Abstract:
The article considers contrastive linguistics as a discipline that interacts closely with its intralinguistic and applied neighbouring disciplines. Within this framework, the online ontology IMAGACT presents an instrument that allows to contrast how languages lexicalize concrete actions (movements, modification of objects, setting relations among objects, etc.) in their verbs. German and Italian, the language pair considered here, differ typologically in their lexicalization strategies, which leads to difficulties in L2 acquisition, translation and lexicography. The article shows how the corpus-based IMAGACT database, which presents a set of 1010 actions in short films and links them to the appropriate verbs in 15 languages, provides help in these fields, and how it can at the same time empirically support contrastive-typological findings

Abstract:
Abstract Motivation Functional imaging at single-neuron resolution offers a highly efficient tool for studying the functional connectomics in the brain. However, mainstream neuron-detection methods focus on either the morphologies or activities of neurons, which may lead to the extraction of incomplete information and which may heavily rely on the experience of the experimenters. Results We developed a convolutional neural networks and fluctuation method-based toolbox (ImageCN) to increase the processing power of calcium imaging data. To evaluate the performance of ImageCN, nine different imaging datasets were recorded from awake mouse brains. ImageCN demonstrated superior neuron-detection performance when compared with other algorithms. Furthermore, ImageCN does not require sophisticated training for users. Availability and implementation ImageCN is implemented in MATLAB. The source code and documentation are available at https://github.com/ZhangChenLab/ImageCN. Supplementary information Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

Abstract:
Although immune checkpoint inhibitors can induce durable responses in patients with multiple types of advanced cancer, only a limited number of patients have a known reliable biomarker. This study aimed to validate the IMmunotherapy Against GastrIc Cancer (IMAGiC) model, which was developed based on a previous study of four-gene and PD-L1 level, to predict immunotherapy response. We developed a clinical assay for formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction to measure the expression level of the previously published four-gene set. The predictive performance was validated in a cohort of 89 patients with several advanced tumor types. The IMAGiC score was derived from tumor samples of 89 patients consisting of eight cancer types, and 73 out of 89 patients available for clinical response were analyzed with clinicopathological factors. The IMAGiC group (responder vs. non-responder) was determined with a specific value of the IMAGiC score as a cutoff, which was set by log-rank statistics for progression-free survival (PFS) divided the patients into 56 (76.7%) non-responders and 17 (23.3%) responders. Clinical responders (complete response/partial response) were higher in the IMAGiC responder group than in the non-responder group (70.6 vs. 21.4%). The median PFS of the IMAGiC responder group and non-responder was 20.8 months (95% CI 9.1-not reached) and 6.7 months (95% CI 4.9–11.1, p = 0.007), respectively. Among the 17 IMAGiC responders, 11 patients had tumor mutation burden-low and microsatellite-stable tumors. This study validated a predictive model based on a four-gene expression signature. Along with conventional biomarkers, our model could be useful for predicting response to immunotherapy in patients with advanced cancer.

We demonstrated the feasibility and the reproducibility of our method of one-step elaboration of organic nanocrystals in sol-gel shell obtained by atomization, by using various sort of organic molecules, solvent and sol-gel matrices. The use of different techniques of characterization (scanning electronic microscopy, one and two photons luminescence spectroscopy) allowed to optimized the conditions of elaboration to obtain hybrid nanoparticles of small sizes, with a maximum of fluorophore, highly luminescent and biocompatible. The scanning electronic microscopy and the electronic diffraction allowed us to prove the presence of a single-crystal heart within nanoparticles and to define the crystalline structures. The properties ofnanocrystals as labels for imaging the micro-vascularization of the small animal brain in two photons were then analyzed by two photons fluorescence spectroscopy as weIl as the non-toxicity of nanoparticles. Abstract:
Digitization is a major issue of interest in the field of cultural heritage, allowing on the one hand the long-term safeguard of collector’s pieces, and on the other hand to valorize them under a new revelatory way. In collaboration with the Musée d’Ethnographie de Bordeaux (MEB), this thesis work has the objective of proposing an innovative solution in terms of digitization, by answering the following problem : how to faithfully reproduce the appearance of a collector’s piece, such that the digital version is, to the eye, indistinguishable from the real object ? The size of the objects to be digitized as well as the resolution necessary to obtain the desired quality imply an astronomical quantity of measurements to be carried out, forming a real technical and scientific challenge. This thesis proposes to respond to this observation by producing an innovative imagebased acquisition prototype, formed by a dome covered with 1080 LEDs within which a camera on a robotic arm evolves. This work is first supported by a bundle of preliminary research, focusing on the theoretical and practical issues attached to such a measurement. This notably made it possible to highlight to what extent diffraction plays an important role in BRDF measurements, far beyond the usual criteria. In this sense, a new metrologically viable data processing algorithm has been proposed. Supported by these achievements, the digitization prototype has been designed, produced, calibrated and finally successfully used for the safeguarding of the cultural heritage. This new, constantly evolving instrument then lays the foundation stone for many areas of future research, both focused on optimizing the measurement process and on exploiting the generated data

Voronova, Ekaterina. "Du symbolisme phonétique (les années 1960 - 1990) à l'iconicité linguistique." Thesis, Dijon, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015DIJOL018.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis collects a relevant number of researches made between years 1960-1990 in Europe and in America in the field of the phonetic symbolism consisting “of the attribution of the meaning in a phoneme or a distinctive feature” (Monneret, 2003: 98; our translation). The important stake is represented by the institution of the current situation of the phono-symbolic researches in Soviet Union. The comparativo-descriptive approach is accompanied with the application of the typology relative to the phonetic symbolism been born during period mentioned (the subjective symbolism versus the objective symbolism). The present scientific work raises the possible causes of the blockage of the researches before 1960 as well as those of the development of analyses during the period 1960-1990, by focusing on the theoretical problem and the praxis accumulated around the phono-symbolic manifestations. No more considered as a marginal phenomenon, the phonetic symbolism presented as the fact that rises in the concept of the linguistic iconicity handling relations motivated between the form and the contents the increasing interest of which will show itself in the eighties, can be analyzed by means of the concept of analogy today considered in the recent researches (Monneret, 2014) as the emergent cognitive phenomenon involving similarity

Abstract:
AbstractSensory-motor information is linguistically encoded by action verbs. Such verbs are not only used to express action concepts and events, but they are also pervasively exploited in the linguistic representation of abstract concepts and figurative meanings. In the light of several theoretical approaches (i.e., Embodied Theories, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Image Schema Theory), this paper analyzes the mechanisms that enable action verbs to acquire abstract meanings and that motivate the symmetries (or asymmetries) in the semantic variations of locally equivalent verbs (e.g., premere and spingere; Eng., to press and to push). The research is carried out within the IMAGACT framework and focuses on a set of four Italian action verbs encoding force (i.e., premere, spingere, tirare, and trascinare; Eng., to press, to push, to pull, and to drag). The results confirm that metaphorical extensions of action verbs are constrained by the image schemas involved in the core meaning of the verbs. Additionally, the paper shows that these image schemas are responsible for the asymmetries in the metaphorical variation of action verbs pertaining to the same semantic class (i.e., force).
