Abstract:
Thermal imaging is useful for tasks such as detecting the presence of humans and recognizing surrounding objects in the operation of several types of robots, including service robots and personal mobility robots, which assist humans. Because the number of pixels on a thermal imager is generally smaller than that on a color imager, thermal images are more useful when combined with color images, assuming that the correspondence between points in the images captured by the two sensors is known. In the literature, several types of coaxial imaging systems have been reported that can capture thermal and color images, simultaneously, from the same point of view with the same optical axis. Among them, a coaxial imaging system using a concentric silicon–glass hybrid lens was devised. Long-wavelength infrared and visible light was focused using the hybrid lens. The focused light was subsequently split using a silicon plate. Separate thermal and color images were then captured using thermal and color imagers, respectively. However, a coaxiality evaluation of the hybrid lens has not been shown. This report proposes an implementation and coaxiality evaluation for a compact coaxial imaging system incorporating the hybrid lens. The coaxiality of the system was experimentally demonstrated by estimating the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the thermal and color imagers and performing 2D mapping between the thermal images and color images.

Abstract:
Image completion is a process of removing an area from a photograph and replacing it with suitable data. Earlier methods either search for this relevant data within the image itself, or extends the search to some form of additional data, usually some form of database. Methods that search for suitable data within the image itself has problems when no suitable data can be found in the image. Methods that extend their search has in earlier work either used some form of database with labeled images or a massive database with photos from the Internet. For the labels in a database to be useful they typically needs to be entered manually, which is a very time consuming process. Methods that uses databases with millions of images from the Internet has issues with copyrighted images, storage of the photographs and computation time. This work shows that a small database of the user’s own private, or professional, photos can be used to improve the quality of image completions. A photographer today typically take many similar photographs on similar scenes during a photo session. Therefore a smaller number of images are needed to find images that are visually and structurally similar, than when random images downloaded from the internet are used. Thus, this approach gains most of the advantages of using additional data for the image completions, while at the same time minimizing the disadvantages. It gains a better ability to find suitable data without having to process millions of irrelevant photos.

Abstract:
Segmentation is a hot issue in the domain of medical image analysis. It has a wide range of applications on medical research. A great many medical image segmentation algorithms have been proposed, and many good segmentation results were obtained. However, due to the noise, density inhomogenity, partial volume effects, and density overlap between normal and abnormal tissues in medical images, the segmentation accuracy and robustness of some state-of-the-art methods still have room for improvement. This thesis aims to deal with the above segmentation problems and improve the segmentation accuracy. This project investigated medical image segmentation methods across a range of modalities and clinical applications, covering magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in brain tissue segmentation, MRI based multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions segmentation, histology based cell nuclei segmentation, and positron emission tomography (PET) based tumour detection. For the brain MRI tissue segmentation, a method based on mutual information was developed to estimate the number of brain tissue groups. Then a unsupervised segmentation method was proposed to segment the brain tissues. For the MS lesions segmentation, 2D/3D joint histogram modelling were proposed to model the grey level distribution of MS lesions in multimodality MRI. For the PET segmentation of the head and neck tumours, two hierarchical methods based on improved active contour/surface modelling were proposed to segment the tumours in PET volumes. For the histology based cell nuclei segmentation, a novel unsupervised segmentation based on adaptive active contour modelling driven by morphology initialization was proposed to segment the cell nuclei. Then the segmentation results were further processed for subtypes classification. Among these segmentation approaches, a number of techniques (such as modified bias field fuzzy c-means clustering, multiimage spatially joint histogram representation, and convex optimisation of deformable model, etc.) were developed to deal with the key problems in medical image segmentation. Experiments show that the novel methods in this thesis have great potential for various image segmentation scenarios and can obtain more accurate and robust segmentation results than some state-of-the-art methods.

This dissertation proposes study of contemporary Brazilian films focusing on the portrayal of violence in urban spaces in a number of films set in different cities, namely Estorvo, Cidade de Deus, Carandiru, O Invasor, Amarelo Manga, Cidade Baixa and Tropa de Elite. The problem to be discussed in these films concerns the possibility of understanding violence as a political force that destabilizes notions such as unified self, representation, agency, nationality and class. The films analyzed suggest a tension between images of violence, mimetic, coagulated, normalized violence, and violent images, violence as dissemination, irradiation, fragmentation, explosion. Following the recent theorizations about biopolitics and community (which include the thought of Giorgio Agamben, Roberto Esposito, Jean-Luc Nancy and Jacques Rancière), this work explores how this tension suggests a (re)configuration of ways of living together.

Abstract:

This Master Thesis has been conducted at the National Laboratory of Forensic Science (SKL) in Linköping. When images that are to be analyzed at SKL, presenting an interesting object, are of bad quality there may be a need to enhance them. If several images with the object are available, the total amount of information can be used in order to estimate one single enhanced image. A program to do this has been developed by studying methods for image registration and high resolution image estimation. Tests of important parts of the procedure have been conducted. The final results are satisfying and the key to a good high resolution image seems to be the precision of the image registration. Improvements of this part may lead to even better results. More suggestions for further improvementshave been proposed.

Ahmad, Fauzi Mohammad Faizal. "Content-based image retrieval of museum images." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2004. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/261546/.

Full text
Abstract:
Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is becoming more and more important with the advance of multimedia and imaging technology. Among many retrieval features associated with CBIR, texture retrieval is one of the most difficult. This is mainly because no satisfactory quantitative definition of texture exists at this time, and also because of the complex nature of the texture itself. Another difficult problem in CBIR is query by low-quality images, which means attempts to retrieve images using a poor quality image as a query. Not many content-based retrieval systems have addressed the problem of query by low-quality images. Wavelet analysis is a relatively new and promising tool for signal and image analysis. Its time-scale representation provides both spatial and frequency information, thus giving extra information compared to other image representation schemes. This research aims to address some of the problems of query by texture and query by low quality images by exploiting all the advantages that wavelet analysis has to offer, particularly in the context of museum image collections. A novel query by low-quality images algorithm is presented as a solution to the problem of poor retrieval performance using conventional methods. In the query by texture problem, this thesis provides a comprehensive evaluation on wavelet-based texture method as well as comparison with other techniques. A novel automatic texture segmentation algorithm and an improved block oriented decomposition is proposed for use in query by texture. Finally all the proposed techniques are integrated in a content-based image retrieval application for museum image collections.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract High-resolution resistivity images can be impacted negatively by several factors, especially in high-conductive water-based mud (WBM) systems. Additionally, borehole and drilling environmental parameters like elevated levels of drilling dynamics, multiple rotation regimes of the drill string, the logging while drilling (LWD) imager's eccentricity and excessive salinity are major factors, if uncontrolled while drilling, can result in severe image quality degradation. Even though such control is desired, it is not always possible. To overcome these conditions and their related artefacts, this article demonstrates a recently developed correction method to restore an acceptable definition of fine features from such heavily affected images. The implemented, multi-stage, correction methodology is based on the LWD raw image dataset and comprises a series of sequential corrections based on the examined environmental artefacts and their severities. The image correction is conducted in a strict order to take most effect. For full transparency of the correction, all intermediate steps are available for quality control purposes and enables the user to potentially improve certain correction steps if required. The final correction level is one image with the most detail restored possible, honoring the data contained in the raw dataset. This study focuses on the specific objective of identifying fine structural features in slim lateral boreholes, drilled through carbonate reservoirs under uncontrolled and unfavorable environmental challenges. These conditions are a challenge for high-resolution LWD resistivity imager data. The outcome of the correction methodology results in a remarkably sharper definition of fractures and faults (high-dip and high-contrast features) and reduction of the artefacts of LWD imager/string eccentricity effects. In addition, recovery of most of the lost information caused by severe drilling dynamics and associated image dataset spike artefacts. A comparison of structural features from the final corrected LWD image dataset to wireline (WL) imager was conducted and good repeatability was concluded between both different technologies with similar WBM salinity properties. The methodology enables the LWD WBM high-resolution resistivity imagers to deliver up to standard image quality in extreme downhole drilling and environmental conditions.

Abstract:
Abstract The heterogeneous carbonate reservoir is the most important exploration target in Sichuan basin. It is challenging to identify the potential flow units in the tight carbonate reservoir. High-resolution borehole resistivity image can reveal the dissolution features such as vugs or fractures in the pay zone. Operators in Sichuan Basin have acquired lots of borehole resistivity image using water-based mud imager in key exploration wells to identify potential reservoir. The oil-based mud has become increasingly popular in exploration and development because it reduces complex drilling practices reducing drilling costs. The new generation oil-based imager is used in these new wells. The borehole resistivity image can be obtained from both OBM (oil base mud) imager and WBM (water base mud) imagers. It is important to understand the response differences through the comparisons between different borehole imaging technologies in the same wellbore. The objective of this study is to understand the responses and refine the rule of oil-based mud borehole image interpretation in tight carbonate reservoir. The operator has logged both WBM and OBM imager in the same wellbore at different times. The WBM resistivity image is acquired in water-base mud conditions in the beginning. Then drilling fluid system was changed to OBM, and 200 meters were drilled further in the borehole. Finally, the OBM imager was logged in the hole. A comparison between the WBM resistivity images and OBM resistivity images are carried out. Increased understandings of the image log responses in this vuggy or fractured carbonated reservoir were obtained. The borehole resistivity image from WBM and OBM imager is highly correlatable over most of the logging interval as they both show similar resistivity response (bright / dark) on both images for the same geologic feature. The new generation OBM resistivity imager is proven to have similar applications as the WBM resistivity could offer. In fact, the OBM borehole images has higher resolution than the WBM borehole image in most of the intervals, especially in high resistivity formations. It was found that the responses of vugs or fractures can be interpreted slightly different in some intervals. Only the unfilled vug will have resistive response in OBM image while it will be very conductive in the WBM image because it was invaded by the resistive or conductive mud. The responses of induced fractures or natural fractures will be slightly different, which is influenced by formation conditions such as Rt/Rm. The induced fracture could be conductive or resistive under different logging conditions. This case study improved the understandings of the OBM imager response in tight carbonate reservoirs. These observations can be used as a reference for borehole image interpretation in similar reservoirs.

Abstract:
Abstract Blind deconvolution techniques were used to enhance scanning electron microscope (SEM) images in the range of 200,000x to 500,000x magnification. Typical SEM samples were imaged including a gold island reference standard, a plasma delayered integrated circuit, and an integrated circuit cross section. Image resolution improvement up to 40% was observed. However, it was necessary to use 16-bit TIFF images with greater than 120:1 signal to noise ratio, which required 10 minute frame times.

Abstract:
Fractal textures occur in natural scenary or satellite images (clouds, ocean waves). However, processing of fractal image data to extract measurements such as fractal dimension is highly computation-intensive when serial digital methods are used. Massively parallel nonlinear optical processing methods are proposed to characterize fractal images in real time. A photorefractive real time image processor performing a combined convolution/correlation operation is used to measure the correlation dimension of sample fractal patterns. The optical algorithm employs an image autocorrelation performed simultaneously with an optical convolution by using a spatially multiplexed array of 9–100 discs of various radii setting a range of scales. A digital neural network in the correlation plane evaluates the maximum intensity in each light patch and computes the fractal dimension. By placing phase screens or window functions in the third port, additional fractal analyses may be accomplished, including iterated function system encoding. Double convolution involving two different images and a kernel provides scale sensitive image comparison, closely related to wavelet analysis. Real time nonlinear optical coprocessing appears useful in several different approaches to characterization of fractal imagery. Preliminary experimental results will be presented.

Abstract:
Techniques for 3D reconstruction of scenes based on images are popular and support a number of secondary applications. Traditional approaches require several captures for covering whole environments due to the narrow field of view (FoV) of the pinhole-based/perspective cameras. This paper summarizes the main contributions of the homonym Ph.D. Thesis, which addresses the 3D scene reconstruction problem by considering omnidirectional (spherical or 360◦ ) cameras that present a 360◦ × 180◦ FoV. Although spherical imagery have the benefit of the full-FoV, they are also challenging due to the inherent distortions involved in the capture and representation of such images, which might compromise the use of many wellestablished algorithms for image processing and computer vision. The referred Ph.D. Thesis introduces novel methodologies for estimating dense depth maps from two or more uncalibrated and temporally unordered 360◦ images. It also presents a framework for inferring depth from a single spherical image. We validate our approaches using both synthetic data and computer-generated imagery, showing competitive results concerning other state-ofthe-art methods.

Abstract:
The expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm based on maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) has been used for restoring simulated quantum-limited noncoherent imagery in our previous work.1 Its performance in these computer simulations has motivated us to further test the algorithm on three-dimensional (3-D) real data. In recent experiments, we used an accelerative version of the EM algorithm for this testing.2 3-D optically sectioned images of a fluorescently labeled biological specimen were used in these experiments. These 3-D real data were collected as a stack of 32 128 × 128 images. To reduce the computer execution time and memory space, instead of reconstructing the full 3-D image, we reconstructed a pair of stereo images by applying the slice theorem of computerized tomography (CT). Fig. 1 shows the 17th slice out of the stack of the 32 collected images. This image contains both in focus and out of focus portions. A stereo pair reconstructed by MLE after 100 iterations is shown in Fig. 2.

Abstract:
A new 2 1/8-in. outer-diameter photorealistic imager for oil-based muds (OBM) has recently started field testing in unconventional formations in North America. To obtain the best interpretation of its measurements, a two-step quantitative inversion workflow has been developed with a performance similar to the existing inversion workflows for the regular high-definition OBM imagers. The new inversion workflow provides borehole resistivity images, borehole rugosity images, and borehole dielectric permittivity images as well as multiple quality curves. The modeling of the new borehole imager is performed with a 2D axisymmetric finite element code. An efficient forward model is developed by fitting the tool response tables into fourth-order polynomials in terms of the sensor standoff, formation, and mud impedivities for broad ranges of model parameters. The fast forward model based on the polynomial fitting is calibrated against the actual tool measurements in a laboratory setup and applied in the inversion algorithms. The inversion workflow is tested with synthetic data and the inverted model parameters are compared with their true values to study and analyze their corresponding measurement sensitivity and optimize the inversion input parameters. It is used to invert several field test datasets in unconventional wells. The results show that the inversion results provide critical added value for formation evaluation, showing geological features that would otherwise be missed, such as fracture properties. Projection-based formation impedivity images, as available for the regular high-definition OBM imagers, are ideal for conductive formations but suffer from a rollover effect in resistive formations. In comparison, the image formed from the inverted formation resistivity does not roll over and is more consistent for resistive formations. The image formed by the inverted standoff reflects surface conditions of the borehole and can be used to interpret whether the fractures and the faults are open, closed, or damaged in the drilling process. Multiple image examples are given from unconventional wells to demonstrate that the inverted standoff image can reveal fractures when there is insufficient or even no contrast in medium properties. The inverted standoff image also serves as a diagnostic tool for interpreting borehole and tool conditions during the measurements. The inverted permittivity may have a larger dynamic range than the resistivity especially for unconventional formations, thus providing an alternative and potentially clearer borehole image.

Abstract:
The properties of mirage images corresponding to a given atmospheric model can be graphically summarised in two distinct ways: the image space1, and the transfer characteristic2. The former shows the apparent heights of surfaces of constant elevation, and is useful for estimating images of objects that possess considerable longitudinal extent, i.e. varying distance from the observer. The transfer characteristic is more convenient for objects concentrated near a single plane at a fixed distance from the observer. Detailed image construction, however, is laborious with both representations: typically, the points on a line drawing of the object are individually mapped into new apparent positions and joined by straight lines to create a line drawing of the image3. Entry of object data is slow; either individual x,y coordinates are entered by hand, or the object can be traced on a digitising tablet. Because the computed image is still only a line drawing, it is not entirely satisfactory. Certainly it is not convincingly realistic when compared with a direct photograph of a mirage.

Abstract:
Some aspects are considered of the images of isolated pinholes, small openings in an otherwise opaque field, and pinspots, small opacities in an otherwise clear field. Image formation is treated using scalar diffraction theory and the Kirchhoff approximation. The power in a pinhole image varies as the square of the area of the pinhole, while the power missing from a pinspot image varies as twice the area of the spot. Pinhole and pinspot images are not complementary. Pinspot images are much more sensitive to the size of the source, even for small spots. Computer imaging simulations show the variation of pinhole and pinspot images with their size and with the source.

Abstract:
Microfossils represent an important part of studying past depositional environments and determining ages for the strata they are found within. The key to ascribing paleoenvironmental interpretations to the sediments in which a microfossil is found is accurate identification of the microfossil. A number of techniques can be used to identify microfossils, including ones that use key features, morphologies, and characteristics from imagery acquired using a scanning electron microscope. A low-cost, efficient alternative method is digital photography of optical microscope images. This technical note presents a method for acquiring photos of microfossils and two methods for compiling them into high-resolution images using focus stacking. The process is described in four main steps: image acquisition, exportation, focus stacking, and annotation.
