Kellerman, Mikhalien. "The Constitutional Property Clause and Immaterial Property Interests." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/6536.

Abstract:
Thesis (LLD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The question that this dissertation addresses is which immaterial property interests may be recognised and protected under the constitutional property clause and if so, under which circumstances. The question originated in the First Certification case 1 where the court held that the constitutional property clause is wide enough to include property interests that require protection according to international norms. The traditional immaterial property interests or intellectual property rights (patents, copyright, designs and trademarks) are protected as property in private law on a sui generis basis. Since it is generally accepted that the property concept in constitutional law includes at least property rights protected in private law, it is relatively unproblematic to include intellectual property rights under the constitutional property clause. In Laugh It Off v SAB International,2 the Constitutional Court explicitly balanced the right to a trademark with the right to freedom of expression, which is accepted as authority that at least trademarks may be recognised and protected as constitutional property. The other intellectual property rights may most likely be recognised and protected by analogy. Foreign law as well as international law also indicates that intellectual property should be recognised and protected as constitutional property. However, there are other, unconventional immaterial property interests that are not protected as property in private law. Some are protected in private law, but not as property; others originate in public law; and yet others are not protected yet at all. In terms of the Constitution, South African courts may consider foreign law, but must consider international law. This dissertation determines when these interests may be protected as constitutional property by reference to foreign cases from German, American, Australian and Irish law; regional international law, namely European Union cases; and international law. The conclusion is that unconventional immaterial property interests may generally be protected if they are vested and acquired in terms of normal law, have patrimonial value and serve the general purpose of constitutional property protection. Property theories are also useful to determine when immaterial property interests deserve constitutional protection, although other theories may be more useful for some of the unconventional interests. The German scaling approach and the balancing of competing interests is a useful approach for South African courts to help determine the appropriate level of protection for specific immaterial property interests without excluding some at the outset.

Rotenberg, L. H. "Contemporary art's economy of immaterial production, 1990s-2000s." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1448847/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to offer an unprecedented in-depth analysis of contemporary art and “immaterial labour,” a body of theory emerging from Italian Operaismo in the 1960s that argues for a new conception of labour as abstracted, or “immaterial” as it is no longer based on earlier forms of industrial manufacture. My research investigates how artists might embody the qualities of “immaterial labour” and act as innovators in new forms of exchanges, knowledge, and communication, creating the valued symbolic content of commodities in a post-industrial, service-oriented and knowledge-based global economy. The alignment of art with this new standard of production poses a challenge for today’s artistic praxis that, in the 20th century, found much of its raison d’être in defending art’s autonomy and critiquing art’s status as a commodity. Addressing the notion of art ‘work’ as both a process of making and a good produced by artists, my central research question asks how artists adopt and contest the precarious and flexible working conditions of the immaterial economy. This research offers case-studies of Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, French artist Pierre Huyghe, American artistscollective Temporary Services, and Cuban artist Tania Bruguera, as well as brings together aesthetics, economic and political philosophy to foreground the ways in which immaterial labour might conceptualise and impact both the development of new aesthetic forms, values and uses of art, and the potential for today’s art to resist and critique the dominant forms of exchange and social conditions produced by advanced capitalism.

Solanilla, Demestre Laura. "En primera persona: memòria oral, patrimoni immaterial i internet." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/9122.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis originates from an interest in analysing the relationship established between three apparently disparate areas of knowledge: autobiographical oral memory, Intangible Heritage, and their presence and dynamics on the Internet.
The first area of knowledge, autobiographical oral memory or narration in the first person of personal remembrances, shows an evident collective dimension, not only due to the way in which it is constructed, but also because it affects the behaviour and way of seeing the world of whole communities, and becomes a very powerful signal of identity for social groups. The common remembrances of a social group are the basis on which their shared identity is founded, and form the element that legitimates or makes them different from other persons who do not belong to the same group.
The second area of knowledge, Intangible Heritage, is defined following the recognition of the concept of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2003. This fact, together with the transformations undergone by the world of cultural heritage and museums since the 1970s, has caused great changes at different levels in the way of managing heritage. These changes range from the transformation of institutional models and the appearance of new types of centre to the new definition of the social roles of contemporary heritage institutions.
The third and last area of knowledge is related to the study and analysis of the consolidation of the Internet in the world of cultural Heritage, and how this fact has modified the way that on-line museums work and opened new museology and museography perspectives.
The study proposes the bases for the establishment of a specific museology and museography for the treatment of autobiographical oral memory on the Internet and, by extension, for Intangible Cultural Heritage in general.

Lai, C. I. "Materialising the immaterial : the crafting of Taiwanese bamboo design." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2016. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1478140/.

Full text
Abstract:
A common and affordable material such as Bamboo can be mundane, but may be remarkable in many ways for Taiwanese people. Investigating the ways Taiwanese people see, treat, apply and work with bamboo in their everyday lives reveals its significance in Taiwanese culture, and also its role in crafting and reinventing Taiwanese tradition as represented in the new bamboo designs of recent years. Design is seen here as a hinge between the intangible human domain of creativity and the tangible materials that allow the efficacious techniques to be practiced in order to transform concepts into real objects. This research is a material culture study which scrutinises the mutual relations among ‘cultural techniques,’ ‘self-making,’ and ‘creativity’ focusing on the domain of contemporary bamboo design in Taiwan. It is not only a research of the designs made with bamboo but a study of how bamboo shapes and displays people in the society. I would argue that the cultural significance embodied in its materiality transforms bamboo from a worthless, cheap, and alternative material into a priceless one. Moreover, the technical knowledge developed through the history of making can be a bond into creative design to be built upon, but can also act as a barrier for creativity. Being able to do original design requires various techniques, especially the skills to conceptualise ideas; the ability to draw and to read a drawing are evidently influential. Making is not only a physical act and the exercise of internalities but also the practice of efficacious techniques that allow the process of making an object to transform the people who make it.

Abstract:
International migration is a significant issue in many contemporary societies. It is often analysed through the frame of different representational models. This thesis argues the need for a conceptualization of the migrant through the Deleuzian philosophy of immanence, and immaterial labor practice. The first part of the thesis discloses the problematic aspect of representation and places the figure of the migrant in the Deleuzian philosophy of immanence. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of the dominant mode of economy in contemporary capitalist societies – post-Fordism. Deleuzian angle of the migrant, which is based on desire, change, deterritorialization, and affect is deeply connected with post-Fordist economy and one of its practises – immaterial labor. With immaterial labor, which is based on the intellectual capabilities of human beings build a relation through communication and affect, being the dominant work practise nowadays, this practise as well as the figure of migrant is placed in the field of immanence. This field is based on the refusal of any kind of representation. It places the being in the material world, which finds itself in continuous process of becoming through the creation of relations. Thus, the figure of the migrant, whose life is based on the intensified creation of relations is the paradigmatic form of all subjectivity under post-Fordist logic and conditions, which is based on intensified creation of relations for the... Abstract:
This visual arts project investigates notions of liminality and hybridity regarding the ambiguity of the interstitial position of the migrant. An examination of the migrant’s perspective and perception of cultural identity and the sense of home and belonging also underpins these studies. The project examines how the space between two cultures is experienced, and explores ways in which this might be visually expressed through the construction of fibre and textile art works. The researcher’s personal experience, as a German national now resident in the Cook Islands, provides the basis for reflections on cultural liminality and the ambivalence of feelings towards inclusion and exclusion. Material elements from European and Polynesian cultures such as cloth, fibres, and thread, and non-material elements like concepts and rituals are investigated for their potential to transcend the boundaries of their original culture to reveal the liminal space as source of energy and change. Abstract:
The actual problems raised to any society are the resistance to new forms of appropriation of intellectual work and the bankruptcy of representative system to take care of these changes. The connection of cultural politics with immaterial labor on a Negrian`s perspective of constituent power intends to investigate new ways of resistance and liberation. Public politics related to the culture have two specific moments of intense brightness in Brazil: the period of the Estado Novo and the creation of the National Service of Historic and Artistic Patrimony (SPHAN), in which the modernists have been capable to neutralize the threat integralista and participate in a revolutionary process of creation of a comprehensive and universalist cultural public politic; and the later period of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, that, in an ambiguous way, reopened the discussion about cultural politics. With citizenship garanties established and the access and fruition of cultural rights protected by the constitution from now on, it has been possible to enlarge the concept of culture and harbor the notion of immaterial patrimony. Notions such as culture and the role of the State have been dramatically changed since the first management of the minister Gilberto Gil at the Cultural Ministry (MinC), and the direct consequence is the organization of the National Plan of Culture (PNC). This dissertation intended to expose the political and constitutional impingements related to the cultural public politics and to analyse the transformations of the work at contemporary societies. As a direct consequence, we want to establish the narrow relation between this new form of work and the work performed at cultural activities, since immaterial labor tendency has become a reality.

Karandinou, Anastasia. "No-matter : theories and practices of the ephemeral in architecture." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9507.

Full text
Abstract:
The architectural theorist and practitioner Bernard Tschumi asserts that enquiring and working at the limits of a discipline expands our knowledge and experience. Within this thesis I examine the limits of architecture as they relate to the non-material and the nonvisible elements of space. As Mark Wigley observes in his essay on atmosphere, architects, at different times, have sought to understand, capture and control the otherwise ungraspable aspects of space. The elusive nature of such ephemeral architectural aspects and elements makes them hard to manage and map. Their examination provides a challenging exercise within architectural research. Atmosphere is such an elusive element; as Zizek would call it, it is that which remains always as a backdrop to daily life. It seems to vanish when subjected to conscious scrutiny. Non-visual sensations such as sounds, smell, textures, temperature, clearly constitute invisible elements that are notoriously difficult to represent. As a further example, event, the way in which a space is or could be deployed or inhabited over time, provides another unpredictable and ambiguous design consideration. Spaces relate to performance. The performance of a place constitutes its nature, character, function and meaning. However, the complexity, changeability, and potentiality of spatial performance render it as something abstract and non-representable. As Steven Connor, and Jonathan Hill, amongst other theorists, observe, new media, electromagnetic fields, and digital gadgets, also constitute invisible elements of space. They create invisible fields, territories, links and boundaries, affecting everyday spaces and relationships. So a typology of the elusive and ephemeral characteristics of space would include: non-conventional materials, elements changing over time, electromagnetic fields, electronic equipment, nonvisually representable sensations, situations, processes and events. Attending closely to these themes reveals some key questions. Why do these themes appear (or re-appear) now, at this particular moment in history? How are they related to contemporary thought, practice, and to current shifts in society, culture and technological development? New technology, new means of representation, and emerging design media change both the way in which we inhabit space, and also the way in which we understand and represent it. Digital media allow us to record and represent time and duration. Hence, events and situations occurring over time can be documented and studied. Subsequently, new media can also function as a new tool to think about space, and for designing accordingly. As Marshall McLuhan claimed in the 1960s, the emergence of new digital media has caused a ‘shift in the sensorium’ and has readdressed the significance and role of experiencing and sensing other than through the visual sense. In this thesis I discuss in turn a series of limits and the qualities of the spaces that they reveal. Each chapter title is based on a binary and a theme that indicates its transgression: (a) the visual versus the non-visible – the sensuous (chapter 2), (b) the discourse about the formal versus the material – the performative (chapter 3), (c) the physical versus the digital – the hybrid (chapter 4). In order to examine these themes and explore the design potential they entail, I review relevant literature in parallel with the conduct of a series of design experiments. The experimental processes deployed are of three kinds: (1) mapping and documentation of sensory situations, (2) design experiments that challenge the issues discussed and (3) real-scale interventions that test some of the design ideas at a 1:1 scale and in an actual place. The latter includes a major installation at the 2009 Venice Biennale on the theme of Athens by Sound initiated and designed by a team involving the author.

Coates, Joanne. "Exploring digitised, networked milieu : the Cardiff independent music sector in the age of immaterial product." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2012. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/47016/.

Full text
Abstract:
The rise to prominence of digitised networks and platforms of wireless communication brings with it an increased focus on immaterial labour and production and the transformative effect that it has on economic, political and social relations, both within and across online and offline spheres. The creative industries of the UK are a particularly important sector in this respect, particularly the music industry, whose trajectory from pre-digital to digital modes of consumption and production has been swift and all-encompassing. This study sought to go beyond the traditional mainstream debates over the possibilities and the pitfalls of digitisation (i.e. online piracy and the vilification of those who engage in such practices), and understand both the economic and social bases of change as they were perceived by independent promoters, musicians and audiences within Cardiff’s indie music milieu. This research adopted a multi-method qualitative interpretivist approach comprising semi-structured interviews with musicians and promoters, ethnographic interviews with audiences and participant observation at live music events. It uncovered not only the evolving attitudes to ‘piracy’ within independent operations, but also the manner in which sharing of music and the associated promotion and communication which operates within the Cardiff milieu transforms not only the circulation and sharing of the music itself, but facilitates new forms of social relations across online and offline spaces. The de-commodification of music in its physical form, and its subsequent re-commodification across online and offline modes has resulted in dramatic shifts for the way music is promoted. This also raises important issues of ‘prosumption’ and the extent to which this is present, the changing economic and social value of music, authenticity and music in the digital age and the evolving position of physical forms of recorded music. Singular economic issues, such as piracy, cannot be addressed in isolation from the multitude of other implications arising from digitisation. A much wider understanding of these issues and their impact on musical enterprises, mainstream and independent, is required in order to address the full extent of changes afoot for both business and social interaction.

This research includes technically the production, scanning / tinge and printing of objects / matrices made in transparent plastic polyethylene. This support provides a reflective study and poetic about the different processes of construction of the work, scoring its relationship with traditional and digital technologies, and poetic thinking about the limits of the field. Initially this study focused on the production in the engraving workshop, which was held in a freedom technical and conceptual in the process of creation. The variations of matrices allowed then concentrate production in two opposite techniques: one is the extraction of material (plastic), and the other in collage of material. With the development of these two techniques deployed, the process experimental restricted itself, producing poetic reflections, conceptual searches and increased volume of production. The technique and the concept of engraving developed the work, the processes and considerations involving the manufacture of objects from / matrices until your impressions or final proposals. As path poetic, was questioned the transparency of the object / matrix being immaterial, missing, and their behaviour in steps of the production process, printing and reflection. This supports research on the work of artist Regina Silveira, in times that discusses the immaterial being, under the aspect of the concepts and ways of doing and understand the engraving. So its work built on the line of poetic visual, the daily the artist is a member of thinking and construction of the work, so as to the document which it uses referring to the process of creation.

Clay, Gemma. "Purity, embodiment and the immaterial body : an exploration of Buddhism at a Tibetan monastery in Karnataka, South India." Thesis, Brunel University, 2016. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/12911.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the ritual worship within a monastery from the Dzogchen lineage of Tibetan Buddhism situated in Karnataka, South India. During the Cultural Revolution in Tibet, many monasteries were destroyed and the monks fled to re-establish their religious practices in exile in India. As a result, Tibetan Buddhism now has a much wider international participation group. My research looks specifically at the Dzogchen Buddhist doctrinal understanding of purity and its embodiment in the trikaya; the three pure bodies. I consider the rituals practised in the pursuit of the trikaya, and the associated social processes that are thought to enable the embodiment of purity. I explore folk notions of purity and how they shape bodily experience for the multi-national community that congregate together at the monastery. Practitioners of Dzogchen Buddhism believe that the embodiment of purity results in a dissolution of the body and leads to an “immaterial body”. The achievement of the immaterial, however, is wholly dependent on a very physical, material set of rituals. Drawing upon doctrinal and folk notions of purity, I propose a four-part analytical understanding of purity; that purity exits on a continuum, that the Dzogchen lama is both a symbolic and literally pure, that purity is able to be transmitted, and that purity is situational but dependent on the presence of the lama. I support my argument with ethnographic data from the rituals of the khatag exchange [offering of ceremonial scarves], rabnye [the sanctification of statues], and two types of embodied worship: prostrations [full length bows] and kora [circumambulation of sacred sites].

Valerian, Benjamin. Thesis, Avignon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017AVIG2060/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The immaterial property of local authorities is specific and cannot be reduce to the immaterial property of the State. Some notions of public property law of goods must be define again, whereas the doctrine thought about it, that everything is acquired, and everybody thought to know. For instance, the notion of immaterial good reveals limitations of public property law. Furthermore, immaterial approach reveals also the limitations of the notion of property itself. This property is not simply made anymore that local authorities have, but also, which identify them. Immaterial property understands immaterial goods like local authorities’ name or their know-how. Therefore, the question of the reservation of these “goods” must be asked: property law is it adapted? With the “linguistic or cultural property”, the subject reveals unknown difficulties in public law, beyond of only question of property. If it seems to be too early to talk about an approach apart from property, it is clear that a reflection about the process of reservation without property is necessary. In consequence, with the evolution of public property law to an immaterial approach, and the underlying question of a “public intellectual property law”, in the same way, the question of a law about public authorities, are we attending to a prudent and reserved construction of public immaterial property law?

This work intends - in a very personal way of participative research to design a genealogy of hip hop in Rio de Janeiro, emphasizing the approach of rap music. It tries to show the impact of the new technologies of information and communication over those who produce, consume and live on the hip hop nets. The presence of NICs as well as the cooperative and collaborative ways of hip hop production are approached with the theoretical basis of immaterial work.

Abstract:
The mediated closeness experienced by social media users is built on the ongoing accumulation of personal information by corporate owned social media platforms. Each user’s digital footprint becomes more intricate as this collection continues across their life’s procession, leaving something behind after they die. Social media platforms have become intimately insinuated into life and finally, into death. These haphazard archives were never created with death or grief in mind. But users die, and their friends and family use social media to grieve; death isn’t something a platform or its users can avoid. This thesis examines the ways that death and grief are experienced and how social media is facilitating and changing that process. The study approaches social media and death historically, discursively, and economically. It discusses the history of mediated death, the experience of grief over social media, and the political economy of the socially mediated dead.

Gawne, Mark Alan. "Ontology, composition & affect: the political limits of postworkerist thought." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/13004.

Abstract:
This thesis contributes to contemporary debates around the changing nature of work through a critical engagement with postoperaista (workerist) thought. The categories and concepts of affective labour and immaterial production, particularly as developed in recent postworkerist research, have been important in progressing analyses of contemporary shifts in the arrangements of work and reproduction. The focus upon the affective, emotional and cognitive has contributed to an innovative reconsideration of the growth of service work, cognitive labour, and complex demarcations of production and reproduction. Ultimately, however, this thesis argues that postworkerism reaches a political impasse by grounding labour in an ontology of affect and reinscribing a substantialist account of value. The thesis identifies three key limitations to the existing postworkerist analyses of immaterial and affective labour: historical, intensive and extensive. Each of these limits is a result of the particular way in which postworkerist thought entwines a Spinozist ontology of affect with the category of labour. The thesis develops a critique of the historical construction of affective labour to address the first limit. It addresses the second limit by looking at the mobilisation of affect as a technique of management, and thus as an intensive mechanism in the control of labour. And it encounters the final limit in a discussion of affective technologies and their role in the extensive measurement of work. Having addressed these limits, I show that an analysis of affect in terms of class composition makes it possible to engage the question of affective labour without recapitulating the ontological and political impasse of postworkerism. This latter point is explored through the prism of affective composition.

Abstract:
Existem direitos morais no patrimônio cultural imaterial?
This work aims mainly at the study of the Brazilian legislation applicable to the immaterial cultural heritage created, developed, preserved and held by traditional communities, that can be identified, with the purpose of verifying if those traditional communities hold rights, specially moral rights related to their collective creations. In order to achieve its purpose, this work answered the following main questions, presented on its Introduction Chapter: Is there any protection to immaterial cultural heritage held by traditional communities, granting them rights over it or their traditional expressions belong to public domain? Can the immaterial cultural heritage be ruled by copyright legal framework? Are there moral rights related to immaterial cultural heritage? In order to answer those questions the Brazilian legal framework related to immaterial cultural heritage were analyzed and interpreted as a system pursuant to Brazilian Federal Constitution with the view of understanding the exact content of such rules and the extension of the rights granted. Finally, some cases were also analyzed, as well as law drafts and model-law, which allowed the construction of a proposition to regulate the rights related to immaterial cultural heritage. As main conclusions of such work, it is possible to answer the three questions previously presented, considering that exists legal protection to immaterial cultural heritage held by traditional communities and that Federal Constitution grants certain rights to traditional communities that hold, create and maintain cultural expressions, which shall not be considered public domain. Also it is possible to conclude that immaterial cultural heritage in not the object of copyright law and since there is an omission on Brazilian legal framework applicable to immaterial cultural heritage held by identifiable traditional communities, analogy can be used to fulfill such omission. Therefore, considering that immaterial cultural heritage as well as copyrights intend to protect the creation developed by its author and that both shall be considered as fundamental right, regarding its nature, it is possible to conclude that moral rights shall also be applied to protect traditional communities rights over their cultural expression, at least until a specific sui generis legislation is developed to protect the rights belonging to communities that create and develop immaterial cultural heritage.

Abstract:
The main objective of this dissertation is to identify some effects of the exercise of power and its relations with the desire, in subjects who occupy management positions in public companies. From the context of the prevailing economic order, we identified the immaterial labor as the hegemonic form of work in contemporary society. We demonstrated that the emphasis on relational and communication skills in this type of work shifts the prescription of tasks, characteristic of Fordist work material for the prescription of subjectivity. Taking the concept of activity from the Clinic of Activity proposed by Yves Clot, we conceived the act of working as a result of line of tension that is established between prescribed work and real work. We determined our focus of analysis in the management activity and show that, in the postmodern work, management emerges as a primary vehicle for command and legitimation of the capitalist order. Using the Michel Foucault’s concept of power we conceived the exercise of managerial power as a political technology whose instrumental rationality is grounded in systems of power-knowledge, which, in our survey, are represented by programs management and total quality. From the concept of malaise by Freud, we discuss the link with the subject's culture and methods of social ties in intersubjective relations work. We identified that the instrumental rationality in the postmodern work, under the sign of managerial power, favors perverse arrangements in labor relations. The individualization intensifies and brings about the weakening of collective ties, while the logic of privatization spreads by reducing the public space and devalues the role of politics in the construction of social ties. From the appointment of the decline in the public sphere in this work of Hannah Arendt, and the use of the concept of constituent power in Antonio Negri’s work, we pointed out the intimate link between power and politics and its importance in the exercise of a power that challenges the dominant order, produce disruption and laceration points where the subjects' desire can operate as a resistance to established power. Taking the concept of utopia in his iconoclast shed, we discussed the importance of the utopian function not only in the exercise of power and desire in labor relations, but also as an ethical necessity in the quest for another world from the criticism of this one.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper addresses the aesthetic encounter from the perspective of the writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty on the visible and the invisible. It begins with the premise that from time to time we encounter situations which precipitate a sense of slippage in our experience of the world. The paper proceeds to argue that the arts can provide a point of access to this experience, and that aesthetic theory has, for example, responded to it through the development of the notion of 'the sublime'. The writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and, in particular, aspects of his text The Visible and the invisible, are presented with a view to augmenting this aspect of aesthetic theory. Proceeding from a 'Merleau-Pontian' perspective, the paper explores how the arts can serve to disrupt our conventional sense of space and time - creating ripples in the substance Merleau-Ponty names as 'flesh' - so as to expose the chiasm or blind spot in our experience of the world. The methodology adopted is an experiential one, which draws on the writer's interaction with the selected works of various artists as well as her own practice in glass.

Full text
Abstract:
Background. This thesis directs attention to how attitudes towards immigrants evolve under different contextual circumstances. Unlike previous research that primarily focuses on contextual factors related to the availability of material resources, the included studies explore the influence of less tangible aspects of our surroundings, brought together under the term immaterial contexts. Three kinds of immaterial contexts are in focus: political representatives’ use of nationalistic rhetoric, the parliamentary presence of the extreme right, and the religious context. The studies examine the direct effects of these contexts, but also how individuals’ beliefs, loyalties, and experiences interact with the contextual factors to shape peoples’ attitudes. Methods. The thesis takes a comparative approach where countries serve as the main contextual unit. Data on attitudes and other individual features are gathered from the European Social Survey 2002-2012. To be able to analyze these data in the same model as used for country-level data, the thesis applies multi-level models. Results. The findings support a theoretical expectation that immaterial contexts influence anti-immigrant attitudes. How people perceive immigrants and immigration can be traced to political and religious aspects of their surroundings. Also, it is found that individuals are not passive recipients of contextual influences as their reactions depend on their preferences and experiences. While political representatives influence anti-immigrant attitudes, these effects are strongly conditional both on features of the representatives themselves, and on characteristics and experiences of individuals. For example, individuals respond to political rhetoric by traditional political parties but are not influenced by the same kind of message if conveyed by a party belonging to the extreme right. Conclusion. The thesis is an attempt to widen the very notion of contexts in empirical research, and as such, it is a contribution to the literature on anti-immigrant attitudes. It shows that anti-immigrant attitudes depend not only on material circumstances, but also on immaterial circumstances tied to the political and religious arena. Further, the thesis demonstrates how combining the theoretical perspectives of group threat theory and framing theory implies greater possibilities to conceive of the link between contexts and attitudes, as well as improved theoretical tools to understand when and why such effects do not occur. It signals that research on immaterial contexts is necessary to further advance the comparative scholarship on anti-immigrant attitudes and reach a deeper understanding of how such attitudes emerge and evolve.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a critical reconsideration of the relationship of architectural production with its unique mode of representation: &ldquo
photography.&rdquo
Photography has been interpreted essentially as a technique and a visual medium to document architecture in general. The &ldquo
photograph,&rdquo
in this sense, is regarded as a representational form of documentation and an artistic and material expression of architecture. Besides this conventional value, this study argues that photography not only provides a new medium for the reinterpretation of architectural space, but also a new material and technique for architectural production. In this respect, this study discusses photography as an emerging tool for architecture in which the photograph is conceived as a raw material. As in the manufacturing of a raw material in an industrial process, the main argument of this study is that as long as a photograph is processed with required components, it contributes to architectural production in a comparable manner. Even it has the potential to produce architectural space in its own right. To understand the nature of this architectural space supported by a variety of physical and non-physical characteristics of photography, this study compares two different ways of architectural production with the aid of photographs. Starting with the assumption that there is a radical change in the conception of photography in architecture from an immaterial quality to material essence, this study argues that the photograph is a raw material that can be used to authenticate architectural space from the initial idea to the built object. Therefore, drawing attention to the changed value of photography for architecture over time, the aim of this study is to establish a critical framework to understand and discuss this contemporary function of photography in architecture.

This work analyses the immaterial legacy of the miners of the town of Campos Verdes, as a cultural patrimony, historically contextualizing the town from the discovery of the mine until nowadays. It also aims to evidence the miner s knowledge, contextualizing the idea of patrimony as a local identity category, establishing a relation with Choay (2001), when he shows that the new means offered by science and by technique generate a tendency to enrichment without worrying about preserving the cultural assets, either material or immaterial, as in Campos Verdes. Getting to know how the emeralds were discovered, how the town was settled and emancipated, will be important to understand its historical context, which is on the mind of the inhabitants of Campos Verdes, and that will also help those citizens, who are part of that history, feel that they belong to the cultural inheritance of those mines. In order to have this work done some methodological procedures were used, such as: ethnographic research; analysis of documents; bibliographic research; polls and oral testimonies about the local history. These procedures aimed to investigate the historical context of the town of Campos Verdes, women s life at the mines, and the knowledge of the miners.

Abstract:
This study aimed to verify the existence of consistent elements related to the hypersolicitation described by Gaulejac (2007) in a scenario where the characteristics of contemporary work are increasingly influenced by the fluidity of the events of a liquid-modern society (BAUMAN, 2001, 2009b.) Thus, a case study was conducted from a qualitative and exploratory research which featured 20 young athletes and 5 professionals of the technical committee of the basic categories of a traditional Porto Alegre football college. The data collection occurred through semi-structured interviews that allowed the understanding of the respondents’ universe. Finally, the results were analyzed based on the theory of immaterial labor (LAZZARATO and NEGRI, 2001; GORZ, 2005), an essential practice for the full understanding of the universe of the hypersolicitation study, which clearly demonstrated the symptoms of the hypersolicitation and the consequent changes in the lifestyles of those surveyed. Those results allow comparison of the amateur sports environment with other studies regarding managerial model, which among of other contributions enrich the discussion about the topic itself.

Abstract:
My aim in this thesis is to analyze how the ideals of hegemonic masculinity engendered in an organization are lived and how do they affect the lifestyles of men and women, which implies widening the focus of gender studies in management in Brazil. Although the production of gender in brazilian organizational studies is wide, it narrows to women and their particulars, opposing male and female binary. The male subjects of labor are widely studied, however, are not considered from the perspective of masculinity, which place them as standard workers, norm from which women detach. In other disciplines, gender studies show a plurality of masculinities among which operate power relations, causing some to become hegemonic and operate as a social model in a certain period of time, space and culture (CONNELL, 2003, 1998, 1995, KIMMEL, 2006, 1998, OLIVEIRA, 2004). At the same time, the immaterial nature of work in contemporary (LAZZARATO and NEGRI, 2001), leads to understand the processes of subjectification within organizations (GUATTARI and ROLNIK, 2005). The research, a qualitative case study in an southern oil refinery, lasted for 20 months and made possible to verify and analyze the masculinity ideal constructed and how it was lived in different instances by men and women. The data suggest that the organizational context contributes to the production and valorization of a certain masculinity, which becomes a hegemonic ideal, and also made possible to understand the reproduction of subjectivity, considering the processes of alienation and resistance. As contribution to organizational studies, this thesis provides a indication of the power relationships among masculinities, not just the domination of male over female, and contributes theoretical and methodologically to gender studies by bringing the processes of construction of subjectivity into the gender analysis.

Abstract:
The personal search for liberty in liquid-modern society and immaterial work context, and the consequent need to take risks and to deal with an instable and insecure environment can make one vulnerable as exposed to a countless number of tools, services, methods and techniques for personal development wich promises fast results and increased controle over life experiences. The present dissertation searches to analyse how personal dilemmas experimented in immaterial work context and in liquid-modern society are presentated and worked in the perspective of life coaching. The present study is characterized as an exploratory study and counted with the participation of five professionals who offer life coaching services. The data was collected through individual semi-structered interviews. To analyse the data the content analysis was used. The analysis of the results was developed in a qualitative way from theorical references about liquid-modern society, immaterial work, coaching and life coaching. The results of the research indicates life coaching as a sevice that utilizes management tools originaly aplicated in business devolopement, and a service that corresponds to a demand for personal development in the search for adaptation over changing situations, for excellence in all of life´s domains, and in the search for personal realization, all caracteristics of liquid life. Aligned with the idea that all should be in permanent state of awareness and self management, and deeply merged in the self-help and personal development market sponsored by productivist and capitalist ideology, life coaching is presented as a clear expression of the subjective production notion that is characteristic of a world in predominance of immaterial work. The life coaching has yet been presented as an inconsistent service in terms of it´s strucuture. In Brazil, the lack of consense pointed out over its knowledge base, the lack of regulation over the life coaching formation and the inexistence of premises for life coaching professional performance are elements that justify questioning how appropriate and adequate are life coaches´ capacitation to work out personal dilemmas in immaterial work context and in liquid-modern society.

Abstract:
The theme of this present dissertation relates especially to the current labor conjuncture and its implication to life (BAUMAN, 2007, 2008a, 2008b; DELEUZE, 1998; GORZ, 2005; GUATTARI; ROLNIK, 1996; LAZZARATO; NEGRI, 2001; SENNETT, 2009), to the specificity of fashion models labor (LIBARDI, 2004; LIPOVESTKY, 2007, 2009; PEREIRA, 2008; WISSINGER, 2007, 2009) and to expatriation (CERDIN, 2011; FREITAS, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2009; FREITAS; DANTAS, 2011; DAVOINE; RAVASI; CUDRÉ-MAUROUX, 2011; GONZÁLEZ; OLIVEIRA, 2011; REGO; CUNHA, 2009). The objective of this study was to verify and analyze how the existential consumerist strategy presents itself and how it is modulated in a perspective of living the fashion model live on expatriation. This way, it was characterized as an exploratory quality research and was attended by thirteen Brazilian fashion models who worked or have worked in an expatriation situation. In addition, two bookers that work handling models participated as key informants. The data collection occurred through semi-structured interview. Furthermore, it was requested that each model selected a picture of yours that meant something to the job done during the expatriation and that they talked about it. The presentation and analysis of the results supported three permeable parts among themselves. They discuss about the insertion in the profession, the incentives and speeches that foment the announced fashion models life; to the fashion model incorporation through modeled life; and, finally, considering the previous categories sought what, in an articled way, allowed to say something about the strategy of living the fashion model life on expatriation. This dissertation enabled to realize that expatriation constitutes as a form of legitimation in a fashion model career and as the event in which the own name is set as a trademark.

Moody, Kyle Andrew. "Modders : changing the game through user-generated content and online communities." Diss., University of Iowa, 2014. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/4701.

Abstract:
The influx of new digital media technologies and platforms have made it possible for consumers of media products to more easily create and distribute their own works, which breaks away from the traditional production of culture of media by established, professional creators. Consequently, there has been a rise in the immaterial labor of digital media creators, as well as a formation of online communities of disparately connected users through commonly held interests. Within the medium of video games, this convergence between user and producer of content, the tension between control and innovation of media content and form, online communities and immaterial labor is most clearly seen in the practice of modding, here defined as using legally authorized software to modify video game content. Modding for computer games has been occurring since the early 1990s, and has grown considerably due to the expansion of the internet's capabilities for connecting people and distributing large bands of data. In 2012, Skyrim developers Bethesda Softworks released a free software development tool called the Creation Kit. The Creation Kit allowed computer users to modify the game content, at which point the user could publically release their mods through the authorized Steam Workshop Channel. The Creation Kit was distributed via Steam, an electronic digital games store operated by Valve Corporation, Inc. Because Bethesda required users to play Skyrim through Steam, the Steam Workshop Channel was intended to be the primary distribution and gathering location of the modding community for Skyrim. However, most existing modders already had many previously established third-party modding databases and websites for distribution, which meant that the Steam Workshop Channel was a new and forced entry into the modding community. Using a combination of ethnographic methods (participant observation and interviews) and textual analysis of message board data, and in research gathered between September 2013 and January 2014, this dissertation explores the community dynamics of the modders on the Steam Workshop Channel for Skyrim to help locate the identity politics of the community, as well as navigating the tension between innovation and control within the community. It also explores how a digital media producer attempts to control a space of fan-made production, and what that means for the existing community. I participated and observed conversations on modding community dynamics in specific forums on the Steam Community Workshop for Skyrim. There, I gathered textual data from a diverse sample of conversations located on discussion boards and a diverse set of mods ranging in user-defined ratings (high-rated to low-rated) to highlight the conversational dynamics and implicit and explicit structuring of the community. I gathered materials from over 403 relevant conversation threads on the Steam Community Workshop for Skyrim. I also conducted telephone, web and email interviews with a purposive sample group of 15 modders based on their ranking in the community in order to gather their personal motivations for participating in the group and perceptions of norms, rituals and values in the group. Results indicate that modding communities are hierarchized by historically locating the user within the practice, as well as through extensive technical knowledge and frequency of communication. Heavy users and mod creators separate themselves from "non-modders" or mod users through these practices, defining their identities through discourse and the values of creation. The Steam Workshop Channel was a collision between mod creators and non-modder users, sometimes with clashing ideologies that dissuaded heavier users from fully embracing the Steam Workshop. This study illustrates how Bethesda and Valve were perceived by existing modders, and suggests that companies need to pay attention to how historically located communities of users respond to the actions, policies, membership, and moderation of professional media consumers.

Abstract:
Geograficamente deambulamos pelos centros históricos da Ribeira Grande da ilha de Santiago e de São Filipe ilha do Fogo, tendo sempre presente as boas práticas instituídas noutras cidades que serão alavancas para implementar um novo paradigma de gestão e salvaguarda para os centros históricos cabo-verdianos classificados como património nacional; Abstract: Materiality and immateriality in the construction of the heritage value of the historic centers of Cape Verde: the cases of São Filipe- Fogo and Ribeira Grande Santiago Materiality and immateriality in the construction of the heritage value of the historical centers of Cape Verde: The cases of São Filipe – Fogo and Ribeira Grande – Santiago, is treated in this work through a descriptive and critical analysis of the history of art and heritage bringing to the academic and scientific debate a set of historical, symbolic and heritage values anchored in the material and intangible aspects of the territorial space under study. In the establishment and evolution of any historical center, edifications and other creations are always present: architectural buildings, urban tracings of different typologies, decorative elements and without forgetting all the immaterial cultural activities that are part of the historic center everyday dynamics. In this context, the present work focuses on the evolution, safeguard and forms of management and preservation of the historical centers in Cape Verde with a stipulated beacon that runs from the colonial period, through the awakening of the national consciousness ( Post-independence period) today taking into account the context of the conjuncture in which these historical centers were built, but also integrating the transformations that were suffering, the new functions that were taking over time, and the historical reasons for these changes. Therefore, the buildings are monuments of the times that generate them and also of those who crossed, in an accumulation of temporal extracts and historical meanings that converts them into "memoryscapes". We intend a critical approach that will allow future conservation policies to integrate the changes sustained over time as a factor of heritage resignification of the historical centers in Cape Verde. Geographically we wander in the historical centers of Ribeira Grande of Santiago island and São Filipe Fogo Island, having always present the good practices instituted in other cities that will be levers to implement a new paradigm of management and safeguard To the historic centers of Cape Verdean classified to national heritage.

Abstract:
This dissertation is the result from a research that aimed to describe and analyze the strategy to invent the life of taxi drivers in the exercise of immaterial work, considering the fear characteristics of liquid-modern society. In order to do so, the theoretical basis of the present dissertation the use the following concepts: liquid life, liquid-modern society, fear and lifestyle especially supported in Bauman (1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007a, 2007b, 2008, 2009), Gaulejac (2007), Sennett (2012a), Giddens (2002), Deleuze (1992, 1998); immaterial work supported in authors such as Grisci (2008), Mansano (2009b), Gorz (2005), Lazzarato and Negri (2001). The interviews were conducted with fifteen taxi drivers, one syndicate representative and one instructor from a professional training course for taxi drivers. The semi-structured interviews were conducted at various points in the city of Porto Alegre. A participant observation was also conducted in the professional training course for taxi drivers, summing up to forty-seven hours and thirty minutes of participant observation. Additionally, a focus group was carried with six participants from the taxi driver training course. The collected data were analyzed in a qualitative way following the guidelines proposed by Minayo (2001). The results indicated that the characteristic fear of taxi driver worker relates with fears of liquid-modern society, it is related to the support of themselves and others, driving in the city and the transport of passengers. About the strategy to invent the life of taxi driver, the results showed that it is guided by elements of affirmation and negation.

Abstract:
Much research regarding efficiency in manufacturing industry has historically been focused on the material activities of the shop floor. However, companies that merely focus on material activities when trying to improve lead times, risk losing potential for improvements within immaterial activities such as planning, engineering, design, and purchasing, which often constitute the most time consuming parts of the order fulfillment processes. Engineer to order (ETO) products are particularly time consuming regarding their immaterial activities, and the customer is waiting for the products from the very beginning of the order fulfillment process. Shortening the lead time to customer for ETO products is therefore important for customer satisfaction. The aim of this study is to adapt an existing lead time tree model currently focused on material activities to also include immaterial activities, enabling a full visualization of all activities contained in order fulfillment processes. The lead time tree model would thereby be able to use as a tool when working on shortening the lead time to customer. A further aim of the study is to investigate how the adapted lead time tree model can be used in further areas as well, in addition to visualizing immaterial activities. The adaption of the lead time tree model has been based on the original literary source of the lead time tree model. The original lead time tree model has been analyzed towards theoretical data from a literature study, and towards empirical data about immaterial activities in order fulfillment processes for ETO products, from the case company Kongsberg Maritime Sweden AB (previously Rolls-Royce AB). The result of this has been an adapted lead time tree model that can visualize immaterial activities. Several adaptions of the original lead time tree model have been made for it to be able to visualize immaterial activities, while still keeping the basics of the original model. The adapted lead time tree model comprises information that is normally kept separated and that is important when planning and improving a process. Additional information that is needed for each specific case can also easily be included in the lead time tree. The adapted lead time tree model has proven to have additional areas of use within project planning, improvement work regarding lead time reduction and root-cause analysis, and as a boundary object for communication between internal actors and between internal and external actors. The adapted lead time tree model is presumably able to map and visualize immaterial activities in other fields of business as well, other than manufacturing, as the nature of immaterial activities remains the same across business environments.

The aim of this thesis is to draw a genealogy of the events which led creation to be considered as an integrated activity of capitalism. The creative act, which had the fine Arts as its leading exponent, had been regarded as a natural or divine gift , an exception to the economic regime based on scarce resources and on the value extracted from physical strength. However, in the last years, utterances of creative economy or cultural economy have been focusing on creation to generate social and economic wealth. This tendency is visible when contemporary capitalism is studied in the context of immaterial labour, which has a tangible dimension (the materiality of art works or the bodies which produced them), but it is centred essentially on cooperation, signs and affects, extending itself throughout the capture of subjectivity and of the power of life itself. The hypothesis is that the artists are to be seen as entrepreneurs: those who invest their own lives in search of wealth. Mainly, two theoretical trends were used: researches on biopolitic, governmentality and neoliberalism, which had been initiated by Foucault and expanded by Rose, Negri, Lazzarato, Hardt, among others; and researches about creative economy and cultural industries, exposed by British researchers, such as Bennett, Oakley and Hesmondhalgh, who were partly influenced by Cultural Studies. In order to specify Latin American issues, Canclini s work was also used. There are references about Art History, these include: Gombrich, Shiner and Danto; Spinoza s philosophy and Peirce s semiotics have also been utilized as groundwork for the discussion. Aesthetic was specially studied from Kant s, Schiller s, Osborne s and Deleuze s works. Finally, quantitative and qualitative researches were done to investigate the daily practise of the artists. In conclusion, there are opportunities for the arts, but it is necessary to prevent the artistic movements to enclose themselves in their own production chain or to invest only on funding, disputing for public attention. There are new ways of labour exploitation, but artistic power resists or adapts itself to political and economic affairs

This paper discusses the migratory experience of post-graduation student participating in international exchange programs, understanding that this is a cognitive worker who suffers the extraction of its workforce to the same standards suffered by other workers, regulated by the university that has been crossed by a logic of full administrative imperatives of norms, standards of efficiency and successful models. From the relationship between the Institutional Analysis, Philosophy of Difference and Autonomy of Migration, discusses analyzers that cross training, as the lattes effect , urging productivism; tare contemporary compels us to a state of permanent training; increased international exchange programs, becoming more of a brand name in the search of excellence status, and the process of brain drain, characterized by the migration of skilled workers who are not in their cities or countries, opportunities to channel their qualification. These processes are analyzers of a policy that encourages the circulation process, and also delineates and scans, as can be seen by the experiences of seven students who made the crossings in this study, whose traces left by fragments of stories / modes embodied the conceptual characters, as Deleuze. The international exchange of experiences express the highest degree of requirement of the current mode of subjectivation academic for its feature to give as long immersion in a foreign country and capable of serious effects - positive and negative - in their subjectivity, showing that the paradox and suffering are constitutive of migration and training.

Abstract:
This study analyzed the way how physical beauty has been produced in order to follow the current demands made by the bank immaterial labor. To reach this goal, an exploratory research was conducted with fifteen bank workers that were accessed according to their availability. They work in three banks – one of them public and three of them private – located in Porto Alegre/RS and Cascavel/PR. The data was collected using a visual data collection technique, and the result included speeches and images that were later analyzed. The results indicate the existence of five columns which support the production of physical beauty demanded by the immaterial bank labor. They are related to what is implicit and explicit in physical beauty; to the physical beauty as a criterion for selection; to the production and maintenance of the physical beauty; to the self control and external control of physical beauty; to the current concept of physical beauty and also the current prejudices created by the concept of physical beauty.

Abstract:
This paper is the result of a study that aimed to verify and analyze, from the point of view of workers that underwent cosmetic plastic surgery, if and how physical beautification is a requirement of managerialism to perform immaterial labor. The literature review included immaterial labor, through authors such as Gorz, Grisci and Pelbart, managerialism, through authors such as Gaulejac and Chanlat, and physical beautification, through authors such as Mansano, Bauman and Lipovetsky. This is a qualitative and exploratory research, and six plastic surgeons and six female workers were interviewed, workers who were referred by the surgeons and had undergone plastic surgery. The interviews took place in three cities of Rio Grande do Sul. Data analysis was performed according to Minayo’s parameters (2001). Empirical evidence has shown that, in the case of female workers interviewed, physical beautification may be considered a requirement of managerial management for the exercise of immaterial labor. In addition, they showed that characteristics of managerialist management and immaterial work were found in the narrative of the workers studied. They also showed that the aesthetic plastic surgeons interviewed confirm the thesis that, in the case of the workers analyzed, cosmetic plastic surgery can be considered as a physical embellishment element used in order to achieve a return in the work of each one. Finally, the narratives revealed that cosmetic plastic surgery is also an artifice used by the workers interviewed in an attempt to keep within a certain pattern of physical beautification that can generate income for immaterial labor.

The present work aims to discuss the place from its geographical dynamics experienced under the comparison between the parties of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao and the symbolic representation of the Passion of Christ in Pacatuba-CearÃ, while symbolic reference and as comparative role of Christmas and June cycle parties. It is through the analysis of symbolic representation that the parties give to the place, we seek to understand how the spectacular party defies Pacatuba while heritage. In this sense, the study is directly connected to the Maffesoli metaphor: âthe place makes the link of intangible heritage and religiousâ, in addition to the contributions of Ferrara, Eliade, Di MÃo, Duvignaud and Canclini, and other authors working this issue. The cultural approach in geography, as well as the relevant aid other human sciences such as anthropology and sociology, allows us a required reading for understanding the spatiality of the party. To apprehend it, we held documentary research, systematic field observations, interview with organizers and representatives of the City Hall, in addition to surveys and questionnaires with both locals and visitors, were held. Thus, feature vector dynamics that influence the symbolic place, and who embodies the plot of intentionality, represented by the driving forces: Mythic / Religious, media / Ecosystem and Political / Tourism in an attempt of asset reorganization of this space. Is the challenge of reflection on the alter identity of the two parties put on the spectacle, thanks to or in spite of it, it is the research evidence.

The theme of this dissertation is the design of products and environments in hypermodernism times (LIPOVETSKY, 2004). In this context, the design affirms itself, at first sight, as a symptom of the consumer market which function is to elaborate goods to be commercialized, aiming the constant growth of the profits. However, especially in the last decade, the design has been also considered an apparatus even more able to implement ways of life and subjectivities. The goal of this research is to recognize it in this procedural nature, as a systemic thought expressed by the language that engenders it. The main hypothesis is that the body-media notions (KATZ & GREINER, 2005, 2010) together with the distended mind ones (CLARK, 2011) can redefine the design to beyond the objects functionality and commercialization, explaining the dynamic and singular relations among bodies and environments, in each time that a new product is designed and used. In methodological terms, it is a bibliographic research that punctuates and problematizes some aspects of the history and different conceptions of design, approaching it of bibliographies focused on the study of perception (FERRARA, 2001; REINERT, 2012), of discussions about the immaterial labor (NEGRI & LAZZARATO, 2001) and of the sensitive communication that produces subjectivity (SODRÉ, 2006). As research s corpus, will be exemplified situations related to the interior designer s practice and the ways as its practice are represented by the specialized publications. The expected result is the preliminary presentation of a discussion which invigorates the conceptual debate of the procedural nature of the contemporaneous design, vitalizing at the same time its practice

Abstract:

The research was carried with a group of nurses in a hospital in the interior of the Rio Grande do Sul. It was possible to evidence the effect of the improvement of the immaterial work in nowadays - in the perspective of Hardt, Lazzaratto and Negri. This workers use defense strategies to remain itself healthful and escape of the profession challenges. However, the relationship has a restriction of time and space, what limits the recognition and also the visibility of the contributions to the organization. The patient recognition is the most important, despite it is obstructed by the new demands of the profession.

Abstract:
The main objective of this research is to analyze the immaterial subjects that use convergent mobile devices. In order to understand the topic, we presented a historical background of the means of communication, starting it with the telegraph. Thus, we studied the media evolution and also the technological transformations that the telephone has undergone until the smartphone creation. Later, we presented social- cultural as well as political-economic changes trigged from postmodernity and ciberculture. Those reflections facilitated the investigation of the immaterial production of the subjects that used the smartphones. So, the concepts of empire, crowd and material work were the bases for this research. The methodology applied was the virtual ethnography used to analyze the impacts caused by smartphones in seven subjects’ immaterial work. In order to collect data, semi-open questionnaires and non-structured interviews were applied about the daily use of those types of digital technologies – this information was taken from MSN and SKYPE as well as the diary board annotations. We considered valid the virtual ethnography to carry out a research on ciberculture, since it allows the observations about the analyzed subjects as well as the description of the investigated phenomena. Besides, we also could verify that the Empire biopower, through the convergent mobile devices as smartphones, interfere with the subjects’ immaterial work.

To analyze the interrelations between families-based farmers, work praxis, use and conservation of water and land in the New Amazonia Settlement Project from 2000 to 2017, in the Boa Vista-Roraima agrarian area was the general objective of this thesis. Purpose traced from observation of social, economic and environmental dynamics. Transformative movements in the landscape units of the Lavrado environmental system. Edgar Morin's systemic complexity dialectic approach, combined with the Robert Yin case study, integrated the methodological and epistemological strategy of the research, elements chosen because they allowed to understand and explain the whole and the parts, order and disorder, the objective and the subjective. The environmental perception and the categories of analyzes were constituted in the instruments of data apprehension in the real world. Therefore, Place, program, strategy and immaterial work, made possible to understand, describe and reflect on the processes and the birth of autopoietic organizations in the Settlement. The quantitative and qualitative analyzes reflected the results found. In this trail it was possible to unveil the generative movement of the identity characteristics of the families-based farmers, the identity of the interactions and relationships expressed in environmental history. In the settlement, the site is the place of residence and the farm is the place of work, endowed with topophilic feelings. The multifunctionality of the family agriculture unit, as well as the pluriactivity of labor were evidences captured in the family productive unit, where the family is the centrality, inducing the productive and reproductive processes of social and biological life. Emergencies that originated the social, political and economic organizations, constitutive of a particular culture, reconstructed generationally around a common goal, the struggle for the land in the corners of the northern Amazon. It was found that conservation and degradation walk side by side, in morinian's complementarity, revealing contradictions and recursion, aspects that promote sustainability reflected in uncertainty, diversity, equity and adaptability.
