Full textIn the West, several studies on the psychopathology of overweight attribute it to being a somatic action expressing or resulting from an individual and/or family psychological malaise of the adolescent. Excess weight which would therefore be a symptom of an unconscious image of the individual and/or family body carrying marked narcissistic fragilities (Carof, 2017; Sanahuja & Vicente, 2018; Benoît 2020). However, our study carried out in an African socio-cultural context tends to demonstrate the opposite and allows us to underline the importance of the socio-cultural crucible of evolution of the overweight adolescent or not, in the construction of his body image. In fact, the Western psychopathological understanding of overweight, like other Western psychopathological theorizations, depends on the socio-cultural environment of identification, emergence and evolution of the phenomenon or problem. An apprehension and psychopathological theorizations of overweight which may therefore not make sense at all in another socio-cultural context. Indeed, overweight in the African socio-cultural framework in general and Togolese in particular is first and foremost a body phenomenon, banal like a small, short, tall, or thin body. Socio-culturally, the overweight body is perceived as signifying a development of body and mind reflecting health and economic well-being. To describe an overweight person in many African countries, they are said to be “in shape”. Thus, overweight is not immediately pathologized or even less psychopathologized in Africa. It only becomes a problem of the body, and again only a medical pathological problem when it is a case of severe, morbid, or massive obesity because it handicaps the subject's daily life and health. It is therefore this phenomenon of the fat, overweight body through its unconscious image of the individual and family body among adolescents in Togo that this present study proposes to explore, discover, describe, and analyze following a scientific and psychological approach. Thus, independently of overweight but also in connection with it, we start from the assertion that this image of the individual and family body of the overweight adolescent is above all dependent on the image of the social body and therefore of the social gaze about the overweight body, under which the adolescent grew up

Full textWe have tried to establish the body image among teenagers. Literature review concerns some works, in particular those psychoanalytic, on the body, the body image and the adolescence. Methodology and data analysis section shows the procedure used to collect the informations and to analyse the data gathered using the non-directing interview method, the Rorschach and draw test of individual on French youth population (74 samples from 11 to 187 years old and 13 samples from 19 to 21 years old). The results show the importance of a progressive elaboration of the body image : from the chaotic body image towards the integrated body image in concomitance with the narcissist restructuring and the acquisition of news identifications. The third part is a study on the adolescence in Gabon. This is a preliminary study in Gabon using non-directing interview method concerning a group of Gabon's teenagers (20 samples from 11 to 18 years old). It emphasizes : the modalties of adaptation at the body, with the influence of the family circle and the culture ; the acquisition of sexual identity actual distresse of Gabon's teenagers to comparison of their French fellows

Full textThis work of research forms part of the practice of a psychologist, working for ten years with adolescents monitored by the Youth Judiciary Protection. In it, we chose to examine the recurring aspect of the violence shown by some of those adolescents. All of those adolescents consulting a psychologist regarding the problem of violence talked about physiological manifestations immediately preceding the transition to action. Our hypothesis will help us frame that question as we try to comprehend the issue of physical violence and the physical life experience that surrounds it. We will base our analysis on the psychological life history of 14 subjects using tools such as interviews and projective tests. During these interviews, the adolescents opened a door to a mistreated body, excited by urges. They evoked the decision to move away from a passive position regarding violence, mistreatment, neglect, their status of object, to take an active position where they would become master and would no longer be submissive to the desire of the other for or against themselves. We think that we should link those violent acts to a feeling of threat to their survival. This existential feeling of insecurity takes its source in archaic anxieties that we were able to detect in all of our subjects. An understanding of their psychological issues could enable the implementation of therapies that are more adapted or at least oriented towards that psychological life

Full textThe objective of this study is to apprehend the self-image of Lebanese youth of both sexes. Our point of view is psychosocial, implementing a clinical and a therapeutic standpoint of what can be termed "maladjustment" in present-day Lebanon. The psychosocial part of our research uses Coopersmith's Self-Esteem Scale, based on the subscales of general, family, professional and social self-esteem. The tool implemented for the clinical part is the Eysenck Personality Inventory (E. P. I. ). The data were collected in Lebanon in the context of five trips made between 2008 and 2011, interviewing 252 subjects for the psychosocial enquiry and 30 other subjects for the clinical approach. These young people are between 21 and 28 years of age and live in various geographical areas of the country. The regions were chosen for their political "color", in order to consider the weight of the variable "Political Ideology Belonging" on self-esteem and also to observe the effect of the "Urban" or "Rural" variable. Furthermore, the incidence of the variables gender, religious practice and social group belonging were studied. The scores, divergent and low overall, evidence that the subjects present inappropriate management of their self-image. The interpretation of the results displays the predominance of a false self and a paradoxical social identity. Regarding this aspect, the data we collected point out the weight of the profound cultural causes, namely principles, beliefs and customs. Thus, we interpret the distortions in human intergroup cohesion as being constitutional elements of present-day Lebanon. In this thesis light is cast on the adjustment mode used by the Lebanese youth under cultural, moral and social pressures. Our conclusions and in particular the high level of defense seen in self-evaluation — as evidenced by the "Lie" subscale — lead us to consider the place of the mother in the integration of social rules by these young people in their self construction. In this respect, we lay emphasis here on the role of the mother in general, and then in the discussion, we study the role of the Lebanese mother in the mental construction of the young subjects

Full textThis study deals with early adolescence and the body socialization in contemporary context. The research focuses on puberty and appearence and analyzes the role of those two elements in gender socialization. The study was conducted by means of interviews with adolescents and their family and direct observation. The feminine experience of puberty is drawn out by an historical frame and biographic analysis. Then, we show the impact of media, peer group influence and conflicts with parents on adolescent appearence

Full textSelf-harm has become a behaviour that is frequently spotted in the psychiatric clinics for adolescents. Though psychoanalytically-inspired references, we examined the symbolic and subjective scope of these self-inflicted wounds, which are part of the psychic functioning, well beyond an acting out or a mere release. We are therefore proposing to interpret scarifications as a meaningful act, intermingled in the net of adolescent psyche, an act which it is important to take up and explain through words before intending to eradicate it by any means. At a time when there is a pressing desire to rid the patient of his/her problematic behaviours, our work belongs to an opposite trend, giving back the subject modalities their full force meaning, whether conscious or inconscious. We will explore the way in which the meaning of the act affects their adolescent psychic development and how it enable them to reconstruct the pubescent and the infantile within them in a process of subjectivation

Full textThis present thesis belongs to the field of the psychosomatic research. This study proposes a new approach in the treatment of the obesity for teen girls. Through a workgroup in aesthetic physical mediation (named "Look"), the psychic envelope is reorganized by working on the representation of the body, in mutation under the adolescence. The originality of our proposition of intervention on obese body becoming slimmer is the "talking action". More precisely, by using the front door of the symptom related to the corporeal of the subject, we create a shortcut, below the parole, with an approach of the physical envelope external of the image of Self. Therefore, we try to have an effect on the intra-psychic level of the subject to allow him the installation of clearer limits bound to his fantastical images, what will have as a result an intensification of the structure of Ego. By this fact, we strengthen the Ego of the subject by a new demarcation of the Ego Skin. This new unconscious image of Self restores a narcissistic stability to the subject in its body. While leading a transverse study we measured the impact of this workgroup on the processes of the cure and their stability. By means of two projective tests (Rorschach and Test de l’arbre) we compared two groups, one clinical and one test. Only the clinical group has benefited of this workgroup. Our results reveal a better restoration of the psychic envelope and a redefining of the clearer image of the body in the experimental group. This opens new perspectives of understanding and care for this outstanding population. Besides, this work allows a new lighting on the processes of change of the psychic envelope and deformation of the image of the body to the obese subjects so offering a new approach and an understanding of the phenomenon of loss of weight for this population

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to determine effects of pubertal development and societal standards of beauty on preadolescents and adolescents’ body esteem. Therefore, we tried to clarify body esteem concept, in order to work on its multidimensional aspect. Then, we studied the evolution of body esteem’s dimensions with age and gender of subjects. Finally, we attempted to identify the contribution of pubertal development and internalization of media ideals in adolescents’ body esteem. Self-rating oriented questionnaires have been submitted to 963 pre-adolescents and adolescents, aged 9 to 19, in several French schools. Results show that body esteem and internalization of societal beauty standards are changing with age and pubertal maturation level and timing. Through puberty maturation process, girls and boys showed less satisfaction with their physical appearance. During this phase, their level of beauty standards internalization increased. Moreover, we noticed an effect of pubertal timing on body esteem and media models internalization. Gender and age effects on these two variables have been also underlined. Lastly, models internalization has been revealed as the main contributing factor in body esteem prediction. Pubertal variables and BMI are also involved. Appearance culture prevalence and adolescents’ prevention perspectives have been discussed

Full textThis thesis studies the reactions, representations and affects caused by the practices of self-injury by adolescents hospitalized in psychiatry. It is based on a critical and historical analysis of the psychiatric and psychoanalytical literature and on a 9-month ethnographic field study in a psychiatric unit of long term hospitalization. During this field study, 36 non-directive research interviews have been conducted with caregivers, patients and the parents of these patients. These interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed according to the methodology of the grounded theory. The representation of self-injuring patients in the scientific literature is very similar to the feelings expressed by caregivers confronted with self-injury and revolves around four main notions: trauma, deficit, control and aggression. Rather than locating the origin of the feelings triggered by self-injury only within the patients (a psychological perspective), or only within the caregivers (a sociological perspective), this study shows that these feelings are aroused by the encounter between an adolescent and a caregiver around the self-injury.When it is not limited to a disembodied repetition, this encounter induces in all the protagonists back an ambivalent desire of body plasticity at the intrapsychic level and an intimate, perfect and preverbal communication at the intersubjective level. Nevertheless, at the same time, the clinical scene of the self-injury recalls the deficiency and the alterity of each of the protagonists and, above all, the failure, frightening and necessary, of the Nebenmensch (near human being).Faced with the intrapsychic and intersubjective wavering provoked by the scarification, both in the adolescent and in the supposed caregiver, it is the existence of reflective and debating spaces and the capacity to show oneself as "defective enough", much more than the belief in a universal and deficient etiology, that allows the clinical encounter to become a field of (inter)subjective construction rather than a terrain of struggle, of control and normative subjugation

Full textThe object of this work of thesis is a reflection on the way the subject can build itself in the adolescence, with its disease. I leave the postulate that about is the somatic chronic disease, mechanisms would be common to all the teenagers confronted with this disease " since always there ". My research work leans on seven teenagers hospitalized in our unity care-studies. The process of subjectivation for these teenagers implies to compose with a " work of the disease ". A possible work of subjectivation of the parents as " parents of a sick child " can allow them not to find itself in dead end in their search for identity. It is a question for these teenagers of regaining control the history of their disease to provide subject future. After the burglary aroused by the disease arrives the puberty, one moment of physical changes which does not save the teenagers affected by a chronic disease, in spite of the fantasy of some patients in this connection. The sick body becomes a pubescent body with the disease and with the juvenile reorganizations. It seems necessary that a feeling of envelope " good enough " was able to establish during the childhood, to allow the teenager not to feel too much not secure. I meet the teenagers in a particular context: they are hospitalized for care, but also for their studies, and are thus separated from their family. The teenager makes a commitment from then on in an initiative of care, first step towards a demand of reflection to arrest better his disease and understand how to build itself with her. Our work of accompaniment also supports them thus in the process of subjectivation, by committing for certain teenagers a real subjective reintegration

Full textThe teenagers approached in this study are placed in a Social Youth Center. To extricate the adolescent from any negative representations he may feel or of which he is the object in this particular context, due both to this affectation and of a Weak parental authority, we apprehend him neither through experienced failures nor those reminded to him, but through his own personal resources. To achieve this, we invite him towards a progression through pictorial creation and the encounter of the art world, followed by a personal production of wide dimensions and its public exhibition. Photographies of works taken at each step of their realization, enables to follow and assess the process of their making and the progression of their creator. This study is completed by a focus towards understanding the personality of each youth through series of expression tests (Rey’s Figure, AT9 and Rorschach). The search for discernment and aesthetic judgment brings the adolescent to a necessary adjustment between his own individual world and other artistic sensibilities. From this confrontation emerge images which might stimulate and widen his capacity of expression and representation of experienced time, at the same time that they participate in a process of personal evolution

Full textObesity has become a real health problem. So far, research has only considered obesity in an individual point of view, but this scourge is still getting increasing, especially among children and teenagers. For this reason, we have decided to bring a new point of view and focus upon the family and the way its members behave with one another, thus placing obesity at the heart of inter-subjective relationships. Hence we chose a psychoanalytical perspective and used groupal projective tools, the projective genography test (a free drawing of a family tree) and the family projective spatiography test (a drawing of the dream house). These projective tests examine the diachronic and synchronic dimensions and materialize a unconscious picture of the family body. We therefore carried out a longitudinal study with a representative sample of 43 families whose teenager suffered from obesity. The results show how weak and vulnerable the envelope of the family group can be. Concerning intersubjective bonds, we spotted a psychic undifferenciation leading to isomorphic relationships. Finally, we noticed that the teenage having been separated from his family proved to be traumatic, and that it reactivated former traumas. Thus families build strong strategies of resistance to counteract the fact that one member is changing, forcing the teenager to regain his previous position within the family, by regaining weight, in order to maintain family homeostasis

Full textThe purpose of this research is to examine the relationships between self-esteem and success at school according to the beauty, the culture and gender of schoolgirls and schoolboys. The general self-esteem has a notable impact on some areas (failure and success, family situation, etc...). Our research aims to study the link between self-esteem, physical as a moral beauty and school success of college students in France. Self-esteem and academic success were measured among the students of two groups of college students (group A, in which the students satisfy the criteria which contribute to identify the character of the beauty of the list set by us and group B in which the students do not meet these criteria). 120 students in the preparatory stage in 8th and 9th grades have participated in the research that has a purpose to know the effect of the physical and moral beauty on the self-esteem and the academic success. The results of this study show differences in general self-esteem between students of both groups A and B. As well, the hypothesis that physical beauty is one of the areas of self perception which is most strongly linked to the general self-esteem of students has been fully affirmed. [etc.]

Full textDance is a taboo, paradoxical art, and is naturally therapeutic in adolescence – as is play for the child. In reaction to the turmoil of puberty, expressing the dancing impulse favours narcissistic reassurance through the auto-eroticism of danced movement, which summons the archaic identification with the mother’s body, the passivity which is proper to the feminine, and the discovery of the “other sex”. This research work aims on one hand at thinking through culture’s modern enthusiasm for dance, whether artistic or as a leisure pursuit, as one of the new forms of expression of the social bond and what (with Freud) we could call “civilized sexual morality”, taking up a collective feminine eroticism whilst organizing it as a symbolic expression in order to create new territories of the political. It also aims at affirming that a certain form of dance therapy, which I shall call mediation dance, belongs to the psychoanalytic field, so as to support the place of psychoanalysis in the treatment of pathologies in contempo-rary clinical practice, and to envisage adapting its techniques to current modalities of the ex-pression of subjectivity (of which adolescence, as the ultimate case, is the paradigm). The clinical material comprises written and filmed documents, analysis of my group therapy prac-tice, and psychotherapeutic interviews. From an anthropological point of view, classical dance appears to be an attempt to mas-ter the overflowing Eros of Dionysian dance; in contrast, free dance, which emerged in the west at the same time as psychoanalysis, aims to unveil the truth of desire through seeking the natural gesture. While it achieves an “other” jouissance, improvised dance (whether urban or contem-porary) is in fact a transitional experience which, in the very dance movement representing birth, allows the subject to experience separation and to move to the inter-subjective encounter which guarantees intra-subjective construction. A group of dancers is a crowd organized by the aesthetic ideal of rhythm, and can thus appear as an essential form of the group and a priv-ileged place of subjectivation for the contemporary adolescent, who finds a place to satisfy his/her need for collective identification and initiation rituals which leave the imprint of culture on the body. In this way dance can be thought of, with psychoanalysis, as a therapeutic medi-ation which is particularly indicated for adolescents suffering from serious narcissistic pathol-ogies. The study of a mediation group associating dance and writing in an outpatient unit shows how improvised dance, like a “danced squiggle” reveals to patients their unconscious body image, which is transformed in transference through contact with therapists and the group. For these adolescents with symbolisation problems, writing supports the subjectivising properties of dance which are deployed in the meeting space

Full textThis paper attempts to go further into female teen anorexia from the perspective of a projective methodology. It brings particularly to light the presence of a blurred frontier of the Ego and an insufficient expansion of pregenital conflicts which affects the construction of the feminine and facilitates resorting to a narcissistic phallic type of defense which helps avoid the experience of separation as much as that of dependency. This paper brings further to light a particular handling of seduction fantasies marked by a reversal of hysterical construction, insufficient repression and the impossibility to invest a passive position. This leads to a specific real life experience marked by an exacerbation of persecution anxiety which seem to be linked to both the insufficiently secured nature of instinctive excitation and the difficulty to regulate it. From its differential approach, this paper also highlights a better efficiency of narcissist defense in those female patients presenting a restrictive profile compared with those presenting anorexia-bulimia stigmas where porosity of envelopes and difficulty of handling drive are more apparent. However, the issues raised appear to be similar. This research paper brings brings further highlight to the cleavage process phenomenon in the Ego leading of anorectic patients to two distinctive types of psychic adjustments which expresses itself either on a persecution mode or adhesive one. This in turn has an influence on the type of psychic structures in female teens which turn out to be independent from symptomatic forms while they may at the same time correspond to two different stages of the illness
