal, é fundamental e natural que se queiram respostas relativamente à integração dos jovens com raízes culturais diferentes da população autóctone e, quanto à sua assimilação de símbolos culturais portugueses ou somente da cultura dos pais.
Assim, há uma necessidade de se entender o posicionamento cultural do individuo e se este apresenta níveis de integração, visto que estas questões terão uma repercussão no seu futuro, como na sua tomada de decisões – permanecer ou sair de Portugal, opções de formação, expetativas de vida ou até mesmo o trajeto profissional.
Este estudo tem como base, entrevistas efetuadas a 12 jovens, entre os 18 e os 30 anos, com raízes africanas ou nativos do continente africano.
Assim sendo, nesta investigação pretende-se comparar os filhos de imigrantes africanos e os jovens imigrantes africanos, em termos de identificação cultural, desempenho escolar, perspetivas futuras e trajetória profissional, querendo-se também averiguar se há um seguimento do padrão de vida dos seus pais.
Ao contrário do que se pensa, estes jovens assemelham-se aos jovens autóctones portugueses. A sua identificação cultural posiciona-se entre a cultura africana e a portuguesa, fazendo uma junção de ambos; o seu desempenho escolar e perspetivas de vida vão depender da sua escolha individual, podendo ser bom como mau, como qualquer outro jovem autóctone português; e, a sua trajetória profissional pode começar por ser idêntica à dos pais, mas é algo temporário, por vezes.<br>In a country that is becoming increasingly multicultural, as Portugal, is fundamental and natural to want answers regarding the integration of young people with different cultural roots of the indigenous people and their assimilation of Portuguese cultural symbols or only their parents’s culture.
Thus, there is a need to understand the cultural positioning of the individual and if it presents levels of integration, since these issues will have an impact on their future and decision-making - stay or leave Portugal, academic options, life expectations or even the professional path.
This study is based on interviews made to 12 young people between the ages of 18 and 30, african descendents or natives.
Therefore, this research is intended to compare children of african immigrants and african immigrant youth, in terms of cultural identification, academic performance, future prospects and career path, also wanting to examine whether their are following their parents life pattern.
Contrary to popular belief, these young people are similar to portuguese indigenous youth. Their cultural identification ranks among the african culture and the portuguese, connecting both; their school performance and life prospects, depending on their individual choice could be good or bad, like any other portuguese native youth; and their professional path can start by being identical to their parents, but at times it is something temporary.

No final da década de 90, surge em Portugal um fluxo inesperado, abrupto e expressivo de imigrantes
com origem nos países do Leste europeu. Se, inicialmente, a estadia destes imigrantes em Portugal
podia ser encarada como temporária, o reagrupamento familiar poderá ser indicativo de uma intenção
de regresso ao país de origem mais tardia ou mesmo de fixação em território nacional.
Neste trabalho faz-se uma reflexão sobre a integração das famílias de origem ucraniana em
Portugal em diversas esferas sociais, dando-se especial enfoque à integração na Escola. Assim, através
da realização de entrevistas, analisaram-se as representações que este grupo de imigrantes tem da
escola e das aprendizagens escolares, as práticas de acompanhamento que desenvolvem e, ainda, o
contacto que mantêm com as suas raízes culturais. O estudo tenta, ainda, identificar quais as suas
maiores dificuldades de integração, bem como as expectativas de futuro.
A análise da informação recolhida permitiu perceber que há indícios de que uma parte
significativa dos imigrantes ucranianos pondera não regressar ao seu país de origem. Alguns já
compraram casa em Portugal e conseguiram reduzir o hiato entre as suas qualificações e a profissão
que desempenham. No que respeita à escolarização dos filhos, apesar de estas famílias serem muito
críticas em relação à escola portuguesa, verificou-se que algumas conseguem identificar aspetos muito
positivos e que reconhecem que os objectivos e o resultado final são muito semelhantes, tendo apenas
métodos diferentes. Ficou mais uma vez patente a importância da obtenção dos diplomas escolares em
Portugal.<br>In the late 90s, appeared in Portugal an unexpected, abrupt and expressive immigration flow with
origin in the Eastern European countries. If initially, the stay of these immigrants in Portugal could be
seen as temporary, family reunification may be indicative of an intention to return later to their
country of origin or even fixation on national territory.
This study reflects upon the integration of the families of Ukrainian origin in Portugal in
several social spheres, with particular focus on school integration. Thus, through the realization of
interviews were analysed the representations that this group of immigrants has of the school and
school knowledge, the monitoring practices that they develop, as well as how they maintain in contact
with their cultural roots. The study tries also to identify their greatest difficulties of integration, as well
as future expectations.
The analysis of the collected information has allowed to understand that there are signs that
many Ukrainian immigrants may not return to their country of origin. Some have already bought a
house in Portugal and were able to reduce the gap between their academic skills and the job they
perform. Regarding the education of children, although some families remain very critical about
Portuguese schools, they were able to identify some highly positive aspects and to recognize that at the
end, the objectives and results are very similar and just have different methods. It was once again
highlighted the importance of obtaining a school diploma in Portugal.

RESUMO - A migração é um dos principais desafios mundiais da Saúde Pública e Portugal não é
exceção. Com o aumento considerável, em Portugal, da população imigrante asiática
nos últimos anos, afigura-se importante perceber o seu estado de saúde, bem como a
evolução do mesmo com o decorrer dos anos de permanência no país e a mudança de
comportamentos associados ao mesmo. Existe na literatura uma teoria com o nome
“healthy immigrant effect”, a qual consiste na premissa de que um imigrante é mais
saudável aquando da sua chegada ao país de acolhimento do que a população natural
do mesmo, sendo que, com o decorrer do tempo, a sua saúde tende a piorar,
convergindo a mesma até ao nível de saúde da população natural desse mesmo país.
Com o objetivo de melhorar a promoção da saúde e a gestão da saúde da comunidade
imigrante no país, este trabalho consiste no estudo deste fenómeno na população
imigrante extra EU a partir do Inquérito Nacional de Saúde 2014. Foram utilizadas
variáveis demográficas e de caracterização do estado de saúde (autoapreciação,
doenças crónicas, utilização de serviços de saúde e comportamentos de risco) para
caracterizar as populações imigrante e portuguesa, comparando-as em cada variável.
Foi também verificado se o estado de saúde da população imigrante piora com o tempo,
utilizando um cut off de 5, 10 e 20 anos. Conclui-se que existe uma tendência para a

exception. Recently, there has been a considerable increase, in Portugal, in the number
of Asian immigrant population and it is important to realize their health status, as well as
its evolution throughout the years of stay in the country and the influence of the native
culture in their behaviors. In literature we can find a theory called "healthy immigrant
effect", which consists in the premise that an immigrant is healthier upon arrival in the
host country than the native population of that country, however it tends to worsen,
converging to the levels of that country's native population. Aiming to improve the health
promotion and health management of the immigrant community in the country, this study
consists in the study of this phenomenon in the extra EU immigrant population from the
National Health Survey 2014. Demographic and health status characterization (selfevaluation,
chronic diseases, use of health services and risk behaviors) variables were
used to characterize the immigrant and the Portuguese populations, comparing them in
each variable. It was also verified whether the health status of the immigrant population
worsens over time, using a cut off of 5, 10 and 20 years. It was concluded that there is a
tendency for deterioration of health status over time, however more information is
needed to affirm that this phenomenon occurs effectively with immigrants in Portugal.

A imprevisibilidade e a incerteza marcam profundamente o mercado de trabalho e a sua evolução, caracterizando-se, por um clima altamente competitivo que contem elementos menos positivos, como condições de trabalho diminutas que alteram a forma como nos envolvemos no trabalho e que cada um tem que gerir em desigualdade, isto é, entregue a si independentemente do seu contexto.O contributo da psicologia para a compreensão do desenvolvimento da carreira permitiu a sua constituição como área específica de conhecimento e de intervenção social. Os desafios da sociedade moderna têm vindo a desorientar a generalidade das pessoas – e a população imigrante em particular – ameaçando a inclusão social e comprometendo o acesso a um trabalho digno. O trabalho é um direito humano básico devendo dar significado à nossa vida, mas nem todos têm o privilégio de escolher um emprego que corresponda aos seus interesses pessoais e que permita exprimir o seu autoconceito.Assim, contrariando a visão tradicional da psicologia vocacional, a Psychology of Working Theory o concilia o entendimento multifacetado do trabalho digno com a justiça social, abrindo a possibilidade de analisar o comportamento vocacional e o desenvolvimento de carreira em populações mais vulneráveis focando-se não só o indivíduo, mas também nos fatores que contribuem para dificultar o acesso ao trabalho digno, como a marginalização ou as dificuldades económicas e os seus efeitos.Trata-se de um estudo com valor social focado na perspetiva de 6 trabalhadores imigrantes em Portugal através de entrevistas individuais, que partiram de um guião semiestruturado, realizando posteriormente uma análise de conteúdo que resultou em 11 categorias. Os resultados do presente estudo evidenciam que, para os imigrantes a trabalhar em Portugal, a Remuneração, a Satisfação Pessoal e o Desenvolvimento de Carreira são as categorias que mais representam a dignidade no trabalho.<br>Globalization is the order of the day and its positive effects in the world are evident, however, access to decent work is becoming increasingly challenging and complex. Unpredictability and uncertainty deeply mark the labor market and its evolution, characterized by a highly competitive climate that contains less positive elements, such as diminished working conditions that changes the way we get involved in work and the way that each one has to manage in inequality, that is, delivered to you regardless of your context.The contribution of psychology to the understanding of career development has allowed it to be constituted as a specific area of knowledge and social intervention. The challenges of modern society have been disorienting most people - and the immigrant population in particular - threatening social inclusion and compromising access to decent work. Work is a basic human right and should give meaning to our lives, but not everyone has the privilege of choosing a job that corresponds to their personal interests and that allows them to express their self-concept.Thus, contrary to the traditional view of vocational psychology, the Psychology of Working Theory reconciles the multifaceted understanding of decent work with social justice, opening up the possibility of analyzing vocational behavior and career development in more vulnerable populations, focusing not only on the individual, but also on factors that contribute to making access to decent work difficult, such as marginalization or economic difficulties and their effects.This is a study with social value focused on the perspective of 6 immigrant workers in Portugal through individual interviews, which started from a semi-structured script, subsequently carrying out a content analysis that resulted in 11 categories. The results of this study show that, for immigrants working in Portugal, Compensation, Personal Satisfaction and Career Development are the categories that most represent dignity at work.

Neste trabalho é realizado um estudo das instituições governamentais do Brasil que recebem os imigrantes e refugiados. Num contexto de aumento do número de pessoas que procura proteção internacional no Brasil, são mais as instituições centradas nos aspectos legais do que aquelas que se ocupam da recepção de imigrantes, o seu acolhimento e integração. Tendo como estudo de caso o Alto Comissariado para as Migrações (ACM), procurámos analisar o modelo desenvolvido em Portugal para receber e integrar migrantes e refugiados. Além disso, é examinado como esse modelo poder ser implementado no Brasil. A metodologia é essencialmente qualitativa. O estudo baseia-se em pesquisa documental e em entrevistas a pessoas com um profundo conhecimento do ACM. São sugeridas algumas boas práticas para implementação no Brasil e feitas sugestões de melhorias no modelo português.

In a context of increase in the number of people who demand international protection in Brazil, more institutions are focused on the legal aspects rather than those which receive immigrants. Taking as case study the High Comissioner for Migration (ACM), the intent of this work is to analyze the model developed in Portugal for the reception and integration of migrants and refugees. It is futher examined how this model could be implemented in Brazil. The metodology employed is essentially qualitative. The study is based on documentary research e and interviews with experts with deep knowledge of ACM. A number of good practices for implementation in Brazil are advanced along with suggestions for improvements to the portuguese model.

As migrações constituem um fenómeno ancestral. Muros e políticas repressivas não
travam os movimentos de pessoas impelidas pela procura de uma vida melhor. A
crescente diversidade demanda estratégias inclusivas que promovam os direitos humanos,
a igualdade e o respeito. As imagens de carácter negativo, os preconceitos e os
estereótipos relativamente aos imigrantes, espalham sementes de ódio e rancor,
motivando atitudes discriminatórias que minam tal compromisso. Este relatório tem como
objeto de investigação as imagens e os preconceitos existentes no imaginário da sociedade
relativamente aos imigrantes. Assim, colocamos como questão orientadora: “Existem
preconceitos nas imagens e representações da população relativas aos imigrantes?”.
Este relatório pretende contribuir para uma análise dos preconceitos relativamente
aos imigrantes, exercício fundamental para a promoção de sociedades tolerantes e
inclusivas. O presente fundamenta-se na experiência de estágio realizada na AIDGlobal,
apresentando esta organização e expondo as tarefas realizadas neste período. Corroborado
tanto por pesquisas, assim como por questionários e testes aplicados aos participantes de
sessões formativas, o presente relatório contextualiza as migrações em Portugal,
explorando as perceções que estes participantes têm dos imigrantes e da migração, assim
como de si mesmos. Os resultados fazem transparecer a falácia das narrativas lusotropicalistas,
evidenciando preconceitos e estereótipos de carácter negativo impregnados
de um racismo subtil. A Educação para o Desenvolvimento, ao desconstruir mitos e
elucidar interpretações erróneas, surge como ferramenta para a promoção da tolerância,
e, consequentemente, de sociedades plurais e igualitárias.<br>Migrations are an ancient phenomenon. Walls and repressive policies cannot stop
people moving in search of a better life. Growing diversity asks for inclusive strategies
that promote human rights, equality and respect. Negative images, prejudice and
stereotypes towards migrants spread seeds of hate and resentment, leading to
discriminating attitudes that undermine this commitment. The subject of investigation of
this report are the images and prejudice concerning migrants, that subsist in the imaginary
of the society. Therefore, we pose as a guiding question: “Does prejudice subsist in the
images and representations regarding immigrants?”.
This report aims to contribute to an analysis of prejudice surrounding immigrants,
as a fundamental exercise for the promotion of tolerant and inclusive societies. Based on
an internship at AIDGlobal, this report presents the organization and the tasks carried out
during this period. Supported by research, as well as surveys and tests conducted on the
participants of the training sessions, this report analyzes migrations in Portugal, exploring
the perceptions that these participants have towards immigrants and migration. The
results display the fallacy of the luso-tropicalist narratives, emphasizing negative
prejudice and stereotypes encompassing a subtle form of racism. Global Education, by
deconstructing myths and shedding the light on misinterpretations, acts as a tool
promoting tolerance and consequently plural and egalitarian societies

Estudar as disputas e negociações identitárias realizadas pelos imigrantes brasileiros em
Portugal e assim historicizar o período, por meio das ações promovidas por esses sujeitos em
diáspora e das reações da sociedade recetora portuguesa. Os estudos académicos
desenvolvidos sobre a imigração brasileira em Portugal abordam muitos estudos de caso, com
pouca preocupação histórica. Partindo da produção existente dos vários estudos, se propõe
desenvolver uma pesquisa exaustiva sobre o assunto, possibilitando com isso, uma perspetiva
geral sobre este movimento, que tomou proporções impactantes na sociedade portuguesa, no
processo de assumir a liderança de estrangeiros em Portugal. As relações entre Brasil e
Portugal são inegáveis, além de questões históricas comuns, existe uma produção de sentidos
e imagens pelos meios de comunicação e pelos governos dos respetivos países que
(re)alimenta essas proximidades. Criou-se até uma expressão que sintetiza essa ideia: "povos
irmãos". A partir deste trabalho de história social, busca-se desconstruir os discursos e fazer
emergir as contradições que envolveram os processos das migrações de brasileiros para
Portugal entre os anos de 1986 e 2007. Para a realização desde objetivo, foram analisadas
diversas fontes, como jornais associativos, revistas, jornais religiosos, jornais de grande
circulação portugueses, entrevistas orais, filmes, documentos governamentais portugueses,

Considerando a expansão da dinâmica imigratória presente no nosso país e a decorrente
fixação progressiva de um contingente assinalável de população escolar com diferentes
origens nacionais, a presente investigação visa, por um lado, conhecer o desempenho
escolar destas crianças e jovens, considerando um leque diversificado de variáveis de
ordem estrutural e processual, e, por outro, compreender o modo como os contextos
familiares e escolares se constituem enquanto elementos potenciadores ou redutores das
possibilidades de materialização do ideário da igualdade de oportunidades propiciada
pela instituição escolar nas sociedades modernas.
Para o efeito, comparam-se os resultados escolares de alunos com diferentes
origens nacionais – Portugal, Cabo Verde e Índia – e diferentes condições socioculturais,
presentes em escolas do ensino básico da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa e
explora-se em que medida as dinâmicas familiares e os processos escolares se
relacionam com a desigualdade de desempenho. Recorreu-se à aplicação de inquéritos
por questionário a 837 alunos distribuídos por oito escolas, à recolha de informação
estatística em cada uma das escolas e realizaram-se entrevistas a progenitores de
crianças com origem cabo-verdiana e indiana.
A análise do conjunto da informação recolhida permitiu identificar a supremacia
do desempenho escolar dos alunos com ascendência indiana tanto em relação aos alunos
autóctones como aos de origem cabo-verdiana, mesmo controlando o efeito de outras
variáveis estruturais. Foi, ainda, possível detectar diferenças entre os grupos de alunos
quanto à sua vivência familiar (modos de relação com o país de origem e com a
escolaridade) e à sua experiência escolar (comportamento, relação com as pessoas e
com as aprendizagens).<br>Considering the expansion of immigration in our country and the resulting progressive
introduction of a considerable contingent of the school population of different national
origin, the aim of this research is, on one hand, to ascertain the school performance of
these children and young people by considering a diverse range of structural and
procedural variables and, on the other hand, to understand how social contexts (family
and school) increase or reduce the possibilities of achieving the ideal of equal
opportunities propitiated by school in modern societies.
We compare the school results of pupils of different national origins – Portugal,
Cape Verde and India, and different socio-cultural circumstances in basic education in
the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and look into how far family dynamics and school
processes are related to unequal performance. We distributed a questionnaire to 837
pupils at eight different schools, collected statistics at each school and interviewed the
parents of children of Cape Verdean and Indian origin.
Our analysis of the information gathered showed a superior school performance
from the pupils of Indian origin both in relation to Portuguese pupils and those of Cape
Verdean origin, even when allowing for the effect of other structural variables. We also
detected differences between groups of pupils with regard to their family lives
(relationship with country of origin and schooling) and their school experience

Este trabalho de investigação intitulado Os Imigrantes Brasileiros em Portugal e a Educação ao Longo da Vida pretende compreender os diferentes tipos de relação que esta população estabelece com a Educação e Formação em Portugal e as variáveis que interferem nessa relação.
Para o efeito, foi aplicado um inquérito por questionário aos adultos imigrantes brasileiros que procuraram o Gabinete de Inserção Profissional (GIP) da Casa do Brasil em Lisboa entre Novembro/2012 e Agosto/2013.
Como principais conclusões destacam-se as seguintes: a) verificou-se que existe uma relação positiva (sobretudo a nível das representações) dos inquiridos com a Educação ao Longo da Vida; b) as intenções e as práticas se diferenciam quando relacionadas com o grau de qualificação dos inquiridos; c) ausência de práticas de formação nas organizações onde desempenham suas funções; d) as línguas são o tipo de formação de maior interesse da comunidade inquirida.<br>This research work titled "Brazilian Immigrants and Lifelong Education" aims to understand the different types of relationship that this population establishes with the Education and Training in Portugal and the variables that interfere in this relationship. For this purpose, a questionnaire was applied to the adult Brazilian immigrants that, within a given period of time, sought the Professional Insertion Office (GIP) of Brazilian House in Lisbon between Novembro/2012 and Agosto/2013. publicada sobre impactos geracionais e digitais, assim como um estudo empírico sobre o acesso, o uso de novas tecnologias e a motivação organizacional dos denominados
“Nativos Digitais” em comparação com os “Imigrantes Digitais”. Destaca-se a realização de uma abordagem deste tema mais direcionada para a Gestão de Recursos Humanos, com
uma investigação empírica sobre uma amostra da população ativa portuguesa.<br>The term "digital natives" was popularized by Marc Prensky (2001), to distinguish young people
surrounded by digital technologies since childhood, arguing that this influence would impact on
their way of thinking and acting that would differentiate them from older generations.
In this work, a critical analysis on this issue is performed and the possible impact that the entry of
these young people into the labor market can have on organizations in Portugal. In order to do so, a
comprehensive analysis of the published literature on digital and generational impacts was
conducted, as well as an empirical study on access, use of new technologies and the organizational
motivation of the so-called "Digital Natives" compared to the "Digital Immigrants". Worth mentioning is the fact that, in the present work, the approach of this topic is more targeted at Human Resource Management, with an empirical investigation of a sample of the Portuguese active population.
